- 0:13Speaker 1: Hey guys, and welcome back to another episode of Dirty Rush.
- 0:16Speaker 1: My name is Gia Judice, and today we're taking a
- 0:19Speaker 1: walk down memory Lane with a group of graduating seniors
- 0:22Speaker 1: to tell us what they wish they knew before joining
- 0:25Speaker 1: a sorority.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Hi, guys, how's it going good? How are you good?
- 0:31Speaker 3: So?
- 0:32Speaker 2: What are all your names?
- 0:33Speaker 4: I'm Alex, I'm Reese, and I'm Ellie.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Nice to meet you guys. So what's school do you
- 0:38Speaker 2: guys go to?
- 0:39Speaker 4: We all go to kel poly San Luis obispo so fun.
- 0:43Speaker 2: And what are you guys studying?
- 0:46Speaker 3: Start? Yeah, I'm political science.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Oh, Polly Side, that's hard.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Yeah, it was hard.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I was a criminal justice major, so I had to
- 0:55Speaker 1: definitely take a couple of poly side classes.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Criminal justice classes were interesting to.
- 1:00Speaker 1: But they're so fun, Like they're not that hard, They're
- 1:02Speaker 1: just like interesting. It's like you're intrigued by everything Polysai is.
- 1:07Speaker 1: You're learning about all the history and it's a lot
- 1:09Speaker 1: of reading. And that was definitely not my forte.
- 1:13Speaker 4: Yeah, and then we're both communications.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Oh nice, are you guys excited to graduate?
- 1:18Speaker 5: So we all actually graduated early, but we're we're walk
- 1:22Speaker 5: in June.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, congratulations, Yeah, thank you.
- 1:28Speaker 2: So what sorority were you guys in.
- 1:31Speaker 4: We're all actually in yeah Alpha ky Omega.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Oh so fun. Okay.
- 1:37Speaker 1: So did grief life play a big role in your
- 1:41Speaker 1: college experience?
- 1:42Speaker 5: I would say it did, not, like enough to exile
- 1:47Speaker 5: or isolate from other friends or other girls and other
- 1:50Speaker 5: sororities or even without, but I would say that it
- 1:52Speaker 5: definitely did in the sense that it brought me closer
- 1:55Speaker 5: to girls in different ages. So I like the family
- 1:59Speaker 5: aspect of it I really dove into, and I still
- 2:02Speaker 5: have those friendships with like my g Big and Big,
- 2:04Speaker 5: and I feel like, even recently, with like the job
- 2:07Speaker 5: search aspect of it all, having those connections with girls
- 2:10Speaker 5: that are graduated like a year or two years above
- 2:13Speaker 5: really helped because I would talk to them and like
- 2:15Speaker 5: all of their friends and sort of figure out what
- 2:18Speaker 5: they liked two years postgrad and then that really helped
- 2:21Speaker 5: to discover what I wanted. So in that sense, I
- 2:24Speaker 5: feel like I really appreciated being in that community and
- 2:27Speaker 5: having those resources.
- 2:29Speaker 2: It really is so helpful after graduation.
- 2:32Speaker 5: Especially because it didn't seem like they were scary to
- 2:35Speaker 5: talk to because I was in like a sorority safe
- 2:38Speaker 5: like space with them last time I saw them, so
- 2:41Speaker 5: asking them questions about how to go into it, I
- 2:43Speaker 5: didn't feel like I had to put on a front
- 2:45Speaker 5: and say I knew exactly what I wanted. I more
- 2:48Speaker 5: so was able to be transparent with them because they
- 2:51Speaker 5: knew me as someone that we already had that foundation with.
- 2:54Speaker 1: You know, thinking back to when you guys were in
- 2:57Speaker 1: high school, did Greek play a part in the decision
- 3:02Speaker 1: making process of you guys choosing what school you wanted
- 3:04Speaker 1: to go to?
- 3:05Speaker 3: For me, not really. I feel like my sister also
- 3:09Speaker 3: went to cal Poly, so I like saw her experience
- 3:12Speaker 3: and I just loved like this friends that she made,
- 3:15Speaker 3: and I felt like I wanted to like make those
- 3:17Speaker 3: same kind of connections. So that kind of played a
- 3:21Speaker 3: part in my decision to go to cal Paly.
- 3:24Speaker 6: I remember, because I never wanted to go out of
- 3:27Speaker 6: state for college, Like I was very set I'm from California,
- 3:30Speaker 6: and I said, I'm going to school in California. And
- 3:31Speaker 6: I remember a lot of people from my high school.
