Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:04Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Good morning. Happy Friday. Washington State Beef Commission Football Friday.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Headlines are brought to you by Frostbrood Coors Light. As
- 0:13Speaker 2: cold as the Rockies, the Seahawks put Zach Charbonnet on
- 0:17Speaker 2: the 53-man roster. Off the physically unable to perform list yesterday.
- 0:21Speaker 2: That has him poised to make his season debut at
- 0:23Speaker 2: running back Sunday night against Kansas City. You'll hear from
- 0:26Speaker 2: Charbonnet next segment. You'll hear me ask him about his contract,
- 0:29Speaker 2: which suddenly is ending. Yeah, he's walking back into a
- 0:32Speaker 2: contract year in the middle of it. First game in
- 0:36Speaker 2: eight months. Nine months since he played, actually. Eight months
- 0:39Speaker 2: since reconstructive knee surgery Sunday night. A couple edge defenders
- 0:42Speaker 2: were limited by new injury issues in practice yesterday. Demarcus Lawrence,
- 0:46Speaker 2: Uchenna Nwosu. The injury report for the game comes out
- 0:50Speaker 2: at 1 p.m. or so today. Bears beat the Patriots
- 0:54Speaker 2: last night to begin NFL Week 7. Chicago's now 5-2
- 0:57Speaker 2: the next game at the Seahawks. One week from Monday
- 1:00Speaker 2: at Lumen Field. Talk about mini-bye. Bears have a long
- 1:04Speaker 2: time between now and when they play the Seahawks at
- 1:07Speaker 2: Lumen Field a week from Monday. A definite rest advantage
- 1:09Speaker 2: for Chicago in that one. Kraken won for the seventh
- 1:12Speaker 2: time in 11 games to begin their season. 5-3 over
- 1:16Speaker 2: previously rolling Utah. First place team. This is the best
- 1:19Speaker 2: start to a season in the Kraken's sixth year of existence.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Tomorrow they host Minnesota at Climate Pledge Arena. Mike Benton
- 1:27Speaker 2: pregame at 6.30. Puck drop at 7 p.m. right here
- 1:30Speaker 2: in your home of the roaring.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Kraken, KJR. Kraken have scored the third most goals in
- 1:35Speaker 3: the Western Conference, fourth most in the league right now.
- 1:38Speaker 4: I know, and everyone wanted them over the past couple
- 1:41Speaker 4: years to start fast, right?
- 1:43Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:44Speaker 4: So we're not doing this, it's an early thing. We're doing, sure,
- 1:48Speaker 4: it's early, but let's look.
- 1:50Speaker 2: And they wanted them to score, and they wanted them
- 1:52Speaker 2: to shoot more, and it's working so far. It's working.
- 1:56Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 1:56Speaker 2: There were a lot of goals last night.
- 1:58Speaker 6: Now they bring it back in onside.
- 2:00Speaker 7: Jordan Eberle has.
- 2:01Speaker 6: Shot near wing.
- 2:01Speaker 8: It bounces off the end boards, off the back of Mimalka,
- 2:05Speaker 8: and they score.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Berkeley Cat, nice move on Kraus. Cat throws it down low.
- 2:11Speaker 6: Backdoor tap-in.
- 2:12Speaker 9: Scores!
- 2:15Speaker 2: Matty Beneers draws the penalty. Montour to the half wall.
- 2:19Speaker 10: The captain.
- 2:20Speaker 6: Back to Montour.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Wides.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Fires.
- 2:23Speaker 6: Scores!
- 2:23Speaker 1: Now Seattle brings it up the right side.
- 2:27Speaker 2: McMahon shoots. That one through the pads of Mimalka. Goes
- 2:30Speaker 2: off the side of the goal.
- 2:31Speaker 6: McMahon again. Back door.
- 2:33Speaker 9: Scores!
- 2:35Speaker 3: Sameth can't hold the line.
- 2:37Speaker 2: And Seattle will chase him back to the center circle.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Now Goudreau picks it off toward the empty net.
- 2:42Speaker 6: Scores!
- 2:46Speaker 2: Puck pressure from Freddy Gaudreau.
- 2:48Speaker 6: In the neutral zone.
- 2:49Speaker 7: Takes it away and will send it down the ice
- 2:53Speaker 7: for his team-leading.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Sixth of the season and the Seattle Crockett with a
- 2:58Speaker 2: two-goal lead, 5-3. Man, who didn't score in that montage?
- 3:04Speaker 2: Everett Fitch, you needed a throat loss.
- 3:06Speaker 3: You're all hauls after that one.
- 3:07Speaker 4: He was put to work last night.
- 3:09Speaker 11: He was.
- 3:09Speaker 2: A lot of horns.
- 3:10Speaker 3: A lot of fairy horns at the arena last night.
- 3:14Speaker 6: 5-3.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Your Kraken win. Seven wins in 11 games to start
- 3:18Speaker 2: the season again. Minnesota tomorrow night. They got a homestand coming.
- 3:21Speaker 2: They got Toronto coming in next week as well. Good
- 3:25Speaker 2: job for the Kraken getting a good start. Kraken fans
- 3:27Speaker 2: get on board. Huskies aren't doing anything. Seahawks are 3-3.
- 3:31Speaker 2: How about the Kraken?
- 3:32Speaker 3: Let's do that. We won't mention your Huskies yet.
- 3:35Speaker 4: My Huskies.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I mean your Cougars.
- 3:37Speaker 4: I'm like, excuse me.
- 3:38Speaker 5: Sorry.
- 3:39Speaker 3: The look said a lot. The look said a lot.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Your Cougars.
- 3:42Speaker 4: It is our station. They are our station. They are.
- 3:44Speaker 4: And I respect that and everything.
- 3:46Speaker 2: But, yep.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Nope. What I saw last week was some hope. But
- 3:51Speaker 4: they are going up a formidable opponent.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Eshelman tomorrow is going to get his second consecutive start
- 3:56Speaker 2: for the Cougs. They play 21st ranked Boise State 3 p.m.
- 3:59Speaker 2: at Martin Stadium. Our Jessamyn McIntyre will be there on
- 4:01Speaker 2: the sidelines for Washington State's radio network. The Washington Huskies
- 4:04Speaker 2: are off. They're going to give everyone a chance to
- 4:07Speaker 2: guess who they're going to have a quarterback next week.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I heard Rick Neuheisel. I heard a bunch of people
- 4:11Speaker 2: say it should be Elijah Brown and not the $ 4
- 4:14Speaker 2: million man, DeMond Williams, at Nebraska on Halloween night next week.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Bye for the Huskies.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Tonight, World Series. Tampa Bay, Milwaukee. Game one tonight. Milwaukee,
- 4:25Speaker 3: Tampa Bay.
- 4:25Speaker 2: First World Series since 1980. Royals-Phillies that both teams have
- 4:30Speaker 2: not won at all before.
- 4:31Speaker 3: That's pretty cool.
- 4:32Speaker 2: And another big Friday night in high school football across
- 4:34Speaker 2: the state tonight. Unbeaten Puyallup against one loss, Emerald Ridge
- 4:38Speaker 2: down south. Out on the plateau, Bellevue and Mount Sai
- 4:41Speaker 2: for first place in the King Co. Crown South. I'm
- 4:44Speaker 2: going to be at Popkini Stadium officiating North Creek and Woodinville.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Battle of second place teams in the King Co. Crown North.
- 4:50Speaker 2: And in the Tri-Cities, Chawana plays Kennewick. We have our
- 4:54Speaker 2: high school football showcase coming up at 11 o'clock. Now
- 4:56Speaker 2: on with the Friday show. As part of our relentless
- 4:59Speaker 2: coverage of the NFL.
- 5:01Speaker 6: This is football.
- 5:02Speaker 2: This is football.
- 5:03Speaker 1: This is a Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday.
- 5:07Speaker 2: This crowd is going nuts.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Football Fridays are brought to you by Washington's Beef Farmers
- 5:13Speaker 1: and Ranchers. Beef, it's what's for dinner. It's Football Friday
- 5:18Speaker 1: with Greg Bell on your home for the NFL.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
- 5:29Speaker 2: All right, you have something to pick with Ensign Sarah Bell.
- 5:31Speaker 2: She's home, back on the mainland. She's probably listening for
- 5:36Speaker 2: Return of the Mack right now.
- 5:37Speaker 4: We will get it in.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Blame the Washington State Beef Commission.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Well, we love the Washington State Beef Commission.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Ensign Bell has a beef with the Beef Commission for
- 5:45Speaker 2: no Mark Morrison. Well, double the beef.
- 5:48Speaker 4: There we go.
- 5:48Speaker 2: She has double the reason to be beefing with the
- 5:51Speaker 2: Beef Commission because she's a vegetarian, as is her mother.
- 5:53Speaker 6: Okay.
- 5:54Speaker 4: Well, I think that there's a lot of extremely successful
- 5:58Speaker 4: Beef Commission people in this state, and they do— really
- 6:02Speaker 4: support us on these Fridays. So I appreciate that.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Patel on the party line.
- 6:07Speaker 3: She won't even budge for a vegetarian.
- 6:08Speaker 2: For my daughter.
- 6:10Speaker 4: I don't eat beef either. However, I know a lot
- 6:12Speaker 4: of people do, and this is a Washington state beef
- 6:15Speaker 4: commission Friday, and I appreciate their support to our station.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Man, it's just a company gal. Can't even stray from
- 6:22Speaker 3: the company line.
- 6:23Speaker 2: It's true.
- 6:24Speaker 4: I do appreciate it. I don't even eat beef. I
- 6:26Speaker 4: don't eat beef. I don't eat pork. However, I do
- 6:30Speaker 4: know that a lot of people in this state and
- 6:32Speaker 4: a lot of people, especially in the more rural areas,
- 6:36Speaker 4: live their livelihoods on that.
- 6:37Speaker 12: That's it.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Okay.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Pit me against the rural farmers and people on the ranchers. Okay.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Thank you. Appreciate that, Jessamyn.
- 6:43Speaker 4: You picked the fight, man.
- 6:44Speaker 3: I'm going to support my daughter and my wife.
- 6:46Speaker 2: I'm just saying they're listening for Mark Morrison, Return of
- 6:48Speaker 2: the Mac at 10 o'clock, and they are somewhat adrift
- 6:51Speaker 2: right now. That's all.
- 6:53Speaker 3: That's the only point I'm making.
- 6:54Speaker 4: We will get Return of the Mac back in. Okay.
- 6:56Speaker 3: You heard Jessamyn promise it. Text line.
- 6:59Speaker 5: You heard her. It's coming.
- 7:01Speaker 2: It is a Washington State Beef Commission Football Friday brought
- 7:04Speaker 2: to you by Washington's Beef Farmers and Ranchers. Beef, it's
- 7:06Speaker 2: what's for dinner unless you're in the Bell household and
- 7:09Speaker 2: your wife went to CU Boulder and your kids were
- 7:12Speaker 2: born in Berkeley.
- 7:13Speaker 4: I'm the daughter of a vegetarian as well.
- 7:16Speaker 3: You survived.
- 7:17Speaker 12: Yes.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I somehow have as well. Good morning, ma'am.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Good morning.
- 7:23Speaker 2: How are we?
- 7:24Speaker 4: It's been a long week. What has been the most
- 7:26Speaker 4: treacherous time of your week? I can't wait to hear
- 7:28Speaker 4: about this Zach Charbonnet conversation you had in the locker room.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Most treacherous? That was not it. Although Zach Charbonnet does
- 7:34Speaker 2: not like to talk to the media. It's not that
- 7:35Speaker 2: he's a mean guy.
- 7:36Speaker 4: No, he's just quiet.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Yeah, he just doesn't like to do it. He just
- 7:39Speaker 2: doesn't have a whole lot to say, doesn't expound on
- 7:41Speaker 2: a whole lot. You'll hear at 1020, he actually expounded
- 7:46Speaker 2: more than he usually does.
- 7:48Speaker 3: But I think he just was checking the block. All right,
- 7:50Speaker 3: I'm back. I'm on the active roster. Okay, I'll do this.
- 7:54Speaker 2: And we went in the little hallway right outside the
- 7:55Speaker 2: locker room and talked.
- 7:56Speaker 3: To him for about six, seven minutes. That's an extensive interview.
- 8:00Speaker 4: For him, especially because it wasn't a press conference. It
- 8:03Speaker 4: was a locker room conversation. And that also usually tends
- 8:07Speaker 4: to be shorter.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Correct.
- 8:09Speaker 4: But I can tell you it's exactly six minutes and
- 8:11Speaker 4: 47 seconds.
- 8:12Speaker 3: That's like a 60-minute expose for Zach Sharman.
- 8:15Speaker 6: For him, yeah.
- 8:16Speaker 3: I mean, that is a long time.
- 8:17Speaker 4: I never shade guys for not being comfortable doing it.
- 8:20Speaker 5: No.
- 8:20Speaker 2: And like I said, it's not that he's mean or rude.
- 8:23Speaker 2: He just doesn't like to do it.
- 8:24Speaker 4: No, some guys shy away. I mean, if you've ever
- 8:26Speaker 4: heard Devin Witherspoon on the field versus him being at
- 8:30Speaker 4: a podium, you would know that.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Witherspoon doesn't like to do it either.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 8:35Speaker 3: He doesn't.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Just a little bit short, but that doesn't reflect on
- 8:39Speaker 4: their character or them as a player.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker is very soft-spoken, although I found it interesting
- 8:45Speaker 2: this week when Sam McDowell, the Kansas City star, Chiefs writer,
- 8:49Speaker 2: Did you catch him tell us there's a Friday, weekly
- 8:51Speaker 2: Friday press conference with Kenneth Walker?
- 8:54Speaker 3: I was like, what?
- 8:56Speaker 4: He's their shining star.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Yeah, he is. And there's a lot of demand for him.
- 8:59Speaker 2: But I was thinking he never did that here. You
- 9:01Speaker 2: had to go pry him out of his locker if
- 9:03Speaker 2: you want to talk. It's not that he didn't want
- 9:05Speaker 2: to talk. It's just, I mean, like, it's not that
- 9:07Speaker 2: he wouldn't talk, I should say. But he preferred not to.
- 9:10Speaker 4: Right. But he's their star. And I think that when
- 9:13Speaker 4: guys come to that level, like they did the same
- 9:15Speaker 4: thing with Russell Wilson out here, when guys are in that.
- 9:19Speaker 4: specific category, obviously, famously, they didn't do it with Marchand.
- 9:23Speaker 4: But when guys are the height of a national spotlight,
- 9:26Speaker 4: it makes it easier for the player to have a
- 9:28Speaker 4: designated time. He knows when he's going to have to speak.
- 9:32Speaker 4: And I mean, look at him right now. The only
- 9:35Speaker 4: time he had to do that was at the Super
- 9:37Speaker 4: Bowl when it came to the Seahawks.
- 9:38Speaker 7: Correct.
- 9:39Speaker 3: That's the only time every player is forced. I never
- 9:41Speaker 3: had a problem with Marchand.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Never. I have told the story before. I officiated his
- 9:46Speaker 2: games when he was at Oakland Tech before he got
- 9:47Speaker 2: to Cal. And My home was about a mile and
- 9:51Speaker 2: a half from where his home was in North Oakland.
