- 0:00Welcome back to Reformed Thinking.
- 0:01This is the deep dive where we take a single critical claim
- 0:05from Scripture and really try to unpack its historical setting,
- 0:09its logical framework, and what it means for how we understand
- 0:13salvation today. It's good to be here, and this
- 0:16is certainly some weighty source material we're looking at.
- 0:18It is our focus today is John chapter 14, verse 6.
- 0:22And this one sentence from Christ is well, it's one of the
- 0:26most confident and necessary decorations in all of the Bible.
- 0:29It really is. It speaks directly to this core
- 0:32pension that I think defines our whole culture right now.
- 0:36You mean this idea of spirituality as a kind of
- 0:38cafeteria? Exactly.
- 0:39You have countless choices, different moral programs, and
- 0:43this widespread assumption that you know, in the end, all paths
- 0:45lead to God. Right, but that assumption, it
- 0:48fundamentally gets the human condition wrong.
- 0:51The sources we looked at address this head on.
- 0:53They do, because if humanity's problem were just, say,
- 0:57spiritual confusion, if we just needed a better map, then maybe
- 1:00Christ could be one helpful guide among many.
- 1:03But John 14.6 asserts that the problem isn't confusion, it's
- 1:08it's a catastrophic alienation. That's it.
- 1:11The issue is theological. It's how can a guilty Sinner
- 1:15stand reconciled before a Holy Father?
- 1:17And that's the pivot, isn't it? We're not just a little bit
- 1:19lost. We're estranged, our consciences
- 1:22are burdened, we're always trying to justify ourselves, and
- 1:25we are completely incapable of approaching a holy God on our
- 1:28own terms. Which is why Jesus's statement
- 1:30can't be just a preference. It has to define reality itself.
- 1:34That's right. And when you really look at this
- 1:36text, it's not some advertisement for religious
- 1:38superiority. It's the necessary clarification
- 1:42of how access to God actually works.
- 1:44And it offers this amazing clarity because it's solving 2
- 1:46huge problems at the same time, right?
- 1:48In that very moment, it's addressing first, the intense
- 1:51fear of abandonment that His disciples are feeling in the
- 1:54upper room, and 2nd, it addresses the the abiding,
- 1:58crushing guilt of all sinners who know they can't stand before
- 2:02God's judgement. So access to the Father isn't
- 2:04something you achieve by climbing a mountain of good
- 2:06deeds or spiritual effort. No, it is granted solely through
- 2:10the work of a mediator. And our deep dive today is
- 2:12designed to pull out the surprising sufficiency that this
- 2:15one declaration offers when it comes to true access to God.
- 2:20OK, let's get into it. All right, let's start where the
- 2:23sources insist we have to In the atmosphere of the Upper Room,
- 2:27John 14.6 is quoted all the time as this sort of abstract slogan.
- 2:33Taken out of context. Completely.
- 2:34But it's authority and it's tenderness.
- 2:36Really. It only comes out when you place
- 2:38it back in that intense emotional and spiritual pressure
- 2:41cooker where Jesus spoke. It it's a rescue line spoken
- 2:44right before the storm hits. The setting is just critical.
- 2:48Well, the beginning of John 13 tells us Jesus knows exactly
- 2:51where the story is headed. It says his hour has come and
- 2:54that knowledge just frames every single word that follows.
- 2:56So everything he says is meant to anchor and stabilize his
- 2:59followers for the trauma that's about to happen.
- 3:02The arrest, The death. His temporary departure, yes.
- 3:06And the very first thing he does to start that stabilization is
- 3:11the foot washing. It's an act of humility, of
- 3:13course, but it means so much more than just that.
- 3:17It's a living parable, really. It's about cleansing and
- 3:20necessary fellowship. When Peter pulls back, you know,
- 3:24resists it. Jesus makes the condition
- 3:26explicit. He says unless I wash you, you
- 3:29have no share, no inheritance with me.
- 3:31So it's highlighting that even as disciples, they're in
- 3:34constant need of cleansing, not just for salvation, but just to
- 3:37maintain fellowship with the Holy Christ.
- 3:39Yes, it's a stark reminder. Spiritual access always depends
- 3:43on Christ's initiative and Christ's cleansing work.
- 3:47It can't be generated from within the disciples themselves.
- 3:50And then the atmosphere just gets even tighter.
- 3:52When Judas is exposed, the text notes that it was night when he
- 3:56left. That's more than a time stamp,
- 3:58isn't it? Oh.
- 3:59Absolutely. It's spiritual symbolism.
- 4:01Judas moving into the dark city mirrors the impending spiritual
- 4:04darkness and the trial the other disciples are about to go
- 4:06through. And they are completely
- 4:08destabilized because they don't see the cross as glorification.
- 4:11All they hear is abandonment, loss.
- 4:14Their whole human framework for what the Kingdom was supposed to
- 4:17be is about to collapse. They'd pin all their hopes on a
- 4:21physical, earthly reign. And now the king is talking
- 4:24about leaving. Exactly.
- 4:25So This is why the instruction that comes next, the new
- 4:28commandment to love one another, is so essential.
- 4:31It's not just sentimental advice, it's a covenantal
- 4:34structure for a community that's about to be shaken to its
- 4:37foundations. The Old Testament prophesied
- 4:39that when the shepherd is struck, the sheep will scatter.
- 4:42And the love they are commanded to to show each other is the
- 4:44divine glue meant to hold them together when their
- 4:47circumstances are screaming failure and their faith feels
- 4:50impossible. And we see immediately just how
- 4:53fragile that faith is. Peter the Rock, the most
- 4:56confident one. He proclaims he's ready to
- 4:58follow Jesus anywhere, to die for him.
