- 0:15Speaker 2: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota.com.
- 0:21Speaker 3: I think things will get better. I think Drake May
- 0:23Speaker 3: will be better. I have confidence in that. One guy
- 0:25Speaker 3: said that they should sit him. I didn't hear that, like,
- 0:28Speaker 3: in the post-game show by anybody else.
- 0:29Speaker 4: Well, listen, if you want to jump ship, jump ship.
- 0:32Speaker 4: See you later.
- 0:32Speaker 5: Bye-bye.
- 0:33Speaker 6: I see what you're saying. I mean, it just seems
- 0:34Speaker 6: like there's a lot on him right now, and good. Like,
- 0:37Speaker 6: this is an NFL quarterback. Like, this is what happens,
- 0:39Speaker 6: you know? There's supposed to be a lot on a quarterback. Right,
- 0:42Speaker 6: so either sink or swim. I think he has all
- 0:44Speaker 6: the physical tools and the off-the-field tools.
- 0:46Speaker 5: Do you think it would help for coaches to go
- 0:49Speaker 5: up to him and say, hey.
- 0:50Speaker 3: You're going to get benched. One more bad throw and
- 0:52Speaker 3: you're on the bench, buster.
- 0:53Speaker 7: Right.
- 0:54Speaker 8: And they just got a favorable box. They got six
- 0:57Speaker 8: guys in the box. Too high safety.
- 0:59Speaker 4: Everybody likes a favorable box.
- 1:00Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:01Speaker 8: Ways to either motion guys to spread a box. How
- 1:03Speaker 8: many guys in the box?
- 1:04Speaker 5: And I did think.
- 1:05Speaker 4: And when you have a favorable box, you want to
- 1:07Speaker 4: stay in there for a while.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:08Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:09Speaker 2: You think he's got a lot of, like, insecurities.
- 1:12Speaker 5: That he's going to force things against Jacksonville?
- 1:14Speaker 6: Yeah, we're thinking about benching him, actually.
- 1:16Speaker 7: This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:19Speaker 6: Presented by Toyota.com.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:23Speaker 5: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Wednesday here
- 1:28Speaker 5: at Gillette Stadium, and it is turn the page day.
- 1:32Speaker 5: The page is being turned to Jacksonville, the Jaguars. At
- 1:37Speaker 5: one time, one of my favorite quarterbacks in the NFL,
- 1:39Speaker 5: Trevor Lawrence. I was very high on Trevor Lawrence. I
- 1:45Speaker 5: don't think he's lived up to my aspirations for him.
- 1:49Speaker 5: But I still think he's a really good quarterback in
- 1:51Speaker 5: this league.
- 1:52Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:52Speaker 6: Would you tie that a little bit into the Drake
- 1:55Speaker 6: conversation we're having where Trevor Lawrence came out so prolific
- 1:58Speaker 6: in college, whether you lose one game, I think, something
- 2:00Speaker 6: like that. But he's had some ups and downs. He's
- 2:03Speaker 6: shown good glimpses, but I don't think Jacksonville's ready. They
- 2:06Speaker 6: stuck with him, and now I think they're starting to
- 2:08Speaker 6: put something together around him finally.
- 2:09Speaker 5: And it's Evan, it's Paul, it's me, it's Deuce, it's
- 2:12Speaker 5: Matt in the booth. but I think that if he
- 2:15Speaker 5: had Liam Cohen from day one, I think he'd be
- 2:19Speaker 5: better off now than he is.
- 2:21Speaker 6: Yeah, a little surprising. I mean, Paul talked about it
- 2:24Speaker 6: when we shot our show yesterday. The Duvall thing was
- 2:27Speaker 6: kind of silly, and I think that colored how people's
- 2:30Speaker 6: impression of him, but I think he's shown over the
- 2:32Speaker 6: last two years that he can coach.
- 2:34Speaker 5: Well, I think these new young coaches are a different breed.
- 2:37Speaker 5: Look no further than Mike McDonald in that interview that
- 2:40Speaker 5: just came out.
- 2:41Speaker 9: I don't think that was supposed to come out. No,
- 2:43Speaker 9: I don't think he knew he was being recorded.
- 2:45Speaker 5: He obviously doesn't know this guy that well. Because the
- 2:52Speaker 5: guy starts off by saying, I really like John Payton.
- 2:55Speaker 5: He's like, he's not the favorite of mine. And he
- 2:57Speaker 5: gets into the story. He's willing to talk about it
- 3:00Speaker 5: with someone he doesn't really know that much about.
- 3:04Speaker 9: I think he thought he was off the rack.
- 3:07Speaker 3: But my point is, He was okay sharing it with
- 3:10Speaker 3: that guy.
- 3:11Speaker 5: Right, with that guy who wasn't like a close friend
- 3:13Speaker 5: or anything.
- 3:14Speaker 9: Yeah, I feel like with Liam Cohn. another friend of McVay.
- 3:19Speaker 8: And it just seems like anybody that touches Sean McVay
- 3:22Speaker 8: or Kyle Shanahan is going to get a job in
- 3:25Speaker 8: the NFL. And some of those guys have worked out
- 3:27Speaker 8: and some of them haven't. And he's definitely in the
- 3:29Speaker 8: category so far, at least of working out and you know,
- 3:33Speaker 8: their defensive coordinator, Anthony Campanella, I think I'm saying that
- 3:36Speaker 8: correctly is also a rising star in the coaching industry
- 3:41Speaker 8: and somebody that has a head coach aspirations as well.
- 3:45Speaker 5: My point of about, these young guys being a different breed,
- 3:48Speaker 5: they're all a little quirky. I mean, you know, Ben
- 3:51Speaker 5: Johnson is a little quirky, too.
- 3:53Speaker 4: He is quirky.
- 3:54Speaker 5: You know, but look at the results. You can't... So
- 3:57Speaker 5: maybe that's okay to have those little quirks.
- 4:00Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 2: You know?
- 4:01Speaker 6: They're all just.
- 4:03Speaker 8: they're junkies, you know, they, you know, Liam Cohn, obviously
- 4:05Speaker 8: on the offensive side of the ball, but Mike McDonald
- 4:09Speaker 8: is that for defense and they, they're in the lab,
- 4:12Speaker 8: they're in the film room, they're on the whiteboard, they're
- 4:15Speaker 8: drawn up plays, they're drawn up pressure packages. They, they really,
- 4:20Speaker 8: they're sickos. Like they really just live in the basement
- 4:24Speaker 8: of their facility watching film. And that, that's, That's the edge.
- 4:30Speaker 8: Maybe it takes a little bit of crazy to be
- 4:32Speaker 8: that kind.
- 4:33Speaker 9: Bill Belichick. A little bit of screw loose to be
- 4:36Speaker 9: that kind of guy.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 10: Crazy.
- 4:41Speaker 4: So Jacksonville.
- 4:43Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:45Speaker 5: I think they're a good team. And I think that
- 4:47Speaker 5: this is going to be a big challenge. And I
- 4:49Speaker 5: think I like it because it's a step. The next
- 4:53Speaker 5: step is the Bills. So we're building... uh, the challenges
- 4:57Speaker 5: to the ultimate challenge in week four.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:00Speaker 6: Good AFC contender. I mean, blue doors on Cleveland week one.
- 5:03Speaker 6: I mean, they just scored, I think their first like
- 5:05Speaker 6: four or five possessions. So, you know, it's hard to
- 5:07Speaker 6: evaluate that game because they just ran away with it. But, uh,
- 5:11Speaker 6: last week was a little bit more, you know, of
- 5:12Speaker 6: a struggle for them. Good pressure from, from Denver. I thought, uh,
- 5:16Speaker 6: you know, Bo Nix, tough start, um, rough early interception,
- 5:20Speaker 6: but stuck with it. Finally found their rhythm in the,
- 5:22Speaker 6: in the fourth quarter. And then we're able, you know,
- 5:24Speaker 6: to get the win. So, uh, To me, what stands
- 5:27Speaker 6: out is Parker Washington, I think, is just a problem,
- 5:29Speaker 6: and that seems like his favorite guy. And Everett in
- 5:32Speaker 6: his game plan, do you consider putting Gonzalez on him
- 5:37Speaker 6: at all? He's clearly the highest targeted guy, and it's
- 5:40Speaker 6: him and Thomas. And then all of a sudden, Jacoby
- 5:42Speaker 6: Myers sneaks in there. And then on the defensive side
- 5:44Speaker 6: of the ball, you know, Campanile, great background. I mean,
- 5:47Speaker 6: I love in the, in your piece, you wrote about
- 5:49Speaker 6: all the different defensive coordinators that he's worked with.
- 5:52Speaker 5: Fangio guy, right?
- 5:52Speaker 8: Fangio, Don Brown, Brian Flores, you know, just a really
- 5:57Speaker 8: cool cross section of, of different schemes that I think
- 6:01Speaker 8: you're going to see a little bit of all of them.
- 6:02Speaker 6: But I, at the end of the day, I don't
- 6:04Speaker 6: think they're the most talented defense across the board. Josh
- 6:06Speaker 6: Heinz Allen is, is, is a good player. And I've
- 6:08Speaker 6: always liked Trayvon Walker, but In terms of the fronts
- 6:12Speaker 6: we've seen, the last whatever it is, playoffs and six games,
- 6:14Speaker 6: I wouldn't say this is the best. Now, they have
- 6:16Speaker 6: a good scheme, and I think they play well. But
- 6:18Speaker 6: at the same time, there's not like those game wreckers
- 6:20Speaker 6: you look across the field and you're like, oh, my God,
- 6:22Speaker 6: how are you going to deal with all these guys?
- 6:23Speaker 3: The biggest difference I see with them as opposed to
- 6:26Speaker 3: some of the teams is like the defensive line. Seattle's
- 6:30Speaker 3: depth on the defensive line. Pittsburgh's star power on the
- 6:32Speaker 3: defensive line. You don't have that with this team. They
- 6:35Speaker 3: have some good players. I think Josh Hines-Allen's a really,
- 6:37Speaker 3: really good player. I just don't look at him as
- 6:40Speaker 3: that kind of a game wrecker. Now, he can be
- 6:42Speaker 3: if you don't pay attention to him. But, again, good players,
- 6:47Speaker 3: maybe not the depth in the level of talent that
- 6:52Speaker 3: they've seen in recent weeks.
- 6:53Speaker 6: But maybe that scheme is upcoming and maybe that they
- 6:56Speaker 6: can kind of pull it together.
- 6:58Speaker 5: They take the ball away. That's how they lived last year.
- 7:01Speaker 5: We'll see if they can do it again. The two
- 7:02Speaker 5: challenges leading up to this was defense. Seattle's in Pittsburgh
- 7:06Speaker 5: to a certain degree. This one is their offense, right?
- 7:09Speaker 2: Balance.
- 7:10Speaker 5: They have a balance team, I would say.
- 7:12Speaker 9: I think they're good in all three phases.
- 7:13Speaker 3: This is a pretty balanced team. They're pretty good.
- 7:16Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 7:17Speaker 8: I think defensively they do a lot of the things
- 7:20Speaker 8: that have given the Patriots and Drake May trouble.
- 7:22Speaker 9: We're going to have.
- 7:23Speaker 8: to talk about it, Paul, get ready for it. Cover six,
- 7:26Speaker 8: another week, you know, another back at the break, another
- 7:29Speaker 8: week of, of split safety, cover six quarters based defense. It's,
- 7:35Speaker 8: you know, the, it's the, it's scheme, you know, it's the,
- 7:37Speaker 8: it's system right now around the league. they also run
- 7:40Speaker 8: the system on the offensive side of the ball. They
- 7:42Speaker 8: run a West coast offense. It's very similar, similar to
- 7:45Speaker 8: Shanahan and McVay. Uh, and you know, that that's to me, they're,
- 7:49Speaker 8: they're well coached on both sides of the football. Um,
- 7:51Speaker 8: with deuce, I don't think they quite have the roster
- 7:53Speaker 8: talent that some of the teams, the Patriots have played
- 7:56Speaker 8: in the playoffs or in the Seattle twice and things
- 7:58Speaker 8: like that. But, uh, schematically coaching wise, uh, you know,
- 8:03Speaker 8: they came out I think it was Ted Wynn came
- 8:05Speaker 8: out with a list beginning of the year of the
- 8:06Speaker 8: best offensive play callers in the NFL, and Liam Cohen
- 8:10Speaker 8: was like five or six on the list. So, you know,
- 8:13Speaker 8: they're very well respected in terms of their scheme and
- 8:16Speaker 8: their coaching.
- 8:16Speaker 4: And he's calling the plays?
- 8:17Speaker 11: Yes.
- 8:18Speaker 4: As the head coach?
- 8:19Speaker 9: He is, yep.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Going back to the cover six. Yep.
- 8:24Speaker 5: You might've already mentioned this, but is that been around
- 8:26Speaker 5: for a long time or is that relatively new?
- 8:29Speaker 8: Relatively new. I, so Vic Fangio is the godfather of
- 8:32Speaker 8: cover six. And I would say it really started to
- 8:35Speaker 8: popularize probably around COVID like 2019, 2020, when all the
- 8:40Speaker 8: Shanahan offenses started to take over the league, they had
- 8:43Speaker 8: to find a way to keep a lid on the
- 8:46Speaker 8: defense to limit the play, the play action passes and
- 8:49Speaker 8: the explosives in the play action passing game, but also
- 8:52Speaker 8: be able to stop the run. And when you play
- 8:54Speaker 8: a quarter side of the defense, especially to the passing
- 8:56Speaker 8: strength or the formation strength of the defense, then that
- 8:59Speaker 8: quarter safety can run the alley. So he can come
- 9:02Speaker 8: downhill when he reads run and he can fast fill
- 9:06Speaker 8: against the run. So it kind of gets, even though
- 9:08Speaker 8: it is a too high shell, it can quickly morph
- 9:11Speaker 8: into single safety really quickly.
- 9:13Speaker 5: Are there any tells for cover six for a quarterback
- 9:16Speaker 5: where he comes to the lines up during cover six?
- 9:19Speaker 9: Like pre-snap tells?
- 9:20Speaker 6: Yeah, pre-snap.
- 9:21Speaker 9: You can definitely tell that they're in a too high shell.
- 9:24Speaker 9: I would say.
- 9:26Speaker 8: sometimes if you're in three by one, you could, because
- 9:30Speaker 8: they're going to cloud the three by one side of
- 9:31Speaker 8: the field most of the time. So the single receiver
- 9:34Speaker 8: side is going to get covered too. It's going to
- 9:36Speaker 8: get a corner underneath and a safety over the top.
- 9:39Speaker 8: So in theory, like you could see that side of
- 9:42Speaker 8: the field, but if you're three by one, which is
- 9:45Speaker 8: what most teams would probably run on third down these days,
- 9:48Speaker 8: like it's kind of hard to flood the, A side
- 9:50Speaker 8: of the field when you only have one receiver over there.
- 9:53Speaker 8: So what's happening is that the Patriots run a lot
- 9:55Speaker 8: of three by one. So they'll have their X receiver,
- 9:57Speaker 8: you know, AJ Brown or whoever it is. you know,
- 10:00Speaker 8: that week on that side of the field. and then
- 10:03Speaker 8: they'll have three receivers to the other side of the field.
- 10:05Speaker 8: So on one side, the defense has two against one
- 10:09Speaker 8: because they have the safety over the top and the
- 10:11Speaker 8: corner underneath. On the other side of the field, they
- 10:13Speaker 8: have four on three because they're going to have four
- 10:16Speaker 8: zone droppers on that side, on the quarter side, to
- 10:18Speaker 8: only three receivers releasing into the route. So they have numbers.
- 10:23Speaker 8: The defense has the numbers advantage on either side of
- 10:25Speaker 8: the field. So that's really where you're audible to a run. Well,
- 10:29Speaker 8: if it's third and 10, you can't audible to a right.
- 10:32Speaker 8: That's so that that's, I think what, where this system
- 10:35Speaker 8: has taken over is that it's, it's very good. You know,
- 10:38Speaker 8: it's a, it's a good scheme. And Fangio is really the,
- 10:42Speaker 8: the godfather of it. You know, the Jaguars run it
- 10:44Speaker 8: at the second highest rate in the league. Only person
- 10:47Speaker 8: that runs it more is Fangio himself in Philadelphia.
- 10:49Speaker 3: So it's going to be, I will just say just,
- 10:52Speaker 3: you know, anecdotally in the summer when we're preparing for
- 10:55Speaker 3: some of these preseason games, you get a chance to,
- 10:57Speaker 3: you know, sort of, spent some time with Devin and
- 10:59Speaker 3: Jason McCourty, and they were raving about this guy in
- 11:04Speaker 3: this scheme, Anthony Campanelli, or however, I apologize if I'm
- 11:08Speaker 3: not pronouncing his name properly, but just his breath of knowledge,
- 11:12Speaker 3: his versatility on defense, and kind of talking about the
- 11:17Speaker 3: way we have, not with all pros across the board,
- 11:22Speaker 3: just his ability to take the ball away with schemes. Um,
- 11:27Speaker 3: in some of the things that he was, so they
- 11:28Speaker 3: were very complimentary of a lot of the things that,
- 11:31Speaker 3: that Jacksonville does defensively.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Matt, do we have that clip with Brady?
- 11:34Speaker 5: Let's let's, I just want to play this cause this
- 11:36Speaker 5: came across my Twitter timeline and it's just Brady talking
- 11:40Speaker 5: about the mental aspect of quarterback.
- 11:42Speaker 4: I want to play this and then.
- 11:43Speaker 5: Just talk about how this applies to looking at today's
- 11:46Speaker 5: modern defenses.
- 11:47Speaker 12: My last Super Bowl I was a part of, I
- 11:50Speaker 12: was two weeks of watching film.
- 11:51Speaker 7: Friday night, I was just going through the film.
- 11:54Speaker 12: I knew Kansas City's defense better than they knew themselves.
- 11:58Speaker 12: I knew their body movements, the way their linebackers moved,
- 12:00Speaker 12: the way their safeties moved.
- 12:02Speaker 7: Tyron Matthew, Nick Sorensen, Cheverius Ward. I knew everything they
- 12:06Speaker 7: were doing. I got out there on the field.
- 12:07Speaker 12: I looked up as I was walking along the screen
- 12:10Speaker 12: and said, okay, they're blitzing.
- 12:12Speaker 7: And then I was dealing with it right away. I
- 12:14Speaker 7: walked up.
- 12:14Speaker 12: I said, OK, they're going to bail to cover to
- 12:16Speaker 12: ball snap cover to. And I just it was like
- 12:19Speaker 12: it was I knew I had the answers to the test.
- 12:21Speaker 12: That's where I was great. That's where my magic superpower was.
- 12:25Speaker 7: It wasn't how fast I could run. It was how
- 12:27Speaker 7: fast I could diagnose what they were doing.
- 12:30Speaker 12: What's the special quality? What's the Internet speed of me
- 12:32Speaker 12: as a quarterback?
- 12:33Speaker 7: Fast as shit. I was Starlink before Starlink.
- 12:39Speaker 12: Now other guys, if it's a slow processing speed, well,
- 12:42Speaker 12: he's going to get you. And the reality is I
- 12:45Speaker 12: could figure out what they were doing before they did
- 12:47Speaker 12: it because that's how I learned to play the game.
- 12:49Speaker 12: And that's how I believe most quarterbacks should play the game. Unfortunately,
- 12:52Speaker 12: as we've talked about, most quarterbacks aren't.
- 12:54Speaker 7: Playing the game like that anymore.
- 12:55Speaker 12: They're fast when they get out of the pocket, when
- 12:57Speaker 12: they have to make decisions. But I didn't snap the
- 12:59Speaker 12: ball unless I knew what they were doing, and if
- 13:03Speaker 12: my guys were going to be open. The one benefit
- 13:05Speaker 12: you have as a quarterback, before you snap the ball,
- 13:08Speaker 12: you know where everybody on your team is running. If
- 13:12Speaker 12: you have five eligibles out in the route, I know
- 13:14Speaker 12: where all five are going. If I look at the
- 13:17Speaker 12: defense and I say, none of my guys are going
- 13:19Speaker 12: to be open based on this coverage, we didn't design
- 13:21Speaker 12: the play for this coverage, I don't need to snap
- 13:23Speaker 12: the ball. I can run something different. I can check
- 13:26Speaker 12: to a run. I can check to a screen. I
- 13:28Speaker 12: can signal a receiver and change a route. And then
- 13:30Speaker 12: I would just make, I'd just change the route to
- 13:32Speaker 12: a route that I thought would be open. I'd catch
- 13:34Speaker 12: a ball, I'd throw it, and it'd be a 15-yard gain.
- 13:36Speaker 12: Everyone would be like, God, it looks so easy. And
- 13:40Speaker 12: I'm like, well, yeah, it's easy because you're not paying
- 13:41Speaker 12: attention to the right thing. What's going on in here
- 13:45Speaker 12: is what my superpower was. That was Peyton Manning's superpower.
- 13:48Speaker 12: That was Drew Brees' superpower. Those were the guys that
- 13:51Speaker 12: I tried to be like. That's what we did a
- 13:53Speaker 12: great job of. So that part of the game is
- 13:57Speaker 12: what I am really fascinated by. And when I see
- 13:59Speaker 12: players play like that, those are the guys that I
- 14:02Speaker 12: think have the most upside.
- 14:04Speaker 5: So when you watch that, how does that apply to
- 14:09Speaker 5: today's defenses?
- 14:10Speaker 6: And can you.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Be a Tom Brady.
- 14:13Speaker 5: In today's game and be able to walk to the
- 14:16Speaker 5: line and diagnose what you're seeing before the snap.
- 14:22Speaker 8: If you have that kind of intellect, right. I mean, like,
- 14:24Speaker 8: I think he's the best of all time. It's easy
- 14:27Speaker 8: for him to sit there and say, I knew what
- 14:30Speaker 8: they were in.
- 14:30Speaker 7: Right.
- 14:31Speaker 6: In year 19.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:32Speaker 5: Right.
- 14:33Speaker 8: And now that defense that he's talking about, that was
- 14:35Speaker 8: the Kansas city defense.
- 14:37Speaker 9: That was pre spags.
- 14:38Speaker 8: So they actually fired the defensive coordinator from the AFC
- 14:42Speaker 8: championship game at the Patriots beat them in and hired
- 14:44Speaker 8: Steve Spagnuolo the next year. So like, I get what
- 14:48Speaker 8: he's saying, but like, That's easy for Tom Brady to say.
- 14:52Speaker 8: I think, you know, another example, I know this happened
- 14:55Speaker 8: with Michael Jordan. Like Michael Jordan was just like, well,
- 14:58Speaker 8: just do this. Like, why can't you do it? And
- 15:01Speaker 8: the other players on the team were like, because I'm
- 15:03Speaker 8: not you.