- 9:53Speaker 2: And I never, when he was with the Seahawks, we chatted,
- 9:58Speaker 2: just chatted off the record and talked about it.
- 10:01Speaker 3: But I never had a problem with him.
- 10:02Speaker 2: It was some people in this market who would call
- 10:05Speaker 2: the NFL and yell and scream about, hey, he's not talking.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Most of the time, the trouble was when we went
- 10:09Speaker 2: on road games.
- 10:10Speaker 4: It was national and road.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Correct. The national writers would come to Kansas City or
- 10:14Speaker 2: Buffalo or Charlotte or Philadelphia and he wouldn't talk.
- 10:17Speaker 3: And they would just affront it.
- 10:19Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 10:20Speaker 3: And they go call the NFL. Yeah. And it was like,
- 10:23Speaker 3: that's when the NFL would start complaining.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Well, they had to with reports coming in. The NFL
- 10:30Speaker 4: had to do that. I had a very good friend,
- 10:33Speaker 4: still have him, but who was in a position that
- 10:36Speaker 4: he's not in anymore. Very high ranking when it came
- 10:39Speaker 4: to the league. And I just remember him going crazy.
- 10:41Speaker 4: I really don't want to tell Marshawn he can't wear
- 10:44Speaker 4: those gold shoes tonight. But he didn't want to do it,
- 10:48Speaker 4: but he had to because there's rules and regulations and
- 10:52Speaker 4: you have to make yourself available to the media in
- 10:54Speaker 4: Marshawn's position. And it was only all the local people
- 10:58Speaker 4: knew it. But all those guys, you and women who
- 11:02Speaker 4: cover the team every day were like, no, don't bother.
- 11:04Speaker 4: He doesn't want to talk.
- 11:05Speaker 3: I had 52 other people I could talk to.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Yes.
- 11:08Speaker 3: And I told him that all the time. I'm like, yeah,
- 11:09Speaker 3: we're cool. That's fine.
- 11:11Speaker 2: And yeah, but some people made a much bigger deal
- 11:14Speaker 2: out of it than I. I already see on the
- 11:16Speaker 2: text line, no, I'm not disrespecting the 206N. Wow, Greg,
- 11:20Speaker 2: no respect for us Central Washington farmers and ranchers.
- 11:23Speaker 4: That was in jest.
- 11:25Speaker 2: JK. I'm hip enough to know what JK means, but barely.
- 11:29Speaker 2: But no, obviously not. I'm just making more fun out
- 11:33Speaker 2: of the fact that I have a vegetarian wife and
- 11:35Speaker 2: a vegetarian daughter and that she loves Return of the Mack.
- 11:37Speaker 2: And she might have tuned in at 10 o'clock expecting
- 11:39Speaker 2: to hear it, but you didn't hear it.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Stay tuned, Sarah.
- 11:41Speaker 2: We're going to get it in for you. I hear
- 11:44Speaker 2: the 206 saying, get your daughter in the studio. The
- 11:46Speaker 2: last place she probably wants to be right now in
- 11:48Speaker 2: her two days of leave before she has to go
- 11:50Speaker 2: back to Coast Guard duty.
- 11:52Speaker 3: To be in the radio station with me with.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Dad that's fair she'll get you at home yes.
- 11:59Speaker 2: That's funny but that would be a kick actually she's
- 12:02Speaker 2: very glib she's very out she's like her mother she's
- 12:05Speaker 2: conversational she's.
- 12:06Speaker 4: Great I've met both of them and have had a
- 12:08Speaker 4: great I've met your.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Whole family yeah that's true all.
- 12:10Speaker 4: At separate times too that's true yes.
- 12:13Speaker 3: You've seen her Sarah in a very army navy.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Setting in fact in Boston so yeah in Washington I
- 12:19Speaker 2: think but yeah uh Sarah Bell's home.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Ensign Sarah Bell.
- 12:24Speaker 4: How has it been?
- 12:25Speaker 2: I picked her up at 6 o'clock this morning.
- 12:28Speaker 4: Oh, so you haven't had time yet.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I was at SeaTac and back already.
- 12:32Speaker 3: By the way, SeaTac Airport at 5.45 a.m. is a
- 12:35Speaker 3: whole different experience.
- 12:36Speaker 2: It's all right.
- 12:37Speaker 4: It is so nice to be on the first plane.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Out of any airport. This is how a normal airport operates.
- 12:43Speaker 3: How about that? No delays, no traffic.
- 12:46Speaker 2: This is okay.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Smooth flow.
- 12:48Speaker 4: Every flight is the first flight out, so there was
- 12:50Speaker 4: no chance for delays.
- 12:52Speaker 2: On the show today, we're going to talk about Zach Charbonnet.
- 12:55Speaker 3: He is back.
- 12:56Speaker 2: He did talk about his contract when I asked him
- 12:58Speaker 2: about it yesterday, because to me, there's an urgency here
- 13:01Speaker 2: that kind of is a dichotomy of what he actually is.
- 13:04Speaker 2: He's in a situation where the team wants him to
- 13:06Speaker 2: ramp up slowly because he hasn't been playing for nine months,
- 13:10Speaker 2: and he had reconstructive knee surgery eight months ago. He
- 13:12Speaker 2: just had his full practices this week. It would be
- 13:15Speaker 2: somewhat malpractice to give him the ball 20, 25 times
- 13:18Speaker 2: on Sunday night, wouldn't it? So the Seahawks have a
- 13:21Speaker 2: plan for him, a ramp-up plan, and Charbonnet talks about
- 13:25Speaker 2: the patience he needs to show in that. Yet, opposite
- 13:28Speaker 2: of that is the fact he has only 11 games left,
- 13:30Speaker 2: 11 auditions left in his contract in the regular season.
- 13:34Speaker 2: for when he needs to find a new deal, whether
- 13:36Speaker 2: that's in Seattle or elsewhere. The Seahawks have to have
- 13:39Speaker 2: a decision on whether they want to bring him back,
- 13:40Speaker 2: and their history says no, that they don't often give contracts,
- 13:44Speaker 2: second contracts, beyond the rookie ones. And Jadarian Price is here.
- 13:47Speaker 2: They drafted him, and they've got his rights for four
- 13:49Speaker 2: more years after this one, counting a 50-year option if
- 13:52Speaker 2: they want to exercise it. The point is, time is
- 13:55Speaker 2: now for Zach Charbonnet, yet he can't just run out
- 13:59Speaker 2: there like it never happened, or else he may not
- 14:01Speaker 2: last into the end of the season. So, There is
- 14:04Speaker 2: a push and pull there that I asked him about,
- 14:06Speaker 2: and you'll hear his answer at a little bit after
- 14:09Speaker 2: 1025 or so. 11 o'clock, we're going to talk live
- 14:13Speaker 2: to Bellevue coach Michael Kniep. Former Huskies Washington offensive lineman,
- 14:17Speaker 2: by the way, and a Bellevue high grad himself. And
- 14:20Speaker 2: to Mountside coach Don Bartle. Those two first-place teams in
- 14:23Speaker 2: the King Co. South Division, the King Co. Crown Division
- 14:27Speaker 2: in the South Side. are meeting each other tonight at
- 14:29Speaker 2: Mount Sinai High School in Snoqualmie. It's two Battle of
- 14:32Speaker 2: Six and One teams, 4-0 in the conference.
- 14:35Speaker 3: That's our weekly high school showcase game.
- 14:36Speaker 2: I know there are all kinds of big games around
- 14:38Speaker 2: the state, and I've mentioned a couple of them. As
- 14:41Speaker 2: every Friday and Friday night tonight, as he does every
- 14:43Speaker 2: Friday night, Dick Fane will have.
- 14:45Speaker 3: His high school football live show with scores and calling.
- 14:49Speaker 2: It's pretty cool. I've listened to it on my way
- 14:50Speaker 2: back from officiating games, and he calls people that he
- 14:53Speaker 2: knows and writers and radio people from across the state
- 14:57Speaker 2: who are at the stadiums. At games in Kennewick and
- 15:01Speaker 2: Spokane and Wenatchee and Bellingham. It's cool. And get first
- 15:06Speaker 2: person on the scene. Here's what happened tonight. And here's
- 15:08Speaker 2: what it means for the rest of the league. And
- 15:09Speaker 2: here's who can make the playoffs. That's at 10 o'clock
- 15:11Speaker 2: tonight on 93.3 KJR. And then at 1130, we'll read
- 15:15Speaker 2: back your text. The Tacoma Dodge text line 49451, of
- 15:18Speaker 2: which I've read a couple already for Ensign Bell.
- 15:21Speaker 3: And the talkbacks. Go to the iHeartRadio app, 933KJR, or
- 15:24Speaker 3: our website, 933KJR. com. Jessamyn will play back. She loves playing back.
- 15:30Speaker 3: I really do.
- 15:31Speaker 4: And also get your voice heard. I mean, everyone has
- 15:33Speaker 4: opinions out here. It's just 30 seconds and it's on
- 15:36Speaker 4: the app. And what I like to do is include
- 15:39Speaker 4: people in the show instead of our voices reading your text.
- 15:42Speaker 4: And maybe you can only text. But what I really
- 15:45Speaker 4: love is hearing the other voices that make up our
- 15:48Speaker 4: entire listenership and getting the different opinions. And sometimes people
- 15:53Speaker 4: get a little extra creative and I like to reward
- 15:55Speaker 4: them for their creativity. Because I couldn't come up with
- 15:58Speaker 4: some of that stuff.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Yes, exactly. I tease Jess when it's a little bar,
- 16:03Speaker 2: but she just likes to have voices on her.
- 16:05Speaker 4: I like our listeners. That's what it is, Greg.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Again, it's not that I don't. Now you've pitted me
- 16:11Speaker 2: against the ranchers and the listeners.
- 16:13Speaker 4: You just took it that way.
- 16:14Speaker 2: My apologies to Mount Sai. It is Don Bartel. I
- 16:19Speaker 2: mispronounced his name when speaking. Bartel, like the drugstore. That's
- 16:23Speaker 2: been doing it for a long time out on I
- 16:26Speaker 2: had his game a couple weeks ago in Eastlake, and
- 16:28Speaker 2: they beat him 29-7. They have a big team that
- 16:30Speaker 2: can throw the ball, Mount Sai. An unusual combination of
- 16:33Speaker 2: size and being able to spread teams out. That's what
- 16:37Speaker 2: goes against Bellevue tonight. Bellevue, I've had them, and they
- 16:40Speaker 2: are good.
- 16:41Speaker 4: Aren't they traditionally very, very— Oh, yeah.
- 16:43Speaker 2: They're a state powerhouse in 3A. The 3A finalists that
- 16:46Speaker 2: lost to O'Day last year. Mike Benton and I called
- 16:49Speaker 2: that game at Husky Stadium, the 3A final. But they're—
- 16:53Speaker 2: Faster than they were last year, and I think they're
- 16:56Speaker 2: cleaner on the line of scrimmage. When I had them,
- 16:59Speaker 2: they played Lyndon Christian. Kudos to Lyndon Christian for stepping
- 17:02Speaker 2: up and playing Bellevue. But they were just bigger, faster,
- 17:06Speaker 2: stronger than I remember Bellevue being last year. I had
- 17:08Speaker 2: Bellevue and Skyline last year, one of the better games
- 17:11Speaker 2: I've had in years officiating. But, yeah, Bellevue has lost
- 17:15Speaker 2: one time, and it was down in Puyallup. And kudos
- 17:21Speaker 2: to them, two state powers going at it. And Mount
- 17:25Speaker 2: Si lost to Tumwater, another perennial state power down on
- 17:28Speaker 2: the Olympia South Sound. So big game tonight on the
- 17:32Speaker 2: plateau in Snoqualmie. Mount Si and Bellevue High School. And
- 17:35Speaker 2: that's our high school feature game. We'll do it at
- 17:38Speaker 2: 11 o'clock. 11.35, Factor Fiction. We do that every day
- 17:41Speaker 2: at that time. Your chance to win $ 1, 000 from the
- 17:43Speaker 2: Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. My pick today, I think
- 17:47Speaker 2: I'm staying on the campus.
- 17:48Speaker 3: I think.
- 17:49Speaker 5: Okay.
- 17:50Speaker 3: I haven't totally decided, but. You're right. When you get
- 17:52Speaker 3: to this point in the week, the NFL games are picking.
- 17:54Speaker 4: It's been picking.
- 17:55Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 17:55Speaker 2: I heard, I think it was Dick or Jackson, I
- 17:59Speaker 2: think it was Dick Fane yesterday, pick against your Jets,
- 18:02Speaker 2: Dolphins pick, went opposite.
- 18:04Speaker 4: Well, then one of us is going to fight the other.
- 18:07Speaker 2: He said the Jets should never be favored over anybody
- 18:10Speaker 2: by four and a half points. That was Dick Fane's reasoning.
- 18:12Speaker 4: Well, fine, Dick. I'm okay. Yeah, you're right. It was him.
- 18:17Speaker 4: It was Dick.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Hmm.
- 18:19Speaker 6: Okay.
- 18:20Speaker 2: He took the Dolphins plus four and a half. Jessamyn
- 18:22Speaker 2: took yesterday her hometown Jets minus four and a half.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Long Island pick as it is.
- 18:26Speaker 4: He just picked a team that he thought was due.
- 18:30Speaker 2: They are due.
- 18:31Speaker 4: However, that is a little bit of a larger spread.
- 18:35Speaker 4: It's not a minus three or something like that. So
- 18:38Speaker 4: I do get his logic. But we are in fighting
- 18:42Speaker 4: words right now.
- 18:43Speaker 2: We are.
- 18:44Speaker 7: Yep.
- 18:44Speaker 2: The winless Dolphins who have scored 70 points in five games.
- 18:48Speaker 2: 70 points to five. I didn't watch much of that
- 18:51Speaker 2: Bears game last night. It was on the background of
- 18:53Speaker 2: a place I was at. But they look like they
- 18:56Speaker 2: won comfortably. And then New England scored at the very
- 18:59Speaker 2: end to make it close. And I saw an onside
- 19:01Speaker 2: kick to Patriots, so I'm up for it.
- 19:02Speaker 3: But Caleb Williams is back.
- 19:04Speaker 2: He looks healthy, which means that is a much more
- 19:06Speaker 2: formidable test with Caleb Williams than without.
- 19:08Speaker 11: Yep.
- 19:09Speaker 2: When the Seahawks get them a week from Monday. And
- 19:11Speaker 2: we've mentioned it, the Bears are now 5-2. So you
- 19:14Speaker 2: have to look down the line here. The Seahawks' chances
- 19:17Speaker 2: of winning the NFC West are pretty low right now, honestly.
- 19:20Speaker 2: The way the 49ers have gone up right away. I mean,
- 19:24Speaker 2: three and a half games up, basically.
- 19:26Speaker 4: But, like we've said, the alternative in a wildcard situation
- 19:30Speaker 4: might be fortuitous.