- 5:01And yet Jesus predicts his total failure, his denial before the
- 5:05rooster crows. And that establishes the
- 5:07spiritual terrain. It confirms that the path to God
- 5:10cannot, will not, rest on their moral or moral emotional
- 5:14steadiness. Because even the strongest among
- 5:16them is about to fail under just a little bit of pressure.
- 5:19That's right. So when Jesus finally addresses
- 5:22their fear in John 14, when He says, let not your hearts be
- 5:25troubled, it's a command, but it's wrapped in comfort.
- 5:30He names their anxiety and their confusion, and he commands faith
- 5:35at the very moment when human feeling is dictating despair.
- 5:39He's grounding their entire future in his own on objective
- 5:42reliability. Yes, he talks about his
- 5:45departure, going away through death, resurrection and
- 5:47returning to the Father. But he promises a return, a
- 5:50homecoming in the Father's house.
- 5:52So it's a promise, not just a survival, but of acceptance of
- 5:56communion. And the comfort is rooted in his
- 5:58own identity. Believe in God, believe also in
- 6:01me. The whole structure of their
- 6:02salvation is Christ taking His people to Himself, securing
- 6:06them, not just giving them a how to manual on escaping trouble.
- 6:09But they're still stuck in their earthly, practical way of
- 6:12thinking. If he's leaving, how do they
- 6:14follow? And more to the point, if he's
- 6:17going to the Father's house, into the presence of ultimate
- 6:20holiness, how will these sinners, these men who are about
- 6:24to betray and deny Him, ever managed to cross that infinite
- 6:28holy divide? That's the unspoken question.
- 6:31And Thomas voices it perfectly. He lays bare that deeply human,
- 6:35striving instinct toward performance and method.
- 6:38Lord, we do not know where you are going.
- 6:40How can we know the way? He's essentially saying give us
- 6:43the map, give us the directions and we'll try to follow the
- 6:46steps. This is such a critical moment
- 6:48because Jesus doesn't just offer a small correction to Thomas's
- 6:52idea, he dismantles it. Completely.
- 6:54He refuses to give them a road map type of religious practices,
- 6:57or a ladder of mystical ascent, or a set of ethical rules to
- 7:00climb into God's favor. He doesn't give them it a system
- 7:04or a procedure. No, he gives them a person.
- 7:06He gives them himself. And the timing of this is
- 7:08everything. On the very eve of the cross,
- 7:11when their human performance is about to absolutely fail, Jesus
- 7:14grounds their access to the Father wholly and exclusively in
- 7:17his own identity and his own objective work.
- 7:20So their path to God will never be found in their own efforts or
- 7:24their sincerity. It's found in his decisive,
- 7:26sufficient saving mission. This is the ultimate clue to the
- 7:29meeting of the Cross. His death is the way opened by
- 7:32his blood. His teaching is the truth of the
- 7:35Father revealed, and his rising from the dead is the life that
- 7:39carries them and all of us home. OK, so let's turn now to the
- 7:42remarkable structure and logic of the verse itself.
- 7:46I am the Way and the truth and the life.
- 7:49No one comes to the Father except through me.
- 7:52The sources tell us to look first at the authority packed
- 7:55into those opening words. We really have to pause on that
- 7:58emphatic self identification. I am in Greek egoeme.
- 8:02Which has huge echoes in John's Gospel.
- 8:05Immense weight. It links Christ's identity
- 8:07directly to the divine identity revealed in the Old Testament,
- 8:10especially Yahweh's self designation in Exodus and
- 8:13Isaiah. When Jesus says egoeme, he's
- 8:16placing the source of salvation not in some abstract system, but
- 8:19entirely on the divine sovereign person of Christ himself.
- 8:23He's not just teaching about the path, he's claiming to be the
- 8:25living, absolute destination and the only means of getting there.
- 8:29It's a staggering claim. It forces us to deal with his
- 8:31deity right away. If he's just a good teacher,
- 8:34then this statement is blasphemous.
- 8:36But if he is who he claims to be, then it's the single most
- 8:40important sentence ever spoken about how to get to God.
- 8:43It forces that choice. And then right after the
- 8:46Yiguaimi, we get this comprehensive claim in the three
- 8:50predicates. Notice the repetition, the way,
- 8:54the truth, the life. And they're joined by that and
- 8:57and structure. It's piling up.
- 8:59Right. And that's not just for poetic
- 9:00effect. It's a declaration of
- 9:02singularity and sufficiency. Christ is the definitive way,
- 9:05the singular truth, the essential life.
- 9:08It just removes any room for ambiguity or for competing
- 9:11options. The sources suggest that this
- 9:13triad, way truth, life, is strategically chosen to deal
- 9:17with three different but essential problems that humanity
- 9:20faces in its alienation from God.
- 9:22What are these three beams, so to speak?
- 9:25This is where the theological genius of it really comes out.
- 9:28The triad make sure we understand that coming to the
- 9:30Father is a multi dimensional problem and Christ provides the
- 9:33solution to every dimension perfectly.
- 9:35OK, so let's break them down. 1st way.
- 9:38This answers the practical relational problem of access.
- 9:41How can separated, estranged, legally condemned people draw
- 9:45near to a holy God? Second truth.
- 9:49This addresses the intellectual and existential problem of
- 9:51knowledge. How can blind or self deceive
- 9:54people know the Father as he really is instead of just
- 9:57worshipping a projection of their own wants?