- 15:04Speaker 9: I can't do that.
- 15:05Speaker 4: And that's a physical thing.
- 15:06Speaker 5: But he mentions Drew Brees and he mentions Peyton Manning,
- 15:09Speaker 5: two other guys who are notorious for doing the prep
- 15:13Speaker 5: in the film room. I wonder if a lot of
- 15:18Speaker 5: young quarterbacks are willing to spend the time grinding film because, yeah,
- 15:23Speaker 5: you need the intellect, but you also need the willingness
- 15:26Speaker 5: to devote a lot of your own time into watching film.
- 15:33Speaker 5: I mean, I don't know how true it is, but
- 15:34Speaker 5: like in Arizona back when Murray was, they had to
- 15:37Speaker 5: force him to do it.
- 15:38Speaker 6: Yeah, well, I'd ask too is how many quarterbacks have
- 15:40Speaker 6: the ability to do all the things that Tom said
- 15:42Speaker 6: at the line. I mean, I don't know. Maybe all
- 15:45Speaker 6: of them do, but I would think it's not everyone,
- 15:48Speaker 6: and that's kind of unique to certain systems where the
- 15:51Speaker 6: quarterback has that kind of control. I think there are
- 15:53Speaker 6: still systems in the NFL where it's call it, run it. Like,
- 15:56Speaker 6: this is what it is. That clip, though, reminded me
- 15:58Speaker 6: of a clip I really liked back in 2010 that
- 16:00Speaker 6: I caught Maybe it was probably 2011, actually, because it
- 16:03Speaker 6: was Eric Mangini talking about when they had beaten Brady
- 16:06Speaker 6: in 2010. And they were talking like, how do you
- 16:07Speaker 6: go against him? And what stood out to me was
- 16:10Speaker 6: if you ain't lying, you're not trying. And so pre-snap,
- 16:13Speaker 6: he said all of his guys, you have to give
- 16:16Speaker 6: him the wrong information. If you are just lining up
- 16:18Speaker 6: where you're going to be, he's going to know exactly
- 16:20Speaker 6: what you are and it's going to go. So just
- 16:23Speaker 6: an interesting kind of. to how defenses had to disguise
- 16:26Speaker 6: around him and try not to reveal what they were
- 16:28Speaker 6: going to do.
- 16:29Speaker 3: My big takeaway listening to that, and that was a
- 16:31Speaker 3: couple years old, right?
- 16:32Speaker 5: Before the Chiefs.
- 16:34Speaker 3: So I'm with Evan and Fred.
- 16:37Speaker 13: We're older.
- 16:38Speaker 5: I thought Ted Williams, not Michael Jordan.
- 16:41Speaker 3: Like, yes, okay, you are the very best who's ever
- 16:44Speaker 3: done it, and you can watch film for a couple
- 16:46Speaker 3: of weeks, and you think that everybody else can watch
- 16:48Speaker 3: film for a couple of weeks and have the same
- 16:50Speaker 3: level of intellect that you do. I don't think that
- 16:52Speaker 3: that's the case. I do think that the vast majority
- 16:54Speaker 3: of quarterbacks, young and old, watch a tremendous amount of tape.
- 16:58Speaker 3: They don't all. Like you mentioned, Kyler Murray, he had
- 17:00Speaker 3: a reputation, and I'm sure he's not alone. Some of
- 17:04Speaker 3: them probably don't do enough preparation, and that's a problem.
- 17:07Speaker 3: I think most of them do. They just don't have
- 17:09Speaker 3: the ability to dissect a defense the way that Brady
- 17:12Speaker 3: and Manning did, and Breeze, you know, They're three of,
- 17:17Speaker 3: I mean, worst case, we have the best 10 who've
- 17:19Speaker 3: ever done it. Three of the best 20 who've ever
- 17:21Speaker 3: done it. You know, like, I don't think everybody has
- 17:25Speaker 3: that ability. And that is an ability. Like, and he's
- 17:28Speaker 3: telling you, like, I did like him. And that's why
- 17:31Speaker 3: I was great.
- 17:32Speaker 6: Yeah. Doesn't lack confidence.
- 17:34Speaker 5: I like that one.
- 17:35Speaker 3: But that is an ability. Yeah.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Right.
- 17:38Speaker 3: And it's undersold because it's not part of your tangible traits,
- 17:41Speaker 3: your athletic skills.
- 17:42Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 17:43Speaker 3: No, you know more than everybody else. That's an ability,
- 17:47Speaker 3: as Evan likes to call it, that's a superpower.
- 17:49Speaker 5: Well, you know, you hear all these stories about, oh,
- 17:51Speaker 5: you know, at the combine, we put him up at
- 17:52Speaker 5: a whiteboard and we asked him these questions.
- 17:54Speaker 4: He was great.
- 17:55Speaker 5: You know, we told him, you know, diagram this and
- 17:57Speaker 5: he was able to diagram that. But that's not the
- 18:00Speaker 5: same thing. That's not the same thing.
- 18:02Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 18:03Speaker 4: You know?
- 18:03Speaker 9: I just.
- 18:05Speaker 8: I'm not, it was great analysis. It's great to hear
- 18:07Speaker 8: his thought process. I just think it's kind of, I
- 18:11Speaker 8: don't know what the word is.
- 18:12Speaker 5: It's just, just be awesome.
- 18:14Speaker 9: It doesn't matter. Like, okay, cool.
- 18:16Speaker 8: Like if we put Tom Brady's brain and Drake May's body,
- 18:19Speaker 8: then yes, he would probably be a top five quarterback
- 18:21Speaker 8: of all time.
- 18:23Speaker 9: But like, you can't do that. You can't.
- 18:24Speaker 8: And I think with a lot of these other quarterbacks,
- 18:26Speaker 8: like Brady couldn't run. Brady didn't get outside the pocket.
- 18:30Speaker 8: Brady didn't extend plays like Drake may can't. And I
- 18:32Speaker 8: think what teams are trying to do and offensive coordinators
- 18:36Speaker 8: are trying to do is try to design around that superpower.
- 18:39Speaker 8: So Brady's superpower was his ability, his intellect, his brain,
- 18:43Speaker 8: as he just told us. Drake May's superpower is his athleticism,
- 18:47Speaker 8: is his raw talent. Josh Allen's superpower is his raw talent.
- 18:51Speaker 8: So I think a lot of what they're trying to
- 18:53Speaker 8: do with those quarterbacks is just different than what they
- 18:56Speaker 8: were asking Brady to do.
- 18:57Speaker 9: You know, Josh Allen's rolling out like 20% of the time.
- 19:01Speaker 8: And through two games, like, cause that's his superpower is
- 19:05Speaker 8: getting out of the pocket and making plays with his
- 19:07Speaker 8: legs and his arm. So like, it's just a different
- 19:10Speaker 8: style of quarterback, I guess.
- 19:12Speaker 5: So these VR rooms that the Patriots have, and most
- 19:15Speaker 5: teams have now in their facilities, how much do you
- 19:18Speaker 5: think that can help to be able to go into
- 19:21Speaker 5: a game having the answer?
- 19:23Speaker 6: Well, that, that to me is the great question, Fred,
- 19:25Speaker 6: because you know, I don't want to say that I
- 19:27Speaker 6: assume just because Drake May was in Josh McDaniel's system
- 19:30Speaker 6: that he would acquire the same kind of supercomputer that
- 19:33Speaker 6: Tom Brady had. So really, to me, the question is,
- 19:37Speaker 6: what point can Drake get to? Because he can have
- 19:39Speaker 6: this freedom to at least get them out of bad plays.
- 19:42Speaker 6: And I think it'll be a little bit you know,
- 19:44Speaker 6: of a process. But in terms of the VR room,
- 19:46Speaker 6: I think it's great. You know, I mean, I think
- 19:47Speaker 6: the things they were doing in the summer with him
- 19:49Speaker 6: going to the line without a play is great. It's
- 19:52Speaker 6: been hard to see tangible results here early on in
- 19:55Speaker 6: the season. But I'm still remaining confident that, you know,
- 19:58Speaker 6: he can get to a certain point. I just don't
- 20:00Speaker 6: expect him to ever get to that phase like Brady is.
- 20:03Speaker 6: We're like, oh, I see what you guys are doing.
- 20:05Speaker 6: And I think defenses are probably better at disguising too now.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:10Speaker 5: I just thought that was interesting in terms of the
- 20:14Speaker 5: whole cover six thing. Because it seems to be giving
- 20:17Speaker 5: quarterbacks trouble. And if there's a way to.
- 20:21Speaker 3: And I wonder how much of it is just.
- 20:26Speaker 3: It's preventing you necessarily... If you can run the ball.
- 20:32Speaker 3: I think you can sort of get teams out of this.
- 20:34Speaker 3: I mean, it's the whole thing with, you know, basically
- 20:36Speaker 3: it's the too high shell, right? I mean, it's more
- 20:39Speaker 3: complicated than that, as Evan explained. But if you can
- 20:43Speaker 3: run the ball a little bit better, Seattle was dominant
- 20:46Speaker 3: with those two guys inside, and Murphy and Williams, and
- 20:49Speaker 3: they don't let you run. So you can't get out
- 20:52Speaker 3: of those third and tens that are killing you. Now,
- 20:55Speaker 3: they ran the ball a little better, I thought, against Pittsburgh.
- 20:58Speaker 3: Obviously had the explosives with, How's that?
- 21:02Speaker 6: The X.
- 21:04Speaker 4: No, no.
- 21:05Speaker 3: You know, they had one of each, you know, with
- 21:09Speaker 3: Stevenson and Henderson with a touchdown. That might be the
- 21:13Speaker 3: best way to get you out of those defenses. You know,
- 21:16Speaker 3: I don't know if it's just a lack of recognition or, like,
- 21:19Speaker 3: these are good defenses if you can't run the ball
- 21:22Speaker 3: to defend the stuff that everybody wants to do.
- 21:25Speaker 9: Yeah, I don't think it's a lack of recognition. I
- 21:28Speaker 9: think that.
- 21:29Speaker 8: Cover six inherently takes down a lot of passing concepts.
- 21:34Speaker 8: It checks a lot of different boxes and takes a
- 21:36Speaker 8: lot of different things away from the quarterback where basically
- 21:39Speaker 8: you're forcing the quarterback to just take a check down
- 21:42Speaker 8: and live to play another down. The issue is, is
- 21:44Speaker 8: that it's usually used on passing situations. So if you're
- 21:48Speaker 8: taking a check down on third and 10, well, now
- 21:50Speaker 8: you're punting.
- 21:51Speaker 9: Right.
- 21:51Speaker 8: So like that, yeah, that might be the right play
- 21:53Speaker 8: to avoid a turnover. But I think Drake made through
- 21:56Speaker 8: the interception to pop Douglas in the opener, trying to
- 21:59Speaker 8: make a play.
- 22:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 9: It's third down. It's third and long.
- 22:01Speaker 8: He's trying to make a play down the field to
- 22:03Speaker 8: keep the offense on the field. And he ends up
- 22:05Speaker 8: throwing a pick.
- 22:06Speaker 5: So I think your point is the best one. Usually
- 22:09Speaker 5: to combat that is don't get into third and long,
- 22:12Speaker 5: you know, have a balanced attack so that you're running
- 22:16Speaker 5: the ball. Well, your short passes is like a short run.
- 22:20Speaker 5: And it's third and two or third and one. And
- 22:22Speaker 5: now you're taking them out of cover six.
- 22:24Speaker 3: And if Mike Rabel was here, he'd, you know, snark
- 22:27Speaker 3: at me and say, well, geez, you know, you think
- 22:29Speaker 3: we want to be in third and long?
- 22:31Speaker 4: No, I know. I know.
- 22:32Speaker 3: So it is simplistic.
- 22:33Speaker 14: Right.
- 22:34Speaker 3: But I do also think, again, to the caliber of,
- 22:37Speaker 3: you know, opponents you're talking about. And I'm not a
- 22:39Speaker 3: big fan of all of this. Well, these are the
- 22:41Speaker 3: best defense. Like, just I'm just want to be Seattle specific.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Because Seattle, to me, is much different. Seattle and Houston.
- 22:49Speaker 3: But Seattle specifically is night and day better than what
- 22:54Speaker 3: they saw last week with Pittsburgh. You just see the
- 22:56Speaker 3: rally to the ball on these checkdowns that Evan's talking about.
- 23:00Speaker 3: They don't let you squirm through for a four-yard pass
- 23:03Speaker 3: that turns into a nine-yard gain. It's a four-yard pass
- 23:06Speaker 3: that results in a gain of five because they're right there,
- 23:10Speaker 3: and they're consistently right there making sure tackles and not
- 23:13Speaker 3: allowing you to get past the chains after the catch.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Do you think talent has anything to do with it?
- 23:20Speaker 3: Mike McDonald will tell you that.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Just a little bit?
- 23:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Just a little bit.
- 23:23Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 23:23Speaker 6: Talent scheme.
- 23:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:25Speaker 5: I mean, you can only scheme so much, but if
- 23:27Speaker 5: your guys can't make good tackles, then, you know, that's why, like,
- 23:31Speaker 5: the Ravens of the early 2000s with Ray Lewis and
- 23:33Speaker 5: that team, they were such sure tacklers. You know, in
- 23:37Speaker 5: the open field, close to the line of scrimmage, everybody
- 23:40Speaker 5: on the team knew how to tackle.
- 23:42Speaker 3: But I just remember going into that opener and listening
- 23:44Speaker 3: to Evan talk and listening to people talk about Seattle specifically.
- 23:48Speaker 3: It's like, that's exactly what they want you to do.
- 23:51Speaker 3: They want you to throw short because they're confident that
- 23:54Speaker 3: they're going to be there, and they're not going to
- 23:56Speaker 3: let you get first downs by doing that.
- 23:57Speaker 8: Or eventually, you know, like I keep going back to
- 23:59Speaker 8: the last drive of the game. It's a 15-play drive.
- 24:03Speaker 12: Right.
- 24:03Speaker 8: So they're making you march, and then they're expecting you
- 24:06Speaker 8: to eventually make a mistake.
- 24:08Speaker 6: Right.
- 24:08Speaker 9: And that's exactly what happened.
- 24:09Speaker 3: And even on that drive, to your point of... In
- 24:12Speaker 3: the regular part of the game, that drive would have
- 24:14Speaker 3: ended twice. They had two fourth-down conversions. Only because you're
- 24:18Speaker 3: losing with less than two minutes left, you have to
- 24:21Speaker 3: go for it now. So even then, they had to
- 24:24Speaker 3: get fourth downs in the regular part of the game.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Those are punts.
- 24:29Speaker 10: All right.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Good stuff.
- 24:31Speaker 5: So we can talk about that. Today is Wednesday, so
- 24:34Speaker 5: Mike Vrabel will be coming to the podium around 1 o'clock.
- 24:38Speaker 5: So we'll have that live on Patriots.com. We won't have
- 24:41Speaker 5: it during the show because we're 11-1 now because of that.
- 24:44Speaker 5: And that's followed by locker room access and practice today.
- 24:47Speaker 6: Big practice today. All those injuries, who's going to be
- 24:51Speaker 6: out there? I think it's interesting to see guys like
- 24:54Speaker 6: Craig Woodson. Obviously, Michael Muñoz was moved to IR, so
- 24:58Speaker 6: he's out.
- 24:58Speaker 3: We should say that because I don't think that had
- 25:00Speaker 3: happened officially yesterday. Michael Muñoz? Yeah.
- 25:04Speaker 5: During the show yesterday? No, it hadn't happened officially.
- 25:07Speaker 3: We should say that he officially was placed on IR.
- 25:09Speaker 6: Officially on IR. And I'm kind of interested in Raritan.
- 25:12Speaker 6: I just liked seeing him stay out there and thought
- 25:15Speaker 6: he was bringing a little bit of something into the offense.
- 25:17Speaker 6: So I'd see what those guys are going on. And
- 25:20Speaker 6: Del Pettis, too. I mean, he's another one. Those two safeties,
- 25:22Speaker 6: I mean, that's a huge question. With these three receivers
- 25:25Speaker 6: that they have Are you going to be looking at,
- 25:27Speaker 6: you know, Bayard with Saunders?
- 25:29Speaker 3: Mike Brown?
- 25:31Speaker 6: Jalen Reed?
- 25:31Speaker 8: Mike Brown, yeah. I think those are the two guys
- 25:34Speaker 8: that they would probably lean on. It sounds like Mike
- 25:37Speaker 8: Brown would probably take, like, the Del Pettis special teams position.
- 25:41Speaker 8: roles and Jalen Reed would, would start next to Bayard
- 25:44Speaker 8: if they had to get to that point. But I,
- 25:47Speaker 8: I look at Raritan as a, you know, we're talking
- 25:49Speaker 8: about all this cover six stuff and everything.
- 25:50Speaker 9: Like it was just Pittsburgh.
- 25:52Speaker 8: And I don't know if every team like Jacksonville doesn't
- 25:54Speaker 8: play a ton of base defense, but the fact that
- 25:57Speaker 8: Pittsburgh felt compelled by, to put base defense on the
- 25:59Speaker 8: field against the Patriots when they put Raritan and Henry
- 26:02Speaker 8: both on the field. Like that's the type of matchup
- 26:05Speaker 8: hunting that you want to be able to do is
- 26:07Speaker 8: try to find a matchup with your tight ends against
- 26:10Speaker 8: the linebacker. That's something that you can't exploit. So obviously
- 26:14Speaker 8: the Steelers might've just played it that way. And maybe
- 26:16Speaker 8: that's independent of them, but maybe teams are looking at
- 26:19Speaker 8: Raritan as like a serviceable blocker and we can't play
- 26:22Speaker 8: small against the you know, the Patriots and two tight ends,
- 26:26Speaker 8: which wasn't the case last year when the Patriots put
- 26:28Speaker 8: Henry and Hooper on the field together last year, nobody
- 26:31Speaker 8: cared and no one reacted to it. So that, that's
- 26:34Speaker 8: what the, those were the reactions that they were hoping
- 26:36Speaker 8: to get it out of Raritan. Like, are you doing
- 26:38Speaker 8: that with Cameron Latu or Tanner Arkin? Like, are you
- 26:41Speaker 8: really worried about those guys as pass catchers that you're
- 26:44Speaker 8: going to put them on the field and change the
- 26:45Speaker 8: way you play defense?
- 26:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:47Speaker 6: I wonder about the defensive packages too. I mean, Pettis
- 26:49Speaker 6: was their third safety kind of playing that linebacker role.
- 26:52Speaker 6: You know, do you maybe play a little bit more
- 26:54Speaker 6: four-corner with Charles Woods playing pretty good? You know, does
- 26:57Speaker 6: that how you defend the pass with some of the
- 26:59Speaker 6: guys that you still trust? But some big questions for sure.
- 27:02Speaker 3: And do you get Carlton Davis back? That's the key
- 27:05Speaker 3: to the point.
- 27:05Speaker 5: He didn't practice at.
- 27:07Speaker 3: All last week. I'm not just penciling him in the
- 27:10Speaker 3: lineup until he gets out there to practice. We'll see
- 27:12Speaker 3: when Ev goes out. We won't get to hear the song.
- 27:16Speaker 5: Over the course of the day, I'm sure we'll get
- 27:18Speaker 5: other writers' observations on who was out there for practice.
- 27:21Speaker 5: We'll get the official participation report around 4 o'clock or
- 27:25Speaker 5: whenever they issue that. That'll be on Patriot Social, Patriot.com.
- 27:31Speaker 5: We'll see who At.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Full participation, partial, whatever.
- 27:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 27:36Speaker 4: Although, I think some of these guys might be game
- 27:39Speaker 4: time decisions. I don't know. I don't know.
- 27:41Speaker 8: According to our friend Doc Chow, there's no such thing
- 27:43Speaker 8: as a game time decision.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Oh, really?
- 27:45Speaker 8: Yeah, he was talking about that the other day. I
- 27:47Speaker 8: think it was with maybe Malik Neighbors. It was somebody
- 27:51Speaker 8: that was like, They were saying, oh, it's a real 50-50,
- 27:53Speaker 8: and he was like, let me tell you, it's never 50-50.
- 27:56Speaker 5: I disagree with that.
- 27:59Speaker 3: I think there's guys that go through workouts, and they
- 28:01Speaker 3: don't like what they see, and that's when they make
- 28:03Speaker 3: the decision.
- 28:04Speaker 9: They're always leaning one way, according to our friend.
- 28:08Speaker 5: When you have this type of injury situation the Patriots have,
- 28:11Speaker 5: Is it a disadvantage to be on the road because
- 28:13Speaker 5: you have to declare a little earlier?
- 28:15Speaker 8: So normally I would say yes, but they've actually been
- 28:17Speaker 8: pretty open about it. They declared Carlton Davis out on
- 28:20Speaker 8: Saturday last week as the home team.
- 28:22Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 28:23Speaker 8: So they've been a little bit more open about injuries
- 28:28Speaker 8: than like Belichick era when he would make you go
- 28:31Speaker 8: down to the wire of inactives to find out if
- 28:33Speaker 8: a guy was playing or not. So they've done that
- 28:36Speaker 8: a couple of times over the last two years that
- 28:37Speaker 8: on Saturday they've declared downgraded guys to to out as
- 28:41Speaker 8: the home team, which I don't think is necessarily required
- 28:44Speaker 8: all the time.
- 28:44Speaker 4: So I don't think it is.
- 28:45Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 28:46Speaker 3: So it should be.
- 28:49Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 28:49Speaker 5: Don't you think like, cause me for the fantasy, no,
- 28:52Speaker 5: for the fairness.
- 28:53Speaker 15: No.
- 28:53Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 28:54Speaker 6: For equity. Yeah.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Like you, if you don't make a trip, that's why
- 28:58Speaker 3: the road team does it. Cause if a guy doesn't, again,
- 29:01Speaker 3: this goes back to Belichick, as Evan pointed out, I
- 29:04Speaker 3: believe Richard Seymour didn't make a trip one year and
- 29:06Speaker 3: he wasn't ruled out. He didn't even make the trip
- 29:10Speaker 3: until you found out 90 minutes before the game, and
- 29:13Speaker 3: then you found there was reporting and all that. And
- 29:15Speaker 3: I think they made that switch. The league actually made
- 29:17Speaker 3: the switch to say that if a guy doesn't make
- 29:19Speaker 3: a trip, he.
- 29:20Speaker 9: Needs to be declared out.
- 29:22Speaker 6: Well, he can't come on a later plane?
- 29:24Speaker 9: Kyle Duggar did that.
- 29:25Speaker 3: But I think the home team, if the home team
- 29:27Speaker 3: knows that a guy is out, then if he wouldn't
- 29:31Speaker 3: have traveled.