- 19:31Speaker 2: That's what I was about to mention. That's why the Bears'
- 19:34Speaker 2: 5-2 record is of some interest here. Because that's who
- 19:37Speaker 2: the Seahawks are. One of the teams they'll be vying
- 19:39Speaker 2: for wildcard position if they can win, get themselves straight
- 19:43Speaker 2: on offense. The Seahawks are 3-3.
- 19:44Speaker 3: The Bears are now 5-2.
- 19:45Speaker 11: Chicago, Green Bay, Detroit.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Are all lumped at that 4-2, 5-2 level. And right now,
- 19:54Speaker 2: Minnesota's 5-0, but barely scoring points. So people think the
- 19:57Speaker 2: Vikings are going to come back to the rest of
- 19:59Speaker 2: the NFC North, but And Jessamyn's point is the wild
- 20:02Speaker 2: card will play the first round game at either the
- 20:05Speaker 2: NFC South winner or the NFC East winner, which is basically.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Like a bye week. I mean, those two teams are
- 20:10Speaker 3: not going to be good.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Either one.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Giants, Falcons, Panthers.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Panthers could be dangerous, but I'd take Seattle over any
- 20:19Speaker 2: of those teams on the road in the first round.
- 20:21Speaker 2: And then you've got a second round matchup, and that's
- 20:23Speaker 2: where the problem begins because you're probably going to run
- 20:24Speaker 2: into San Francisco in round two as the top seed
- 20:28Speaker 2: playing the wild card winner.
- 20:29Speaker 1: But.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Suffice to say that the Bears, the Lions, and the
- 20:34Speaker 2: Packers are of some interest to Seattle right now, and
- 20:36Speaker 2: the Seahawks get Chicago after the Chiefs come in here
- 20:39Speaker 2: on Sunday night, which is no sure layup for the
- 20:41Speaker 2: Seahawks either, obviously, the undefeated Chiefs. And Kenneth Walker. We've
- 20:45Speaker 2: been talking about Kenneth Walker all week. The Seahawks have
- 20:48Speaker 2: his job share partner from last year coming back to
- 20:51Speaker 2: their lineup this weekend. How much is Zach Charbonnet going
- 20:54Speaker 2: to play? How many carries is he going to have?
- 20:56Speaker 2: What's he ready for? How's he feeling health-wise nine months
- 20:59Speaker 2: after his knee ligaments tear in a playoff game? And
- 21:03Speaker 2: what's he expect? You'll hear from Zach Charbonnet next. 11 o'clock,
- 21:07Speaker 2: our high school football showcase. All that's coming up on
- 21:09Speaker 2: a Washington State Beat Commission football Friday on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Now back to the Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday
- 21:30Speaker 1: with Greg Bell on your home for the NFL. Sports
- 21:34Speaker 1: Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
- 21:35Speaker 4: You know I wouldn't disappoint her.
- 21:43Speaker 3: I hope Ensign Bell is listening. She might be taking
- 21:46Speaker 3: a nap.
- 21:47Speaker 2: She was on a red-eye from Honolulu last night.
- 21:49Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 21:50Speaker 4: Well, she can listen to the podcast.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Mark Morrison, return of the MAAC. 93.3 KJFM.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Greg Bell, Jessamyn McIntyre with you on a Washington State
- 21:59Speaker 2: Beef Commission Football Friday. Another big Football Friday. High school
- 22:02Speaker 2: football taking center stage tonight.
- 22:04Speaker 3: In our state.
- 22:05Speaker 2: The Huskies are off after consecutive Friday games the last
- 22:08Speaker 2: two weeks. The Cougs play tomorrow at home in Pullman.
- 22:11Speaker 2: The Army team, the Pride and Dreams.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Play tonight.
- 22:13Speaker 2: 5.30 kickoff our time at Pulsa, that's a fact or
- 22:16Speaker 2: fiction pick of ours.
- 22:18Speaker 3: Yeah, you know I picked for Army, of course.
- 22:20Speaker 8: Shocking.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Yeah, stunner there.
- 22:23Speaker 2: And then tomorrow, I said that college scene, locally it's
- 22:27Speaker 2: the Cougs. Sunday, of course, you have to wait until
- 22:29Speaker 2: Sunday night to get the Seahawks. 5-15 at Lumen Field.
- 22:33Speaker 2: They're playing the Kansas City Chiefs, unbeaten at 5-0. The
- 22:37Speaker 2: Seahawks yesterday put Zach Charbonnet on the active roster for
- 22:40Speaker 2: the first time since he ripped out his knee in
- 22:43Speaker 2: mid-January in the divisional playoff game against San Francisco at
- 22:46Speaker 2: Lumen Field. He had surgery on February 12th, reconstructive knee surgery.
- 22:51Speaker 2: And since that time, he's been on the physically unable
- 22:53Speaker 2: to perform list until now. He is now cleared to play,
- 22:56Speaker 2: and it looks like the season debut will come against
- 22:57Speaker 2: the Chiefs on Sunday night.
- 23:00Speaker 3: They need him.
- 23:01Speaker 2: This offense and this running game, we're going to give
- 23:03Speaker 2: you some numbers in the next segment about the outside
- 23:05Speaker 2: zone game with Jadarian Price on injured reserve, and it
- 23:09Speaker 2: is bleak.
- 23:10Speaker 3: And meanwhile, Kenneth Walker is romping. all over the heartland
- 23:13Speaker 3: for the Chiefs.
- 23:15Speaker 2: What will Zach Chardonnay be able to do on Sunday?
- 23:17Speaker 2: What's he expecting? What about his contract ending? This was
- 23:19Speaker 2: the running back yesterday outside the locker room at Seahawks headquarters.
- 23:23Speaker 9: How do you feel right now?
- 23:24Speaker 6: I'm feeling pretty good.
- 23:26Speaker 10: I'm going a day at a time, just seeing how
- 23:40Speaker 10: it adapts with picking up practice, stuff like that.
- 23:43Speaker 14: Your coach said you had a pretty audacious goal when
- 23:45Speaker 14: you got hurt to come back.
- 23:47Speaker 5: What was that goal? How soon did you set the
- 23:49Speaker 5: time to get back?
- 23:51Speaker 10: Yeah, I wouldn't say I had, like, any timeline, like,
- 23:56Speaker 10: set in stone, you know? But I did want to
- 23:58Speaker 10: be pretty aggressive in my rehab and stuff like that, so.
- 24:02Speaker 9: Yeah, just whenever I felt good, but try to get
- 24:04Speaker 9: back as fast as I can.
- 24:05Speaker 2: What do you think has allowed you to, you're only
- 24:07Speaker 2: eight months from surgery, you're knocking on the door, you're back.
- 24:09Speaker 9: What do you think has allowed you to recover this quickly?
- 24:12Speaker 10: Yeah, I think, you know, just the team I've had
- 24:15Speaker 10: around me and all the rehab and the work I've
- 24:17Speaker 10: put in and also all the effort and.
- 24:20Speaker 9: The other people I've put into me too.
- 24:22Speaker 10: That's really allowed me to dial in on my plan
- 24:26Speaker 10: and to get it rolling.
- 24:27Speaker 4: So yeah.
- 24:28Speaker 8: After the last eight months, what is it going to
- 24:30Speaker 8: be like for you on Sunday, putting that jersey on
- 24:32Speaker 8: and being on the field?
- 24:35Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean, like I said, just taking it in
- 24:37Speaker 10: a day at a time. But, you know, whenever I'm
- 24:38Speaker 10: out there, it's going to be special. I'm just going
- 24:40Speaker 10: to be happy to get back out there.
- 24:42Speaker 2: What was the toughest part of this entire process? You know,
- 24:45Speaker 2: obviously you're back faster than a lot of guys would be,
- 24:47Speaker 2: but what was the toughest part in this long rehab period?
- 24:51Speaker 9: Yeah, I think just being patient.
- 24:56Speaker 10: Obviously, it's still eight months, you know, so being patient
- 24:58Speaker 10: and just trusting in the plan and what that set
- 25:01Speaker 10: up for me.
- 25:02Speaker 9: And, yeah, just attacking on it.
- 25:03Speaker 5: How do you make Sunday not bigger than it is
- 25:05Speaker 5: as just part.
- 25:05Speaker 12: Of the process of your rehab, you know what I mean,
- 25:07Speaker 12: attacking it, getting back on the field?
- 25:12Speaker 4: Well, is it?
- 25:13Speaker 5: Maybe it is that.
- 25:14Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean, it's my fourth year, so I don't
- 25:18Speaker 10: make anything too big, bigger than it is. You know,
- 25:20Speaker 10: so I'm just happy to get back out there with
- 25:23Speaker 10: my guys. That's really what I'm focused on. but yeah,
- 25:26Speaker 10: it'll be, it'll be cool.
- 25:29Speaker 5: And it's the home crowd, so that's got to add
- 25:32Speaker 5: to it.
- 25:33Speaker 9: Yeah, for sure. Is there a moment or a point
- 25:35Speaker 9: where you, at a stage in your rehab where you realized, hey,
- 25:40Speaker 9: I'm really making progress, I'm able to do this, I'm
- 25:43Speaker 9: able to cut, I'm able to accelerate, whatever it might
- 25:46Speaker 9: be that led you to think, hey, I might be
- 25:49Speaker 9: able to get back this quick.
- 25:50Speaker 10: Um, I mean, I wouldn't say so. I mean, I
- 25:54Speaker 10: kind of have to plan in mind, like, right after
- 25:56Speaker 10: surgery anyways, you know. Obviously all that stuff comes into account,
- 26:00Speaker 10: seeing how I'm feeling, like, during my progression and stuff
- 26:02Speaker 10: like that. But yeah, I mean, I felt good throughout
- 26:06Speaker 10: it all. I mean, just trusting God and the people
- 26:08Speaker 10: around me.
- 26:10Speaker 5: What was the date of the surgery?
- 26:13Speaker 9: February 12th. 12? And who was it? Was it Dr. Calvino?
- 26:21Speaker 6: No.
- 26:22Speaker 4: Was it.
- 26:23Speaker 13: Hard watching the NFC title, Super Bowl, things like that
- 26:27Speaker 13: from the sidelines?
- 26:29Speaker 10: Man, I mean, yeah, obviously the injury was tough, but,
- 26:31Speaker 10: you know, it was just fun to be out there,
- 26:33Speaker 10: you know, and just watch the team go out there
- 26:35Speaker 10: and do.
- 26:36Speaker 9: What they did. So it was special to be a
- 26:38Speaker 9: part of that.
- 26:38Speaker 5: This is a contract year for you.
- 26:40Speaker 14: How does that add to the urgency of getting back
- 26:42Speaker 14: and then maybe not trying to do too much when
- 26:44Speaker 14: you are back?
- 26:45Speaker 9: Honestly, I really haven't thought about it like that.
- 26:48Speaker 10: To be honest, I just want to get back out
- 26:49Speaker 10: there with the guys that I played with. So that's
- 26:52Speaker 10: really been my only goal.
- 26:54Speaker 8: A lot of times when players are coming back from
- 26:56Speaker 8: significant injuries like this, they say that the last hurdle
- 26:59Speaker 8: is just being able to have the confidence to go
- 27:01Speaker 8: out and be able to get hit.
- 27:03Speaker 5: You obviously haven't.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Gotten hit yet, so.
- 27:05Speaker 5: How are you feeling from that front heading into.
- 27:07Speaker 3: This weekend, your readiness to.
- 27:10Speaker 9: Be able to go out there and get hit by guys?
- 27:12Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean, like I said, I haven't really thought
- 27:15Speaker 10: about that too much. I just trust in God, and
- 27:18Speaker 10: at some point, you just got to take the step forward.
- 27:20Speaker 10: So I just got to trust in that and trust
- 27:22Speaker 10: in myself and go out there and play as fast
- 27:24Speaker 10: as I can.
- 27:25Speaker 9: What do you remember about the injury itself? What do
- 27:28Speaker 9: you remember about it, getting injured?
- 27:33Speaker 10: I mean, just feeling my knee going down, really. Um,
- 27:36Speaker 10: but yeah, I mean, initially I didn't even think it
- 27:38Speaker 10: was that, so, you know, but yeah, that's what.
- 27:43Speaker 9: This group are.
- 27:44Speaker 5: What was your goal? Are you ahead of it? Are
- 27:46Speaker 5: you ahead of your expectation?
- 27:49Speaker 10: Um, I'll say I'm around, like, where I was thinking.
- 27:52Speaker 5: October?
- 27:53Speaker 10: Yeah, um, mid-October, around there, end of October, so early November, like,
- 27:59Speaker 10: all around.
- 27:59Speaker 2: There, I mean.
- 28:00Speaker 9: It's kind of like a wider range, just because you
- 28:02Speaker 9: never know. But yeah, that's kind of what I'm shooting for.
- 28:05Speaker 13: Are they planning to kind of ease you into things immediately,
- 28:07Speaker 13: or do you know kind of what the plan is.
- 28:09Speaker 5: Initially with you?
- 28:10Speaker 9: Yeah, not really sure, to be honest.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Yeah, yesterday was your first full participation day in practice.
- 28:19Speaker 11: What kind of milestone was that.
- 28:20Speaker 10: For you, just to feel like you're getting close and
- 28:22Speaker 10: getting that extra rep load and all that as you.
- 28:24Speaker 9: Kind of work back into things here?
- 28:26Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean- I think that was just huge from
- 28:28Speaker 10: maybe my knee, just from my body in general, you know,
- 28:30Speaker 10: just because I haven't been doing all the, it's different
- 28:33Speaker 10: from just doing drills to actually going and integrating the
- 28:35Speaker 10: practice and stuff like that. So, yeah, I think it
- 28:38Speaker 10: was an important milestone to get to and to get
- 28:40Speaker 10: more used to and comfortable.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Is it a bigger step going from straight line to
- 28:43Speaker 2: cutting and starting to do the lateral stuff or going
- 28:45Speaker 2: from lateral to football again?
- 28:47Speaker 10: Yeah, definitely the football setting, you know. Yeah, obviously there's
- 28:52Speaker 10: less rest and stuff like that. And then you're going
- 28:54Speaker 10: back to back.
- 28:55Speaker 9: So, yeah, it's definitely a little bit different.
- 28:57Speaker 5: You mentioned that patience is the hardest part. You know,
- 28:59Speaker 5: on the long days where it was hard to be patient,
- 29:02Speaker 5: were there ways that you grounded yourself or things you
- 29:04Speaker 5: told yourself? Or what did you do to be able
- 29:05Speaker 5: to get through some of those hard times?
- 29:07Speaker 9: Yeah, just more rehab, honestly. Just get rehabbing.
- 29:12Speaker 5: Did you do most of that up here in Seattle?
- 29:15Speaker 9: I was kind of between here and L.A., yeah.
- 29:19Speaker 14: How close do you remain with Kenneth Walker? What do
- 29:22Speaker 14: you miss about him? Yeah, I mean, that's my guy.
- 29:26Speaker 14: That's one of my best friends that was here. So, yeah,
- 29:29Speaker 14: we talk pretty often.
