- 0:35Speaker 1: What else we've got coming up today? Kevin?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Well, first of all, I think we should explain that
- 0:38Speaker 2: we couldn't make it last week, could we be? We
- 0:41Speaker 2: were at Sporty Venues, I was at the Diamond League
- 0:44Speaker 2: Athletics in London and you were on away day with
- 0:47Speaker 2: the folks and.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Yeah, up at Bradford. What a journey that was. The
- 0:51Speaker 1: twenty five, the EM eleven, the m whatever it was
- 0:55Speaker 1: was not playing Born. It took us six and a
- 0:56Speaker 1: half hours to get there last Friday, but hey ho,
- 1:00Speaker 1: it was good fun. We come away with the two
- 1:02Speaker 1: Neil victory. We've got time while I'll have a chat
- 1:05Speaker 1: about that a little bit later on. But well, yeah.
- 1:07Speaker 2: I mean we've got our special guesting today. It is
- 1:10Speaker 2: the new Romney. Last year they were the under thirteens.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Now next year there will be the under fourteens. But
- 1:15Speaker 2: they undertook a massive bike ride for a charity and
- 1:19Speaker 2: they're going to be telling us all about it later.
- 1:21Speaker 2: So we welcome Paul Eagan and his son Charlie fourteen.
- 1:25Speaker 2: We've got Charlotte and Alfie, so they'll be kin an
- 1:29Speaker 2: one us make sure we get the job done properly,
- 1:32Speaker 2: but we could just have a chat find out what
- 1:35Speaker 2: it takes. They so icled one hundred and forty seven miles,
- 1:39Speaker 2: but we've got a little time to find out exactly
- 1:42Speaker 2: how it went. The highs and the lows and the
- 1:44Speaker 2: punctures we little gamble. I think how many punctures they've
- 1:48Speaker 2: got over eighty children. So we'll let you get on
- 1:52Speaker 2: with some music.
- 1:53Speaker 1: First of all, yeah, we was certainly will and well
- 1:57Speaker 1: are they they're all heroes, aren't they? So well, we've
- 2:00Speaker 1: working David Bowie this morning and this one from nineteen
- 2:03Speaker 1: seventy seven. This one is called self the main title
- 2:08Speaker 1: of Heroes. We go glad you Vid Bowie and Heroes.
- 2:25Speaker 2: What a track that is good, that brilliant and it
- 2:27Speaker 2: just sums up what we're glad to talk about, doesn't it.
- 2:30Speaker 2: So today we're in the studio of radio Folks on
- 2:33Speaker 2: the Sady Sports Show, and I'm joined today by Paul Egan. Hello, Paul,
- 2:37Speaker 2: good morning, right, you're good and Charlie good morning. How
- 2:40Speaker 2: are you morning? I'm good, thank you good, excellent. Right.
- 2:42Speaker 2: So now then, Paul, I'm going to hand over to
- 2:45Speaker 2: you really for a little while. So just tell us
- 2:48Speaker 2: what you was up to a few weekends ago. It
- 2:51Speaker 2: was the hottest one at the time. It was the
- 2:53Speaker 2: hottest weekend of the year. But you chose to do
- 2:56Speaker 2: something to I don't know, normally most people wouldn't have done.
- 3:01Speaker 2: But tell us all about it. What you've been up
- 3:03Speaker 2: to then.
- 3:04Speaker 3: So, yeah, last Friday or Friday before we set off
- 3:08Speaker 3: on a bit of a journey, really a bit of
- 3:10Speaker 3: a challenge. There was a challenge set for one hundred
- 3:14Speaker 3: and forty seven miles in three days. There was myself
- 3:20Speaker 3: and the three coaches, Tommy, Sam and Frankie and eight
- 3:25Speaker 3: young lads decided to set off.
- 3:27Speaker 4: On this challenge.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Eight of you. Yeah, So Charlie, Charlie come in, so Charlie,
- 3:31Speaker 2: when your dad said to you as your fancy cycling
- 3:35Speaker 2: one hundred and forty seven miles, what was your first reaction.
- 3:38Speaker 5: I don't know if I'd be able to do it
- 3:39Speaker 5: at first, to be honest, ye, quiet challenge. Yeah, to
- 3:43Speaker 5: even think of it, it was like, it's going to
- 3:44Speaker 5: hurt so bad. Yeah, but I think we'll push for
- 3:47Speaker 5: it very well towards good three days.
- 3:50Speaker 2: And you obviously wrote some of your teammates into it.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Were they were they excited about it or a bit
- 3:56Speaker 2: scared of it.
- 3:58Speaker 5: Well, the train session before we were all very scared
- 4:00Speaker 5: about it because it was morally just the four of
- 4:02Speaker 5: one hundred miles. It really does think with ut Yeah,
- 4:06Speaker 5: but yeah, we all push for it and it was
- 4:09Speaker 5: a very exciting thing. Yeah, and it was good to
- 4:12Speaker 5: get like teamwork got built up a bit more and
- 4:16Speaker 5: helping each other.
- 4:16Speaker 1: So yeah, right, how do you actually train to do this?
- 4:21Speaker 1: I mean obviously you all ride bikes normally during the
- 4:24Speaker 1: week or whatever, But how do you actually trained to
- 4:27Speaker 1: do that sort of a distance?
- 4:29Speaker 5: Don't know. We just we sometimes when I was a
- 4:32Speaker 5: team just around for like a few miles, most like
- 4:36Speaker 5: weekends and stuff like that.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Okay, cool getting back to you, Paul, I mean, and
- 4:42Speaker 2: it's bad enough for children to do it, But how
- 4:45Speaker 2: did you feel about So? I like thin one hundred
- 4:46Speaker 2: and forty seven miles.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Coming from someone who's I wouldn't say, spent a lot
- 4:50Speaker 3: of time on a bike, it was quite daunting. It
- 4:53Speaker 3: started off exciting at the beginning, and then as we
- 4:56Speaker 3: got closer and closer the realizations started to hit as
- 5:00Speaker 3: and forty seven miles yeah, yeah, sat on a seat.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Yeah, but we must must point out that it was
- 5:05Speaker 2: over what three days, wasn't it?
- 5:07Speaker 4: It was? Yeah, So I'll.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Tell you what run us through if you're like a
- 5:10Speaker 2: day at a time, so you know, take us from
- 5:13Speaker 2: where you started and how far you've got on the
- 5:15Speaker 2: first day.
- 5:16Speaker 3: So we set off from Euromney. So we set off
- 5:20Speaker 3: from the Marsh Academy. We cycled up through great Stone
- 5:25Speaker 3: into Dungeness. We've done the route all the way through
- 5:28Speaker 3: to Rye. We hit Camber. We stopped off at Camber.
- 5:34Speaker 3: There was a cafe there that supplied ice creams and
- 5:36Speaker 3: drinks for the boys. And then the journey took us
- 5:40Speaker 3: through into Ashrad the other side of Ashfred where we
- 5:44Speaker 3: stopped off and that was our first camp site.