- 3:33Speaker 6: Wanted to go to SDSU because it's kind of like
- 3:35Speaker 6: the biggest sorority school in art in like in California,
- 3:40Speaker 6: and so I remember like thinking like not being very
- 3:43Speaker 6: familiar with like the whole sorority thing and like seeing
- 3:45Speaker 6: it just from like what I knew from like social
- 3:47Speaker 6: media or TikTok or whatever, and that being like between
- 3:51Speaker 6: SDSU and when I got into cal Poly, I was like,
- 3:53Speaker 6: oh my gosh, I don't know like what I wanted
- 3:54Speaker 6: to be in a sorority. This is like the Greek
- 3:55Speaker 6: high school. This is the party school. And I feel
- 3:57Speaker 6: like kind of having to almost profile yourself before where
- 4:00Speaker 6: you even pick a college, like wanting to know whether
- 4:02Speaker 6: or not you're going to do that. It was like
- 4:04Speaker 6: kind of a weird experience for sure.
- 4:06Speaker 4: No, yeah, not think similar thing.
- 4:08Speaker 5: I didn't really think about it when deciding to go
- 4:11Speaker 5: into school, But I think after I made the decision
- 4:14Speaker 5: about Paul is when I started to think about, like, oh,
- 4:16Speaker 5: do I want to be in a sorority once I
- 4:18Speaker 5: get there?
- 4:19Speaker 2: Reese.
- 4:20Speaker 1: That is, I feel like pretty normal when you are
- 4:22Speaker 1: going when you're entering college, then that's when you think
- 4:26Speaker 1: about it. But I mean, it really is crazy, especially
- 4:29Speaker 1: when you think about all the schools in the South,
- 4:31Speaker 1: like you were saying on social media and seeing how
- 4:34Speaker 1: you know, looking at Bama Rush and just seeing how
- 4:37Speaker 1: how much more serious other schools really take sorority in
- 4:40Speaker 1: Greek life. You have to think about that when you're
- 4:43Speaker 1: a senior going into college. Whereas when I went into college,
- 4:47Speaker 1: sure I knew what sororities were, I knew they existed.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I knew this might be a fun thing to do
- 4:52Speaker 1: once I entered school, but I never to hear now
- 4:57Speaker 1: doing this podcast, the extent and lengths that girls go
- 5:00Speaker 1: to as seniors before entering college to prepare for what sorority.
- 5:04Speaker 2: They want to be in.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I just I thought, I just it was crazy to
- 5:09Speaker 1: me because that wasn't my experience.
- 5:11Speaker 5: I feel like it really blew up after our year
- 5:14Speaker 5: because we are the same year as like Kylin Darnell
- 5:17Speaker 5: at Bama.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Yeah, she's so sweet, like.
- 5:19Speaker 5: Carved her path and made that her whole thing. Every
- 5:22Speaker 5: year after that, I think it got a bigger and
- 5:24Speaker 5: bigger deal. So we were sort of the last year
- 5:27Speaker 5: before it started to really implicate that decision and make
- 5:31Speaker 5: people think about that as seniors.
- 5:34Speaker 6: I also feel like just recruitment in general has like
- 5:37Speaker 6: like a sorority life, and everything is totally taken on
- 5:40Speaker 6: a life of its own, like way more so than
- 5:42Speaker 6: I think it was ever intended to, so that like
- 5:44Speaker 6: pressure is so much heavier on like the years younger
- 5:47Speaker 6: than us and even ourlier than it probably was for
- 5:50Speaker 6: like my mom or with my sisters when they were
- 5:52Speaker 6: in rushing.
- 5:54Speaker 1: One hundred percent, how did you guys prepare for rush?
- 5:58Speaker 1: What would you do differently knowing what you know now?
- 6:01Speaker 5: I feel like for cal Poly, what we were told
- 6:04Speaker 5: is that it was way more relaxed than any other school,
- 6:07Speaker 5: which obviously going through the process, I was so scared
- 6:11Speaker 5: because sort of similar to how she had a sister
- 6:14Speaker 5: at this school, I had a really close family friend
- 6:16Speaker 5: that was also in a sorority at this school, and
- 6:19Speaker 5: so talking to her about the process really helped. But
- 6:22Speaker 5: she I always like idolized her and looked up to
- 6:25Speaker 5: her because she was so cool. But she was telling
- 6:29Speaker 5: me how she got dropped from a few sororities, and
- 6:32Speaker 5: so I was like, oh, my goodness, if you can
- 6:33Speaker 5: get dropped like I am.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Screwed, And that made me scared, and.
- 6:38Speaker 5: So I think I didn't really know how to prep,
- 6:41Speaker 5: but I was definitely frightened, and I was just like,
- 6:44Speaker 5: how if I'm so nervous going into the conversations, how
- 6:46Speaker 5: can I like put my best foot forward.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:50Speaker 4: I would like call.
- 6:50Speaker 3: My sister every day before rush, which like I'd be
- 6:54Speaker 3: like what do I do like and stuff like that,
- 6:56Speaker 3: but she was like a big help and like it
- 6:58Speaker 3: was just nice to know that it would work out,
- 7:01Speaker 3: like seeing like the older girls and being like okay,
- 7:04Speaker 3: like they have their lives together, like hopefully it'll work out.
- 7:07Speaker 4: For me too.
- 7:08Speaker 2: No, definitely, my little sisters called me too. It was
- 7:11Speaker 2: like the sweetest thing.
