- 0:00Today's episode is the weirdest one of the Health with Hashimoto's Lab series.
- 0:05Absolutely weird. I was 100% skeptical, and I understand if you are too.
- 0:10Today we're talking about coffee enemas. Welcome to the Health with Hashimoto's
- 0:14podcast. Our summer series is the Hashimoto's Health Lab.
- 0:18This series is going to be 10-minute episodes.
- 0:21Every week we'll talk about a specific tool or practice.
- 0:24We're going to cover everything from environmental detox to stress reduction,
- 0:27energy boosters, biohacks, and all of it is going to be designed to give you
- 0:32tools for better health with Hashimoto's.
- 0:35I'm your host, Esther Yunkin. I'm a registered nurse helping women uncover their
- 0:39root causes and regain energy.
- 0:41So these episodes are going to be short. If you are ready for a deeper transformation,
- 0:45check out the Holistic Hashimoto's course. It will help you identify your unique
- 0:50triggers and root causes so that you can focus your own energy on what really
- 0:54matters for your health.
- 0:56Are you ready to explore a new strategy for thriving with Hashimoto's?
- 0:59Let's dive in. This is the Hashimoto's Health Lab.
- 1:02Yes, at the beginning, I really did say a coffee enema.
- 1:06I know, completely weird and out there, right?
- 1:10Last week, I warned you that this week is going to be the weirdest one. And it is.
- 1:14Why would you put coffee up an exit-only hole, right?
- 1:21I know, weird. So let me backtrack with some history.
- 1:26Coffee enemas started in the 1800s, or at least that's when we have documentation of them starting.
- 1:34In medical literature, people were using them for post-operative care and to relieve discomfort.
- 1:40In 1966, there was a case where a child was poisoned accidentally,
- 1:46and the child was treated with coffee enemas.
- 1:49Early in the 20th century, it was made more famous through a doctor, Max Gerson.
- 1:57And this is the most widely cited thing that I have seen when I'm looking at
- 2:03information on coffee enemas.
- 2:05The Gerson protocol or Gerson therapy is using coffee enemas.
- 2:12And then he also used like a vegetarian diet and raw juices,
- 2:17very organic, and it was to help people detox. And I believe he also used it for cancer.
- 2:26So when he was doing his protocol, he had up to five coffee enemas a day,
- 2:31which is, in my mind, still crazy.
- 2:34Like, you know, we're already on the far end of the spectrum of crazy when we're
- 2:38talking about coffee enemas. And then you want to do five a day?
- 2:41No, that's just too much for me. But I did dig into this topic a lot because
- 2:47it comes up quite frequently in like crunchy or holistic or natural circles.
- 2:53And at first, like I said, I was incredibly skeptical.
- 2:57I wanted all of the research. I wanted to know why does it work?
- 3:00Why do people suggest this? What are the goals?
- 3:04And then of course, how to do it. So why?
- 3:07Why? Why? I mean, like I said, exit only whole, right?
- 3:11That is what I thought. And I want to preface this by saying I I have given
- 3:14hundreds of enemas over my career as a nurse. I have given salt,
- 3:20water, you know, saline enemas. I have given soap suds enemas.
- 3:24I have given milk and molasses enemas. So I have given some weird enemas in
- 3:29my career as a nurse. They all have a purpose.
- 3:32So I did believe that when people are talking about coffee enemas, there was a purpose.
- 3:38So the purpose is this, or the intention. The coffee goes in and you hold it in your colon.
- 3:46And then as it's in there, some of it does get absorbed and specific chemicals
- 3:53in the coffee trigger the liver.
- 3:56And this is really all about liver health. And then it downstream affects the
- 4:01things that the liver impacts.
- 4:03So if you are helping the liver do a better job, you're helping it detoxify,
- 4:08you're stimulating glutathione.
- 4:10And glutathione is like sticky fly paper. It sticks to all of the stuff in your
- 4:14body that you don't want.
- 4:15It's like the master detox antioxidant that your body creates.
- 4:20Glutathione is amazing. We're going to talk about it in another episode of the
- 4:23Hashimoto's Health Lab this summer. And so you're stimulating glutathione.
- 4:28Potentially, you're also aiding clearance of some of the things in your liver.
- 4:33You're helping it do its job of
- 4:36getting rid of the stuff that it's trying to get rid of. Because your liver
- 4:39is a very, very, very hard-working organ, and it does get backed up.
- 4:45I mean, like, its list of things to do is too long.
- 4:49And so that's why it sends estrogen back around in the blood circulation,
- 4:54because it doesn't have time and resources to get to it.
- 4:57So it's like, okay, estrogen, go back around.
- 5:00I'll get to you next time you come through. And the next time the estrogen comes
- 5:03through for detox to get rid of, the liver is like, oh, nope,
- 5:07still don't have time, go through again.
- 5:08And that's why you build up estrogens, why you can have some estrogen dominance.
- 5:13And estrogen dominance seems to be a root cause or a trigger of Hashimoto's
- 5:18and other autoimmune problems.
