Charles Gaines, the visionary writer who brought bodybuilding to the world stage through his iconic book and documentary “Pumping Iron,” passed away at 84. Beyond launching Arnold Schwarzenegger’s career, Gaines penned the novel “Stay Hungry,” filmed in his hometown of Birmingham, and earned two Emmys, two Cine Golden Eagles, and a Lifetime Achievement Award for co-inventing paintball.
