- 0:00Speaker 1: Ohio State versus Texas. Game of the year type material, boys.
- 0:05Speaker 1: This is one that I think we've been looking forward
- 0:06Speaker 1: to since week one of last year when these two
- 0:10Speaker 1: teams were going up against each other. Massive, massive matchup
- 0:15Speaker 1: in Austin. This preview presented by PrizePix here on The
- 0:18Speaker 1: Power 2. Let's start with... We'll go road first and
- 0:24Speaker 1: the best conference that was ever created that doesn't have
- 0:28Speaker 1: teams trying to usurp their power over it at this moment.
- 0:31Speaker 2: So Tom, take it away, Tom.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Actually, if we could, I could give Tom one extra
- 0:36Speaker 1: second to do this because that's part of what the
- 0:38Speaker 1: does as well. Go ahead.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Good for the Mac. I love that.
- 0:43Speaker 3: The Mac is trying to get the win because they
- 0:45Speaker 3: absolutely should. What happened in Ann Arbor was BS looking
- 0:49Speaker 3: at this game. That'll take place in Austin, Texas. I
- 0:53Speaker 3: am very, very excited about this game. I think it's
- 0:56Speaker 3: going to feel a lot different than last year's game felt.
- 0:58Speaker 3: You had two first-time starting quarterbacks officially for their individual schools.
- 1:04Speaker 3: It felt like baby deer legs. You felt the offensive
- 1:07Speaker 3: lines trying to figure things out. Not much in terms
- 1:10Speaker 3: of playmaking ability. It felt like a very physical defensive battle,
- 1:13Speaker 3: and that's what the scoreboard reflected. I don't think this
- 1:16Speaker 3: is going to be the complete inverse where you just
- 1:18Speaker 3: see scoring at the yin-yang like we just saw with
- 1:21Speaker 3: Ole Miss and Louisville. but there's going to be an improvement.
- 1:24Speaker 3: I think Julian Sane is a lot more comfortable, and
- 1:26Speaker 3: it seemed like in their opening game that he was
- 1:29Speaker 3: just trying to feed Jeremiah Smith as much as humanly possible. Meanwhile,
- 1:33Speaker 3: Arch Manning, he seems very comfortable with Cam Coleman and
- 1:35Speaker 3: his pieces. It's all going to come down to which
- 1:39Speaker 3: team runs the ball more effectively. Do I expect either
- 1:43Speaker 3: team to go full LSU Clemson in terms of 300
- 1:45Speaker 3: yards rushing? No, I don't think that's the case in
- 1:48Speaker 3: this one. Whichever team is going to be able to
- 1:50Speaker 3: make the opposing quarterback a move his feet, think a
- 1:54Speaker 3: little bit longer than he wants to, is going to
- 1:56Speaker 3: be able to control the defensive game. If they can
- 1:59Speaker 3: prevent the run enough, that's ultimately going to spell doom
- 2:03Speaker 3: for somebody. I don't know which team I really favor
- 2:06Speaker 3: in this. I think by an edge, I give it
- 2:10Speaker 3: to Ohio State because I think I believe in their
- 2:13Speaker 3: pieces in terms of the offensive line more than I
- 2:16Speaker 3: do with Texas. I've said this the entire offseason. Texas
- 2:19Speaker 3: worked on the offensive line, put money into the transfer portal.
- 2:23Speaker 3: We'll have Goosby back, which is great. So I don't
- 2:27Speaker 3: know if I believe as much in what Texas could
- 2:29Speaker 3: be as a rushing attack. I think Hollywood Smothers certainly
- 2:32Speaker 3: changes things for them. But I think I put a
- 2:36Speaker 3: little bit more faith in Ohio State to do that. However,
- 2:40Speaker 3: home field advantage... Arch Manning feeling confident, having weapons. He
- 2:44Speaker 3: certainly looked like he was doing good outside of getting
- 2:46Speaker 3: through the tunnel against Texas State.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Oh, my goodness.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Somewhere in the neighborhood of 27-24 Ohio State, and it's
- 2:56Speaker 3: going to be a really fun game to watch, but
- 2:58Speaker 3: it is going to be physical. It is going to
- 3:00Speaker 3: be tough, and I think it's just going to feel
- 3:02Speaker 3: drastically different than last year.
