- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:08This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14In our current series, Fruitful Work, we're asking
- 0:16the question, what kind of fruit am I
- 0:18bearing at work?
- 0:19Because if we're honest, we don't always bear
- 0:21the kind of fruit we wish we would.
- 0:23But by God's grace, by the power of
- 0:24the Holy Spirit, we can bear fruit that
- 0:26is good.
- 0:28We've been working backwards through the Apostle Paul's
- 0:31list of the parts of the fruit of
- 0:33the fruit, so we did goodness in our
- 0:36last episode, and that brings us back to
- 0:37kindness in this episode.
- 0:43I want to start with a story.
- 0:45Back in 2019, a photo went viral on
- 0:48social media of two second-grade students in
- 0:51Maniha Elementary School in Wichita, Kansas.
- 0:54It was from the first day of school
- 0:55in late August, and one of these students,
- 0:58whose name was Connor, was crying, and the
- 1:02other student, whose name was Christian, was standing
- 1:03next to him holding his hand.
- 1:07The story behind the photo is that Connor
- 1:09has autism, and it was the first day
- 1:12of second grade.
- 1:13It was overwhelming.
- 1:15As you know, people with autism sometimes struggle
- 1:18with transition and new things that can be
- 1:19hard when there aren't routines yet, and so
- 1:22he just started crying, and Christian saw him
- 1:25and just made a beeline for him and
- 1:26held his hand, and then walked him into
- 1:28the school holding his hand.
- 1:31And Connor says, he was kind to me.
- 1:35I was in the first day of school,
- 1:36and I started crying, and then he helped
- 1:39me, and I was happy.
- 1:42He found me and held my hand, and
- 1:44I got happy tears.
- 1:48Kindness makes such a difference, and we all
- 1:51know this by experience.
- 1:53We know that when someone is truly kind
- 1:55to us, how deeply it can touch our
- 1:58heart, and how we long to be able
- 2:00to be kind to other people in that
- 2:02way.
- 2:05If we've had much experience with human relationships,
- 2:08we know there's a big difference between kind
- 2:09and just being nice.
- 2:12Being nice can mean being polite, but it's
- 2:15often just a way of avoiding conflict, of
- 2:17saying positive things, even if they're untrue or
- 2:20we don't believe them.
- 2:21It's a way of promoting superficial social harmony.
- 2:26But that kind of niceness can really just
- 2:29be a mask, where you're friendly with what
- 2:31you say, you're friendly with your facial expression,
- 2:34but inside you may actually still hold the
- 2:37other person in contempt.
- 2:38You may feel superior towards them.
- 2:40You may actually even hate them.
- 2:43Kindness is totally different than that.
- 2:46As we've been talking about in the fruit
- 2:47of the spirit, the spirit works in our
- 2:49heart, and then our words and our actions
- 2:52demonstrate what's in our heart.
- 2:54So the kind of kindness that the spirit
- 2:56produces starts in the heart.
- 3:01Just like with gentleness, we talked about that
- 3:03as a tender response to the weaknesses of
- 3:06someone else.
- 3:07We can think of kindness as a tender
- 3:09concern for someone else's well-being.
- 3:14And so it really depends on what you
- 3:15think about that person.
- 3:17Are they truly precious to you?
- 3:20Do you see them as someone who is
- 3:22precious in the sight of God?
- 3:25If you really believe that in your heart,
- 3:27that will flow out of you in the
- 3:29way that you interact with them.
- 3:33Another way of understanding kindness in this specific
- 3:35passage in Galatians is related to patience.
- 3:38So our next episode is going to be
- 3:39about patience.
- 3:41Paul lists them right next to each other.
- 3:42Patience, kindness.
- 3:44And they're kind of like the Bonnie and
- 3:45Clyde, partners in crime in the fruit of
- 3:48the spirit, because you can't really have patience
- 3:51without kindness.
- 3:52They always seem to be buddies, to pair
- 3:54up with each other.
- 3:56Paul mentions them again, actually, three other times
- 3:59in the New Testament.
- 4:01So two of those times are in other
- 4:02virtue lists, just like his Galatians 5, fruit
- 4:05of the spirit, is a kind of virtue
- 4:07list that he's putting within the theology of
- 4:09grace and the theology of the Holy Spirit.
- 4:12He has other virtue lists and other letters
- 4:14that he writes.
- 4:15So in his letter to the Colossians, chapter
- 4:173, verse 12, he says, Clothe yourselves with
- 4:19compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
- 4:23So there again, you see kindness and patience,
- 4:25just a few words apart from each other.