- 10:00And third life. This deals with the most severe
- 10:03problem of all, death. How can spiritually dead people,
- 10:07those with no native spiritual life in them, ever live before
- 10:10God and inherit eternal existence?
- 10:11He stacks the terms. Because we're so prone to try
- 10:14and reduce salvation, we try to make it just a mental thing or a
- 10:17moral program or a feeling. Exactly.
- 10:19But Christ insists we need all three and only he provides all
- 10:23three. If you only had truth without
- 10:24way, you'd know about God but still be condemned and far off.
- 10:28And if you had way without life, you might have legal acquittal,
- 10:30but you wouldn't have the spiritual ability to actually
- 10:33enjoy communion with. God.
- 10:34Precisely. And all of this leads to the
- 10:37second-half of the verse. No one comes to the Father
- 10:39except through me. This is where the controversy
- 10:41usually starts, right? But the sources frame this not
- 10:44as some extra line, but as the necessary logical conclusion of
- 10:48the claims he just made. It's the inevitable inference.
- 10:51If Christ is the way, then no other means of access is
- 10:55legitimate. If he is the truth, then every
- 10:58other idea of God built without him is a falsehood.
- 11:01And if. He is the life, then dead
- 11:04sinners can't generate the necessary spiritual vitality on
- 11:07their own. The logic.
- 11:08Is clean and it dictates that notorious phrase no one that.
- 11:13Universal negative. No one is so crucial, isn't it?
- 11:16It is. It levels the playing field
- 11:17completely. It applies to every single
- 11:19person. The atheist, the moralist
- 11:21relying on self effort, the person dedicated to some high
- 11:24religious achievement to spiritual seeker.
- 11:26It doesn't exclude anyone from its scope of human inability and
- 11:29the. Goal, as the verb comes,
- 11:31suggests, is relational, to come to the father.
- 11:34It's reconciliation, not just holding a theological position,
- 11:37it's. Peace instead of condemnation,
- 11:39acceptance instead of estrangement.
- 11:42It's communion with the Holy God.
- 11:45And that phrase, except through me, is classic mediator
- 11:48language. He's not a.
- 11:49Signpost pointing the way he is the.
- 11:51Passage itself. He's the necessary bridge that
- 11:53moves a person from being under God's righteous wrath to being
- 11:57in his favor. From distance to nearness.
- 11:59The exclusivity is rooted in theological necessity.
- 12:03The human problem is deep guilt, ignorance, death, and only
- 12:07Christ's identity and work are sufficient to meet all those
- 12:09requirements. All right, let's.
- 12:11Spend some real time on that first predicate the way when
- 12:14Christ declines Himself to be the way.
- 12:16How does this answer Thomas's practical question about
- 12:18directions while also addressing that deeper problem of sin and
- 12:21guilt? Well.
- 12:22The sources confirm that Christ answers the question of access
- 12:25by first redefining the obstacle.
- 12:27For us, a way is a route. We try to find a bath.
- 12:30Right. But for Jesus, the way is a
- 12:32barrier that has to be forcefully and substitutionally
- 12:36removed. The main thing separating
- 12:38humanity from God isn't a lack of directions, it's legal moral
- 12:40guilt and condemnation. So.
- 12:42Humanity isn't just a bewildered traveler, it's a criminal who
- 12:45has broken the law of the infinite judge.
- 12:48Exactly. Romans 3 makes that clear.
- 12:50So to come to the Father doesn't just mean knocking on the door,
- 12:54it means approaching the Judge of the universe as a welcome,
- 12:57fully reconciled child. And that.
- 12:59Welcome requires that divine justice be completely and
- 13:03satisfactorily met indeed. And this brings us right to the
- 13:06necessity of mediation. The gulf between a holy God and
- 13:10a guilty man is infinite. To breach that, a mediator has
- 13:14to be able to satisfy the requirements of both sides.
- 13:17He has to. Be God to represent God's
- 13:19holiness and man to represent humanity under the curse.
- 13:22That's it. The Son of God, having taken on
- 13:24a true human nature, is uniquely qualified as the one true
- 13:28Mediator. First Timothy 2.5 No mere
- 13:31creature, no St., no ritual can stand in that gap and the
- 13:34sources. Are clear, Christ doesn't
- 13:35mediate by convincing the Father to lower the standard.
- 13:38No, He. Mediates by fulfilling it.
- 13:40The way he opens is inherently cross shaped, secured entirely
- 13:43by substitution he provides. Perfect obedience where we
- 13:46failed and bears the full penalty for our disobedience,
- 13:49Yes. When Jesus spoke these words, he
- 13:53was hours away from shedding his blood.
- 13:55As the spotless Lamb of God. He's as establishing a way, not
- 13:59by offering spiritual advice, but by offering himself as the
- 14:02once for all sacrifice, enduring the Father's righteous wrath,
- 14:06satisfying justice, and cleansing the conscience for
- 14:09good. And this.
- 14:10Objective work is what makes the believers access so certain.
- 14:13As Hebrew says, we have confidence to enter the holy
- 14:16places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way.
- 14:20Access isn't granted based on the strength of our spiritual
- 14:22feelings. It's secured entirely by the
- 14:25objective fact of his blood, the law demands.
- 14:27Perfect sustained righteousness and our moral bank account shows
- 14:31only debt. So Christ.
- 14:32Becomes the way by providing the necessary credit and removing
- 14:36the debt. This is the double work of
- 14:38justification. The Father declares the ungodly
- 14:41righteous not by pretending they're innocent, but on the
- 14:43basis of the sons obedience and atoning death our guilt.
