- 0:00Dani: You're gonna be so covered in fur, dude.
- 0:01I'm sorry.
- 0:02Kara: It's fine.
- 0:03Yeah, I think these jeans are too slippery for her, but that's okay.
- 0:06She's, she has one leg dangling and her head resting below my knee.
- 0:10We'll put her on our story for you guys.
- 0:12Weekly Lenny.
- 0:13Dani: Lenny on the pod.
- 0:14Kara: Lenny's always on the pod.
- 0:15Dani: Yeah, since we don't wanna put our faces on there, we'll put hers.
- 0:18Kara: Exactly.
- 0:19Dani: It's fine.
- 0:19She's fine with that.
- 0:20Kara: Mm-hmm.
- 0:21Dani: Maybe I'll start posting you on there, but treat you like a baby on social
- 0:25media and put an emoji over your face.
- 0:27Kara: Just cover my face.
- 0:28Dani: What emoji would you want?
- 0:30Kara: Ooh, I'll take anything, honestly.
- 0:32Dani: No, like what speaks to your spirit?
- 0:34Kara: For some reason, the first one that came up is an octopus.
- 0:37Dani: Okay.
- 0:38Kara: It, it's a good shape.
- 0:39It'll, it'll cover my face.
- 0:41Yeah.
- 0:41I don't know why octopus.
- 0:42What else?
- 0:43Dani: Thinking of Bay and her sea creatures maybe.
- 0:46Kara: Mm, that could be.
- 0:47Subliminal.
- 0:48Dani: Mine would be a star.
- 0:50Kara: Oh, that's pr-
- 0:50Dani: Like the star emoji.
- 0:52Kara: Just a big star.
- 0:52Yeah, that's great.
- 0:54Yeah, on… Well, what if it was just something extremely random?
- 0:57Um.
- 0:58Dani: Piano.
- 0:59Kara: Yeah.
- 1:00I wouldn't say I'm a musical person, but a piano is quite random.
- 1:03Dani: Yeah.
- 1:03I just feel like these parents that are posting their babies and
- 1:07toddlers insisting on putting emojis on their face, get more creative
- 1:11with the emoji you're gonna pick.
- 1:13Kara: Did we talk last week about the trend of hearing parents of deaf children
- 1:18posting their kids on social media?
- 1:19Dani: So we didn't, but we've spoken at length about it in our DMs to
- 1:24each other, and I just yesterday saw a video from a Deaf creator-
- 1:30Kara: Yes.
- 1:30Dani: Being like, "Hey, why the fuck are we doing this?"
- 1:33Kara: Yes.
- 1:33Yeah, what I've been seeing and what you have also been seeing on, like, your For
- 1:37You page or something, is these hearing parents of deaf children, primarily
- 1:42boys, who are reprimanding them, full faces and government names online.
- 1:47Dani: Yeah.
- 1:48Kara: Fully reprimanding them for whatever they're doing.
- 1:52Dani: That just feels extremely inappropriate to
- 1:54be posting on the internet.
- 1:55Kara: Yes, extremely inappropriate.
- 1:57I hate it, and I think it, the, the way she's talking to him is not appropriate.
- 2:04Dani: Also because she's simcomming.
- 2:07Kara: Yeah.
- 2:07Dani: Like, it's giving Switched at Birth in real life.
- 2:09Kara: Yeah.
- 2:10' Dani: Cause specifically that woman-
- 2:12Kara: It makes me wonder if he's not understanding everything she's
- 2:15saying because she is simcomming.
- 2:18Dani: Yeah.
- 2:18There feels like there's a communication breakdown for sure.
- 2:22Kara: And I also hate that I'm seeing this.
- 2:24Why-
- 2:24Dani: Yeah, this is private, and I feel like there's a lot of
- 2:27people in the comments, hearing people, being like, "You go, Mama."
- 2:31Kara: "You go, mama."
- 2:32Dani: "You're doing such a good job."
- 2:33Kara: Like- End the cycle.
- 2:34Dani: Yeah.
- 2:34Kara: Break the cycle.
- 2:35Dani: And, like, it… Yeah, it just sort of feels like- They're getting
- 2:40their flowers for, like, crumbs, and exploiting their children.
- 2:44Kara: For, like, raising their voice at their eight-year-old son.
- 2:47It's crazy.
- 2:48And then there's another creator whose name I don't remember.
- 2:51Dani: Yeah, we're not-
- 2:51Kara: But their son-
- 2:51Dani: -gonna use names in these 'cause I don't wanna get into
- 2:53beef on the internet either.
- 2:54Kara: No, neither do I. But it's another hearing mother of a deaf
- 2:57son, and this deaf son, I believe, also has an intellectual disability.
- 3:01Dani: Mm-hmm.
- 3:02Kara: So that's added on top of it, and she reprimands him on camera for
- 3:08not behaving appropriately in school.
- 3:09She doesn't say what, but he… This is, because he has an intellectual
- 3:14disability, she needs to repeat the same thing over and over, and then also
- 3:20reprimand him for his bad behavior, whatever that behavior was at school.
- 3:23But it's several videos in a row of her doing this, and being
- 3:28like, "Were you good today?"
- 3:28And then saying, like, "You don't get your PlayStation today 'cause the
- 3:32teacher told me you weren't behaving well." Why do I need to know that?
- 3:35Dani: There is something, like, sickening to me.
- 3:38Kara: I don't- It hurts my stomach.
- 3:39Dani: It, yeah, it gives me, like, a pit in my stomach.
- 3:42It is just so inappropriate to record and then share that with the internet.
- 3:47Kara: Yes.
- 3:48Dani: I just, like, don't understand as a parent, I mean, I'm not a parent, but,
- 3:51like, I can't understand why you as a parent would have any desire to do that.
- 3:57Kara: Right.
- 3:57Yeah, I agree.
- 3:58I wanna be a parent one day, and I don't ever plan on doing that.
- 4:02I was telling my wife this, I was like, "If we ever post a child,
- 4:05it's gonna be, like, a tasteful photo of, like, just the hand."
- 4:09Or, like, I'm pu-
- 4:10Dani: You're gonna do, like, the hand holding the finger birth announcement?
- 4:13Kara: Literally.
- 4:14Or, like, I'm pushing them on the swing and you only see the back of their head.
- 4:18Dani: Okay, influencer vibes.
- 4:19No, I love it.
- 4:21Kara: But obviously it's private and it's only for me and my family, but.
- 4:24Dani: Yeah.
- 4:25Kara: I hope you guys aren't posting your children online for content.
- 4:28Dani: It's mostly creeps on there, guys, and also just, like,
- 4:31embarrassing when they grow up.
- 4:33Kara: And AI is, like, stealing their faces.
- 4:34Dani: Oh my God, and AI is stealing their faces, and
- 4:37probably our voices, by the way.
- 4:39Kara: Yeah.
- 4:39Dani: I'm really worried about that.
- 4:41This is an, an in-audio moment to say we do not consent-
- 4:45Kara: No, we do not.
- 4:46Dani: For training AI or AI using our voices in any capacity, which I also put
- 4:51in the show notes of all the episodes, but who knows if that matters for shit.
- 4:55Kara: Can we talk about John Green?
- 4:56Dani: Oh, my God, that's what we have to talk about.
- 4:59Kara: Yeah.
- 4:59Dani: It's fine, guys.
- 5:00Some longer episodes.
- 5:02We were gone for so long.
- 5:03Kara: A whole week.
- 5:04Dani: N- no, before that.
- 5:05Kara: I know.
- 5:06Dani: Several months.
- 5:06Kara: I know.
- 5:07We saw John Green at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn literally
- 5:10after we recorded last week.
- 5:12Dani: Yeah.
- 5:12Kara: And I asked for interpreters.
- 5:14It was such a pain in the ass to get interpreters for this venue.
- 5:17It's a wonderful, beautiful, old venue that they recently restored,
- 5:22but they have three separate emails and none of them work, and one was,
- 5:26like, accessibility@kingstheatre.com or something.
- 5:28Did not work.
- 5:29'Cause I was like, "Okay, surely that's the one to ask for
- 5:32interpreters," and then they were like, "That email's dead." Great.
- 5:35Okay.
- 5:36And then there was, like, a box office one.
- 5:38That also didn't work, and I was like, "Okay. Well, this event's quickly
- 5:42coming up." So I had to contact ATG, which is I guess the company-
- 5:46Dani: The ticketing provider
- 5:47Kara: the ticketing provider, and then they had to reach out to Kings Theatre.
- 5:51Dani: Which I guess they might own the venue.
- 5:53I don't know.
- 5:53Kara: That's what I think.
- 5:54Dani: A lot of ticketing providers do own venues now.
- 5:56Kara: Right.
- 5:57So I was like-
- 5:57Dani: Monopoly.
- 5:58Evil.
- 5:59Kara: Right.
- 5:59So I was like, "Okay, sure, I'll contact the private equity firm that owns Kings
- 6:03Theatre," whatever, and that worked out.
- 6:05And then I'm sure they reached out to three other people in the chain of
- 6:09command, and then they got interpreters.
- 6:11Dani: Yeah, the private equity firm found you the most handsome
- 6:14interpreter in the world.
- 6:15Kara: Yeah.
- 6:16But they seated us in a weird location.
- 6:18It was, like, in front of the stairs.
- 6:21Dani: Yeah, it was like they moved us, like, three rows back from the front.
- 6:26Kara: Yes, but all the way-
- 6:28Dani: So there were still people… All the way to the left.
- 6:30Kara: Yeah.
- 6:30Dani: So there were still people in front of us kind of blocking
- 6:34your view of the interpreters.
- 6:36Kara: Yes.
- 6:36Dani: And those people's view was being blocked by the interpreters.
- 6:41Like, it made no sense where they put us.
- 6:43It, and so where we were seated, we thought, "Oh, perhaps there are other
- 6:47deaf or hard of hearing people here."
- 6:49Kara: No, just me.
- 6:50Dani: Because it was like, well, if we're in row two, certainly
- 6:52we would've been in row one.
- 6:54Kara: No.
- 6:55No.
- 6:55Dani: No.
- 6:56Kara: It was strange.
- 6:57And then the interpreters arrive.
- 6:59The sh- this event started late.
- 7:01I think King's Theatre had a lot of trouble getting people in on time.
- 7:04Dani: Yeah.
- 7:04Kara: There was a really long line.
- 7:05Dani: Guys, I've never seen that many white girls with my exact
- 7:10bangs and tote bags in Brooklyn.
- 7:12It looked threatening, frankly.
- 7:14Kara: The residents of Flatbush were terrified.
- 7:16Dani: Yeah.
- 7:17Kara: Anyway, the interpreters arrive, and usually what happens when you hire
- 7:20interpreters for an event is you're like, usually they're like, "Hmm, where's the
- 7:24deaf person that I got hired for to give access to?" And they kind of look around.
- 7:29But the two of them are talking to each other.
- 7:31One's a woman, and one's an extremely hot man, and they're
- 7:35just talking to each other.
- 7:37And I had to be like, "Hey. Hey, hey, guys. Hi."
- 7:41Dani: It was truly, we felt like we were intruding on their exchange.
- 7:45Kara: Yeah.
- 7:46Dani: They were having a heated exchange.
- 7:47Kara: Usually what I do is we introduce ourselves.
- 7:50We're like, "What's up? How's life?" And then also, we talk about where
- 7:55they're gonna stand and what's the be- what will be the best view for me.
- 7:58Dani: Yeah, usually they have a moment of, like, advocating for you, being
- 8:02like, "Can you see me when I'm standing here? Would you like me to move you
- 8:05somewhere else?" Like, they're very-
- 8:07Kara: None of that happened.
- 8:08Dani: Typically very good.
- 8:09Like, we kind of assumed they would come and say, "Hey, we noticed that
- 8:13you're in the second row, blocked by all these people in front of you."
- 8:17Kara: That's what I was hoping, they would move us.
- 8:19Dani: "Do you want me to ask people to switch with you or, like, move
- 8:23you to the empty seats at the very front and then stand over there?"
- 8:27Kara: Right, those seats never got filled.
- 8:29Dani: Mm-hmm, and none of that happened.
- 8:32Kara: No.
- 8:33Dani: And I cannot emphasize to you enough how handsome this man was.
- 8:36Kara: Yes.