- 4:27In 2 Corinthians, Paul does the same thing
- 4:29again with a kind of virtue list.
- 4:30This is chapter 6, verses 4 through 6.
- 4:33He says, As servants of God, we commend
- 4:35ourselves in every way, in purity, understanding, patience,
- 4:39and kindness, in the Holy Spirit, and in
- 4:41sincere love.
- 4:43So multiple times, when Paul's just deciding to
- 4:46rattle off some Christian virtues, rattle off what
- 4:49the Holy Spirit does in our lives, he
- 4:50switches it up.
- 4:51He doesn't always say the same words.
- 4:53But whenever he says patience, he also says
- 4:55kindness.
- 4:55Whenever he says kindness, he also says patience.
- 4:58They're meant to go together.
- 4:59And this is intuitive for us, right?
- 5:01Can you imagine somebody who's always impatient with
- 5:03other people, but who's really kind?
- 5:05No, you can't even imagine that, right?
- 5:07To be kind to people, you have to
- 5:12be patient with their flaws and their foibles.
- 5:16That's just part of how it works.
- 5:17That's part of what genuine, tender concern for
- 5:19other human beings means.
- 5:21Because other human beings do have flaws, they
- 5:23do have foibles, they do have things that
- 5:25we need to be patient with.
- 5:28One thing that we've been talking about is
- 5:30how the fruit of the Spirit comes about
- 5:31from interacting with the Holy Spirit.
- 5:34And so one question that I have is
- 5:36how can we actually interact with the Holy
- 5:39Spirit during the work day in a way
- 5:42that produces kindness?
- 5:44And so I was thinking about, OK, what
- 5:46are ways we could frame this?
- 5:48And the thing that came to mind was
- 5:49American Ninja Warrior.
- 5:52I don't know if you've ever seen that
- 5:52show or seen it on YouTube.
- 5:54It's just like a really complex obstacle course.
- 5:57And it's really fun to watch people doing
- 5:58their runs, trying not to fall off of
- 6:01the obstacle course, trying to reach the goal
- 6:03in the shortest amount of time while executing
- 6:05all of the different obstacles, whether it's jumping
- 6:08or leaping or crouching or climbing a rope
- 6:10or whatever it might be.
- 6:12Well, we could think about our work day
- 6:14as an obstacle course.
- 6:17Now, one way we might think about our
- 6:18work day as an obstacle course is just
- 6:19the stuff we've got to get done.
- 6:20We got all our to-do lists.
- 6:22Maybe use a task manager like I do.
- 6:24I use one called Asana.
- 6:25There's others Trello, Monday.com, whatever.
- 6:27Just a piece of paper with a checklist
- 6:29on it.
- 6:29You've got your list and you're like, I
- 6:31just got to get through all of these
- 6:32obstacles today to make it to the end
- 6:34of the day.
- 6:35But when we think about interacting with the
- 6:37Holy Spirit as it relates to kindness, we
- 6:40think about the obstacle course differently.
- 6:42Yes, we have that obstacle course of the
- 6:44things we need to get done to do
- 6:45our job well.
- 6:47But we also have the challenge of can
- 6:49I do all those things while being kind
- 6:52to every single person I interact with today?
- 6:57Every time I send an email, every time
- 7:00I send a message, every time I leave
- 7:02a comment in the project management software, every
- 7:05time I answer a phone call or say
- 7:08hi to somebody at the office or next
- 7:10to me on the factory line, can I
- 7:14be kind in the way that I interact
- 7:16with them?
- 7:18So when we think about what does it
- 7:19mean to win at that obstacle course, the
- 7:22obstacle course is not just about getting things
- 7:24done.
- 7:24It's about how we treat people as we
- 7:27get things done.
- 7:28If I got to the end of the
- 7:28day and I reflect back on my day
- 7:30and I think about how I interacted with
- 7:32other people and I was faithfully doing my
- 7:34work again, that's the fruit of the spirit,
- 7:36part of the fruit of the spirit, which
- 7:37is faithfulness, I'm faithfully doing the things entrusted
- 7:39to me, but I also did them where
- 7:41I had tender concern for the well-being
- 7:44of all the people around me.
- 7:46That's winning.
- 7:46That's making it to the end of the
- 7:47obstacle course.
- 7:49And so where's the Holy Spirit?