- 14:46Is removed, and His righteousness is put on our
- 14:49account, that mechanism. Imputation is the heart of how
- 14:52Christ is the Way. The sources also spend time
- 14:55looking back through the Bible story to show that this
- 14:58exclusive, sacrificial way has always been the message.
- 15:02Can you walk us through that contrast between the Old
- 15:04Testament barrier and how Christ fulfills it?
- 15:08Certainly. I mean, look at what happens
- 15:09right after Eden, the way back to the Tree of Life and God's
- 15:13presence is barred by cherubim with a flaming sword, right?
- 15:17That sword symbolizes God's justice guarding his presence
- 15:20from sinful humanity. The barrier was both physical
- 15:23and moral. Later, the entire Tabernacle and
- 15:26temple system was a constant visual lesson on restricted
- 15:29access. God lived among them, but
- 15:31sinners couldn't just stroll into the most Holy place.
- 15:34The. Veil, the constant need for
- 15:36sacrifice, the specific priesthood, all of it screamed.
- 15:39You cannot come on your own terms, it said.
- 15:41Exactly. That access required an animal
- 15:43sacrifice, a priest, and blood placed on the mercy seat.
- 15:46All of them were shadows. Christ fulfills the whole
- 15:48system. He is the ultimate priest who
- 15:50offered the ultimate sacrifice himself, and in doing so he
- 15:53removed the barrier. That's why.
- 15:55The temple veil ripped from top to bottom at his death,
- 15:58signifying. That the way into the Holy of
- 16:00Holies, into the very presence of God, was now open permanently
- 16:03and freely. He doesn't just point to the
- 16:06altar, He is the altar's sufficient offering.
- 16:08OK, so if. Christ is the one and only way.
- 16:10This naturally exposes the the inadequacy of all the
- 16:14substitutes the world proposes. Let's look at some of those
- 16:17substitutes popular today. First.
- 16:19Self improvement or moralism? Moralism.
- 16:22Says try harder, do better, and God will accept you.
- 16:26But Galatians 3 says the law curses anyone who doesn't abide
- 16:30by all of its commands perfectly and consistently.
- 16:33Our best? Actions are stained with sin and
- 16:35Christ. Redeems us from that curse.
- 16:37Self improvement fails because the problem isn't a lack of
- 16:40effort, it's a past debt we can't pay in a present nature.
- 16:43We can't change. A good moral effort today can't
- 16:46undo yesterday's rebellion. Then there's.
- 16:48The persistent urge to add mediators, introducing Saints,
- 16:51rituals or personal merits alongside Christ.
- 16:54This impulse. Often pretends to be pious or
- 16:56humble. You hear people say I'm too
- 16:57insignificant to approach God directly, so I have to go
- 17:00through Mary or a St. or special ritual.
- 17:03But the sources we looked at categorize this as unbelief
- 17:06dressed up as reverence. If Christ declared no one comes
- 17:10to the Father except through me, than adding anything to his
- 17:13finished work implies his work was somehow incomplete, The one
- 17:17Mediator is sufficient precisely because He is both God and man.
- 17:22And finally, the appeal of inner experience or mysticism, using
- 17:26private feelings to try and connect with God.
- 17:29Right. And while the Holy Spirit
- 17:30certainly works in our hearts, inner experience cannot solve
- 17:33the legal problem of guilt. Guilt isn't a bad feeling, it's
- 17:37a righteous verdict. Feelings can be soothed by
- 17:40meditation or heightened states, but only illegal acquittal
- 17:43atonement can satisfy external justice.
- 17:45So the way. Of feelings leaves the essential
- 17:47problem of condemnation untouched.
- 17:49That's. Right.
- 17:50The pastoral reality here is so sweet because Christ is the way
- 17:54the weary center doesn't need to invent one or climb one or feel
- 17:57one. The way He's already established
- 17:59by His objective finished work having.
- 18:01Settled the problem of access. We move to that second
- 18:04predicate, Christ as the truth. This claim isn't secondary, it's
- 18:08existential. When Jesus?
- 18:09Says I am the truth. He's claiming to be so much more
- 18:13than a reliable teacher or someone who speaks verified
- 18:16facts. It's.
- 18:17Just He's the climactic, personal and necessary
- 18:20revelation of the Father, and that he inherently judges all of
- 18:23their claims about God, that is. The meaning of the claim truth
- 18:27here means saving reality, the unveiled disclosure of who God
- 18:31truly is, what He demands, and what He has done to rescue
- 18:34sinners and John. 'S Gospel begins by anchoring
- 18:37this The eternal Word became flesh, lived among us, full of
- 18:41grace and truth, right? God's ultimate self
- 18:44communication culminates in the Incarnate Sun so.
- 18:47Humanity moves from this idea of an unknown God, the God who is
- 18:50invisible, to the sun who makes him known.
- 18:53No one has ever seen God. The only sun has made him known,
- 18:56which means. If you claim to know the true
- 18:58God while bypassing the sun, you are by definition operating with
- 19:02an imaginative deity. That's the.
- 19:04Necessary force of the argument and look at the immediate.
- 19:06Context. Jesus says if you would have
- 19:08known me, you would have known my father also and whoever has
- 19:11seen me has seen the Father. Christ is the absolute
- 19:14interpretive key, so the. Father isn't known through human
- 19:17speculation or philosophy or comparing religions, no.
- 19:21He is known solely by receiving the Son.
- 19:24The truth we need isn't just information about God, it's
- 19:27God's living self disclosure embodied in Jesus Christ.
- 19:30OK, if that premise. Holds that Christ is the
- 19:33singular truth. It requires several necessary
- 19:36exclusions. How does this doctrine exclude
- 19:39the popular notion of siritual relativism?