- 29:30Speaker 5: What do you miss about him being.
- 29:34Speaker 12: Here?
- 29:34Speaker 9: Just him around the building, talking to him every day
- 29:36Speaker 9: and stuff like that. Yeah, for sure.
- 29:38Speaker 5: What did it mean to you? He wrote your name.
- 29:40Speaker 5: number on, I think, on his tape in the Super Bowl.
- 29:42Speaker 3: When did you notice that, and what did that mean
- 29:44Speaker 3: to you?
- 29:44Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean, it meant a lot. I mean, it
- 29:45Speaker 10: just shows the brotherhood that we have and how close
- 29:48Speaker 10: we are.
- 29:48Speaker 9: Yeah, so I mean, it meant a lot.
- 29:50Speaker 4: You were a pretty even-keeled guy.
- 29:52Speaker 10: Do you anticipate any additional emotion when you get back
- 29:56Speaker 10: out there on the.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Game day again?
- 29:58Speaker 9: No, I stayed. pretty neutral the same. I just be
- 30:01Speaker 9: who I am.
- 30:03Speaker 5: And is it true you're missing the media?
- 30:07Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 30:11Speaker 3: That was Dave Pearson, the Vice President of Communications who
- 30:13Speaker 3: was standing behind us in the hall.
- 30:15Speaker 4: He was having fun with that.
- 30:16Speaker 7: Yes.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Like I said, it's not that Charbonnet is rude or
- 30:19Speaker 2: mean or anything. You can hear it, but he just
- 30:21Speaker 2: would rather not do that.
- 30:22Speaker 4: There's plenty of players out there and you don't hear
- 30:25Speaker 4: from them because of that, but once you're a star,
- 30:27Speaker 4: it's going to happen.
- 30:28Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 30:29Speaker 4: It's a necessary evil.
- 30:31Speaker 2: You heard him say that the Seahawks have a plan
- 30:34Speaker 2: for him, and he's got to be patient and has
- 30:35Speaker 2: had to be patient throughout this process. Mike McDonald said
- 30:38Speaker 2: it was an audacious timeline that Sarbanet had for himself. Normally,
- 30:42Speaker 2: it's an 8- to 12-month recovery for a reconstructive knee,
- 30:45Speaker 2: so easy for me to say.
- 30:46Speaker 3: I've never had one. Jessamyn has. My wife has. They suck. Yeah, exactly.
- 30:51Speaker 2: That's kind of the summation my wife had as well.
- 30:54Speaker 2: And my wife and Jessamyn were not running out on
- 30:56Speaker 2: an NFL field. with 250-pound guys flying at you, trying
- 31:00Speaker 2: to kill you.
- 31:00Speaker 4: No, we were linear people.
- 31:04Speaker 2: So suffice to say, he's not going to get all
- 31:08Speaker 2: the carries he's going to get in this very first
- 31:10Speaker 2: game back. On Sunday night, I was on a Kansas
- 31:13Speaker 2: City radio show this morning, and they asked me, well,
- 31:16Speaker 2: so is he going to start on Sunday? You think
- 31:17Speaker 2: he gets 15, 20? I was like, no, I don't
- 31:20Speaker 2: think that. I don't think that that would be smart
- 31:23Speaker 2: for the Seahawks, nor for Charbonnet. Remember, he's got a
- 31:26Speaker 2: long play here. He's trying to finish out this season
- 31:29Speaker 2: and impress somebody, the Seahawks or otherwise, and he's playing
- 31:33Speaker 2: for a contract next year. I would expect maybe six,
- 31:37Speaker 2: eight carries max. How many carries do you think? How
- 31:40Speaker 2: many are you expecting? 4-9-4-5-1 on the Comodage text line.
- 31:43Speaker 2: What are you expecting from Zach Charbonnet in his debut,
- 31:46Speaker 2: which apparently will come Sunday night. That's not a sure-sure thing,
- 31:49Speaker 2: but they sure need him, and I would think there
- 31:51Speaker 2: would be some role for him. I'm thinking six, eight carries.
- 31:54Speaker 2: The other question I have for you in the text
- 31:56Speaker 2: line is, and I was asked this by Chuck this
- 31:58Speaker 2: morning at 7 o'clock, how many rushing yards do you
- 32:01Speaker 2: believe Kenneth Walker's going to run for Sunday night? He
- 32:03Speaker 2: asked me 75.
- 32:04Speaker 3: A lower or over 75? That was his question to me.
- 32:09Speaker 4: Yards?
- 32:09Speaker 2: Yes.
- 32:10Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:11Speaker 3: I said under because I think the Seahawks, to win
- 32:14Speaker 3: the game, have to do that.
- 32:15Speaker 4: Well, and they also have his number, you know. They
- 32:18Speaker 4: know how to defend against him. Can he run through
- 32:21Speaker 4: their plan, though?
- 32:22Speaker 2: We may play.
- 32:23Speaker 11: I mean.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Send Jessamyn the audio of Byron Murphy yesterday talking about
- 32:28Speaker 2: that very thing, that they know how to tackle Walker
- 32:31Speaker 2: because they did it so much, training camps and practices,
- 32:34Speaker 2: and not actually bring him to ground, but they knew–
- 32:37Speaker 2: I know how he runs. Exactly.
- 32:38Speaker 4: And that's what makes him so unique is the style
- 32:40Speaker 4: of running that he has.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Murphy was making the point of because Walker is so
- 32:44Speaker 2: patient in the backfield waiting for blocks and picking a hole,
- 32:47Speaker 2: the trick is to get up the field vertically, beat
- 32:49Speaker 2: your guy at the line of scrimmage and get up
- 32:51Speaker 2: the field vertically to ruin his vision in rushing lanes,
- 32:54Speaker 2: to give him no options to see those lanes develop
- 32:57Speaker 2: and crash them before the lanes even start.
- 32:59Speaker 3: That's what Murphy's task is on this.
- 33:02Speaker 2: And Sunday night, you know the Chiefs are going to
- 33:04Speaker 2: double-team him, and you know that he's going to drop
- 33:05Speaker 2: to one knee and do that Turkish kettlebell get-up thing
- 33:08Speaker 2: where he punches his fist between two guys.
- 33:12Speaker 3: He's amazing at that.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Watch 91 in royal blue and silver pants on Sunday
- 33:17Speaker 2: night against a double-team. It's really unique how quick and
- 33:20Speaker 2: fast and strong he is to get up off the
- 33:22Speaker 2: ground off one knee.
- 33:23Speaker 3: How many on the Tacoma Dodgers' text line? 4-9, 4-5-1.
- 33:26Speaker 3: How well do you think Mike McDonald's defense is going
- 33:28Speaker 3: to live at the Super Bowl MVP?
- 33:29Speaker 2: 35 straight games the Seahawks have not allowed a 100-yard
- 33:33Speaker 2: rusher dating to the October of Mike McDonald's first season
- 33:36Speaker 2: with the Seahawks when James Cook went for 100-plus with
- 33:40Speaker 2: the Bills here in Seattle. That's the last time. The
- 33:42Speaker 2: very first season McDonald was here. That's the matchup Sunday night.
- 33:46Speaker 2: If you boil it down to how the Seahawks can win,
- 33:49Speaker 2: hold Walker down like no other team has held him
- 33:51Speaker 2: down this year. Make the Chiefs get in third and long,
- 33:56Speaker 2: drop out of under center, and make Mahomes throw when
- 34:00Speaker 2: the Seahawks know he has to throw. And then the
- 34:03Speaker 2: Chiefs will be different than they've been all year. They've
- 34:05Speaker 2: been playing from the front. They haven't trailed. They haven't
- 34:08Speaker 2: been in situations where teams know they have to throw.
- 34:11Speaker 2: And as Sam McDowell told us in front of the
- 34:13Speaker 2: Kansas City Star, they've played really weak teams, honestly. They've
- 34:17Speaker 2: played the Raiders, the Colts, the Chargers. They have beaten
- 34:23Speaker 2: the Broncos, but other than that, they have played weak teams,
- 34:26Speaker 2: and he said this will be their toughest test defensively.
- 34:28Speaker 2: The key to the game, how can they bottle up
- 34:31Speaker 2: and how much will they bottle up Kenneth Walker to
- 34:34Speaker 2: change how Kansas City plays offense? That's the key to
- 34:36Speaker 2: Sunday night's game. My story on that is at 933KGR. com
- 34:40Speaker 2: up right now. Up next, let's go into the numbers
- 34:43Speaker 2: of outside zone to quantify how much the Seahawks are
- 34:47Speaker 2: missing Jadarian Price and how well... Kenneth Walker is doing
- 34:52Speaker 2: it in Kansas City. The numbers are really, really telling.
- 34:55Speaker 2: 11 o'clock, we'll have high school football focus. Bellevue, Mount Si,
- 34:59Speaker 2: the big showdown in Snoqualmie tonight for first place in
- 35:02Speaker 2: their division in the King Co.
- 35:04Speaker 8: Crown.
- 35:04Speaker 2: That's all coming up on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Now back to the Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday
- 35:16Speaker 1: with Greg Bell on your home for the NFL. Sports
- 35:20Speaker 1: Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
- 35:22Speaker 6: Welcome back.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Another big football weekend on 93.3 KJR FM. The Huskies
- 35:37Speaker 2: are off. They're not playing this week. The Cougs play
- 35:39Speaker 2: tomorrow night. 21st ranked Boise State in Pullman, 3 p.m.
- 35:43Speaker 3: Kickoff.
- 35:44Speaker 2: USA Network on television and on Washington State Cougars radio
- 35:47Speaker 2: network that Jessamyn McIntyre will be on the sidelines for.
- 35:50Speaker 2: We've got Kraken coming up tomorrow night at home against
- 35:54Speaker 2: Minnesota here on 93.3 KJRFM. Seven wins in their first
- 35:57Speaker 2: 11 games, the best 11 games start in franchise history.
- 36:00Speaker 2: 7 p.m. puck drop tomorrow night with Everett Fitchew, 6.30 pregame.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Kraken in Minnesota here on 93.3 KJRFM. And then Sunday night,
- 36:09Speaker 2: the Seahawks are hosting the Kansas City Chiefs, the 5-0
- 36:13Speaker 2: Chiefs against the 3-3 Seahawks.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Lumenfield, 5-15 kickoff.
- 36:18Speaker 2: Zach Charbonnet is on the active roster to play, but
- 36:22Speaker 2: I don't think he's going to get more than six
- 36:23Speaker 2: or eight carries, which means that we're going to get
- 36:25Speaker 2: more of Emmanuel Wilson, the supposed short yardage running back
- 36:29Speaker 2: who has been cast into a role he wasn't supposed
- 36:31Speaker 2: to be here for when they signed him from Green
- 36:33Speaker 2: Bay this offseason. It means more of George Helani, who's
- 36:37Speaker 2: really a special teams player and a third-down blocking back.
- 36:42Speaker 2: And it means that Kenneth Walker is coming in as
- 36:44Speaker 2: the NFL's leading rusher, 665 yards, which is more rushing
- 36:49Speaker 2: yards than any Seahawks. The total Seahawks rushing, there's been
- 36:53Speaker 2: nine guys carry the ball this year for Seattle. In
- 36:56Speaker 2: six games, they have fewer yards combined than one Kenneth
- 36:59Speaker 2: Walker has in five games with the Chiefs. It's the
- 37:02Speaker 2: most yards rushing for a running back, ever in NFL
- 37:05Speaker 2: history in the first five games with a new team,
- 37:08Speaker 2: 665 for Kenneth Walker. He's playing 75% of the snaps
- 37:11Speaker 2: for Andy Reid and the Chiefs.
- 37:14Speaker 3: And here are the numbers. They are striking.
- 37:17Speaker 2: When I was on the roundtable yesterday with Chuck and Hugh,
- 37:20Speaker 2: the Seahawks roundtable every Thursday morning, 8 to 9 here
- 37:22Speaker 2: on KGR, Hugh brought up these numbers for outside and
- 37:26Speaker 2: inside the tackle running.
- 37:28Speaker 3: Which of course speaks to outside zone, the Seahawks run.
- 37:30Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker this season is averaging 6.9 yards per rush
- 37:34Speaker 2: in outside zone, 7 yards a carry when he runs
- 37:37Speaker 2: outside the tackles, 8.9 yards a carry when he cuts
- 37:41Speaker 2: it back inside the tackles.
- 37:43Speaker 3: So remember those numbers.
- 37:43Speaker 2: 7 yards a carry.
- 37:45Speaker 3: Running outside the tackles. Emmanuel Wilson for Seattle.
- 37:49Speaker 2: In the same outside zone system in which Walker is
- 37:52Speaker 2: thriving in Kansas City, Wilson is rushing for 3.2 yards.
- 37:57Speaker 3: Per rush in outside zone.
- 37:59Speaker 2: And when he runs outside the tackles, Emmanuel Wilson is
- 38:02Speaker 2: averaging 2.1 yards per carry.
- 38:04Speaker 3: Five yards per carry fewer.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Than does Kenneth Walker when he runs outside the tackles.
- 38:10Speaker 2: When Price, Jadarian Price, before he got injured in his
- 38:13Speaker 2: three games, is averaging outside the tackles when he runs
- 38:17Speaker 2: from outside the tackles to the sideline, Jadarian Price is
- 38:19Speaker 2: averaging 8.6 yards per carry. That's what the Seahawks are
- 38:25Speaker 2: missing with Price on injured reserve. They are putting a
- 38:29Speaker 2: bunch of guys in that role who are not trained
- 38:32Speaker 2: for it. It'd be like a Broadway play putting a
- 38:34Speaker 2: bunch of elementary school kids, pulling them out of recess.
- 38:37Speaker 3: And saying, hey, come on and do Macbeth. They are
- 38:42Speaker 3: a cast in the wrong production.
- 38:44Speaker 4: Well, they weren't thrown into those roles. So now they're
- 38:48Speaker 4: just learning on the fly.
- 38:49Speaker 2: Correct. And they don't have the skill set for it.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Emmanuel Wilson is a third down short yardage inside running back.
- 38:57Speaker 2: He is not a stretch play wide zone back. We
- 38:59Speaker 2: saw in Denver how many times I could see it
- 39:02Speaker 2: from the press box in Denver. The holes and lanes
- 39:05Speaker 2: were there. And the timing of the play was ruined
- 39:08Speaker 2: by the fact the back didn't get there in time.
- 39:10Speaker 2: He was not fast enough laterally to get to the
- 39:13Speaker 2: outside zone rushing lanes that the linemen were blocking for him.
- 39:16Speaker 2: And by the time Wilson arrived a half a second
- 39:19Speaker 2: or a second late, the hole was gone. And instead
- 39:22Speaker 2: of an eight-yard run, he got a one-yard run. And
- 39:24Speaker 2: that turns... Third and threes and third and twos into
- 39:27Speaker 2: third and nines and third and tens. And that's what
- 39:30Speaker 2: gets your offense going nowhere and gets the defense piling
- 39:33Speaker 2: on the quarterback and pressuring Sam Darnold into seven interceptions
- 39:36Speaker 2: the last four games. When Price was at, yes, he
- 39:39Speaker 2: fumbled twice in two games, and that's what got him
- 39:41Speaker 2: benched for swaths of that last week three at Washington.