- 7:13Speaker 7: I feel like I did very minimal prep. I also
- 7:17Speaker 7: rushed for context.
- 7:18Speaker 6: I rushed as a sophomore, like I joined our sorority
- 7:21Speaker 6: sophomore year. But when I did rush freshman year, I
- 7:24Speaker 6: remember the process. I didn't do any research or anything,
- 7:27Speaker 6: like I just sort of went in blind, and I
- 7:28Speaker 6: think it was significantly more overwhelming, just because I was
- 7:32Speaker 6: really had no idea what was going on, and so
- 7:34Speaker 6: I think I would have maybe phoned a friend and
- 7:37Speaker 6: like gotten a little bit of context or like understanding
- 7:40Speaker 6: of what was going on, because it was very overwhelming,
- 7:42Speaker 6: and it was just like every like debriefing with everybody
- 7:44Speaker 6: in the dorms and all the different things. I remember
- 7:46Speaker 6: being like very anxious and like wishing that I'd prepare
- 7:48Speaker 6: a little bit more.
- 7:49Speaker 1: No for sure, I mean, did you transfer into the
- 7:52Speaker 1: school sophomore year or you were you there freshman.
- 7:55Speaker 7: Year, the recruitment freshman year or through part of it?
- 7:58Speaker 6: And then I got sick and then I never joined
- 8:00Speaker 6: Like during the second week, I like mono and I
- 8:01Speaker 6: couldn't talk. So I never joined a sorority. And then
- 8:05Speaker 6: I re rushed sophomore year. I went through more more
- 8:07Speaker 6: groupment again because we don't do a whole cob is
- 8:09Speaker 6: like not a huge thing at Cowbality.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Okay, got it?
- 8:12Speaker 1: So I mean, but rushing as a sophomore, And because
- 8:15Speaker 1: you already kind of rushed as a freshman, people obviously
- 8:19Speaker 1: started to get to know you. Probably throughout your school
- 8:22Speaker 1: year as a freshman. Did anyone come up to you
- 8:25Speaker 1: and say, oh, I want you to be at my sorority,
- 8:27Speaker 1: please rush, please rush sophomore year? Like, did that make
- 8:30Speaker 1: you want to rush even more? Or was it because
- 8:33Speaker 1: all of your friends were in one?
- 8:35Speaker 6: I think these girls were we have like a big
- 8:37Speaker 6: group of all of us that were friends, and I
- 8:39Speaker 6: was friends with them, and they weren't necessarily like rush,
- 8:41Speaker 6: we want you in Akyo, but they were like you
- 8:43Speaker 6: should go through the process and like we're here if.
- 8:45Speaker 7: You need anything.
- 8:46Speaker 6: And I had definitely been like I had been to
- 8:48Speaker 6: formals with my roommate, and I was like definitely exposed
- 8:51Speaker 6: to those sorority world. And once I like understood what
- 8:53Speaker 6: was going on, I just think back to my freshman
- 8:55Speaker 6: year brain and how I had no idea and the
- 8:56Speaker 6: whole thing felt so foreign. And then just like the
- 8:59Speaker 6: little bit of context had of like, oh, these are
- 9:00Speaker 6: what the houses are, this is like how the process works.
- 9:03Speaker 7: It made rushing sophomore year so much easier.
- 9:06Speaker 5: I'm sure it was also funny because we were all
- 9:08Speaker 5: like such good friends at the point when she was
- 9:11Speaker 5: rushing the second time around, and lived literally right across
- 9:14Speaker 5: from each other, and like we would see each other
- 9:16Speaker 5: during the rounds, but like from the different point of view,
- 9:20Speaker 5: so we would be like the recruiters. And then I
- 9:22Speaker 5: went saw her walking through the house and I was like, oh, funny,
- 9:26Speaker 5: can't you can't you can't do anything. But I was
- 9:28Speaker 5: just like smiling at her.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I was like, I'm sure they didn't let you recruit her, right, No, no, no, no,
- 9:35Speaker 1: it was funny. Did you guys have an idea of
- 9:53Speaker 1: what house you wanted before rushing and did that impact
- 9:56Speaker 1: your rushing process, like in a positive or negative way?
- 10:00Speaker 4: Yeah, So I feel like for us it might be
- 10:02Speaker 4: kind of similar.
- 10:03Speaker 5: So the friend I had before, I always wanted to
- 10:06Speaker 5: be in hers just because I had heard maybe like
- 10:09Speaker 5: horror stories of people putting on fronts during recruitment, and
- 10:12Speaker 5: I was like, I don't know if this is like
- 10:14Speaker 5: real the conversations I'm having, But since I know this
- 10:16Speaker 5: friend of mine so dearly, I trust her judgment, So
- 10:20Speaker 5: that kind of like put a bias over my perspective.
