Latest / Vigilante Vibes Podcast / Ep. 263. Who is Bishop in Marvel Comics?!
Transcript
- 0:11Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks, and all the nerds between My
- 0:14Name is Megan and I'm here with another character breakdown
- 0:16today. And it is a course of mutants.
- 0:18And it is a mutant I think should be talked about way more
- 0:21than he actually is. So we're going to talk about
- 0:24Bishop. Lucas Bishop is a character I've
- 0:26wanted to make an episode about for quite some time.
- 0:28Even though he's so well known, he is still disrespectfully
- 0:31underrated and extremely underused in Marvel Comics, and
- 0:35I think it's time we put some respect on our boy's name.
- 0:38So Bishop first appeared in Marvel Comics in Uncanny X-Men
- 0:41#282 that was in September of 1991, but he was just on the
- 0:46cover and the last page, which is a super big tease.
- 0:50He actually had his first full appearance in Uncanny X-Men #283
- 0:55he was created by John Byrne and Weils Portaccio.
- 0:59Lucas Bishop was born into the kind of future that makes every
- 1:03dystopian movie look optimistic. Mutants have been shoved into
- 1:07concentration camps after a so-called mutant Messiah
- 1:10supposedly killed a million humans.
- 1:12The X-Men were mostly dead, Sentinels ruled everything, and
- 1:17humanity basically decided coexistence was a failed group
- 1:20project. Bishop and his sister Chard grew
- 1:23up in one of these camps with a giant M tattooed on their eyes.
- 1:26Like the government really said, let's make impression extra
- 1:29dramatic. His parents, Australian mutants
- 1:33Burnham and Katie, tried to survive in this nightmare world,
- 1:36but life in the camps crushed everyone.
- 1:38Eventually. Bishop watched his mother slowly
- 1:42lose hope before she died, and from a young age, he blamed the
- 1:45mutant Messiah for ruining mutant kind forever.
- 1:48So while most kids were learning multiplication tables, Bishop
- 1:52was learning generational trauma.
- 1:55Eventually, humans and mutants teamed up in the summer's
- 1:58rebellion and overthrew the Sentinels, proving once again
- 2:02that humanity only cooperates after things become
- 2:04catastrophically bad. But peace didn't magically
- 2:08happen afterward. Anti mutant hatred was still
- 2:11everywhere, mutant extremist groups were running around, and
- 2:14Bishop's parents ended up dying in the rebellion when he was
- 2:17only 7. Casual comic book childhood
- 2:20stuff, you know? Separated from his family,
- 2:23Bishop survived on the streets of Manhattan, where a mysterious
- 2:26old man called the Witness basically adopted him and taught
- 2:30him how to steal. So Bishop's childhood resume at
- 2:34this point included concentration camp, survivor,
- 2:37orphan, pickpocket, and deeply angered child.
- 2:41Very, very healthy development. 10 out of 10 would recommend.
- 2:46He eventually reunited with Chard and his grandmother in Las
- 2:49Vegas, where his grandmother constantly told stories about
- 2:52the X-Men and Xavier's dream of peace.
- 2:55Bishop honestly was not buying it at first, which is fair and I
- 2:58wouldn't have either. To him, the XSE, the mutant
- 3:02police officers trying to maintain order were basically
- 3:05the enemy while anti human mutant rebels looked like
- 3:08freedom fighters. Then one day, an extremist
- 3:11mutant named Virago grabbed Shard hostage, and little Bishop
- 3:15jumped onto her back without hesitation.
- 3:17Virago was fully ready to Merc this child before the XSC
- 3:22officer named Shershot blasted Virago first.
- 3:26That moment completely changed Bishop's worldview.
- 3:29He realized that the XSE weren't corrupt monsters, but actually
- 3:33were people trying to stop the world from falling apart.