- 29:34Speaker 3: Again, I understand there's a gray area there.
- 29:36Speaker 5: Well, we didn't know.
- 29:37Speaker 3: You know, we, you know, turns out he couldn't play.
- 29:40Speaker 3: I think both teams should have to do that.
- 29:42Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 29:43Speaker 6: Okay.
- 29:44Speaker 4: Jordan, Marilyn writes in podcast at patris.com.
- 29:47Speaker 5: Not concerned about the team being the team long-term, but
- 29:50Speaker 5: I think this is a must win game against the
- 29:53Speaker 5: Jags going into Buffalo at two and one gives us
- 29:55Speaker 5: some crucial momentum for, heading into Highmark Stadium, and it
- 29:59Speaker 5: lets us get out of a tough September clearly, cleanly,
- 30:03Speaker 5: especially with A.J.
- 30:04Speaker 4: Brown and Drake May both in a bit of a slump.
- 30:06Speaker 7: A.J.
- 30:06Speaker 4: Brown's in more than a slump. Well, A.J.
- 30:08Speaker 9: Brown's hurt.
- 30:08Speaker 4: He's in a boot.
- 30:12Speaker 5: Would you guys also call this a must-win before heading
- 30:15Speaker 5: to Buffalo? I do not.
- 30:17Speaker 9: I would not either.
- 30:18Speaker 6: No, no. I understand what he's saying, though. You'd like
- 30:20Speaker 6: to have some momentum and be feeling good about yourself
- 30:22Speaker 6: before you walk into that hornet's nest and have to
- 30:24Speaker 6: deal with Josh Allen again, but We all knew what
- 30:26Speaker 6: the schedule was going to be like. We know going
- 30:28Speaker 6: out of Florida is tough. I don't know what the
- 30:29Speaker 6: weather is going to be like. I'm assuming it's going
- 30:30Speaker 6: to be hot. It's supposed to be low 80s.
- 30:32Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't think it's supposed to be super bad. Yeah,
- 30:35Speaker 8: based on my boots on the ground down in Jacksonville.
- 30:38Speaker 6: Remember that? What was that? There was one opener.
- 30:39Speaker 15: 2018.
- 30:39Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 30:41Speaker 6: It was like 1,000 degrees down there.
- 30:43Speaker 9: It was so hot.
- 30:44Speaker 3: Early in the season, they just got absolutely waxed. It
- 30:47Speaker 3: was right after the NFC Championship.
- 30:48Speaker 11: 31-20.
- 30:48Speaker 5: Yeah, and the game was not that close.
- 30:51Speaker 6: What was your stat you said today in the meeting?
- 30:53Speaker 6: That was the first home opener they've won in six years.
- 30:56Speaker 6: Since 2019 with Pittsburgh?
- 30:58Speaker 3: 2020.
- 30:58Speaker 6: They won Cam Newton with Miami.
- 31:01Speaker 3: It's Cam Newton.
- 31:02Speaker 6: Cam Newton with Miami.
- 31:05Speaker 9: All the quarterback runs.
- 31:06Speaker 3: That was the last home opener they won.
- 31:10Speaker 8: I did the research on 0-2 teams before last week.
- 31:14Speaker 8: I haven't done 1-2 teams, but with the 7th playoff
- 31:17Speaker 8: spot now, the 0-2 thing used to be a death
- 31:21Speaker 8: sentence in the NFL. Since they went to 7 playoff teams,
- 31:25Speaker 8: it hasn't been quite as much of a death sentence,
- 31:27Speaker 8: so I'd assume that the 1-2 numbers are about the same.
- 31:31Speaker 3: I don't know about numbers and all that. You're going
- 31:34Speaker 3: on the road to play a team that won 13
- 31:35Speaker 3: games last year. I don't think that You stink if
- 31:39Speaker 3: you lose. I don't think that's a must-win kind of
- 31:41Speaker 3: a situation. I don't think the Buffalo game would be
- 31:44Speaker 3: a must-win situation either. I think these are games that
- 31:47Speaker 3: people looked at the schedule and said, that's going to
- 31:49Speaker 3: be a tough game. Now, I did think that Pittsburgh
- 31:52Speaker 3: was kind of a must-win. I thought that was the
- 31:56Speaker 3: home game against clearly the— the least talented team out
- 32:03Speaker 3: of the four that they're facing in September at home,
- 32:05Speaker 3: you have to win that game. And they did. And
- 32:07Speaker 3: they won it easily.
- 32:08Speaker 6: Yeah, I look to what's Jacksonville's headspace after losing that
- 32:11Speaker 6: game in Denver. Now you've got the Patriots, another AFC
- 32:15Speaker 6: team who was in the Super Bowl last year coming in.
- 32:16Speaker 6: I mean, to them, I feel like it's kind of
- 32:18Speaker 6: a proving game. Like, you know, hey, we kind of
- 32:20Speaker 6: let Denver off the hook last week. Let's beat the
- 32:22Speaker 6: Patriots and get back on track.
- 32:24Speaker 4: What's the early spread? Do we know?
- 32:25Speaker 5: I think they're... Patriots by three.
- 32:27Speaker 3: I mean, the Jaguars by three.
- 32:28Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 32:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:29Speaker 9: So it's a, you know.
- 32:30Speaker 4: You get three, so it's a wash.
- 32:32Speaker 9: I was waiting for that.
- 32:33Speaker 2: Of course.
- 32:34Speaker 5: Jordan also wants to know, how do our cornerbacks match
- 32:38Speaker 5: up against their receivers?
- 32:39Speaker 9: Yeah, I think this is an interesting problem.
- 32:42Speaker 8: Problem might not be the right word, but interesting discussion
- 32:45Speaker 8: because typically I would say Parker Washington's and Marcus Jones's
- 32:50Speaker 8: kind of matchup, but catch and run over the middle
- 32:53Speaker 8: type of receiver that you want your fastest corner, good
- 32:55Speaker 8: tackler like Marcus Jones on. Uh, but he is so
- 32:59Speaker 8: far and away the engine of that offense that do
- 33:02Speaker 8: you think Christian Gonzalez can take him out of the game?
- 33:05Speaker 8: But in order to put Gonzalez on them, that's a
- 33:07Speaker 8: lot of slot reps. It's a lot of movement plays.
- 33:10Speaker 8: Like there's a lot of things going on with Parker
- 33:12Speaker 8: Washington and, He reminded the way they use them.
- 33:14Speaker 9: It reminds me a lot of like Khalil Shakir.
- 33:16Speaker 8: So like, you know, is that exactly the type of
- 33:18Speaker 8: matchup that you want to put Gonzalez on the only
- 33:21Speaker 8: receiver that has a higher target share than Parker Washington
- 33:24Speaker 8: through two weeks as JSN. He's the most second, most
- 33:27Speaker 8: targeted receiver in the league right now, besides Jackson Smith
- 33:31Speaker 8: and Jigba. Like that's, that's the guy like it's not BTJ.
- 33:34Speaker 8: It's not Jacoby Myers, but the way he plays and
- 33:37Speaker 8: where he plays on the field is definitely more a
- 33:40Speaker 8: Marcus Jones assignment than it is a Christian Gonzalez assignment.
- 33:43Speaker 4: And what if Carlton Davis doesn't play? Is that huge?
- 33:47Speaker 9: I don't think so.
- 33:49Speaker 8: Cause like BTJ has just not been the guy that
- 33:52Speaker 8: he was as a rookie for the last two years. I,
- 33:55Speaker 8: he doesn't look right to me.
- 33:57Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 33:57Speaker 8: I don't know what it is like physically. He doesn't
- 34:00Speaker 8: have the burst that he did, uh, as a, you know,
- 34:03Speaker 8: young in an LSU and his rookie season with the Jaguars.
- 34:06Speaker 8: So I, I don't necessarily think that Charles Woods would
- 34:09Speaker 8: be like overwhelmed by a matchup with him.
- 34:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:13Speaker 3: I would, what I totally agree with Evan about, uh,
- 34:15Speaker 3: how he's looked. I watched a little of that Denver game,
- 34:18Speaker 3: you know, drop and just doesn't look the same. I
- 34:21Speaker 3: do remember what he did in London to Christian Gonzalez.
- 34:27Speaker 9: Ran right by him.
- 34:29Speaker 3: So in the back of my mind, I wonder, might
- 34:32Speaker 3: this be a get right game for Brian Thomas? If
- 34:35Speaker 3: Charles Woods, you know, is covering him that I agree
- 34:41Speaker 3: that he has not looked right, but I still remember
- 34:44Speaker 3: the talent. And, you know, I respect the talent.
- 34:48Speaker 5: No, he did.
- 34:49Speaker 3: I think it's probably a thing with this offense that's whatever,
- 34:52Speaker 3: you know, I don't know. And again, I don't know
- 34:54Speaker 3: enough about the Jags or whatever to say like, well,
- 34:57Speaker 3: they're asking him to do X, Y and Z. And
- 34:59Speaker 3: that's not really in his skill set. But that's what
- 35:01Speaker 3: it seems to me is just not a great fit
- 35:03Speaker 3: for him. And now I think it's mental because I
- 35:06Speaker 3: see him dropping passes and just not looking right. But
- 35:10Speaker 3: there's still a good player there. And Jacoby Myers, I think,
- 35:13Speaker 3: is still a guy to respect. He had a big
- 35:15Speaker 3: game last year against the Patriots before he got hurt
- 35:19Speaker 3: in the opener against the Raiders. He's been a little
- 35:22Speaker 3: quiet in terms of, as Ev said, the target shares
- 35:25Speaker 3: so far, but he can make plays. Just one catch,
- 35:29Speaker 3: but big play last week. Big third down conversion.
- 35:31Speaker 6: Physical guy, savvy guy. We know him well. It's just
- 35:34Speaker 6: interesting because it's like if you just went one for
- 35:36Speaker 6: one and you went Gonzalez on Brian Thomas and you
- 35:39Speaker 6: went Marcus Jones on the slide, you went Carlton Davis. Um,
- 35:42Speaker 6: you know, on the other side, uh, um, against shit,
- 35:45Speaker 6: I lost my mind against Myers.
- 35:48Speaker 3: It's, um, I don't know.
- 35:50Speaker 6: It's just a lot of mixing and matching. Like, and
- 35:52Speaker 6: I don't know if any of those match up. You've
- 35:54Speaker 6: great Gonzalez on anybody.
- 35:55Speaker 7: Great.
- 35:55Speaker 6: But I don't know, not ideal. I mean, I don't
- 35:57Speaker 6: even know Marcus Jones on, on Jacoby Gonzalez. I don't know,
- 36:01Speaker 6: it's a little bit of a physical mismatch. One other
- 36:03Speaker 6: thing I'd say is that, you know, Marcus Jones got
- 36:04Speaker 6: a little banged up in that game last week too.
- 36:06Speaker 6: I mean, is he definitely out here today? I hope so, but,
- 36:09Speaker 6: you know, is there, and also is there a world where,
- 36:11Speaker 6: and I know, you know, they dropped Marcus Jones into
- 36:13Speaker 6: some deep coverage as well. Maybe he's part of the
- 36:16Speaker 6: equation with some of the safety depth problems that they've
- 36:18Speaker 6: had as well.
- 36:18Speaker 8: BTJ is the guy that I got circled on my
- 36:23Speaker 8: list because I think that the reasons that he's not
- 36:26Speaker 8: succeeding in Jacksonville are schematic.
- 36:28Speaker 9: He is an isolation receiver. You want to put him.
- 36:32Speaker 8: on the outside or even in the slot and he
- 36:34Speaker 8: wants to run one-on-one routes on the outside that's what
- 36:37Speaker 8: he did at LSU you know they they would spam
- 36:40Speaker 8: slot fades with him Malik neighbors and it was just
- 36:43Speaker 8: pick a side where's the safety going and Jane Jane
- 36:45Speaker 8: Daniels is throwing the other direction And he's the type
- 36:48Speaker 8: of receiver, size, speed, vertical threat that would Drake May,
- 36:52Speaker 8: and in an offense that's more spread-oriented, I think would
- 36:55Speaker 8: really thrive. But Jacksonville, they run a lot of condensed formations.
- 36:59Speaker 8: They play under center a lot. It's much more of
- 37:02Speaker 8: like a Ramsey type of offense. So you're looking more
- 37:04Speaker 8: for that like Puka Nakua type of receiver versus like
- 37:08Speaker 8: a Brian Thomas Jr.
- 37:09Speaker 9: Type of receiver.
- 37:10Speaker 8: So does that eventually lead to a split for Brian
- 37:14Speaker 8: Thomas Jr.
- 37:14Speaker 9: In Jacksonville? If I'm Elliot Wolfe, I'm... I'm monitoring that situation.
- 37:19Speaker 5: Don and Philly, do you see the Jags' run game
- 37:22Speaker 5: or passing game to be more of a problem for
- 37:24Speaker 5: the Patriots' defense?
- 37:25Speaker 6: Which one?
- 37:26Speaker 9: Run game.
- 37:27Speaker 4: Run game?
- 37:27Speaker 8: Their run game is really well-coordinated. are top 10 in
- 37:32Speaker 8: the league in motion rate. They use a lot of shifts,
- 37:34Speaker 8: a lot of motion pre-snap to confuse you. They had
- 37:37Speaker 8: the Browns in a complete blender. Those guys didn't know
- 37:40Speaker 8: what they were doing when they were motion across formation.
- 37:43Speaker 8: So they, they design it well. They're mostly outside zone.
- 37:47Speaker 8: They're heavy outside zone team, but they have good change-ups
- 37:50Speaker 8: that they can run as well. It's a really fast
- 37:54Speaker 8: explosive running back that kind of like Travion Henderson, when
- 37:57Speaker 8: you get them in the open field, he can hit
- 37:59Speaker 8: home runs. So I think their run game is really
- 38:03Speaker 8: where it starts and ends for them.
- 38:04Speaker 4: He agrees.
- 38:05Speaker 5: I'm worried that early big runs will set up play
- 38:07Speaker 5: action and put us in base. I feel confident that
- 38:10Speaker 5: our corners can cover their receivers, but we will have
- 38:13Speaker 5: to respect the run. And how do we put Trevor
- 38:16Speaker 5: Lawrence in a blender?
- 38:17Speaker 3: So that's why I agree with Evan's answer.
- 38:20Speaker 9: That's the game right there.
- 38:22Speaker 3: If you stop the run or you contain the run
- 38:24Speaker 3: and you put him in passing situations, that's when you
- 38:27Speaker 3: can turn up the heat.
- 38:28Speaker 9: That's the game right there to me. All these West
- 38:30Speaker 9: Coast coaches are the same.
- 38:32Speaker 8: They all want to get you in that run play
- 38:34Speaker 8: action loop where it's first and second down the entire game.
- 38:37Speaker 8: And you just can't get them into third and pass
- 38:39Speaker 8: and get your packages on the field to blitz them
- 38:41Speaker 8: and things like that. And the Jaguars are no different.
- 38:45Speaker 8: You see week one against Cleveland. They ran it right
- 38:47Speaker 8: down their throats and Cleveland can't get off the field.
- 38:50Speaker 8: And week two against the Broncos, they were able to
- 38:51Speaker 8: stop the run a little bit, and they were able
- 38:53Speaker 8: to get them into third down and make some stops.
- 38:55Speaker 8: So that's the entire game to me is can the
- 38:58Speaker 8: Patriots get Jacksonville into a drop-back passing game, into third
- 39:02Speaker 8: and pass, and then be able to come after Lawrence.
- 39:04Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 39:06Speaker 6: Feed into Barmore and Williams and your coverage and everything
- 39:09Speaker 6: that you do best.
- 39:10Speaker 9: Yep.
- 39:11Speaker 5: Owas from Houston, been a PU fan. For the last
- 39:16Speaker 5: 15 years, I found Catch-22 through this podcast, and I
- 39:19Speaker 5: find myself enjoying the in-depth talk more than P.U.
- 39:23Speaker 6: Oh.
- 39:23Speaker 5: Kudos to Alex and Evan.
- 39:25Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 39:26Speaker 5: My question, which last play lost? was more painful? Last
- 39:32Speaker 5: play loss, losing to the Seahawks the way we did, where,
- 39:36Speaker 5: you know, made through the interception, the Miami miracle, or
- 39:41Speaker 5: Brady throwing his last pass as an interception and playoff
- 39:44Speaker 5: exit when we had one of the better defenses toward
- 39:46Speaker 5: the end of Brady's career with the Pats?
- 39:49Speaker 8: I don't even think the Brady interception ranks for me.
- 39:51Speaker 8: That game was over.
- 39:54Speaker 3: Whether the season was going to end that day or
- 39:56Speaker 3: the next game.
- 39:57Speaker 9: And they were also throwing out of their own heads.
- 39:59Speaker 4: So which was the most painful of those three?
- 40:02Speaker 9: Miami Miracle.
- 40:03Speaker 4: I agree.
- 40:04Speaker 9: That was bad.
- 40:05Speaker 3: I mean, at the time, too, people forget because they
- 40:09Speaker 3: bounce back from it.
- 40:10Speaker 4: They won the Super Bowl.
- 40:11Speaker 6: But, like.
- 40:12Speaker 4: There was a crisis that year. Yeah.
- 40:14Speaker 6: They did good.
- 40:14Speaker 9: They lost back-to-back games.
- 40:16Speaker 3: That put it, like... This is... The season's kind of
- 40:19Speaker 3: in jeopardy here. So it wasn't just, like, an epic
- 40:22Speaker 3: collapse on the play.
- 40:23Speaker 5: It was, like, what.
- 40:25Speaker 3: Are we going to do what we always do here?
- 40:27Speaker 3: Are we going to go to the AFC Championship? Are
- 40:28Speaker 3: we going to go to the Super Bowl?
- 40:30Speaker 8: One of those times, too, where, like... why was Gronk
- 40:34Speaker 8: on the field? Like they put him on the field
- 40:36Speaker 8: for the Hail Mary, but like there was no way
- 40:39Speaker 8: the quarterback was reaching the end zone on a Hail
- 40:41Speaker 8: Mary from that field position. So the only thing that
- 40:44Speaker 8: they could possibly do was, was lateral and try to
- 40:47Speaker 8: run some sort of lateral play. And they, they put
- 40:50Speaker 8: Gronk on the field and I mean, the rest is history,
- 40:53Speaker 8: but every time we go down to Miami, they have
- 40:56Speaker 8: pictures of it all over the place.
- 40:57Speaker 5: It really is amazing.
- 40:58Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 40:59Speaker 5: Well, they have that in 72. I mean, that's all
- 41:01Speaker 5: they've got.
- 41:02Speaker 8: But are those always up, or do they just put
- 41:04Speaker 8: those up for the Patriots game?
- 41:05Speaker 4: Oh, I don't know.
- 41:06Speaker 9: I don't know. I'm never there for any other game,
- 41:09Speaker 9: so I couldn't tell you.
- 41:10Speaker 5: Yeah, they don't have much to hang their hat on.
- 41:14Speaker 5: Franklin in Baltimore on Brady's comments. The first Brady's comments
- 41:24Speaker 5: speak to the fundamental difference between a traditional pocket quarterback
- 41:28Speaker 5: and the more athletic quarterbacks we have today. Since this
- 41:31Speaker 5: game was based on timing, the best way to play
- 41:33Speaker 5: Brady was typically by disrupting him, whether through a pass
- 41:37Speaker 5: rush or man press coverage. The second, are there any
- 41:40Speaker 5: matchups against the Jags which have you concerned on both
- 41:44Speaker 5: sides of the ball?
- 41:45Speaker 4: We kind of talked about that.
- 41:47Speaker 6: Yeah, just not letting Josh Heinz-Allen get going. I mean,
- 41:49Speaker 6: I think that's probably a good place to start on defense.
- 41:52Speaker 6: He's probably going to be looking to bounce back from
- 41:54Speaker 6: a quiet week last week. But, individual. I think it's
- 41:58Speaker 6: Parker Washington just taking care of him. And I would
- 42:00Speaker 6: just say like the thing, one thing that scares me
- 42:01Speaker 6: a little bit, aside from the run game, it's just
- 42:03Speaker 6: Jacoby Myers popping up with that. Like everybody's covered. And
- 42:06Speaker 6: then he just does what he does and he gets
- 42:08Speaker 6: those conversions. That's, that's his bread and butter.
- 42:10Speaker 3: I mean, it's not a matchup per se, but Trevor Lawrence, like,
- 42:13Speaker 3: I just think he looks like a different guy, you know,
- 42:16Speaker 3: especially about the sec, about the second half of last year,
- 42:19Speaker 3: he looks much more comfortable. It looks like he, you know, we,
- 42:22Speaker 3: we talk all the time about Drake May in the
- 42:24Speaker 3: second year of McDaniel's offense. Well, That's where Lawrence is
- 42:27Speaker 3: in Liam Cohen's offense. And he looks more comfortable. I
- 42:30Speaker 3: know that they had a bad fourth quarter. But we
- 42:34Speaker 3: all remember what it's like to go out to Denver.
- 42:36Speaker 3: They went out there last year and beat Denver. And
- 42:39Speaker 3: they were a quarter away from doing it again. And
- 42:42Speaker 3: they weren't able to finish it off this time. But
- 42:44Speaker 3: it's not like they went out there and folded tent
- 42:46Speaker 3: and had no chance. They had a 13-3 lead in
- 42:49Speaker 3: the second half. They couldn't finish it off. So maybe
- 42:53Speaker 3: he finishes it off this week.
- 42:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:55Speaker 3: Trevor Lawrence would concern me a little bit. Him getting hot.
- 42:58Speaker 9: Lawrence, to me, is like that Mendoza line of quarterbacks.
- 43:03Speaker 10: Good.
- 43:04Speaker 8: He's just good enough that you kind of have to
- 43:06Speaker 8: pay him. He has to be your guy. But is
- 43:09Speaker 8: he really good enough to win you a Super Bowl
- 43:12Speaker 8: or be that kind of player? I think we're five
- 43:16Speaker 8: years into his career. I think we're here. I said
- 43:21Speaker 8: it yesterday. That's my biggest fear with Drake Maye. Where
- 43:24Speaker 8: you get into a point where he's Justin Herbert, Trevor Lawrence,
- 43:27Speaker 8: where like he's clearly good and you have to pay him.
- 43:30Speaker 8: But is he like really a franchise quarterback? Is he
- 43:33Speaker 8: a starter?
- 43:34Speaker 9: Is he an ace?
- 43:34Speaker 7: Right.
- 43:35Speaker 9: Like that sort of thing.
- 43:36Speaker 8: And Trevor Lawrence to me is like right on that
- 43:39Speaker 8: Mendoza line of what is what is he? Is he
- 43:41Speaker 8: good enough to win a Super Bowl?
