- 0:00Adam: Hello and welcome to the Adam and Deidra show.
- 0:03Adam: We got a really cool episode, but first we're gonna kick it off with this sour called Lunchbox Legend.
- 0:10Adam: It's a peanut butter and jelly inspired gluten-free sour ale.
- 0:13Adam: I don't know why they have to specify the gluten-free so much, but but it's from uh Moore Brewing Company out of uh Illinois.
- 0:21Adam: So we've had this uh before in the can, and we had it just this past week on draft.
- 0:29Adam: And just look at it, it's a sour, it's kind of light in uh the way that it looks.
- 0:35Adam: It's not like the typical sour smoothie sour that you go for.
- 0:39Dedra: Right.
- 0:40Adam: But the flavor, in my opinion, is it kind of goes um look at that color, surprise you a little bit.
- 0:47Adam: Yeah, it's a very nice red, it's not too cloudy.
- 0:50Adam: You can almost see through it still.
- 0:51Adam: You can even see the effervescence with your light there.
- 0:54Dedra: Yeah.
- 0:55Adam: Yeah.
- 0:55Adam: So it's but the flavor, I feel like, is outside the realm of what it looks like.
- 1:01Adam: Um I mean, I guess that's the best way to describe it, but uh, I'm looking forward to it.
- 1:05Adam: My mouth's watering alright.
- 1:06Adam: So cheers.
- 1:07Dedra: You had a lot of words for your mouth to be watering.
- 1:10Adam: Well, I was just thinking about the flavor.
- 1:11Adam: Oh yeah, that's good.
- 1:12Adam: No, I've we've had some peanut butter and jelly beers.
- 1:16Adam: We actually had one, wasn't it called like uncrustable or something like that?
- 1:20Dedra: Yes, something very much.
- 1:22Dedra: And I actually thought that's what this one was.
- 1:25Dedra: Because like that first smell is just like strawberry jelly and peanut butter.
- 1:30Dedra: Yeah.
- 1:31Dedra: Um, a strawberry and jelly peanut butter sandwich.
- 1:34Dedra: You know what?
- 1:35Dedra: This I'd want this in my lunchbox.
- 1:39Adam: But the flavor, holy crap, it really, this one right here has been my favorite one so far.
- 1:45Adam: I think it just has that that flavor, a peanut butter jelly sandwich.
- 1:49Dedra: So, what about this one compared to the other one?
- 1:52Dedra: What was it?
- 1:52Dedra: I wish I could remember what the other one, the name of that one was.
- 1:55Adam: It's called like uncrustable or something like that.
- 1:57Adam: Do you remember where it was from?
- 1:58Adam: I don't.
- 1:59Adam: Um I'll have to look that up.
- 2:01Adam: But this, I think, has like a deeper peanut butter flavor and that sweetness.
- 2:06Adam: It's like when you take a drink and you kind of smell it at the same time, I feel like you're having a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
- 2:12Adam: It smells like seriously, like you open your lunch.
- 2:14Adam: Strawberry.
- 2:15Adam: Yeah.
- 2:16Dedra: Strawberry jelly, not great.
- 2:17Adam: Like it says on the thing.
- 2:18Adam: Lunchbox.
- 2:19Dedra: The yeah, the smell is absolutely there with a hint of bread.
- 2:22Dedra: Um yeah.
- 2:29Adam: Sniff, sniff that.
- 2:30Adam: Smell letter.
- 2:31Adam: But that's good.
- 2:35Dedra: That is good.
- 2:35Dedra: But you know what?
- 2:36Dedra: I'm thinking the other one, whichever I gotta, we gotta look that up and figure out what it was.
- 2:41Dedra: But I to me, I like the other one better.
- 2:43Dedra: Really?
- 2:43Dedra: Because it had more of a peanut butter, like a peanut butter flavor to it.
- 2:47Dedra: This one to me almost has like a hint of like red wine.
- 2:52Dedra: Not like a red wine blend, but it has like a red wine little tiny punch to it, if that makes sense.
- 2:59Adam: It's probably the booze in there, 7.5%.
- 3:03Dedra: Yep, and that's going in my lunchbox.
- 3:05Dedra: So because we took our trip to Boston, guess what I got there?
- 3:14Adam: You've been waiting to wear that shirt.
- 3:16Dedra: Yes, I have, and because it's you know, the weather here in Phoenix has been so like you get cold for an hour, two at max, and then it goes right back up to 90, 85.
- 3:28Dedra: So you can't wear stuff like this.
- 3:30Dedra: And here we are at mid uh just past mid-October, that's the 20th.
- 3:36Adam: End October, yeah.
- 3:37Dedra: So, and the weather just keeps going up and down.
- 3:39Dedra: So I was like, you know what?
- 3:40Dedra: We're indoors, gonna crank the air down low, I'm gonna freeze myself out and actually be comfortable in this.
- 3:45Adam: And for those of you listening, not watching, it is a Salem sweatshirt that has a pumpkin on there.
- 3:51Adam: We did buy that in Salem, Massachusetts, so it's kind of special.
- 3:54Adam: Yes, and then your shirt.
- 3:56Adam: Oh, I haven't worn this one yet.
- 3:58Adam: I actually forgot about it, and I was looking inside the closet and I'm like, oh yeah.
- 4:02Adam: But I got the Sunasana uh one-year anniversary t-shirt.
- 4:06Adam: So yeah, I guess it's pretty cool.
- 4:08Dedra: I got one too, but mine, because they only had the men's, I ended up getting, I think it was like the large, but it's thick.
- 4:15Dedra: Man, I love it.
- 4:16Dedra: Because like the quality is there.
- 4:18Dedra: I mean, I wear it and it's like huge, but I like it kind of big that way.
- 4:23Adam: That one wasn't a one-year shirt.
- 4:24Adam: I think that was just like a one of their standards, but right, because they like all of them were like extra large or super small, I think was left on the shelf.
- 4:32Adam: If I and that's if I remember correctly, I think yours was so getting on to the actual topic of our show.
- 4:40Adam: Yes, we actually I said we had a great one and I meant it.
- 4:43Adam: Uh, we went to Italy.
- 4:45Adam: So last week we talked about Oktoberfest.
- 4:48Adam: We had to do that because, you know, beer.