- 3:36So naturally, Bishop decided, Yep, that's what I'm going to do
- 3:39now. Soon after, another pair of
- 3:42mutant criminals attacked Bishop and Chard while trying to save
- 3:46his sister. Bishop's mutant powers finally
- 3:48kicked in, and two XSE officers were impressed enough to recruit
- 3:53him real quick about his powers. Bishop is basically a walking
- 3:57cosmic power strip. He can absorb any kind of
- 3:59energy, magic, sound, light, psychic attacks, random
- 4:03explosions, and then fire it back however he wants.
- 4:07Energy blasts, plasma, explosions, flaming, chaos, it
- 4:11is all on the menu. But the best part?
- 4:15He can send the energy back the same way he got hit with it,
- 4:18except cranked up to you should have minded your business levels
- 4:24anyways, Bishop agreed on one condition.
- 4:26Shard comes too. Because if there's one thing
- 4:29consistent about Bishop, it's that his loyalty to his family
- 4:32is absolutely unmatched, even when comics repeatedly
- 4:36weaponized that against him. It's comics, you know?
- 4:40At the XSE Academy, Bishop trained along future psychopath
- 4:45Trevor Fitzroy, which in hindsight should have been a
- 4:47gigantic red flag. Bishop and Chard eventually
- 4:51became officer, but tragedy hit when Fitzroy indirectly
- 4:55transformed Chard into a horrifying energy draining
- 4:58monster called an M Plate. And because Marvel writers
- 5:02apparently saw Bishop smiling once and decided to punish him
- 5:05for it, Bishop was forced to kill his own sister to stop her
- 5:08suffering. Except comics really never let
- 5:12people stay dead, usually unless your name is Uncle Ben and Karen
- 5:19Page. Yep, both of them.
- 5:20They're done. Shard's consciousness got
- 5:24uploaded into a hologram projector onto Bishop's wrist,
- 5:27meaning Bishop basically walked around with a ghost Wi-Fi sister
- 5:30support for years later, while hunting Fitzroy, Bishop
- 5:34uncovered A cryptic warning from Jean Grey about a traitor among
- 5:38the X-Men survivors. Fitzroy escaped through time to
- 5:42the X Men's present era, and Bishop chased him there with two
- 5:45friends, Malcolm and Randall, fully aware they had no home.
- 5:49Malcolm and Randall died during the mission, and Bishop got
- 5:53wrecked physically and emotionally, and somehow this
- 5:56still wasn't the worst week of his life.
- 5:58He ended up joining the X-Men, though his methods were
- 6:02aggressive. Like if an alarm went off and
- 6:06Wolverine might say sneaked and Cyclops might make a plan,
- 6:10Bishop would simply shoot through three walls because the
- 6:12doors were apparently optional in his mind, to put it in
- 6:15perspective. Then came time travel disasters,
- 6:19alternate timelines, the Age of Apocalypse.
- 6:22You might have heard of it. Chronal energy nonsense and
- 6:26enough reality rewrites to give anyone a migraine.
- 6:29Bishop became one of the few people who remembered the real
- 6:32timeline during the Age of Apocalypse, meaning he basically
- 6:35carried the burden of knowing the world was fundamentally
- 6:38wrong while everyone else acted normal.
- 6:41Imagine being the only person who remembers the group project
- 6:44got deleted. So he fought alongside the X-Men
- 6:51for years after that, surviving space missions, alien prison,
- 6:55apocalypse and every imaginal cosmic problem.
- 7:00But then came the moment that absolutely broke him.
- 7:03After M day. It always goes back to M day
- 7:06with the mutants. Which it should.
- 7:07It's kind of a big deal. It's when almost all mutants
- 7:10lost their powers that thinks to the Scarlet Witch.
- 7:13The first mutant baby born afterward appeared.
- 7:16Bishop became convinced she was the same mutant Messiah from his
- 7:20future, the one responsible for the death of millions of humans
- 7:24and the destruction of mutant kind.
- 7:26That baby was Hope Summers, and Bishop absolutely lost it.