- 43:43Speaker 5: You might remember what was the scenario that I. offended
- 43:46Speaker 5: all of Patriots Nation by with Trevor Lawrence. You said
- 43:48Speaker 5: that you would take him over Mac Jones.
- 43:53Speaker 4: How could you say that?
- 43:54Speaker 8: You said you would take him over Mac Jones after
- 43:56Speaker 8: their rookie years where Trevor Lawrence stunk and Mac Jones
- 43:59Speaker 8: was decent.
- 44:00Speaker 5: That's what it was.
- 44:02Speaker 3: You were right that day and you're right today.
- 44:04Speaker 8: I think everybody with a sane mind would side with you.
- 44:07Speaker 9: On that one.
- 44:09Speaker 4: Back then they didn't.
- 44:10Speaker 9: I said sane mind.
- 44:13Speaker 4: You mean insane?
- 44:15Speaker 9: You had a saying.
- 44:16Speaker 4: I'm only kidding. I'm making fun of myself.
- 44:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:19Speaker 6: Okay.
- 44:21Speaker 3: I stood by your thought process that day. I wasn't
- 44:23Speaker 3: one of the ones I made fun of.
- 44:24Speaker 4: People thought I committed Patriots blasphemy.
- 44:26Speaker 3: Because he had a, you know, a sketchy rookie year,
- 44:29Speaker 3: and he didn't look like, you know, he was going
- 44:31Speaker 3: to fulfill any of the promises.
- 44:32Speaker 4: But more than that.
- 44:33Speaker 3: But you can actually watch and see skills.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Right.
- 44:36Speaker 5: It was less about Matt Jones as it was my– Hopes,
- 44:41Speaker 5: not hopes, but belief that Trevor Lawrence was going to
- 44:43Speaker 5: be one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Right.
- 44:46Speaker 6: Well, other than Caleb Williams, I mean, was he kind
- 44:47Speaker 6: of the last one that was just kind of consensus?
- 44:50Speaker 6: I mean, yeah, you know, that was I mean, he.
- 44:52Speaker 5: Was he was probably like in clubs and he was
- 44:55Speaker 5: the guy.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:57Speaker 9: I mean, he was an underclassman.
- 44:59Speaker 8: He won the national championship as an underclassman before he
- 45:02Speaker 8: was declared for the NFL draft. And at that point,
- 45:05Speaker 8: everybody was really comparing him to Andrew Luck and saying
- 45:08Speaker 8: that he was like an absolute sure thing.
- 45:11Speaker 9: And he has been.
- 45:14Speaker 5: Good, but not great. He hasn't lived up to it.
- 45:17Speaker 8: How much of that is Jacksonville versus him is a
- 45:20Speaker 8: fair point.
- 45:20Speaker 4: That's what I said earlier.
- 45:22Speaker 3: My timeline might be off, but that rookie year was
- 45:25Speaker 3: that mess with Urban Meyer, right?
- 45:26Speaker 9: It was, correct.
- 45:27Speaker 8: The Patriots hung a 50-burger on him.
- 45:30Speaker 4: Like I said, it was the beginning of the show.
- 45:32Speaker 6: It was probably after that game where the Patriots beat
- 45:34Speaker 6: him like 50 to whatever it was.
- 45:37Speaker 9: But Urban Meyer had been fired.
- 45:39Speaker 4: Back then, I said I'd still take Trevor Lawrence.
- 45:41Speaker 3: It's like I said on the post-game show. If Drake
- 45:44Speaker 3: May struggles through the entire year this year, he's going
- 45:49Speaker 3: to be up for a contract extension. I'd still pay him. Yeah.
- 45:52Speaker 3: Some people wouldn't. But I see the talent and I
- 45:55Speaker 3: am confident in the talent. I believe in him. Now,
- 45:59Speaker 3: some people, you know, some people might look at that
- 46:01Speaker 3: and be spooked. I'm not paying him that. Then you're
- 46:04Speaker 3: back in the lottery, and you've got to figure out
- 46:06Speaker 3: where you're going.
- 46:07Speaker 6: Well, how many quarterbacks wouldn't spook you to give a
- 46:09Speaker 6: second deal to over the last five, ten years? I mean, Mahomes, obviously, like,
- 46:12Speaker 6: he's already been there and won Super Bowls.
- 46:14Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a lot of guys who got the second
- 46:16Speaker 3: contract that were not no-brainers that I would have, you know,
- 46:19Speaker 3: like Herbert. I would have absolutely given Herbert the second contract.
- 46:22Speaker 4: Yeah, right.
- 46:22Speaker 6: But even like the bros of the world, like who
- 46:24Speaker 6: I would have done too, but.
- 46:25Speaker 3: But a lot of people, you don't think a lot
- 46:27Speaker 3: of people would argue with you on that?
- 46:29Speaker 8: No, I think the biggest note, like one, I would
- 46:31Speaker 8: comes to mind is Tua. Like it was Tua.
- 46:34Speaker 3: I would have been more willing to give it to
- 46:35Speaker 3: Herbert than Tua, but I would have given it to
- 46:37Speaker 3: Tua as well.
- 46:38Speaker 8: I think with Tua it was more injury related than,
- 46:40Speaker 8: than maybe just play. But when Tua played in Miami,
- 46:44Speaker 8: he was good, but he didn't play a lot.
- 46:47Speaker 6: It's just, I think my point is just, other than Mahomes,
- 46:49Speaker 6: who already proved that he could win a Super Bowl before.
- 46:51Speaker 4: You know.
- 46:51Speaker 12: Mahomes, Allen.
- 46:52Speaker 3: Otherwise, there's always a question. Lamar Jackson, those guys were no-brainers.
- 46:57Speaker 3: But to your point, most of them, you need a
- 47:00Speaker 3: brain to figure it out. They're not no-brainers.
- 47:02Speaker 14: Right, right, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 47:03Speaker 4: No, exactly, exactly.
- 47:04Speaker 3: You know, most of them are Jalen Hurts and. Justin
- 47:07Speaker 3: Herbert and Tua.
- 47:08Speaker 6: But it's okay. There are only so many starting quarterbacks
- 47:11Speaker 6: in the league. It's okay to be like, we've got
- 47:13Speaker 6: to give this guy a big contract, but we have
- 47:15Speaker 6: some questions.
- 47:15Speaker 9: It's just like, what's the alternative?
- 47:17Speaker 8: That's what I think Christian called in yesterday, and I
- 47:19Speaker 8: kept on saying, what's the alternative? Because Drake May is
- 47:23Speaker 8: too good for you to be picking in the top
- 47:25Speaker 8: five again. So, like, you're never going to get that
- 47:27Speaker 8: high of a draft pick to, like, go and get
- 47:29Speaker 8: one of those types of prospects in the draft. Are you, like,
- 47:32Speaker 8: going reclamation project? Are you trading for a quarterback? Like,
- 47:36Speaker 8: what's your plan B if you aren't confident enough in
- 47:39Speaker 8: Drake May to give him the contract?
- 47:41Speaker 5: And plan B scares the crap out of him.
- 47:43Speaker 9: That scares me more than paying him.
- 47:45Speaker 4: Well, it's purgatory.
- 47:46Speaker 3: But if you pay him, like, I would say there
- 47:50Speaker 3: are two glaring examples of paying the guy and having
- 47:53Speaker 3: it be an epic failure. Like, Daniel Jones got paid,
- 47:56Speaker 3: and that was fine. Like, the Giants moved on from him.
- 48:01Speaker 3: The two guys that are really is Tua and Russell
- 48:06Speaker 3: Wilson in Denver. It didn't do a damn thing to
- 48:10Speaker 3: Denver's long-term outlook. They immediately went to the playoffs by
- 48:14Speaker 3: getting the sixth quarterback in Bo Nix.
- 48:18Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 48:19Speaker 3: Sixth quarterback drafted that year.
- 48:20Speaker 9: And a great class.
- 48:21Speaker 3: Right?
- 48:23Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 48:23Speaker 3: So they were able to move past this $ 100 million
- 48:27Speaker 3: dead cap charge that's supposedly going to suffocate you. Miami's
- 48:31Speaker 3: doing it in a little bit of a different way.
- 48:33Speaker 3: They went out and got a bridge guy who they
- 48:34Speaker 3: think might be something in Malik Willis, and they've otherwise
- 48:39Speaker 3: stripped it to the bone to accommodate that dead cap
- 48:42Speaker 3: charge for Tua. We'll see how that works. Like in
- 48:45Speaker 3: two years, if they're like a playoff team or a
- 48:47Speaker 3: playoff caliber team, I'd say they were unaffected by having
- 48:50Speaker 3: to do that as well. And I know this is
- 48:53Speaker 3: a big statement and it's not my money, but it's
- 48:56Speaker 3: just money. If you decide not to pay the guy,
- 49:01Speaker 3: you're going to have to find somebody else now and
- 49:06Speaker 3: you're going to have to pay the money eventually. So
- 49:09Speaker 3: I would rather roll the dice on these guys like
- 49:11Speaker 3: Daniel Jones with the Giants. He went into Minnesota that
- 49:15Speaker 3: year before and won a playoff game and was really
- 49:17Speaker 3: effective in that game. Daniel Jones. is kind of like
- 49:20Speaker 3: Tua like when he played for the Giants he was
- 49:23Speaker 3: pretty good Wasn't great.
- 49:25Speaker 5: He was like, what do you call it?
- 49:26Speaker 3: That Mendoza line?
- 49:27Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 49:28Speaker 3: He's kind of mid.
- 49:30Speaker 9: We used to call it the Dalton line. Andy Dalton
- 49:32Speaker 9: was always like.
- 49:33Speaker 6: That's perfect.
- 49:34Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 49:35Speaker 8: And now I've replaced it with Trevor Lawrence, where I
- 49:37Speaker 8: feel like you are just.
- 49:38Speaker 9: Good enough that I can't quit you.
- 49:40Speaker 3: I absolutely can do better than Daniel Jones.
- 49:43Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 49:43Speaker 3: I know I can do better.
- 49:44Speaker 9: I don't know if he's on which side of the
- 49:46Speaker 9: line he's on.
- 49:47Speaker 3: I know I can do better than Daniel Jones, but.
- 49:51Speaker 3: Is Jackson Dart better than Daniel Jones?
- 49:53Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 49:54Speaker 3: And then he can't stay on the field to find out.
- 49:59Speaker 6: What if.
- 50:01Speaker 3: And I read something today on MMQB. I didn't read
- 50:04Speaker 3: the whole thing. I just saw what the premise of
- 50:07Speaker 3: the story was. I think Connor Orr wrote it. Jaden
- 50:11Speaker 3: Daniels and.
- 50:14Speaker 3: Jackson Dart, their injuries could impact those teams possibly being
- 50:18Speaker 3: in the quarterback because it's supposed to be a deep
- 50:20Speaker 3: quarterback class again, which, you know, that happens. Do those
- 50:25Speaker 3: teams now have to look at quarterbacks? Could that change
- 50:28Speaker 3: the complexion of the draft next year? Because if Jaden
- 50:30Speaker 3: Daniels has to miss significant time, it looks like Jackson
- 50:34Speaker 3: Dart might miss the whole year now.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:36Speaker 3: Of those teams in the quarterback market again, that's where
- 50:39Speaker 3: you don't want to be. You don't ever want to, quote-unquote,
- 50:43Speaker 3: have to take a quarterback.
- 50:44Speaker 5: Because now your hands are forced on drafting. You lose flexibility.
- 50:48Speaker 3: Long way of saying I would give Drake May the contract,
- 50:51Speaker 3: even if it's not up to what you think it
- 50:53Speaker 3: should be all year.
- 50:54Speaker 8: I mean, they also really lucked out needing the quarterback
- 50:57Speaker 8: in the year that they needed the quarterback in. Paul
- 51:00Speaker 8: mentioned that Bo Nix was the sixth quarterback drafted. That class,
- 51:03Speaker 8: and Jaden Daniels has got to stay healthy, but it's
- 51:06Speaker 8: going to be Caleb, Jaden Daniels, Drake May, Bo Nix.
- 51:09Speaker 8: That is quite the class for quarterbacks.
- 51:13Speaker 9: This year, we'll see.
- 51:14Speaker 8: I know Arch Manning, the kid from Oregon, they're pretty good.
- 51:17Speaker 8: I don't know beyond that if it's as deep as
- 51:20Speaker 8: the class was a couple of years ago.
- 51:21Speaker 4: All right, we'll take a break. Phones are stacked up,
- 51:24Speaker 4: so if you're on.
- 51:25Speaker 7: Hold.
- 51:26Speaker 4: Hang on.
- 51:27Speaker 5: We'll get to that after the break. But and I
- 51:28Speaker 5: also want to tease maybe a debate we'll have if
- 51:31Speaker 5: we have time. It was something that came up pregame
- 51:35Speaker 5: that we were talking about. And the question is, and
- 51:37Speaker 5: I'll give you time to think about it. Is it
- 51:39Speaker 5: OK for a sports fan to say that his favorite
- 51:42Speaker 5: player or her favorite player.
- 51:44Speaker 4: Is someone that they didn't actually watch live?
- 51:48Speaker 9: Like before they were born.
- 51:49Speaker 5: And this came about because Red Sox fans were being
- 51:52Speaker 5: asked outside of Fenway, who was your favorite Red Sox player?
- 51:55Speaker 5: And a lot of people who obviously never saw Ted
- 51:57Speaker 5: Williams play said Ted Williams. I think it's okay. A
- 52:01Speaker 5: lot of other people don't. So that's the question. Is
- 52:04Speaker 5: it okay that your favorite player on a team or
- 52:06Speaker 5: a sport is someone you didn't actually watch with your
- 52:09Speaker 5: own eyes while the player was playing?
- 52:12Speaker 4: So we'll talk about that second half.
- 52:13Speaker 7: All right.

- 54:55Speaker 20: but number one in our hearts, at least for today,
- 54:57Speaker 20: the great... And I'm not– we overuse the word great
- 55:01Speaker 20: a lot of times.
- 55:02Speaker 7: We're not overusing the word here.
- 55:03Speaker 1: We're overusing it today.
- 55:04Speaker 6: That is Irving Fryer.
- 55:06Speaker 20: Irving, thank you so much for joining us.
- 55:08Speaker 1: Really appreciate it.
- 55:09Speaker 21: Matt, it's my pleasure. I don't get a chance to
- 55:11Speaker 21: come back. This way too often, but I'm here to
- 55:15Speaker 21: watch the game today. I'm here to cheer the Patriots on.
- 55:19Speaker 21: I'm also getting a chance to see my son and
- 55:20Speaker 21: my grandchildren because they're up here in Boston.
- 55:22Speaker 3: That's great.
- 55:23Speaker 4: Is that the impetus for coming back here?
- 55:26Speaker 1: I just came back just to be on the show.
- 55:30Speaker 4: What was your impetus?
- 55:31Speaker 20: Because it's great when some of the people, like there's
- 55:33Speaker 20: a lot of people living in this area, and understandably so,
- 55:35Speaker 20: I think the franchise started in 2001.
- 55:38Speaker 1: And that's not the case.
- 55:40Speaker 20: You know, so when somebody like you comes back here,
- 55:42Speaker 20: you're literally franchise royalty.
- 55:44Speaker 1: What was the impetus to come back here?
- 55:45Speaker 21: Well, the impetus to come back was an email that
- 55:47Speaker 21: I received from the Patriots organization inviting some of the alumni.
- 55:52Speaker 4: Awesome.
- 55:53Speaker 21: They put together an opportunity, a program or an event,
- 55:56Speaker 21: I guess you could call either one of those for
- 55:59Speaker 21: us to come back and have a space for us
- 56:00Speaker 21: where we can bring a couple of guests together. And
- 56:03Speaker 21: I'm still good friends with Tony Collins. We stay in
- 56:06Speaker 21: contact with one another. He came several weeks ago. And
- 56:08Speaker 21: I think he brought like 19 cats with him. And
- 56:11Speaker 21: they all had Tony Collins jerseys on. And I saw that.
- 56:13Speaker 7: He posted it.
- 56:14Speaker 21: I saw it. I called him. And he told me
- 56:16Speaker 21: about it. So I responded to the email. Got in
- 56:19Speaker 21: touch with Jeff. Talked with Kate.
- 56:22Speaker 1: And here I am. That's great. That's great.
- 56:24Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 56:25Speaker 2: So.
- 56:26Speaker 3: First of all, what are you up to now before
- 56:28Speaker 3: we get into memory lane? You know, what have you been–
- 56:31Speaker 3: I mean, you look like you could still play. Matt
- 56:33Speaker 3: and I were joking with you before we started.
- 56:34Speaker 1: Ten snaps for sure.
- 56:35Speaker 3: You look like you could get out and jump in
- 56:37Speaker 3: the X spot right now and run ten go routes,
- 56:40Speaker 3: no problem.
- 56:41Speaker 6: What are you up to?
- 56:42Speaker 21: I still do work out, and I work hard. So
- 56:46Speaker 21: I'm working hard. Listen, I had some surgery a little
- 56:48Speaker 21: while ago.
- 56:49Speaker 1: I had a stone in my bladder. And, yeah, that
- 56:54Speaker 1: was a bad experience.
- 56:56Speaker 21: So I'm doing the best that I can to stay
- 56:58Speaker 21: as healthy as I can, and part of that is
- 57:00Speaker 21: working out. But what I'm doing now, I've been doing
- 57:03Speaker 21: the past, what, 25 years now almost, and I'm still pastoring.
- 57:07Speaker 6: That's great.
- 57:08Speaker 21: I'm actually pastoring at two different churches now, but I'm
- 57:11Speaker 21: still doing that. I can't get away from it. I
- 57:14Speaker 21: can't run from it. I tried several times, trust me, and–
- 57:18Speaker 21: It is what it is. It's a calling that you
- 57:21Speaker 21: become a prisoner to, as the Apostle Paul says in Scripture,
- 57:24Speaker 21: and you can't get away from it. So I'm enjoying it.
- 57:27Speaker 21: I love loving people. And we need love more than
- 57:32Speaker 21: anything in today's world. You know it better than I do.
- 57:36Speaker 21: So I do podcasts. I do some analysis with the
- 57:41Speaker 21: Eagles down in Philadelphia. But most of my work, most
- 57:45Speaker 21: of my attention, most of my focus is is with
- 57:47Speaker 21: the church and winning souls.
- 57:48Speaker 6: That's great.
- 57:50Speaker 20: So let's go down memory lane, Irving, and I don't
- 57:52Speaker 20: think a lot of younger people would remember.
- 57:55Speaker 1: You're in a fraternity that's pretty select.
- 57:58Speaker 3: Very select.
- 57:59Speaker 20: There aren't many wide receivers that were selected number one
- 58:03Speaker 20: overall in the draft. I know Keyshawn's one of them,
- 58:05Speaker 20: because I can remember that.
- 58:07Speaker 1: That was after me.
- 58:08Speaker 20: And there's another gentleman whose name I can't remember, I
- 58:10Speaker 20: think from the 60s.
- 58:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 58:11Speaker 1: You're the number one pick in the NFL. What was
- 58:14Speaker 1: that like for you?
- 58:15Speaker 20: For a kid coming out of Nebraska, from South Jersey,
- 58:18Speaker 20: what was that like at the time to be the
- 58:20Speaker 20: number one pick overall?
- 58:21Speaker 21: Well, it wasn't the pomp and circumstance that you have
- 58:23Speaker 21: now with all of the celebration. They sell tickets to
- 58:29Speaker 21: the draft now, and there's thousands of people that show
- 58:31Speaker 21: up in whatever city they're having to draft.
- 58:33Speaker 1: It wasn't like that.
- 58:35Speaker 21: When I was drafted, I actually signed my contract before
- 58:37Speaker 21: the draft, and probably by the time the draft came,
- 58:40Speaker 21: I had spent like $ 25, 000. But the day of the draft,
- 58:44Speaker 21: they sent a car down to New Jersey, picked myself
- 58:46Speaker 21: and my mother up. We went to the draft. They
- 58:50Speaker 21: announced it. We did an interview. We got back in
- 58:52Speaker 21: the car and went back home. That was as exciting
- 58:56Speaker 21: as it was.
- 58:56Speaker 1: That's unbelievable.
- 58:57Speaker 21: But there's something interesting that I kind of just realized
- 59:00Speaker 21: maybe several months ago. I was doing an interview and
- 59:03Speaker 21: began to talk about it and thinking about being drafted
- 59:06Speaker 21: as the number one pick, but I was drafted as
- 59:09Speaker 21: a wide receiver.
- 59:10Speaker 1: I was a wingback in college.
- 59:13Speaker 21: So as a wingback in college, my one-on-ones in practice
- 59:17Speaker 21: were in a three-point stance, blocking down on defensive ends
- 59:21Speaker 21: or blocking linebackers. My one-on-ones in practice never at Nebraska
- 59:27Speaker 21: were me standing up or even split out running routes
- 59:30Speaker 21: against the defensive back. So the first time I had
- 59:34Speaker 21: ever run a route against a defensive back standing up
- 59:37Speaker 21: was my first day in training camp.
- 59:39Speaker 1: I had never done that before.
- 59:42Speaker 21: And, man, I got my behind whooped quite a few
- 59:44Speaker 21: times because Raymond Claiborne and Ronnie LaPette, those guys did
- 59:49Speaker 21: not play. They were great cornerbacks, and I had to
- 59:52Speaker 21: face them every day. So it was a learning curve
- 59:54Speaker 21: for me that was pretty long. It took me a minute.
- 59:57Speaker 21: to get my feet up underneath me to learn how
- 1:00:00Speaker 21: to be a wide receiver. And we didn't throw the
- 1:00:02Speaker 21: ball that much. And I really didn't become, I feel,
- 1:00:06Speaker 21: a good receiver until I went to Miami.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Where they focused on throwing the ball.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: So what was your experience like? You mentioned the guys
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: on the defensive side, but you had a pretty good
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: wide receiver. On the other side, Stanley Morgan.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: Stanley Morgan, yes.
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: So what was it like sort of trying to pick
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: his brain a little bit?
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Well, here's the story behind Stanley. So, yes, I come in.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: I'm a wingback.
- 1:00:26Speaker 21: I don't have a clue as to what I'm doing
- 1:00:29Speaker 21: at the wide receiver position. So I know Stanley's here.
- 1:00:32Speaker 21: I've heard of Stanley. I've actually watched him several times
- 1:00:35Speaker 21: in games. And so I'm figuring I'm going to get
- 1:00:38Speaker 21: some tutelage from him and he's going to help me out. Well,
- 1:00:41Speaker 21: when I got drafted, Ron Myers was the head coach.
- 1:00:43Speaker 11: Yep.