- 5:47Speaker 4: So we yeah, set off there and set up for
- 5:50Speaker 4: the night. Right.
- 5:51Speaker 2: So so the first night of camping, I take it
- 5:55Speaker 2: you had a support team following you with all the
- 5:57Speaker 2: gear inside.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Yeah, we had a and that followed us from start
- 6:02Speaker 3: to finish. Really, so we had Serena, we had Faye,
- 6:07Speaker 3: and we had the parents, Cassie and Bradley, who the
- 6:11Speaker 3: charity that we were doing it for.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Right, We'll talk about the charity in a minute. But
- 6:15Speaker 2: Charlie come in. And so Charlie, when that first day
- 6:20Speaker 2: was out of the way, did you think, do you
- 6:22Speaker 2: know what I could do this? Or do you think,
- 6:23Speaker 2: oh my no, I'm not word. What am I going
- 6:25Speaker 2: to do for the next two days?
- 6:27Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 6:28Speaker 5: Looking forward, it was very hard to think of the
- 6:30Speaker 5: amount of males that we still had left from the
- 6:32Speaker 5: first day. But yeah, it was not as painful.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Right right, Okay, And I must, I must this is
- 6:40Speaker 2: a question I think. I think I ask Adrian as
- 6:42Speaker 2: well because I'm curious. We're going to have a guess.
- 6:45Speaker 2: So how many bikes were actually on on the on
- 6:48Speaker 2: the course? So there was there was eight youngsters and
- 6:51Speaker 2: how many seniors were there?
- 6:53Speaker 3: So there was four seniors. So yeah, myself, Tommy, Frank
- 6:58Speaker 3: and Sam.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Right, so there's twelve bikes, so over three days, how
- 7:02Speaker 2: many punch as you? Reckon, Adrian?
- 7:05Speaker 1: I mean these days they took the tires and everything
- 7:07Speaker 1: and a lot better than they were in are they.
- 7:11Speaker 2: It's got a bit a couple of days, surely reckon six.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I'm gonna say four four?
- 7:17Speaker 2: Okay, come on, Paul.
- 7:19Speaker 3: So there was one person that I think reached double figures,
- 7:24Speaker 3: and that was Sam, who was in front, who was
- 7:26Speaker 3: our guide.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Yeah, he was the man who had so.
- 7:28Speaker 2: He took it for the team. Did he drove over
- 7:31Speaker 2: all the nails in the road?
- 7:33Speaker 3: And I think Harry got I think Harry got two.
- 7:36Speaker 3: But yeah, the rest of us come away unscathed.
- 7:40Speaker 1: How do you sort that out? On route? If you
- 7:42Speaker 1: get a punch, the support team help you?
- 7:45Speaker 3: No, I think Sam he's quite an experienced cyclist. I
- 7:49Speaker 3: for one sat and amazed how he changed the tires
- 7:51Speaker 3: so quick. It was literally a couple of minutes. Oh yeah,
- 7:55Speaker 3: it was literally like that. I think at one point.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Did his look when he got better? Us have been
- 8:00Speaker 2: like a sticky glass r all over it.
- 8:02Speaker 3: We got to the folks in Harbor arm on the
- 8:04Speaker 3: last bit, and he did decide to change he's inner
- 8:06Speaker 3: tube and yeah, swapped over.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Okay, So so Charlie moving in. So Charlie, you hit
- 8:13Speaker 2: the first night, and and do you have to put
- 8:16Speaker 2: your own tents up or did the support team do
- 8:18Speaker 2: that for you?
- 8:19Speaker 5: No, that's not ourselves. Some of us had pop up
- 8:21Speaker 5: tents and some had proper tents. You have to hang
- 8:24Speaker 5: down stuff.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Yeah, So what was the feeling like on that first night?
- 8:27Speaker 2: You must have been buzzing, you know, you must have
- 8:28Speaker 2: been the team spirit must have been really high.
- 8:31Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean we were all tired, but we played
- 8:35Speaker 5: football cricket that night for quite a well quite shocking,
- 8:40Speaker 5: but yeah, still like helping each other on.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, okay. And did you sleep well or was
- 8:45Speaker 2: it because it was a very hot weekend.
- 8:46Speaker 5: Wasn't it very hot, especially with the tent very crammed in? Yes,
- 8:53Speaker 5: let well, and we're just ready for the next day.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Really great, So Paul come back. So the next day
- 9:00Speaker 2: when you get up, when you're all aching, did you
- 9:02Speaker 2: get give you give a warm up before you got
- 9:04Speaker 2: in your bikes? And where'd you go for breakfast?
- 9:06Speaker 3: So breakfast was provided by the sports team so they
- 9:10Speaker 3: brought us of cereals and crossants and things like that,
- 9:13Speaker 3: so coffees were made. The morning for me was probably
- 9:19Speaker 3: the worst bit, as the tent that was advertised was
- 9:22Speaker 3: seven foot It wasn't seven, but quite a relief to
- 9:25Speaker 3: undo the tent door and stretch. But the boys there
- 9:29Speaker 3: were great spirits. The young lads were up. We had
- 9:31Speaker 3: a shower, we started to pack the tents down to
- 9:35Speaker 3: put back into the van and yeah, they was ready
- 9:37Speaker 3: to go.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Okay, well, I think we take a little break now
- 9:40Speaker 2: and play some music, Gagent, So what have you got
- 9:43Speaker 2: for us there?
- 9:45Speaker 1: It's one of them songs that I've been listening to
- 9:47Speaker 1: through the week and you can't get out of your head.
- 9:50Speaker 1: This one is by in Excess, another band I went
- 9:53Speaker 1: to see thankfully when they were Michael Hudgens was still
- 9:56Speaker 1: alive and this one's called Mystifi Well was missing.
- 10:03Speaker 7: Streets, Almend Books, Michael Hutchins there in Excess from nineteen
- 10:18Speaker 7: eighty nine and mister Pie.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I think it was about nineteen ninety when I went
- 10:23Speaker 1: to see them at the Smith.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Odian Odeon is the big one. The Odion was kind
- 10:28Speaker 2: of a cinema.
- 10:29Speaker 1: That I remember I was definitely hammer smith stomach Yep.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Anyway back to Paul and Charlie.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Okay, Paul and Charlie, now I think, excuse me, we
- 10:38Speaker 2: have been chatting, but I think it's a time we
- 10:40Speaker 2: started a bit of name drop in. So Charlie come
- 10:43Speaker 2: in so so tell us, tell us all the names,
- 10:48Speaker 2: just to just see Christian names of the rest of
- 10:51Speaker 2: your team in case they're listening.
- 10:52Speaker 5: So we had Vinnie, Oscar Harley, Me, Frank, Archie, harrisy
- 10:57Speaker 5: and Aiden Aiden.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Right. So, I mean it's a tough call for you know,
- 11:03Speaker 2: lads your age, and I should think some handled it
- 11:06Speaker 2: better than others. But was there anything humorous that happened?
- 11:10Speaker 2: You know, any any stories you want to tell that
- 11:13Speaker 2: you don't have to because what's stays on tour, you know,
- 11:16Speaker 2: goes stays on tour. But I was I'm sure you
- 11:20Speaker 2: must have had some really funny moments.