- 39:44Speaker 2: But in the three games Price played, 8.9 yards per
- 39:48Speaker 2: carry rushing outside the tackles. You don't think they miss him?
- 39:53Speaker 2: The decision to let Kenneth Walker sign with Kansas City
- 39:56Speaker 2: looks a hell of a lot worse because Jadarian Price
- 39:58Speaker 2: is on injured reserve. If Price was not on injured reserve,
- 40:02Speaker 2: this conversation would not be nearly as striking as it
- 40:05Speaker 2: is without him. So I'm here to say, I hear
- 40:10Speaker 2: a lot of people saying, well, he's fragile, he's a bust.
- 40:12Speaker 3: Jadarian Price is not a bust. He fits the system.
- 40:15Speaker 3: They drafted him in the first round for the reason
- 40:17Speaker 3: that he is decisive and fast to the outside for
- 40:20Speaker 3: outside zone. And they truly believe that in the wide.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Zone system that John Benton and blocking system that they've installed,
- 40:27Speaker 2: the reason they hired Brian Fleury to continue what Clint
- 40:29Speaker 2: Kubiak started, is that Jadarian Price fits that. Well, he's
- 40:33Speaker 2: been on injured reserve and won't return until at least
- 40:35Speaker 2: the Bears game November 2nd, if that. This week, by
- 40:38Speaker 2: the way, we asked Mike McDonald about, hey, what's up
- 40:40Speaker 2: with Price? And he said, eh, I don't know.
- 40:44Speaker 3: Nothing new.
- 40:45Speaker 2: Either he's not one to reveal or he doesn't know
- 40:48Speaker 2: because the progress hasn't been great.
- 40:50Speaker 3: He's got an upper rib injury.
- 40:53Speaker 2: I don't know. I would think if he was.
- 40:55Speaker 3: Progressing, we'd hear a little bit more about it.
- 40:57Speaker 4: A little bit more like we did with Zach.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Correct.
- 40:59Speaker 4: Because we were kept informed on Zach's progress. And I
- 41:04Speaker 4: don't think that we're... Yeah, he was very, very nondescript
- 41:07Speaker 4: on that. And I don't think that was playing chess.
- 41:09Speaker 3: I don't either.
- 41:11Speaker 2: I do think... it's not a guarantee, even though he's
- 41:14Speaker 2: eligible to, after missing four games, come back November 2nd,
- 41:17Speaker 2: that Jadarian Price will be on the field against the
- 41:19Speaker 2: Bears a week from Monday.
- 41:20Speaker 3: That'll be the story of next week.
- 41:22Speaker 2: And also the story of next week will be how
- 41:24Speaker 2: Zach Charbonnet comes out of this game on Sunday. How
- 41:26Speaker 2: many carries he gets, how many snaps he gets, and
- 41:29Speaker 2: how he responds to it. A reconstructed knee playing for
- 41:32Speaker 2: the first time in nine months. The after is as
- 41:35Speaker 2: big as the during to see how he responds to
- 41:38Speaker 2: the performance on Sunday night and how that affects him
- 41:40Speaker 2: going forward. It does help that they have an extra
- 41:43Speaker 2: day off before they play a Monday night game against
- 41:45Speaker 2: the Bears following this Chiefs game. 49451, I've already said,
- 41:49Speaker 2: how do you think the Seahawks' defense will fare against
- 41:52Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker?
- 41:53Speaker 3: I see a couple people say 180 total yards. Chiefs romp. Yeah,
- 41:57Speaker 3: if he gets 180 total yards, the Chiefs are roughing.
- 41:59Speaker 2: Up next, our Washington State Beef Commission Football Friday features
- 42:02Speaker 2: our high school football focus we do every Friday. The
- 42:05Speaker 2: head coaches from Mount Si and Bellevue will be live
- 42:09Speaker 2: on the air because they play each other in the
- 42:10Speaker 2: Kinko Crown South out in Snoqualmie tonight. That's our big
- 42:14Speaker 2: showcase matchup of the week. 1135 Factor Fiction, your chance
- 42:17Speaker 2: to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel.
- 42:20Speaker 2: All that's coming up on our Washington State Beef Commission
- 42:22Speaker 2: Football Friday on 93.3 KJRFM. Good morning.
- 42:41Speaker 3: Happy Friday to you. Headlines are brought to you by
- 42:43Speaker 3: Frostbrew Coors Light.
- 42:44Speaker 2: As cold as the Rockies, the Seahawks put Zach Charbonnet
- 42:47Speaker 2: on a 53-man roster, the active roster off the pup list.
- 42:51Speaker 2: That has them poised to make a season debut at
- 42:53Speaker 2: running back Sunday night versus the undefeated Chiefs. A couple
- 42:56Speaker 2: edge defenders were limited by new injury issues in practice yesterday.
- 42:59Speaker 2: Demarcus Lawrence, Uchenna Nwosu, limited defense. In practice, an injury
- 43:03Speaker 2: report for the game comes out after 1 p.m.
- 43:05Speaker 3: Today.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Bears beat the Patriots last night 30-24 to begin NFL
- 43:09Speaker 2: Week 7. Chicago is now 5-2 their next game at
- 43:12Speaker 2: the Seahawks a week from Monday.
- 43:15Speaker 3: Bears definitely have the rest advantage in that one.
- 43:17Speaker 2: Kraken won for the seventh time in 11 games to
- 43:19Speaker 2: begin the season. This is their best start in franchise
- 43:21Speaker 2: history of their six seasons of existence. 5-3 last night
- 43:25Speaker 2: over previously rolling Utah. Tomorrow, they host Minnesota at Climate
- 43:29Speaker 2: Pledge Arena. Mike Benton pregame at 6.30, puck drop at
- 43:32Speaker 2: 7 p.m. right here on 93.3 KJR. This morning, the
- 43:36Speaker 2: New Jersey Devils have acquired goaltender Connor Hellebuck, the Olympic
- 43:40Speaker 2: hero from the Winnipeg Jets. He was in a contract holdout,
- 43:43Speaker 2: and Connor Hellebuck is now going to the New Jersey
- 43:45Speaker 2: Devils in a big NHL trade today. Three forwards and
- 43:49Speaker 2: two draft picks going back to Winnipeg for Connor Hellebuck
- 43:52Speaker 2: to New Jersey. The Washington Huskies are off this week.
- 43:55Speaker 2: They play Nebraska on Halloween night next week. Washington State
- 43:58Speaker 2: Cougars host 21st-ranked Boise State.
- 44:01Speaker 3: 3 o'clock tomorrow.
- 44:02Speaker 4: Go Cougs.
- 44:03Speaker 3: Martin Stadium. Jessamyn McIntyre will be there on the Cougs
- 44:05Speaker 3: Radio Network sideline. World Series begins tonight. Tampa Bay, Milwaukee.
- 44:09Speaker 3: Brewers and Rays.
- 44:10Speaker 2: First World Series since 1980 that both teams haven't won
- 44:12Speaker 2: at all before. On basketball, college basketball begins on Sunday.
- 44:18Speaker 2: 1 o'clock at Heckhead. I still call it Heckhead. Alaska
- 44:21Speaker 2: Airlines Arena. Washington State and Washington are playing college basketball
- 44:25Speaker 2: in an exhibition game.
- 44:26Speaker 3: How the hell do they not get a game together
- 44:28Speaker 3: that counts?
- 44:30Speaker 2: They play in West Texas University, Missouri Valley State, and
- 44:33Speaker 2: they can't put Washington State-Washington in a game that matters?
- 44:37Speaker 3: That's ridiculous.
- 44:38Speaker 4: Well, think about the student-athletes, Greg, because of course the
- 44:41Speaker 4: NCAA does that.
- 44:44Speaker 3: That's on the schools. They control their scheduling.
- 44:46Speaker 4: They do.
- 44:47Speaker 3: And that's probably on the University of Washington, frankly.
- 44:49Speaker 4: Yeah, they have the upper hands when it comes to that, yes.
- 44:52Speaker 2: But they're playing an exhibition game at 1 o'clock on Sunday.
- 44:57Speaker 4: And we will have that, by the way, on 9.50 a.m.
- 44:59Speaker 3: Thanks. On the 9.50 a.m.
- 45:01Speaker 2: Side, Washington State, Washington, exhibition in college basketball Sunday at
- 45:05Speaker 2: 1 p.m.
- 45:06Speaker 6: Exhibition.
- 45:07Speaker 3: That's just crazy.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Those two should always play each other, period of the story,
- 45:11Speaker 2: a home-and-home every season, one in Seattle, one in Pullman.
- 45:14Speaker 3: Come on. It's Friday.
- 45:17Speaker 2: That's a big high school football. This is football.
- 45:20Speaker 6: This is football.
- 45:22Speaker 1: This is a Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday.
- 45:26Speaker 2: This crowd is going nuts.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Football Fridays are brought to you by Washington's Beef Farmers
- 45:32Speaker 1: and Ranchers.
- 45:33Speaker 5: Beef, it's what's for dinner.
- 45:35Speaker 1: It's Football Friday with Greg Bell on your home for
- 45:40Speaker 1: the NFL.
- 45:41Speaker 2: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM. Yes, indeed, it is Friday.
- 45:48Speaker 2: That means it's high school football showcase time. We do
- 45:50Speaker 2: this every Friday at 11 o'clock, showcasing two coaches, two programs,
- 45:54Speaker 2: and a big game of the week. And tonight we
- 45:56Speaker 2: go to Snoqualmie. Mount Sai is hosting Bellevue. Big King Co.
- 46:01Speaker 2: Crown South Division matchup of two first-place teams. They're both 6-1.
- 46:05Speaker 2: They're both 4-0 in the league. Bellevue, of course, is
- 46:08Speaker 2: defending state runner, a perennial state championship contender.
- 46:13Speaker 3: Mount Si, I.
- 46:14Speaker 2: Did officiate their game a couple weeks ago. They've got
- 46:16Speaker 2: a powerhouse team. They are strong, big, and they can
- 46:19Speaker 2: throw the ball around the yard, too. So we have
- 46:22Speaker 2: live on the air the two coaches in tonight's game.
- 46:25Speaker 2: Michael Kneipp, he's a former Washington State offensive lineman, Bellevue
- 46:28Speaker 2: High graduate, now coaching his alma mater, well into his
- 46:31Speaker 2: tenure leading the Wolverines. And Don Bartel, Mount Si, will
- 46:36Speaker 2: join us right after we talk to Coach Kneipp of Bellevue. Coach,
- 46:39Speaker 2: thanks for joining us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline on
- 46:42Speaker 2: a game day.
- 46:43Speaker 3: It's a pleasure to hear from you, and thanks again.
- 46:46Speaker 2: I'll just say right off the top, thanks for all
- 46:48Speaker 2: you do for the youth in developing young men in
- 46:50Speaker 2: sports and ready for college and the rest of life.
- 46:52Speaker 11: I really appreciate it and fired up to be here.
- 46:56Speaker 8: I was telling some other day that I used to
- 46:58Speaker 8: listen to these shows as a kid, driving back from
- 47:00Speaker 8: my high school games with my dad. Tons of fond
- 47:03Speaker 8: memories of KJR and Softie and everything, too.
- 47:07Speaker 11: Again, a huge blessing and honor to be here.
- 47:09Speaker 3: Appreciate that, sir.
- 47:10Speaker 2: You got five straight wins now for Bellevue. You've beaten
- 47:14Speaker 2: Eastlake skyline handily. You beat Linden Christian who came down
- 47:18Speaker 2: to Bellevue to play you. Your only loss this season
- 47:21Speaker 2: was at powerhouse state power Puyallup. What'd you learn from
- 47:24Speaker 2: that loss? A rare early season, regular season loss for Bellevue.
- 47:30Speaker 11: Yeah, I know it was great learning experience.
- 47:31Speaker 4: Right.
- 47:31Speaker 11: And we're all out challenging, challenging ourselves early on the season.
- 47:35Speaker 9: Right.
- 47:35Speaker 11: And like kids are young.
- 47:36Speaker 5: Right.
- 47:36Speaker 8: And so you learn much kids, you know, kind of, uh,
- 47:39Speaker 8: do their own thing underneath the lights, but really as
- 47:41Speaker 8: a coach, like what I needed to get better at.
- 47:43Speaker 5: Right.
- 47:43Speaker 11: And I think getting those.
- 47:44Speaker 8: State championship level teams in competition early in the season
- 47:48Speaker 8: is invaluable.
- 47:49Speaker 6: Right.
- 47:49Speaker 8: And so, you know, I learned a ton and other
- 47:51Speaker 8: coaches learned a ton. There's areas that we can improve
- 47:53Speaker 8: to coach these kids differently because every team is so unique.
- 47:56Speaker 8: You know, these are 15, 16, 17, 18 year old kids.
- 47:59Speaker 8: And if they're 16, 17, they're different than they are
- 48:02Speaker 8: when they're 15. So it was a really good opportunity
- 48:04Speaker 8: for us as coaches to grow.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Coach Kniep of Bellevue High School here on the Beacon
- 48:09Speaker 2: Plumbing Hotline, former University of Washington offensive lineman. You took
- 48:12Speaker 2: the job at your alma mater. You won state titles
- 48:14Speaker 2: with Bellevue, of course. He's done that as a player
- 48:17Speaker 2: and as a coach. And then you took over the
- 48:19Speaker 2: job at age 24. You're now 32. You're an old man.
- 48:23Speaker 3: You're a dad.
- 48:24Speaker 2: You've got kids. How have you changed as a coach
- 48:27Speaker 2: from when you first started eight years ago as a 24-year-old, Michael,
- 48:30Speaker 2: and now as a dad? And how did fatherhood change
- 48:33Speaker 2: how you coach young men?
- 48:36Speaker 8: Yeah, my first couple teams, you know, when I first
- 48:38Speaker 8: started at 24, I feel bad.
- 48:40Speaker 11: For those kids looking back at it, right?
- 48:43Speaker 8: Like just coming out of college and then, you know,
- 48:46Speaker 8: being under Coach Peterson there and like just the level
- 48:49Speaker 8: of football and expectation I had for kind of like
- 48:51Speaker 8: what I said earlier, 15-year-old boys was probably too high.
- 48:55Speaker 8: And I wasn't as empathetic. But, you know, being a
- 48:57Speaker 8: dad and a husband and a son to such a
- 49:00Speaker 8: great family is the biggest honor and privilege of my life.
- 49:04Speaker 8: And so I think, you know, just becoming a dad
- 49:06Speaker 8: and a father just made me, again, more empathetic, understanding
- 49:09Speaker 8: that kids are parents' most valuable asset in the entire
- 49:12Speaker 8: world kind of just gives you a different perspective, but
- 49:15Speaker 8: then also kind of grounds you on, you know, how
- 49:18Speaker 8: important the work is that you do.
- 49:20Speaker 4: Do.