- 4:50Adam: But we did spend a week in Italy and got a lot of good beers there too.
- 4:55Adam: And I'm surprised.
- 4:56Adam: I mean, don't get me wrong, I I do love my wine and uh you especially, but um, we got some great beers while we were there too.
- 5:05Adam: It was just the hunt, trying to find it, and I thought that was a lot of fun.
- 5:09Dedra: That was that really led us to like look and explore and walk around, um, and just try to navigate a different, not just city, but a whole entirely different country.
- 5:22Adam: Ultra everything.
- 5:23Dedra: Yes, and being able to communicate, having that language barrier.
- 5:27Adam: Yep.
- 5:27Adam: And one of the weirdest things I think that we found going, and I could be wrong, so chime in here if uh it it wasn't for you, but trying to find a bar was ridiculous.
- 5:38Adam: And maybe it's just because we're spoiled here in America.
- 5:41Adam: We go to breweries, we go to um just these draft houses where you have 25, 30 beers on tap.
- 5:47Adam: So there's just that variety.
- 5:50Adam: And going to Italy, hunting around, you know, walking up and down the street, trying to find anything that resembled a bar, and you just don't see like a regular sports bar or uh place like that.
- 6:04Adam: Now we didn't have the time to explore enough to like try to find breweries out there.
- 6:08Adam: So the hunt was kind of local to where we were at and trying to trying to just find something that we enjoyed and and we got a lot of stuff in the meantime.
- 6:18Dedra: Yes, absolutely.
- 6:20Dedra: Um, and you're right.
- 6:21Dedra: That was one thing that I really did notice is that you can't just go to your local local sports bar.
- 6:27Dedra: Um, they don't show sports out there.
- 6:30Dedra: So it's not like we're like, ooh, let's watch, you know, basketball or college.
- 6:37Dedra: I mean, college did come on out there, but it was like at four in the morning.
- 6:42Dedra: We were not gonna wake up at four to catch a college game.
- 6:45Dedra: Sorry.
- 6:46Dedra: And soccer.
- 6:46Dedra: Soccer was on always.
- 6:48Dedra: Yes, and soccer.
- 6:49Dedra: But that was one thing that I really missed was I missed my wings and I missed my fries.
- 6:54Dedra: But we didn't get some amazing food anyway.
- 6:58Dedra: Yes, we did eat really good, but at the end of by the time we got to uh the end of our trip and I was just ready to come home, I was like, man, I really just want some fries and some good ass wings.
- 7:10Dedra: Yeah, they really don't fry anything, but no, I mean the only fried thing out there that I remember getting is like calamari.
- 7:18Adam: Yeah.
- 7:18Adam: And that was yeah, pretty much it.
- 7:20Dedra: I think that was the only fried food that they offered out there.
- 7:22Adam: And that was only like one time because all the other calamari we ate was was uh not raw, but it was just uh pan fried.
- 7:29Adam: Like we got a lot of the frutta di mare, the pot with pasta and risotto.
- 7:35Dedra: So good.
- 7:35Dedra: And I'm not a calamari person by any means.
- 7:39Dedra: So when we were out there and I saw it on the dit on a on the dish that was being served, I was like going for it.
- 7:48Dedra: Gotta we're in Italy, a lot of fresh seafood.
- 7:52Dedra: So I was like shaking.
- 7:55Dedra: And I was like, ugh, don't let them see you be a little bitch.
- 7:59Dedra: Just eat it.
- 8:00Dedra: So I went after it finally right there at the end.
- 8:03Dedra: And it was really good.
- 8:04Dedra: Like I really actually enjoyed it because I think maybe just the first and last time I had it, it was overcooked and it was chewy and rubbery.
- 8:11Dedra: And I was just like, oh, like, why do you guys eat this?
- 8:15Dedra: You chew it, and it's like eating one of those like uh fruit rings, those kid like sour fruit rings, and you're sitting there chewing on it for a while.
- 8:24Dedra: But having it out there, I guess that's how you're supposed to serve it and have it.
- 8:29Dedra: So I think that's why I was so like, I don't, okay.
- 8:35Adam: It was good.
- 8:35Adam: It we were right on the water, so we flew into Pisa and we spent our time in uh Carrara and uh Marina de Massa uh Marina or what is that Forte de Oh man.
- 8:49Dedra: I don't know.
- 8:49Dedra: I was just there.
- 8:50Dedra: Forte de Mario, that's what it was.
- 8:52Dedra: Wherever you were, I was just like, okay, we're going here.
- 8:54Dedra: Oh, this is the next stop.
- 8:55Dedra: Oh, this is the next town.
- 8:58Adam: It was right there on the water.
- 9:00Adam: So I they hit we actually saw mussel farms, clam farms, and I'm sure the the calamari came or the squid came right out of the the same for sure the part of the sea, yeah, right there.
- 9:11Adam: It was it was so close.
- 9:13Adam: So we just got to experience a lot of just great foods places to eat.
- 9:18Adam: But the first thing we got when we got there, we got there late, it was after what 24 to 30 hours of travel.
- 9:25Adam: And we go to this place called Allie's Pizza, and uh we had uh a uh co-worker who was out there and that lives out there, so he was just like, Oh, we're gonna stop here first.
- 9:36Adam: This is the best one around.
- 9:38Adam: And he was right.
- 9:40Dedra: The entire trip we went looking around for another pizza that was better than Allie's Pizza, and we could not find one.
- 9:47Dedra: And it was just it wasn't like anything huge and fancy.
- 9:50Dedra: It was this small long building, and it had I feel like it had the front of it.
- 9:58Dedra: Maybe they extended it so there was like some plastic windows or something.
- 10:01Dedra: Yeah.
- 10:02Dedra: But towards the back of it were um there was a bunch of seating area.
- 10:07Dedra: Did it have actual windows that popped out?
- 10:10Dedra: Because I don't I don't think they were the roll-up ones.
- 10:13Adam: I think it was the uh accordion door, so they could close off that part, and then it was like that, like you said, that screened in almost area, like they extended their whole restaurant to fit that.
- 10:22Dedra: Yeah, like they popped it out some more.
- 10:24Dedra: But that was actually a really good idea, that accordion door, because I could definitely see like now the weather out there being really, really good.
- 10:32Dedra: And they do all and it was kind of warm inside there because they're constantly cranking out these pizzas.