- 19:41Well, relativism. Is the cultural idea that truth
- 19:44is always subjective? That may be true for you, but I
- 19:47have my own truth. Jesus rejects that framework
- 19:50entirely. He doesn't offer a truth or one
- 19:53path to truth. He claims to be the truth.
- 19:55He is the. Standard.
- 19:56He's the standard. The definition of reality is God
- 19:59establishes it regardless of human desire or negotiation.
- 20:02If truth is a person, it can't be individualized this also.
- 20:05Excludes the appeal of what you might call generic theism, where
- 20:08people talk warmly about a benevolent, abstract higher
- 20:11power but refuse the specifics of the father revealed in the
- 20:14son his. Holiness, his judgement, the
- 20:17need for substitutionary atonement.
- 20:19Merrick theism is comfortable because it describes a God who
- 20:22validates our preferences and never confronts sin.
- 20:26But the true God is known only in the face of Jesus Christ.
- 20:29If we get rid of the Christological specifics, the
- 20:32virgin birth, the sinless life, the cross, the literal
- 20:34resurrection, we lose the truth. Those specifics are the non
- 20:39negotiable elements of God saving reality.
- 20:41Then there's. The exclusion of seeking
- 20:43certainty through mysticism or new revelations.
- 20:46This modern desire for private experiences or new words from
- 20:50God, this. Is a critical point for Reformed
- 20:53thought. Jesus as the truth anchors us to
- 20:56objective revelation that is finished in public.
- 20:58He sends the Spirit not to create a competing pipeline of
- 21:01new truth, but specifically to glorify Christ by taking what is
- 21:05Christ and declaring it to the church.
- 21:07So the Spirit. Illuminates the truth contained
- 21:09in the Apostolic witness, the Scriptures.
- 21:11He doesn't add to it exactly. Seeking spiritual certainty and
- 21:14untestable inner impressions rather than the objective of
- 21:17Christ is a rejection of Christ as the final truth and.
- 21:20If Christ is the ultimate truth, that also unmasks liberal
- 21:24reductionism, which tries to reduce Jesus to just a moral
- 21:27teacher or an ethical guide, a moral.
- 21:30Teacher can offer good advice, but only the Incarnate Son can
- 21:34be the truth of God made manifest.
- 21:36The truth we desperately need is redemption from sin and
- 21:39reconciliation with God, not just better guidance on ethical
- 21:42living. So this.
- 21:43Claim works as both a sharp critique and a comforting
- 21:46declaration it. Critiques every attempt we make
- 21:48to build a God in our own image, cutting down our self-made gods
- 21:52and comfortable half truths and the.
- 21:54Comfort is immense, it assures. The Sinner that God is not
- 21:57hidden. He has spoken clearly, finally
- 22:00and savingly in His Son. And Jesus ties the truth
- 22:03directly to freedom. If you abide in my Word, you
- 22:06will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
- 22:09To reject Christ isn't just choosing an alternate worldview.
- 22:12It's remaining willingly captive to the lie, separated from the
- 22:15only God who has chosen to reveal himself fully.
- 22:17We move. Now to the third and really the
- 22:20most desperate problem addressed by this verse, spiritual death.
- 22:23Christ declares I am the life. This immediately moves the
- 22:27conversation beyond morality and into the realm of what's
- 22:30spiritually impossible for us. This.
- 22:32Addresses the ultimate human inability.
- 22:35The biblical diagnosis is not weakness, it's death.
- 22:38We are dead in trespasses and sins, as Ephesians 2 says, so
- 22:42we. Lack any spiritual vitality
- 22:43toward God now and we lack the promised resurrection life
- 22:46beyond the grave a spiritually. Dead person cannot start a
- 22:50search for God, nor can they respond appropriately to His
- 22:53Holiness. We can do outward religious
- 22:56things, be moral, but we can't by our own will, generate the
- 23:00inward desire that delights in God and loves His Holiness, The
- 23:03Engine. Just isn't running right.
- 23:05So if anyone is to come to the Father, they must be made
- 23:07spiritually alive. This miracle of regeneration has
- 23:10to be given. It can't be achieved.
- 23:12This is what? Jesus told Nicodemus unless
- 23:14you're born again, born from above, you can't even see or
- 23:17enter the Kingdom of God. New birth.
- 23:19Is resurrection on a spiritual scale the sovereign work of the
- 23:23Holy Spirit raising a heart from spiritual death to living faith,
- 23:27the. Sources make it clear that
- 23:28Christ isn't just a distributor of life.
- 23:30He possesses life. In his very essence.
- 23:32He's life. Source.
- 23:34Yes. John 5 confirms this.
- 23:36As the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the
- 23:39Son also to have life in himself.
- 23:41He has life eternally as the second person of the Trinity,
- 23:44and He gives life redemptively as the Incarnate Mediator.
- 23:47He is the. Life because he purchased it
- 23:49through his death and secured it by his resurrection which
- 23:52brings. Us back to the upper room and
- 23:53the disciples fear of being abandoned.
- 23:56Jesus assures them that his departure is the foundation of
- 23:59their future life. Because I live, you also will
- 24:01live. Their security rests entirely on
- 24:04his victorious living reality on the other side of the Cross.
- 24:08The gospel logic is central here.
- 24:10Life comes to the dead because Christ entered death for the
- 24:12guilty. He became obedient to death,
- 24:15bore the curse, satisfied justice, and rose as the new
- 24:19head of humanity, the last Adam and the.
- 24:21Life that Christ grants isn't some detached spiritual boost.
