Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / David Nottage: Ruapehu District Councillor on the rubbish dumping along the Desert Road detour
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Not looking good and pay Who roadside dumping is an
- 0:03Speaker 1: increasing problem along the Desert Road. Deep Tour n ZTA
- 0:06Speaker 1: have received backlash for the handling of the rubbish and
- 0:08Speaker 1: it's clean up. So the real pay Who District councilor
- 0:11Speaker 1: at David Nottage has now taken to collecting the rubbish
- 0:13Speaker 1: in his Purser truck and David joins you now, Hello, David,
- 0:16Speaker 1: good on you man, good morning.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Good morning. Yeah, it's bit of a I don't know
- 0:22Speaker 2: if it's this bad timing for when I go driving
- 0:24Speaker 2: out on the State Hallway ball, but he just seems
- 0:27Speaker 2: that every time I'm out there, and well I've got
- 0:30Speaker 2: trucks and my youth, there's always seems to be a
- 0:33Speaker 2: lot of rubbish out there.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Well, good on you on your dedication to public service. Mate.
- 0:37Speaker 1: So here's the thing. Is this rubbish directly correlating to
- 0:39Speaker 1: the deeptour being in place? Or have the people of
- 0:41Speaker 1: Rupey who just suddenly got messy.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Well it's hard to well, the last rest here I
- 0:49Speaker 2: cleaned up. It's hard to believe that travelers would carry
- 0:54Speaker 2: that much rubbish with them. And yes, people might be
- 0:59Speaker 2: taking an advantage of the you know, the detour, but yeah,
- 1:04Speaker 2: the last one here, there's lots of lots of recyclable
- 1:07Speaker 2: stuff on their cans, you know, bottles, plastic bottles, and
- 1:13Speaker 2: I just yeah, just general household rubbishpins dump there as well.
- 1:17Speaker 2: It's all on black bags. I tried to see if
- 1:20Speaker 2: it could actually you know, band black so bags as well.
- 1:24Speaker 1: So it's tourists not truckings.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Uh, well, no, we don't know, you know, un least
- 1:29Speaker 2: we you know, you know, I don't see anyone doing it,
- 1:33Speaker 2: but it just seems to appear.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Should should it ends it? Here's the thing? Should endz
- 1:38Speaker 1: in ta be stepping up his rubbish rubbish collection frequency
- 1:41Speaker 1: so you can step down.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Yeah, it would be nice, But it would also be
- 1:46Speaker 2: nice if tivys didn't throw their rubbish out, you know,
- 1:48Speaker 2: they pack it in. They should pack it out, you know,
- 1:52Speaker 2: take it home and you know, dispose of it how
- 1:54Speaker 2: they should dispose of it. But yeah, it has been
- 1:58Speaker 2: disappointing that they may be a contingency for the amount
- 2:02Speaker 2: of rubbish that could appear on our road. You know,
- 2:06Speaker 2: it could have been mitigated, I think.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Yeah, and how is this detour affecting the local economy?
- 2:13Speaker 1: I know that Johnny Nation's Bakery and Akuny is doing
- 2:16Speaker 1: roaring business, is it. Are there wins and losses?
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely. I think from what we've been told
- 2:24Speaker 2: that you know, it's not just Oakuni that's having a
- 2:27Speaker 2: bit of a windfall National Park rather he Wanganui. Yeah,
- 2:31Speaker 2: I know it's tai happy and bulls maybe in Wau
- 2:35Speaker 2: might be striking a little bit. But you know, once
- 2:37Speaker 2: the detour comes off, I'm pretty sure that you know,
- 2:40Speaker 2: the economy will will go back to how it normally is.
- 2:44Speaker 2: But hope, we're hoping that more people will use State
- 2:47Speaker 2: Highway for once the desert road and you know see
- 2:51Speaker 2: that it's just as pretty as the desert road. It's
- 2:54Speaker 2: not prettier, absolutely, as long as they keep their rubber
- 2:56Speaker 2: from their car.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Good good call, David, and thank you so much for
- 2:59Speaker 1: what you've been doing. David Nottage's a council at the
- 3:01Speaker 1: rue pe Hoo District Council.