- 49:20Speaker 8: And I always tell these boys, like, I'm making sure,
- 49:22Speaker 8: you know, I have two year olds, I'm a girl dad,
- 49:25Speaker 8: like that there are great men out there that would
- 49:27Speaker 8: be high enough quality to date or marry my daughter someday.
- 49:31Speaker 11: And so to be able to do that year in
- 49:33Speaker 11: and year out, you know, it's been an amazing journey.
- 49:37Speaker 8: But yeah, nine years into it, I've definitely changed a
- 49:41Speaker 8: lot in my delivery and my empathy towards the kids.
- 49:45Speaker 11: And this is loving on them more now that I
- 49:48Speaker 11: have my own.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Wait till your daughters are 16, 15 and attending Bellevue
- 49:53Speaker 2: High School. What a challenge that'll be for you with
- 49:55Speaker 2: your boys if you're still coaching them. That might be fun.
- 49:59Speaker 2: Michael Kadai, the head coach of Bellevue High School. the
- 50:02Speaker 2: perennial state power. He's a grad of the Wolverines. I
- 50:05Speaker 2: wanted to ask you about your style of offense in particular.
- 50:08Speaker 2: It's so signature, so unique. Everyone knows a double wing,
- 50:11Speaker 2: the misdirection, the confusion in the backfield. It's been doing
- 50:15Speaker 2: it since you played and before Butch Gondoroff, all of that.
- 50:19Speaker 2: How important was it for you to maintain that style
- 50:21Speaker 2: of offense? And then specifically, how do you train for it?
- 50:25Speaker 2: Do you do different kind of conditioning? Do you do
- 50:27Speaker 2: different lateral drills? What is your specific chain without revealing
- 50:31Speaker 2: house secrets? to train the Bellevue style of playing.
- 50:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 50:36Speaker 11: Well, what I, you know, I kind of, you already
- 50:38Speaker 11: mentioned like.
- 50:39Speaker 8: Ivy football is a, a life teaching platform for me
- 50:42Speaker 8: as a coach.
- 50:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 50:43Speaker 8: And I think that our offense is kind of what
- 50:46Speaker 8: I want the world to reflect, which is regardless of
- 50:48Speaker 8: your size, speed, talent, you.
- 50:50Speaker 11: Can do your job. And if you can do your job, well,
- 50:53Speaker 11: you can be really successful.
- 50:55Speaker 4: Right.
- 50:55Speaker 11: And so, You know, growing up in the program, that's
- 50:57Speaker 11: all I knew.
- 50:58Speaker 8: And then obviously going to UW, you start to understand,
- 51:00Speaker 8: you know, some of the past concepts and spreads. And
- 51:02Speaker 8: I was really blessed to play under great coaches there. But,
- 51:05Speaker 8: you know, in high school, you don't control. You don't
- 51:07Speaker 8: always get a Steve Schilling or a Dave DeCastro as
- 51:10Speaker 8: an offensive lineman. And you don't always have a Buda
- 51:12Speaker 8: Baker as a running back, right? But the system you
- 51:16Speaker 8: can execute with, you know, a bunch of average Joes.
- 51:19Speaker 8: And I think that, you know, our program, regardless of
- 51:22Speaker 8: the talent level and the superstars that I just rattled off,
- 51:25Speaker 8: has had like 30 years of success because the system
- 51:28Speaker 8: is the system and you don't, you don't need amazing
- 51:31Speaker 8: athletes to be able to execute.
- 51:32Speaker 11: And do your job.
- 51:33Speaker 8: You know, this is the time I've been here, like
- 51:36Speaker 8: these two years that we've won state championships are probably
- 51:39Speaker 8: two of the most under talent teams I've had, but
- 51:43Speaker 8: the offense works because the discipline and the toughness of
- 51:46Speaker 8: the kids and the day in and day out work.
- 51:48Speaker 8: And so I'm obviously a huge believer in the offense and,
- 51:51Speaker 8: I mean, more so the older I get because we
- 51:53Speaker 8: haven't had much of a drop off in the nine
- 51:54Speaker 8: years I've had. And it's because the system really works.
- 51:58Speaker 8: And we have amazing coaches and the kids really buy
- 52:01Speaker 8: into it. But it's been really fun kind of to
- 52:03Speaker 8: be able to have that perspective as a coach.
- 52:05Speaker 11: You know, if you get.
- 52:06Speaker 8: Four yards to carry, right, three times four is 12.
- 52:08Speaker 8: So the math equation always makes the most sense in
- 52:10Speaker 8: my head.
- 52:11Speaker 3: All right.
- 52:13Speaker 2: Tonight's big game in Mount Sai for first place in
- 52:16Speaker 2: the King Co and for playoff seating, of course, here
- 52:18Speaker 2: that starts in a couple of weeks. what's the key
- 52:21Speaker 2: to beating Mount Sai and what Coach Bartle's got going
- 52:24Speaker 2: on out there? And what do you like about your
- 52:26Speaker 2: team so far that makes you think they're up to
- 52:28Speaker 2: the challenge tonight?
- 52:31Speaker 8: Yeah, first off, Mount Sai is an amazing program, and
- 52:33Speaker 8: they've been amazing since I played them in high school,
- 52:35Speaker 8: even well before that. And I think it's one of
- 52:38Speaker 8: the most unique places to play a high school football
- 52:40Speaker 8: game in the state and the country.
- 52:42Speaker 3: It's stunning.
- 52:44Speaker 8: You go out there in the sunset, you have those mountains,
- 52:46Speaker 8: it's almost like there's no place you'd rather be. And
- 52:49Speaker 8: Coach Bartell has obviously had an amazing track record of
- 52:53Speaker 8: career success and really has them playing with a ton
- 52:56Speaker 8: of energy, enthusiasm. And they're, you know, what you'd expect
- 52:59Speaker 8: from Mountside, big, strong, fast, disciplined, tough, right? Kind of
- 53:03Speaker 8: all the things that, you know, you look for in
- 53:06Speaker 8: a program to be great. And so it's a huge challenge, right?
- 53:09Speaker 8: Especially going up there with that environment environment. And I
- 53:13Speaker 8: know that they'll be completely ready to go. And, you know,
- 53:16Speaker 8: it's kind of been a longstanding rivalry, right? Even back
- 53:19Speaker 8: to when I was playing there, you know, against them,
- 53:22Speaker 8: they were always really good and talented and physical, which
- 53:25Speaker 8: makes things really challenging. But our guys, you know, are awesome.
- 53:28Speaker 8: Our guys are going to have a lot of fun.
- 53:30Speaker 8: They're still young. You know, we have a ton of
- 53:32Speaker 8: juniors playing. But I think our senior leadership is starting
- 53:36Speaker 8: to pick up. And so, you know, it's all about
- 53:38Speaker 8: just trusting the process and getting better every single week
- 53:40Speaker 8: and controlling the things that we can control. especially in
- 53:44Speaker 8: a hostile environment for a high school game. But just
- 53:46Speaker 8: going out there and having as much fun as possible
- 53:48Speaker 8: is always the goal.
- 53:49Speaker 2: Coach, Michael Knight, Bellevue High School. Appreciate you, sir, for
- 53:52Speaker 2: what you do for our kids. Enjoy the game tonight,
- 53:55Speaker 2: and best of luck on the season.
- 53:57Speaker 11: Yeah, thank you so much.
- 53:58Speaker 8: It's truly an honor and privilege to be able to
- 54:00Speaker 8: talk to everybody. It should be.
- 54:02Speaker 11: A lot of fun.
- 54:03Speaker 3: Thank you, sir.
- 54:04Speaker 2: Michael Knight, former Washington Husky offensive lineman in his eighth
- 54:07Speaker 2: year coaching Bellevue. He's heading into Snoqualmie tonight. He and
- 54:10Speaker 2: his Wolverines are playing Mount Sai. Also 6-1. Also 4-0
- 54:15Speaker 2: in the King Co. Crown South Division. Coach Don Bartel,
- 54:19Speaker 2: a legend there in Snoqualmie, joins us on the Beacon
- 54:22Speaker 2: Plumbing Hotline on this Washington State Beef Commission Football Friday. Sir,
- 54:26Speaker 2: thanks a lot for joining us on a game day.
- 54:28Speaker 2: I know you have a few ten other things to
- 54:30Speaker 2: do than talk to me right now.
- 54:33Speaker 3: But thanks for joining us.
- 54:35Speaker 2: And just give us a flavor of what this rivalry
- 54:37Speaker 2: that Coach Kniep was just talking about, Bellevue and Mount Sinai, means.
- 54:41Speaker 7: Well, it's, it's funny because it goes long beyond my
- 54:46Speaker 7: time here. And actually even my time in the King
- 54:48Speaker 7: co being a four a head coach for so long,
- 54:51Speaker 7: you just kind of watched it happen and talk to
- 54:53Speaker 7: the staff. And there've been a lot of great mountainside
- 54:55Speaker 7: teams that have run through here and they, and Bellevue
- 54:58Speaker 7: had some really, really good games and, and some meaningful ones, uh, semifinals,
- 55:03Speaker 7: I think in like 2012, um, And it's a good one.
- 55:08Speaker 7: There are a lot of people out here that this
- 55:10Speaker 7: is a big game for. And most notably, some of
- 55:13Speaker 7: them are parents who went to Newport back in the
- 55:15Speaker 7: day when Newport was really, really good. And so it's
- 55:19Speaker 7: been kind of fun to watch this thing grow over
- 55:21Speaker 7: the last three or four years that I've been here.
- 55:23Speaker 2: You've been an assistant coach, a coordinator, and now a
- 55:26Speaker 2: head coach, long time in the program. How do you
- 55:29Speaker 2: think that's helped you shape young men and how you
- 55:31Speaker 2: teach and coach, having coached and come up through the
- 55:34Speaker 2: ranks and learned it from all angles?
- 55:37Speaker 7: Well, I would say that, like, for me, I've always
- 55:41Speaker 7: said that I've had mentors I did not deserve. And
- 55:44Speaker 7: so a lot of what I'm trying to do is
- 55:46Speaker 7: just fulfill the obligation to pay back what I was
- 55:50Speaker 7: given and I don't know why I was so lucky
- 55:52Speaker 7: that the first guy that ever hired me was Dave Lutz,
- 55:54Speaker 7: the Kentwood legend, the guy who started that program back
- 55:57Speaker 7: in the late 80s. I don't know why I got
- 56:00Speaker 7: a chance to work with Steve Jervis in 2002 or
- 56:02Speaker 7: Mike Price later that year or Bill Dolba for the
- 56:05Speaker 7: next two years after that. I've been with some really
- 56:08Speaker 7: great people who have kind of just shown me the way.
- 56:11Speaker 7: And then I got a chance to go back to
- 56:14Speaker 7: Eastlake in 2013 and and be the head coach there
- 56:18Speaker 7: for almost 10 years. It was all about paying back
- 56:20Speaker 7: the people of that community. And in 2013, I moved
- 56:24Speaker 7: out here to the Valley, Snoqualmie Valley, and loved living here.
- 56:29Speaker 7: And so around COVID time, when I took a break
- 56:32Speaker 7: to jump in with a startup company, I just thought
- 56:36Speaker 7: if I ever came back to coaching and teaching, Mount
- 56:38Speaker 7: Si would be the place that I'd want to be.
- 56:40Speaker 7: And so that opportunity opened up in 2023 when the
- 56:44Speaker 7: longtime D coordinator retired from football. And so I jumped
- 56:49Speaker 7: in and had a great group. And this group that
- 56:52Speaker 7: is the senior group, that is our 24 guys who
- 56:55Speaker 7: are leading this program, especially the guys in my position group,
- 56:58Speaker 7: the linebackers, And that's one of the big reasons why
- 57:01Speaker 7: when this job opened, I thought, I'm going to go
- 57:03Speaker 7: ahead and do this.
- 57:04Speaker 3: A lot of long.
- 57:04Speaker 7: Conversation at home, my family, about jumping back in it
- 57:08Speaker 7: again and all that it entails, especially when you want.
- 57:10Speaker 2: To do things the way we do them.
- 57:13Speaker 7: But I have loved every second of it because I
- 57:15Speaker 7: just love this group.
- 57:16Speaker 2: What is the way Mountside does it? And give people
- 57:18Speaker 2: an example. I know what coaches do and the hours
- 57:22Speaker 2: they spend. Give me a typical day in the life
- 57:25Speaker 2: of Don Bartel, the head coach at Mountside, when you start,
- 57:28Speaker 2: when you get home.
- 57:29Speaker 3: And what are you trying to do? What's the main
- 57:31Speaker 3: overarching point that you're trying to get across to your guys?
- 57:35Speaker 7: You know, I feel like as leaders, our job is
- 57:38Speaker 7: to create experiences. In fact, I talked about this in
- 57:40Speaker 7: leadership classes yesterday, that what I'm trying to do all
- 57:45Speaker 7: the time is create an experience for our staff. So
- 57:48Speaker 7: then they can create experiences for our athletes and they
- 57:51Speaker 7: can go through the things they need to to build
- 57:53Speaker 7: the capacity. So for me, yesterday I was up at
- 57:56Speaker 7: 430 or 530. making sure that practice was scripted. We
- 58:00Speaker 7: go full pads on Thursday, take Wednesday notepads, and then
- 58:05Speaker 7: Tuesday our full pads. We only get two days a week.
- 58:08Speaker 7: And so I wanted to make sure the script was set,
- 58:10Speaker 7: that we see everything that our guys need to see
- 58:13Speaker 7: and the experience in the different position groups. Get to
- 58:16Speaker 7: school in the morning, and I teach two leadership classes.
- 58:19Speaker 7: We had to wrap up homecoming and talk about what's
- 58:21Speaker 7: next for the winter. Then I teach a social media
- 58:24Speaker 7: marketing class, and we had the Empower Youth Organization in
- 58:27Speaker 7: talking about how Our group is going to be able
- 58:29Speaker 7: to help them with their social media marketing plan. And
- 58:32Speaker 7: then I finish out the day with a crazy lunch
- 58:35Speaker 7: where I'm handling phone calls and recruiters and working through
- 58:39Speaker 7: little minor issues through the day. My list of maybe
- 58:42Speaker 7: some kids that weren't on their best behavior in class
- 58:44Speaker 7: during the day. And then I finished with my two
- 58:47Speaker 7: leadership classes and head back out. We had team dinner
- 58:50Speaker 7: last night, so we stayed until probably about six o'clock
- 58:53Speaker 7: and then get home and turn on the huddle and
- 58:55Speaker 7: watch our freshman team. play their game last night and
- 58:59Speaker 7: try to spend time with my family, even though my
- 59:02Speaker 7: wife is like, you're here, but you're not always here.
- 59:07Speaker 3: So, yeah.
- 59:07Speaker 7: And then on Saturday mornings, I get to go watch
- 59:09Speaker 7: my son play football. And every day, my daughter's out
- 59:12Speaker 7: here filming practice. So we mix in the family time
- 59:15Speaker 7: when we can. But it's definitely fun serving your community
- 59:19Speaker 7: right where you live and the friends and people that
- 59:22Speaker 7: you know. That's the best part.