- 8:37Dani: How, like, conventionally handsome he was in a way where we were like, "What
- 8:41is this guy doing here? There's no way."
- 8:44Kara: But I have really bad news in that his signing wasn't that great.
- 8:47Dani: I know.
- 8:48Yeah, like two-thirds of the way in, I texted you quietly 'cause I didn't… The
- 8:54thing about interpreters is you can't sign to talk shit in front of them, about them.
- 8:58So I texted you to be like, "Am I crazy, or does he suck at his job?"
- 9:05Kara: It feels, he looks like he was 23, and it was, it was his first gig.
- 9:09Dani: Yeah.
- 9:09Kara: He, he was quite young.
- 9:11Dani: Yeah.
- 9:11Kara: And the other interpreter, usually there's two interpreters
- 9:14for events, and they switch off, but the other one was great.
- 9:17Dani: Yeah, she was fantastic.
- 9:19Kara: And he was-
- 9:20Dani: And he was there.
- 9:21Kara: And he was there.
- 9:21Dani: And he was so handsome.
- 9:23Kara: And everyone in the theatre agreed.
- 9:25Dani: And everyone agreed he was pretty because after the show, he got swarmed.
- 9:30By girls being like, "I've always wanted to learn sign language. Can I get your
- 9:34information to ask you some questions?"
- 9:36Kara: "Can I get your Instagram?"
- 9:38Dani: Honestly, genius play.
- 9:40Kara: Yeah.
- 9:40Dani: I hope some good comes of it.
- 9:42Kara: Yeah, if he doesn't already have a girlfriend.
- 9:44Dani: Yeah.
- 9:45Oh, I meant for them.
- 9:46Maybe they do learn sign language.
- 9:47Kara: Oh, God, I hope so.
- 9:49Dani: Not from him, hopefully.
- 9:50Kara: No.
- 9:51Dani: Learn from Deaf people, and also just, like, people that are good, but.
- 9:54Kara: It was so funny.
- 9:56The second the lights go back up in the theater, five girls
- 10:00immediately run up- And they,
- 10:01Dani: phones out.
- 10:02Kara: Phones out.
- 10:03Dani: They were ready.
- 10:04Kara: In front of him, being like, "Can I get your Instagram?"
- 10:06Dani: So we didn't even say bye to him or anything.
- 10:08Usually there's, like, a, a debrief after with the interpreters, like,
- 10:12a thank you so much, chat it up.
- 10:14Kara: No, I was like, if I sit and wait for him, it's gonna take me all night,
- 10:18so I was like, I, I'm gonna leave.
- 10:19Dani: And I didn't wanna talk to him.
- 10:20I was too shy.
- 10:21He was too handsome.
- 10:22Kara: Sure.
- 10:23Yeah, I was like, whatever.
- 10:24Bye.
- 10:25I said goodbye to the woman.
- 10:26She, she was, like, on the phone.
- 10:28Dani: Yeah, she was on the phone.
- 10:29She was already… She was- She was- She had clocked out.
- 10:31Kara: She clocked out the second the lights went up, so I was like, all right.
- 10:34Well.
- 10:35Dani: Also, remember at the beginning of the show, they were like, "A light
- 10:37will come down," and then the lights went off and then this interpreter was
- 10:41just signing in the complete darkness for, like, the first two minutes.
- 10:45Kara: Pitch black.
- 10:45Dani: Pitch black.
- 10:46Kara: The light was only on John Green-
- 10:48Dani: It was so-
- 10:48… Kara: introducing himself.
- 10:49Dani: It was so funny.
- 10:51Luckily, the applause went on for so long that you really only missed him coming
- 10:55out and saying, "Hello, Brooklyn," and then it just was clapping for, like…
- 11:00But it was really funny.
- 11:01Kara: It was so strange because we were all the way the left, and John
- 11:05Green came in all the way the right.
- 11:07Dani: Yeah.
- 11:07Kara: The complete opposite side of the stage.
- 11:09And he was quite hard to hear.
- 11:11Dani: The sound system was not on its A game that evening.
- 11:14Kara: No.
- 11:15Dani: But it was a lovely event.
- 11:17I had a lot of fun.
- 11:18Kara: I had a good time.
- 11:19I enjoyed the event.
- 11:21I finished the book very quickly.
- 11:22I just finished it.
- 11:23Dani: I haven't opened it.
- 11:25Kara: Yeah.
- 11:25I enjoyed it.
- 11:26Dani: Okay.
- 11:26Should we get to the show?
- 11:27Kara: Let's get to the show.
- 11:42Season two, episode two, The Awakening Conscience, which
- 11:46aired January 14th, 2013.
- 11:49And you probably didn't see the painting.
- 11:51Dani: I did not see the painting, but I'm gonna guess that the title is
- 11:55because Bay is realizing that other people exist for the first time ever.
- 11:58Kara: And Daphne-
- 11:59Dani: And Daphne a little bit.
- 12:00The thing actually is I was r- I was getting really sick of Daphne's whole
- 12:04arc this episode, because I do feel like we already did this in season one.
- 12:08Kara: Me too.
- 12:08Dani: Like, she already had this awakening.
- 12:10I feel like every season they have to be like, "Okay, bring Daphne
- 12:13back to East Riverside. Let her remember that poor people exist
- 12:17and that she used to be poor."
- 12:18Kara: Agreed.
- 12:19The painting is actually very beautiful, if you guys go look it up.
- 12:22It's an 1853 oil painting by William Holman Hunt.
- 12:26I think it's at the Tate or the British Museum, one of the-
- 12:30one of the museums in London.
- 12:31But it's a man and a woman, and the woman is his mistress, and she
- 12:37is, like, getting up from sitting on his lap and you see this look
- 12:41in her eyes, like sh- an awakening conscience, I guess of, like, maybe
- 12:45it's like, "Oh, God, what have I done?"
- 12:47Or, "What, what have I, what am I doing?" So the episode starts off in the Kennish
- 12:51kitchen, as it usually does, and Bay and Daphne are pitching the Car- Carlton
- 12:56pilot program to John and Kathryn.
- 12:58Dani: Yeah.
- 12:59Kara: And John, in front of Daphne, is like, "I don't
- 13:03know, that school kinda sucks."
- 13:05Dani: He says, "I want you to get a good education."
- 13:07Also, the only sign he does in this is education.
- 13:10Kara: And Daphne's like, "Okay, we may not have a pool, but we all, we have
- 13:14all the same classes that Buckner does."
- 13:16Dani: Also, they don't have a pool 'cause they haven't had the Kennishes
- 13:19to fucking fundraise for them.
- 13:20Maybe they'll have a pool if they get involved.
- 13:23And they won't.
- 13:23But yeah.
- 13:25Kara: No, and they won't.
- 13:27Dani: But the thing is, it, it just made me so mad no one in that
- 13:31exchange was like, "You are not in, a good enough signer, Bay,
- 13:35to go to a fucking Deaf school."
- 13:37Kara: No.
- 13:37In this scene, she's like, "I love signing, and I'm good at it."
- 13:42Dani: And then Daphne says nothing.
- 13:44Daphne's being mean, honestly, getting her-
- 13:46she's, like, setting her up to fail.
- 13:48Kara: I agree.
- 13:49Dani: You have to say something.
- 13:50Kara: I know.
- 13:51Bay's like, "I am good at, good at," and she was like, "This is gonna be a breeze."
- 13:55Dani: Yeah.
- 13:55And later on in the episode, she says to Emmett, like, "Why didn't
- 13:57you tell me I'm such a bad signer?" And he's like, "No, you're good.
- 14:00I understand you."
- 14:02And it's like, no, you need to talk to someone that's not
- 14:04your ex-boyfriend, soon-to-be-
- 14:06Kara: No.
- 14:06Dani: Boyfriend.
- 14:07Kara: She needs Natalie to humble her.
- 14:08She-
- 14:08Dani: Well, she will.
- 14:09She needs Natalie.
- 14:10We all needed Natalie.
- 14:11I'm so glad Natalie's here.
- 14:13Kara: We do, yeah.
- 14:14Bay and Daphne leave, and John and Kathryn are like, "Should we do this?"
- 14:17But Kathryn's like, "I don't know. She's excited about school
- 14:20for once, so that's promising."
- 14:21Dani: Yeah.
- 14:22And then by the way, guys, this decision happens offscreen.
- 14:25We don't actually get a scene of them saying fine.
- 14:28Kara: No, 'cause she starts at Carlton this episode.
- 14:31Dani: We just see her, yeah, we just see her later on, and she's like,
- 14:33"Can you believe my parents said yes?"
- 14:34And that's it, so.
- 14:36Kara: Well, I'm glad they sped the storyline along.
- 14:38Dani: Yeah, true.
- 14:39Kara: Regina and Angelo are in Angelo's apartment, and they are house
- 14:43planning, and she is talking about an environmentally friendly pool.
- 14:47Dani: This was frying me, because I wonder if they had more planned between
- 14:52episode one and episode two, and this was meant to be episode three, because
- 14:57Regina jumps into being so exuberant about the Angelo moving in situation-
- 15:03Kara: Yes.
- 15:03Dani: So fast.
- 15:04Like, in the last episode, she says to Toby offhand, like, "I guess
- 15:07there's nothing stopping me from moving in with him," but she's,
- 15:10like, sort of says it begrudgingly.
- 15:12Kara: Yeah.
- 15:12Dani: And then we see her be like, "Oh my God, okay, so I was pulling
- 15:16design samples and I think we should do this environmentally friendly
- 15:20pool that has a bunch of plants in it, and it filters the water."
- 15:24The second thing I would like to say is that I have family friends
- 15:27that have a pool like this.
- 15:28It is thrice the cost of a regular pool.
- 15:32Kara: I was gonna say, he only has five million.
- 15:34Dani: It is so expensive to do.
- 15:36It's very cool, but one, they have access to a pool on the Kennish property.
- 15:42Kara: That's true.
- 15:43Dani: And Regina's only cannonballed in it in slow-mo that one single time.
- 15:47So I don't know why she would need an environmentally friendly pool on the house
- 15:53that they're building on the golf course.
- 15:55If you wanna be environmentally friendly, maybe we start by not
- 15:59building a house on a golf course.
- 16:01Kara: Maybe not having a golf course.
- 16:03Dani: Or that.
- 16:03What's confusing is we haven't seen them be, like, back together.
- 16:06Kara: No, and-
- 16:07Dani: Like, they're not kissing, they're not sleeping together as far as we know.
- 16:10Kara: No.
- 16:11And it's gonna get confusing because Angelo decides this
- 16:14is the time to be like-
- 16:16Dani: Hey…
- 16:16Kara: "Sorry about the pool.
- 16:17Let me interrupt for a second.
- 16:18I'm gonna be a daddy again.
- 16:20I got a girl pregnant." And Regina immediately flips out.
- 16:23And part of me is like, sure, reasonable that you're mad.
- 16:27But also interesting because you have not seemed interested at all in having
- 16:32a relationship with him for some time.
- 16:34Dani: Yes.
- 16:35I was very confused about this.
- 16:37Are they together or not?
- 16:38I know they're legally together, but.
- 16:41Kara: They don't live together.
- 16:42Dani: This reaction, I understand there's like 20 years of history fueling it, but
- 16:45I feel like this reaction, she, like, shames him so hard in a way where I'm
- 16:50like, I don't know, are we not all adults?
- 16:53Like, her being like, "You just couldn't keep it in your pants," I
- 16:55don't know, you guys weren't together.
- 16:57Kara: Nor were you married.
- 16:58Dani: He's an adult man having sex.
- 17:00Also, when he got deported or ran away so that he wouldn't get deported, I can't, I
- 17:05kinda can't remember what happened there.
- 17:07Kara: He ran away.
- 17:07Dani: He ran away.
- 17:08He thought he wasn't gonna be able to come back.
- 17:11Kara: Right.
- 17:11And he didn't know about this baby until after the court case.
- 17:15Dani: Yeah.
- 17:15Just because he had a one-night stand one time doesn't mean that six
- 17:19months later he can't say, "Yes, we will get married for my green card."
- 17:23Kara: Right.
- 17:24Dani: I don't know.
- 17:25And then also, again, it's a drama and it's for the plot, but it just feels
- 17:29quite immature to be like, we are adult parents to, like… I mean, Regina and
- 17:34Angelo are both barely parents anymore.