- 3:04Speaker 4: I see a scenario where this is a high scoring affair,
- 3:06Speaker 4: but the yardage isn't there because of what it is.
- 3:09Speaker 4: It's a few explosive plays on each side. So one
- 3:11Speaker 4: major touchdown 68 yarder by Jeremiah Smith. Then you counter
- 3:15Speaker 4: that with another 45 yard touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I could see something like that being the case. Tom
- 3:20Speaker 2: brought this point. I totally agree with him.
- 3:22Speaker 4: The rushing attack is going to be really important in
- 3:24Speaker 4: this game for both teams. I look at it from
- 3:26Speaker 4: the Ohio State side. Remember that Texas last week gave
- 3:29Speaker 4: up 161 rushing yards to Texas State.
- 3:32Speaker 2: That's not a good number.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Now you have to take that with context since realizing
- 3:35Speaker 4: they couldn't throw the football to save their life and
- 3:38Speaker 4: they ran it 41 times. So naturally, you gave up
- 3:40Speaker 4: that many rushing carries, you're going to get some yards
- 3:43Speaker 4: after contact.
- 3:44Speaker 2: So that's something that I think that you look at.
- 3:46Speaker 4: If you're Texas and say it was against a team
- 3:48Speaker 4: that couldn't throw it against us, Ohio State's going to
- 3:50Speaker 4: be able to throw it against us. Can we slow
- 3:52Speaker 4: down the run? This is a running back room that
- 3:54Speaker 4: I have a lot of belief in. Headlined by Bo Jackson,
- 3:56Speaker 4: but then you throw in Jacoby Jackson. But I also
- 3:58Speaker 4: look at Legend Bay as being a guy that is
- 4:01Speaker 4: a gadget-type player that may only see snaps like on
- 4:05Speaker 4: 10 plays in this game, but those may be 10
- 4:07Speaker 4: of the most important plays for Arthur Smith to be
- 4:09Speaker 4: able to dial on up to keep the ball moving
- 4:11Speaker 4: efficiently and get Ohio State closer into the red zone.
- 4:14Speaker 4: They have an opportunity to really do a nice job
- 4:17Speaker 4: of playing against this front seven for Texas that had
- 4:20Speaker 4: its moments against Texas State, but also is still kind
- 4:22Speaker 4: of gelling together. If they can establish the run early,
- 4:25Speaker 4: it's a massive win, I think, for Ohio State in
- 4:27Speaker 4: that standpoint. From the flip side with Texas, they can
- 4:31Speaker 4: run the football better than last season. I think that
- 4:33Speaker 4: you feel better about Relique Brown and Hollywood Smothers in
- 4:35Speaker 4: your backfield. You still have your concerns, and it's largely
- 4:39Speaker 4: because you didn't see them do it more efficiently in
- 4:42Speaker 4: that matchup against Texas State. They were able to run it,
- 4:44Speaker 4: but they didn't run it at an elite level of
- 4:46Speaker 4: where you saw Ohio State do against Ball State. It's
- 4:50Speaker 4: Ball State versus Texas State, so a little different in competition.
- 4:53Speaker 4: What do you also get from the mobility of Arch Manning?
- 4:55Speaker 4: One of the biggest things that we know about Arch
- 4:57Speaker 4: Manning is he is going to tuck and run. He
- 4:59Speaker 4: is not afraid to go ahead and utilize his legs.
- 5:01Speaker 2: You didn't see that last game. I think that was
- 5:03Speaker 2: on purpose. It was by design.
- 5:05Speaker 4: So do you get more efficiency with Arch second and six,
- 5:09Speaker 4: running forward for a first down and sliding once he
- 5:11Speaker 4: gets to the line of scrimmage just to keep the
- 5:13Speaker 4: ball moving? That's something that I think could be a
- 5:15Speaker 4: major tone setter for Texas. What I look at as
- 5:17Speaker 4: the key element in this game, though, for both sides
- 5:20Speaker 4: is not the rushing attack. I look at not even
- 5:22Speaker 4: the wide receiver number one. I look at wide receiver two.