- 10:23Speaker 5: I obviously tried to have an open mind and I
- 10:25Speaker 5: didn't let it totally skew my process, but that definitely
- 10:30Speaker 5: I had like one that stood out to me from
- 10:32Speaker 5: the get go, and then I don't know if that's.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Yeah, that was pretty similar, just because like seeing my
- 10:38Speaker 3: sister and her friends, like they were groups of people
- 10:40Speaker 3: that I just really liked, and so I kind of
- 10:44Speaker 3: going into it was had that house in mind, but
- 10:47Speaker 3: it definitely didn't stop me from like thinking about all
- 10:50Speaker 3: of them as a whole and like seeing where I
- 10:53Speaker 3: personally liked better.
- 10:55Speaker 6: I would say when I rushed my freshman year like.
- 10:59Speaker 7: That, because I did. We did we do it in weekends,
- 11:01Speaker 7: so during the first weekend do like I think it's
- 11:04Speaker 7: like two days or three days.
- 11:05Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 11:06Speaker 4: I didn't even remember.
- 11:07Speaker 6: But when I went through it the first time, I
- 11:09Speaker 6: remember like connecting so much with the girl that the
- 11:11Speaker 6: girls that I was talking to in the houses and
- 11:13Speaker 6: like having a very hard time separating myself from like
- 11:16Speaker 6: the process. So I would like be talking to the
- 11:18Speaker 6: girl and I'm like I would leave and I see
- 11:20Speaker 6: myself in the sorority and I'm like I see all
- 11:21Speaker 6: the girls that are in the room that are like
- 11:23Speaker 6: these are my best friends whatever, and then feeling like
- 11:25Speaker 6: so devastated when like I would get dropped from a house.
- 11:28Speaker 6: And I think there was definitely too specifically that I had,
- 11:31Speaker 6: like my first time rushing where I was like absolutely
- 11:34Speaker 6: devastated that I didn't when I like dropped out of
- 11:37Speaker 6: the process and everything because I like totally had it
- 11:39Speaker 6: in mine.
- 11:39Speaker 7: I was like, I see myself here whatever.
- 11:41Speaker 5: But yeah, the dropping thing is crazy, like I feel
- 11:44Speaker 5: like a never experienced.
- 11:46Speaker 6: Rejection like that, Like it's horrible.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Eighteen Yeah, how many sororities does your school have.
- 11:56Speaker 4: Or no one, We're like eighteen years old, there's no I.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Thought you were saying you your school eighteen sororities. I
- 12:01Speaker 2: was like, oh my goodness.
- 12:02Speaker 4: I think is there nine? I think there's nine, But okay.
- 12:07Speaker 5: Our rush process is before school actually starts, so it's
- 12:11Speaker 5: the first thing you're introduced to after getting dropped off
- 12:14Speaker 5: by your parents, and then you have like a fifteen
- 12:17Speaker 5: minute conversation for the first round and you're like, that
- 12:19Speaker 5: was great. Those girls seem great. And then you don't
- 12:22Speaker 5: get the house back the next thing. You're like, wait, yeah, yeah.
- 12:26Speaker 2: I mean you're right.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I mean your parents drop you off. It's absolutely heartbreaking.
- 12:31Speaker 1: I mean I remember freshman year. I was like crying,
- 12:33Speaker 1: like I was going to be gone for years. Meanwhile,
- 12:35Speaker 1: I was forty five minutes away from home, but it
- 12:39Speaker 1: was like the worst day of my life, like best
- 12:41Speaker 1: and worst. And then you're right, like rushing your sorority
- 12:44Speaker 1: and then getting rejected, You're like, great, this is exactly
- 12:47Speaker 1: what I needed. This is really going to you know,
- 12:49Speaker 1: boost my confidence starting school, Like.
- 12:52Speaker 4: One thing after another, you're like, what else, What's next?
- 12:57Speaker 1: How did you guys navigate sharing things with your friends
- 13:00Speaker 1: during rush? Did you keep things private or were you
- 13:02Speaker 1: open during the process and talk to your friends about things.
- 13:06Speaker 5: I think we were supposed to be we were supposed
- 13:08Speaker 5: to be quiet, but we were in like a very
- 13:13Speaker 5: social dorm, and I think that it's hard to come
- 13:16Speaker 5: across like not like you're trying to gatekeep anything while
- 13:20Speaker 5: not sharing things when you're also trying to make friends.
- 13:23Speaker 5: So I didn't really prioritize the secrecy part of it.
- 13:26Speaker 5: I really prioritized like trying to make friends, and so
- 13:29Speaker 5: I was just being open with everyone. And I think
- 13:32Speaker 5: that when it really takes like being a somewhat decent
- 13:36Speaker 5: judge of character to understand like who is telling you
- 13:39Speaker 5: things to like lead you the right way, and who's
- 13:41Speaker 5: telling you things to sort of like deter you and
- 13:43Speaker 5: like make themselves have a better chance at something, which
- 13:46Speaker 5: is also hard to tell when you're a freshly eighteen
- 13:48Speaker 5: year old. But yeah, I definitely talked to like a
- 13:52Speaker 5: lot of friends during the process, and it didn't really
- 13:57Speaker 5: detriment my experience because I was really lucky to talk
- 14:00Speaker 5: to great people, but I'm sure that it could for
- 14:03Speaker 5: people that weren't so lucky, like if people were telling
- 14:06Speaker 5: them the wrong things, maybe, But I don't know if you.