- 17:37Kara: Literally.
- 17:37Dani: Um, we don't see her interact with Daphne this entire episode.
- 17:41But we are both, like, in this weird parenting situation already.
- 17:46Would it not just be like, okay, it sounds like you're gonna be
- 17:49co-parenting a baby, you know?
- 17:52Like, it's not like he says, "I'm getting back together with this woman."
- 17:55Kara: With Lana?
- 17:56Dani: Yeah.
- 17:56Kara: No, he doesn't.
- 17:57Dani: He just says, yeah, I'm… Like, it's obviously unfortunate.
- 18:00I don't know.
- 18:01Regina, don't make me defend a man, but-
- 18:03Kara: I know.
- 18:03Dani: I feel like her crash-out doesn't make sense.
- 18:06Kara: It's strange.
- 18:07It's confusing.
- 18:09Dani: Yeah.
- 18:09I feel like we needed m- we need more… I just wanna know, maybe she's
- 18:13just, like, stupid enough to be like, "Everything is fine and we're married
- 18:17for real now, and I love him so much."
- 18:18But we haven't seen that.
- 18:19Kara: We have not seen that.
- 18:22Yeah, weird.
- 18:23Dani: I don't know.
- 18:24Kara: Either way, he just always has bad timing.
- 18:26Dani: Yeah, he does have bad timing, and he does kind of suck.
- 18:30I just am like, you knew that about him already.
- 18:32This doesn't feel that outside the realm of par for the course for him.
- 18:37Kara: Yeah, maybe she's just like, "Again?"
- 18:39Dani: Again?
- 18:39Yeah.
- 18:40And it is an again situation.
- 18:42Kara: It is.
- 18:43She runs off in anger, and that's the end of that scene.
- 18:45Dani: Yeah.
- 18:46Kara: Bay in the driveway is painting her car red.
- 18:49It looks so much better.
- 18:50Dani: I agree.
- 18:51Kara: Yeah, sorry to the sea creatures, but good, 'cause she's
- 18:54erasing Zarra from her life.
- 18:56Dani: Yeah, so true.
- 18:57New chapter.
- 18:58Kara: Yeah, and new school, new chapter.
- 19:00Dani: Mm-hmm.
- 19:00Kara: The car is red.
- 19:01It looks so much better.
- 19:02John and Kathryn have im- have approved the Carlton entrance?
- 19:07Attendance.
- 19:08Kathryn comes in, and she's like, "Are you ready for school?
- 19:11Also, just wanna make sure this is not just about Emmett." And Bay's
- 19:15like, "No, I made this decision without Emmett in mind, I promise."
- 19:18Dani: Me when I lie.
- 19:19Kara: Literally.
- 19:20"Also, come in for a family meeting, please," says Kathryn.
- 19:23And then everyone's there, so it's Toby and Bay and Daphne and John and Kathryn.
- 19:29Everyone's in one of the many rooms, and Daphne brings out
- 19:32tacos that she is test cooking.
- 19:35Dani: Yeah.
- 19:36Kara: That she is test cooking for her taco truck, and then this is another
- 19:41example, again, where I was like, Puerto Rican people do not exist in this show.
- 19:46Because when they say she's Puerto Rican, they just mean Mexican.
- 19:50Tacos are not Puerto Rican.
- 19:51Dani: Yeah, I don't… In, in, uh, Kansas City, I guess they are.
- 19:56Kara: It drives me crazy.
- 19:57Every Latino reference-
- 19:59Dani: Yeah.
- 19:59Kara: In this show is always Mexican.
- 20:01Dani: Yeah.
- 20:01Kara: Frida Kahlo?
- 20:02Mexican.
- 20:03Dani: The Mexican hot chocolate.
- 20:04Kara: Mexican hot chocolate, and now tacos.
- 20:07Dani: Do we think Daphne's food is good?
- 20:09Kara: I think it's decent.
- 20:10I think it's good for a 16-year-old.
- 20:12Dani: Okay.
- 20:12Kara: That's my answer.
- 20:13Dani: Canonically, to me, I'm like, I bet it's bad.
- 20:17Kara: I don't know.
- 20:17People line up in East Riverside for those tacos.
- 20:19Dani: 'Cause she's giving them away for free.
- 20:21Kara: That's true.
- 20:22That is true.
- 20:22We'll get to it.
- 20:24Anyway, John and Kathryn are like, "Family meeting, we have an
- 20:27announcement, and that is John is gonna run for state senate." Daphne's
- 20:31like, "Oh my God, that is so cool.
- 20:32Congrats." And Toby and Bay are like, "Okay."
- 20:35Dani: Yeah.
- 20:36No one really cares that much.
- 20:38And then Daphne's like, "Okay, I'm gonna go take my food truck
- 20:40out," and she doesn't have any permits, hasn't done any research.
- 20:44John is like, "Let me call my guy at the permit office first."
- 20:48Kara: Yeah.
- 20:48She says "I wanna go to a metal concert at 11:00 PM alone-
- 20:53Dani: Dude.
- 20:54Kara: Where all these drunk and high men are going to come buy my tacos,
- 20:59and I wanna do this alone at night."
- 21:01Dani: Yeah.
- 21:01I think what's so frustrating that the show does, as an adult looking back,
- 21:06there's, they, they make so many Daphne plot lines, her, like, struggling
- 21:10for independence against people's expectations of her, they make it from
- 21:14the point of view of, like, "Just because I'm Deaf doesn't mean I can't do it."
- 21:17And it's like, no, honey, it's 'cause you're 17.
- 21:20Kara: 'Cause you're a 17-year-old girl, and that's dangerous.
- 21:22Dani: And also 'cause you didn't get the fucking permit.
- 21:25Kara: Yeah.
- 21:25Dani: Like, her being like, "I don't need the permit, it's fine," yes you do.
- 21:29Kara: Yeah.
- 21:29Dani: Your dad's about to be a senator.
- 21:31You can't have a scandal.
- 21:33Kara: No.
- 21:33Dani: And she will.
- 21:34Kara: And she will.
- 21:35And she will.
- 21:36Yeah, so John is like, "I wanna help you with this," and Bay's like,
- 21:39"I wanna help you with the logo."
- 21:40Dani: And Daphne's like, "I don't want anybody's help."
- 21:42Kara: You need it.
- 21:43Toby needs to go rehearse.
- 21:45Dani: Okay, am I crazy?
- 21:47I thought Nikki still had a boyfriend at the end of the last season.
- 21:51Kara: Oh, that's right.
- 21:51Uh, Jed?
- 21:52Dani: That's, yes.
- 21:53That's why I'm saying, like, she was not in the last episode at all.
- 21:57I think there was supposed to be an episode between this
- 21:59episode and the last episode.
- 22:01Kara: Wow.
- 22:02Dani: Because we didn't see their breakup.
- 22:05They were building it up like this was gonna be a long running
- 22:09thing where she's dating Jed, but she has feelings for Toby and she
- 22:13eventually has to break up with Jed.
- 22:14Nope, they're just making out, next scene.
- 22:16It happened off screen, I guess, but, like, they just abandoned so
- 22:19many plot lines from the last season.
- 22:21Kara: That's a great point.
- 22:22Completely forgot about the ex-boyfriend.
- 22:24Dani: Mm-hmm.
- 22:24Kara: Wow.
- 22:25Dani: But anyway, they're getting hot and heavy, but
- 22:28Nikki took a pledge of chastity.
- 22:30Kara: Yes.
- 22:31Dani: Which is crazy.
- 22:31Did she say that at the l- la- end of last season?
- 22:35Kara: I think it's implied, 'cause she's a good Christian girl.
- 22:38Dani: Right, but they talk about the pledge like it was
- 22:40a thing she signed recently.
- 22:42Like, it was a thing that we saw happen.
- 22:44Kara: Again, maybe there's an episode.
- 22:46Dani: They're making out and she pulls back and Toby's
- 22:48like, "This gosh darn pledge.
- 22:51I just wish we could have sex." And she's like, "I know, but I just signed that
- 22:55pledge." Like, what are we talking about?
- 22:58When did that happen?
- 22:59And Toby's like, he's not, like, pressuring her, but he's doing
- 23:03the, he's doing, like, the logical version of teenage boy-ism where
- 23:07he's like, "I just think that when two people really care about each
- 23:10other and we've both had sex before, it shouldn't be that big of a deal."
- 23:14Kara: Right.
- 23:14Dani: And she's like, "But I have the pledge." The pledge of chastity is crazy.
- 23:19Kara: It's so ABC Family, though.
- 23:20Dani: It is.
- 23:21Kara: But Kathryn comes in to interrupt their quote, unquote,
- 23:25"rehearsal." I wonder if she didn't hear any music playing and she was
- 23:28like, "Maybe I'll just come in."
- 23:29Dani: Oh, she's for sure there to make sure they're not having sex.
- 23:32Kara: No new babies are being made.
- 23:33But she's like, "Hi guys, I have biscotti."
- 23:35Dani: Yeah.
- 23:36Like-
- 23:36Kara: Please try it.
- 23:37And then she, like, kicks Toby out to go make some tea, but it's
- 23:40cute actually because she and Nikki are really getting along.
- 23:42Dani: Yeah.
- 23:42Kara: They're chatting.
- 23:43Dani: They totally are.
- 23:44Nikki's like parent catnip.
- 23:46Kathryn loves her pledge of chastity.
- 23:48But then Toby comes back in and they're-
- 23:50Kara: Like, singing.
- 23:51Dani: Singing together, and I, Lea Thompson has a beautiful voice.
- 23:54But I do not wish to hear it anymore.
- 23:57I hate the singing plot lines in this show.
- 23:59Kara: Mm.
- 24:00Dani: I know it was just a trend back then, that they had to make
- 24:02everyone sing all the time to compete with Glee, but why is she
- 24:07singing for so long in this episode?
- 24:10Like, why are we getting on-screen Kathryn singing, but
- 24:13not on-screen chastity pledge?
- 24:15Kara: Wish I could tell you.
- 24:16Dani: My priorities are different-
- 24:18Kara: Yeah…
- 24:18Dani: than the writers, I guess.
- 24:19Kara: And they love the singing, 'cause Nikki's like, "Do you wanna join
- 24:24Dani: our band?"
- 24:25Kara: Or, like, "be in the album-"
- 24:27Dani: Yeah.
- 24:27Kara: "For one song?" And Kathryn's like, "Yeah, totally."
- 24:30And Toby's like, "Kill me."
- 24:31Dani: Yeah.
- 24:31Kara: "Kill me now." We're back in-
- 24:33Dani: I'm on Toby's side.
- 24:34I wouldn't like that either.
- 24:35Kara: Especially if you're like a horny teenage boy, and now your mom
- 24:38is in your band with your girlfriend.
- 24:40Dani: It's like it's secular music, but barely.
- 24:42Kara: I know.
- 24:43Dani: And then your mom's there.
- 24:44Kara: It's tough.
- 24:45Dani: Anyway, Bay is at school.
- 24:47Kara: First day.
- 24:47Dani: Her first day at Carlton, and she has decided now is the
- 24:50time to try out a side part.
- 24:51She said, "I'm gonna part it way to the side." It's crazy.
- 24:55Kara: Good for her, I guess.
- 24:56Dani: She otherwise looks good, except that she is layered head to toe.
- 24:59She's wearing a dress over a long sleeve and jeans.
- 25:03Kara: She did say she's not used to dressing up for school.
- 25:05Dani: And then a short sleeve shrug over that.
- 25:08Kara: Yes.
- 25:08Dani: So she has three layers on top, two layers on bottom.
- 25:12Kara: They're blasting the AC at Carlton.
- 25:14Dani: I'm just begging to know what season we're in at all times.
- 25:18Kara: This aired in January, but that doesn't mean anything.
- 25:20Dani: That mean, that means nothing.
- 25:21And they filmed it in Los Angeles, so it also means nothing.
- 25:24Kara: That is true.
- 25:25But she goes up to see Emmett in the hallway.
- 25:27He's delighted to see her.
- 25:28She's got a new student ID.
- 25:30She's like, "I hate how I look, though." And he throws it in the trash and goes,
- 25:33"Go to the office and get a new one, and lie that you lost your other one."
- 25:37Dani: Bay is not gonna make friends this way.