- 10:37Adam: Oh, so good.
- 10:39Dedra: Oh my gosh.
- 10:40Dedra: I'll let you talk about the pizza.
- 10:43Adam: You can see me already drooling, that's why, huh?
- 10:46Dedra: Exactly.
- 10:47Adam: And I'm gonna say the reason why it was so good, because we call it Ali's Pizza, but it was spelled Ale's Pizza, and we know how you we like our ales.
- 10:56Adam: Uh we got a uh Diabola pizza, and oh my gosh, that had the the spicy sopra sata on there, just fresh cheese.
- 11:09Adam: The pie was just perfect.
- 11:11Adam: The bread had like a like a what do you call that?
- 11:14Adam: Like a pull to it.
- 11:16Adam: It had like a really nice chew, good flavor.
- 11:19Adam: The sauce was just light and exactly how a pizza should be.
- 11:26Adam: I think that was absolutely perfect.
- 11:28Adam: And while we were there, they had um we could see on the wall and uh like on on shelves, and it looks like they just lost places to put these, but they were all awards for their pizza.
- 11:39Adam: It was just it was wonderful.
- 11:42Adam: They had gluten-free options.
- 11:43Adam: Uh the the uh guy that we were with was gluten-free.
- 11:47Dedra: Well, we weren't sitting towards the register, we were facing the exit.
- 11:51Dedra: So once we kind of started to look off to our left side, we saw like a shelf that had some awards and things like that, uh, trophies.
- 12:01Dedra: And it's like, I just felt like the more that we looked over our shoulder and behind us, they all just kept like multiplying, and rightfully so.
- 12:10Dedra: Like this was great pizza, very fresh.
- 12:13Dedra: The cheese was amazing, the meat was amazing, and I was really bummed that they didn't have wine.
- 12:19Dedra: So, I mean, we went we ended up with beer.
- 12:22Adam: We ended up with beer, but it was okay because they didn't have anything on top, and they're like, all we have is uh this one beer, and it comes from it's from a place local, and we're like, okay, that's that's what we do.
- 12:34Adam: And it was uh Berifico Apuana and uh I'm sorry.
- 12:41Dedra: Oh my god you said that, not me.
- 12:44Adam: Yeah, and it was called Breza, and it was just a golden ale.
- 12:46Adam: Um, I can't say that it was like blew me away, but it was an independent brewery for there in Tuscany, and it was great.
- 12:56Adam: It was a good beer, nice and crisp, and with the pizza and our long travels.
- 13:00Adam: I mean, that was that's exactly what we needed, I think.
- 13:03Adam: Right before you go to bed.
- 13:04Adam: That was perfect.
- 13:05Adam: Yeah.
- 13:06Adam: And then we spent the rest of our time.
- 13:08Adam: I think the next day um we drove up on the mountain and and saw the stone quarries there in Carrara.
- 13:14Adam: And from that um vantage point, they also had a little restaurant there where I think I got some um mushroom polenta.
- 13:23Adam: We got that charcuterie board.
- 13:25Adam: You got a like a small piece of house made lasagna, pitching.
- 13:29Dedra: It was not a small piece of house made lasagna.
- 13:31Dedra: Okay, it was a large piece of yes, and that, oh my god, that charcuterie board.
- 13:38Dedra: I if we ordered a second one, I would have made that my lunch.
- 13:42Dedra: That was good.
- 13:43Dedra: I mean, I would have picked at the other one, you know, my my favorites, but I would have ate that other one by myself.
- 13:51Adam: Yeah, because it had a bunch of things on there too.
- 13:53Dedra: It did, and I'm not a tomato person by any means.
- 13:57Dedra: Like I'm I just I don't like to eat it raw.
- 14:00Dedra: I've been starting to I've been putting it on my my burgers, but I never used to like them on my burgers at all.
- 14:06Dedra: So I've I've come around, still trying to come around to them, actually.
- 14:11Dedra: And they had um uh brucetta there, and it was just piled on with these bright red tomatoes.
- 14:21Dedra: And I was like, we're in Italy.
- 14:23Dedra: The the tomatoes here have to be good.
- 14:26Dedra: So I I again just like that calamari, I went for it and I'm like, don't let them look at you sideways.
- 14:33Dedra: So I I grabbed it and I was just lost a couple tomatoes.
- 14:37Dedra: Oops, uh, you know, my bad, on my way.
- 14:40Dedra: And I just like shoved it because I was just like, I don't want to be have to commit to taking a second bite if I don't like these tomatoes and be rude.
- 14:49Dedra: So I was just like, I just shoved the whole thing in at once.
- 14:53Dedra: And it was really good.
- 14:55Dedra: Like it didn't have like a grainy flavor.
- 14:58Dedra: It wasn't, it was just it was a very just fresh, pure flavor.
- 15:04Dedra: I I can't explain it.
- 15:05Dedra: Like, but it just it doesn't have it didn't make me like look in at tomatoes the same way that entire trip.
- 15:13Dedra: But now that I'm back here, I'm gonna look at a tomato, I'm like, I'm good.
- 15:19Adam: It was different, and I do like tomatoes, even here.
- 15:21Adam: But those tomatoes were just so fresh.
- 15:24Adam: The flavor was just, I mean, it was kind of sweet almost, and and it was so good.
- 15:29Adam: I I enjoyed that.
- 15:30Adam: Um, but we found a little bar, which was funny because m a lot of people, and and this is I think across Europe, a lot of people speak English there.
- 15:40Adam: So we didn't have a lot of trouble going place to place.
- 15:42Adam: Now, this bar that I found, the guy spoke Italian and French.
- 15:48Adam: I don't speak French, so I had to try to communicate in Italian, which hey, I we got our beers.
- 15:53Adam: We did okay.
- 15:54Adam: I paid okay.
- 15:55Adam: And uh we got a few different beers there.
- 15:59Adam: Um, one of them, and actually two of them actually, I don't even know if they're Italian beers, but they were bottled there.
- 16:05Adam: The the uh back of it was all in Italian, and uh they were just strong beers, and I'm like, okay, I didn't expect to find this here.
- 16:13Adam: I thought everything was gonna be like 4.5% or so.
- 16:16Adam: Uh, but mine was called Tenant Super.
