- 0:00You've heard it at church, and if you've seen it online, maybe you've even said it yourself.
- 0:06It sounds biblical, but is it?
- 0:09Welcome to Jesus Never Said That, a special series from Half-Faith, Let It Begin.
- 0:15I'm Angel Santana, and today we're going beyond the quotes, cliches,
- 0:20and assumptions to discover what God's Word actually says.
- 0:25So grab your Bible and bring your questions. Have Faith Let It Begin starts right now.
- 0:31Have Faith Let It Begin when it starts right now.
- 0:38Welcome to Have Faith. Let it begin. Here's your host, Angel Santana.
- 0:44Good morning, everyone, and welcome back.
- 0:46Today, we're talking about advice that is everywhere.
- 0:50Movies tell us, songs tell us, motivational speakers tell us,
- 0:55social media definitely tells us.
- 0:57When you don't know what to do, just follow your heart.
- 1:02Yep, that's what I'm saying. Quote, just follow your heart, end quote.
- 1:06Sounds beautiful. sounds free right when you think yeah sounds like something
- 1:11that you would rewriting or written underneath a sunset on an instagram,
- 1:16and sometimes our hearts do point us towards something meaningful compassion,
- 1:22love a burden to help somebody a desire to pursue something god may actually
- 1:27be calling us toward so i'm not here to tell you never listen to your emotions nope.
- 1:33But i do want to ask a different question this morning.
- 1:37Should my heart be the final authority for my life? Because Jesus never said, follow your heart.
- 1:44Jesus said, follow me. I want to repeat that. He never said,
- 1:48follow your heart. He said, follow me.
- 1:52And those are not always the same direction. Here's a heart check for you.
- 1:56Let's get personal for just one second. Have you ever really wanted something
- 2:01and later realized that, well, it wouldn't be terrible for you?
- 2:05Come on. At the time, you were convinced this is it.
- 2:10This is the person. This is the opportunity. This is what I need. Maybe you even prayed.
- 2:16Maybe you said, God, please give me this. And then later you look back and thought,
- 2:21thank you, Lord, for saying no.
- 2:24Because our feeling can be powerful. But powerful doesn't always mean trustworthy.
- 2:30So here's today's heart check.
- 2:33When my feelings and God's word disagree.
- 2:37Which one gets the final say? That's where this gets very uncomfortable.
- 2:42Because following Jesus is pretty
- 2:44easy when Jesus is doing and going the direction I already wanted to go.
- 2:50But what about when he's not?
- 2:53The conversation happens to happen, right? I mean, I think when we need to make
- 2:59an important distinction, feelings aren't evil.
- 3:04Emotions aren't sinful. just because they're emotions.
- 3:07God created us with the ability to feel, and Jesus felt compassion.
- 3:13Jesus grieved. Jesus wept. Jesus experienced anguish. Jesus expressed joy.
- 3:21So as a Christian, Christianity is not about becoming emotionally numb,
- 3:27but there's difference between acknowledging what I feel and allowing what I feel to control me.
- 3:34I can say I'm angry without saying, therefore, whatever my anger tells me to do must be right.
- 3:42I can say, um, I'm attracted to this without saying, therefore, this must be God's will.
- 3:52I could say, I'm afraid, without concluding.
- 3:56Therefore, I shouldn't take the step God is asking me to take.
- 4:02Feelings tell us something, but they don't tell us everything.
- 4:06And that's where follow your heart starts getting a little shaky.
- 4:11Here's a biblical perspective. In Jeremiah 17, verse 9, it says,
- 4:17The heart is disciple above all things and beyond cure.
- 4:22Who can understand it?
- 4:24That's a pretty strong warning. Scripture isn't telling us that every feeling,
- 4:30we ever experience is automatically wrong.
- 4:33It's telling us that the human heart has been affected by sin.
- 4:38Our desire can become disordered. Our emotions can get mixed up.
- 4:44We can even convince ourselves that something is right simply because we want it badly enough.
- 4:51Proverbs 14, verse 12 says, there is a way that happens, well,
- 4:56excuse me, there is a way that appears to be right, but in the end, it leads to death.
- 5:02Notice that phrase, appears to be right.
- 5:06That's the scary part. Not everything that leads us away from God looks obviously evil at first.
- 5:13Sometimes it feels right. Sometimes it makes perfect sense.
- 5:17Sometimes everybody around us approves and still it can be the wrong road what
- 5:26Jesus is actually telling us and he's actually saying now compare follow your heart.
- 5:33With the actual invitation of Jesus. So let's dive into Matthew chapter 16, verse 24.
- 5:39Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
- 5:46There it is. Jesus doesn't say, follow your heart. He says, follow me.
- 5:52And sometimes following Jesus means saying no to something my heart desperately wants.
- 5:58That's discipleship. There are moments when my heart says, get even.
- 6:04Jesus says, forgive. My heart says, put yourself first.
- 6:09Jesus says, serve. My heart says, they don't deserve your love.
- 6:14Jesus says, love your enemies.
- 6:18My heart says, stay comfortable. And then Jesus says, take up your cross.
- 6:24If I follow my heart every time, Eventually, my heart and Jesus are going to disagree.
- 6:31And when that happens, somebody has to lead. But God doesn't throw away the heart.
- 6:38Here, here's where I think this gets beautiful. God answers to an unreliable heart.
- 6:46Hmm, let me think I can rephrase that. God answers to an unreliable heart, isn't it?