- 14:08Speaker 6: Guys had any I feel like we, like, at least
- 14:12Speaker 6: in my experience, like, like she said, we were in
- 14:14Speaker 6: the same dorm, so we lived in a very like
- 14:15Speaker 6: social drum. I remember like every single night after rush,
- 14:18Speaker 6: everybody would like sit in the hallway and we would all.
- 14:20Speaker 7: Talk about like talk to or whatever, which.
- 14:23Speaker 6: Probably we weren't supposed to be doing, and like we
- 14:25Speaker 6: would like look out the people and like which also
- 14:29Speaker 6: definitely not a lot of tell I shouldn't say that,
- 14:31Speaker 6: but like I would. I totally remember that, or even
- 14:33Speaker 6: when I was rushing as a soft like sophomore year,
- 14:36Speaker 6: I would like, I feel like it was very helpful
- 14:38Speaker 6: to talk to my roommates about everything that I was
- 14:40Speaker 6: experiencing and like, yeah, I don't know, it's a very
- 14:42Speaker 6: foreign process. So like knowing that you're like have other
- 14:45Speaker 6: people who are in it with you, I think is
- 14:47Speaker 6: like a trauma bond almos.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Yeah, Like I would tell everything in my roommate and
- 14:51Speaker 3: she would also tell me, and it was just kind
- 14:53Speaker 3: of like it would be like sad when you got dropped,
- 14:56Speaker 3: because I'd feel like embarrassed, being like, oh, well, that
- 14:58Speaker 3: house dropped me, and then I would feel like, oh, like,
- 15:01Speaker 3: is this person gonna think that, like I'm not like.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Great or cool? But I don't know.
- 15:07Speaker 3: It wasn't really like that for me, which was good,
- 15:09Speaker 3: but I'm sure I feel like it could have been
- 15:11Speaker 3: for some people.
- 15:12Speaker 5: Yeah, But I also think that it helped with the
- 15:14Speaker 5: like embarrassment factor of it, because like if you're saying, oh,
- 15:17Speaker 5: I got dropped, and then hearing that validation that other
- 15:20Speaker 5: people also are getting dropped, You're like, okay, and I
- 15:22Speaker 5: love you already. So I'm sure it's just like the process,
- 15:25Speaker 5: not anything personal.
- 15:28Speaker 1: What is your biggest piece of advice to any p
- 15:30Speaker 1: and ms that are going to go through the rush process.
- 15:34Speaker 5: I don't know, it's so weird because it always is
- 15:38Speaker 5: the like be yourself, but I guess just knowing that
- 15:43Speaker 5: the person you're talking to is in the same boat
- 15:46Speaker 5: with like having these sort of at times can feel
- 15:49Speaker 5: scripted conversations and just that neither of you want it
- 15:52Speaker 5: to feel scripted, but just both like addressing maybe the
- 15:56Speaker 5: nerves at the beginning of a conversation if you're feeling
- 15:59Speaker 5: them could be good to say like at the beginning,
- 16:02Speaker 5: like I'm so nervous, but I'm so excited to be here,
- 16:04Speaker 5: and just maybe that can make the conversation go a
- 16:06Speaker 5: little bit like smoother and less scripted.
- 16:09Speaker 4: That's what I don't know, right.
- 16:11Speaker 6: I feel like I would say, just like embrace the process,
- 16:14Speaker 6: because like, having gone through it twice, I have like
- 16:18Speaker 6: never I think it's like the best like exposure therapy
- 16:21Speaker 6: to having to meet a million people, having to have
- 16:23Speaker 6: a conversation almost coming up with like an elevator pitch
- 16:26Speaker 6: about yourself.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Literally give me a thirty second elevator pitch.
- 16:30Speaker 6: By being in those conversations, like you get the opportunity
- 16:33Speaker 6: to practice like have it like I'm talking to all
- 16:36Speaker 6: those people. There's no other time that you're going to
- 16:38Speaker 6: be exposed to that many people and like learn things
- 16:40Speaker 6: from other people. And even in like now being a
- 16:42Speaker 6: senior and going through interviews and stuff like that, I
- 16:45Speaker 6: feel like I almost have an advantage to other people
- 16:47Speaker 6: who didn't have to go through it twice because I'm
- 16:49Speaker 6: like I'm so comfortable and familiar with just like having
- 16:52Speaker 6: to come up with a conversation, coming up with small
- 16:53Speaker 6: talk like those kinds of things. So I think that's
- 16:56Speaker 6: just embrace the process, go through it, even if you
- 16:58Speaker 6: don't know if you want to be in a sourority,
- 17:00Speaker 6: like yeah, yeah.