- 1:00:44Speaker 21: Ron Myers was falling out with Stanley Morgan. They both
- 1:00:47Speaker 21: were having a falling out. I think Ron was trying
- 1:00:49Speaker 21: to get rid of Stanley. So when I came in,
- 1:00:51Speaker 21: Ron put me at the same position as Stanley. So
- 1:00:54Speaker 21: I was a threat to Stanley. He and Ron were
- 1:00:58Speaker 21: going at it. I'm on the same side. So Stanley
- 1:01:00Speaker 21: didn't talk to me. He didn't say a word to me.
- 1:01:03Speaker 21: Halfway through my rookie year, Ron Myers gets fired. Raymond
- 1:01:07Speaker 21: Berry comes in.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: Raymond Berry takes me and he puts me on the
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: other side of Stanley.
- 1:01:11Speaker 21: So now Stanley and I are playing at the same
- 1:01:13Speaker 21: time rather than me playing and Stanley on the side
- 1:01:16Speaker 21: or Stanley playing and me on the sideline. But the
- 1:01:19Speaker 21: damage had already been done. So Stanley still wasn't.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: Talking to me. So my whole rookie year, and I
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: don't blame him, but my whole rookie.
- 1:01:25Speaker 21: Year, Stanley didn't say a word to me. Not one
- 1:01:29Speaker 21: single word because I was a threat to him.
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: Matt, we're not even 10 minutes in and you're sort
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: of finding out why the Patriots struggled so much.
- 1:01:36Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: I saw one coach after him. From Ron Myers to
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: Raymond Berry to Rod Russ to Dick McPherson. It was
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: one right after the other.
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: So how did that ice.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: Did that ice ever get broken, Irving?
- 1:01:49Speaker 7: It did get broken.
- 1:01:51Speaker 21: Probably more so the latter part of my second season.
- 1:01:55Speaker 21: We had that big run and we went to the
- 1:01:56Speaker 21: Super Bowl and lost the Super Bowl. So that year, yeah,
- 1:01:59Speaker 21: things kind of came together for us. But it was, again...
- 1:02:02Speaker 21: most of the damage that I was doing was on
- 1:02:04Speaker 21: special teams.
- 1:02:05Speaker 14: Sure.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Pump returner.
- 1:02:06Speaker 10: Sure.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: Yes, I did catch a few passes, but Stanley was
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: the go-to guy.
- 1:02:09Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:02:09Speaker 21: So most of my learning came from just watching Stanley.
- 1:02:13Speaker 21: We really never did sit down and him instruct me
- 1:02:17Speaker 21: or teach me or help me in that manner. Most
- 1:02:20Speaker 21: of it came from me just watching him and learning
- 1:02:22Speaker 21: that way, going out and trying to do it.
- 1:02:26Speaker 6: Myself.
- 1:02:28Speaker 7: And now, great moments in.
- 1:02:32Speaker 7: History.
- 1:02:33Speaker 14: Am I allowed to call out other PU listeners slash callers?
- 1:02:35Speaker 14: If so, I would like to call out Todd in
- 1:02:37Speaker 14: North Carolina for being a fraud.
- 1:02:39Speaker 5: Whoa.
- 1:02:40Speaker 14: A week or two ago, you called him out for
- 1:02:42Speaker 14: all the background noise. When he called into the show,
- 1:02:44Speaker 14: he claimed he didn't know why there was so much
- 1:02:46Speaker 14: noise and he might've been doing dishes or something.
- 1:02:48Speaker 6: I have a hard time believing this story. Why would
- 1:02:50Speaker 6: he know?
- 1:02:51Speaker 14: Well, why would he not know what he was doing
- 1:02:53Speaker 14: when he called in the show?
- 1:02:55Speaker 6: It seems like something to remember. Love you, Todd. Just
- 1:02:58Speaker 6: having fun.
- 1:02:59Speaker 14: Uh, And then he calls us out for our background noise.
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: Let's go to Todd in North Carolina.
- 1:03:06Speaker 6: Todd, if you called it.
- 1:03:10Speaker 5: Perfect.
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: If you did that on purpose. Checkmate.
- 1:03:12Speaker 7: That was good.
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: Well done, my friend. No, I don't think you did
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: it on purpose.
- 1:03:17Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: That's another great moment from Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:03:23Speaker 5: Back here on Patriots Unfiltered. 855-PASS-500 is the hotline. Podcasts
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: at Patriots.com is the email address. Joe writes in, Paul,
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: when you're doing the bit with Fred about the home
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: team getting three, what exactly are you contending?
- 1:03:38Speaker 6: Home field isn't an advantage.
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: Or it's not worth three or it's not possible to
- 1:03:43Speaker 5: assign a number value. I always get pretty annoyed by
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: this bit because I don't really understand it, so I
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: was wondering if you could help me out. That's really funny.
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: So the bit is kind of that If you talk
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: to people that, and I am not one of these guys.
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: I am not a sharp, as Fred likes to call
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: the betting community. I am not one of these people,
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: so I do not know what the value is. But
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: if you talk to those people, they'll tell you they
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: no longer just assign three points to the home team.
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: That's not a thing when they make the line.
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: It's two.
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: I don't know, and I think it's different. Based on
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: the venue, based on the opponents, but, you know, I
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: think it changes. It's not just the home team gets three.
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: That's not the way they do it anymore. That's not
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: where you start from. According to those who know. I
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: am not one of those who know because I am
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: not allowed to do that.
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:04:36Speaker 9: I believe that there's more.
- 1:04:40Speaker 8: of an algorithm to it nowadays than there was when, uh,
- 1:04:43Speaker 8: what's the guy with the nose that you always refer
- 1:04:45Speaker 8: to that, you know, the bookies and stuff like that.
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: Joey, the nose. Yeah.
- 1:04:49Speaker 8: So I think that's not really a person now that, uh, yeah,
- 1:04:53Speaker 8: it's like Rocky, you know.
- 1:04:54Speaker 5: It's not really a person.
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: Symbolizes a lot of people.
- 1:04:58Speaker 9: I think that.
- 1:04:59Speaker 8: They have a little bit more of like a science
- 1:05:02Speaker 8: to it now that bakes into these things. Is this
- 1:05:05Speaker 8: a real home field advantage? Is this kind of a
- 1:05:07Speaker 8: crappy home field advantage?
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: The Patriots last year dispelled all those home field advantage myths, right?
- 1:05:13Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: Road Warriors.
- 1:05:16Speaker 6: That's a whole different thing.
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: The point is.
- 1:05:19Speaker 6: We all we got. Right.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: So that's a perfect example. So the games that they
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: were winning on the road last year, like some of them,
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: not all of them, like they, they won in Buffalo, uh, in,
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: in Baltimore. So there wasn't like this across the board,
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: but do you think that they went into the line
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: and then just gave the Titans three points of an
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: edge because they were at home against the Patriots? No,
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: like they didn't get any edge. The Patriots are favored.
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: In the game, but they would have been more at home.
- 1:05:45Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: No.
- 1:05:46Speaker 6: On the road.
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: No, at home, they would have been a bigger favorite.
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: No, but the other team got to.
- 1:05:51Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: But now you're just annoying the guy.
- 1:05:55Speaker 4: That's my favorite thing to do.
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: The guy, I think, is legitimately asking, and he's overly annoying.
- 1:06:00Speaker 6: I love when Fred starts just getting you lost in
- 1:06:01Speaker 6: the details, and then I just agree with Fred. I'm like, yeah, yeah, no,
- 1:06:04Speaker 6: Fred's right.
- 1:06:04Speaker 5: And then I answer.
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: You're like, more and more in the corner. And then
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: I answer, and you go, yeah, yeah, yeah, you're right.
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:06:11Speaker 5: All right, let's get to the phones. People have been
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: waiting patiently. We'll go to Joey in California.
- 1:06:17Speaker 4: What's up, Joey?
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: Maybe that's Joey that knows.
- 1:06:20Speaker 6: Joey.
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: Joey California.
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: I thought he was waiting patiently, but I guess not
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: so much.
- 1:06:26Speaker 9: You can skip over that one.
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: Chris with a T-I-A-N. What's up, Christian?
- 1:06:34Speaker 7: Christian.
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: Uh-oh.
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: Oh, boy.
- 1:06:36Speaker 5: You got trouble. Yeah, people on their lunch breaks. Todd
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: in North Carolina. What's up, Todd?
- 1:06:43Speaker 15: Hey, I'm here, guys.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: So I'm going to answer your question about whether you
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: should cheer for somebody you haven't really seen. I watch
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: a lot of MMA and boxing, and I still, Muhammad
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: Ali is my favorite boxer.
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: There you go.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: Something about his fights that you just can't see replicated
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: anywhere else. And he's just smooth. Now, to get back
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: onto football, I was listening to Canty before I got
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: to listen to you guys, which I prefer. And he
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: mentioned that he feels that New England is definitely a
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: playoff team because of their defense. And then he mentioned
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: something that was really interesting. He said he believes in
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: Vrabel's relationship with May. Not McDaniels, but Vrabels. And I
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: don't know how he's differentiating between the two. Like, what
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: is the relationship? We don't see it.
- 1:07:27Speaker 12: Like, it's always highlighted.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: You can see McDaniels talking to me, but you don't
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: see too much of Vrabels doing it. So what is
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: that relationship? And like, Canty, do you believe that we
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: have a top five defense? And that's everything for me.
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:07:41Speaker 8: I would say, and this is just observational, but like Vrabels,
- 1:07:46Speaker 8: like big picture. Like, Vrabel's talking to May about leadership
- 1:07:50Speaker 8: and situations and, like, you know, this is what the
- 1:07:53Speaker 8: game needs right now and this is what the situation
- 1:07:56Speaker 8: in the game is. McDaniels is calling plays. Like, McDaniels
- 1:07:59Speaker 8: is talking, you know, X's and O's with Drake May.
- 1:08:02Speaker 8: I think Vrabel is trying to take it, like, he
- 1:08:04Speaker 8: says all the time, like, I'm not going to, like...
- 1:08:06Speaker 8: correct him on his footwork.
- 1:08:08Speaker 6: And like all, like I don't ship within the team,
- 1:08:10Speaker 6: how to respond.
- 1:08:11Speaker 5: And yeah, I would agree from afar. That's, that's what I, that, that, that's.
- 1:08:15Speaker 8: What I think the difference is, is like, he's more
- 1:08:17Speaker 8: of like the hand holder of Drake maze of like
- 1:08:19Speaker 8: bringing him along as a young quarterback. Whereas I think
- 1:08:22Speaker 8: McDaniels is bringing him along, but schematically, you know, as
- 1:08:25Speaker 8: the coordinator and the play caller.
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: Um, Alex writes in a long time listener living in Jacksonville,
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: got tickets for the game on Sunday, uh, Wondering if
- 1:08:35Speaker 5: there are any events down here similar to, like, in
- 1:08:39Speaker 5: Nashville or Tampa. I don't see anything on the registry page.
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: I would go to the Facebook Patriots tailgate page. Patriots
- 1:08:49Speaker 5: tailgate on Facebook, Barry Incian's page. And if there is
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: something going on in Jacksonville, it'll be on that page.
- 1:08:56Speaker 5: I haven't heard anything, so if someone's listening and.
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: They do know of something.
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: going on in Jacksonville, call in or write in and
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: we'll get the word out. But I haven't heard anything.
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: Sometimes people will email, hey, we're doing something. Can we
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: get a raffle item or something like that? But I
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: haven't heard of anything yet.
- 1:09:15Speaker 6: No. Look it up.
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: Usually, I thought there was a club down there. Also,
- 1:09:20Speaker 5: what's a good place to eat in Jacksonville?
- 1:09:22Speaker 9: That's a good question.
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, you're going to Jersey Mike's.
- 1:09:25Speaker 9: Well, for Sunday, sure.
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: Does he not go out with you guys?
- 1:09:28Speaker 7: No.
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: He's too good for you?
- 1:09:29Speaker 10: No.
- 1:09:29Speaker 9: No, I mean, I... No, we run in different crowds
- 1:09:33Speaker 9: on the road.
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: That is true.
- 1:09:34Speaker 9: That is true.
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: I kind of got phased out after a while, too,
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: now that I'm thinking back.
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: Oh, here we go.
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: Andy and I would go and get a burger in
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: Buffalo Wings, and Fred would be at some posh restaurant.
- 1:09:44Speaker 6: Yes, correct.
- 1:09:44Speaker 9: They're at the Capitol Grill.
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: Kind of topping it off at a cigar bar late
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: at night with a martini cigar bar.
- 1:09:50Speaker 6: 100%.
- 1:09:51Speaker 5: It's accurate.
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: Scotch.
- 1:09:54Speaker 6: He's just mild.
- 1:09:55Speaker 9: No comment.
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: Because he knows I'm right.
- 1:09:57Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:09:58Speaker 8: Or like finding some dive bar with chicken tenders.
- 1:10:02Speaker 5: Honestly, I don't want to make you kids feel uncomfortable.
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: I appreciate that.
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: I'd be kind of like. Sticking out there.
- 1:10:12Speaker 9: I appreciate that.
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: That's a good call. No one wants to hang with
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: their boss all the time. I think you're right about that.
- 1:10:18Speaker 9: There's times where we all have things together.
- 1:10:21Speaker 6: The Big Elmo's dinner.
- 1:10:23Speaker 8: Yeah, or if it's a holiday and we're on the
- 1:10:25Speaker 8: road for a holiday, they're very nice and take us
- 1:10:28Speaker 8: out for dinner.
- 1:10:29Speaker 9: But I appreciate that.
- 1:10:31Speaker 6: Our friends at Microsoft Copilot recommend The Bearded Pig and
- 1:10:34Speaker 6: The Burrito Gallery.
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: The Bearded Pig... In the burrito gallery.
- 1:10:38Speaker 6: The bearded pig is a southern barbecue.
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: I'm strongly interested in the bearded pig.
- 1:10:42Speaker 9: Yeah, that sounds really good.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: Ten minutes from the stadium.
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: Yeah, barbecues. I haven't had that in a while.
- 1:10:46Speaker 9: Southern barbecue is usually pretty spot on.
- 1:10:48Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: That might be a thing.
- 1:10:51Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:10:51Speaker 5: I know Warren Ladd from the UK hit me up
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: on WhatsApp. And he said he'll be there with a
- 1:10:57Speaker 5: couple people and wanted to get something to eat.
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: So I don't know where to go. Yeah.
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:11:03Speaker 6: Good luck, guys.
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: Fred's got a lot of responsibilities.
- 1:11:07Speaker 6: Are you guys going out tomorrow, you think?
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: Friday. Oh, you mean Friday? I don't know.
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: What time are we leaving on Friday, Mike?
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know. We got it.
- 1:11:18Speaker 5: I think the earlier you're traveling on Saturday, the better.
- 1:11:22Speaker 9: Yeah, I'm a little concerned about that.
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: Well, I'm sure they're monitoring it.
- 1:11:26Speaker 9: Well, yeah, but I just would like me to get in.
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: Homecoming on Saturday. Like for Will, it's his last homecoming.
- 1:11:32Speaker 6: In a hurricane.
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: And it's supposed to be like 50 mile an hour winds.
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: We've got to cancel it, right? At least postpone it
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: for like another weekend.
- 1:11:39Speaker 6: I'm supposed to go to a wedding on the Cape
- 1:11:41Speaker 6: and I don't know what they're going to do.
- 1:11:42Speaker 9: Also a sad story.
- 1:11:43Speaker 5: I know.
- 1:11:44Speaker 6: Not my wedding.
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: It's going to stink for you guys. If you're not
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: able to travel, that's a sad story too.
- 1:11:50Speaker 8: Did you guys, we're going to, I have empathy for others. We, we,
- 1:11:54Speaker 8: we have to like, the team has to go to Jacksonville.
- 1:11:56Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: But you can go a different time.
- 1:11:58Speaker 9: So the question is, is like, are we going at
- 1:12:00Speaker 9: a different time than normal?
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: That's it.
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:12:02Speaker 9: No, I just like to know I get dancing.
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: Stay flexible.
- 1:12:05Speaker 9: I'm always flexible. You know that I'll be there.
- 1:12:08Speaker 6: Well, in that new jumpsuit you got, you're going to
- 1:12:10Speaker 6: be extra flexible.
- 1:12:10Speaker 9: In my new sweatsuit.
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: I will.
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: Uh, Again, I was thinking it, but sometimes, believe it
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: or not, sometimes I don't express every thought that comes
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: into my head.
- 1:12:19Speaker 8: Like Tony Soprano right here.
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: Sabah's in North Carolina. What's up?
- 1:12:27Speaker 6: Hey there, guys.
- 1:12:27Speaker 17: As usual, I just enjoy your show so much. You
- 1:12:30Speaker 17: guys are the best thing on TV.
- 1:12:31Speaker 5: Oh, well, thank you.
- 1:12:32Speaker 6: Thank you kindly.
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: Definitely.
- 1:12:36Speaker 17: Hey, so a couple of things about Drake in the game. This,
- 1:12:40Speaker 17: I think, is a must-win, not because of the way
- 1:12:43Speaker 17: you think I'm thinking. I think it's a must-win because
- 1:12:46Speaker 17: this could be a wild-card spot tiebreaker. So that's why
- 1:12:50Speaker 17: it's a must-win. You've got to beat the guys you're
- 1:12:52Speaker 17: going to be competing with for playoff spots.
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 1:12:57Speaker 6: Yes, thank you.
- 1:12:58Speaker 17: Secondly, I think on... Drake May, as far as signing
- 1:13:01Speaker 17: him a long-term deal, I think he's going to be
- 1:13:03Speaker 17: one of those guys that do like Tom Brady. He's
- 1:13:06Speaker 17: not going to be like in a pissing contest. I'm
- 1:13:08Speaker 17: going to be the highest paid, you know. I think
- 1:13:10Speaker 17: he's going to take a little less in the market
- 1:13:11Speaker 17: value to make sure he has guys around him because
- 1:13:15Speaker 17: I think he's a long-term thinker, and he knows winning
- 1:13:18Speaker 17: is more important than getting, you know, I don't know,
- 1:13:21Speaker 17: $ 10 million when you're already going to get 60.
- 1:13:24Speaker 5: Okay, Sabah, I'm going to stop you right there because
- 1:13:28Speaker 5: you're going– Your assumption is based on Drake May. Drake
- 1:13:33Speaker 5: May has an agent. His agent's one of the most
- 1:13:35Speaker 5: high-powered agents out there.
- 1:13:37Speaker 17: Yeah, but he controls the agent.
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: So I would just ask, what have you observed that
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: leads you to believe that Drake May won't do that,
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: won't look for a big contract?
- 1:13:49Speaker 17: Because of the next thing I'm going to say, which
- 1:13:52Speaker 17: is his confidence issues. He aims to please. I remember
- 1:13:57Speaker 17: Rabel saying at a press conference that, or I don't know,
- 1:14:00Speaker 17: he was on a show, and he said that they
- 1:14:02Speaker 17: actually had to tell Drake, look, you can't like every play.
- 1:14:05Speaker 17: He just doesn't want to hurt people's feelings. You've got
- 1:14:08Speaker 17: to tell us a play you don't like. There's got
- 1:14:10Speaker 17: to be something you don't like. And I found that,
- 1:14:12Speaker 17: and my daughter plays college basketball and stuff, and I
- 1:14:14Speaker 17: found out that athletes who aim to please, particularly their teammates,
- 1:14:20Speaker 17: their coaches, they tend to get a little tight sometimes.
- 1:14:23Speaker 17: when they make a mistake and they lose confidence a
- 1:14:26Speaker 17: little bit sooner than athletes who just don't care. And
- 1:14:30Speaker 17: that could be a plus, but it could also be
- 1:14:31Speaker 17: a negative. And I think that that is one of
- 1:14:34Speaker 17: the reasons why I think he will not demand top,
- 1:14:37Speaker 17: top dollar, because I think he knows that he wants
- 1:14:41Speaker 17: to be surrounded by people that can help him win
- 1:14:44Speaker 17: and not kind of resent him. And if you make 60,
- 1:14:47Speaker 17: that's 70.
- 1:14:48Speaker 5: Same thing.
- 1:14:48Speaker 6: It's infinity.
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: I mean, you could be right, but just like Vrabel
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: is telling him you can't like everybody, his agent's telling me,
- 1:14:55Speaker 5: he's telling him, Yeah, okay.
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: You gotta go for it.
- 1:14:59Speaker 3: So now it's a semantics thing. So he might look
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: for 60 instead of 70. Yeah, that's possible. That doesn't
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: have any impact whatsoever on the team around him. Like,
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: what's the difference?
- 1:15:09Speaker 17: Well, it's $ 10 million extra a year.
- 1:15:12Speaker 5: No, it's not.
- 1:15:13Speaker 7: No, it's not.
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: That's money. I thought you were saying he was going
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: to take a bargain. Brady, early on, could have gotten
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: much bigger contracts. That was also overblown later in his
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: career when he was the highest paid guy in football.
- 1:15:28Speaker 10: He was a late graphic.
- 1:15:30Speaker 17: You can't do that as a top guy.
- 1:15:31Speaker 5: In a number three people brady did do it as
- 1:15:33Speaker 5: a it you know now i i know what you
- 1:15:35Speaker 5: think the lady at that.
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: Yeah i don't think there's anything that i've seen from
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: drake may indicate that he's not interested in a big contract.
- 1:15:42Speaker 17: I mean i didn't think they can't be in the
- 1:15:43Speaker 17: past but he's not going to the gonzalez thing like
- 1:15:46Speaker 17: i have to be number one yeah i'd.
- 1:15:47Speaker 3: Be surprised if he doesn't but.
- 1:15:49Speaker 9: I also think it's all i don't really see it
- 1:15:51Speaker 9: in a lot.
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: Of that we'll see yeah and i i know honestly
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: i don't care because none of that has anything to
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: do with the team around him i'd like to hear
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: if it's sixty sixty five seventy million you're not saving
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: any money on the margins around your thanks to the
- 1:16:03Speaker 3: team so quarterbacks cost a lot of money there are
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: a lot of quarterbacks in the league that make a
- 1:16:08Speaker 3: lot of money that lead teams that are elite you
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: know Patrick Mahomes makes a ton of money Josh Allen
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: makes a ton of money Jalen Hurts makes a ton
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: of money these are teams that have rosters that are
- 1:16:20Speaker 3: as good as anybody else's in football Matthew Stafford makes
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: a ton of money like I don't care if he
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: makes $ 70 million or $ 65 million, whatever. He's not going
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: to take $ 40, which can allow you to save money.
- 1:16:33Speaker 5: Can we all make each other a pledge? And I'm
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: talking to everybody listening, too. And you can say no, Fred.
- 1:16:39Speaker 5: I'm not buying in. But come November, December, when we're
- 1:16:43Speaker 5: in the playoff run and we're getting down there and
- 1:16:46Speaker 5: games are really important, can we all promise that we're
- 1:16:49Speaker 5: not going to be talking about next year and Drake
- 1:16:51Speaker 5: May's contract?