- 16:19Adam: Now, not the best beer in the world.
- 16:21Adam: It was a strong lager, but it was uh, I think it was 9% alcohol, and I was like, okay, I gotta try it.
- 16:27Adam: It was a green bottle, so it was kind of skunky, but it was Well, yeah, the bottle's green.
- 16:34Adam: Yeah, I know.
- 16:34Adam: I know, I know this, but it was worth the try.
- 16:37Adam: I think I just wanted to try it.
- 16:39Dedra: I know this.
- 16:42Adam: And it was like, again, no taps, and this was like the only bar.
- 16:45Adam: We had to go find the fridge inside, and we're like digging in with our flashlights, trying to see what's in there, and we just grabbed a couple of the beers and put it in there.
- 16:53Dedra: And nothing made me feel older than that moment.
- 16:56Dedra: It was just like, damn it, it's too dark in here.
- 16:58Dedra: Get your light out.
- 16:59Dedra: Let's look at the menu.
- 17:00Dedra: The word, the damn it, this print's too small.
- 17:03Adam: But they had no chairs in there either.
- 17:04Adam: So nobody was watching us.
- 17:05Adam: All the chairs were outside.
- 17:07Dedra: No, but it was right there though, in front of the window.
- 17:10Dedra: And then we got our phone flashlights on.
- 17:12Dedra: So it's like now we're just putting a spotlight and people are walking by or like, oh my god, check out those old people, and it's only like 7 30 p.m.
- 17:20Dedra: Oh man, you're right.
- 17:23Dedra: So I was like, just get the beer and go.
- 17:27Adam: You got a strong beer too.
- 17:29Dedra: I did actually.
- 17:30Dedra: And I don't know if I'm saying it right.
- 17:31Dedra: Ceres, it's a strong ale, 7.9, 7.7.
- 17:36Dedra: So it was usually a little higher than what I usually drink, but we sat outside, drank it, just people watched because it was right out like on the sidewalk with an enclosed patio.
- 17:48Dedra: Um, but it also had some just like high top chairs with regular like low tables for four, but we sat at the high top.
- 17:54Dedra: Well, I think our table also had four.
- 17:57Dedra: Um, but it was nice because it was like a smaller high top.
- 18:00Dedra: So that really like encouraged conversation.
- 18:02Dedra: So that was really nice.
- 18:04Dedra: I appreciated that.
- 18:05Adam: And it was cool.
- 18:05Adam: There was the breeze.
- 18:06Adam: I mean, it was right on the ocean or right right uh down one of the streets.
- 18:10Adam: The ocean wasn't very far away, and that breeze was coming in, and it was humid there, even though it was like 70 degrees, it it still kind of felt warm.
- 18:17Adam: It wasn't uncomfortable though.
- 18:19Adam: It actually felt very nice uh when the sun went down.
- 18:22Dedra: I agree.
- 18:23Adam: Yeah.
- 18:23Adam: And uh we got more.
- 18:24Adam: So the hotel we were sitting in also had some craft beers there from Tuscany, and it was called, or I think it was in uh the Forte de Marmy, which is just south of where we were at.
- 18:36Adam: And uh that one was uh called Berifico Forte, and I got the Mancina, which was uh Belgian strong ale, and that one again surprised me by the alcohol content in it, and it was uh really tasty.
- 18:50Adam: That was one of my favorites that I had while while we were out there, and I just I think I just kept getting bottle after bottle of it and they're like, here's this guy, just grab him another one.
- 18:58Adam: Ain't nobody's gonna order it.
- 19:00Dedra: Oh my god, look at that big, giant, tall, hairy American.
- 19:03Dedra: He's back.
- 19:06Adam: Let me guess.
- 19:07Adam: The mencina.
- 19:09Dedra: Here you go.
- 19:10Dedra: And that was a menchina.
- 19:11Adam: I'm sorry, I'm I'm saying it wrong.
- 19:13Dedra: And that was a thing out there in much, I think we said this about Boston too, but also in Europe, we noticed there was not a lot of people out there with facial hair.
- 19:22Dedra: They're very clean shaving.
- 19:23Dedra: So I guess they can spot, you know, Adam a mile away.
- 19:29Adam: No, that's funny.
- 19:30Adam: Yeah, a little different.
- 19:31Adam: Everybody was bald and and had no facial hair.
- 19:33Adam: So they were just like a bunch of cue balls everywhere.
- 19:37Dedra: Well, I ended up getting, I think I just had either one or two beers when we were there, and I got the Meridiano, and that was a golden ale.
- 19:45Dedra: Um, and then I did try this red wine, and I really liked that red, and I can't remember, of course, the name of that red wine, but that was kind of just my go-to once we did go back to the hotel um to the bar.
- 19:56Dedra: And we sat outside, which was really nice because they had this like little tiny bar shack hut thing.
- 20:03Dedra: Tiki hut.
- 20:04Dedra: Well, I can't really call it a tiki hut out there.
- 20:08Adam: Yeah, but that's what it kind of reminded me of.
- 20:11Adam: Tiki hut in Italy.
- 20:14Dedra: Yeah.
- 20:15Dedra: So, and they had like these really nice seating areas outside, and during the day they had these huge umbrellas that provided pretty much the whole most the whole outside area with shade, and they had some really tall, tall bushes that also provided a ton of shade.
- 20:30Dedra: So, even though it was like during the afternoon, you weren't ever sitting in direct sun, which was nice.
- 20:36Adam: Um, it was nice, it was like a little courtyard right next to the pool.
- 20:40Dedra: Yeah, the only downside was we ran into mosquitoes.
- 20:43Adam: Oh, yeah, I got chewed up like crazy.
- 20:46Dedra: I got like a couple, but not I didn't get attacked like you did.
- 20:50Adam: I was drinking a lot of beer, so I'm sure that it was just coming out of my pores.
- 20:54Dedra: I don't know.
- 20:55Dedra: At that point, possibly.
- 20:58Adam: But that was good.
- 20:59Adam: I really enjoyed that one.
- 21:01Adam: So uh and just going from place to place just like that.
- 21:05Adam: Oh, and I think I that one had like a neat story in the back of it.
- 21:08Adam: Now I couldn't read any of it, but I'm like, I can read some of the words and I'm like Small print?
- 21:13Adam: Yeah, like Belgian strong ale.