- 24:25It's communion. It's organic union with Him.
- 24:28It's the. Deepest reality of salvation.
- 24:30We are spiritually made alive together with Christ, raised
- 24:33with him, and our life is hidden with Christ and God.
- 24:37So this. Union has immediate implications
- 24:39for now, and it guarantees the future, yes.
- 24:42This life is both already in our regeneration and new desires,
- 24:46and not yet in the future resurrection.
- 24:49But because Christ is the life, the ultimate outcome is secure.
- 24:53He will raise His people bodily at the last day.
- 24:56Redemption is total, securing victory even over the physical
- 24:59grave. This.
- 25:00Definition of life really stands in sharp contrast to the rival
- 25:04gospels we see today. How does Christ as the life
- 25:06expose the emptiness of those substitutes?
- 25:09Well, we see the. Failure in several popular ones.
- 25:11Moralism, as we said, can Polish our outward behavior, but it
- 25:15can't give spiritual life to a dead heart.
- 25:16Therapeutic. Religion promises.
- 25:18To soothe anxiety and boost self esteem.
- 25:21But it cannot cancel the legal verdict of guilt, nor can it
- 25:24conquer the reality of the grave.
- 25:25And what about? Mystical pursuits, those that.
- 25:28Chase Altered states or heightened experiences often
- 25:31bypass the objective foundation of life, which is Christ's
- 25:35historical finished work, and they leave the soul looking for
- 25:39life in its own subjective feelings.
- 25:41So against. All of these Christ's claim is
- 25:43absolute. Life is not found within you,
- 25:46nor is it manufactured by you. Life is.
- 25:48Found exclusively in Christ and received from Christ through the
- 25:51Spirit's work of regeneration. And this has.
- 25:54A very practical pastoral application for the believer.
- 25:56It does. When a believer feels
- 25:58spiritually weak, they don't need to be told to just muster
- 26:01up strengths or dig deeper into their inner resources.
- 26:04They need to cling to the life who is Christ.
- 26:07Sanctification. Spiritual growth is the
- 26:09outworking of Christ's life within us, applied by the
- 26:12Spirit. It is not self powered heroism,
- 26:14it's relying on the risen person who holds the keys of death.
- 26:17In Hades, coming to the Father requires resurrection power, and
- 26:20that power is located only in Him.
- 26:22We turn. Now to the clause that demands
- 26:24the most careful attention and often sparks the most
- 26:27controversy. No one comes to the Father
- 26:30except through me. The sources are adamant that we
- 26:33have to understand this as a moral and theological necessity,
- 26:37not as some kind of arbitrary tribal arrogance.
- 26:41So I think we need to face that common objection head on.
- 26:44In a pluralistic, tolerant society, Why isn't the statement
- 26:47just profoundly arrogant? How do the sources justify this
- 26:50claim as mercy when it sounds so exclusionary to someone outside
- 26:54the tradition? That's the.
- 26:55Essential question, isn't it? The world often hears this as
- 26:58Christ protecting his brand or asserting religious superiority.
- 27:02But in context, the exclusivity isn't arbitrary, it's the honest
- 27:06assessment of reality. So Jesus.
- 27:08Is saying the human problem, guilt, ignorance, death is far
- 27:10deeper than you admit, and therefore only my unique divine
- 27:14qualifications are sufficient to solve it.
- 27:16That's. It the exclusivity rests
- 27:18entirely on the holiness of the Father.
- 27:20If God is holy, righteous, and just, then His law must be
- 27:23honored, and a broken debt must be paid.
- 27:25Sincerity. Can erase guilt, can't repay a
- 27:28past debt any. Form of religion without a
- 27:31complete substitutionary atonement simply fails to meet
- 27:34the standard. If God accepted sinners based on
- 27:37partial goodness or good intentions, He would cease to be
- 27:41holy. And just so the.
- 27:42Exclusivity clause is the necessary verdict that only one
- 27:46mediator, who is both God and man, can bring the guilty near
- 27:50without compromising God's own righteous character, the
- 27:53preceding. Claims logically demand this
- 27:55conclusion. If Christ is the way, atonement
- 27:58is required. If he's the truth, God's self
- 28:01revelation must be received. If He's the life, resurrection
- 28:05power must be given. Remove the.
- 28:06Exclusivity and you just empty the gospel of its necessary
- 28:09power. You do.
- 28:11You're left with a way that doesn't require substitution, a
- 28:13truth that doesn't require objective revelation, and a life
- 28:16that can be self generated. That's not Christianity, it's
- 28:18just self help religion with biblical language and the
- 28:21sources. Also emphasize that this
- 28:23statement actually levels human pride rather than feeding it the
- 28:27phrase. No one is the mechanism that
- 28:29levels all human effort. It means no one, no matter how
- 28:32moral, how intellectual, how zealous, has native access to
- 28:35God. No one can boast so if.
- 28:37Anyone comes to the Father, they come as a receiver, a beggar, A
- 28:40Sinner. Wash in Christo's righteousness,
- 28:43not as an achiever with a spiritual resume, which is the.
- 28:46Opposite of religious arrogance, it's the declaration of total
- 28:49dependency upon God's external grace.
- 28:52So the very. Exclusivity that offends the
- 28:54self confident person is the same exclusivity that saves the
- 28:57humble despairing center because it.
- 28:59Shuts the door to every form of self salvation and opens the one
- 29:04door to Christ's salvation. And we should see this statement
- 29:07in its pastoral shape. It's not just a wall, it's a
- 29:10doorway with a clear sign. No one.
- 29:12Comes except through me. It's a.