- 25:39Kara: Also-
- 25:40. Dani: With the administration.
- 25:40Kara: They would just make you a new one with your old picture on it, but okay.
- 25:43Dani: So true.
- 25:44Kara: The picture's in, in the database, but fine.
- 25:47It's fine.
- 25:47Bay, and I'm gonna complain about this for the rest of the episode,
- 25:50is simcomming in this Deaf school.
- 25:53Dani: Yeah.
- 25:54Kara: That she has the fortune, the privilege to attend.
- 25:57Dani: Like, turn your voice off, girl.
- 25:59Kara: Shut up.
- 26:00Dani: Also, what a blessing to fucking shut up sometimes.
- 26:04Kara: Yes.
- 26:04Dani: I love not talk- I love being able to continue talking.
- 26:08Kara: And sh-
- 26:08Dani: Without fucking having to vocalize.
- 26:10Kara: And she is barely signing.
- 26:12She'll sign every three words.
- 26:15Dani: Because she's out of practice, 'cause she hasn't
- 26:17been dating Emmett for so long.
- 26:18Kara: No.
- 26:19Dani: Like, this is such a stupid… I know they were just done with Buckner.
- 26:22I know it's for the plot.
- 26:24Kara: And I get why she is.
- 26:25Dani: This is so stupid of her.
- 26:26Kara: But honestly, it's gonna be good for her, the adversity that she's gonna
- 26:30experience, I think will be good for her.
- 26:32I think it's humbling.
- 26:33I'm serious.
- 26:34Dani: Yeah.
- 26:35I know.
- 26:35It's just, like, at the expense of these-
- 26:38Kara: The Deaf people there, yes.
- 26:40Dani: Deaf people's education.
- 26:41Kara: Yeah, that's also true.
- 26:43She meets up with Teo, who we met in the last episode.
- 26:45He was the one who was lost, and, uh, Daphne helped him go find the office.
- 26:49Dani: Yeah, he is hearing, and he seems to have a genuine hatred
- 26:54for Deaf people and Deaf culture.
- 26:56Like, it's crazy.
- 26:57Kara: Yeah.
- 26:57It's, throughout the whole episode, he's like, "Ugh, this signing thing."
- 27:01Dani: I know.
- 27:01Kara: "I gotta do it again?"
- 27:02Dani: Yeah.
- 27:03Kara: "Oh, brother." So to my knowledge, the pilot program is for family
- 27:08members, hearing family members, right?
- 27:11So does he have, like, a Deaf brother or something?
- 27:13Dani: I don't wanna spoil it for you.
- 27:15You'll find out.
- 27:16Kara: Okay.
- 27:16But yeah, he's like, "You ready to go to Basic ASL? Kill me."
- 27:20Dani: I think what's frustrating to me about this is that Bay should
- 27:24know better than to ally with him.
- 27:26Kara: Mm.
- 27:27Dani: Like, she's not in the same boat as him.
- 27:29Kara: No.
- 27:29Dani: She knows-
- 27:30Kara: She knows a lot more than he does.
- 27:31Dani: She knows a lot more than he does.
- 27:33She has an appreciation and a respect, in theory-
- 27:36Kara: She should.
- 27:37Dani: For it.
- 27:37She should.
- 27:38We thought that she did, but I feel like she meets this guy and is just like,
- 27:42"Sure, I have no problems, and I will not call you out for you sucking." Like, later
- 27:47on, they're walking, and she's trying to sign, and he's like, "Can we just talk?"
- 27:51And she's like, "Signing is talking." But then she's like, "Fine, we can just talk."
- 27:56And I'm like, you're-
- 27:57Kara: You're still on the campus.
- 27:58Dani: You're part of the problem.
- 27:59You're part of the problem.
- 28:00Kara: And you're still in the school.
- 28:01Dani: I feel like if he hadn't found a friend, then he'd be
- 28:04like, "Okay, I have to lock in."
- 28:06Kara: Right.
- 28:07Dani: But instead, he just clings to Bay and is like, "This sucks."
- 28:10Kara: Yeah, it drives me crazy the whole episode.
- 28:12Dani: Yeah.
- 28:12And then meanwhile, Kathryn and Regina are in the kitchen, and Regina's
- 28:16filling her in on the Angelo situation, and the only really thing of note
- 28:20there is that Kathryn's like, "Is he a sex addict?" People have sex.
- 28:25You used to have sex with your husband all the time.
- 28:27This show used to heavily imply that you had a healthy sex life.
- 28:30Kara: Yeah, but now she's too busy fundraising for his campaign, I guess.
- 28:33Dani: She was like, first that nurse that he was dating, and then this.
- 28:38It's like, that's what, two women in the last year?
- 28:40That's not that dramatic.
- 28:42Kara: I mean, she has a low body count.
- 28:43Dani: Yeah.
- 28:44Kara: I wonder if John was her first.
- 28:46I feel like she, 'cause I feel like she's, she's Catholic.
- 28:49Dani: Yeah, but that doesn't mean anything.
- 28:51Those people-
- 28:51Kara: I don't know.
- 28:51To me, it does.
- 28:52Dani: Those people are doing crazy things.
- 28:54Kara: I wonder if she's, like, more Christian than we think, and is, like,
- 28:58maybe saved for marriage or something.
- 29:00Dani: I mean, I guess.
- 29:01She married John, like, right out of college, right?
- 29:03Kara: She did, yeah.
- 29:04Dani: So maybe she's only ever been with him.
- 29:06I just think it's weird that people can't be like, "Damn, that's crazy that
- 29:10he wasn't responsible." But also, he could have been, accidents still happen.
- 29:14Kara: Sure, but-
- 29:15Dani: He could have used protection, and this still could have happened.
- 29:17I don't know.
- 29:17Just her being like, "Is he a sex addict?" Crazy.
- 29:20Kara: Yeah, that's true.
- 29:21I agree.
- 29:21Dani: And w- what, I can't even remember what Regina says in response,
- 29:24but she doesn't, like, dispute it.
- 29:26Kara: No, neither do I. I don't remember what she says, but I think
- 29:29she was like, "Well, it happened, and that sucks." And that's kind of the
- 29:32consensus they come to, like, well.
- 29:34Dani: Then we get this beautiful scene.
- 29:35Kara: Oh, we're back at Carlton?
- 29:36Dani: We're back at Carlton.
- 29:38Kara: This is an English class, and they are discussing The Scarlet Letter.
- 29:42Dani: Yeah.
- 29:43Kara: Great book.
- 29:44Did you ever read it?
- 29:45Dani: No.
- 29:45Kara: Okay.
- 29:46Right, you didn't go to school.
- 29:47Dani: No, but I've seen the film Easy A.
- 29:49Kara: And that's close enough.
- 29:50Dani: It is.
- 29:51It's an adaptation.
- 29:52Kara: Yes.
- 29:53And Bay and Teo are watching this teacher sign, and they do not
- 29:58understand a word she is saying.
- 30:00Dani: And they took away captions for a lot of it.
- 30:02Kara: They took away captions to confuse the hearing audience.
- 30:04Dani: I love when this show does that.
- 30:05Kara: I do love that.
- 30:06Dani: 'Cause it works on me every time.
- 30:07I'm like, huh?
- 30:08Kara: And also, they cut away from the teacher so fast.
- 30:11Like, when she's do- sign, midway through a sign that you
- 30:15also miss what she is signing.
- 30:17But basically, what, I rewound and watched it again a few times-
- 30:21Dani: Thank you, for your service.
- 30:22Kara: Just to try to get what she was saying.
- 30:24But she's talking about The Scarlet Letter, and she was
- 30:26basically asking how do our current morals contradict this book.
- 30:31Dani: Mm-hmm.
- 30:32Kara: And Bay is like, "I'm sorry, can you say that again?"
- 30:34And the teacher says it slowly, even so I can catch it.
- 30:38And then she's like, "Thanks, I'm gonna ponder that."
- 30:40Dani: And then class ends.
- 30:43Kara: And the teacher signs, which I also got, was, "Since we didn't
- 30:47finish, I want you to go ahead and read the last three parts," maybe
- 30:50chapters, and everyone groans.
- 30:53It's lunchtime.
- 30:53Daphne's like, "I have to go ahead and run this food truck errand." And
- 30:56then this girl comes up, we don't know her name, but her name is Natalie.
- 31:00Dani: I think we met her last episode-
- 31:02Kara: Yes.
- 31:02Dani: randomly.
- 31:03Kara: But I don't think we ever get her, we didn't get her name yet.
- 31:05Dani: No, we haven't gotten her name yet.
- 31:06Kara: But throughout the whole class, she looks annoyed.
- 31:09Dani: Yeah.
- 31:10Kara: She looks pissed.
- 31:10Dani: She has a really good resting bitch face.
- 31:12Kara: She does.
- 31:12Uh, Stephanie Nogueras.
- 31:14Dani: Shout out.
- 31:15Kara: Yeah.
- 31:16A Deaf actor, very cool.
- 31:18Gorgeous.
- 31:19Dani: Yeah, she's really pretty.
- 31:20Kara: Mm-hmm.
- 31:20Dani: So she brushes past Bay and shoulder checks her a bit.
- 31:25Kara: She does.
- 31:26Dani: And this is, is this actually, like, a slur?
- 31:30Kara: It's not a slur.
- 31:30Dani: They treat it as so dramatic, so I don't wanna, like,
- 31:32just say it wild on the pod.
- 31:34Kara: She signs Y-A on her forehead.
- 31:37Dani: Yeah.
- 31:38Kara: And Bay doesn't know what that means, but Daphne sees it, and is like-
- 31:42Dani: "oh."
- 31:43Kara: "She's just annoyed 'cause, um, we have extra homework now."
- 31:47Dani: Yeah, yeah, Daphne doesn't tell Bay.
- 31:50Kara: Daphne doesn't tell Bay what it means, and Bay later is gonna ask
- 31:52Emmett, "What does this sign mean?"
- 31:54Dani: And Emmett is so dumb, 'cause it's, like, obviously Bay is asking
- 31:57'cause someone called her that.
- 31:58Emmett, like, tells her.
- 32:00Kara: "Oh, that sign, it means stupid, pea-brained, dumb." And
- 32:04Bay's like, "Okay, got it, got it.
- 32:06Thanks."
- 32:06Dani: Yeah.
- 32:07A ya-ya.
- 32:08Like, I had never heard it.
- 32:09It's ya-ya.
- 32:10Kara: Natalie did it so fast in the-
- 32:13Yeah, it's just Y-A on the forehead.
- 32:16Dani: I do like it, unfortunately.
- 32:19Kara: Yeah.
- 32:20Dani: It's like… 'Cause it's kinda like loser.
- 32:22Like, it's very, like-
- 32:22Kara: It's a little bit like-
- 32:23Dani: 2000s.
- 32:23Kara: It is.
- 32:24I thought she was doing stubborn at first, 'cause stubborn is, like,
- 32:27the B hand shape next to the head.
- 32:29Dani: Mm-hmm.
- 32:29Kara: And the way the camera was angled, this is also the show's
- 32:32fault, but the way the camera was angled, it was hard to see the sign.
- 32:35Dani: Mm-hmm.
- 32:35Kara: And we just saw the captions.
- 32:37Dani: Yeah.
- 32:38Kara: So that was confusing.
- 32:39So I was like, "Is she signing stubborn? But that doesn't make
- 32:41sense." It's a, it's Deaf slang.
- 32:44Dani: So then, yeah, I wonder… I'm gonna Google it.
- 32:47In Greek, it means grandmother.
- 32:48Kara: It does.
- 32:49Dani: Wow.
- 32:50The AI overview says nothing about ASL.
- 32:52Kara: It's hard to find stupid Deaf slang.
- 32:55No, that seems like a bad thing to- Anyway.
- 32:59It's complex language, guys.
- 33:00Dani: So true.
- 33:01Kara: Yeah.
- 33:01So it's the next scene.
- 33:02She joins Emmett at lunch, and she continues simcomming.
- 33:05Dani: Yeah.
- 33:06Kara: And then, Emmett leaves.
- 33:08Emmett leaves to go get something, and then Bay's like, "Oh, no, no,
- 33:11no, no, please don't leave." And then she's stuck at this table with
- 33:13other Deaf people, including Natalie.
- 33:15Dani: Yeah, and she is… I wanted to kill her this whole scene.