- 11:22Speaker 5: So yeah, down near like Whitsball, we had Frank who
- 11:28Speaker 5: was smiling at a camera and didn't see this like
- 11:31Speaker 5: metal like pole thing in front of him and went
- 11:33Speaker 5: straight into very funny moment.
- 11:36Speaker 1: How was the bike?
- 11:38Speaker 5: It was all right after Actually he just got up
- 11:40Speaker 5: and just kind of laughed it off, which was surprising,
- 11:43Speaker 5: but did you get it on camera? You can hear
- 11:46Speaker 5: the bike like you can't see it because the camera
- 11:49Speaker 5: went down very quick. And then there's a nickname for Frank,
- 11:55Speaker 5: which is an actual name as Frank Gilbert. Were now
- 11:58Speaker 5: nickname him Hilbert Hilbert because about hated all the hills.
- 12:03Speaker 2: So Hilbert, if you're listening, you're famous, and get out
- 12:07Speaker 2: and get on that bike and do some training. But no,
- 12:11Speaker 2: it's just what you What you did was daunting for you,
- 12:15Speaker 2: would have been daunting for an adult that hasn't that
- 12:17Speaker 2: much cycling experience. So okay, Paul, So we're into day two,
- 12:21Speaker 2: we're at Ashford. Now what was the next port call?
- 12:25Speaker 2: You obviously had these days mapped out, so where were
- 12:27Speaker 2: you aiming for?
- 12:29Speaker 3: So our next port call really was Warmer. So our
- 12:32Speaker 3: challenge was to leave Ashford, cut up through why then
- 12:37Speaker 3: going into Canterbury, through the Canterbury to Whitstable Herne Bay
- 12:43Speaker 3: and then the challenge we'll see from Whitstaball to Margate.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Was the headwind was?
- 12:48Speaker 2: It was that the toughest bit. I was very flat
- 12:50Speaker 2: over there. But if it's testing, if you've got the
- 12:54Speaker 2: wind against your wem that that day then.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Absolutely, so we stopped at whitstaball we've refueled, We got
- 13:01Speaker 3: the boys some pizza and some drinks, and then we
- 13:05Speaker 3: hit the seafront, which was the probably i would say,
- 13:09Speaker 3: the biggest challenge to a lot of the boys and
- 13:12Speaker 3: for us sort of adults.
- 13:13Speaker 4: The headwind was so strong.
- 13:16Speaker 3: You've got visuals from Reculver looking through to Margate and
- 13:20Speaker 3: then yeah, it doesn't get any closer the longer you
- 13:23Speaker 3: go in.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I've walked in and I remember years ago
- 13:27Speaker 2: running along that. It's like a prominen I'd buy to say,
- 13:29Speaker 2: isn't it? And it just like it disappears into the distance,
- 13:31Speaker 2: doesn't it? Yeah, never ending, Yeah.
- 13:33Speaker 4: Never ending.
- 13:34Speaker 3: So there was a few moments I think Tommy had
- 13:37Speaker 3: a few of the boys where we sort of they
- 13:41Speaker 3: were struggling.
- 13:42Speaker 4: They're really really struggling.
- 13:43Speaker 3: I think you could tell morale was probably getting a
- 13:46Speaker 3: bit low at that point. But I think there was
- 13:48Speaker 3: a few words that this is the reason why we're
- 13:51Speaker 3: doing this. Yeah, take yourself back, look what we're doing,
- 13:55Speaker 3: the awareness and stuff that we're doing at the moment.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Yeah, well you made a good point there. We're talking
- 13:58Speaker 2: about what happened over three days. But I think we
- 14:02Speaker 2: should go back to to basics really and and why
- 14:05Speaker 2: you're doing it. So, I mean, how did it come about?
- 14:09Speaker 2: What is there a connection with young lies versus cancer?
- 14:12Speaker 1: There is?
- 14:13Speaker 3: Yeah, So Tommy the one of the coaches managers, we
- 14:20Speaker 3: the club have been supporting the front of the players
- 14:22Speaker 3: shirts for a number of years now with with the
- 14:25Speaker 3: logo it refers back to Tommy's nephew sadly passed away at
- 14:30Speaker 3: young age. That the charity still supports the family now
- 14:35Speaker 3: from and unfortunately they lost young Arthur. So this is
- 14:40Speaker 3: the main reason why we're supporting the charity.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Right right, So there's a lot of motivation. Perhaps they've
- 14:46Speaker 2: always I suppose you know, at that young age. They
- 14:49Speaker 2: probably don't realize. I don't know whether it did sink
- 14:51Speaker 2: in as they as they took on this challenge, Paul,
- 14:55Speaker 2: but it is. It is a driving force to keep
- 14:59Speaker 2: keep people going, isn't it? Okay? So while we're on
- 15:04Speaker 2: the subject, I mean, I saw initially that your target
- 15:08Speaker 2: was about one thousand pounds fifteen hundred pounds. Great, so
- 15:11Speaker 2: you've surpassed that immensely. So tell us how much was
- 15:14Speaker 2: the latest shout.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Yeah, so we well, Tommy, Sam, Frankie, I think Serena
- 15:20Speaker 3: and Arthur's family has set out a target of one
- 15:23Speaker 3: thousand pounds. We have at the moments have passed that
- 15:28Speaker 3: to four thousand, five hundred.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Oh wow.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Incredible, absolutely incredible from support from the local people of
- 15:36Speaker 3: New Romney. There's family, friends, even other football clubs. The
- 15:42Speaker 3: boys played a friendly with a club just before the
- 15:46Speaker 3: season ended who donated fifty pounds. The club that I've
- 15:52Speaker 3: recently signed for, over Rangers. Each player donated money and
- 15:57Speaker 3: also money out of their fines pot went into the
- 15:59Speaker 3: charity as well.
- 16:00Speaker 2: That's amazing. Yeah, it's just wonderful that they are. Well,
- 16:04Speaker 2: any sport really, but football, especially for youngsters, can just
- 16:07Speaker 2: kind of bring people together for a common cause, isn't it. Yeah.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Absolutely, Yeah. The conversations we've had prior to this has
- 16:15Speaker 3: been Yeah, it's been great. I think the coverage, like
- 16:18Speaker 3: say from yourselves, even like just discussions at match days
- 16:23Speaker 3: and things like that, it's been really really good.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Right, Okay, so we're halfway through day two. You've just
- 16:27Speaker 2: got through the hardest part of the of the bike ride,
- 16:30Speaker 2: and so you're coming up to Margate but you had
- 16:33Speaker 2: a few issues in Margaie, didn't you.
- 16:35Speaker 4: We certainly did.
- 16:35Speaker 3: We didn't realize that Margate now has quite a few
- 16:38Speaker 3: trendy bars along the front, so we had to navigate
- 16:42Speaker 3: through quite a large amount of people to get up
- 16:46Speaker 3: to Cliftonville itself. I see everyone sees Margate seafront with
- 16:49Speaker 3: the amusements, so it was quite a challenge also to
- 16:53Speaker 3: get on to the top of the right.