- 1:16:53Speaker 12: Oh, yeah.
- 1:16:53Speaker 9: No, people just like talking about this stuff too much.
- 1:16:56Speaker 6: He played pretty good last night. I think the dollar
- 1:16:58Speaker 6: value just went up.
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: I really agree with Fred.
- 1:17:01Speaker 8: But they just talk about it all. People love talking
- 1:17:04Speaker 8: about it.
- 1:17:05Speaker 9: It bores me to death. I don't know why. It's
- 1:17:07Speaker 9: not going to.
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: Bore me to death after the season's over, but I
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: agree with Fred. Every game isn't a referendum on how
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: much money Drake Mays is going to make next year.
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: It's just not. That's not how it works.
- 1:17:20Speaker 5: I just, again.
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: I'm assuming that he's going to be among the highest-paid
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: quarterbacks in football. That's not going to preclude you from
- 1:17:29Speaker 3: getting players. So please don't listen to NFL owners that
- 1:17:32Speaker 3: tell you, well, Patrick Mahomes makes a lot of money,
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: and that's why we can't sign him.
- 1:17:39Speaker 6: X player.
- 1:17:39Speaker 8: But even if like, you want to have that opinion though,
- 1:17:42Speaker 8: like it does, that is how, like the chiefs have
- 1:17:45Speaker 8: jettisoned a lot of good players because of, because of money.
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: Now, whether that you agree with that or not because
- 1:17:51Speaker 3: of money, but that not the cap, I.
- 1:17:54Speaker 9: Understand, but they do it anyways. So I know.
- 1:17:57Speaker 3: And I'm not going to tell you why I think
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: that that happens. But don't buy that. If I were
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: a Kansas City Chiefs fan, I wouldn't be mad at
- 1:18:04Speaker 3: Patrick Mahomes. I'd be mad at Clark Hunt.
- 1:18:07Speaker 8: Sure, but I'm just saying, regardless, you can hold him
- 1:18:10Speaker 8: accountable if you want to hold him accountable, but what's
- 1:18:12Speaker 8: going to happen is going to happen. The Chiefs paid
- 1:18:15Speaker 8: Patrick Mahomes and then turned around and traded Tyreek Hill.
- 1:18:19Speaker 9: That's business. They're not going to pay everybody.
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: But all I'm saying is.
- 1:18:25Speaker 5: But there's a difference between they don't want to pay
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: everybody and.
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: They can't pay everybody.
- 1:18:29Speaker 3: Thank you. That's perfect.
- 1:18:31Speaker 8: I totally understand that, but, like, I just, I think
- 1:18:34Speaker 8: that it's, like, like, we can hold them accountable and, like,
- 1:18:37Speaker 8: you know, put their feet to the fire about it,
- 1:18:38Speaker 8: but it is what it is.
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: The Rams sign these guys, and then they sign the
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: next guy, and then they go out and trade for
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: another guy.
- 1:18:43Speaker 9: Their owner is willing to do it. Their owners are
- 1:18:46Speaker 9: willing to do it.
- 1:18:48Speaker 3: So don't say that this is why he's going to
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: do it. Because he wants to make sure he has it. No,
- 1:18:55Speaker 3: that's not necessary for him to do that, to get
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: good players around him. What's necessary to get good players
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: around him is a wise front office that makes good moves.
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: I think that the Chiefs have made some bad moves.
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: And that's why their talent has... decreased a little bit
- 1:19:11Speaker 3: over the last say four years they're still really good
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: but I don't think I think Evan's right I think
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: they let some players go because they didn't want to pay.
- 1:19:19Speaker 8: Them certainly their corners I mean all their corners like
- 1:19:22Speaker 8: Trent McDuffie.
- 1:19:23Speaker 9: They also lean they.
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: Lean on specs you know they do and you.
- 1:19:27Speaker 9: Know they're Dante Skarniecki they.
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: Bring in these guys figure it out and they're just
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: like you know they actually got Sneed back yep you know.
- 1:19:36Speaker 8: They're running it exactly how the Patriots ran it pretty
- 1:19:38Speaker 8: much They have some guys like Chris Jones and Travis
- 1:19:41Speaker 8: Kelsey that are their guys that they're keeping around until
- 1:19:44Speaker 8: the end. But for the most part, they trust their coaching.
- 1:19:48Speaker 8: They trust Patrick Mahomes.
- 1:19:50Speaker 5: And again, there's a difference between the cap and the cash.
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: The cap is funny money. The cash is real money.
- 1:19:59Speaker 5: And a lot of these owners have more than others.
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: Let's face it. Stan Kroenke.
- 1:20:05Speaker 6: Just bought another team.
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think he's married.
- 1:20:09Speaker 5: Not only does he have his money, isn't his wife
- 1:20:11Speaker 5: really rich too or something like that? He's got a lot,
- 1:20:14Speaker 5: a lot of money. A lot of liquid money.
- 1:20:17Speaker 4: Not every owner does.
- 1:20:18Speaker 5: So, you know, when you're talking about 50, 60 million and,
- 1:20:23Speaker 5: you know, cash bonus right up front, that's real money
- 1:20:26Speaker 5: out of their pocket. And You know, for some players,
- 1:20:32Speaker 5: I don't want to pay that guy that much money.
- 1:20:34Speaker 5: And so they get rid of him. It's not they
- 1:20:37Speaker 5: could probably do it and they extend it or they
- 1:20:40Speaker 5: leverage something and they take loans or whatever. But he's
- 1:20:43Speaker 5: not worth it.
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:20:44Speaker 6: But just worth it.
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: So if that's the if that's the conclusion drawn by
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: a team, just don't blame that on the quarterback.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: No.
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: That's all I'm saying.
- 1:20:54Speaker 6: He should have taken less. Right.
- 1:20:55Speaker 3: These guys should maximize their power. They do not have
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: forever to earn this kind of money. They should maximize
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: their windows when they do. Now, I'm not going to
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: criticize a guy if he says, I don't need $ 70 million.
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: I can get by. That's total personal preference. But I
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: just would never hold it against a guy who doesn't
- 1:21:16Speaker 3: do that.
- 1:21:16Speaker 8: My only point is, as fans and as yappers, we
- 1:21:20Speaker 8: can sit here and say.
- 1:21:23Speaker 8: They they're cheaping out by, you know, trading these guys
- 1:21:27Speaker 8: because they're paying the quarterback now and this, that, the
- 1:21:29Speaker 8: other thing, but that's just how teams operate. Like a
- 1:21:31Speaker 8: lot of teams, you know, Kansas city is one of them,
- 1:21:33Speaker 8: you know, we'll see what Buffalo like Buffalo.
- 1:21:36Speaker 9: I don't know.
- 1:21:36Speaker 8: You know, I, I don't know if they're going to
- 1:21:39Speaker 8: be big players and free agency and stuff like that.
- 1:21:41Speaker 8: Now that Josh Allen's getting super expensive, like for a
- 1:21:45Speaker 8: lot of these teams, that's just business, you know, and
- 1:21:48Speaker 8: whether we like it or not, that that's the reality of.
- 1:21:51Speaker 6: I'd say on the Chiefs, too, that Kenneth Walker move
- 1:21:54Speaker 6: right now looks like a really good one for them.
- 1:21:56Speaker 6: And that's, you know, one of the first ones that
- 1:21:58Speaker 6: I said, that's a really good move from the homes.
- 1:22:00Speaker 6: And that's a big money contract for a running back.
- 1:22:03Speaker 6: You know, it was like three years, $ 39 million, something
- 1:22:06Speaker 6: like that.
- 1:22:07Speaker 7: I saw something.
- 1:22:07Speaker 6: They got in early, and they paid a little less
- 1:22:09Speaker 6: than maybe they might have.
- 1:22:10Speaker 3: Well, comparatively to Gibbs and Robinson, but he ain't those guys.
- 1:22:15Speaker 3: He shouldn't be getting what those guys get.
- 1:22:17Speaker 6: He's pretty good.
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: He's pretty damn good.
- 1:22:19Speaker 3: No, he's really good, but he's not Jameer Gibbs, and
- 1:22:22Speaker 3: he's not Bijan Robinson. He's not that electric.
- 1:22:25Speaker 6: To me, it just feels like the first move they've
- 1:22:27Speaker 6: made in a while that's really added something.
- 1:22:29Speaker 3: Because what happened finally?
- 1:22:31Speaker 9: They missed the playoffs.
- 1:22:34Speaker 3: When you're able to continue to win and win and win,
- 1:22:36Speaker 3: no matter what you do with the personnel moves, your
- 1:22:38Speaker 3: incentive to continue to spend the money isn't there. Now
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: they bottom out a little bit. They went 6-11.
- 1:22:44Speaker 8: They drafted a corner to replace Trent McDuffie and, you know,
- 1:22:49Speaker 8: Bill Belichick.
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: All right. Christian in L.A., what's up?
- 1:22:55Speaker 15: Hey, you guys.
- 1:22:56Speaker 7: Hey, you guys.
- 1:22:56Speaker 10: Hey, you guys.
- 1:22:57Speaker 22: So quickly, really two statements and a question.
- 1:23:02Speaker 16: On the jersey thing, it's like if you see a
- 1:23:04Speaker 16: little kid wearing a Dan Marino jersey, you know the
- 1:23:07Speaker 16: little kid did not see Dan Marino play. Are you
- 1:23:09Speaker 16: going to give the little kid.
- 1:23:10Speaker 7: A hard time?
- 1:23:11Speaker 4: Not me.
- 1:23:11Speaker 9: I mean, not a little kid. I'm not going to, like,
- 1:23:13Speaker 9: bully a little kid.
- 1:23:14Speaker 5: No, but you will.
- 1:23:15Speaker 4: Have disdain for him and his parents.
- 1:23:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm fine with it. I don't think you should
- 1:23:19Speaker 3: have to have seen the guy play.
- 1:23:20Speaker 8: I just personally think that you have to, like, it
- 1:23:24Speaker 8: means a lot about, like, how that made you feel
- 1:23:26Speaker 8: being in the moment with that team, that player. Like,
- 1:23:30Speaker 8: I would never say that, like... Larry Bird was my
- 1:23:33Speaker 8: favorite Celtic as a diehard Celtic fan because I didn't
- 1:23:36Speaker 8: see him play like I wasn't bored.
- 1:23:38Speaker 4: You can watch clips and you can.
- 1:23:39Speaker 8: Yeah, I've seen him play and highlights plenty of times,
- 1:23:43Speaker 8: but like.
- 1:23:44Speaker 4: Read his book. He's not like about Babe Ruth.
- 1:23:46Speaker 8: He's not as good of a player as Larry Bird.
- 1:23:49Speaker 8: But my favorite Celtic is Paul Pierce because that's my
- 1:23:52Speaker 8: generation's Larry Bird.
- 1:23:54Speaker 9: He's not as good of a player, but that's just
- 1:23:56Speaker 9: the reality.
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:23:59Speaker 16: Football-wise, something that Tom Brady said sort of rang a
- 1:24:04Speaker 16: bell for me because Tom Brady sort of grew with
- 1:24:08Speaker 16: Josh McDaniels. And I think that kind of rang the
- 1:24:11Speaker 16: bell of the difference between what I think of as
- 1:24:14Speaker 16: a good quarterback versus a quarterback who's good. So to me,
- 1:24:18Speaker 16: a quarterback who's good is a guy who can play
- 1:24:20Speaker 16: with his body, who can use his abilities and his
- 1:24:23Speaker 16: talents and succeed and.
- 1:24:25Speaker 22: Excel, like a Josh Allen.
- 1:24:27Speaker 16: A quarterback is a guy like Brady who plays from
- 1:24:30Speaker 16: the neck up.
- 1:24:31Speaker 7: And I think maybe that.
- 1:24:32Speaker 22: Transition, maybe Josh had Drake.
- 1:24:34Speaker 16: Sort of transitioning or trying to transition from a guy
- 1:24:37Speaker 16: who plays with his body and his talent, as Drake
- 1:24:40Speaker 16: did in.
- 1:24:40Speaker 22: College, to trying to make him a good quarterback, which
- 1:24:44Speaker 22: is a franchise leading quarterback that plays from the head up.
- 1:24:47Speaker 22: And that could have Drake sort of stuck in the
- 1:24:49Speaker 22: middle decision-wise. That's one thing I wanted to make. Second
- 1:24:54Speaker 22: statement is I think Travis Hunter could be an X-factor.
- 1:24:57Speaker 22: He hasn't really hit like they've wanted to, but you know,
- 1:25:00Speaker 22: he's got to have a breakout game at some point.
- 1:25:02Speaker 5: That's a good, we haven't even mentioned him.
- 1:25:04Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:25:04Speaker 9: Because it's kind of not a good one.
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: Cause it's not.
- 1:25:07Speaker 9: Going so hot. No, I know.
- 1:25:09Speaker 3: Plus you don't really break out at corner. Like he's
- 1:25:11Speaker 3: a quarterback now.
- 1:25:12Speaker 5: But what if they, what if they have a package.
- 1:25:16Speaker 6: For him on offense?
- 1:25:16Speaker 8: They could, they have, yeah, he played like six plays
- 1:25:19Speaker 8: on offense, but I think the issue that they have
- 1:25:21Speaker 8: with him on offense is that when it's kind of
- 1:25:23Speaker 8: like when the Patriots use Marcus Jones on offense, uh.
- 1:25:26Speaker 9: Everybody knows where the ball's going.
- 1:25:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:25:28Speaker 8: When he goes on the field, it's like, okay, well,
- 1:25:30Speaker 8: this is the Travis Hunter play. And so it's just
- 1:25:33Speaker 8: like the whole defense is like, okay, well, Travis Hunter's
- 1:25:37Speaker 8: on the field. And so like, he's not part of
- 1:25:39Speaker 8: the offense.
- 1:25:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:25:40Speaker 9: So I think that that's the issue.
- 1:25:42Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:25:42Speaker 8: So that's the issue that they're having with him offensively
- 1:25:45Speaker 8: by using him more at corner than at wide receiver
- 1:25:48Speaker 8: is that he's not part of the flow of the offense.
- 1:25:51Speaker 8: So everybody's on high alert when Travis Hunter goes on
- 1:25:53Speaker 8: the field, they.
- 1:25:54Speaker 3: Had made a big thing out of, during the offseason
- 1:25:56Speaker 3: of saying he's a corner now. He's exclusively going to
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: be a corner.
- 1:25:59Speaker 4: And how has he been doing at corner?
- 1:26:01Speaker 8: Well, okay, but they're in this insane rotation. They play
- 1:26:05Speaker 8: four corners, and they are all in different packages. And
- 1:26:08Speaker 8: depending on the package and the situation and all that,
- 1:26:11Speaker 8: they rotate them like hockey lines.
- 1:26:13Speaker 9: It's crazy. I don't really know what's going on with that.
- 1:26:16Speaker 4: Does a corner need to get into a groove?
- 1:26:19Speaker 8: Sort of like a, I don't know, but like, I've just,
- 1:26:21Speaker 8: my whole point is, is like Christian Gonzalez just plays
- 1:26:24Speaker 8: wire to wire every single game. And he's just your
- 1:26:28Speaker 8: outside corner, you know, right outside cornerback for the whole
- 1:26:31Speaker 8: four quarters of every single game. Travis Hunter only played
- 1:26:34Speaker 8: like 30 defensive snaps last week. Like they, they have
- 1:26:37Speaker 8: them in this like hockey line type rotation. And, uh,
- 1:26:41Speaker 8: it's kind of bizarre.
- 1:26:42Speaker 6: That, that to me sounds like maybe go tempo and
- 1:26:45Speaker 6: try to, force them to keep guys on the field
- 1:26:48Speaker 6: and maybe take them a little bit out of what
- 1:26:50Speaker 6: they want to do. We saw a lot of tempo
- 1:26:52Speaker 6: in training camp. They'd make a play, they'd run down
- 1:26:54Speaker 6: the field. I think you might see some of.
- 1:26:56Speaker 7: That this week.
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: Yeah, they got some first downs to do that, though.
- 1:26:59Speaker 6: Well, they got one last week and they didn't know
- 1:27:01Speaker 6: what to do and they got a delayed game. That
- 1:27:03Speaker 6: was surprising.
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: No, that was a huge play. That was the 63-yard play,
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: I think. But I'm talking about using tempo. You can
- 1:27:09Speaker 3: use tempo, but if you don't get first downs, and
- 1:27:12Speaker 3: they've been struggling on third downs.
- 1:27:15Speaker 6: It seemed to me in training camp when they would
- 1:27:16Speaker 6: hit those big plays down the field, that was when
- 1:27:19Speaker 6: they would go quick. And that's kind of what I'm
- 1:27:21Speaker 6: looking for.
- 1:27:22Speaker 5: Kakar writes in, food recommendation, Matthews, either in Town Hall
- 1:27:27Speaker 5: or Midtown. It's the best from that list, and it
- 1:27:30Speaker 5: will also be the closest to downtown. It's the best, Jerry.
- 1:27:34Speaker 4: So Matthews. I have to look up that.
- 1:27:35Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:27:36Speaker 6: Any fond memories, you guys, of when you went to
- 1:27:38Speaker 6: that Super Bowl down in Jacksonville?
- 1:27:39Speaker 4: I literally never left the hotel.
- 1:27:41Speaker 9: I was going to say that.
- 1:27:42Speaker 5: What's the opposite of fond memories?
- 1:27:43Speaker 16: I know.
- 1:27:44Speaker 6: I hear so many war stories about it. They had
- 1:27:46Speaker 6: to put people on a boat.
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: I wasn't there.
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: It was terrible.
- 1:27:50Speaker 6: You picked a good one to get married, I guess.
- 1:27:52Speaker 14: I did.
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: Well, I didn't get married. I had a kid.
- 1:27:54Speaker 7: Oh, sorry.
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: Wrong one.
- 1:27:55Speaker 9: You could have been there.
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: The bane of my existence.
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: Let's see.
- 1:28:02Speaker 5: Joe writes in, my third favorite NBA player is Shaquille O'Neal.
- 1:28:06Speaker 5: I watched him play, but only at the end of
- 1:28:08Speaker 5: his prime. And not only was he not on my
- 1:28:10Speaker 5: favorite team, I didn't even really like him when he played.
- 1:28:13Speaker 5: I've recently, though, through maturing and learning more basketball, come
- 1:28:17Speaker 5: to like and appreciate just how dominant he was.
- 1:28:21Speaker 4: So could he be my favorite player if he was?
- 1:28:24Speaker 5: Sure.
- 1:28:24Speaker 10: Yes.
- 1:28:25Speaker 4: But he watched him play.
- 1:28:26Speaker 9: He literally just said in the email that I did
- 1:28:28Speaker 9: watch him play.
- 1:28:28Speaker 4: But not during his prime.
- 1:28:30Speaker 9: Okay, well, I don't know. When are we cutting it off?
- 1:28:32Speaker 9: His Miami games? His Celtics games? Where are we going?
- 1:28:35Speaker 5: What he's saying by saying that is when he watched them,
- 1:28:38Speaker 5: nothing that he did while he was watching would have
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: made him his player. It's the stuff that he learned afterwards.
- 1:28:43Speaker 9: Okay. All right.
- 1:28:45Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 1:28:46Speaker 9: You're not selling me.
- 1:28:47Speaker 5: There's a strong opinion on this.
- 1:28:49Speaker 9: The job is to have a strong opinion.
- 1:28:51Speaker 5: But your opinion is you can't do it. Of course
- 1:28:54Speaker 5: you can.
- 1:28:55Speaker 8: You can do whatever you want. Thank you. I just
- 1:28:57Speaker 8: disagree with you. I just look down on you a
- 1:28:59Speaker 8: little bit.
- 1:29:02Speaker 6: Have you researched the player? Do you know the player's stats?
- 1:29:05Speaker 9: Why are they your favorite player? I don't know.
- 1:29:08Speaker 8: I'm not saying he's my favorite player, but I've read
- 1:29:11Speaker 8: a lot of books and stuff about Michael Jordan because
- 1:29:13Speaker 8: I'm a big hoops head and Michael Jordan's obviously Michael Jordan.
- 1:29:16Speaker 8: I would never say, though, that I was born in 92.
- 1:29:21Speaker 8: So I was I was an infant when Michael Jordan
- 1:29:23Speaker 8: was at the peak of his powers. I actually saw
- 1:29:26Speaker 8: him as a wizard as a like nine year old
- 1:29:30Speaker 8: at TD Garden.
- 1:29:31Speaker 9: As a wizard.
- 1:29:35Speaker 3: But like, I don't know.
- 1:29:36Speaker 9: Like, I don't I don't think that that really counts.
- 1:29:40Speaker 6: Like your favorite player. I just would like to hear
- 1:29:42Speaker 6: somebody say, I've never seen this player play. But this
- 1:29:45Speaker 6: is why they're my favorite X, Y, Z, like the reasoning.
- 1:29:48Speaker 6: That's right. So why?
- 1:29:49Speaker 4: He's such a mythical figure.
- 1:29:51Speaker 9: Yeah, because no one is old enough to have seen
- 1:29:54Speaker 9: him play.
- 1:29:54Speaker 5: I did read his book written by a famous author.
- 1:30:00Speaker 4: I forget who. It was really– it was excellent.
- 1:30:04Speaker 3: Mark Twain.
- 1:30:04Speaker 4: Yeah, just him as a mythical figure, just like– You know,
- 1:30:09Speaker 4: the aura around him.
- 1:30:10Speaker 6: He was bigger than life.
- 1:30:11Speaker 5: He was bigger than baseball. He was like, you know,
- 1:30:14Speaker 5: a superstar before there were superstars. Can you imagine that
- 1:30:18Speaker 5: type of guy in today's social media world?
- 1:30:21Speaker 4: Oh, my God. He'd be tremendous.
- 1:30:24Speaker 6: Get ready with me with. Babe Ruth. He's eating, like, ham.
- 1:30:27Speaker 8: That's a hot take that I'm not going to go to.
- 1:30:30Speaker 6: But it sounds like you've done the research, right? Do
- 1:30:31Speaker 6: you have any, like, artifacts or things that you've purchased?
- 1:30:34Speaker 4: I don't have the money. But I think it's really cool.
- 1:30:38Speaker 5: When Belichick was hired by Kraft, he gave him this
- 1:30:41Speaker 5: photo that was signed by Babe Ruth and Ted Williams.
- 1:30:44Speaker 4: And it's a picture of the two of them. That
- 1:30:47Speaker 4: is cool. That's an heirloom.
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: I've been to the Babe Ruth Museum, his old house,
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: next to the Baltimore Stadium.
- 1:30:54Speaker 14: Oh, yeah?
- 1:30:54Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: Pretty cool.