- 33:19Kara: A was watching this with me and was like, "Shut up.
- 33:23Shut up.
- 33:24Why are you simcomming?
- 33:25Shut up."
- 33:25Dani: So much of this show I thought I would be hating Bay, like I did when
- 33:29I first watched it, and I haven't.
- 33:31I've been hating Daphne, and I think that's personal
- 33:33growth in me and Bay, I guess.
- 33:35Kara: Except for this scene.
- 33:36Dani: But she, oh my God, will not shut the fuck up.
- 33:39She is taking up so much space in this conversation.
- 33:43You could just be quiet.
- 33:44You could say nothing.
- 33:45Just observe.
- 33:46Kara: She, she thinks, "Hmm, I'm at a table with Deaf people. Maybe
- 33:50all Deaf people talk about is signing." No, that's not what we do.
- 33:54Dani: She's like… She turns to Natalie, and she's like, "Is that chocolate milk?
- 33:58I love chocolate milk.
- 34:00And I love the sign for milk.
- 34:02It's so instinctive." Mind you, Natalie's saying nothing.
- 34:06Kara: Natalie's just staring at her.
- 34:07Dani: Just staring.
- 34:08Bay will not stop.
- 34:09I lo- the sign for milk, and there's some signs that are just, like, so instinctive.
- 34:14I can't remember the other examples she gave.
- 34:16Kara: Yeah.
- 34:16But then there are signs, like, for, for bathroom, which I'm like, "What
- 34:19kind of crazy person thought that up?"
- 34:23Dani: Toilet.
- 34:24Don't be stupid.
- 34:26Like, her examples for signs where she was like, "Can you
- 34:28believe someone thought of that?
- 34:29Were they drunk?" I'm like, "No, those all also make sense."
- 34:32Kara: Yeah, and Natalie, still no response.
- 34:35Dani: Still, still no response.
- 34:36Kara: And then she's saying, "I have to go to yearbook. Goodbye."
- 34:39Dani: Yeah.
- 34:39And then Emmett's supposed to go, but he skips yearbook to stay back with Bay.
- 34:44Kara: Right.
- 34:45She's obviously stressed, and then this is when she asks.
- 34:48Dani: Yes, when she asks, "What does ya ya mean?"
- 34:50Kara: And then he's like, "It's stupid." And then she's like, "Okay, got it."
- 34:53Dani: It means you're a stupid dumb [BLEEP], actually.
- 34:55Kara: Right.
- 34:55Right.
- 34:56Dani: And then he goes, "Why? Why do you ask?"
- 34:57Kara: She went, "Nothing."
- 34:58Dani: Let's put some puzzle pieces together, Emmett.
- 35:00Do some critical thinking.
- 35:02Kara: No, he's just happy she's there.
- 35:03Dani: He's so happy.
- 35:04Kara: He's delighted the whole episode.
- 35:06Dani: Yeah.
- 35:06And they are, like, touchy and stuff again.
- 35:09Kara: Yeah.
- 35:10Dani: It's not… I'm gonna be so annoyed.
- 35:11I think it's, I think they make it official in the plot, but I'm
- 35:14gonna be annoyed if in the next episode they're just, like, back
- 35:16together and it happened off-screen.
- 35:18I feel like that's happening a lot.
- 35:19Kara: It needs to be a conversation.
- 35:21You have to tell me.
- 35:22While this lunch is happening, Daphne is back in East Riverside
- 35:26and she's getting 500 tortillas.
- 35:28Dani: Oh, yeah.
- 35:29Kara: From a nice lady in town, and this guy Javy approaches,
- 35:33who's played by Erick Lopez, who I recognize from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
- 35:36Hi.
- 35:37Dani: Shut up.
- 35:38Kara: And he's like, "Oh, someone's making white girl tacos."
- 35:42And then he's speaking Spanish to the restaurant owner, and she's like,
- 35:47she does like the Daphne Vasquez.
- 35:48Dani: Me llamo Vasquez.
- 35:49Kara: She's like, "I understood every word of that."
- 35:52Dani: Girl, I only have so much patience.
- 35:55Kara: I know.
- 35:56But in this conversation also, we do hear of bet- between Javy and the
- 36:01restaurant owner that the businesses in East Riverside have been struggling.
- 36:05Restaurants are going under.
- 36:06Dani: Yes, and that is not subtext, because then she turns around to
- 36:09Daphne and says, "The businesses in East Riverside have been struggling
- 36:12and everyone's going under."
- 36:14Kara: Yes.
- 36:14Dani: And also, you're lucky that you got out of here.
- 36:17Kara: Mm-hmm.
- 36:17Dani: Like, she, uh, it, it was just such a heavy-handed plot of
- 36:21them literally being like, "You are so lucky you got out of here.
- 36:24It's really bad here.
- 36:25Everyone needs help." Anyway.
- 36:27Kara: We're at the car wash now.
- 36:29She is in the taco truck with Toby, and they are selling tacos, and the tacos,
- 36:34I believe, are $2 each, which for 20-
- 36:37Dani: The veggie is one.
- 36:38Kara: The veggie is one.
- 36:39Shrimp is two though.
- 36:41Good old days.
- 36:42And I looked it up, 'cause I was like, how much would street tacos
- 36:45cost in Kansas City in 2013?
- 36:47$2, one to $2.
- 36:48Dani: Yeah.
- 36:49Kara: Is right.
- 36:50But John sees the whiteboard, and he's like, "No, no, no, no, no.
- 36:54You need to raise the prices to cover overhead and your time and expertise." And
- 36:58she's like, "I'm not paying rent, and I certainly don't have permits." So, like-
- 37:02Dani: Also, expertise?
- 37:04She's 17.
- 37:05Kara: Yeah.
- 37:06This is a great chance for you to practice.
- 37:08Dani: Yeah, this is pra- also this is practice for her.
- 37:11Kara: Yeah.
- 37:11Dani: This isn't, like, the grand opening.
- 37:12Kara: Nor do you need the money.
- 37:14Dani: This is a soft opening.
- 37:15Kara: Yeah.
- 37:16Dani: Nor does she need the money.
- 37:17So true.
- 37:18Kara: Yeah.
- 37:18So, but he takes an, an eraser to the whiteboard and
- 37:22rewrites $6 for shrimp tacos.
- 37:25That's today, 2026 prices, I think.
- 37:28Dani: I think so too.
- 37:29Kara: That's food truck-
- 37:30Dani: In, in New York in 2026, if I'm paying $6 for a single taco, I'm pissed.
- 37:34Kara: He gets two shrimp tacos, $12 for a plate.
- 37:37That's crazy.
- 37:39Dani: That is cra- for a plate where you're gonna go eat it in the parking lot.
- 37:43A, like, a big part of my complaints with food trucks is, like, I'm, I don't wanna
- 37:47stand there and eat the food like that.
- 37:48Kara: Right.
- 37:49I, I agree.
- 37:50Dani: You know what I mean?
- 37:51For something I'm gonna eat standing up, it should not be more than $10.
- 37:55Kara: Absolutely.
- 37:56Yeah, I agree.
- 37:57But everyone is there to support the food truck opening.
- 38:00Regina and Bay are there too, and they're eating at this, yeah, a combination
- 38:05taco truck, car wash place now.
- 38:08Yeah.
- 38:08I'm at the taco truck.
- 38:08Dani: Whatever.
- 38:09It is.
- 38:09Kara: I'm at the car wash.
- 38:11I'm at the combination taco truck and car wash.
- 38:13Regina is like… Well, first of all, Bay's like, "Carlton is
- 38:18harder than I thought it would be.
- 38:19This is hard." And Regina's like, "Yeah, I get it.
- 38:22I've been there." It'll take some time, but you'll be okay." So that's
- 38:26nice, nice mother-daughter moment.
- 38:28But then Regina's like, "I have some news." And Bay goes, "Is it the baby?
- 38:32Is it Angelo's baby?"
- 38:33Dani: I know about that.
- 38:34Kara: So Regina's like, "Oh, um, how did you find out?" And
- 38:37then she was like, "Yeah, Toby found out and then he told me."
- 38:39Dani: This is the first scene of them together this whole season.
- 38:43I know we're only on episode two, but.
- 38:45Kara: They never see each other.
- 38:46Dani: No.
- 38:47Kara: Regina's always out doing her own thing.
- 38:48Dani: Busy designing pools, I guess.
- 38:50Kara: Yeah, it's strange.
- 38:52Whatever.
- 38:52Daphne made a whopping $253 on her very first day, and then she was
- 38:58like, "Thank you, Toby, for your help.
- 38:59Would you like half the tips?" And he was like, "No, this is all yours."
- 39:02Dani: And then she makes a weird sex joke.
- 39:04I know they didn't grow up together-
- 39:06Kara: That's your brother, though…
- 39:07Dani: but that is your brother.
- 39:08I would never be like, "Oh, yeah, you're gonna go, quote- Practice,
- 39:14rehearse with your girlfriend."
- 39:15Kara: And Toby's like, " I actually am."
- 39:17Dani: "I date a Christian." He goes, "I'm in a Christian band with my mom.
- 39:21We are rehearsing."
- 39:22I don't know.
- 39:23Why are you… They invoke… It's weird.
- 39:26Kara: Same thing with the cleaver fetish.
- 39:27Dani: I'm like- Exactly.
- 39:28That's what I'm thinking of.
- 39:29Kara: Yeah.
- 39:30Dani: The rare moments of Daphne and Toby together are always, this is not familial.
- 39:36Kara: And that would never happen between Bay and Toby.
- 39:38Dani: No.
- 39:39'Cause- And that is, obviously they grew up together, whatever, but
- 39:41it, I don't know, it bothered me.
- 39:43Kara: Different relationship, I guess
- 39:45Dani: Even so, even so, that's your brother.
- 39:48Kara: Yeah.
- 39:49Dani: Genetically speaking.
- 39:50Kara: That is true.
- 39:51I do have a friend who met her brothers later in life, and I
- 39:54think sh- she also would never-
- 39:57Dani: You scared me.
- 39:58For a second, I thought you were going the opposite way with that sentence.
- 40:02I was about to be so scared.
- 40:04Kara: But it's true, he is going to rehearse.
- 40:05He's in the church basement with, uh, Emmett and Nikki.
- 40:08They're jamming.
- 40:09Dani: I know, I keep forgetting that Emmett is also in this band.
- 40:11Kara: Yeah, he's, he likes the drums.
- 40:13Dani: Yeah.
- 40:13Kara: He's having a good time.
- 40:14Dani: I know, he is.
- 40:15Kara: Yeah.
- 40:16Nikki says, "Thanks for playing.
- 40:18Gotta go to youth group.
- 40:19Bye, guys." And Emmett's like, "Toby, we have to speak." And Toby, to his credit,
- 40:24understands pretty much everything.
- 40:26He asks him to repeat himself once, but he gets it's a, very serious conversation.
- 40:30And Emmett goes-
- 40:31Dani: This pissed me off.
- 40:32Kara: I was… Me too.
- 40:33I was looking at our band website.
- 40:34We have a band website now, awesomesauce.com.
- 40:37Okay?
- 40:38Dani: Forgot that's what their band was called.
- 40:40Kara: Yeah.
- 40:41And someone posted, someone has the ability to post on this website-
- 40:44Dani: Right.
- 40:45Is it a blog?
- 40:45Okay.
- 40:46Kara: A forum?
- 40:47Okay.
- 40:47Dani: You guys added a comment section?
- 40:49Kara: And someone posted a picture of Nikki topless, and I didn't take it down.
- 40:55Dani: Right.
- 40:56This pissed me off for so many reasons.
- 40:58Also, I know that there is still a language barrier between him and
- 41:01Nikki, but not a much bigger one than the one between him and Toby.
- 41:06Kara: No.
- 41:07Dani: Why wouldn't Emmett go directly to Nikki?
- 41:09Kara: Mm.
- 41:10Dani: That's what made me so mad.
- 41:11Obviously, the "I didn't take it down" part, maybe he can't… I
- 41:14don't know the rules of this website that they created off-screen.
- 41:17I don't know how it works.
- 41:18But why would you go to the boyfriend?
- 41:21Kara: Good point.
- 41:22Dani: Why wouldn't you go to her?
- 41:23Kara: Yes.
- 41:24So Emmett-
- 41:25Dani: And say, "Oh, my God."