- 21:15Adam: I knew that.
- 21:16Adam: I took chat GPT, took a picture, and I said, What does this say?
- 21:20Adam: And it and it translated it for me, and I thought that was cool.
- 21:23Adam: That is pretty cool, actually.
- 21:24Adam: And that um Banshee that I was dr uh drinking was actually about an old crane that like never broke down and stuff.
- 21:32Adam: I forget the exact story, and I gotta look that up again because I but that was while we were sitting there, so we've did a lot of things since.
- 21:39Adam: But I know it was about a crane that was like it was it was tried and true, never broke, and it lasted forever.
- 21:46Adam: So I th I thought that's kind of neat.
- 21:48Dedra: That is pretty cool.
- 21:49Dedra: Yeah, that is a nice neat backstory.
- 21:50Adam: Yep.
- 21:51Dedra: Nothing that I had had a any sort of cool backstory to it.
- 21:54Adam: Well, I'm pretty sure the Mendian Mend Mendianano, what was it?
- 21:59Dedra: Meridiana?
- 22:00Adam: Meridiano, yes.
- 22:01Adam: I think that one had a story too, but I didn't get that bottle to take a picture of it.
- 22:05Dedra: So I I could have had a cool story.
- 22:10Adam: But it was uh it was a good drink, and uh yours was nice and light and crisp, and mine was strong and tasty.
- 22:17Adam: And they use a lot of like the Belgian ale yeast out there.
- 22:20Adam: I think it's either Belgian or or English ale yeast, because you do get a lot of those esters.
- 22:24Adam: It's a little bit sweeter in that back end.
- 22:26Adam: You kind of kind of get that kind of in the back of your tongue, the sweetness from it, which wasn't a bad thing.
- 22:31Adam: So we had some other food also.
- 22:33Adam: I mean, just along the way, there was times we're just sitting at the beach, um, but having just great meals like the pasta that oh my gosh, and then we just keep talking and talking about it.
- 22:45Dedra: Are you talking about that lunch that we had right there on the beach?
- 22:49Dedra: Oh my god.
- 22:50Dedra: Oh my goodness.
- 22:50Dedra: For what was it, uh Monday?
- 22:53Dedra: Yeah.
- 22:53Dedra: Monday afternoon, sitting on the beach, and we're at a beach club and there's cabanas and tables and chairs just lined up.
- 23:03Dedra: And then further, much further down, right there by the water, they have like little lounge chairs and stuff.
- 23:10Dedra: So, and it it kind of goes up on a hill.
- 23:13Dedra: So even though we're at a table, we could still see right over all the lounge chairs and all the people, and we still had a really nice view of the water.
- 23:22Dedra: That was probably the best Monday midday.
- 23:27Dedra: Well, when else do you have lunch?
- 23:29Dedra: That was the best Monday lunch I've ever had.
- 23:32Dedra: Just the view, the wine.
- 23:35Dedra: And then we had a cigar after lunch, and it was, and then we took a walk right there on the on the beach.
- 23:42Dedra: And that water there, I gotta tell you, it is nothing like the beaches out here.
- 23:47Dedra: Well, not obviously not in Phoenix, but in California, because like the water, everybody's like, oh, it's fine, you'll get used to it.
- 23:54Dedra: No, you don't get used to it.
- 23:55Dedra: You get numb.
- 23:56Dedra: That's what you you get numb, and that's what makes you think you're used to it.
- 24:00Dedra: It's freaking cold.
- 24:01Dedra: But out there, I don't know the temperature of the water, but I was comfortable up to like my shins walking in it because the water was just nice and cool.
- 24:10Dedra: Like you could sit in it and you're not like, you know, because like the the water touches your stomach or something.
- 24:17Dedra: But it was just like you just you could sit there and it was cool.
- 24:23Dedra: It wasn't too warm, but it was like just the perfect temperature.
- 24:27Dedra: And the the shore was just beautiful.
- 24:30Dedra: Something about that sand, and I didn't feel like, oh, oh, a broken seashell, oh, you know, getting my feet cut up or anything like that.
- 24:39Dedra: It was just beautiful.
- 24:41Dedra: I could I could have spent hours just walking up and down that shore with a bottle, not a glass, a bottle of wine.
- 24:49Adam: I'm pretty sure a lot of people do that.
- 24:50Dedra: People were walking all over just like right down the coast and just walking all yeah, and they had a they have a pier also, and I would have just taken a nap underneath that pier in the shade with the bottle of mine.
- 25:04Dedra: That would have been my perfect afternoon nap.
- 25:10Adam: We had like the muscles, I think it was no, it was uh clams, languinian clams that was just so good and fresh.
- 25:16Adam: It was amazing, and and they don't they do it all without actually using butter, too.
- 25:22Adam: That's something we asked about.
- 25:23Adam: It's all just olive oil and just the juices of what they're they're using to cook things in, and I thought that was amazing.
- 25:30Adam: Um, but the next day we went to another, we were looking for a bar.
- 25:34Adam: They we heard there was one.
- 25:36Adam: We walked like three-quarters of a mile, mile down the road, and the place that said that it was a bar was closed.
- 25:44Dedra: So, well, we're looking at it from across the street, and this street is probably three lanes each way.
- 25:50Dedra: So we're looking at seven plus the turning lane.
- 25:54Dedra: So I'm looking at you, you're looking at me, we're eyeballing this abandoned, you know, run-down-looking shack on the corner.
- 26:00Dedra: And we're like, we've been to our share of dye bars.
- 26:03Dedra: Let's go.
- 26:04Dedra: Let's try it out, let's take our chances.
- 26:06Dedra: So we're like, and traffic out there, you're lucky if they stop.
- 26:11Dedra: Like you gotta get your business across the street fast because those people are zippy out there.
- 26:16Dedra: And if you don't like establish your presence and take, you know, control and just be there in the in the crosswalk, you're done.
- 26:24Dedra: You're you're gonna go flying.
- 26:26Dedra: And it's gonna be your fault.
- 26:27Dedra: You're the pedestrian, not the driver, not the car.
- 26:30Dedra: You shouldn't have been walking there, right?
- 26:33Dedra: And so, like the the priority or you know, the people well the the hierarchy, yeah, would be all the people on bikes and motorcycles, and then cars and then pedestrians.