- 7:50Well, this isn't a perfect analogy, but I
- 7:52think the Holy Spirit is like our coach,
- 7:54right?
- 7:55Obviously, it's more intimate than that because the
- 7:56Holy Spirit is like the breath in our
- 7:57lungs and the blood in our veins and
- 7:59the Holy Spirit is inside of us.
- 8:00But the Holy Spirit is also our coach.
- 8:01The Holy Spirit is a guide.
- 8:03The Holy Spirit instructs us.
- 8:05And so as we're going through all those
- 8:06obstacle course challenges of the day where it's
- 8:08really tempting not to be kind to people
- 8:10because we're stressed or because they're mean or
- 8:12whatever it may be, the Holy Spirit is
- 8:14coaching us.
- 8:15The Holy Spirit is whispering in our ears,
- 8:16like, move to the left, go to the
- 8:17right, go for it, reminding us to be
- 8:20kind.
- 8:21So how do we interact with our coach?
- 8:23How do we keep our ears open to
- 8:25what our coach is doing?
- 8:26Well, one way is simply to be in
- 8:28conversation with our coach, to be in prayer
- 8:30and conversation with the Holy Spirit during the
- 8:33day.
- 8:34So one way you can do this is
- 8:35just send little prayers up.
- 8:37One leader who I know called these arrow
- 8:38prayers, just shoot up little arrows to God,
- 8:40half second prayers when you're interacting with other
- 8:42people.
- 8:43So maybe you're having a conversation with someone,
- 8:45you're listening to them.
- 8:46But then in your heart, you just pray,
- 8:47God bless Margo.
- 8:49God bless Johnny.
- 8:50Or you just pray little arrow prayer for
- 8:53the person even while you're interacting with them.
- 8:55And that cues you in to be sensitive
- 8:57to what the Holy Spirit might be doing
- 8:58in that moment.
- 8:59It opens your ears to the instruction of
- 9:02your coach.
- 9:03Another way is you can pray for yourself,
- 9:05right?
- 9:05So if you're typing that email and you
- 9:06realize you're getting into that angsty email typing
- 9:09mode where you're like, as per my previous
- 9:11email, dot, dot, dot, you can stop and
- 9:15you can pray for yourself.
- 9:16You can pray, Holy Spirit, give me your
- 9:20tender concern for this person right now.
- 9:24Can you give me your tender concern for
- 9:26this coworker, for this vendor, for this client?
- 9:29I want to write this email again with
- 9:31whatever kind of clarity I need with doing
- 9:35my job, the way my job needs to
- 9:36be done, but also with genuine kindness for
- 9:39everyone involved.
- 9:42So that's one way that we let the
- 9:44Holy Spirit coach us is just prayer conversation
- 9:46with the Holy Spirit during the work day.
- 9:49Another thing, though, is when we think about
- 9:50kindness, again, kindness is expressed in our words
- 9:53and our actions.
- 9:54Our words and actions demonstrate what's in our
- 9:56heart.
- 9:58We can actually plan on being kind.
- 10:01So I just mentioned task planners.
- 10:04Have you considered actually putting little kindness reminders
- 10:07in your task planner?
- 10:09Like, if you have a task planner that
- 10:10reminds you to do something every day at
- 10:12noon, could you put something in there just
- 10:14like, oh, send an encouraging note to somebody?
- 10:16And then just, you know, when it shows
- 10:18up, you're like, oh, okay, I can take
- 10:19five minutes now and send an encouraging note
- 10:21to somebody.
- 10:22Again, we want to get to a point
- 10:23where the habit is automatic, where the Holy
- 10:25Spirit has borne his fruit in our hearts,
- 10:27so that we're just without even thinking about
- 10:29it, sending encouraging notes and being kind in
- 10:32our interactions with everybody.
- 10:33But while we're still, you know, have the
- 10:35training wheels on, we're still trying to form
- 10:36that habit because we're early in our walk
- 10:38with Jesus.
- 10:39We need reminders.
- 10:41And so we can just use conscious reminders,
- 10:43stick it in your task planner, and in
- 10:45practical ways that you can choose to be
- 10:47kind to others.
- 10:51Then finally, another way to let the Holy
- 10:53Spirit coach you is to identify your cues.
- 10:56So this is kind of coming from the
- 10:58science of habits, where you have a cue
- 11:00and then a routine, and then a reward.
- 11:03The journalist Charles Duhigg popularized this idea as
- 11:05the habit cycle in his book, The Power
- 11:07of Habit.