- 17:01Speaker 3: And I remember also thinking like the girls that were
- 17:04Speaker 3: like recruiting me were like I don't know, I would
- 17:07Speaker 3: think that they were just like so much older and
- 17:09Speaker 3: like so much more like whys and stuff, but the
- 17:11Speaker 3: reality is like they are just like one year older
- 17:14Speaker 3: or like maybe two, and like they just like they're
- 17:17Speaker 3: also just as nervous and like just I guess, yeah,
- 17:20Speaker 3: like weud just be yourself because I just feel like
- 17:23Speaker 3: it you'll get the house that like you're meant to get,
- 17:26Speaker 3: I guess, and you shouldn't like fake a persona to
- 17:29Speaker 3: like get one that wouldn't fit you in the long run.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Do you guys have any rush regrets?
- 17:35Speaker 4: Oh, I have like a regret.
- 17:38Speaker 5: On the other side, I was recruiting someone and I
- 17:42Speaker 5: totally messed up because it was one of the last
- 17:45Speaker 5: houses and I was so tired or last houses for
- 17:48Speaker 5: them we stay in the same house, but I was
- 17:50Speaker 5: so tired.
- 17:51Speaker 4: And then I totally I asked.
- 17:53Speaker 5: Her, I think, like what her major was, and she
- 17:55Speaker 5: went on this like long spiel and we started having
- 17:57Speaker 5: a casual like back and forth, and then I was
- 17:59Speaker 5: trying to get back on my line of questioning and
- 18:01Speaker 5: I asked the exact same question again and then she
- 18:03Speaker 5: started answering, and when she answered, I was like, oh.
- 18:06Speaker 5: And then I like put my head in my hands
- 18:08Speaker 5: and I was like, I'm so sorry.
- 18:10Speaker 4: I a great time here. I swear I'm just like tired.
- 18:14Speaker 5: But then it was just it made the whole thing
- 18:16Speaker 5: seem more authentic, So it was fine, but I I
- 18:19Speaker 5: feel like that could have been like one thing that
- 18:21Speaker 5: I could have done better.
- 18:25Speaker 6: I feel like having gone through it twice, like I
- 18:30Speaker 6: wish that I had just kept like everyone always says,
- 18:33Speaker 6: like keep an open mind, but I feel like there
- 18:35Speaker 6: were definitely some like houses that I wrote off in
- 18:38Speaker 6: my head just because I was like, oh, I don't
- 18:40Speaker 6: you know, I don't this isn't like this doesn't seem
- 18:43Speaker 6: like it would be my vibe based on what I was.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Told and also probably what you witnessed freshman year, right right.
- 18:49Speaker 6: And so I think like I'm so grateful honestly that
- 18:52Speaker 6: I went through it a second time, because if I
- 18:53Speaker 6: had stuck with like what my perception of the sororities
- 18:56Speaker 6: just based on having like seen them very minimally.
- 18:59Speaker 7: I think I'm might have ended up freshman.
- 19:01Speaker 6: Year in a house that wasn't like I wasn't even considered,
- 19:03Speaker 6: I wasn't really like, AKO wasn't one of the ones
- 19:05Speaker 6: that I was necessarily like considering super heavily freshman year.
- 19:08Speaker 7: And I couldn't be happier being here now.
- 19:09Speaker 8: So, yeah, what was midday like for you guys?
- 19:28Speaker 4: It was fun?
- 19:28Speaker 5: But I lost my key to my dorm running to
- 19:34Speaker 5: like we run back to the house from run home, Yeah,
- 19:37Speaker 5: and I couldn't even make it past the grass because
- 19:40Speaker 5: I lost my dorm key and you couldn't get into it.
- 19:42Speaker 5: So I had like some girls stayed back with me
- 19:45Speaker 5: and I looked in the grass and then I got
- 19:46Speaker 5: there like twenty minutes later.
- 19:48Speaker 4: But so it was ok, not great in that sense,
- 19:53Speaker 4: but it was fun.
- 19:54Speaker 5: Once we got to the house, there was just so
- 19:56Speaker 5: much energy and I felt like such an adrenaline high.
- 19:59Speaker 4: Honestly, I was WHOA Okay, And.
- 20:01Speaker 3: You feel just so like welcome because all the girls
- 20:04Speaker 3: that you like talk to, they're just like so happy
- 20:06Speaker 3: to see you.
- 20:07Speaker 6: And you're like, yay, I had a different experience freshman
- 20:12Speaker 6: year for sure, because I think it was like every
- 20:14Speaker 6: we lived in a very social dorm, so everybody on
- 20:16Speaker 6: the floor was gone at their midday and then they
- 20:19Speaker 6: all came back with their like rush crush or whatever.
- 20:22Speaker 6: And I was like, I remember there was one girl
- 20:24Speaker 6: who got dropped like from this she would suicide bidded
- 20:28Speaker 6: one sorority and she it was her birthday on mid
- 20:30Speaker 6: day and she got dropped mourning.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Out, Oh my god, that's horrible, Like.