- 5:21So that is one thing that a coffee enema does. It helps the liver.
- 5:25There is good written information about coffee enemas, but a lot of the information
- 5:30about coffee enemas is anecdotal. It is stories.
- 5:33And let me tell you my story. I started out super, super skeptical, obviously.
- 5:37Exit only whole, right? But I also started out with the knowledge of I've given
- 5:42so many enemas and they do have a purpose.
- 5:45So when I was looking at the liver and I knew that, you know,
- 5:48pretty much everybody, at least every woman has a liver component to their autoimmune problem.
- 5:54You probably have estrogen dominance. And I knew I did.
- 5:57So over the last couple years, I have been getting monthly migraines.
- 6:02They happen on the first day of my period, roundabout then, sometimes with ovulation.
- 6:08So I knew that my migraines had a hormonal component.
- 6:11And finally, I was so like, just, I just didn't know what else to do.
- 6:16So I was like, okay, I'm going to try a coffee enema. And do you know what?
- 6:19The coffee enemas work for my migraines better than anything else I have tried.
- 6:25And I have tried everything.
- 6:26I have spent thousands of dollars on chiropractic and supplements and so many different tools.
- 6:34And I haven't been able to make much progress.
- 6:37Everything will move me a little bit, but nothing was really helping.
- 6:42And that is why I finally decided to try a coffee enema.
- 6:45So I went on Amazon, I got an enema kit, I got a stainless steel bucket,
- 6:50and I got coffee that's for this.
- 6:53So you want light roast coffee and you want it clean. You do not want to have
- 6:57any molds or toxins in it, obviously, and you want it to have caffeine.
- 7:03And so I read up on it and I'm going to tell you how to do it in just a second.
- 7:06And I tried it and it was really not as bad as I expected.
- 7:10I don't know if I have like a really strong gut and colon or something,
- 7:14but it really was not as bad as I expected.
- 7:17And so I held it in, went to the bathroom. I was like, okay,
- 7:20whatever. But as I did them, probably about once a month with my period and with that migraine, I
- 7:27it helped everything else work. So I went from periods where I would get a 7
- 7:33out of 10 migraine, I was throwing up, and nothing would work.
- 7:37The coffee enema would allow my medications to work. And so I could finally get some relief.
- 7:44And then, if you listen to episode 146, where I share my six-month experience
- 7:49trying the MindBody GLP-1 system, that really turned things around because it's
- 7:54helping my hormones and my gut on a whole nother level.
- 7:57So I haven't needed to use the coffee enemas as much.
- 8:01But that is my personal story from crazy skeptical to looking at the information,
- 8:06looking at the written research and, you know, documentation and hearing stories,
- 8:12and then finally being curious, and then finally trying it, and then getting
- 8:16to the point where it's one of the first things I do when I get a migraine.
- 8:20Because I know that my liver is involved. I know that my hormones are involved.
- 8:25I know that those two things go together. And I know that the coffee enemas
- 8:28seem to help my situation.
- 8:31Your health is unique and nobody can tell you this is 100% going to work for you.
- 8:37And for sure as something as weird as this, I'm not going to say jump in with
- 8:41this with both feet. I'm saying.
- 8:43Explore it. Maybe it's the right choice for you. Maybe you're like,
- 8:47absolutely not, Esther.
- 8:49You completely lost me on this one. I totally understand.
- 8:52So if you want to try one, you're going to get an enema kit.
- 8:56Like I said, mine is a stainless steel bucket because I don't want plastics.
- 9:00You're going to brew the coffee and let it cool down.
- 9:03You do not have heat receptors in the base of your intestines and in your colon
- 9:09because they're not designed for input.
- 9:11So you have to let it cool down.
- 9:14Test it like you would a baby bottle. Test the temperature on the inside of your wrist.
- 9:19And then you're going to follow the enema instructions.
- 9:23Let the coffee go in. You can control the speed at which it goes in.
- 9:28Do not overwhelm your intestines and your colon.
- 9:32Go slow. And then you want to lay on. Okay, so this is where I'm going to differ
- 9:37from a lot of the information out there.
- 9:39You're going to lay on your left side when you're putting that coffee in because
- 9:43that's how your physiology is.
- 9:47It's going to go up into your colon and then it's going to go down into your large intestine.
- 9:53And so you're laying on your left side. And then once you're holding the enema,
- 9:57you're going to hold it for ideally 15 to 20 minutes.
- 10:00You can lay on your back or even your right side, but you're going to lay on
- 10:05your left side because that's the side that you lay on when you're doing an enema.
- 10:08And then once you're done holding it or once your body is saying,
- 10:11okay, we're done, you're going to go up to the toilet and expel all of it and
- 10:16clean everything, clean all of your equipment and everything so that it's ready for the next time.
- 10:20It's pretty simple and it's pretty weird. I get it. So let me know.
- 10:26Come over to our school community. It is private. People cannot see our conversations