- 11:08But it's helpful, that idea that, oh, we
- 11:10have these automatic bodily responses.
- 11:13Sometimes they're good, sometimes they're bad, right?
- 11:15Works of the flesh are the bad ones
- 11:16that are embedded in our bodies, apart from
- 11:18the work of grace, the work of the
- 11:19Holy Spirit.
- 11:20But there's a cue that will kick it
- 11:21off, right?
- 11:22So your phone rings that cues you to
- 11:25do something.
- 11:27So you need to identify your cues.
- 11:29Where is there a habit loop that's happening
- 11:31for you in your workplace, where you could
- 11:34increase the kindness you're demonstrating to other people?
- 11:39Let me just use an example from my
- 11:40own life.
- 11:40It is literally the phone ringing.
- 11:42One of my duties at my job at
- 11:43the food bank is answering the phone.
- 11:45And I'm the kind of person where if
- 11:46I'm writing an email and the phone rings,
- 11:48I like keep writing the email.
- 11:50I let the phone ring a little bit
- 11:51because I just want to finish the sentence.
- 11:52I just want to finish the thought.
- 11:53I don't want my stream of conscious thought
- 11:55to be interrupted.
- 11:57But I've really been convicted about this, because
- 11:58what happens is the phone's ringing.
- 12:00I'm finishing my sentence.
- 12:02The phone's ringing.
- 12:03I'm finishing my sentence.
- 12:04And then I grab the phone before it
- 12:05finishes ringing.
- 12:06And I'm like, Hello, this is Northern Illinois
- 12:08Food Bank.
- 12:08How may I help you?
- 12:09And I'm like, I'm rushed.
- 12:11I'm not fully present.
- 12:12I'm distracted.
- 12:13I'm still thinking about the email.
- 12:15I'm just sort of saying the words in
- 12:16a rote way.
- 12:17I realized what I need to do is
- 12:19start training myself the minute that phone rings
- 12:21to stop what I'm doing, pivot my attention,
- 12:24pivot my emotional energy, and then answer the
- 12:27phone with my full and undivided attention on
- 12:30the voice at the other end of the
- 12:32line.
- 12:33Hello, this is Northern Illinois Food Bank.
- 12:35How can I help you?
- 12:37And that's still hard for me, right?
- 12:39I am annoyed when the phone rings.
- 12:41I'm like, dang it.
- 12:42I'm supposed to, I'm going to forget what
- 12:43I'm, you know, like, like I'm not there
- 12:45yet.
- 12:46But this is something that I can do.
- 12:48I can identify the cue.
- 12:49Okay, the phone rings.
- 12:50That's a cue.
- 12:51That's a Holy Spirit coach training moment in
- 12:53my life.
- 12:54Let me figure out how to start adding
- 12:56kindness into the mix there.
- 12:58So for you, identify what the cue is.
- 13:00Is it when your kids interrupt you because
- 13:01you're working at home?
- 13:02Is it when the person next to you
- 13:04at the store always starts complaining about your
- 13:06boss, the minute the boss leaves?
- 13:08Is it when you've got your client sending
- 13:10an email with, with just like completely unreasonable
- 13:13requests?
- 13:14Whatever it is, identify your cue.
- 13:17And then how can you welcome the voice
- 13:19of the Holy Spirit?
- 13:19How can you welcome just a little bit
- 13:21more of Christlike kindness in those interactions?
- 13:25Okay, so those are the ways that we
- 13:27can let the Holy Spirit coach us.
- 13:28We can be in conversation and prayer with
- 13:30the Holy Spirit.
- 13:31We can put it into our task planners.
- 13:33We can choose the specific ways to practice
- 13:35being kind.
- 13:37And we can identify our cues and welcome
- 13:39the Holy Spirit's input as we form new
- 13:40habits.
- 13:42Earlier, I mentioned that there were three other
- 13:44places in the New Testament where Paul puts
- 13:46kindness and patience together.
- 13:49And I only mentioned two of them, the
- 13:50virtuous.
- 13:51The third place, he's actually not talking about
- 13:54us.
- 13:55He's talking about God.
- 13:57This is in Romans chapter two, verse four.
- 14:00Paul writes about the riches of his kindness,
- 14:03forbearance, and patience.
- 14:06And then he talks about how God's kindness
- 14:07is intended to lead you to repentance.
- 14:12God is kind to us.
- 14:15God has tender concern for us.