- 20:34Speaker 6: We're eating donuts on the floor of our door, but
- 20:36Speaker 6: she was like crying and we were just like sitting
- 20:38Speaker 6: there and I remember be feeling like so left out
- 20:40Speaker 6: and being like, oh my god, this is gonna be
- 20:42Speaker 6: awful and I'm never gonna recover from this experience, and
- 20:44Speaker 6: my college is like screwed. And then now being here,
- 20:46Speaker 6: I'm like, that was the stupidest thing ever because you
- 20:48Speaker 6: totally come back from it and it's fine. So back
- 20:51Speaker 6: to the advice thing, actually, like you will you will
- 20:54Speaker 6: be where you need to be. As for piano, you
- 20:55Speaker 6: will be where you need to be and it'll all
- 20:57Speaker 6: work out, even if it feels awful, like the moment,
- 21:00Speaker 6: but software was great.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Do you guys remember the first time you met each other?
- 21:06Speaker 1: Are there any fun first time meeting stories that you
- 21:09Speaker 1: can share.
- 21:11Speaker 3: I don't even remember. Well, we knew each other in
- 21:13Speaker 3: high school. Yeah, but I like don't remember when we I.
- 21:18Speaker 7: Don't even know how we were in.
- 21:20Speaker 5: We had a class together because since we're the same major,
- 21:23Speaker 5: we me and Ellie had a class together, and she
- 21:27Speaker 5: I thought she was so cool because she was you're
- 21:28Speaker 5: not allowed to have cars the first year, and she
- 21:31Speaker 5: had had.
- 21:31Speaker 2: A car so she would drive you guys to class.
- 21:35Speaker 5: We were in like a group project, and she was like,
- 21:37Speaker 5: let's go instead of studying at the library, let's go
- 21:40Speaker 5: study at a coffee shop downtown.
- 21:41Speaker 4: I can drive.
- 21:42Speaker 5: And I was like, okay, like let's go. I'm gonna
- 21:46Speaker 5: get off campus. And so I just thought you were
- 21:48Speaker 5: really cool. And you would always talk about like going
- 21:51Speaker 5: to UCSB a lot, and I was like, oh my gosh,
- 21:53Speaker 5: she doesn't even need to stay here, like she's like
- 21:56Speaker 5: traveling and she has a car and she's so cool.
- 21:58Speaker 7: But we had a class together. I don't even remember
- 22:02Speaker 7: meeting you.
- 22:04Speaker 6: Yeah, but I feel like, just like in Akio in general,
- 22:08Speaker 6: like I wasn't as close like I had knew rees
- 22:11Speaker 6: from class. I knew all of them, but when I
- 22:12Speaker 6: joined AKIO, I remember, I think it was bid midnight
- 22:16Speaker 6: or something. You guys like they all like wouldn't let
- 22:19Speaker 6: me go to anything. Like when I had to go
- 22:20Speaker 6: to like meetings and stuff, they were all like so
- 22:22Speaker 6: welcoming and so helpful because we lived across the street
- 22:24Speaker 6: from each other my sophomore year and so I would
- 22:26Speaker 6: always feel kind of like out, like a little bit
- 22:29Speaker 6: out of the group because I was like in the
- 22:30Speaker 6: PC below them, so I would have to go to
- 22:32Speaker 6: my meetings and stuff. But even during the initiation or
- 22:35Speaker 6: like our prep week and everything, like, they would always
- 22:38Speaker 6: make me feel super welcome and like come. And I
- 22:40Speaker 6: remember the first time like all being at the house
- 22:42Speaker 6: together like on midnight. It was like so exciting and
- 22:44Speaker 6: so fun.
- 22:45Speaker 7: And yeah, I don't.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Know what was your guys level of involvement in your sorority.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Did you guys play a role on EXEC or a
- 22:53Speaker 1: role during recruitment?
- 22:55Speaker 5: Yeah, so I was on EXEC last year. It was
- 22:59Speaker 5: the school year, so last January to this January, and
- 23:02Speaker 5: I was vice president of public Relations and Marketing, So
- 23:06Speaker 5: I did all of the like merchandising and then social
- 23:09Speaker 5: media's and stuff, and I had so much fun doing that,
- 23:12Speaker 5: and that definitely connected me to the whole sorority. Because
- 23:15Speaker 5: you had to look everyone up on Instagram every day.
- 23:18Speaker 4: I felt like a stalker.
- 23:21Speaker 5: Because I got to know like everybody's names because I
- 23:23Speaker 5: was always looking at their handles, and so younger girls
- 23:27Speaker 5: who were like two years younger would come up and
- 23:29Speaker 5: I'd be like hi, and then I would say their
- 23:31Speaker 5: name and they'd be like, hey, have we met? And
- 23:32Speaker 5: I'm like, oh no, I just like I've seen your
- 23:34Speaker 5: Instagram like every day, Like don't it's not weird.
- 23:37Speaker 4: But that definitely helped.