- 6:53Well, stop having heart. It's transformation.
- 6:58Psalms 51.10, create me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spread within me.
- 7:07David doesn't say, God, help me trust my heart more. No, he says, God, change my heart.
- 7:14And Ezekiel 36.26 gives us this promise.
- 7:20I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you see god cares deeply
- 7:25about our hearts he doesn't always well he just doesn't leave them untouched,
- 7:31he definitely shapes them,
- 7:34he corrects them he softens them and he convicts them and through the holy spirit
- 7:39he begins teaching our desires to look more like this and more like his,
- 7:44so maybe our goal isn't follow your heart Maybe it's give your heart to Jesus and follow him.
- 7:53I'd like to give you a personal perspective.
- 7:56I think this hits me because there have been times when I wanted to do something
- 8:01so badly that I started looking for God to agree with me. You know what I mean, right?
- 8:06Instead of praying, God, what do you want?
- 8:10Sometimes our prayers become, God, here's what I decided. Please bless it.
- 8:15And I've had to catch myself there many times because sometimes I can confuse
- 8:20excitement with confrontation or confirmation for that matter.
- 8:24I can confuse fear with a warning from God and I can confess that,
- 8:28well, what I want with what God wants.
- 8:32And that's why discernment matters.
- 8:35Sometimes I need to slow down and pray.
- 8:38I open up scripture. I talk with people I trust and give God room to tell me no.
- 8:45Because if God can only tell me, yes, I'm not really asking him to lead.
- 8:51I'm asking him to approve. And that one sits a little differently.
- 8:55So how do we live this out? So if we're not supposed to be blindly following
- 9:00our hearts, what do we do with our feelings?
- 9:03Well, first, name them.
- 9:05Don't pretend you don't feel what you feel. God, I'm angry.
- 9:10God, I'm afraid. God, I really want this. God, I am hurt.
- 9:16God can handle honesty.
- 9:18Second, test them. Ask, does this desire to agree with Scripture?
- 9:25Does this move me toward Christ?
- 9:28What kind of fruit will this decision produce?
- 9:32Am I seeking God's will or God's permission for something I've already decided?
- 9:37Third, surrender them. This might be the hardest one.
- 9:41God, this is what I want, but I want you more. And that's a very different prayer.
- 9:47So here's your faith challenge for this week.
- 9:50Before making a decision based purely on how you feel, pause and ask three questions.
- 9:56Number one, what am I feeling?
- 9:58Number two, what does scripture say? And number three, where is Jesus leading me?
- 10:04And if those answers don't line up immediately, don't rush, give God room and pray.
- 10:11Listen, seek wise counsel, open the Bible, because sometimes faith means moving forward.
- 10:19And sometimes faith means waiting until our emotions stop shouting loudly enough
- 10:24for us to hear God's direction. Amen.
- 10:27Heavenly Father, thank you for creating us with hearts that can love,
- 10:32grieve, hope, dream, and feel deeply.
- 10:35But Lord, we confess that our desires don't always lead us toward you.
- 10:39Sometimes we want, well, sometimes we want what isn't good for us.
- 10:44Sometimes fear controls us.
- 10:47Sometimes anger speaks louder than wisdom.
- 10:50Sometimes we decide what we want and then ask you to approve it.
- 10:54Forgive us, create in us clean hearts, shape our desires, renew our minds,
- 11:01give us wisdom to recognize the difference between what feels right and what is right.
- 11:06And when our hearts pull us in one direction while you call us in another,
- 11:11give us courage to follow you.
- 11:14Jesus, we don't want our emotions sitting on the throne of our lives.
- 11:19That place belongs to you.
- 11:22So take our hearts, transform them, teach them, and lead us.
- 11:27In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Well, that's the episodes. I'm hoping that you
- 11:33enjoy it. And this is our takeaway.
- 11:36Should all of us follow their hearts, not blindly, your feelings are real,
- 11:42your emotions matter, your desires are worth paying attention to, I should say.
- 11:48But they were never meant to be your savior. Jesus didn't say,
- 11:53follow your heart. He said, follow me.
- 11:55So here's today's takeaway. Don't follow your heart wherever it wants to go.
- 12:00Give your heart to Jesus and let him teach it where you go.
- 12:04This has been an episode and this has been episode 3 of Jesus Never Said That,
- 12:10and this has been a continuing special series from Have Faith,
- 12:13Let It Begin we still got 7 episodes to go,
- 12:16so remember it sounds good it might even sound Christian but it's actually biblical,
- 12:23before you let a quote shape your life open the Bible and before you let your
- 12:28heart choose the direction.
- 12:30Make sure Jesus is the one leading I'm Angel Santana,
- 12:35and never forget, to have faith, let it begin.
- 12:38Coming up Monday, next episode, episode number four.
- 12:42Next time we're tackling one of the most common things Christians say when somebody is overwhelmed.
- 12:48God won't give you more than you can handle. But wait a minute.
- 12:52What happens when life is more than you can handle? What happens when you're
- 12:56exhausted, when you're overwhelmed, when you reach the point where you have nothing left?
- 13:02Maybe the promise was never that you'd be strong enough to handle everything,
- 13:06And maybe the point is discovering that you were never supposed to handle everything without god,
- 13:12That will be episode four on monday on jesus never said that because it sounds
- 13:19good It might even sound christian, but it's actually biblical have faith.
- 13:23Let it begin. Have a great weekend Yeah.