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:30:56Speaker 9: Favorite player.
- 1:30:57Speaker 5: He was just, you know, chasing women in the train,
- 1:31:00Speaker 5: wrapped in a towel, you know, smoking cigars, smoking.
- 1:31:03Speaker 6: A cigar and a cigarette at the same time.
- 1:31:05Speaker 9: Sounds like Roman.
- 1:31:05Speaker 5: Eating like 10 hot dogs before he played. That's my
- 1:31:08Speaker 5: kind of guy.
- 1:31:09Speaker 6: I'm hitting it there.
- 1:31:09Speaker 5: Bang.
- 1:31:10Speaker 9: Favorite player.
- 1:31:11Speaker 3: Was it, was it babe?
- 1:31:11Speaker 6: The legend continue.
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: Uh, legend comes to life.
- 1:31:14Speaker 5: No, it was, uh, probably written in the two thousands. Uh,
- 1:31:18Speaker 5: Eric lacks maybe.
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: Um, Was maybe the author, Eric Lacks?
- 1:31:22Speaker 8: He wasn't even old enough to see Babe Ruth. The
- 1:31:26Speaker 8: author of the book didn't even see him.
- 1:31:28Speaker 6: I would say Bobby Orr, I never watched him play,
- 1:31:31Speaker 6: but the shadow of him in the 80s growing up
- 1:31:34Speaker 6: was still there, and so there were still highlights. I
- 1:31:36Speaker 6: would never say Bobby Orr was my favorite player, but
- 1:31:38Speaker 6: I would say I watched enough of him and read
- 1:31:40Speaker 6: some of his books to appreciate what he meant.
- 1:31:43Speaker 5: I didn't watch a lot of Bruins when I was
- 1:31:45Speaker 5: a kid, so I didn't see Bobby Orr, but I
- 1:31:47Speaker 5: went to the New England Sports Museum.
- 1:31:49Speaker 12: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:31:49Speaker 4: And I saw like.
- 1:31:50Speaker 5: This 15 minute highlight thing of Bobby Orr.
- 1:31:54Speaker 4: I started to get a little emotional.
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: Unreal how good he was.
- 1:31:58Speaker 5: I mean, he's my favorite Bruin of all time.
- 1:32:01Speaker 4: I mean, he's like, Offense, defense. Unbelievable.
- 1:32:04Speaker 6: You can see any of these people play.
- 1:32:06Speaker 5: You know, like Bobby Orr, man. Like a little bit.
- 1:32:09Speaker 6: A little bit.
- 1:32:10Speaker 4: Yeah, Bobby Orr.
- 1:32:11Speaker 6: Bad news, though, probably, right?
- 1:32:13Speaker 9: Actually, I'm a big Middleton guy.
- 1:32:14Speaker 6: Rick Middleton. Rick Middleton. He's captain. Nifty.
- 1:32:16Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:32:16Speaker 6: Snifty. I just feel like... I love how everyone's trying
- 1:32:20Speaker 6: to pull random guys out and we're like, yeah, that's cool.
- 1:32:22Speaker 9: Bill Sharman.
- 1:32:23Speaker 8: Really liked him in the backcourt with Bob Cousy in
- 1:32:28Speaker 8: the late 1950s.
- 1:32:30Speaker 3: He's mocking you.
- 1:32:32Speaker 8: I don't want it to come across like I don't
- 1:32:34Speaker 8: have respect for the OGs. I have a lot of
- 1:32:37Speaker 8: respect for all those guys. I'm just talking about my
- 1:32:40Speaker 8: personal favorite player. I have a ton of respect for
- 1:32:44Speaker 8: Bobby Orr. Bobby Orr is one of the best hockey
- 1:32:46Speaker 8: players of all time. But I can't possibly tell you
- 1:32:50Speaker 8: what it was like to watch Bobby Orr play.
- 1:32:52Speaker 6: So go watch him, Magic.
- 1:32:54Speaker 9: You're watching him 50 years later.
- 1:32:56Speaker 4: That's all right. Go watch him.
- 1:32:58Speaker 6: I have.
- 1:32:59Speaker 4: Appreciate his skills.
- 1:33:00Speaker 8: I just said I do appreciate his skills. I can't
- 1:33:04Speaker 8: possibly call him my favorite player.
- 1:33:06Speaker 3: See, now you're being like he is to you. You're
- 1:33:08Speaker 3: chastising him for not feeling what you feel.
- 1:33:10Speaker 4: Well, I'm just saying, he's like, I can't do this.
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: I can't do this. No, you can.
- 1:33:13Speaker 9: No, you can't. I can't put myself back into 1972, Fred.
- 1:33:18Speaker 4: Yes, you can.
- 1:33:19Speaker 6: No, I literally can.
- 1:33:20Speaker 4: Go on the internet and watch him.
- 1:33:22Speaker 6: But that's not the same.
- 1:33:23Speaker 5: You know what happened.
- 1:33:24Speaker 4: I know it's not the same, but you can watch him.
- 1:33:26Speaker 9: I can't. Thank you, Paul. It's not the same.
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: That's like I always say to me, like all my
- 1:33:32Speaker 3: favorite players in general... Or when I was, like, a kid. Right. Like,
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: I can't have that. You know, like, I have my
- 1:33:39Speaker 3: favorites that are, like, Marcus Jones. I talk about him
- 1:33:42Speaker 3: all the time. Ramondre Stevenson. These are, like, probably my
- 1:33:45Speaker 3: favorite players on the current team. But I don't feel
- 1:33:48Speaker 3: about them the way I felt about, like, Stanley Morgan
- 1:33:51Speaker 3: when I was a kid.
- 1:33:52Speaker 5: And he was this, like, great player that I watched
- 1:33:54Speaker 5: every week.
- 1:33:55Speaker 9: Paul Pierce. It's different.
- 1:33:56Speaker 11: Pedro.
- 1:33:57Speaker 9: David Ortiz.
- 1:33:58Speaker 3: I can't put myself back in that spot.
- 1:34:00Speaker 6: You know who I'm remembering I really liked was Dennis Johnson.
- 1:34:02Speaker 6: That was my favorite Celtic I remember in the 80s.
- 1:34:05Speaker 6: They were winning titles. I don't know why he was
- 1:34:07Speaker 6: my favorite.
- 1:34:08Speaker 9: Because he's like the glue guy. He's like Derek White.
- 1:34:11Speaker 9: He's like the glue guy of the team.
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: Like DJ.
- 1:34:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:34:15Speaker 4: Anyway, I guess no one else cares because no one's
- 1:34:17Speaker 4: calling in about it.
- 1:34:18Speaker 3: Well, Christian said that he let off his call.
- 1:34:21Speaker 9: Because they know.
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: Him, right?
- 1:34:25Speaker 15: Yep.
- 1:34:25Speaker 4: But that's okay.
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: That's fine.
- 1:34:28Speaker 4: Let's see. A lot of emails coming in, though.
- 1:34:29Speaker 3: A lot of emails.
- 1:34:31Speaker 4: Nick writes in... Oh, wait. There was another one.
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: Never mind.
- 1:34:37Speaker 4: When A.J.
- 1:34:38Speaker 5: Brown comes back, will we see more dominance in more
- 1:34:41Speaker 5: like we did last year with Drake May? Oh, God.
- 1:34:44Speaker 3: I have no idea.
- 1:34:45Speaker 6: I don't know when he's coming back. I don't know
- 1:34:46Speaker 6: what it's going to look like. I don't know where
- 1:34:48Speaker 6: Drake's going to be back at at that point. Has
- 1:34:50Speaker 6: he established chemistry with other guys and it's going pretty
- 1:34:52Speaker 6: good and you feel like... Or is... AJ Brown coming
- 1:34:55Speaker 6: back and you're like, save us, please.
- 1:34:57Speaker 3: Can I just say that it better not be that situation?
- 1:35:00Speaker 3: Cause then things are going to be looking bleak.
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: If you have to wait for him to come back
- 1:35:05Speaker 3: to get, you know, the offense back on track.
- 1:35:07Speaker 4: Phil in the UK.
- 1:35:08Speaker 5: Do you think we are asking Drake to do too
- 1:35:10Speaker 5: much at the line of scrimmage?
- 1:35:11Speaker 4: And he is overthinking.
- 1:35:12Speaker 5: He's an off platform gunslinger and they are trying to
- 1:35:15Speaker 5: make him too much like Brady to his detriment.
- 1:35:18Speaker 8: I didn't realize where that email was going. No, I,
- 1:35:22Speaker 8: I don't think that the coaches are doing that. I
- 1:35:24Speaker 8: think our expectations are too high for him in terms
- 1:35:28Speaker 8: of the ability to get to the line of scrimmage
- 1:35:31Speaker 8: and put the defense offense in the right play and
- 1:35:33Speaker 8: know that they're falling into cover to you when they're
- 1:35:35Speaker 8: showing single high and all the things that Brady was
- 1:35:37Speaker 8: talking about at the beginning of the show. I don't
- 1:35:40Speaker 8: think the coaches are doing that, but I think that
- 1:35:42Speaker 8: as a fan base and we might be doing that
- 1:35:45Speaker 8: a little bit.
- 1:35:45Speaker 6: And I would say I'm kind of guilty of it
- 1:35:47Speaker 6: in that pumping that up all off season of year
- 1:35:49Speaker 6: two in a system. I want to see a big
- 1:35:51Speaker 6: leap and there hasn't been a big leap. So can
- 1:35:53Speaker 6: there be still a leap over the course of the season?
- 1:35:55Speaker 6: I think that's still realistic, but I think I, I
- 1:35:58Speaker 6: would look at myself first and say, I might've been
- 1:36:00Speaker 6: a little bit unrealistic and just expectations of, year two,
- 1:36:03Speaker 6: he was so good last year and he's just going
- 1:36:05Speaker 6: to be building on top of it. It's, it's a
- 1:36:07Speaker 6: struggle at this position and it's, it's really hard. So,
- 1:36:09Speaker 6: Got to give him a little bit of grace as
- 1:36:11Speaker 6: he works.
- 1:36:13Speaker 5: Joe says, Evan, you said if it's third and ten,
- 1:36:16Speaker 5: you can't audible to a run. But if you have
- 1:36:18Speaker 5: Henderson out there and you get the look you want,
- 1:36:20Speaker 5: why not? I get it if the game situation is
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: essentially convert or lose. But any other time, I think statistically,
- 1:36:27Speaker 5: Drake couldn't top last year. But if this team was
- 1:36:30Speaker 5: going to be better, it was going to be because
- 1:36:32Speaker 5: his mental took the next step.
- 1:36:35Speaker 4: He could get.
- 1:36:36Speaker 5: You an 11-yard run on third and 10, and Henderson
- 1:36:39Speaker 5: could be out there because Drake could make up for
- 1:36:42Speaker 5: his pass-blocking difficulties with his mind or his legs.
- 1:36:46Speaker 4: I think you can do that.
- 1:36:47Speaker 9: But the odds are against you.
- 1:36:49Speaker 3: Absolutely, you can definitely run the ball on third and 10,
- 1:36:53Speaker 3: but that's not a high-percentage conversion.
- 1:36:56Speaker 9: Might as well punt.
- 1:36:58Speaker 6: You know, one thing I thought about Travion, and I
- 1:37:00Speaker 6: don't know if I like it or not, but I
- 1:37:01Speaker 6: felt like he's very north-south, and he is not even
- 1:37:04Speaker 6: thinking about trying to Get around guys and butt to
- 1:37:06Speaker 6: the outside. He is all forward, all speed. I'd like
- 1:37:10Speaker 6: to see a little bit more vision, but I don't
- 1:37:12Speaker 6: know if I love it or hate it because I
- 1:37:14Speaker 6: like that he's just going north-south and getting yards. but
- 1:37:17Speaker 6: I would love to just see a little bit more vision.
- 1:37:20Speaker 3: I'm coming to grips with what he is, I think.
- 1:37:22Speaker 3: And I think he's an electric home run hitter who
- 1:37:25Speaker 3: you're going to have to live with the other stuff.
- 1:37:26Speaker 5: And that's okay.
- 1:37:27Speaker 8: I liked how he ran last week. I think that
- 1:37:30Speaker 8: for him, that's probably the best bet is to get
- 1:37:33Speaker 8: north-south and be decisive and pick up speed because even
- 1:37:38Speaker 8: when he runs into piles, he's punching four or five
- 1:37:41Speaker 8: yards out sometimes because he does pick up a lot
- 1:37:45Speaker 8: of speed. And then every once in a while, the
- 1:37:47Speaker 8: C's part, and he's gone. I just don't think that
- 1:37:50Speaker 8: he's a fluid, loose athlete like a Kenneth Walker that
- 1:37:53Speaker 8: can be bouncing around and do that sort of thing.
- 1:37:56Speaker 8: I think that would lead to a lot of negative
- 1:37:58Speaker 8: runs if he started trying to hit the run at,
- 1:38:02Speaker 8: bounce him out, and do things like that.
- 1:38:04Speaker 5: Tucker writes in, I, for one, am very happy to
- 1:38:06Speaker 5: see the Bills have had so much success this September.
- 1:38:10Speaker 5: I feel this is setting up nicely for them to
- 1:38:13Speaker 5: be the regular season darling and then hit a wall
- 1:38:16Speaker 5: on the playoffs when they face some better defenses in
- 1:38:18Speaker 5: worse weather. Mark my words, they are headed to another
- 1:38:21Speaker 5: divisional round or AFC Championship exit. Let them shoot all
- 1:38:25Speaker 5: their bullets now.
- 1:38:26Speaker 6: Paul and I had an interesting conversation.
- 1:38:28Speaker 4: Written by Barth.
- 1:38:28Speaker 3: If you're asking me, I think... that that's probably accurate,
- 1:38:31Speaker 3: because I don't think Buffalo is that good, like talent-wise.
- 1:38:34Speaker 3: I think the quarterback is outstanding.
- 1:38:36Speaker 6: The conversation we had, I think, on Monday morning after
- 1:38:38Speaker 6: watching Buffalo, I was really impressed with them, and I
- 1:38:40Speaker 6: felt kind of like just the weight had been lifted.
- 1:38:42Speaker 6: They kind of were just playing loose and free, and
- 1:38:44Speaker 6: I'll let you say what you said.
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: Got some Pete Carroll vibes.
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:38:48Speaker 3: It's it's Carol 97 vibes. Everything looks great because the
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: you know, the mean, you know, the mean old cuss
- 1:38:54Speaker 3: is gone. And now we can do what we want.
- 1:38:56Speaker 3: What happens when they face adversity? And that's the one
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: thing that I would say strongly a positive in Sean
- 1:39:02Speaker 3: McDermott's column was he handled adversity well. when they, and
- 1:39:07Speaker 3: I'm talking about when they had, you know, lost a
- 1:39:09Speaker 3: couple in the middle of the year, when they were
- 1:39:11Speaker 3: seven and six and everybody was like, what's wrong with Buffalo?
- 1:39:13Speaker 3: Then all of a sudden you look up and they
- 1:39:14Speaker 3: finished the season 11 and six. They did that from
- 1:39:17Speaker 3: time to time and were always a threat come playoff time.
- 1:39:22Speaker 3: Will they be able to do, because no team goes
- 1:39:24Speaker 3: through the season without any adversity. How does Joe Brady
- 1:39:27Speaker 3: handle that? Right now it looks like everybody's, like Mike said,
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: everybody's free and easy and it looks great. What happens
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: when someone has a plan? I mean, I know they
- 1:39:35Speaker 3: haven't placed any, good defenses yet. Like, you know, Houston stinks.
- 1:39:40Speaker 3: But what happens when someone like Houston shuts them down?
- 1:39:43Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: And they maybe lose a little faith in Joe Bria.
- 1:39:46Speaker 9: I would... their defense is still a problem.
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:39:50Speaker 8: So I, to me, like Josh Allen's going to be
- 1:39:52Speaker 8: Josh Allen. He's going to be a mother to go
- 1:39:55Speaker 8: up against no matter what, but they're defensively Houston had a,
- 1:39:59Speaker 8: had a really good game against them, put 30 on
- 1:40:01Speaker 8: the board. Jared Goff, like would tore him up basically
- 1:40:04Speaker 8: for that entire game. I, I don't, Buffalo is going
- 1:40:09Speaker 8: to outscore teams, and we know that, but is their defense,
- 1:40:13Speaker 8: once again, going to be sort of like their Achilles
- 1:40:16Speaker 8: heel in the playoffs when it matters?
- 1:40:17Speaker 3: I would give them a little positive in the second
- 1:40:21Speaker 3: game because before Jared Goff started ripping them up, they
- 1:40:25Speaker 3: had a 21-0 lead. They shut them down early in
- 1:40:29Speaker 3: that game and made Goff play catch-up. However, or as
- 1:40:34Speaker 3: Tommy and Quincy would say on the Sports Hub, however.
- 1:40:38Speaker 3: I went back and looked at some of the highlights
- 1:40:40Speaker 3: of that game, and there were some penalties. Houston kind
- 1:40:43Speaker 3: of shot itself in the foot. It wasn't like the
- 1:40:44Speaker 3: Bills were shutting them down early in that game. Houston
- 1:40:47Speaker 3: was kind of a co-conspirator and falling behind. I mean, Detroit, sorry.
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: Detroit was a co-conspirator in their demise early in the game.
- 1:40:55Speaker 5: And then, you know.
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: They got some, oh, by the way, touchdowns, I thought,
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: late in the game. They were never within 10.
- 1:41:02Speaker 9: That's fair.
- 1:41:03Speaker 8: I think that it's also a new system. Jim Leonard
- 1:41:06Speaker 8: is installing a new defense and a very different defense,
- 1:41:09Speaker 8: I would say, than the one that Sean McDermott ran.
- 1:41:11Speaker 8: And remember, it's Sean McDermott for like a decade. running
- 1:41:14Speaker 8: the same system. So their personnel department is also identifying
- 1:41:17Speaker 8: players that fit his system, you know, really heavy, like
- 1:41:21Speaker 8: four down nickel cover to like, this is a three
- 1:41:24Speaker 8: down front. It's a three, four defense. Uh, I think
- 1:41:27Speaker 8: they want to play more man to man. Like it's
- 1:41:29Speaker 8: a little different than what they were doing. And so
- 1:41:32Speaker 8: that takes time. So it's only been two games in
- 1:41:34Speaker 8: a new system. And it was the new defensive coordinator.
- 1:41:37Speaker 8: I'll give them that grace, but.
- 1:41:39Speaker 3: It hasn't been good though.
- 1:41:40Speaker 8: And it hasn't really been good since the start of
- 1:41:42Speaker 8: last year. Like defensively, they'd struggled last year. They struggled
- 1:41:45Speaker 8: a lot too, which is I think a big reason
- 1:41:47Speaker 8: why McDermott isn't there. Cause that's his side of the
- 1:41:49Speaker 8: ball is supposed to be defense.
- 1:41:51Speaker 6: So a lot of love for Dion Walker, that Kentucky kid.
- 1:41:53Speaker 19: Yeah.
- 1:41:54Speaker 6: He's a big guy. Russo's playing pretty well. And we'll
- 1:41:56Speaker 6: see how it all comes together.
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: I mean, best case scenario for them is what Evan said.
- 1:42:01Speaker 3: You know, it takes some time to adjust to a
- 1:42:03Speaker 3: new system. And by the end of the year, they're
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: actually playing pretty good defense to go to, you know,
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: to augment the offense, which has kind of been the
- 1:42:09Speaker 3: opposite of what McDermott. I always feel like McDermott defenses
- 1:42:12Speaker 3: are taken on water as the time that by the
- 1:42:13Speaker 3: time the playoffs come, they always kind of struggled with
- 1:42:16Speaker 3: the run, but they always have the lead. So you
- 1:42:18Speaker 3: can't run the ball as much as maybe you want to.
- 1:42:21Speaker 3: Maybe it's the opposite this year, and they're a little
- 1:42:24Speaker 3: bit better.
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: When it counts.
- 1:42:25Speaker 5: Kylan Pembroke about Catch-22 on Thursdays. He wants to know,
- 1:42:29Speaker 5: will you, Evan, and Alex do picks on Thursdays? And
- 1:42:35Speaker 5: can they be so that Barth competes with the PU crew?
- 1:42:39Speaker 8: So I did bring this up to him, probably not
- 1:42:41Speaker 8: doing it live on Catch-22, but since we have the
- 1:42:43Speaker 8: newsletter and stuff like that, I said, oh, we should...
- 1:42:47Speaker 8: We should have your picks, but he has his own
- 1:42:48Speaker 8: show that he makes picks on.
- 1:42:50Speaker 6: I just want to spoil it.
- 1:42:51Speaker 9: Yeah, it's very Sunday kickoff picks.
- 1:42:53Speaker 3: Imagine, Mike, if you and I had to do that.
- 1:42:55Speaker 3: It's like 17 different ways. The hardest thing for me
- 1:42:59Speaker 3: is to remember what I picked on Monday.
- 1:43:00Speaker 8: Yeah, but I did bring that up to him, not
- 1:43:03Speaker 8: to do it live on the show, but to put
- 1:43:05Speaker 8: it in the newsletter. Because I think we had Jack
- 1:43:08Speaker 8: made picks one week, Jack Webb.
- 1:43:10Speaker 7: Jack Webb.
- 1:43:11Speaker 5: Yep, Jack Webb.
- 1:43:12Speaker 9: We love Jack.
- 1:43:13Speaker 5: Tim Cook writes in, Fred and Paul, I was a
- 1:43:17Speaker 5: huge PFW subscriber back in the day, and I loved
- 1:43:20Speaker 5: your editorials that you would throw out there. They certainly
- 1:43:23Speaker 5: could be critical, and you held nothing back. Both of you, however,
- 1:43:27Speaker 5: I always noted a sense of optimism in your columns
- 1:43:30Speaker 5: or editorials. So we're not in print anymore, and Unfiltered
- 1:43:33Speaker 5: is amazing. It's my PFW fix during the season. My
- 1:43:37Speaker 5: question is, Can you both confidently say that Josh and
- 1:43:40Speaker 5: Drake will click one day, there's a switch will be flipped,
- 1:43:44Speaker 5: and we'll see total buy-in between the two?
- 1:43:47Speaker 4: Or maybe a slow progression, or maybe not at all?
- 1:43:50Speaker 5: I have confidence.
- 1:43:51Speaker 6: I think it's going to be a slow progression. I
- 1:43:53Speaker 6: don't want to say slow, but I think it's going
- 1:43:55Speaker 6: to be a progression and continue to be. But I
- 1:43:57Speaker 6: have confidence they'll get to a certain point. You just
- 1:43:59Speaker 6: can't expect them to be Tom Brady and Was last
- 1:44:03Speaker 6: year not clicking?