- 26:50Adam: Dogs might fit in there too somewhere, but I'm not sure where.
- 26:53Dedra: But man, those people on motorcycles and those motorized bicycles, they all pass on the left towards oncoming and they zip right back in front of you and they cut you right back off.
- 27:04Dedra: Yeah.
- 27:04Dedra: And nobody gets mad out there.
- 27:07Dedra: Like there is no um road rage out there.
- 27:10Dedra: Everybody is that we saw.
- 27:12Dedra: Right.
- 27:13Dedra: It was just like organized chaos, and nobody had the look of fear, nobody was slamming on their horns because you cut them off.
- 27:21Dedra: Like they all knew their place, they all knew the patterns of traffic.
- 27:25Dedra: I mean, if you sat at that light and it was half a second green and you weren't on that gas pedal, you got the horn.
- 27:32Dedra: You might have got a little peep.
- 27:33Adam: It wasn't as bad as Boston, but I also think that I don't understand how all the cars out there weren't just jacked up.
- 27:40Adam: The roads were too narrow, and people are just flying around, and it's blind corner sometimes.
- 27:46Adam: People are going around and those dotted lines, you know, for what are they called?
- 27:50Adam: Lanes that you're supposed to stay between.
- 27:52Adam: Those were more suggestions.
- 27:54Adam: I think they painted them once when the road was built, and they never bothered to paint them.
- 27:58Dedra: I'm sure because of laws, they were like, okay, we have to have lanes.
- 28:02Adam: Yeah.
- 28:02Dedra: And then once everybody got on the road, it was like, no, no, we don't.
- 28:06Dedra: I'll drive my way, you drive your way, and it's gonna work.
- 28:11Dedra: And they were like, okay, and it's been that way ever since.
- 28:16Adam: So we after we got uh snuffed at that bar because it wasn't open, we walked.
- 28:23Dedra: Oh, right.
- 28:23Dedra: So got sorry, got sidetracked because of that crosswalk thing.
- 28:27Dedra: So we make it across, we're like, oh, this can't be it.
- 28:31Dedra: Like we just crossed seven lanes of traffic.
- 28:34Dedra: We need a drink after that.
- 28:36Dedra: So we walk further down the sidewalk.
- 28:38Dedra: So it looks like it's kind of big the further you go back.
- 28:41Dedra: And we're like, maybe there's an entrance on the back side of it.
- 28:44Dedra: So we're following this gate, and hopefully we can see like an entrance somewhere.
- 28:49Dedra: And it's it's like a closed-in park on the back side of this abandoned building.
- 28:55Dedra: And I'm like, whoa, hold on.
- 28:56Dedra: So it's like this big corner that's fenced off in one tiny corner is supposed to be that bar, and the rest of it looks like a park where there's equipment and swings and there's people there, and kids are playing.
- 29:10Dedra: So it's like, okay, first of all, how do you guys get into this?
- 29:14Dedra: Did you guys do you can jump the fence?
- 29:16Dedra: Like, I ain't jumping the fence.
- 29:18Dedra: Yeah.
- 29:19Dedra: We gave up on that though.
- 29:20Dedra: Not to go to a damn park.
- 29:23Adam: We gave up on that and had to like hustle back across that street somehow.
- 29:28Adam: I think we did some stretches first and walked around behind the buildings to pretend like we were doing something, but no, we had to get back across that street.
- 29:36Dedra: Yeah, we had to get warmed up on this one because we were like, okay, this place we passed by for sure, and they were open.
- 29:43Dedra: There was cars and people I could see.
- 29:45Dedra: So this time was smoother.
- 29:48Dedra: Um, so we got to the next place.
- 29:50Dedra: Do you remember the name of the place?
- 29:51Adam: I don't, but it was like we just because we were just looking at beach club after beach club, and we saw one and we kind of eyeballed it, like, hey, no, that looks like it's pretty cool.
- 30:00Adam: They have, I could see that they they had drinks inside, I think.
- 30:03Adam: And I'm like, let's just go.
- 30:04Adam: We had to go across their parking lot and we went inside this old wooden building, and it was pretty neat inside there.
- 30:10Adam: I liked it.
- 30:11Dedra: It wasn't like a newer, fancier one, like the ones way up towards like the downtown area.
- 30:17Dedra: This one was a little bit down the row.
- 30:19Dedra: So it was something that we were more comfortable with.
- 30:21Dedra: We didn't have to like, I guess we didn't need uh like a social status to be at this one.
- 30:27Dedra: Because we don't buy, huh?
- 30:29Dedra: We don't have her hold on, so they probably looked at us and we're like, oh, you poor people, come here.
- 30:34Dedra: Here's some food, water, wine, beer, whatever you need here.
- 30:40Dedra: Actually, she did give us snacks with our bee.
- 30:43Adam: Very true.
- 30:44Adam: She gave she fed us somehow.
- 30:46Adam: But that was another thing they kind of did.
- 30:48Dedra: We were in bad shape.
- 30:50Adam: Everywhere we went, they kind of gave us a little tray of food, like a little little snacks to go with whatever we would do.
- 30:55Adam: We could just say, hey, we're just here for one drink.
- 30:57Adam: And they brought like pretzels and little bread things and all that stuff just to eat.
- 31:02Dedra: And I miss that because I felt like that's what they used to do a lot, you know, back in the day is they would always give you a thing of pretzels or a trail mixer, you know, something to eat, something to snack on.
- 31:11Dedra: Yeah.
- 31:12Dedra: But you're right, everywhere that we did go, it was just like a a tray of just snacks.
- 31:17Adam: Little things, yeah.
- 31:18Adam: And it was like some of them were really good.
- 31:20Adam: Remember, there was one that we had like a salmon bite.
- 31:22Adam: We had like they were there, they had a lot of variety, and I thought that was really neat.
- 31:26Adam: So this beach club, I gotta talk about this because I think there we got some of the best craft beer, and I have a feeling these people were pretty Americanized.
- 31:37Adam: I think all the labels were written in English, but it was a brewery out in Tuscany.
- 31:42Adam: Um, and it was at this beach club.
- 31:44Adam: They had little cans of this beer, and I thought it was amazing.
- 31:48Adam: We got like what, like four of them?
- 31:50Dedra: We loved it.