- 5:26Speaker 4: I look at who is going to be the guy
- 5:28Speaker 4: that can go on open opposite of Jeremiah Smith or
- 5:32Speaker 4: Cam Coleman.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Hey, guys, I'll get right back to the clip of
- 5:34Speaker 1: the Power 2 here on College Football Addiction. But first,
- 5:36Speaker 1: we picked all these more or less options on our
- 5:40Speaker 1: live show, the Power 2. You can go check out
- 5:41Speaker 1: that full episode over on College Football Addiction. Make sure, one,
- 5:45Speaker 1: you are subscribed here on the channel affiliates or the
- 5:48Speaker 1: College Football Addiction channel. Also, make sure you're over there
- 5:50Speaker 1: with prize picks on the app. Play a $ 5 lineup.
- 5:53Speaker 1: New users who do that with the code HMA will
- 5:56Speaker 1: get $ 150 in lineups if they win. I've heard from
- 5:58Speaker 1: several of you who've already done this. A lot of
- 6:00Speaker 1: fun lines this week. Go check them out. We appreciate
- 6:02Speaker 1: PricePix for their support. I took the more in just
- 6:05Speaker 1: about everything. I got the less in Arch Manning's total,
- 6:08Speaker 1: but go check out the PricePix app. We appreciate them
- 6:10Speaker 1: for their support.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Is it going to be Devin McCune, the UTSA transfer?
- 6:14Speaker 4: Is it going to be Ryan Wingo? Because you know
- 6:16Speaker 4: that there's going to be an elite matchup on either sideline,
- 6:19Speaker 4: a Bo Masco versus Jeremiah Smith. And then you got
- 6:21Speaker 4: Devin Sanchez going up against Cam Coleman. That's going to
- 6:24Speaker 4: be locked down cinematic. When you see that highlight grab,
- 6:27Speaker 4: it's going to SportsCenter. Like, you know that's coming. Who's
- 6:31Speaker 4: the other guy that steps on up? Who's the guy
- 6:33Speaker 4: that can win the battle on the opposing side that
- 6:34Speaker 4: allows you to be able to move the football with
- 6:37Speaker 4: ease against two defenses that have question marks, but still,
- 6:42Speaker 4: they don't retool. They reload every single offseason. That's what
- 6:46Speaker 4: they do, and you have faith in them. So that's
- 6:49Speaker 4: going to be a really interesting matchup in that standpoint.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Who can win inside the red zone? Who can go
- 6:54Speaker 4: ahead and close out drives and not settle for three points?
- 6:56Speaker 4: Another thing that you'd be looking at in this game.
- 6:58Speaker 4: This has the opportunity for... everyone to kind of put
- 7:02Speaker 4: themselves in a position of we're the team to beat
- 7:06Speaker 4: in college football. And I want to throw this at
- 7:08Speaker 4: your guys to say, who needs this win more?
- 7:11Speaker 2: Is it Texas or is it Ohio State?
- 7:12Speaker 4: Because I would argue Texas and Ohio State, regardless of
- 7:16Speaker 4: how you feel about either one of these teams, SEC,
- 7:18Speaker 4: you're an SEC homer. Oh, you're a Big Ten brat,
- 7:21Speaker 4: whatever it is. Texas and Ohio State have the two
- 7:25Speaker 4: toughest schedules in college football this year. So a win
- 7:27Speaker 4: in this game has a lot of stakes on the
- 7:30Speaker 4: line of guaranteeing your spot in the playoff.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I think it's more important for Texas.