- 16:54Speaker 2: And did you did you get much support along the way?
- 16:57Speaker 2: Did the people, you know, just obviously all you were
- 17:00Speaker 2: doing something?
- 17:01Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, Oh, it's fantastic.
- 17:03Speaker 3: I think as we was going through whitstaball going through Westgate,
- 17:09Speaker 3: people that were outside their beach huts clapping.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Four boys, you can do it.
- 17:13Speaker 1: It was.
- 17:14Speaker 3: It really was fantastic and it does at that point
- 17:17Speaker 3: those boys needed a bit of a lift.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, Charlie, Charlie. Was that that bit of recolver
- 17:22Speaker 2: and that that head straight was that was the toughest
- 17:24Speaker 2: part of the three days.
- 17:25Speaker 5: You think it just felt like it was never ending.
- 17:28Speaker 5: We just kept from going and going and going, and
- 17:31Speaker 5: then you had the smell of the seaweed which was
- 17:32Speaker 5: making everyone. But yeah, it was really hard to get
- 17:36Speaker 5: through it. That's just helping each other.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:38Speaker 2: So you're probably about well halfway through the journey then,
- 17:41Speaker 2: and I mean did that kind of get you down?
- 17:44Speaker 2: Did you think? Oh?
- 17:44Speaker 1: No?
- 17:45Speaker 2: But of course the rest of the journey wasn't as
- 17:47Speaker 2: bad as that.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Was it?
- 17:48Speaker 5: No, I mean it started to get a bit downhill
- 17:50Speaker 5: towards like the end of the day. It was just
- 17:53Speaker 5: getting past Margateway that was just yeah, it was.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Hurting, okay from Marv So from Margot I've got you
- 18:00Speaker 2: went around Broadstays Ramsgate. Was that because there was just
- 18:03Speaker 2: a little bit hilly around there Broadstairs. I've done a
- 18:05Speaker 2: couple of bike rides from the Viking boat and.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Yeah, there was a there was a few hills to navigate.
- 18:12Speaker 3: We I think that the worst bit was actually cutting
- 18:14Speaker 3: back onto the main road and then coming off where
- 18:17Speaker 3: the Viking ship is. Yeah, the nature bit was beautiful,
- 18:20Speaker 3: cutting through there the reserve and we passing that's the
- 18:26Speaker 3: way yeah, yeah, really really nice, and then passing Port's
- 18:29Speaker 3: golf course.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Because actually on that very fast piece of road there
- 18:32Speaker 2: there is a cycle track. Isn't that You took that?
- 18:34Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, we took that route and then through into Deal.
- 18:38Speaker 3: I think The worst challenge was getting from the bottom
- 18:42Speaker 3: and going up the hill to the camp site.
- 18:44Speaker 1: I think that was that was the last all. That
- 18:52Speaker 1: must have really been nice for your friend that I
- 18:55Speaker 1: didn't like. The hills.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, there was a few.
- 18:59Speaker 3: There was a few words said as he was cycling
- 19:01Speaker 3: up that I don't think for the radio.
- 19:06Speaker 2: We were Yeah anyway, so you hit deal, so big relief,
- 19:10Speaker 2: I should think. So the second night. Was there still
- 19:13Speaker 2: football and cricket on the second night? Or was it
- 19:16Speaker 2: straight into the sleeping bags?
- 19:17Speaker 5: It was straight? It was just yeah, everyone was hurting, exhausted.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, good. Did you sleep well that night?
- 19:25Speaker 5: No, we were on a hill that you were just
- 19:27Speaker 5: if you got in your slipping down your tent, something
- 19:31Speaker 5: like crawl back up your tent.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Sounds like the other way buncles, isn't it? Okay? So Paul,
- 19:38Speaker 2: we've covered day two, So day three. What was the
- 19:42Speaker 2: morale like when they got up Day three?
- 19:44Speaker 3: Day three was really good. I think everyone was sore,
- 19:48Speaker 3: everyone was hurting. I'd say there was a few tears,
- 19:51Speaker 3: a few blisters from Saturday. But the boys got up.
- 19:55Speaker 3: They knew the challenge that we had. It was shorter.
- 19:58Speaker 3: I'll see the previous day we cycle for ten hours.
- 20:02Speaker 3: So yeah, that stint was the worst. So from the
- 20:06Speaker 3: first day to the middle section of ten hours, that
- 20:10Speaker 3: was tough, really really tough.
- 20:11Speaker 1: I was gonna ask you, you say you cycled during
- 20:15Speaker 1: the day, what sort of hours did you did first?
- 20:17Speaker 1: And then the second He's just said ten hours for
- 20:19Speaker 1: the second day.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Yeah, So the first day was relatively steady.
- 20:24Speaker 4: It was a nice steady pace.
- 20:26Speaker 3: So we set off at about half past nine Friday,
- 20:29Speaker 3: and we think we got to camp probably about four
- 20:31Speaker 3: o'clock so, and then not see the middle day ten
- 20:35Speaker 3: hours cycling was extremely tough for the boys.
- 20:40Speaker 2: But the morale on the third day I was, once
- 20:42Speaker 2: you got going, you realized that was it. You're heading
- 20:45Speaker 2: for home. So Charlie coming, How did it feel once
- 20:48Speaker 2: you got going thinking this is the last day? Or
- 20:51Speaker 2: word was that it kind of lifts you a bit.
- 20:54Speaker 5: I mean, yeah, you had loads of adrenaline and just
- 20:55Speaker 5: knowing that it was just save front some downhill and
- 20:58Speaker 5: when we got just to where you could see like
- 21:01Speaker 5: the promenade where Folks is, yeah, everyone was just like, right,
- 21:04Speaker 5: let's let's push through it now.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Oh okay, Yeah, it was just it was great. So
- 21:09Speaker 2: I saw some pictures of your folks them. Was it
- 21:13Speaker 2: a schedule stop? Did you stop when never drink or
- 21:15Speaker 2: some Yeah?
- 21:16Speaker 5: I think we needed a break and that bit. I
- 21:19Speaker 5: just wanted to get there on time as well. So
- 21:20Speaker 5: it's just cutting down a bit of time. Yeah, having
- 21:23Speaker 5: a little break, drink break.
- 21:25Speaker 2: So when you're coming back, if you've been up to
- 21:27Speaker 2: North Kent and now you're sort of coming the other way,
- 21:31Speaker 2: was was the wind behind you? Because I mean it's
- 21:33Speaker 2: a nice flat stretch from Folkston to New Romney, But
- 21:37Speaker 2: was the wind behind you that that that that way?
- 21:39Speaker 5: It was a bit of fifty to fifty, had some
- 21:40Speaker 5: coming in front, it kept them changing really yeah, but
- 21:44Speaker 5: yeah it was going downhill, so it weren't too bad.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Yeah, right, okay, Paul. So we're coming to the end
- 21:49Speaker 2: of the third day. You're let's say, ten miles from
- 21:54Speaker 2: New Romney. Did the older change a few gears and
- 21:57Speaker 2: let's get it over with or what was that feeling
- 21:59Speaker 2: the last it?