- 23:40Speaker 5: I was on it with two of our other roommates
- 23:42Speaker 5: that couldn't make it today, and so I feel like
- 23:45Speaker 5: getting into like the older years, you either like increase
- 23:49Speaker 5: your involvement or it becomes easier to drop out. And
- 23:53Speaker 5: so it was really cool to have three of the
- 23:55Speaker 5: people in our house like super involved because I think
- 23:58Speaker 5: it really will be Obviously wanted other people to come
- 24:01Speaker 5: to the events that like EXEC members were like required
- 24:04Speaker 5: to go to, and so then we would encourage like
- 24:07Speaker 5: all of our friends to come, and then that really
- 24:09Speaker 5: helped our retention rate. So like our PC is still
- 24:13Speaker 5: super big, but the one below us is really small
- 24:16Speaker 5: because a lot of them didn't want to get involved
- 24:19Speaker 5: like that. So I think that and like junior and
- 24:21Speaker 5: senior year, it really depends if you want to get
- 24:24Speaker 5: further involved or just drop out because you already met
- 24:26Speaker 5: all your friends.
- 24:27Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I liked I didn't do any exact positions,
- 24:31Speaker 3: but like I feel like that was kind of a regret,
- 24:34Speaker 3: like I wish I did, but them being orcing on
- 24:37Speaker 3: exec kind of like made me go to the events
- 24:40Speaker 3: and like stay in contact with all the people, which
- 24:42Speaker 3: is nice.
- 24:43Speaker 6: I made the recruitment video for last year, and so
- 24:47Speaker 6: the year prior to that, I went to a lot
- 24:50Speaker 6: of events and stuff just to record it. And I
- 24:52Speaker 6: think having a reason to be there and like being
- 24:55Speaker 6: involved like connects you so much more to your sourority
- 24:58Speaker 6: and helped help me meet people in the PC. I
- 25:00Speaker 6: guess above me but my year that I didn't know before,
- 25:03Speaker 6: and I'm actually really glad that I did it. Remember
- 25:05Speaker 6: in the moment, I was like this is awful, and
- 25:07Speaker 6: everybody was like I.
- 25:08Speaker 7: Was like super overwhelmed.
- 25:09Speaker 6: I'm like I'm never gonna finish this, but then it
- 25:11Speaker 6: ended up being totally worth it.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Well, what is something you guys will miss most about
- 25:16Speaker 1: sorority life and what is something you will not miss
- 25:19Speaker 1: miss most?
- 25:21Speaker 5: I think just ties hand in hand with college itself.
- 25:24Speaker 5: Like we don't live in our sorority house, but we
- 25:27Speaker 5: live in a house of twelve girls with mixed sororities,
- 25:30Speaker 5: and I think that have that huge just like girl
- 25:35Speaker 5: party house where we like it's every door you open
- 25:37Speaker 5: is just like your friend's house or your friend's room,
- 25:40Speaker 5: and you can at one point of the day like
- 25:43Speaker 5: someone's going to be home, so it's like you're always
- 25:45Speaker 5: surrounded by company and friendship. And so I think that
- 25:48Speaker 5: that's when I'm gonna miss most, even though it doesn't
- 25:51Speaker 5: directly tie into the sorority, but that's what I got
- 25:54Speaker 5: from it, And then I will not miss the fines
- 25:59Speaker 5: from not going to chapter.
- 26:02Speaker 3: Yeah, that one too, But I'm definitely just gonna miss
- 26:06Speaker 3: like all like the events and like everyone just like
- 26:09Speaker 3: coming together and like always having an excuse to just
- 26:12Speaker 3: like hang out with your friends. So that will be missed,
- 26:16Speaker 3: which is so sad.
- 26:18Speaker 6: I feel like sororities like there's never going to be
- 26:20Speaker 6: another point in our lives where we have this much
- 26:23Speaker 6: on like a calendar like of fun events to do
- 26:26Speaker 6: with like all of our favorite people, and so I
- 26:28Speaker 6: definitely think that's going to be like a huge thing
- 26:31Speaker 6: of just like, oh, we have an excuse like formal,
- 26:32Speaker 6: like let's all get dressed up and like hang out
- 26:35Speaker 6: and party with all of our best friends or like
- 26:37Speaker 6: exchanges or all the different things, even the stuff that
- 26:40Speaker 6: we aren't involved in. It's just like, I like, that's
- 26:42Speaker 6: you totally don't think about it until you're facing like
- 26:45Speaker 6: not ever doing it again, and it's like, wait, this
- 26:47Speaker 6: is so awesome and I've grown so accustomed to this,
- 26:49Speaker 6: so I.
- 26:49Speaker 7: Feel like that.
- 26:50Speaker 6: And then yeah, definitely, like the stupid stuff that we
- 26:53Speaker 6: everybody hates doing, like finds for chapter and all that,
- 26:56Speaker 6: it's like absolutely I don't want to do with Yeah.
- 27:01Speaker 1: All right, guys, Well, thank you so much for coming