- 31:51Dedra: So we tried it out at first.
- 31:53Dedra: Like the can art was hilarious, it was great.
- 31:57Dedra: And that was like what drew us in first, and we were like, it is actually actually like really, really good.
- 32:03Dedra: This is pretty good.
- 32:03Dedra: Like, so we went back to the cooler and grabbed some more, and then went back and grabbed some more.
- 32:09Adam: Yeah, and we ended up taking some home, which we uh already drank, so sorry, we couldn't resist.
- 32:14Adam: Three of them were from a brewery called Radical Brewing.
- 32:20Adam: Now, that's not that's not very Italian, is it?
- 32:22Adam: No, not at all.
- 32:24Adam: But there was an IPA, and I was like, I haven't seen an IPA since I got here, and it was called Hobson Bounds, and again, you could tell the yeast, it was like that real sweet, uh, either Belgian or uh English yeast that they're using.
- 32:37Adam: But that was a really good beer.
- 32:39Adam: I love the can art, and it was just great that we found this at this little beach club that we just stumbled across.
- 32:46Adam: It was it was a lot of fun, and I just enjoyed sitting in that patio area.
- 32:50Adam: It was all in the shade, and there was a breeze from the ocean coming right between like the wall and the building, and we were just it was it was because it was kind of warm after walking around and sitting right there was perfect having my I first IPA in Italy, and that was excellent.
- 33:07Dedra: Well, I went with um still the same brewery and it was called Heavy Tune, we heavy, and it was great because the canner, like I said, it was the canner on this one, it was hilarious.
- 33:18Dedra: Yeah, so it's this guy in the breeze.
- 33:20Dedra: You know, if you angled it just right with the the breeze coming in from the ocean, it looks like it's lifting up his kilt.
- 33:27Dedra: And you see a little butt cheek right there, and he's just standing there like this.
- 33:32Dedra: So I was like, that's freaking hilarious.
- 33:35Dedra: So I was like, I gotta try this just because it's they're having fun with the label, and it was good, and it was very malty.
- 33:42Dedra: It was, it was.
- 33:44Adam: It was like a good, almost like an amber ale, but I felt like I had one called Daft Bach also from that same brewery, and that one had a very deep flavor.
- 33:53Adam: Both of them were kind of like amber ales, I feel.
- 33:55Adam: Well, we heavy is kind of like that anyway, maybe a little bit sweeter.
- 33:58Adam: The Bach was, I would say, very similar in flavor.
- 34:02Adam: It was, but they were both really good beers, and it was just fun to sit there and drink that.
- 34:07Adam: And you had another one too from a different brewery.
- 34:11Dedra: I did.
- 34:12Dedra: It was a West Coast Pilsner, and it was from Beri Burifico Lambarte.
- 34:18Dedra: And I love your Italian.
- 34:21Dedra: It was American.
- 34:22Dedra: I mean, I'm saying it wrong, but looking at the label, I was like, American Magut.
- 34:26Dedra: I was like, okay.
- 34:29Adam: I read it as maggot.
- 34:31Adam: I don't know.
- 34:31Adam: I was maybe I was just thinking of uh uh major pain.
- 34:37Dedra: Yes, but that would have been two G's, it would have been spelled a little bit differently, but this is literally M-A-G-U-T.
- 34:43Dedra: And I was like, oh man, I'm looking at my American Magut.
- 34:48Dedra: So I was like sat there, cracked it in shame, and enjoyed it.
- 34:54Adam: And that was light too.
- 34:56Adam: I think that was after having the other three that were actually kind of heavy.
- 34:59Adam: That one was a good one.
- 35:00Dedra: And then plus, like, like you said, it was kind of warm.
- 35:03Dedra: And for me personally, when it's warm, I don't like to drink anything too heavy.
- 35:08Dedra: Obviously, you on the contrary of beliefs.
- 35:11Dedra: Cold, hot, sweating your ass.
- 35:15Adam: Yeah, and that was like all those places.
- 35:16Adam: We were there for what, five or six days, and that was all like right on the ocean.
- 35:20Adam: And then we got to travel to Verona, and that was like a whole change in in everything.
- 35:27Adam: It's like the classic Italian look that you get going to Verona, that's pretty much where you're at.
- 35:33Adam: You got the cobbled streets, the narrow, the little uh green shutters.
- 35:39Adam: Yeah, green shutters everywhere with the windows with the strings going back and forth, the people actually drying their clothes out there.
- 35:44Adam: I mean, it is so Italian.
- 35:46Adam: I feel like that was good.
- 35:48Adam: And then the food is different too.
- 35:49Adam: Instead of that nice light seafood, we're getting, we're getting the beef, we're getting a lot more of just like the the heavier meats.
- 35:58Dedra: Um that was the one thing is when we got into Verona when we're first pulling up or driving around to try to find our hotel.
- 36:06Dedra: Again, like they're what three, four-story, five-story buildings.
- 36:10Dedra: And they're old, but they're beautiful.
- 36:13Dedra: Like everything just looks you could take a picture on accident and it's gonna look like a postcard.
- 36:19Dedra: Like that's how beautiful Verona was.
- 36:21Dedra: I could, I could truly live there.
- 36:23Dedra: But like my biggest fear when we're driving through the streets was I just felt like, oh my gosh, I hope I don't have like I hope I don't freak out and become, you know, like extremely claustrophobic while we're here.
- 36:34Dedra: Because I'm already kind of claustrophobic as it is, but just having the towering buildings and driving through, I was just looking up, like, oh no, like, does it open up anywhere?
- 36:48Adam: And it wasn't.
- 36:48Adam: It was pretty close.
- 36:49Adam: Like if you wanted to walk towards the water, I didn't know which direction it was because there was a uh a river that went through um right in old town um Verona.
- 36:59Adam: And I couldn't tell which way the river was.
- 37:01Adam: It was just like, man, if I got lost, I would just have to walk until I ran into something that looked familiar or the water.
- 37:07Adam: It would because it kind of surrounded the city.
- 37:09Adam: So, but that was interesting.
- 37:10Dedra: But thankfully there was a break in the buildings, and it was like this huge open outside area where, like during the day, they have a lot of street vendors that are right there, and it's right in front of this Coliseum.