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: Just took the words out of my mouth. MVP level
- 1:44:08Speaker 3: last year, there's some adjusting going on right now in
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: terms of the Patriots personnel, in terms of the way
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: other teams are playing them.
- 1:44:15Speaker 6: To me, it's just if they can push through this,
- 1:44:17Speaker 6: I think it could really be something that you can
- 1:44:20Speaker 6: build off of and get to that next level because
- 1:44:23Speaker 6: defenses have a beat on you right now. You don't
- 1:44:25Speaker 6: have your best weapon with you. get through these things.
- 1:44:28Speaker 6: Learn how to win with other guys and with your
- 1:44:31Speaker 6: mind as much as your body, and then maybe they
- 1:44:32Speaker 6: end up at the end of the season and it's
- 1:44:33Speaker 6: all coming together.
- 1:44:35Speaker 5: Phones are lighting up again.
- 1:44:37Speaker 4: 855-PATS-500. Chucky's in Wisconsin. What's up, Chucky?
- 1:44:42Speaker 15: Hey, guys. Just calling in. I got out of lectures.
- 1:44:44Speaker 15: Sorry I'm catching up on today's show. But I called
- 1:44:47Speaker 15: in yesterday about Drake May and expectations, and I guess
- 1:44:53Speaker 15: I was a little bit feeling bad about bringing it up,
- 1:44:56Speaker 15: it sounds like it's building something bigger. I guess as
- 1:45:02Speaker 15: somebody who works with college students, I just wish people
- 1:45:08Speaker 15: would stop and adjust those expectations. These are still very
- 1:45:12Speaker 15: young men and in some cases are having to deal
- 1:45:15Speaker 15: with some life-altering money that none of us can imagine.
- 1:45:20Speaker 15: But moving forward, we talk about defense's deuce and When
- 1:45:26Speaker 15: might we have a conversation about breaking the defense down
- 1:45:29Speaker 15: in the eyes of a quarterback? So is it possible
- 1:45:33Speaker 15: that we talk about top five defenses, but maybe we
- 1:45:35Speaker 15: should be talking about top five defensive lines or top
- 1:45:39Speaker 15: five linebacking court because those all play a different role
- 1:45:43Speaker 15: in how a quarterback performs during a game? I'll take
- 1:45:46Speaker 15: it off the air. Thanks a lot, guys.
- 1:45:48Speaker 6: Okay, thanks.
- 1:45:49Speaker 9: Not sure I get the question.
- 1:45:50Speaker 6: I'm not sure I get the question either. I don't know.
- 1:45:52Speaker 5: I don't understand.
- 1:45:53Speaker 6: Sorry, Chucky. Oh, they hung up. Yeah, I didn't.
- 1:45:58Speaker 9: Like the Patriots having a top five defensive line?
- 1:46:01Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't know. Was he trying to say you've
- 1:46:02Speaker 6: got to rank individual position groups because every defense is different?
- 1:46:06Speaker 6: Is that what he was getting at? But it sounded
- 1:46:07Speaker 6: like he was going through the offensive point of view.
- 1:46:09Speaker 9: Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:46:10Speaker 6: Sorry, Chuggy. Call back. Clarify.
- 1:46:12Speaker 9: Yeah, I didn't.
- 1:46:13Speaker 4: Or write in. Clarify via email. Let's see. He's back.
- 1:46:18Speaker 4: Chris with a T-I-A-N from Boston. Christian.
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: Hey, Freddie.
- 1:46:23Speaker 11: Hey.
- 1:46:24Speaker 4: What's going on? How we doing?
- 1:46:27Speaker 6: You know, these.
- 1:46:28Speaker 10: New hours, this is killing me. I'm a creature of habit.
- 1:46:31Speaker 10: I'm 12 to 2 for 20 years, and then all
- 1:46:32Speaker 10: of a sudden, you know, you pull me out, and
- 1:46:34Speaker 10: now it's 11 to 1, and I'm all messed up.
- 1:46:37Speaker 5: Sorry about that, but, you know, you'll adjust. Team schedule.
- 1:46:40Speaker 10: You got some unhappy people out there, Fred. You know,
- 1:46:42Speaker 10: you're alienating some of our friends on the West Coast.
- 1:46:44Speaker 10: This hour change is a big difference for a lot
- 1:46:46Speaker 10: of people.
- 1:46:46Speaker 5: I know. We have nothing else going on.
- 1:46:48Speaker 3: Rally the whack pack.
- 1:46:49Speaker 2: Okay?
- 1:46:50Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:46:51Speaker 10: I figured I'd known you long enough to express my feelings.
- 1:46:55Speaker 4: That's fine.
- 1:46:59Speaker 10: Moving on to Drake.
- 1:47:02Speaker 4: I just want to say it.
- 1:47:04Speaker 10: I tried calling the post-game show on Sunday. This kid's head,
- 1:47:08Speaker 10: and many people have said it by now, it looks
- 1:47:11Speaker 10: like his head is just spinning right now. And there
- 1:47:14Speaker 10: was a segment on Twitter, and then I forget who
- 1:47:18Speaker 10: it was, or... you know, who said it, but it was,
- 1:47:21Speaker 10: it was something about now you see what a quarterback
- 1:47:24Speaker 10: is in the range of his 30th to his 50th start.
- 1:47:29Speaker 10: Like that range is the range that people reference on
- 1:47:33Speaker 10: whether or not he's going to be able to be
- 1:47:35Speaker 10: the guy and be a top five guy or just
- 1:47:39Speaker 10: be a quarterback. And I think in his head right now,
- 1:47:44Speaker 10: he really is just spinning to the adjustments, to the adjustments,
- 1:47:47Speaker 10: to the adjustments. And he, he just doesn't look like
- 1:47:50Speaker 10: he's got that, that flick and that just sitting back
- 1:47:53Speaker 10: there and just letting it go. And I was really
- 1:47:57Speaker 10: disappointed in the wide receivers again, Sunday, I'm sorry, but
- 1:48:01Speaker 10: like pop Douglas, you know, the game started, they motioned out. Um,
- 1:48:07Speaker 10: I think it was, uh, uh, Stevenson in the backfield
- 1:48:11Speaker 10: and it looked like it was going to be a
- 1:48:12Speaker 10: spread them and shred them game. And I was like,
- 1:48:14Speaker 10: all right, here we go.
- 1:48:16Speaker 6: And then they never went.
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: Back to that.
- 1:48:18Speaker 10: Um, And so that was amazing. that was surprising. And
- 1:48:21Speaker 10: I just, these guys, you just got to get them going,
- 1:48:24Speaker 10: and they just got to get this passing game going.
- 1:48:26Speaker 5: Well, as we said with Pittsburgh, they started out in
- 1:48:29Speaker 5: man and then quickly realized we can't do that and
- 1:48:31Speaker 5: went into zone, and that could be what you were
- 1:48:34Speaker 5: looking at.
- 1:48:34Speaker 8: Yeah, they tried to run Haas again later in the game,
- 1:48:37Speaker 8: and it didn't hit the same way. you know, empty
- 1:48:41Speaker 8: is five man pass pro. So like, if you're going
- 1:48:44Speaker 8: to go empty, then your offensive line is, is everybody's
- 1:48:48Speaker 8: on an Island. So how much of that are they
- 1:48:50Speaker 8: comfortable doing? I think, you know, thinking of things through
- 1:48:54Speaker 8: the prism of, can we block this play is I
- 1:48:57Speaker 8: think where they're at right now, offensively, do they have
- 1:49:00Speaker 8: the confidence in the offensive line to drop back pass
- 1:49:04Speaker 8: in five man pass pro 20, 25 times a game.
- 1:49:08Speaker 9: I don't think they do yet.
- 1:49:08Speaker 4: Let me ask you a question. Evan, you might know
- 1:49:11Speaker 4: the answer.
- 1:49:12Speaker 5: Where do the Patriots rank so far through two weeks
- 1:49:15Speaker 5: in number of offensive plays?
- 1:49:18Speaker 9: I don't know the answer to that question.
- 1:49:20Speaker 3: So they had a lot of plays in the first game.
- 1:49:21Speaker 9: They did. They had like a 20-play discrepancy against Seattle.
- 1:49:24Speaker 7: They had a.
- 1:49:24Speaker 3: Big time of possession advantage in Seattle.
- 1:49:27Speaker 4: Not time of possession.
- 1:49:28Speaker 3: Number of plays. They had a lot of plays. I mean,
- 1:49:30Speaker 3: if you had the ball three or four minutes longer
- 1:49:33Speaker 3: than the other team, you ran a.
- 1:49:34Speaker 5: Lot of plays.
- 1:49:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:49:36Speaker 9: I can look it up quickly.
- 1:49:38Speaker 3: I think this game was, was more even in terms
- 1:49:42Speaker 3: of that.
- 1:49:43Speaker 9: Right in the middle of the league. There's 16th.
- 1:49:45Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:49:46Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:49:47Speaker 9: There's 16th in plays per game.
- 1:49:48Speaker 8: But yeah, I think that, you know, the more that
- 1:49:50Speaker 8: I digest what they're doing offensively, the more I realize
- 1:49:54Speaker 8: how much they're doing to protect the offensive line and
- 1:49:56Speaker 8: to make life easier on the offensive line. And, We
- 1:49:59Speaker 8: talked at the beginning of the show about Jacksonville not
- 1:50:02Speaker 8: quite having that level of a front that they've faced
- 1:50:05Speaker 8: the last two weeks and in the playoffs last year.
- 1:50:08Speaker 8: At some point, I do think you need to take
- 1:50:10Speaker 8: the training wheels off of Will Campbell a little bit
- 1:50:12Speaker 8: and say, you're playing well, you look healthy, you look stronger,
- 1:50:15Speaker 8: you look bigger.
- 1:50:16Speaker 9: Like, let's see if.
- 1:50:18Speaker 8: Can he just go out there like Garrett Bowles did
- 1:50:20Speaker 8: last week and control Josh Hines Allen? You know, can,
- 1:50:23Speaker 8: can he do that now? And that way there, you
- 1:50:25Speaker 8: can get more guys into the route. You can spread
- 1:50:27Speaker 8: them out like the caller wanted them to do, but
- 1:50:29Speaker 8: you can do different things. If you feel like you
- 1:50:31Speaker 8: need to load up to pass, protect with the offensive
- 1:50:34Speaker 8: line and then you're not doing that. You're not putting
- 1:50:37Speaker 8: five guys in the pattern if you're chipping and you're
- 1:50:40Speaker 8: helping and you're play-action bootlegs and things like that. That's
- 1:50:44Speaker 8: not the scheme that you're running.
- 1:50:46Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:50:47Speaker 5: Chucky's calling back. He's going to clarify his question. Give
- 1:50:50Speaker 5: it another try, Chucky.
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: Oh, hey.
- 1:50:53Speaker 5: Hey, guys.
- 1:50:54Speaker 15: Sorry about that. No, I was thinking about the idea
- 1:50:56Speaker 15: of the Pittsburgh Steelers, for example, specifically. I wouldn't necessarily
- 1:51:01Speaker 15: throw them into that top five defense unit category.
- 1:51:05Speaker 3: Not even close.
- 1:51:05Speaker 15: But over the last few years, they're definitely a top
- 1:51:08Speaker 15: five defensive line. And just from Drake and the game,
- 1:51:12Speaker 15: it's kind of like if you're dealing with a top
- 1:51:14Speaker 15: five defensive line, that might bring a whole different aspect
- 1:51:18Speaker 15: to it than trying to deal with, say, Houston or Seattle,
- 1:51:22Speaker 15: where it's a complete defense, right?
- 1:51:25Speaker 3: Well, I think both of those teams have significantly better
- 1:51:27Speaker 3: defensive lines than Pittsburgh does, too.
- 1:51:30Speaker 4: But, you know, think about it, though, Chucky.
- 1:51:32Speaker 5: If that top five defensive line gave the Patriots that
- 1:51:35Speaker 5: much problems, if that's the same with every team, they'd
- 1:51:39Speaker 5: be a top five defense, and they're not. Pittsburgh is
- 1:51:41Speaker 5: a middle-of-the-pack defense.
- 1:51:42Speaker 4: Yeah, right.
- 1:51:43Speaker 3: They were last year. In other words, this is two games.
- 1:51:46Speaker 3: I'm not going up.
- 1:51:46Speaker 5: That talent on the front isn't enough to elevate their
- 1:51:50Speaker 5: whole defense.
- 1:51:53Speaker 15: Right, but if that talent on the front is in
- 1:51:55Speaker 15: your face as a quarterback... But.
- 1:51:57Speaker 5: Other teams seem to be able to figure it out
- 1:51:59Speaker 5: because they're not a top-five defense.
- 1:52:02Speaker 8: I think it's an interesting question going off of what
- 1:52:05Speaker 8: I was just saying of like, they go into that
- 1:52:09Speaker 8: game against Pittsburgh and they say, TJ, what cam Hayward,
- 1:52:13Speaker 8: Alex Highsmith, we cannot let those guys wreck this game.
- 1:52:17Speaker 8: We can't let those three players, especially I would say
- 1:52:20Speaker 8: probably what take this game over.
- 1:52:22Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:52:23Speaker 8: And so do you do, you call plays and you
- 1:52:25Speaker 8: game plan and you script differently.
- 1:52:27Speaker 3: Because that's the only way you can lose.
- 1:52:29Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: Correct.
- 1:52:30Speaker 9: No, a hundred percent.
- 1:52:31Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:52:31Speaker 3: And that's where I would agree with the game plan
- 1:52:33Speaker 3: in general, because I just watched Atlanta play. have every
- 1:52:37Speaker 3: opportunity to win the game with nothing on offense. But
- 1:52:42Speaker 3: they lost it because they couldn't prevent T.J. Watt from
- 1:52:46Speaker 3: making a game-changing play.
- 1:52:47Speaker 9: They made an incredible play.
- 1:52:48Speaker 10: Right.
- 1:52:48Speaker 3: So if the Patriots go into the game and they say,
- 1:52:51Speaker 3: that team doesn't have any offense at all, we're not
- 1:52:54Speaker 3: going to lose this game, provided that we don't give
- 1:52:56Speaker 3: them seven points. Like, that makes sense to me.
- 1:53:01Speaker 8: I think that's how they've approached the first two games.
- 1:53:04Speaker 3: And Fred's right. That's why Pittsburgh was a middle-of-the-pack defense
- 1:53:07Speaker 3: last year. That's why. They have elite talent at certain spots,
- 1:53:14Speaker 3: but they don't have an elite defense because it's just
- 1:53:17Speaker 3: sort of average otherwise. Other teams are able to say,
- 1:53:20Speaker 3: TJ Watt's not going to wreck this game for us.
- 1:53:23Speaker 3: And I think Evan explained how teams do that. They
- 1:53:27Speaker 3: make sure that We're not going to expose ourselves here
- 1:53:30Speaker 3: because that's the one way they can win this game.
- 1:53:32Speaker 6: That's not what I would say. It's like you have
- 1:53:33Speaker 6: to first not lose the game before you can win
- 1:53:35Speaker 6: the game, and that's how do we lose this game.
- 1:53:37Speaker 6: TJ Watt blows it up. It's all right. So what
- 1:53:38Speaker 6: do we got to do to make sure that doesn't happen?
- 1:53:40Speaker 8: Yeah, I just think that the problem with that strategy
- 1:53:42Speaker 8: and how we're up against it is when you go
- 1:53:44Speaker 8: up against a team like Seattle, when you go up
- 1:53:45Speaker 8: a defense against Houston, Denver, if you're playing with such
- 1:53:50Speaker 8: a governor on your offense because you're worried about the
- 1:53:53Speaker 8: offensive line getting exposed— It's really hard to move the
- 1:53:56Speaker 8: ball against those types of defenses.
- 1:53:58Speaker 6: But is there a line between being worried about the
- 1:54:01Speaker 6: offensive line being exposed and just giving extra attention to
- 1:54:04Speaker 6: their best player? You know what I mean? Is it necessary?
- 1:54:06Speaker 6: We suck. We can't block. Or is it like, this
- 1:54:09Speaker 6: guy's pretty good. We still feel okay about our line.
- 1:54:12Speaker 6: You know what I mean? There's a line in there somewhere.
- 1:54:13Speaker 8: And granted, they were winning the game for three quarters,
- 1:54:16Speaker 8: but to go back to the opener, this is why
- 1:54:18Speaker 8: they ran the ball 16 times on first down. This
- 1:54:20Speaker 8: is why whenever they tried to push the ball down
- 1:54:22Speaker 8: the field, it was seven-man pass protection, and they were
- 1:54:25Speaker 8: booting Drake May out of the pocket. All those things
- 1:54:28Speaker 8: are why they were doing that, but you see the points.
- 1:54:32Speaker 8: You don't score very much if you're trying to play
- 1:54:35Speaker 8: offense that way.
- 1:54:38Speaker 4: Let's see.
- 1:54:39Speaker 5: Tyler says, he's from Georgia, with us turning the page
- 1:54:42Speaker 5: to Jacksonville, I have an admittedly unfair trivia question.
- 1:54:46Speaker 3: An admittedly unfair trivia question.
- 1:54:48Speaker 5: Trevor Lawrence is from my hometown of Cartersville, Georgia. A
- 1:54:51Speaker 5: handful of other celebrities have called Cartersville home, including which
- 1:54:56Speaker 5: Seinfeld alum?
- 1:54:59Speaker 6: Cartersville, Ohio?
- 1:55:01Speaker 4: Cartersville, Georgia.
- 1:55:02Speaker 7: Kramer.
- 1:55:03Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:55:03Speaker 15: No.
- 1:55:05Speaker 20: Newman.
- 1:55:05Speaker 4: Yes, Wayne Knight.
- 1:55:07Speaker 5: My dad swears he saw him at a stoplight years ago.
- 1:55:10Speaker 5: My dad was looking at him, trying to figure out
- 1:55:12Speaker 5: if it was Wayne Knight. Once the light changed, he
- 1:55:15Speaker 5: saw my dad looking, kicked his head back during doing
- 1:55:19Speaker 5: the Newman laugh.
- 1:55:20Speaker 4: And drove off.
- 1:55:22Speaker 9: Is this North Carolina or South Carolina?
- 1:55:23Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:55:24Speaker 9: Which Carolina?
- 1:55:25Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:55:25Speaker 9: You said Carolina, right?
- 1:55:27Speaker 5: What did you think about the bills, and this is
- 1:55:29Speaker 5: all from reports, taking away or not giving a credential
- 1:55:33Speaker 5: to that long-term... time voice of the bills who now
- 1:55:35Speaker 5: walk right.
- 1:55:37Speaker 3: So I don't know. I don't know enough. I did
- 1:55:39Speaker 3: see on Twitter. I didn't read it. And I don't
- 1:55:42Speaker 3: know enough about the situation. If it was simply because
- 1:55:45Speaker 3: he wrote something that the team didn't like, that's weak.
- 1:55:47Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:55:48Speaker 5: Well, what he wrote was the one thing that could
- 1:55:50Speaker 5: hold this team back is rookie head coach Brady. If
- 1:55:54Speaker 5: that's what they took the credential away for, that is weak.
- 1:55:57Speaker 12: No.
- 1:55:57Speaker 4: I have a feeling there's more to the story.
- 1:55:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I do too. But I don't care what the
- 1:56:02Speaker 3: negative story that he wrote.
- 1:56:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:56:04Speaker 3: Like if it was even more scathing than that, I
- 1:56:06Speaker 3: don't take credentials away for people that don't write things
- 1:56:09Speaker 3: that I like. My guess is Fred's right. There's something
- 1:56:12Speaker 3: else that we don't know. If that's all he wrote.
- 1:56:15Speaker 3: And if he's no longer a radio guy, because he
- 1:56:18Speaker 3: doesn't do it anymore, right?
- 1:56:19Speaker 6: Well, he's writing for.
- 1:56:20Speaker 4: The Buffalo News. He's writing for the newspaper.
- 1:56:22Speaker 6: It's like a person with a credential who doesn't really
- 1:56:24Speaker 6: actually write things.
- 1:56:25Speaker 4: Oh, I thought he was still working.
- 1:56:27Speaker 3: Again, I don't know the story. If he's not working, then.
- 1:56:30Speaker 6: You just have a credential and you just go and
- 1:56:32Speaker 6: ask stupid questions and don't even write about it. Yeah,
- 1:56:34Speaker 6: this isn't a place to just go on Sunday.
- 1:56:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I think there are too many credentials issued, to
- 1:56:38Speaker 3: be honest.
- 1:56:38Speaker 5: I think there's more to that story, so I'm not immediately...
- 1:56:42Speaker 5: You know, condemning the Bills for what they did.
- 1:56:44Speaker 3: On the surface, it's weak on Buffalo's part. If he
- 1:56:47Speaker 3: just got his credential taken away because he wrote something
- 1:56:49Speaker 3: they didn't like, that's wrong.
- 1:56:51Speaker 6: I think we got those gray Buffalo uniforms coming up
- 1:56:53Speaker 6: this weekend, too. I know you like those.
- 1:56:54Speaker 4: Oh, those, the old white?
- 1:56:55Speaker 6: Yeah, the gray ones, the new ones they did with, like,
- 1:56:58Speaker 6: the blown-up Bill on the side. Oh, the ones that
- 1:56:59Speaker 6: people didn't like.
- 1:57:00Speaker 2: SMU's.
- 1:57:00Speaker 3: Paul liked them.
- 1:57:01Speaker 6: Paul liked them. Because they look like Diabessi. Somebody had
- 1:57:03Speaker 6: that joke, and it was perfect.
- 1:57:05Speaker 3: I think they look like SMU, and I kind of
- 1:57:06Speaker 3: like SMU's uniforms.
- 1:57:07Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:57:09Speaker 5: That's going to be it for this edition of Patriots Unfiltered,
- 1:57:11Speaker 5: but have no fear.
- 1:57:12Speaker 6: We'll be back tomorrow at 11.
- 1:57:15Speaker 5: Sorry, Christian.
- 1:57:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:57:17Speaker 5: And Catch-22 will be back at 10 tomorrow.
- 1:57:20Speaker 4: And they're still figuring out. They're trying to get their groove,
- 1:57:23Speaker 4: you know.
- 1:57:24Speaker 5: Evan, during the break, said, you know, what about doing it?
- 1:57:27Speaker 5: I said, no, just learn how to, you know, not
- 1:57:30Speaker 5: be so long-winded.
- 1:57:32Speaker 9: So don't do Catch-22. Do an abbreviated version. Got it.
- 1:57:36Speaker 6: Catch-17.
- 1:57:36Speaker 3: He really doesn't play well with others.
- 1:57:39Speaker 7: Catch-11.
- 1:57:39Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:57:40Speaker 4: We'll see you tomorrow.
- 1:57:44Speaker 6: Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