- 41:25Kara: I'm mad at Emmett here.
- 41:27Dani: Yeah, i'm really mad at Emmett.
- 41:28Kara: Yeah.
- 41:29And Toby's like, he gets very huffy.
- 41:31He's like, "Oh, oh, gosh."
- 41:33Dani: Yeah.
- 41:33Kara: Should we wrap this plot up, actually?
- 41:35Dani: Yeah, it's pissing me off.
- 41:36I wanna be done talking about it.
- 41:38Kara: Yeah.
- 41:38Dani: Toby crashes out.
- 41:40Kara: He does.
- 41:41He-
- 41:41Dani: Quietly.
- 41:41Kara: He gets very cold towards her.
- 41:43Dani: Yeah, he's being really weird and cold, and they're rehearsing, and
- 41:46she's like, "We're not kissing as much as we usually are. What's going on?"
- 41:49And he, like, begrudgingly brings up the photo.
- 41:54Kara: Yeah.
- 41:54And to her credit-
- 41:55Dani: Yeah
- 41:56… Kara: she does not apologize.
- 41:57She was like, "Okay."
- 41:58Dani: No.
- 41:58She's like, "Oh, all right."
- 42:00Kara: "I was a freshman in high school and someone took advantage of me
- 42:03when I was going through a very hard time and I'd just lost my father."
- 42:05Dani: Yeah.
- 42:06Also, she's like, "Let me explain," and Toby goes, "No, you don't
- 42:08have to." And she goes, "Well, no, clearly I do, 'cause you're upset."
- 42:12Kara: Yeah.
- 42:12Dani: He's trying to, like, brush it off and under the rug, but also he wants her
- 42:16to know he's upset with her about it.
- 42:18Kara: Yeah.
- 42:19Yeah.
- 42:19Dani: So then, yeah, she explains it.
- 42:21And also, like, it do- it is so teenager to, like, care about that kind of stuff.
- 42:27Kara: Mm-hmm.
- 42:28Dani: Like, why would you give a fuck?
- 42:29But, like, of course he does.
- 42:31So he's upset, and she leaves, and then he talks to Kathryn about it, and
- 42:36Kathryn's like, "Well, I'm just glad Nikki wasn't around when you were stealing
- 42:39tests from your school, or scheming with Wilke, or owed Wilke hundreds of
- 42:44thousands of dollars in gambling debt, or sold all your music equipment."
- 42:48Kara: You're lucky a camera didn't capture all that-
- 42:50Dani: Yeah.
- 42:50Kara: And put it online.
- 42:51Dani: Mind you, good, a good reminder, and Toby wasn't going through
- 42:55anything when that all started.
- 42:57Like, yeah his sister, turns out, was switched at birth.
- 43:00He was already in the hole gambling-wise-
- 43:03Kara: He was
- 43:04… Dani: before that.
- 43:05Kara: Yeah.
- 43:05I'm glad Kathryn gives him a little talking to.
- 43:07Dani: Yeah.
- 43:07Kara: And then also she does a little ABC Family lecture
- 43:09of, like, "That is illegal."
- 43:12Dani: So true.
- 43:13Really important we get that in there.
- 43:15Kara: Yeah.
- 43:16But then Toby's like, "Okay, just got humbled." And then he goes to the
- 43:19church and he apologizes to Nikki.
- 43:22Dani: Yeah.
- 43:22He's like, "I'm outside." Well, he's like, "I'm really sorry." Oh, and then
- 43:27she sends him back like a smiley face or something, and then he calls her-
- 43:30Kara: A winking face.
- 43:30Dani: Yeah, a winky face.
- 43:32He calls her and he's like, "I just can't… I can get behind forgiveness
- 43:37but I can't get behind emoticons." Them calling them emoticons was so funny.
- 43:41I know that is like their legal-
- 43:44Kara: Really?
- 43:44I thought it was emoji and emoticon was like when you do
- 43:47like a colon and a parenthesis.
- 43:49Dani: Well, I think emoji is Apple.
- 43:52Kara: Oh.
- 43:53Dani: I think that's like a specific brand, and I think
- 43:55emoticon is their like neutral-
- 43:58Kara: Oh.
- 43:58The more you know.
- 43:59Dani: I- it's like facial tissue versus Kleenex.
- 44:03Kara: Right.
- 44:03Dani: And it's like no one fucking says, "Hand me a facial tissue," you know?
- 44:07But-
- 44:08Kara: Facial tissue, yeah
- 44:09… Dani: or like saying Google it, but it's like it doesn't really
- 44:12matter what web browser you use-
- 44:15Kara: Yeah.
- 44:15Dani: To search, you know?
- 44:16But emoticons is such a crazy thing to say out loud I feel.
- 44:21Kara: They can't say emoji.
- 44:22Dani: Yeah.
- 44:22Kara: 'Cause of copyright I guess.
- 44:24Dani: And then he's like, "Anyway, come look at the moon. It looks
- 44:26great from the parking lot." And she comes outside and he's out
- 44:29there, and it's romantic, whatever.
- 44:31Kara: Yeah.
- 44:32I'm like, "Okay, I'm glad you apologized."
- 44:34Dani: Yeah.
- 44:34Kara: That's the end of that plot.
- 44:36Dani: That is.
- 44:36That does feel like a pretty realistic crash out.
- 44:39Kara: What is?
- 44:39Dani: Of a teenage boy.
- 44:41Kara: Yes.
- 44:41Dani: Like, not justified, but…
- 44:43Kara: No, not justified, but I can imagine most teenage boys would be huffy.
- 44:49Dani: Yeah, would be like weird and jealous about it.
- 44:51What a strange-
- 44:53Kara: Yeah.
- 44:53But he knows her father died, so I feel like he should-
- 44:57Dani: And she, she hinted at like, "I have a past."
- 44:59Kara: I have a dark past, like so I feel like he should have put two
- 45:03and two together and been like, "Oh, this could have been when she was
- 45:06going through a very hard time."
- 45:07Dani: Yeah.
- 45:08Kara: And she clearly is… I don't think they mention this, but I
- 45:11think she's drunk in the picture.
- 45:12Dani: Yeah.
- 45:13And she's like, what?
- 45:14Freshman year of high school she's like 14, 15.
- 45:17Kara: 14.
- 45:17Dani: Oh, that's so illegal.
- 45:18I hope whoever… I don't remember if this plot gets rehashed later.
- 45:22Also, 'cause he's like, "What, did Jed post it?" Like acting jealous
- 45:27about her ex-boyfriend that she broke up with to be with him.
- 45:30Kara: Right.
- 45:30Dani: It's so- boys are so weird when they're that young.
- 45:32Kara: So strange.
- 45:33Dani: I mean, they may- they remain strange.
- 45:35Kara: But they're even worse back then.
- 45:36Dani: Late
- 45:36Kara: into adulthood.
- 45:37But yeah, it's not so good.
- 45:39Um, anyway, back to another strange, weird boy.
- 45:43Teo's walking around-
- 45:45With Bay.
- 45:45Dani: with Bay in gym class, except they're outside.
- 45:49Kara: They're on their way to gym outside.
- 45:51They're gonna play volleyball.
- 45:52Dani: Yeah.
- 45:53Kara: They're signing or-
- 45:54Dani: Bay is trying to sign and he's like, "Can we just
- 45:57talk?" And she gives in so easy.
- 46:00Kara: Yeah.
- 46:00He goes, "I'm not used to being the outsider. I'm a white boy."
- 46:04Dani: "As a white boy, I have no outsider status." Okay?
- 46:07And Bay does say, like, "Maybe this will be good for you then."
- 46:10Kara: Yeah.
- 46:10Dani: But that was kinda crazy to…
- 46:12There's a lot of just saying the subtext out loud in this episode.
- 46:15Kara: It's so funny.
- 46:16Dani: I'm like, we can fill in things on our own, actually.
- 46:19Kara: Yeah.
- 46:20Dani: But they're, they're, yeah, they're on their way to volleyball
- 46:22and he says- he suggests quiet resistance or something, passive re-
- 46:27Kara: Passive resistance.
- 46:27Dani: Passive resistance.
- 46:29Resistance to what?
- 46:31Why are they in this environment?
- 46:32I'm just so confused about these two people dropping into this environment
- 46:35that was specifically not made for them, and then being like, "Can you believe
- 46:40this environment wasn't made for me?"
- 46:42Kara: You knew this going forward.
- 46:43Dani: It's kind of the whole point of the program.
- 46:46Is it not?
- 46:47Kara: You immerse.
- 46:48You inter- yeah.
- 46:49I, yeah.
- 46:49They're both pissing me off.
- 46:50Dani: It was making me so mad.
- 46:52Kara: It's volleyball time.
- 46:53Dani: It's volleyball time, and I started, I was taking notes, I go, "I love Natalie.
- 46:57She's not even being that mean.
- 46:59Oh, okay, actually she is being kind of mean.
- 47:01That was a lot." 'Cause she starts pushing Bay around.
- 47:04Kara: This is-
- 47:04Dani: Knocking her out of the way…
- 47:06Kara: to my knowledge, this is not how you play volleyball.
- 47:08Dani: No.
- 47:09Kara: You don't shove someone to the side to get the ball.
- 47:11Dani: Yeah, 'cause they're on the same team.
- 47:13Kara: You're on the same team.
- 47:14Dani: And that's what Bay keeps saying, "Same team," but she's
- 47:17signing it kind of badly, so maybe Natalie just doesn't understand her.
- 47:20Kara: Maybe, yeah.
- 47:21Dani: And then Bay reaches her breaking point so fast.
- 47:25Kara: She goes to serve.
- 47:26Dani: She goes to serve, and asks Teo to duck.
- 47:29Also, they're communicating-
- 47:32Kara: They're talking.
- 47:32Dani: Orally in this class.
- 47:34If I was Principal Rose, and I know Principal Rose won't do this, 'cause
- 47:37she's useless, but if I was Principal Rose, I would've expelled her on the spot.
- 47:41It felt like a hate crime for her to be like, "Teo, duck," which no one
- 47:44else around us will be able to hear, so that I can on purpose hit Natalie
- 47:48in the head with the volleyball.
- 47:49She then tries to play it off like it was an accident.
- 47:52Kara: Oh yeah, so she goes to serve, and she purposefully hits Natalie in the back.
- 47:56Dani: Yeah.
- 47:57And then the gym teacher immediately is like, "Get off
- 48:00my court." Also not signing.
- 48:02Kara: No.
- 48:03Dani: Which I guess he doesn't need to, to Bay, but, like,
- 48:05still, so that everyone knows.
- 48:07Whatever.
- 48:07And she's like, "What are you talking about? It was an accident."
- 48:10Kara: No.
- 48:10Dani: No, it wasn't.
- 48:11And then she goes, she maintains that after she, she goes to
- 48:15the principal or whoever.
- 48:17Someone off-screen yells at her, and she comes out, and Emmett's like,
- 48:21"What happened?" And Bay's like, "They think I can aim a volleyball better
- 48:25than I can." Like, she's still trying to be like, "It was an accident."
- 48:28This, you deserve to be expelled.
- 48:31On your first day?
- 48:32That's insane.
- 48:33Kara: That's true.
- 48:34This is on the first day.
- 48:35Dani: Yeah.
- 48:36Kara: My God.
- 48:37Expelled, not suspended.
- 48:38You think that's the punishment?
- 48:40Dani: I think you come into a Deaf space, as part of a pilot program
- 48:43where, like, that's the understanding, and you're speaking orally in the
- 48:47class, scheming out loud with the only other hearing kid in the class-
- 48:51Kara: Yeah
- 48:52… Dani: to assault one of your- Like, obviously we saw it, and
- 48:56it wasn't that dramatic, but, like, let's look at it on paper.
- 48:58Kara: Yeah, that's true.
- 48:59Dani: Like, Natalie's just being ruder than she has to be in the game.
- 49:03Kara: And it's more like-
- 49:03Dani: But she's not just smacking her in the head with the ball.
- 49:06Bay is, smacks her in the back of the head with the ball.
- 49:09Kara: She does.
- 49:10Dani: I would've expelled her.
- 49:11This is insane.
- 49:12Kara: Sure.
- 49:13I'll take it.
- 49:13I don't know if I would've expelled her.
- 49:15I think I would've been like, I guess a detention.