- 22:00Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 22:00Speaker 3: We I think everyone was positive to get back. We
- 22:05Speaker 3: reached so as we come out of Hive there was
- 22:08Speaker 3: a few beeps along the main road there and then
- 22:11Speaker 3: Sam decided to have another puncture, So there was a
- 22:15Speaker 3: bit of a schedule break there. The boys, they were
- 22:18Speaker 3: so excited to get home see family. So yeah, the
- 22:22Speaker 3: giars certainly did sort of go up a bit.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Yeah, good good and Charlie when you came back, and
- 22:28Speaker 2: I've seen the footage of you a lot of turning up.
- 22:31Speaker 2: It's just by the station, there, wasn't it. Yeah, what
- 22:35Speaker 2: was that feeling like? Did you expect anybody to be
- 22:37Speaker 2: there or do you think, oh, that's it, just just
- 22:40Speaker 2: the bike away.
- 22:41Speaker 5: And yeah, there was a lot more people thunexpected, a
- 22:44Speaker 5: very emotional returning. Was it just to see family? It
- 22:47Speaker 5: was nice?
- 22:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:48Speaker 5: And just to know how much we raised when we
- 22:50Speaker 5: got back was really nice.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Yeah, so you got back, I mean, did you find
- 22:57Speaker 2: that the adults are emotional as well?
- 22:59Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 22:59Speaker 4: I think you all.
- 23:01Speaker 3: I think it was quiet for the first few minutes.
- 23:03Speaker 3: It suddenly hit obviously what we had achieved with the boys.
- 23:07Speaker 3: It wasn't easy. It was a lot harder than we thought.
- 23:11Speaker 3: It was nice to get a nice cold beer, I
- 23:12Speaker 3: must say. Captain Howie put on a great, great sort
- 23:16Speaker 3: of celebration for us and the balloons and everything, and
- 23:21Speaker 3: provided everyone with a free drink to welcome us back.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Brilliant.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:27Speaker 2: So so, Charlie, when you'd got back, was it school
- 23:31Speaker 2: the next day?
- 23:33Speaker 5: Yeah? Straight in school the next day. Yeah yeah, which
- 23:37Speaker 5: was painful.
- 23:37Speaker 2: But when when did.
- 23:38Speaker 1: It Sorry, I was just going to say, you went
- 23:40Speaker 1: back to school the next day. How did the school
- 23:44Speaker 1: react to know what you've done?
- 23:47Speaker 5: Well, it was some of my teachers donated onto the
- 23:50Speaker 5: charity and they were just thanking me, some i'm my
- 23:52Speaker 5: mates and just basically saying how well we done.
- 23:57Speaker 2: But yeah, it's.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Nice to get the support from the school as well.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, So when did it really sink in,
- 24:03Speaker 2: Charlie a couple of days later you thought I've done
- 24:05Speaker 2: one hundred and forty seven miles and raised all this
- 24:07Speaker 2: money for charity.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:08Speaker 5: I think it was morely when I got to school
- 24:09Speaker 5: when everyone was saying to me, I'll hit that I've
- 24:11Speaker 5: just done that and helped the charry out a lot.
- 24:14Speaker 2: So brilliant, brilliant. Okay, Paul, come in, Okay, Paul. We've
- 24:18Speaker 2: done most of of the day to day stuff, but
- 24:23Speaker 2: I think it's time now that you had a support
- 24:26Speaker 2: team behind you. But we know you've been name dropping
- 24:29Speaker 2: and we don't want to single anybody out, but I
- 24:32Speaker 2: think you need to just sort of run us through
- 24:34Speaker 2: your support team and basically anyone else that has supported you,
- 24:38Speaker 2: and they all need to need to thank you.
- 24:40Speaker 3: So over to you, oh massively. We had Serena, Faye,
- 24:45Speaker 3: Cassie and Bradley. They supported us from day one. Also
- 24:49Speaker 3: the parents the children were coming supplying drinks and things
- 24:53Speaker 3: like that. We had obviously stop offs that we had,
- 24:57Speaker 3: there was support there, but the support team were fantastic.
- 25:00Speaker 3: Every time the boys needed anything, they were there either
- 25:04Speaker 3: hanging out, giving gels or water or bananas, so many
- 25:09Speaker 3: packets of wine guns. But honestly without that support team, yeah,
- 25:14Speaker 3: gan usd beeping us, keeping us going.
- 25:17Speaker 4: They were absolutely fantastic. They really were, Oh brilliant.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Okay, so is the just giving page to open? Do
- 25:23Speaker 2: you want to you want to quote that if anyone's listening,
- 25:26Speaker 2: Perhaps someone's listening it might be the very first time
- 25:28Speaker 2: they've heard about this. But the charity Young Lies Versus Cancer. Now,
- 25:32Speaker 2: I've spoken about this charity on my show in the
- 25:35Speaker 2: past and we've had several people run the London Marathon
- 25:39Speaker 2: for it.
- 25:39Speaker 4: So it's a.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Shame because we always prefer I mean Adrian Materia that
- 25:45Speaker 2: he is a cancer survivor and it's one of the
- 25:48Speaker 2: toughest things to attack the cancer and come out of
- 25:51Speaker 2: it at the other end. But when it's a young person,
- 25:55Speaker 2: it's just so unfair, isn't it.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Yeah? Absolutely, yeah, I mean yeah, obviously three years ago
- 26:00Speaker 1: I went through it and it was it was awful,
- 26:03Speaker 1: and you know, like support team, like you say, the
- 26:06Speaker 1: Millan Cancer Trust were fantastic for me if I didn't
- 26:11Speaker 1: need to phone them. Still I'm still there for me.
- 26:14Speaker 1: So but I can't even imagine, you know, somebody as
- 26:18Speaker 1: young as the poor person that sadly passed away and
- 26:22Speaker 1: what this was all in maid of. You know, I'm sixty.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I if I had gone, I've had a life. Unfortunately
- 26:29Speaker 1: that person hasn't. And you know, people suffering from cancer.
- 26:33Speaker 1: You know, all these charities really do help, and the
- 26:36Speaker 1: support teams and they need funding from you know, a
- 26:40Speaker 1: lot of places, and your four and a half thousand
- 26:42Speaker 1: pounds plus whatever else you're going to raise now will
- 26:45Speaker 1: go a long way to helping people suffering from cancer.
- 26:48Speaker 1: And it's you know, I take my imaginary hat off
- 26:52Speaker 1: to you and everybody else that does raise cash for
- 26:55Speaker 1: cancer charities.
- 26:56Speaker 3: Absolutely, we're the page is going to probably be open
- 26:59Speaker 3: for another couple of weeks.
- 27:01Speaker 2: How can they get people get hold of it?
- 27:03Speaker 3: So there's a new Romney Youth Facebook page is where
- 27:08Speaker 3: it's all advertised. I know for a fact on Facebook.