- 14:19And as always, the place where we see
- 14:20this character of God most brightly demonstrated is
- 14:24in the work of Jesus Christ, in his
- 14:25life, in his death, in his resurrection.
- 14:29And that's something we can meditate on as
- 14:32we continue to grow in kindness is how
- 14:35God has been kind to us.
- 14:38And sometimes meditating in a very literal sense,
- 14:41pondering Jesus's life, pondering his death, thinking about
- 14:45it, reading those gospel passages where Jesus is
- 14:48on the cross and seeing how he's kind
- 14:50to the people around him, even in that
- 14:52moment.
- 14:54A 14th and 15th century mystic of the
- 14:57Christian tradition, Julian of Norwich, wrote about this.
- 15:01This is from her book, Revelations of Divine
- 15:04Love.
- 15:06And she writes about this kind of prayer
- 15:08and meditation on how patient God is towards
- 15:11us, how kind he is toward us.
- 15:15We pray to God by his holy flesh,
- 15:17and by his precious blood, his holy passion,
- 15:20his glorious death and wounds, and all the
- 15:23blessed kindness, the unending life that we have
- 15:27from these is from his goodness.
- 15:32Maybe some archaic language, not the way we're
- 15:34used to talking about meditating on Jesus's death
- 15:37and resurrection.
- 15:38But I think it's actually really significant.
- 15:40Julian was writing this in English, you know,
- 15:42this is a kind of contemporary version of
- 15:44it, but same language.
- 15:45And she uses this word by, which is
- 15:47really significant.
- 15:48She says we pray to God by his
- 15:51holy flesh, that is Jesus's holy flesh, and
- 15:53by his precious blood, his holy passion.
- 15:58What does it mean to pray to God
- 15:59by Jesus's death?
- 16:03Well, I think there's a couple of meanings
- 16:03there.
- 16:04One is that it's by virtue of, because
- 16:06of, it's because of Jesus's death and resurrection
- 16:08that we can pray to God in union
- 16:09with Christ and the Holy Spirit.
- 16:12The fullness of the Trinitarian life that we're
- 16:14invited into is because of Jesus's sacrifice on
- 16:17the cross.
- 16:19Paul puts it this way in Ephesians 2
- 16:20.18, through Jesus, we have access to the
- 16:23Father by one Spirit.
- 16:25He's talking about Jesus's death there.
- 16:27That's one of those Trinitarian verses.
- 16:29Through Jesus, we have access to the Father
- 16:31by one Spirit.
- 16:35So that's one thing, is that to pray
- 16:36by Jesus's death, to pray by his passion,
- 16:40is simply to pray because of his passion,
- 16:42to remember that we can approach God in
- 16:44prayer, in union with God, Father, Son, and
- 16:47Holy Spirit, because of Jesus's death and resurrection.
- 16:50But there's another way, which is by meditating
- 16:53on Jesus's passion and death and prayer, we
- 16:56come to know God's kindness and goodness towards
- 16:59us more deeply.
- 17:01When we turn our mind to the image
- 17:03of Christ on the cross, we see God's
- 17:07kindness.
- 17:09We see it more clearly there than we
- 17:10could see it anywhere else.
- 17:12And this is why Julian writes of his
- 17:14blessed kindness, the unending life that we have,
- 17:18which is from his goodness.
- 17:21We see God's character for us, his kindness
- 17:23towards us when we ponder the death and
- 17:26resurrection of Jesus.
- 17:28And that's again, one of those off the
- 17:30spot training exercises.
- 17:32You don't necessarily have time in the middle
- 17:33of your workday to deeply meditate on the
- 17:36crucifixion of Jesus.
- 17:37But you do have time after the workday,
- 17:41before the workday on your lunch break, to
- 17:43crack open your Bible and just remember, Jesus
- 17:46died for me.
- 17:48God's kindness is here for me.
- 17:52And that kindness is meant to lead you
- 17:53to repentance, to lead you to turning your
- 17:55life all the way toward God, including in
- 17:59how you are kind, how you have a
- 18:00tender concern for everyone around you.
- 18:06Lord Jesus, you are the ultimate kind one.
- 18:10You show us what kindness really means.
- 18:13Teach us to receive your tender concern, your
- 18:16father's tender concern.
- 18:18And let us welcome the Holy Spirit as
- 18:21he builds that tender concern in our own
- 18:24hearts, as we love the people around us
- 18:26at work and everywhere else.
- 18:29Jesus do your work in us as we
- 18:31do our work with you.
- 18:39Thanks for listening.