- 59:24Speaker 2: Coach Don Bartel, we have a text on the Tacoma
- 59:26Speaker 2: Dutch text line, 49451. It's from the 425- I was
- 59:30Speaker 2: on the 2013 team with Coach Bartel. Guy can get
- 59:33Speaker 2: you to run through a wall. That must make you
- 59:37Speaker 2: feel good.
- 59:40Speaker 7: You know, it's funny because there are lots of opinions.
- 59:45Speaker 7: You do this long enough. This is like year 30
- 59:47Speaker 7: for me. Shout out to Tom Banner coaching the 300th
- 59:51Speaker 7: game tonight. By the way, that is one heck of
- 59:53Speaker 7: an accomplishment.
- 59:53Speaker 2: After 30 years.
- 59:54Speaker 7: It's funny that We're preparing for wing T and they're
- 1:00:00Speaker 7: preparing for, I think, triple options. So Tom's coaching against
- 1:00:02Speaker 7: what he probably.
- 1:00:03Speaker 9: Did 30 years ago.
- 1:00:06Speaker 7: But I think over the 30 years, it's like a lot,
- 1:00:09Speaker 7: there are a lot of opinions about you. And I
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: think the opinions that matter are most are probably the
- 1:00:14Speaker 7: 30 year old men who played for me when they
- 1:00:17Speaker 7: were 15, 16, 17 years old. And I think that's
- 1:00:23Speaker 7: the long-term stuff that you get when you kind of
- 1:00:26Speaker 7: flip the script on your career, when you get over
- 1:00:28Speaker 7: whatever that tipping point is, where you start to look
- 1:00:31Speaker 7: at the long game. And I mean, I told a
- 1:00:33Speaker 7: kid yesterday after practice, he needed some memory enhancement about
- 1:00:37Speaker 7: how to behave.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: And so we went through.
- 1:00:43Speaker 7: That. I think it's going to be difficult for you
- 1:00:45Speaker 7: to understand this, but this is me caring about you.
- 1:00:49Speaker 7: At some point, you have to change the way you
- 1:00:51Speaker 7: see yourself so you can start acting in accordance with
- 1:00:53Speaker 7: the expectations we have. And that's what I want for you.
- 1:00:57Speaker 7: And so we're going to keep reminding you until that happens.
- 1:01:00Speaker 7: And so it's great to have those guys out there.
- 1:01:02Speaker 7: Those guys in 2013 now are coaching against me. Wrote
- 1:01:06Speaker 7: a letter of recommendation so Peyton Puller could beat me
- 1:01:08Speaker 7: every year.
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: That's Skyline High School.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so funny.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: But you know what?
- 1:01:13Speaker 7: That's part of the joy of this too. I think
- 1:01:15Speaker 7: depending on how you look at it, There are four
- 1:01:17Speaker 7: or five guys that coached on our staff and for
- 1:01:20Speaker 7: me that are now head coaches. And that to me
- 1:01:23Speaker 7: is like the greatest thing ever because of how people
- 1:01:28Speaker 7: poured into me. It just always feels good to know
- 1:01:30Speaker 7: that there are guys that choose to be head coaches
- 1:01:33Speaker 7: because of the example that they've seen from you or
- 1:01:36Speaker 7: from somewhere else.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: That's really cool. Coach Don Bartel, Mountside High School. Let
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: me ask you in closing related to that. In 10,
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: 20 years, when a player from the Mount Sai High
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: School class of 2026 comes back and says thanks, or
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: even says hi, or maybe just looks at.
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: You, what do you hope he remembers most about.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: Working for and playing for and being under the leadership
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: of Coach Don Bartel at Mount Sai?
- 1:02:02Speaker 7: I can tell you that I went to the 20-year
- 1:02:06Speaker 7: reunion of my first group at Eastlake in 05-06, and
- 1:02:11Speaker 7: I asked them that question.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: What do you remember?
- 1:02:15Speaker 7: And I think probably for as long as I live,
- 1:02:19Speaker 7: this will be the answer I want. They said, I
- 1:02:22Speaker 7: felt loved. Yeah, that's probably the best part about the
- 1:02:31Speaker 7: whole thing is knowing that you can say it, but
- 1:02:35Speaker 7: when you show it, that is the best thing in
- 1:02:38Speaker 7: the world. I think these kids play hard out here
- 1:02:41Speaker 7: because they were born and raised in the valley. Like
- 1:02:43Speaker 7: this group has been together since they were in sixth
- 1:02:46Speaker 7: or seventh grade. And there is a love. Are they talented?
- 1:02:50Speaker 7: Heck yeah, they're talented. And you've seen us, so you
- 1:02:54Speaker 7: know how hard they play.
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: I do.
- 1:02:57Speaker 7: And there's a lot there that other teams don't have
- 1:03:01Speaker 7: because those kids don't grow up together and ours do.
- 1:03:04Speaker 7: And so there's already a love here. I just want
- 1:03:07Speaker 7: them to make sure that through all of the difficulties–
- 1:03:10Speaker 7: of all of the frustrations, of all the dialing them in,
- 1:03:14Speaker 7: especially in year one of this version of the program,
- 1:03:17Speaker 7: all those hard times, those are all love.
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: And they know that in the end, whenever.
- 1:03:23Speaker 7: They need something, we're there. So I hope one of
- 1:03:27Speaker 7: the things they remember too is, that they can coach
- 1:03:29Speaker 7: for me anytime they want. So I hope when they
- 1:03:31Speaker 7: come back in 10 years, they remember how we do things.
- 1:03:34Speaker 7: Cause we're going to need guys that can tell those
- 1:03:36Speaker 7: stories of like why this is important because they've not
- 1:03:39Speaker 7: only used it in football, but they've used it in
- 1:03:41Speaker 7: other places in their lives.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: Love that's, that's pretty, that's pretty special. Thank you, sir,
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: for all you do. Coach Don Bartel, Mount Sinai High School,
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: thank you for what you do. Thanks for the time
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: you put in. Thanks for setting an example for young
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: adults and trying to make them better people in our society.
- 1:03:57Speaker 11: Thanks.
- 1:03:58Speaker 7: Don't let anybody say that I'm an example. I have
- 1:04:00Speaker 7: some rough patches here and there, but I'll take all
- 1:04:03Speaker 7: the rest of that. And I do want to say
- 1:04:06Speaker 7: thank you. As everything else around high school football coverage dies,
- 1:04:09Speaker 7: high school sports coverage dies, the fact that we get
- 1:04:13Speaker 7: to do this with you on a Friday morning– You
- 1:04:15Speaker 7: are doing great things, and I cannot tell you how
- 1:04:18Speaker 7: much we all appreciate it.
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: Thank you. I appreciate that, Coach. Thank you very much,
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: and good luck to you on the rest of the season.
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: Good luck tonight.
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: Thank you, Coach. Don Bartel, Mount Sai High School. When
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: I said, what do you want your players to remember
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: you by 10, 15, 20 years from now? That they
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: were loved. That's pretty cool. Up next, your chance to
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: be a part of the show on the 49451 Tacoma
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: Dodge text line. Your talkbacks on the iHeartRadio app or 933KJR.
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: Com.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: And at 1135 Factor Fiction, your latest chance to win
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. All of
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: that is coming up next on 93.3 KJR FM.
- 1:05:04Speaker 6: Hey, Greg.
- 1:05:05Speaker 11: John Schneider's M.O.
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: Is to always add... at the trade deadline.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: What positions do you see John adding this year?
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 1:05:16Speaker 12: Good job on the show, guys. Greg, Jessamyn, loved you
- 1:05:20Speaker 12: guys since you took over. Doing awesome. Also, just wanted
- 1:05:24Speaker 12: to add in, love the way that yesterday, Hugh Millen
- 1:05:28Speaker 12: and Greg went back and forth. This is how I
- 1:05:31Speaker 12: believe all interaction, all debate should be, political, analysts or otherwise.
- 1:05:35Speaker 11: It was done with tact, it was respectful. And it
- 1:05:39Speaker 11: was it had integrity. It was wonderful.
- 1:05:41Speaker 12: I love the way you guys go back and forth
- 1:05:43Speaker 12: while still being able to respect each other's opinions.
- 1:05:45Speaker 11: I think it's great.
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: Can I say something about that real quick?
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: It's great that he said that because Hugh texted me
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: right after the roundtable was over and said, hey, I
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: really appreciate how we disagreed, but we respected each other
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: on this.
- 1:05:58Speaker 12: Yes.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: It was about the decision for Kenneth Walker to. And,
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: of course, it's obvious they made a mistake. And Hugh
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: was pointing out how huge a mistake that was. And
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: I was trying to give the Seahawks perspective as to
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: why they did it and how it was consistent with
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: what Schneider had done in the other 12 of 15
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: years post-Marshawn Lynch. But we did it, and I tried
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: to do it in a way that didn't say that
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: Hugh was full of beans.
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: He's right.
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: It was a mistake.
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: But anyway, we listened.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: I just appreciate that talk back because that's exactly what Hugh.
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: And I thought. So thank you.
- 1:06:32Speaker 6: Yes. Okay.
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: You are a validated listener because that's how the men
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: involved felt.
- 1:06:36Speaker 6: Hey, guys.
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: You know, I was so excited for the Seahawks to
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: get Fleury after seeing what he did with Kittle.
- 1:06:42Speaker 11: But, jeez, you forgot we have a tight end, too?
- 1:06:45Speaker 11: I swear, he calls plays like my 8-year-old nephew does
- 1:06:48Speaker 11: in Madden.
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: Throw it to one player.
- 1:06:49Speaker 11: Just throw it to him. That's all we need to do.
- 1:06:51Speaker 11: One player. That's it. It's getting frustrating.
- 1:06:54Speaker 8: Honestly, he needs to remember we have other players on
- 1:06:57Speaker 8: the team, too, that can touch the ball and catch it, too,
- 1:06:59Speaker 8: and play.
- 1:06:59Speaker 9: Madden.
- 1:07:00Speaker 12: I don't know if I'm allowed to do more than
- 1:07:02Speaker 12: one of these. But realistically, guys, I know we got
- 1:07:05Speaker 12: to root for our Seahawks. But what are the odds? Jessamyn, Greg,
- 1:07:10Speaker 12: what do you think the odds are that we actually
- 1:07:12Speaker 12: come in or Kansas City comes in and we get
- 1:07:14Speaker 12: this done? I know if any defense can do it,
- 1:07:17Speaker 12: it should be ours. But I'm still worried. I'm just
- 1:07:21Speaker 12: curious what the percentage ratio in your guys' mind is. Also,
- 1:07:25Speaker 12: on a side note, Jessamyn, I think you're very pretty.
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: I did not know that.
- 1:07:29Speaker 5: Oh, oh.
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: How do you know what I look like?
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: Oh, I thought she edited these.
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: I actually did not know that.
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: Her face is as red as the KJR logo right now.
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: That's just my natural blush coming through.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: I did not know that was the end of it.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: Is that caller's name Mike? That's Mike at Edmonds.
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: I recognize his voice. I saw that there were no
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: swear words, and that was the last one to come in,
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: so I was like, oh, he's got a good opinion.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: I told you the bar was low. That's awesome.
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: That needs to be a cut or whatever you guys
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: call it in radio world.
- 1:08:08Speaker 6: Okay, okay.
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: I would just say thank you.
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: A drop, a drop.
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: You are really nice.
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: Where's Jackson when we need him? That's a drop.
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: That was really nice. That was just really nice.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: Her face is so red. It's awesome. Now's your chance
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: to win $ 1, 000 right now.
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: We're set to go.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: Glad you're with us.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly $ 1, 000 and the $ 10, 000
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: grand prize.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: It's Fact or Fiction.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: day feels lucky. Fact or Fiction is on. Sports Radio
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: 93.3 KJR FM.
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: Honestly, I'm surprised it took this long for that to happen.
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: Okay, just so you know, we can see the transcription,
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: but my name doesn't necessarily go into all of them.
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: It comes up as like... sesame sometimes and stuff. And
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: if I see there wasn't a swear word and it
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: has a good opinion about football, I'm putting it in.
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: So that, and no, I was not aware it was
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: in there.
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: On the YouTube, you can't see when she doesn't talk, right?
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Because it's voice activated.
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't have it on right now.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: When Jessamyn heard that comment, she just, she turned white
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: as snow and.
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: Red as the devil in a span of about 10 seconds.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. She had this look on her face like, oh.
- 1:09:32Speaker 4: Well, as long as you like the show enough to
- 1:09:34Speaker 4: figure out what I look like, I'll say thank you.
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: And also, thanks for being nice about it.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: Like I said, I'm surprised it took this long for
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: someone to say.
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: That live on the air. That was awesome.
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: Okay, I know you're getting a kick out of it.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: I am getting a kick out of it. It's not wrong.
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: No, it was very nice.
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: He's not wrong. I just can't believe it took this
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: long for that to happen. All right, here's your chance
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: I'm going over to the Palouse. The 21st-ranked Boise State
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: Broncos are rolling. Their offense, they scored 27 against Oregon,
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: and they lost barely. 34-27 to Eugene to start the
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: season when Oregon was ranked number two. Since then, Boise
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: State's gone 38 on Memphis, 38 on South Dakota.
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: South Dakota?
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: 32 on Western Michigan, 37 at Utah State, and 38
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: at Fresno last week.
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: That's not really South Dakota and Western, man. What are
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: they doing playing now?
- 1:10:34Speaker 6: Anyway.
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: I mean, this is reconfigured Pac-12 Conference. I know.
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: Scheduling was catch-as-catch-can. Eshleman's getting a second start for the Cougs.
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: The over-under in this game is 53-and-a-half. I'm not sure
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: Eshelman's going to score 30 points like he did late,
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: 20 of his 30 points late like he did against
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: the Beavs and Corvallis. That game was over 27-10 at
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: the half, and the Cougs scored their points in the
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: second half at the game they decided.
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: So I'm going under. 53.5 points.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: I think Boise State and Washington State combined for fewer
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: than 53. If you agree, text FACT to 49451. If
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: you disagree, text FICTION to 49451. You have 12 minutes,
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: and after which time, The next chance will be 235
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: with Ian Furness. Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. Your chance
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: to win $ 1, 000. We'll draw Monday all the winners from
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: this week. Boise State at Washington State. 3 p.m. in
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: the Palouse tomorrow at Martin Stadium. 53.5 total points. I
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: say the under. I say that Washington State holds down
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: the Broncos a little bit and Eshelman doesn't have the
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: success he had late against the Beavs, against the top Pac-10,
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: Pac-12 team right now in Boise State.
- 1:11:42Speaker 4: It's a formidable opponent.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: It is.
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: Like, it really is. So this is not going to
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: be an easy matchup for the Cougs, no matter what.
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: But I do like that you think that the under, like,
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: I like that.
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: Kind of hold them down and maybe not be a
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: boat race. And Eshelman.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: Maybe not being as prolific as he was in the
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: second half at Oregon State when that game was decided.
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: Also, there's one tape on him.
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: Correct.
- 1:12:05Speaker 9: Right?