- 27:12Speaker 3: The senior team also of advertise it as well. So
- 27:16Speaker 3: it's still not open. We're still looking to race so
- 27:19Speaker 3: much more than four and a half thousand, because we
- 27:21Speaker 3: know what this means and the support this charity gifts.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Every penny counts. If you can give them, please do.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Okay, I think if we play our bicycle song and
- 27:36Speaker 2: then we'll come back and we wrap it up and
- 27:39Speaker 2: we might even get young Alfy over to say a
- 27:41Speaker 2: few words.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Okay, well, as we're doing a bicycle well we do
- 27:49Speaker 1: to have a Queen and bicycle race. Here we go.
- 27:57Speaker 8: I want you now, I want you to ride.
- 28:10Speaker 1: The late Freddie Mercury there and Queen and bicycle race
- 28:13Speaker 1: all the time. From nineteen seventy eight, Charlie was just
- 28:17Speaker 1: telling us off there, it's only been two days ago
- 28:19Speaker 1: since he got back on his bike. Since that and
- 28:23Speaker 1: how did you feel getting back on the bike.
- 28:26Speaker 5: It felt weird just to be on a bike. I'm
- 28:29Speaker 5: not hurting on a bike. I could imagine riding.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that's cool. Well, we've got your little brother coming in.
- 28:37Speaker 1: How are you healthy?
- 28:39Speaker 6: Thank you?
- 28:40Speaker 1: Well done?
- 28:41Speaker 2: Healthy? How old are you healthy?
- 28:42Speaker 6: I'm eight years old?
- 28:43Speaker 5: Hey?
- 28:44Speaker 2: And you played football? Do you?
- 28:45Speaker 1: Who? You played?
- 28:46Speaker 6: Forels?
- 28:47Speaker 1: Do you right?
- 28:48Speaker 2: Because you live over that way there now, don't you?
- 28:50Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 28:50Speaker 2: Oh good? And when you saw your brother doing that,
- 28:55Speaker 2: did you did you feel like you wanted to ever
- 28:57Speaker 2: go or you thought perhaps I'll stay away from more
- 29:00Speaker 2: that viking?
- 29:01Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 29:01Speaker 6: I was just going to let him go through the pain.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, it looks like I reckon. Your dad's got
- 29:07Speaker 2: to find another challenge for for you, lot. I don't
- 29:10Speaker 2: know what it's going to be. We might have a
- 29:11Speaker 2: chat with Paul in a minute. But so as your
- 29:16Speaker 2: football going, are you starting again this season or are
- 29:18Speaker 2: you training now?
- 29:20Speaker 6: I think we're starting soon yep?
- 29:25Speaker 2: And what position do you play?
- 29:26Speaker 6: I play more like a forward.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Forward scoring goals.
- 29:31Speaker 2: I'm in goal like his dad. Well, i'll tell you what.
- 29:35Speaker 2: While we're talking about goalkeepers, Paul, I think it's time
- 29:38Speaker 2: to just to thank you Elfrey.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 29:41Speaker 2: It's just time to I've told this story several times
- 29:45Speaker 2: about the day was in boxing day using goal for Hive.
- 29:50Speaker 4: That's correct.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Yeah, the moment how many years.
- 29:53Speaker 4: Ago was it?
- 29:54Speaker 1: It's that one where he's got a bad back.
- 29:55Speaker 4: That's the one. Yeah, that was the eight meal. I
- 29:59Speaker 4: think you say bit of a drumming.
- 30:00Speaker 3: We got a bit of a lesson, yeah, on boxing
- 30:03Speaker 3: day okay.
- 30:04Speaker 2: And what happened when you got home.
- 30:06Speaker 3: So obviously licking our wounds traveling back home, arrive home
- 30:12Speaker 3: and on my doorstep there was a box of after
- 30:15Speaker 3: eight minutes.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Love it.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Yeah, someone down There's no one ever owned up to
- 30:21Speaker 2: that even didn't they? Okay? And the other thing Paul,
- 30:25Speaker 2: before we go, is that we covered this many many
- 30:29Speaker 2: years ago. But you did a run yourself, didn't you.
- 30:31Speaker 2: And I remember coming down to the Hive Imperial and
- 30:35Speaker 2: just quickly tell us about what was that, what you
- 30:37Speaker 2: did and what was that was all about?
- 30:39Speaker 4: Yeah, that was for McMillan.
- 30:41Speaker 3: We decided to run from Brighton through to Hive, so
- 30:46Speaker 3: we left on a Friday night and arrived Saturday afternoon
- 30:49Speaker 3: at the Imperial.
- 30:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember that coming down. What was your colleagues
- 30:52Speaker 2: name that you ran with, Dan, Dan hille Strip, that's right, Dan, Yeah, Okay,
- 30:56Speaker 2: so we are very seriously running out of time there
- 31:00Speaker 2: as always yeah, so I know we should do like
- 31:02Speaker 2: a four hour show on a Saturday. So, Paul, I mean,
- 31:07Speaker 2: praise has been heaped on you and your boys deservedly so,
- 31:10Speaker 2: and we've said our thank you, So let's wrap it up.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Is there anything else that you really want to say about?
- 31:17Speaker 2: Absolutely anything, anything you might have forgotten earlier on But
- 31:21Speaker 2: to fire away, I.
- 31:22Speaker 4: Think it's really just.
- 31:25Speaker 3: We had a bit of a conversation via tex with
- 31:28Speaker 3: the coaches, and I know the coaches are just ever
- 31:32Speaker 3: so proud of these eight young lads, the task they
- 31:36Speaker 3: took on, the challenge they completed, and the togiveness I
- 31:40Speaker 3: think Charlie touched on, like how they were geeing each
- 31:43Speaker 3: other up, they were ringing their bells, they were trying
- 31:47Speaker 3: to get everyone motivated, and it's an exceptional challenge that
- 31:51Speaker 3: they've done for such young lads to be able to
- 31:55Speaker 3: complete that challenge and to be low on the second day,
- 31:59Speaker 3: but to themselves back up. I think they can take
- 32:01Speaker 3: that into their football over the next coming years.
- 32:04Speaker 1: And memory exactly. I mean you were saying earlier that
- 32:08Speaker 1: they've they've all been together as a team since they
- 32:10Speaker 1: were about five years of age, and you know, all
- 32:13Speaker 1: that togetherness and this has probably helped bond them together
- 32:17Speaker 1: even more.
- 32:17Speaker 2: I reckon they're going to have a great season next week.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Does it changes there? You know, if they can do that,
- 32:23Speaker 2: you know, I remember when I run my very first marathon, thought,
- 32:27Speaker 2: if I can run the marathon, I can run through
- 32:29Speaker 2: that brick walk with It just gives you so much confidence.
- 32:32Speaker 2: So Charlie Big will dones to you. Yeah, any sort
- 32:36Speaker 2: of memories that you know really jump out in your
- 32:40Speaker 2: mind that over those three days. The first thing you
- 32:42Speaker 2: think of.
- 32:44Speaker 5: I think it might be where Franklin into the poll that.