- 7:34Speaker 3: I agree.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I agree. For several reasons. One, I think Texas' schedule
- 7:41Speaker 1: is slightly tougher. Number two, I think I have a
- 7:45Speaker 1: little more confidence in Ohio State, and that's probably just
- 7:47Speaker 1: some brand bias, some roster bias, because we've seen them
- 7:50Speaker 1: get there and do it before. I think Texas' schedule, again,
- 7:54Speaker 1: a little bit tougher. You lost last year. you're playing
- 7:57Speaker 1: at home. Like every way that I look at this,
- 8:01Speaker 1: it is not massive. Like I'm not, man, Texas is
- 8:04Speaker 1: out if they lose this game. No, I'm not doing
- 8:06Speaker 1: that for either one of these. Now you go lose
- 8:08Speaker 1: like Clemson did. Maybe I will. But yeah, I, I
- 8:11Speaker 1: don't think it's like if one of these two teams loses, I'm,
- 8:14Speaker 1: but yeah, if I'm picking who it's a little more
- 8:16Speaker 1: important for every category that I look at, it's Texas.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I don't even know what the argument for it being
- 8:25Speaker 1: Ohio State would necessarily be. Not that it's not important
- 8:29Speaker 1: to them, but like every single thing, it's on the road.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Their schedule, I have a little more confidence with Ohio
- 8:35Speaker 1: State against their schedule. You won last year, so if
- 8:38Speaker 1: you split it overall, your fans kind of understand that.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Obviously everybody wants to win, but yeah, I think this
- 8:43Speaker 1: is a massive opportunity for Texas. We have, we give
- 8:45Speaker 1: Ohio state and to their credit, we give Ohio state
- 8:48Speaker 1: the benefit of the doubt because they do win these
- 8:50Speaker 1: games consistently. So if they drop one, nobody's jumping off
- 8:55Speaker 1: the bandwagon, right? Like you understand like mid tough game
- 8:57Speaker 1: down in Austin, they've got some playmakers. We've got some playmakers.
- 9:00Speaker 1: We lost a close game. For Texas, does the narrative
- 9:04Speaker 1: after this game, which we did week one overreactions already,
- 9:07Speaker 1: but does the narrative after this game become, man, are
- 9:09Speaker 1: they ever going to win the big one? Are they
- 9:10Speaker 1: ever going to be able to tell? What's happening here?
- 9:13Speaker 1: And so, yeah, I think it's massively important for Texas.
- 9:16Speaker 1: It's important for both teams, but I think it's more
- 9:19Speaker 1: important for the Longhorns.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Well, when was the last time we saw Steve Sarkeesian
- 9:22Speaker 4: win a big game? Now, I'm not saying that Steve
- 9:24Speaker 4: Sarkeesian is not a winner because he is a winner.
- 9:26Speaker 4: There's a giant difference between the two. The last time
- 9:29Speaker 4: they won a big game, they were in the Big
- 9:30Speaker 4: 12 going up against Alabama. Yeah.
- 9:33Speaker 2: That's it.
- 9:34Speaker 4: They've lost to Georgia every time they played them. They
- 9:37Speaker 4: lost last season to Ohio State on the road. They
- 9:39Speaker 4: lost to Florida, which, again.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I'll throw out there that's disgusting. But they lost those games.
- 9:45Speaker 1: You could count them. See, they beat A & M
- 9:47Speaker 1: last year, but we all kind of knew A &
- 9:49Speaker 1: M was frauds by that point, right?
- 9:51Speaker 3: Didn't they make it into the playoff a few years ago? Yeah.
- 9:55Speaker 4: And they went down to the wire in double overtime
- 9:57Speaker 4: against an Arizona state team and they beat a Clemson
- 10:00Speaker 4: team that got lucky by has a game winning field goal.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Are we not constituting those as big games? They're playoff.
- 10:06Speaker 3: I don't make, I don't mean to make you Dan Orlovsky,
- 10:08Speaker 3: but those are big games, period. I agree.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Okay.
- 10:10Speaker 1: So here's the point. If I can, let's split the
- 10:12Speaker 1: baby on this. Okay. Those are, those are big games.
- 10:15Speaker 1: When's the last time they won a game that they
- 10:17Speaker 1: weren't expected to win?
- 10:19Speaker 4: Sure.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Like A & M.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Like the A & M one. I would put it
- 10:21Speaker 1: in that same category. A & M was a great win,
- 10:24Speaker 1: but we all kind of knew A & M was fraud.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Sure.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Right? So, yeah, they took Mateer. Mateer's hurt. And they
- 10:31Speaker 1: beat Oklahoma, who went to the playoff.