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: And even if it's a 31-21 game, that would still
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: be an under. You know what I mean? That's what
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: I'm thinking here. So I'm taking the under of 53.5
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: at Poison State at Washington State. If you agree, text
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: FACT to 49451. If you disagree, text FICTION to 49451.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: There's no talkback or Tacoma Dodge text line text that
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: can be better than what we just heard on the talkback.
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: Greg is taking too much joy and me not being
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: good at taking compliments.
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: Fantastic joy. 425 says, happy Friday, guys. The high school
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: football segment continues to impress. I appreciate that. And that's
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: why we do it, but appreciate that. Matt, for a
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: friend of the station, 425, thank you for carrying the
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: torch on coverage of high school sports in our state.
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: We love listening to recaps with Fane. You do a
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: great job with the coaches' interviews at Friday mornings. My
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: son plays for Coach Bartell at Mount Si High School,
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: and he raves about his love and leadership on and
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: off the field.
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: We're lucky to have him. What a great interview. I
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: appreciate hearing from the parents.
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: Both of them, too.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: Thanks, Matt. Yeah, Michael, can I vote for Bellevue? That
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: was a really good segment. If you missed it, go
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: to the iHeartRadio app or 923kjrs. com, the Greg Bell Show podcast.
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: You can download it. Keith253. com. Tacoma High School football in
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: the 80s helped me find a different path in life.
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: I never went pro, but I did learn discipline, structure, respect, competition,
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: and teamwork.
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: Just a few life skills.
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: God bless these coaches teaching far more than spirals and
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: coverage techniques. Well said, Keith.
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: And we're going to continue to do it. And this
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: was Greg's idea to do this. Just so you all know,
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: Greg is the one who has championed this, and I
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: was wholeheartedly supporting it. And I have learned so much
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: from these coaches. And it brings me back to the
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: days of, you know, when I was a kid and
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: my dad was a coach and knowing how much sacrifice
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: they give to both their families as well as to
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: the field and to trying to grow young men. And
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: this is outside of. Your home life, a lot of
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: them are also teachers. A lot of them are spending
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: a lot of time in the classroom doing leadership things
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: and then coaching. That's a lot of their lives. And
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: it is a family sport. I always say football is family.
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: So I like that we're doing this on this show.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: And, you know, honestly, I did it and I wanted
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: to start it because I want the kids and high
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: school athletes and youth athletes in our area to know
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: we care and we notice and we appreciate them. I
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: think they get lost, and I think they think that
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: adults don't sometimes care, and we're in a pro sports town,
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: and all we talk about are Huskies and Seahawks and Mariners,
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: and we notice. I'm out there on Friday nights. I
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: see there's kids that are great. They come up to me,
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: and they thank me for being there. I was at
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: a JV game at Edmonds, Woodway, and Shorecrest the other night.
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: Oh, in my back of the woods.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: Yeah, and kids came up. The losing team came up
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: to me after the game in the handshake line as
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: I was coming off the field with my crew, and
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: they came up to me and said, ref, thanks for
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: being here. Appreciate you coming out and supporting us. Come on.
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: 15 year old kid. Yeah.
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: I was like, this is why I do this.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: So that we want to shine a spotlight on all
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: of you, the parents who all the hours you do
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: spend and sending them to driving them to weightlifting sessions
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: and packing their lunches at six in the morning for
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: early practice and going to their games in the rain.
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: And especially the coaches. We know you don't make money.
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: You're not doing it for that. You're doing it for
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: the kids, the communities, or maybe because it was done
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: to you and passing it on like, Like Coach Bartell said.
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: So thank you to all of you.
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: I've gotten texts from fellow officials, from parents, from friends
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: of mine, just on our latest segment with Don Bartell
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: and Michael Kniep. So thanks to all of you supporting
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: high school sports. We'll do our best. Coach Bartell brought
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: up a great point. It's dwindling. The resources and the
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: commitment and journalism and high school sports is dwindling. So
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: we're trying to do our part. Dick Fane does it
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: at 10 o'clock every Friday night with our high school
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: scoreboard show as well. I'm 10 o'clock here on 93.3.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: Up next, Ian Furness, the mayor of Maple Valley, to
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: tell us what he's got on his show for a Friday.
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: It's usually Greg Cosell for sure, which is a can't miss.
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: Ian's up next on 93.3 KJR FM.
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: Welcome back to 93.3 KJR.
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: We have a couple of people on the text line asking, man,
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: I missed it. Can you get back to play back
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: the high school segment? We're out of time, but it'll
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: be on the iHeartRadio at 93.3 KJR or the podcast,
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: the 933KJR.
- 1:16:38Speaker 3: Com, the Greg Bell Show.
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: Right after the show, you can go to the Greg
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: Bell Show and you'll find the podcast on there and
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: replay it starting at the 11 o'clock hour.
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: Coach Michael Kneipp of Bellevue.
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: Coach Don Bartel at Mount Si, and his answer when
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: I asked him 10, 15 years from now when kids
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: come back after playing for you, what do you want
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: them to remember most?
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: And he said that they were loved. He got emotional.
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: You could hear it in his voice. He just stopped.
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: That was great.
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: That was great.
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: And then the talkback of saying that Jessamyn's attractive is
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: pretty great.
- 1:17:10Speaker 4: Let's let that one die.
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: That's not dying.
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: I'm sorry, ma'am.
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: Why are we letting that one die?
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: Because it was at the very end of a talkback.
- 1:17:19Speaker 4: I looked at the transcript. It didn't have swears. My
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: name doesn't go through. I just thought it was going
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: to say thank you. And it was just like a
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: two-second little thing. He said something very nice about me,
- 1:17:29Speaker 4: which I very much appreciate.
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: Well, take the damn compliment.
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: I'm not good at that.
- 1:17:32Speaker 13: Nobody's saying that about you and me.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: Nobody has ever said that. It was very kind. Ian
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: and Greg are attractive.
- 1:17:42Speaker 11: Really?
- 1:17:43Speaker 13: Somebody say that, please, on a talkback.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: Yeah, Wendy, can you call in?
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: Anybody.
- 1:17:47Speaker 5: Anybody.
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: It was really sweet.
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: Man, woman, I don't care.
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: Very well-formed thought.
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: I put makeup on for you people. Yes, he does.
- 1:17:56Speaker 7: Yes, he does.
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: I put makeup on for you people. I took Washington State,
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: Boise State, the under 53.5 points. Is that wise or unwise?
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: 40-3 is still under 53.
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: 40-3? You think we're going to beat them that bad?
- 1:18:13Speaker 3: That was my man, Marcus, on the text line. You
- 1:18:15Speaker 3: think we're going to kick their ass that bad?
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: Okay, sure. Oh, God.
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: Whatever.
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: You've got a good hockey team you work for.
- 1:18:25Speaker 13: They're surprisingly effective so far. Seven wins in 11 games.
- 1:18:30Speaker 13: Most of them franchise history. Very resilient team, I would say.
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: You mentioned last night they didn't have a shot for
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: 13 minutes of play?
- 1:18:35Speaker 8: 13 minutes.
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: Yeah, 13 minutes.
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: The Canucks didn't have a shot an entire period in
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: the second period last night.
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: Canucks are awful.
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: They are.
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: They are awful. And that was against Detroit.
- 1:18:44Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: Who's got their own problem.
- 1:18:45Speaker 13: Yeah, Utah's really good. uh seattle played well last night
- 1:18:50Speaker 13: for the bout this has been their story they play
- 1:18:52Speaker 13: well for a couple periods can they play well for
- 1:18:54Speaker 13: 60 it's but they played well and then they they
- 1:18:58Speaker 13: gave up the tying goal it's three three and you're
- 1:19:00Speaker 13: like oh and then they scored what they thought was
- 1:19:01Speaker 13: the go-ahead goal and it wasn't I was offside, and
- 1:19:06Speaker 13: they're like, well, let's sneak a point out of this maybe,
- 1:19:09Speaker 13: and then they get the game-winning goal and hold on,
- 1:19:11Speaker 13: get the empty netter. No, they're playing well. Lane's got
- 1:19:13Speaker 13: them going. Lane's a good coach. He's got them believing.
- 1:19:16Speaker 13: Very resilient team. Teams in the past, and it's a
- 1:19:19Speaker 13: long year, but teams in the past, it's 3-3, and
- 1:19:22Speaker 13: you had a two-goal lead at 3-1 at one point,
- 1:19:25Speaker 13: and it's a 3-3 game. That cracking team the last
- 1:19:28Speaker 13: couple years would have, lost five to three themselves and
- 1:19:32Speaker 13: not won five to three.
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: So it was, it was good. And Gruby's just playing
- 1:19:34Speaker 3: lights out. He did. He started again. That's four out
- 1:19:36Speaker 3: of five. He started and he's been great.
- 1:19:38Speaker 13: Apparently he's from, from Russia. Is that what Bucciaross gets named?
- 1:19:42Speaker 13: I got to, even I know that.
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: Dude, Grubauer.
- 1:19:45Speaker 13: His nickname is the German gentleman there, Bucci. He would probably,
- 1:19:49Speaker 13: if you want, I mean, if you're doing a national game,
- 1:19:51Speaker 13: don't you do a little bit of research on both teams?
- 1:19:53Speaker 13: Not just the one that everyone's in love with, which
- 1:19:55Speaker 13: would be the Utah Mammoth, uh, Their.
- 1:19:57Speaker 4: Hometowns are right next to their names on a roster.
- 1:20:03Speaker 9: Okay.
- 1:20:03Speaker 13: Berkeley Caton. One of the top young players in the league.
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: Listen to the provincial, the very provincial.
- 1:20:09Speaker 13: I was getting all these texts last night from people going,
- 1:20:12Speaker 13: what the hell is this? And I'm like, you know,
- 1:20:14Speaker 13: we had to pay ESPN Plus to watch this.
- 1:20:16Speaker 3: And I'm like, I was at the game.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:20:19Speaker 13: And then, yeah, I guess it was a Utah Mammoth
- 1:20:22Speaker 13: infomercial last night.
- 1:20:23Speaker 7: So.
- 1:20:25Speaker 13: Sports fans get very uptight if they feel like the
- 1:20:28Speaker 13: national announcers are, at least if they're not objective, if
- 1:20:32Speaker 13: they're not either objective or siding with their team, if
- 1:20:35Speaker 13: it's the other way around, that's the perception, and people
- 1:20:37Speaker 13: get very, very upset.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: I didn't hear it.
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: I'm just passing along with it. I do find it interesting.
- 1:20:42Speaker 13: The German goaltender, Philip Grubauer, who is now Russian, but
- 1:20:46Speaker 13: his nickname is.
- 1:20:46Speaker 3: You know, that famous Russian surname, Grubauer. Yeah, exactly. And
- 1:20:50Speaker 3: his nickname is the German Gentleman. I'm trying to make
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: sense of that.
- 1:20:54Speaker 13: He's been in the league for 12 years. Won a
- 1:20:57Speaker 13: Stanley Cup. Finalist for the Vesna. The German gentleman.
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: Oh, Comrade.
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: Nice game. Great game, Comrade.
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: I might use that tomorrow night on the broadcast.
- 1:21:10Speaker 13: Grubauer, who they say apparently is Russian.
- 1:21:14Speaker 4: Who knew?
- 1:21:15Speaker 13: God, I'll tell you right now. He'd be very careful, man.
- 1:21:18Speaker 13: There'd be people looking for him. You think he's some
- 1:21:19Speaker 13: sort of KGB undercover?
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: Thanks, Pooch.
- 1:21:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:21:24Speaker 12: Dummy.
- 1:21:24Speaker 13: Anyway.
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: Is it a Greg Cosell day today?
- 1:21:27Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 1:21:27Speaker 13: What can the tape tell us? What can the tape
- 1:21:30Speaker 13: tell us about Sam Darnold? What can the tape tell
- 1:21:34Speaker 13: us about Ken Walker? Zach Charbonnet?
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: The Seahawks? Emmanuel Wilson?
- 1:21:39Speaker 13: What will the tape tell us? We'll find out at
- 1:21:41Speaker 13: 1220 what the tape tells us. I don't know if
- 1:21:43Speaker 13: it's going to be good, but. This tape will speak
- 1:21:46Speaker 13: to him. It always does.
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: Yeah, so we'll do that.
- 1:21:49Speaker 13: Our buddy Danny O'Neill in the 1 o'clock hour. Rob
- 1:21:52Speaker 13: Rang talking college football. Good weekend in college football. We'll
- 1:21:55Speaker 13: check in with Rob coming up at 2. We've got
- 1:21:58Speaker 13: Factor Fiction 235 and Booze News at 1245.
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: Oh, that's right.
- 1:22:03Speaker 11: Or 245, sorry.
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: Ashley's brought that to the afternoon. Yeah, I'm right. Even
- 1:22:07Speaker 3: more appropriate.
- 1:22:08Speaker 4: I was going to say, it's right just getting you
- 1:22:10Speaker 4: ready for happy hour.
- 1:22:11Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 1:22:11Speaker 4: It's a perfect timing.
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: On a Friday?
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: Yeah, it made no sense to do it in the morning.
- 1:22:14Speaker 3: She used to do it at 945 a.m.
- 1:22:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: No, she's more appropriate.
- 1:22:17Speaker 13: They can do their own thing. Listen, that's what we
- 1:22:21Speaker 13: got in the divorce settlement. Here's what you guys get, Anders.
- 1:22:25Speaker 13: I get booze, news, and Ashley. That's a win.
- 1:22:27Speaker 4: You cleaned up.
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: Before we go for the week, can you play that
- 1:22:30Speaker 3: talk back again?
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: Nope. Where's Jackson?
- 1:22:34Speaker 3: We'll get a drop out of that.
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: I will play just so you know why I turned
- 1:22:38Speaker 4: crimson and gray both at the same time. It was
- 1:22:43Speaker 4: really embarrassing. All right. I'll play it just so I'll
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: wear it, okay? I'm not hiding.
- 1:22:49Speaker 3: Also, on a side note, Jessamyn, I think you're very pretty.
- 1:22:51Speaker 3: I did not know that. I think that's very nice.
- 1:22:55Speaker 3: And he didn't know that.
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: I don't know how he found that out either.
- 1:22:59Speaker 3: Well, he didn't know that, but that's good.
- 1:23:01Speaker 11: Thank you.
- 1:23:01Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: That was really nice. That's, that's, I'm just sticking to it.
- 1:23:06Speaker 4: That was a really nice thing to say.
- 1:23:07Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:23:08Speaker 3: There you go. That was awesome.
- 1:23:10Speaker 4: Greg is just like way too into it. And I
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: didn't know I was at the end.
- 1:23:16Speaker 5: I love it.
- 1:23:16Speaker 6: I love it.
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: Thanks for listening. Thanks for making Friday a lot of fun.
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: Thanks to Coach Bartel, Coach Kinnett with a big game,
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: Mount Sinai and Bellevue tonight. If you missed it, go
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: to the iHeartRadio app or 933KJR. com.
- 1:23:26Speaker 3: Ian's up next.
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: Have a great weekend. Enjoy the Sunday night Seahawks and Chiefs.
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: I'll talk to you about it on Monday on 93.3
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: KJR FM.