- 29:15Severe warning that all substitutes will fail.
- 29:17But at the same time, it's a stunning invitation.
- 29:20It says the true, necessary way is open and accessible because
- 29:24it's Christ himself. This clarifies.
- 29:26Why Accusations of intolerance really miss the moral center of
- 29:29the claim. True compassion isn't telling
- 29:31people comforting lies about their soul or how easy it is to
- 29:34approach a holy God. True.
- 29:36Love directs them to the only remedy that actually reconciles
- 29:39and saves and when. People raise that objection.
- 29:42What about the sincere your person who hasn't heard
- 29:45scripture? 'S answer isn't to invent
- 29:47parallel escape routes for them. It's to maintain God's justice
- 29:51and at the same time press the church's urgency and evangelism.
- 29:55The command is to preach the way because there is no other path
- 29:58and. Regarding the narrowness the
- 30:00way. Is narrow because God's holiness
- 30:02is not negotiable and spiritual death is not curable by human
- 30:06optimism. But that theological narrowness
- 30:08is joined to an astonishing wideness.
- 30:11Any Sinner from any nation, from any background may come the.
- 30:15Qualification for entry isn't lineage or performance.
- 30:18It is. Simply reliance upon Christ.
- 30:20The world urges us to broaden the gate by lowering the
- 30:23standard. But Christ says, come through me
- 30:25because He alone met the standard and bore the penalty.
- 30:28The exclusivity of John 14.6 is secured by the authority of
- 30:31Christ, the holiness of the Father, and the infinite mercy
- 30:34of God in providing a single sufficient Savior.
- 30:37John. 14.6 really functions as a doctrinal keystone, doesn't it?
- 30:41If this one verse is compromised, the whole structure
- 30:44of Christian theology starts to shift and collapse.
- 30:46But when? It's affirmed.
- 30:47It stabilizes and connects several core doctrines.
- 30:50OK, let's. Analyze how it secures our
- 30:51Christology. What must Christ be in order to
- 30:55sustain this claim? Well, the claim demands that
- 30:58Christ be more than just a model or a wise man or a gifted
- 31:02prophet. He has to be the Incarnate Son
- 31:04of God, fully God and fully man. If he's away truth and life,
- 31:09He's a personal center of access to God, a created.
- 31:12Being couldn't make that claim without committing idolatry.
- 31:14Exactly. And it's linked to the doctrine
- 31:16of the Trinity, is apparent in its structure.
- 31:18How so? Salvation is inherently
- 31:19Trinitarian. The goal is fellowship with the
- 31:22Father. The means is through me, the
- 31:24Son, and the immediate context in John 14 to 16 shows that this
- 31:28access is applied, revealed and made real by the Holy Spirit.
- 31:32So salvation. Is communion with the Triune God
- 31:34in the order God is appointed moving on to revelation in
- 31:37Scripture, If Christ is the truth, how does this protect the
- 31:40sufficiency of God's written word it?
- 31:42Locates truth finally and objectively in Christ, and
- 31:46therefore in Christ's authorized, completed witness
- 31:49which we have in Scripture. The Christian doesn't need to
- 31:52resort to human speculation or chase after spiritual fads it
- 31:55guards. US against this constant craving
- 31:58for fresh revelations that conflict with the already
- 32:02established word, right. The Spears ministry is defined.
- 32:05He applies the truth of Christ. He does not invent new saving
- 32:09truth, and the church's authority therefore rests on the
- 32:12sufficiency of God's Word concerning the sun.
- 32:14The verse. Is also a crucial anchor for our
- 32:17anthropology, our view of humanity and sin it
- 32:20fundamentally. Rejects the modern flattering
- 32:22diagnosis that humanity is basically good and just needs
- 32:25some coaching if coming to the Father requires a way, a truth
- 32:29and a life which means. Atonement, revelation and
- 32:32regeneration that requires. The diagnosis that humanity
- 32:35suffers from real distance, real guilt, and true spiritual death.
- 32:39That requires divine intervention, finally.
- 32:41Let's synthesize its stabilizing effect on soteriology, the
- 32:44doctrine of salvation, and our personal assurance.
- 32:47Soteriology. Is clarified in its dependency.
- 32:50Salvation is defined by Christ as the exclusive, sufficient
- 32:54mediator. The way secures the need for
- 32:57substitution and legal reconciliation, the truth
- 33:00secures the need for revelation and faith, and the life secures
- 33:04the need for regeneration and union with Christ.
- 33:07And this. Framework stabilizes our
- 33:08assurance because it places confidence outside of ourselves.
- 33:12Absolutely. The believers confidence is not
- 33:14based on how strong they feel today or how well they resisted
- 33:17temptation yesterday. Assurance rest on the objective,
- 33:20complete insufficiency of Christ as the way, the truth and the
- 33:23life. He finished the work our.
- 33:26Standing is not as fragile as our feelings because it rests on
- 33:29the mediators. Finished eternal work that's.
- 33:32It and for the church's mission. If no one comes to the Father
- 33:35except through Christ, then the church can't accept a mission
- 33:38statement that reduces its calling to generic community
- 33:40service or political action alone.
- 33:42Those things are. Important.
- 33:44But they aren't the central pillar.
- 33:45The Central. Pillar must be the proclamation
- 33:47of Christ's person and his atoning work.
- 33:50Because the world's deepest, most critical need is
- 33:53reconciliation to God, we plead with sinners to be reconciled
- 33:57through the only Savior. This.