- 49:18Dani: I think it immediately identifies her as not a safe person for that space.
- 49:21Which Natalie also clocks.
- 49:22Kara: But after Bay gets kicked out of volleyball, Travis
- 49:27is at the car wash working.
- 49:28Dani: Yeah.
- 49:29Kara: Daphne is down at the food truck.
- 49:31It's the middle of the school day?
- 49:33Dani: I think Daphne's using the food truck as her seventh period job.
- 49:37Kara: Mm. That's a good point.
- 49:39Dani: 'Cause Travis is also using that period.
- 49:41Kara: He's working.
- 49:41Dani: He's working.
- 49:42So I think if they have a job, they're allowed to use seventh period for that.
- 49:45Kara: Yeah, that's true.
- 49:46I, I remember this from Melody.
- 49:48Daphne's like, "Want some tacos?
- 49:50I have some left over." And Travis is like, "I'm good.
- 49:53I have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich I made at home." And she was
- 49:57like, "You'd rather have that than my delicious tacos?" And he goes, "Well, not
- 50:00everyone can afford $6 shrimp tacos." Tea.
- 50:03And she goes, "Well, it's on me. You're, you don't have to pay." And he's offended.
- 50:07He doesn't like this.
- 50:07Dani: Yeah.
- 50:08He walks away.
- 50:09Kara: Yeah.
- 50:09Back at Carlton, Bay, uh, leaves the admin office, and Emmett catches her leaving,
- 50:15and he's like, "Why did you just leave the principal's office?" And then this is wh-
- 50:19this is when she's like, "I don't know.
- 50:20I think Natalie was being, um, a volley bitch."
- 50:23Dani: She learns nothing.
- 50:25Kara: Noth- you're right.
- 50:25Dani: This whole episode.
- 50:26Kara: You're right.
- 50:26Like, now that I'm reading my notes and, and her being like, "I didn't
- 50:29do anything." I'm like, girl.
- 50:31Dani: Yeah.
- 50:31She's like, "They think I have better aim than I do, and Natalie
- 50:34was being a volley bitch, and all I did was spike it into her head."
- 50:37Bay's being so, like, dim on purpose.
- 50:42I don't know.
- 50:43It feels crazy.
- 50:44She's, the lack of self-awareness.
- 50:46Kara: Yeah.
- 50:46Emmett kind of, um, interprets this as, oh, just like two girls not getting along.
- 50:51Natalie will get to know you and you'll be fine.
- 50:53Dani: Yeah.
- 50:54I, it's very strange and out of character.
- 50:56I guess Emmett's blind spot has always been Bay.
- 50:59Kara: Yeah.
- 50:59I agree.
- 51:00Dani: But I just feel like he's so, like everyone else in his world is Deaf.
- 51:05Kara: And he would-
- 51:05Dani: You think that he would be like, "Yeah, Bay, you're being an asshole."
- 51:08Kara: If he wasn't in love with Bay, he would.
- 51:11Dani: Yeah.
- 51:12Kara: I agree.
- 51:13We are back at the car wash.
- 51:15Dani: Mm-hmm.
- 51:15Kara: John finds Daphne cleaning up the taco truck, and Daphne's like, "I'm
- 51:19gonna bring this ride to East Riverside."
- 51:23And John is like, "No you are not."
- 51:25Dani: She's like, "Stop trying to limit what I can do," and he's basically
- 51:29just like, "I don't know, you're 17."
- 51:31" Kara: Guys, it's not about the area.
- 51:33It's you being alone at night.
- 51:35Dani: At 17 without a fucking permit.
- 51:37Kara: Without a permit.
- 51:38Dani: And it's like your first time doing it, and then she drops
- 51:41all of the produce everywhere.
- 51:43And he tries to help, and she's like, "Don't help me." So clearly it's just
- 51:46like sh, I don't know, Daphne's got her own thing going on, and I get
- 51:50that, but it's frustrating when she's like, "You just don't think I can do
- 51:54it 'cause I'm Deaf." And it's like, no, baby, it's 'cause you can't do it.
- 51:58Kara: It's because you're a minor.
- 51:59Dani: It's 'cause you also can't do it.
- 52:01You also have been working with help.
- 52:03Kara: It feels like-
- 52:04Dani: But no one's with you to help you.
- 52:05Kara: I know.
- 52:06Dani: You can't run a food truck all by yourself.
- 52:08Kara: No, you can't.
- 52:09So-
- 52:09Dani: I
- 52:09Kara: also don't think she should be driving that thing.
- 52:11She's not a very good driver.
- 52:12We've seen her get in two car accidents.
- 52:14Two?
- 52:15Dani: Oh, maybe just the one.
- 52:16I don't know.
- 52:17I just feel like canonically Daphne's not a good driver.
- 52:19Kara: I see that for her.
- 52:20Dani: Yeah.
- 52:21Kara: Yeah.
- 52:22Dani: So what, she's gonna drive it all the way over there and
- 52:24then cook everything herself and then also run the window?
- 52:27You need two people.
- 52:28Kara: You need two, at least two people.
- 52:29Dani: Yeah.
- 52:30So John is like, "Okay, I'll go with you."
- 52:33And I think that's a really fair compromise.
- 52:35Kara: And she's gonna do it on her terms.
- 52:36Great.
- 52:37Cool.
- 52:37Dani: And her terms are pay what you wish.
- 52:40Okay.
- 52:41Kara: Okay.
- 52:41Sure.
- 52:41Dani: Ally.
- 52:42Kara: But before that, Regina is storming into Angelo's apartment.
- 52:45Dani: Oh, I forgot about this.
- 52:46Kara: And then she gets into an elevator, and who is in the
- 52:49elevator with her but pregnant Lana.
- 52:52Dani: Yeah.
- 52:52Kara: And Regina looks at her, and she immediately clocks that this must be
- 52:56the person that Angelo got pregnant.
- 52:58Dani: Mm-hmm.
- 52:59Kara: And they're chatting a little, and one thing we learn
- 53:02is that Lana is in med school.
- 53:04And I think that's the only information we kinda get.
- 53:07Dani: I mean, it's a girl.
- 53:09Kara: And it's a girl.
- 53:09Dani: The baby's a girl.
- 53:10She's, like, six and a half months along.
- 53:13Kara: Yes.
- 53:14Dani: Pregnancy's going well.
- 53:15She's in school.
- 53:17Yeah, I feel like I don't know what comes of this for Regina.
- 53:20Like, I feel like it just kinda broke her heart.
- 53:22Kara: Yeah.
- 53:23Dani: But I feel like it should have reassured her.
- 53:27Like, okay, this is, like, a normal woman who is, like, choosing to have this baby.
- 53:32Kara: Yeah.
- 53:32Dani: Everything's gonna be okay.
- 53:33Kara: And it probably, it's probably derailing her plans a little bit,
- 53:35but she's gonna keep the baby.
- 53:37Dani: Yeah.
- 53:37Kara: She's gonna have the baby.
- 53:38Dani: I know.
- 53:38I just think there's really, there should be a co-parenting solution here.
- 53:41We're all adults.
- 53:42I don't know.
- 53:43Kara: Yeah.
- 53:43Dani: What's one more kid in this, like, gaggle of kids?
- 53:47Kara: Right.
- 53:47I think she's feeling just heartbroken 'cause she's like,
- 53:50"Well, Angelo has notoriously been a very unreliable father."
- 53:54Dani: Fair, but-
- 53:55Kara: And who, is she gonna be the one to tell Lana that?
- 53:58Dani: I feel like sh- Lana knows that already because when she showed up…
- 54:02I guess Regina doesn't know that.
- 54:03Kara: Right, like, "These are my two daughters that I didn't raise."
- 54:06Dani: Yeah.
- 54:06She only showed up because of Angelo's big speech that was in the paper being like-
- 54:10Kara: Right
- 54:11… Dani: "I'm so sad that I missed out on raising my two daughters."
- 54:14Kara: Yeah.
- 54:15Now we're in East Riverside.
- 54:16It's taco time.
- 54:18Daphne's appeasing her white guilt doing the pay what you can,
- 54:21and there's a huge line outside.
- 54:23People are thrilled about these, uh, free and inexpensive tacos.
- 54:27And Javy comes to the truck.
- 54:29Daphne's like, "What can I get you?" And he's like, "Get out of here.
- 54:32This is not cool."
- 54:32Dani: Yeah.
- 54:33Kara: Doesn't really explain why.
- 54:34I, but I think he's kind of just, like-
- 54:36Dani: I mean, I immediately was like, oh yeah, duh, she's parked
- 54:39right near his uncle's business-
- 54:41Kara: Yes.
- 54:41Dani: Giving away free food.
- 54:43Kara: Yeah.
- 54:43Dani: That's not great-
- 54:44Kara: Yes.
- 54:45Dani: For the business.
- 54:46Kara: John is like, "Anyway, I'm gonna go buy more food 'cause we're running out
- 54:50so fast." And while he is out, Daphne is alone in this truck, and it goes dark.
- 54:55And that is because Javy has cut the power to her truck, saying, "Your
- 54:59free meals is stealing business with my uncle's restaurant."
- 55:01And to him, I get it, she's like a rich white girl who doesn't understand.
- 55:05Dani: Yeah.
- 55:06Yeah, I don't know.
- 55:07I think the solution here is she should be like, "Javy, do you
- 55:09wanna come work for my food truck?" Is that what ends up happening?
- 55:12I don't even know.
- 55:13Kara: I don't think so.
- 55:14I doubt it.
- 55:15He would never work for, like, a rich white girl.
- 55:18Dani: I mean, I guess they could go to Mission Hills and he could
- 55:20work for a rich white girl, and-
- 55:22Kara: I guess
- 55:22… Dani: they could charge $6.
- 55:23I don't know.
- 55:24Kara: Either way, it just doesn't look good for her, for, like,
- 55:26this white girl to come into this underserved neighborhood-
- 55:30Dani: Yeah
- 55:30… Kara: I guess, to take away business.
- 55:32Dani: It's tough.
- 55:33It's, every-
- 55:34Kara: It's a tough economic issue.
- 55:35Dani: Every action she thinks is good has also negative impacts.
- 55:39Kara: Yes.
- 55:40Dani: And that's tough.
- 55:41Kara: Yeah, it's a demand displacement.
- 55:43Dani: I just think, like, Daphne's 17, and she's biting off more than she can chew.
- 55:47Kara: Absolutely.
- 55:48Dani: I think it's totally fine if the thing that you do is you run a
- 55:51food truck from your daddy's car wash-
- 55:53Kara: That's fine.
- 55:54Dani: I
- 55:54Kara: think that's good.
- 55:56Like, I don't think you need to be doing Meals on Wheels.
- 56:00It's okay.
- 56:00But then she'll later explain that, like, she feels this
- 56:03immense responsibility to do this.
- 56:05Dani: I think it's coming from a good place, but I'm, like, confused.
- 56:09Daphne's about to crash out on John a little bit.
- 56:12Kara: They have an interesting conversation.
- 56:14They come home, they're unloading the car, and he's trying to make her feel better.
- 56:18He's like, "I don't know, some people have haters.
- 56:20It's fine.
- 56:21You had a great night." And then she gestures to the Kennish house,
- 56:24and she goes, "What did we do to deserve all this?" You know, "Why
- 56:27do we have everything while s- while some people have so little?"
- 56:31Dani: I do really like John going, "I don't know about
- 56:33you, but I know what I did."
- 56:35Kara: He goes, "I worked hard for this." And she goes, "No, you didn't.
- 56:39I mean, like, yes, you worked, but you're lucky." When she
- 56:43says lucky, she means privilege.
- 56:45Dani: I don't think that that term was being thrown around like that in 2013.
- 56:49Kara: Right, 'cause luck is, like, random and unpredictable, but
- 56:51privilege is systemic and advantageous.
- 56:54Dani: Yeah.
- 56:55But I think you- he has privilege and luck.
- 56:59I mean, 'cause it's also like how many talented baseball
- 57:02players still don't make it-
- 57:05Kara: To MLB.
- 57:06Dani: To MLB even if they're maybe just as good, and they just like
- 57:09aren't picked that year or whatever.
- 57:11Kara: Yeah, that's true.
- 57:12So he has, he has talent and luck, but he- and then she kinda lectures him
- 57:17like, "Well," she didn't say this, but like, "You are a rich white man who was
- 57:21born into a, um, a privileged family.