- 7:31He sabotaged Sentinels, destroyed the Xavier Institute,
- 7:34tried to Merck Hope as an infant as a baby, shot at Cable,
- 7:39accidentally shot Professor Xavier in the head instead.
- 7:42Which is fine, I'm good with it. Stole time travel tech and spent
- 7:46literal years chasing Cable and Hope across history like the
- 7:50world's angriest Terminator. The worst part is, the more he
- 7:54tried to stop the future, the more suffering he caused.
- 7:58Entire timelines got obliterated because Bishop convinced himself
- 8:01that those people weren't real yet anyway.
- 8:04At one point he even teamed up with Strife, which is basically
- 8:07the mutant equivalent of saying I can make worse decisions
- 8:10actually. And he still failed.
- 8:13Cable stranded him thousands of years in the future with No Way
- 8:16Home, leaving Bishop alone in a wasteland with nothing except
- 8:19regret and enough motional baggage to collapse a star.
- 8:23That's where everything finally changed.
- 8:26A group called the Order saved him and gave him a home and
- 8:30helped him rebuild his life hunting monsters called the
- 8:32Revenants. For the first time in forever,
- 8:36Bishop stopped running on rage alone.
- 8:39Then he met a possessed little girl named Amber during a hunt,
- 8:42and when she begged him not to kill her, he hesitated.
- 8:46That hesitation mattered because for years, Bishop believes
- 8:50survival meant making the hard choice.
- 8:52Don't matter the cost. Kill the threat, stop the
- 8:54future. Sacrifice who you have to.
- 8:56But in that moment he realized he'd become the very thing he
- 8:59hated, someone willing to destroy innocence in the name of
- 9:02fear. Eventually he returned to the
- 9:05present, got possessed by a demon bear because apparently
- 9:09the universe still was not done hazing him, fought X Force and
- 9:13had his memories tampered with, and finally confronted the
- 9:16damage he caused. Hope Summers herself eventually
- 9:19had the chance to kill him for everything he'd done to her, and
- 9:23she chose not to. That mercy broke through
- 9:26whatever years of war could not. Since then, Bishop has built
- 9:31himself piece by piece, brick by brick.
- 9:34He fought alongside the X-Men again, survived alternate
- 9:37realities, got trapped in worlds where love itself is illegal,
- 9:41and eventually rose to become one of Kirkowa's top military
- 9:45leaders and great captains. At his core, Bishop's story is
- 9:49about survival, guilt, and redemption.
- 9:52He started as a man trying to stop for the future from
- 9:55destroying mutant kind, only to become dangerously close to the
- 9:58very thing he feared. What makes Bishop such a
- 10:02compelling character, for me at least, isn't that he's perfect.
- 10:05It isn't that he's an absolute Angel.
- 10:07It's because he actually isn't. He absolutely is not.
- 10:11This man has made catastrophically bad decisions.
- 10:14But Bishop is what happens when someone is shaped entirely by
- 10:17trauma, fear, and survival, then spends the rest of their life
- 10:21trying to crawl back from the edge of becoming a monster.
- 10:23He's not a clean cut hero who always makes the right decision.
- 10:27He's the guy who's seen the worst possible future, carried
- 10:30it on his back for years, lost himself trying to stop it, and
- 10:34then kept fighting anyways. Lucas Bishop isn't inspiring
- 10:37because he never fell. He's inspiring because after
- 10:41falling harder than almost anyone in the X-Men world, he
- 10:44still found a way to stand back up.
- 10:47So that is Lucas Bishop. I think he's a fantastic
- 10:50character. He has, like all X-Men, like all
- 10:53mutants, they have such a tragic back story and it's such a
- 10:57tragic upbringing, and I dig that about them.
- 11:02Maybe it's me, maybe I'm the problem.
- 11:05I don't know. So that is my character
- 11:08breakdown for Bishop. I hope you enjoyed it.
- 11:09I hope you'll like and subscribe, and I hope you have a
- 11:12marvelous day.