- 33:59Ancient claim from the Upper Room really strikes our modern
- 34:02world with a unique urgency, especially because our culture
- 34:06aggressively multiply spiritual options while fiercely resisting
- 34:10any judgement between them. John. 14.6 cuts right through
- 34:13the most common evasions we see every day.
- 34:16It challenges. Three major cultural
- 34:17assumptions. First, pluralism.
- 34:19The age. Assumes all paths lead to God,
- 34:23Jesus answers. No one comes to the Father other
- 34:25except through me. The church is tasked with
- 34:28stating this reality with humility about ourselves, but
- 34:31without apology about the truth of Christ to soften this.
- 34:34Message isn't kindness, it's offering a dying man a placebo
- 34:37instead of the cure. Exactly.
- 34:39Second, it challenges moralism, which is often hidden unto the
- 34:42guise of just being a good, decent person.
- 34:45Many of our. Neighbors are sincere,
- 34:47charitable, trying to be good, but sincerity.
- 34:49Doesn't atone for sin and decency.
- 34:52Doesn't cleanse the conscience before a holy God.
- 34:55The sources maintain that the gospel is not about God grading
- 34:57on a curve. It's about God justly justifying
- 35:00the ungodly through the imputation of Christ's perfect
- 35:04righteousness. Third.
- 35:05It confronts the constant pursuit of mysticism and new
- 35:08spirituality, this cultural hunger for personalized private
- 35:12experiences over objective external authority and John. 14
- 35:16corrects that impulse by anchoring truth in the sons
- 35:20final objective revelation recorded in Scripture.
- 35:22If the Holy Spirit's ministry is specifically to glorify Christ
- 35:25and apply His finished word, then chasing spiritual certainty
- 35:29through private impressions that deviate from the text is a
- 35:32rejection of the truth it. Replaces a relationship with the
- 35:34revealed God with a search for self validating feelings.
- 35:38That's right. So let's apply this directly to
- 35:40you, the listener. What does this singular total
- 35:42claim demand of the unbeliever it.
- 35:45Demands something countercultural, Repentance.
- 35:49The call is never to add Jesus as a helpful accessory to your
- 35:53spiritual system. It's to turn away from self
- 35:56rule, self righteousness and all false gods and come to the
- 36:00Father through Christ alone. The invitation.
- 36:02Is always come to Christ, not climb up to God always And for
- 36:06the believer, how does this stabilize assurance in a
- 36:09spiritual landscape that constantly breeds comparison and
- 36:13and inward instability when a. Believer's heart condemns them
- 36:17when their obedience feels thin or their prayer life week.
- 36:20This doctrine is their ultimate security.
- 36:23They have to return to the objective ground.
- 36:25Christ is the way your. Relationship with the father is
- 36:27not as fragile as your feelings because it.
- 36:29Rests on the mediator's finished work.
- 36:32Your prayer is heard not because of your eloquence, but because
- 36:35you pray through Christ, confessing that every approach
- 36:37to God depends entirely on His righteousness and His
- 36:40intercession for the Church. 'S public witness.
- 36:42This verse is a necessary rebuke to any pragmatism that
- 36:46encourages vague, non offensive messaging.
- 36:49Jesus. Himself defined the path by
- 36:51excluding all alternatives, and he did it as an act of saving
- 36:55mercy. Therefore, preaching cannot
- 36:57drift into inspirational talks or pep rallies focused on human
- 37:01potential. It has.
- 37:02To clearly present Christ, His cross, His resurrection, and His
- 37:06exclusive person as the only hope for guilty and dying
- 37:10people. We're not calling.
- 37:11People to try church, We're calling them to be reconciled to
- 37:14God through the only available Savior.
- 37:16The contrast. Is comprehensive.
- 37:18The world offers a labyrinth and says find your own path, but
- 37:21Christ. Says Come through me, the world
- 37:23says. Your subjective truth is enough,
- 37:26Christ. Answers I am the truth.
- 37:28This verse acts as a loving constraint.
- 37:31It mercifully shuts every door that cannot save and opens the
- 37:34single door that does the. Application is absolute.
- 37:37Cease bargaining with God through substitutes, stop
- 37:40treating Christ as a helper rather than the only Savior, and
- 37:43come daily repentantly, believingly through Jesus Christ
- 37:46to the Father, because outside of Him there is no legitimate
- 37:49access, no true knowledge of God, and no eternal life.
- 37:52John. 14.6 stands as an essential declaration in the
- 37:56shifting sand of human religion. Jesus offers himself as the one
- 38:00necessary mediator who alone can bring guilty sinners home to
- 38:04God, if he is. The way our barrier is guilt and
- 38:08only his atonement solves it if he is the.
- 38:10Truth, God is revealed only through him and if He.
- 38:13Is the life our condition is death and only his resurrection
- 38:17power can revive us the. Total weight of this verse is
- 38:20that neutrality concerning Christ just collapses.
- 38:23You're either coming to the Father through the Son, resting
- 38:26on his completed righteousness and receiving his life, or you
- 38:29are outside striving to approach God by shadows that have no
- 38:32saving ability. So a final.
- 38:34Thought for you to consider, Since Christ's claim is personal
- 38:37and demands exclusive reliance, what does it mean to rest daily
- 38:40on Christ as the Way, the Truth, and the life, rather than
- 38:44subconsciously returning to self effort?
- 38:46If the Way is already opened by blood and secured by
- 38:48resurrection, how does that complete unearned freedom change
- 38:52the way you face your next challenge or even just your next
- 38:54hour? A.
- 38:55Vital question. Thank you for joining us for
- 38:57this deep dive into the sufficiency of the single
- 39:00savior. We look forward to seeing you
- 39:02next time on Reformed Thinking.