- 32:47Speaker 2: Was great, Well don't heal it? Yeah?
- 32:50Speaker 5: Done very well.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Funny you should say that the next song is going
- 32:52Speaker 1: to be dedicated to him?
- 32:54Speaker 3: Is it.
- 32:57Speaker 4: Okay?
- 32:57Speaker 1: Paul?
- 32:57Speaker 2: So I just want to say thank you for coming in.
- 33:00Speaker 2: It's been a great morning, and we're going to share
- 33:03Speaker 2: this on the podcast for everybody to listen to it
- 33:05Speaker 2: and get some inspiration. If these lads are eight years old,
- 33:10Speaker 2: I'm sorry, fourteen under fourteens can do one hundred and
- 33:14Speaker 2: forty seven miles, then anybody else out there can just
- 33:18Speaker 2: have a go challenge step outside the box and do
- 33:21Speaker 2: something for something else, for another cause, to raise money
- 33:25Speaker 2: and awareness. So that's about it from a ageing anything
- 33:28Speaker 2: else you want to add.
- 33:29Speaker 1: No, no, nothing at all. I mean you've covered everything,
- 33:32Speaker 1: and you know they've If you can give anything else
- 33:35Speaker 1: that they're just give him page and please do and yeah,
- 33:38Speaker 1: hopefully they can raise as much money as possible.
- 33:40Speaker 3: Absolutely, And I say, Kevin, obviously you supported forout any
- 33:44Speaker 3: charities that we've done, so I appreciate you both for
- 33:46Speaker 3: inviting us in today.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Brilliant more than welcome.
- 33:49Speaker 2: So we say goodbye to him individually. So goodbye to you, Paul,
- 33:52Speaker 2: thank you, Goodbye to you, Alphie, good bye, Goodbye to
- 33:55Speaker 2: the hero, Charlie Well and Charlie.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Thank you, and goodbye to money.
- 33:59Speaker 2: In the background, Yeah, of course I'm very quiet. Yeah, yeah,
- 34:01Speaker 2: she's what you don't come out on the radio, but.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Usually not very good on the radio. Okay, as I say,
- 34:09Speaker 1: thank you very much guys for coming in. And this
- 34:10Speaker 1: one goes to your friend Hilbert Hilbert, and this one's
- 34:14Speaker 1: by that crash test dummies and this is called.
- 34:18Speaker 4: Um what.
- 34:30Speaker 1: I was as cute guardian. There you go, um um
- 34:40Speaker 1: um crush test dummies. That's for you, Hilbert. Hilbert, just
- 34:45Speaker 1: think that's start of the one. I couldn't think of
- 34:47Speaker 1: anything else with crashing it. So right, well, yeah, I
- 34:51Speaker 1: mean we've onready got less than ten minutes left. But yeah,
- 34:54Speaker 1: it was fantastically hearing them and they're hearing their stories.
- 34:57Speaker 2: And Charlie was a good speaker, wasn't he fantastic?
- 35:00Speaker 1: I mean, you know for someone as younger Zi, Yeah, yeah,
- 35:03Speaker 1: to a duck to water. Yeah yeah, really really good.
- 35:06Speaker 2: Right, So we haven't got much time left. So what
- 35:08Speaker 2: we're going to talk about now? I think we should
- 35:10Speaker 2: mention the fact that you went to up North last week,
- 35:14Speaker 2: so tell us about that.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Yeah, A bit of a strange preseason friendly as far
- 35:18Speaker 1: as preseason friendlies go. We were playing Bradford Park Avenue,
- 35:22Speaker 1: former Football League club from the fifties excuse me forties fifties.
- 35:26Speaker 1: They're famous for one reason, going from the First Division
- 35:30Speaker 1: to the fourth division seasons. They've not had a very
- 35:33Speaker 1: good time since they were voted out of the league
- 35:36Speaker 1: in nineteen seventy by Cambridge United. They struggled in non
- 35:42Speaker 1: league terms and they actually started off as a had
- 35:45Speaker 1: to restart as a Sunday Morning team and then they
- 35:48Speaker 1: finally rose through the ranks and the last few seasons
- 35:52Speaker 1: they've not had very good time, so they're just beginning
- 35:55Speaker 1: to get themselves back onto a level playing field. But
- 35:59Speaker 1: the reason why we went up to Bradford our new manager,
- 36:02Speaker 1: Jay Saunders. He's a advocate of bringing the team together
- 36:05Speaker 1: and then he wanted a bonding sort of session. So
- 36:08Speaker 1: hence I think Josh Eely's got some sort of ties
- 36:13Speaker 1: up in New Yorkshire. So that's obviously where the players went.
- 36:16Speaker 1: And yeah, they played played last Saturday and played really
- 36:22Speaker 1: well with good team performance.
- 36:24Speaker 2: I mean, if you like the football standard was it
- 36:27Speaker 2: was it on a par.
- 36:30Speaker 1: I would definitely say we never looked like losing. Yeah,
- 36:34Speaker 1: we were defensively, I thought we were brilliant. We never
- 36:38Speaker 1: looked like conceded a goal. Not too sure about the
- 36:42Speaker 1: two trialist goalkeepers we've got, but they didn't have a
- 36:46Speaker 1: lot to do so it's very difficult to say. But
- 36:48Speaker 1: when they played against ash Ford, the trialist goalkeeper was
- 36:51Speaker 1: not great. He considered a semi Hasler free kick and
- 36:56Speaker 1: considered a penalty when he really didn't need to. But
- 37:00Speaker 1: you know that's just the one off. Maybe but yeah,
- 37:03Speaker 1: I mean going back to the Saturday game, good all
- 37:07Speaker 1: round team performance. I think the manager will be very
- 37:10Speaker 1: very happy with the runout. Everybody seemed to put in
- 37:13Speaker 1: the shift and we had two trialists who have since
- 37:17Speaker 1: signed for the club. I can't remember his first name.
- 37:23Speaker 1: I can't remember, Yeah, but trilis eleven. He had two
- 37:31Speaker 1: one on ones with the goalkeeper and put it wide
- 37:33Speaker 1: of the goal, same place twice. It was other than that,
- 37:38Speaker 1: he was he looks a good acquisition.
- 37:40Speaker 2: She'll be saying there today, what's going on today?
- 37:43Speaker 1: Today? We traveled up to Tunbridge for Jay Saunders, the manager.
- 37:47Speaker 1: That's that's the team he managed before Folks and in
- 37:50Speaker 1: Victor and according to their forum, it's gonna could be
- 37:54Speaker 1: a bit lively on the dugout, so it will be
- 37:59Speaker 1: a very tough chart of justice. They do. They're in
- 38:03Speaker 1: the National League South, focusing the Victor in the Isthmian
- 38:06Speaker 1: Premier League, hoping to try and get out of that
- 38:08Speaker 1: league this season. And yeah, it's going to be a tough,
- 38:13Speaker 1: tough game. I think now that the trialists, I think
- 38:16Speaker 1: he's weeded what he wants. He's now got basis of
- 38:19Speaker 1: a good team and I think it's now just getting
- 38:21Speaker 1: to know each other and what his best starting eleven
- 38:24Speaker 1: is for the first game against Jichitter City in a
- 38:27Speaker 1: few weeks time.