- 57:25You got a good education, and you never have to, you never had to worry
- 57:28about what career you're gonna have."
- 57:31Dani: Yeah.
- 57:32Kara: "And maybe you could pursue baseball 'cause you didn't have to
- 57:34worry about like getting a job."
- 57:36Dani: Mm-hmm.
- 57:37It's really interesting to me how much this show uses Daphne as a vehicle
- 57:42to explore white privilege and wealth inequality, but they use her far
- 57:49less to explore the differences in privilege within the Deaf community.
- 57:56Kara: That's a good point.
- 57:57Dani: They really don't do a lot of that.
- 57:58Kara: And that's 'cause none of the writers were Deaf.
- 58:00Dani: Yeah, I guess that's probably-
- 58:02Kara: I feel like that's why
- 58:03… Dani: why they weren't diving into it, 'cause, like, apart from even
- 58:06when Travis is like, "My parents are gonna kick me out when I turn 18"-
- 58:10Kara: That's kind of it.
- 58:11Dani: She, like… She's like, "Oh, that sucks." Like, there's no, like…
- 58:15If I were Daphne, I feel like the thing that I'd feel sick about more is that.
- 58:19And obviously she has, in the last season, she had all that, like, "I have this
- 58:23weight on me, carrying this community."
- 58:26Kara: Right.
- 58:27Dani: But she refers to it like a monolith.
- 58:29Kara: Yes.
- 58:29Dani: She's never really exploring that aspect.
- 58:32Kara: She, yeah, she doesn't…
- 58:33You're right.
- 58:33Dani: I feel like she'll do more of that and I'm just not remembering it,
- 58:36but it's just so interesting to be like, yeah, Daphne feels called to
- 58:40return to East Riverside all the time to, like, serve her community, but she
- 58:44waited until the end of the day to, like, check if Travis wanted tacos.
- 58:48I don't know.
- 58:49Kara: Yeah, it's strange.
- 58:50It's… She feels less ties to the Deaf community, I feel than she,
- 58:54than she does to East Riverside.
- 58:56Dani: Well, she's Daphne Vasquez.
- 58:58Kara: It's Vasquez.
- 58:59Dani: It's Vasquez.
- 59:00Kara: Yeah.
- 59:00Dani: Yeah.
- 59:01Kara: I think what John says to Daphne is, um, "It's what you do with the luck
- 59:05that counts," which is not entirely true because then I was like, well, Bay has
- 59:10never been into schooling, and yet she does go to this elite private school.
- 59:15Well, she did.
- 59:16Dani: Mm-hmm.
- 59:17Kara: So I'm like, n- not entirely luck, it's privilege, guys.
- 59:20Dani: Well, yeah, but she just gave all that up to go to Carlton anyway.
- 59:23Kara: Sure.
- 59:24And she still has privilege there.
- 59:25Dani: Not if you asked her.
- 59:27Kara: No.
- 59:27Dani: If you asked her, she's experiencing adversity for the first time.
- 59:31Kara: Yeah.
- 59:32Either way, Daphne just, uh, seems like, "I can't take this newfound privilege
- 59:37for granted," which is so interesting.
- 59:39Dani: Yeah, she has a lot of guilt, and she doesn't know,
- 59:43like, a productive way to use it.
- 59:44But, like, it's okay that you're 17 and you can't save all the failing
- 59:49businesses in East Riverside.
- 59:50Kara: No.
- 59:51Dani: I don't know.
- 59:52I just feel like she's really spiraling about the food truck.
- 59:54The amount of times in this episode she goes, "I have a food truck." It's crazy.
- 59:59Kara: "I have a business." You just started it today.
- 1:00:02Dani: Girl boss, take a break.
- 1:00:03It's okay.
- 1:00:04Kara: It's fine.
- 1:00:05But after this conversation, this makes John do a little self-reflecting.
- 1:00:08And he's like, "As state senator, I should be helping."
- 1:00:11Dani: I will enact change.
- 1:00:12Kara: I should be enacting change for the, the people who are
- 1:00:16underserved and can't get things.
- 1:00:18Dani: And here's the thing.
- 1:00:19I do not trust John to do that job.
- 1:00:21Kara: Republican John.
- 1:00:22Dani: Yeah, I don't think he's gonna do a good job.
- 1:00:24But him and Kathryn are sitting in the kitchen, and they're sharing a bowl
- 1:00:27of yogurt or ice cream or something.
- 1:00:30I don't know what it is.
- 1:00:30Kara: I hope it's ice cream.
- 1:00:31Dani: I don't know what it i- it, I don't think there's
- 1:00:33anything in the bowl, frankly.
- 1:00:34But they're sharing a spoon.
- 1:00:36Kara: Sure.
- 1:00:36Dani: And they are eating, pretending to eat food off of it, whatever it is.
- 1:00:40Kara: Great.
- 1:00:40Dani: And I was like, "Oh, that's kinda sweet." But then they call each other
- 1:00:43Bill and Hillary and that was less sweet.
- 1:00:45Kara: Good night, Hillary.
- 1:00:46Dani: Canonically accurate.
- 1:00:48Kara: That is true.
- 1:00:48Dani: Yeah.
- 1:00:49Those characters would love that couple.
- 1:00:51Kara: Yeah.
- 1:00:51Dani: So.
- 1:00:51And then it's the next day at Carlton.
- 1:00:53Kara: It is.
- 1:00:54Dani: And
- 1:00:54Kara: Bay has put on yet another fuck-ass long sleeve outfit.
- 1:00:57She's wearing so many layers.
- 1:00:59It's polka dots, but it really looks like it's holes in the top at first.
- 1:01:03So I was like, "Damn, that's risky." But it's, it's just polka dots, guys.
- 1:01:06Don't worry.
- 1:01:07No skin was showing at all.
- 1:01:08I was too distracted because I knew she was gonna go up to
- 1:01:11Natalie, and I was quite stressed-
- 1:01:13Dani: Yeah
- 1:01:13… Kara: for what was gonna happen.
- 1:01:14And she continues simcomming.
- 1:01:16Dani: Continues to simcom.
- 1:01:17And no, I don't, I don't think anyone ever calls her out for that.
- 1:01:20And I know it's for us, but at this point, it's season 2, guys.
- 1:01:24I think the audience would've been fine.
- 1:01:26Kara: I wish Natalie dropped a line in the middle of her rant
- 1:01:29and been like, "And stop that."
- 1:01:31Dani: "And close your mouth, bitch."
- 1:01:32Kara: Right.
- 1:01:33But she goes up to Natalie.
- 1:01:35She doesn't really have an awakening of, like, "Oh, I did a bad thing." She just-
- 1:01:39Dani: No
- 1:01:39… Kara: we don't see that.
- 1:01:40Dani: She's like, "Can we start over?"
- 1:01:42And Natalie's like, "Whatever." And then Bay's like, "Okay,
- 1:01:45clearly that didn't work."
- 1:01:47Kara: That wasn't an apology.
- 1:01:48Dani: Yeah.
- 1:01:49I think Bay says, "What is your problem?"
- 1:01:51Kara: She says, "Sorry for hitting you with the volleyball, but
- 1:01:53you were asking for it, okay?"
- 1:01:55Dani: That's, you were asking for it is crazy.
- 1:01:57Kara: Crazy.
- 1:01:58Just do the first part of that sentence and that would've been fine.
- 1:02:01Dani: Yeah.
- 1:02:01She should've, she should've said, "Sorry I was a volley bitch. I thought
- 1:02:05you were the volley bitch. Turns out I was the volley bitch all along"
- 1:02:09Kara: Right.
- 1:02:09Dani: Right.
- 1:02:10But Natalie's not having it, and then she starts her good lecture, I think.
- 1:02:15She goes, "Everywhere I go in this world I have to accommodate hearing people,
- 1:02:18except at one place, and that's Carlton.
- 1:02:21Kara: But now with this pilot program, everything's gonna be rebuilt around you
- 1:02:24hearing kids, and now there's truly gonna be no safe sa- no safe space for me."
- 1:02:30Dani: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:31Kara: "And they can put us in the same school, but you will never belong here."
- 1:02:35Dani: Go off, girl.
- 1:02:36Kara: Yeah.
- 1:02:36Punch in the gut to Bay, who has never had to think about it
- 1:02:39this way because she is hearing.
- 1:02:40Dani: Yeah.
- 1:02:41She left Buckner because she felt like she never belonged at Buckner.
- 1:02:46Kara: And now she doesn't belong there, so.
- 1:02:48Dani: But she's choosing to go to another school-
- 1:02:50Kara: Where she's the minority
- 1:02:51… Dani: where she so visibly does not belong.
- 1:02:54Kara: Yeah.
- 1:02:55That is true.
- 1:02:55Dani: That is not a good learning environment for her.
- 1:02:58She is not fluent.
- 1:02:59Kara: I just hope she catches up.
- 1:03:01Dani: This is, like, how my nightmares are.
- 1:03:03This is exactly how my nightmares are- when I ha- when I'm having dreams in
- 1:03:06sign language and I'm stressed out.
- 1:03:07Kara: You always have dreams where someone's signing to you and you don't
- 1:03:10know the-
- 1:03:10Dani: And
- 1:03:10Kara: I don't understand.
- 1:03:11Right.
- 1:03:11Dani: And it's like why would you willingly put yourself in that situation?
- 1:03:14She could've tried public school.
- 1:03:16Kara: That's true.
- 1:03:16Dani: She could've just, she could… I bet there is an insane
- 1:03:20arts private school in Kansas City-
- 1:03:23Kara: I bet
- 1:03:24… Dani: that's like Buckner but for kids that wanna spray paint
- 1:03:27cars or whatever the fuck.
- 1:03:29Kara: That's true.
- 1:03:29It didn't, yeah, Buckner was not the only option, or Carlton.
- 1:03:33Dani: I know for the plot they just had to put her there,
- 1:03:35but I wish they wouldn't have.
- 1:03:36I feel like they're doing character assassination on Bay.
- 1:03:39Kara: Either way, I think being hearing is interestingly li- like
- 1:03:43a lot like being white and rich.
- 1:03:44You know, it's a privileged position.
- 1:03:47Dani: Yeah.
- 1:03:47Kara: So I think it was an interesting path for each of the girls to go down.
- 1:03:51Dani: Yeah.
- 1:03:52Kara: To, like, realize what position they were in.
- 1:03:54Dani: I know.
- 1:03:55I just wish they were less insufferable about it.
- 1:03:57Kara: Yeah.
- 1:03:58That's the end of the episode.
- 1:03:59Dani: That's the end of the episode, guys.
- 1:04:01Kara: Yeah, Natalie says, "You'll never belong," and then that's it.
- 1:04:04Bay just walks away in the hallway sadly.
- 1:04:07Dani: I know they become friends later, so, like-
- 1:04:10Kara: Yeah.
- 1:04:11And her anger is so warranted.
- 1:04:13Dani: Yeah.
- 1:04:14Kara: Every time there's a hearing person in a Deaf space, I'm
- 1:04:16like, "Ugh." Not you, but like-
- 1:04:18Dani: No, I get it
- 1:04:19… Kara: especially if they're speaking, I'm like, "shut up."
- 1:04:22Shut up.
- 1:04:23Dani: Shut up.
- 1:04:23It's just like, why would you put yourself in that position to not…
- 1:04:28Kara: And if you go to a Deaf space, shut up.
- 1:04:31Dani: Yeah.
- 1:04:31Be respectful.
- 1:04:32Kara: Yeah.
- 1:04:33It's a sign of respect, and that's how you learn.
- 1:04:35Dani: Also, simcomming is fucking annoying to do.
- 1:04:38It's harder.
- 1:04:39Kara: It's so hard.
- 1:04:39Dani: It's harder.
- 1:04:40You're making it harder on yourself.
- 1:04:42Kara: And everyone to understand you.
- 1:04:44Dani: Yeah.
- 1:04:45Kara: It doesn't help anyone.
- 1:04:46Dani: I love chocolate milk.
- 1:04:48I love the sign for milk.
- 1:04:49Kara: Oh my God.
- 1:04:50Dani: All right.
- 1:04:51Bye.
- 1:04:52Kara: Bye.
- 1:04:52Thanks for listening.