- 37:22Dedra: And there's this giant clock also that sits down in that area, and that was what I needed because then I could just felt like I could breathe, I could breathe.
- 37:32Dedra: And I was like, that was the open that I had needed from walking and driving between these buildings.
- 37:39Dedra: And I don't know how people drive there like in Verona, because the streets and the sidewalk, there is no difference.
- 37:47Dedra: It's the same thing.
- 37:48Dedra: Like they might have, you know, half a half a cobblestone, you know, for the sidewalk, and you're gonna get taken out by a side mirror.
- 37:56Dedra: Suck it in.
- 38:00Dedra: And it's like, I can't damn it.
- 38:04Dedra: You know what day in a vacation this is.
- 38:07Dedra: I know the food.
- 38:09Dedra: Holy crap.
- 38:10Adam: There was such good food.
- 38:11Adam: I mean, oh, I I I don't even know where to even begin with.
- 38:15Adam: We went to one meal, and I can't remember I got this amarone risotto, and it was like a wine base, had no meat, and that was wonderful.
- 38:26Adam: And you got that I know we were sharing both of them, we split them halfway, and it was a meat sitting on some potatoes, and then the truffle.
- 38:36Dedra: Oh my god.
- 38:36Dedra: So it was a piece of steak.
- 38:38Dedra: It was a piece of steak, and the gentleman comes over and he's just like truffles, and I'm like, Yes, please do.
- 38:47Dedra: And he's all ch looking at me like whenever, ma'am, whenever, miss, just tell me when to stop.
- 38:54Dedra: And I was like, Oh my god, this is this is how they do it at Olive Garden with their parmesan cheese.
- 39:00Dedra: This guy's all truffle, truffle, slicing it.
- 39:02Dedra: And they were good sized slices too.
- 39:04Dedra: So I was like, when does the greed stop?
- 39:08Dedra: And I was like, all right, all right, that's enough.
- 39:12Dedra: Hoping he wasn't gonna hear me, but he heard me.
- 39:15Dedra: Oh man.
- 39:16Adam: We got another meal too, and I can't remember with another like piece of it was beef cheek that was like slow roasted, so it was almost like just fall apart on top of like a little bit of polenta or something.
- 39:27Adam: Oh my god, that was just like that was good.
- 39:30Dedra: And I think we split that one because it was just like a little bit of a little bit of a little bit Oh yeah, that's the one where you dropped the bread after doing the scarpeta right there on the table.
- 39:36Adam: Oh yeah, thanks for bringing that up.
- 39:38Adam: Appreciate that.
- 39:39Dedra: I was curious when you're gonna bring that one up.
- 39:42Adam: So one of the days we went to Lake Garda, and there's this little peninsula that goes into the lake, and it goes in pretty far.
- 39:52Adam: It's like this little skinny landmass with an with a castle on there.
- 39:57Adam: It was called uh Sirmione, and uh we got another beer there, another IPA there.
- 40:03Adam: Um after walking around, we did a tour of this amazing castle, and then we we wanted a pizza again, and still did not uh did not match Allie's pizza, and but we went there anyway, and um we didn't know what it was gonna be like when we got it, and they had uh craft beer there too from the area, and it was called uh Maldipa, I believe it is, or it was Mal double IPA.
- 40:30Adam: I I have no idea, but it had like a little picture of a skull on there again.
- 40:35Adam: Great art.
- 40:36Adam: Did not really taste like an IPA, but to be sitting there with like the cobbles and and the lake on both sides of us, right after seeing the castle, it just almost felt surreal at that point.
- 40:49Adam: That that was amazing.
- 40:50Dedra: It was beautiful and cobblestone and my ankle.
- 40:55Adam: Yeah, still bothering her.
- 40:57Dedra: After a while, I was just like, I just want to sit.
- 41:00Adam: So it's so funny.
- 41:02Adam: We recorded a couple episodes of of this show.
- 41:04Adam: I think it's episode one and two, and then we're like, we gotta do an intro show.
- 41:07Adam: So we did like a little bonus episode that day that we recorded our intro shirt show, and you can go back to the very first one that we published.
- 41:18Adam: That was right after DJ broke her ankle.
- 41:20Adam: I think it was like that same night or the next day, and you still hadn't even gone to the doctor for like a full assessment yet.
- 41:28Dedra: Yeah.
- 41:29Dedra: Yes, that's what you're talking about.
- 41:31Dedra: And we were actually right over here in front of our little um shelving area in the kitchen that has all of our our uh glass wine uh our wine glasses and our beer cups and all that stuff.
- 41:42Dedra: So, yes, you are right, actually.
- 41:44Dedra: And we were headed to, I think we're headed to downtown Phoenix for, I think it was the Diamondback symbol opener.
- 41:51Dedra: Um so, and we were, I think, waiting for the Uber to come and get us.
- 41:56Dedra: And I just had my scooter, oh man, scooter, downtown Phoenix, home opener of the Diamondbacks, freshly broken ankle.
- 42:06Dedra: It's not even like in a, it wasn't even in a boot yet.
- 42:10Dedra: It was just in what they wrapped it up in in the emergency room.
- 42:14Dedra: Just that cruising around.
- 42:16Dedra: That was not one of my smartest choices.
- 42:22Dedra: But we had already committed, we had committed to with friends and you know, we're heading out, and it was a home opener.
- 42:29Dedra: We've gone.
- 42:30Dedra: We've we've gone quite a few times, so it's just almost kind of become tradition.
- 42:34Dedra: So I was just like broken ankle or not, I'm going down.
- 42:38Adam: I already reserved our seats.
- 42:41Dedra: In fact, Uber's here.
- 42:45Adam: But um, that being said, it was an extremely great time in Italy.
- 42:50Adam: We enjoyed every moment of it.
- 42:52Adam: The food, the the beer, the wine, that everything that we had while we were there.
- 42:57Adam: It was absolutely wonderful, the scenery, and of course the company, because I enjoy spending all that time with you.
- 43:03Dedra: Thanks, buddy.
- 43:06Adam: But uh, thank you for joining us on this wonderful show where we got more wonderful content for you, too.
- 43:12Adam: Because you know what?
- 43:12Adam: There's a lot of places that we haven't been.
- 43:14Adam: So cheers, everybody, and can't wait till we talk about the next one.
- 43:18Dedra: Cheers.