- 38:27Speaker 2: Of course, the other talking point is the artificial pitch.
- 38:31Speaker 1: So yes, well, work has finally started. I went over
- 38:36Speaker 1: there a couple of days ago and took some more
- 38:39Speaker 1: photos and it's beginning to be leveled out now. I
- 38:42Speaker 1: think all the top soil and all the grass has gone.
- 38:46Speaker 1: I don't quite know the logistics of everything on how
- 38:49Speaker 1: it's going to be done, but yeah, it's well, it
- 38:54Speaker 1: just looks like at the moment before. Yeah, they've got
- 38:58Speaker 1: to get all the foundations and everything right. And then
- 39:01Speaker 1: I think it's Velocity. I think that's the name of
- 39:03Speaker 1: the it is.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Actually, well I didn't know that, but but I remember
- 39:07Speaker 2: doing a special on the Velocity because Velocity used to
- 39:12Speaker 2: sponsor I think it was a Kent Senior Cup, and
- 39:16Speaker 2: I thought, who are these sponsors?
- 39:17Speaker 1: What do they do?
- 39:18Speaker 2: And then I immediately found out that they install artificialities
- 39:22Speaker 2: and they've been doing it a long time.
- 39:24Speaker 1: Think they are the creme de la creme of the
- 39:27Speaker 1: artificial I mean, I don't know if we've employed that.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Folks in Victor have got them to do it, but
- 39:32Speaker 1: I'm just banding that name out. Velocity are the sponsors
- 39:36Speaker 1: of the Velocity League Cup that folks in Victor will
- 39:39Speaker 1: be in this season. So yeah, But anyway, the.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Law news because sort of a side issue on this
- 39:45Speaker 2: three G or artificial? Is that a ground sharing? I
- 39:49Speaker 2: understand they're going to ground share. What's that all about.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Yeah, well, obviously if there was a delay in the
- 39:54Speaker 1: pitch being done, so that's now put them back. I
- 39:59Speaker 1: believe we've been given a day of October. I don't
- 40:03Speaker 1: know if it's beginning or end. These pitches obviously they
- 40:07Speaker 1: take time to lay. Yeah, we have to ground share
- 40:11Speaker 1: with somebody. Obviously we've got the FA Cup early qualifying
- 40:15Speaker 1: rounds as well, so you have to inform the FA
- 40:19Speaker 1: of where you're likely to be playing your game. So
- 40:22Speaker 1: it's all that to be worked out that we are
- 40:23Speaker 1: ground sharing. Unfortunately, Hive and Ashford's I don't think come
- 40:28Speaker 1: up to the standard for the Isabian Premier League on
- 40:31Speaker 1: a grade in So I don't know the ins and outs,
- 40:34Speaker 1: but it's been worked out with the folks and Victor
- 40:38Speaker 1: board that they are going to be playing their home
- 40:40Speaker 1: games at Heartsdowne Park in Maidstone, Sorry not Mainsteon Margate.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Don't go to Maidstone now the people playing that Margate,
- 40:51Speaker 1: I mean it could be two or three games, it
- 40:53Speaker 1: could be five or six.
- 40:55Speaker 2: They artificial, they are they are.
- 40:57Speaker 1: Artificial pitch there.
- 40:58Speaker 4: Ye.
- 40:58Speaker 1: I'm not sure if anybody actually shares with them, but
- 41:00Speaker 1: I know they've got like the academy teams and everything.
- 41:03Speaker 1: And obviously all our games probably won't be on a
- 41:06Speaker 1: Saturday at three o'clock, but you just have to watch
- 41:09Speaker 1: look out on social media to see what times they
- 41:11Speaker 1: are kicking off. And I believe there will be transport
- 41:14Speaker 1: going to the games. I think it's going to be
- 41:16Speaker 1: free for the season ticket holders, and if the coach
- 41:21Speaker 1: isn't a full up, then obviously paying customers will be
- 41:24Speaker 1: able to go.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Right. So it's all happening, and it sounds like, well,
- 41:29Speaker 2: an exciting start to the season in one way or
- 41:31Speaker 2: another down in Folks, in a victor after a few
- 41:35Speaker 2: trials and tribulations from last year and in sort of
- 41:38Speaker 2: off peaks for the season.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, looking at the preseason games I've been too,
- 41:42Speaker 1: so far the squad's coming together nicely. Yeah, I will
- 41:45Speaker 1: say that it's obviously you can't do it overnight. But
- 41:51Speaker 1: what I've seen I've been quite impressed with. Yeah, good, good, right,
- 41:55Speaker 1: new kits as well, new kids. Yeah, we're wearing a
- 41:59Speaker 1: blue Away Sky Blue Awake it and it's it's really
- 42:02Speaker 1: actually quite nice.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah good. Yeah.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Well we got just ten minutes minute after game we.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Talk we players, so I've only got one minute twenty.
- 42:12Speaker 1: Yeah, well we'll rab it on the until deep.
- 42:14Speaker 2: I just want to just whip through today's cricket fixtures
- 42:16Speaker 2: in case you're thinking of going out. The Folkston are
- 42:19Speaker 2: at home to Leeds and Broomfield top of the table.
- 42:22Speaker 2: Hawkings are a way to bet saying a Colliery Hive
- 42:25Speaker 2: cricket club or fifth in the same division are away
- 42:28Speaker 2: to Willsborough and there's a local derby. Division nine Shepherd
- 42:33Speaker 2: Section eighth place sal Wood are at home to Hyde
- 42:36Speaker 2: Green who are fifth and finally in Division five Hurricane
- 42:38Speaker 2: Section fifth place. Siptom Park are a way too often,
- 42:42Speaker 2: who are eighth, which means a trip to a West Mauling.
- 42:45Speaker 1: That'd be nice afternoon a cricket sunshiny.
- 42:48Speaker 2: Yeah, the weather dose are too bad, so you just
- 42:51Speaker 2: can't tell that, you know, it's this weather, it's English weather,
- 42:54Speaker 2: and I'm a bit sand to see. Actually in Cyprus,
- 42:56Speaker 2: there's a lot of fires out there, which is happening
- 42:59Speaker 2: in a lot of trop coolence because I checked the
- 43:03Speaker 2: temperatures at Pathos and it was like thirty two degrees
- 43:08Speaker 2: feels like forty four degrees. Yeah, so you can understand.
- 43:12Speaker 2: So okay, that's it for me. I'll be back on Thursday.
- 43:16Speaker 1: Tune into Cavery on Thursday and we'll both be back
- 43:18Speaker 1: next Saturday. I'm not sure we've got any guests in
- 43:21Speaker 1: and show.
- 43:21Speaker 2: We'll be working on it.
- 43:22Speaker 1: We're working on it. Okay, thank you very much for
- 43:24Speaker 1: tuning in, and we will see you all again next Saturday.
- 43:28Speaker 1: By bye, right,