- 10:32Speaker 3: But like.
- 10:33Speaker 1: there's some context that's provided with it. You beat Arizona state.
- 10:36Speaker 1: You nearly blew it. You gave up a, you know, you,
- 10:39Speaker 1: you played Clemson way closer than you should have. So
- 10:41Speaker 1: those are big games. But again, I think there's a
- 10:43Speaker 1: difference in a big game and a, if they'd a
- 10:47Speaker 1: loss to, you don't, you can't say you're a 14
- 10:50Speaker 1: point favorite against Arizona state and Clemson and give them
- 10:52Speaker 1: credit for playing those teams closer.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Than they did.
- 10:55Speaker 1: So I think it's, it's, it's six, one half does.
- 10:57Speaker 3: It's kind of, I understand that point. I think for
- 10:59Speaker 3: this game in particular, Texas has more to prove. And
- 11:03Speaker 3: it's not that Ohio State doesn't have something to prove,
- 11:05Speaker 3: but Ohio State at least has recent track record in
- 11:07Speaker 3: terms of the national championship. They got past Texas, in fact,
- 11:11Speaker 3: on their way to winning that national championship. But Ohio State,
- 11:14Speaker 3: it's not that they return a better roster necessarily. We've
- 11:18Speaker 3: talked about how much they lost in the NFL draft.
- 11:19Speaker 3: It's just you have more faith in what Ryan Day
- 11:22Speaker 3: and this program is capable of year over year. And
- 11:24Speaker 3: you believe probably a little bit more, and this is
- 11:27Speaker 3: by increments, that Ohio State has a better chance to
- 11:30Speaker 3: win a national title than Texas. Texas can prove to
- 11:33Speaker 3: people early in week two that, hey, we can win
- 11:37Speaker 3: a national championship, and it would change the conversation. Would
- 11:40Speaker 3: a loss for either one of these teams knock them
- 11:42Speaker 3: out of the playoff? They both have very difficult in-conference
- 11:46Speaker 3: schedules the remainder of the way, so you have no
- 11:48Speaker 3: idea how the dominoes are going to fall with this thing.
- 11:51Speaker 3: But I think at least from a proof standpoint, from
- 11:54Speaker 3: a momentum, a confidence standpoint, Texas needs this. Both teams
- 11:58Speaker 3: need it, but Texas could use it a little bit more.
- 12:01Speaker 4: No, Texas needs this because Texas needs to show that
- 12:03Speaker 4: with the identity that they have in place, it's good
- 12:05Speaker 4: enough to win at the highest level.
- 12:07Speaker 2: That's what they need to do.
- 12:08Speaker 4: Because again, whether or not we say it's fair, Steve
- 12:10Speaker 4: Sarkeesian is the offensive play caller. One thing that people
- 12:13Speaker 4: have been arguing is that Steve Sarkeesian needs to relinquish
- 12:15Speaker 4: the play calling rights and just be the CEO of
- 12:17Speaker 4: a team.
- 12:18Speaker 2: He doesn't want to do that.
- 12:19Speaker 4: Okay, so now you got to win the biggest games
- 12:21Speaker 4: to prove that you are in the conversation of it's
- 12:23Speaker 4: not being too big for you. I agree with Tom
- 12:26Speaker 4: that this is a bigger game for Texas. I also
- 12:28Speaker 4: think that Texas right now has a few things that
- 12:30Speaker 4: you trust a little bit more than Ohio State. Maybe
- 12:32Speaker 4: it's not at every single position. Certainly not a wide receiver.
- 12:36Speaker 4: I'd go so far to say maybe not even a quarterback,
- 12:38Speaker 4: but I would definitely say that when you look at
- 12:40Speaker 4: that defensive front, I don't know if Ohio State has
- 12:43Speaker 4: a Colin Simmons that's coming off of the edge. And
- 12:44Speaker 4: with an offensive line that does have its question marks
- 12:46Speaker 4: going into this game, which we won't know about because
- 12:49Speaker 4: it's Ball State. I'm not saying that Ohio State's offensive
- 12:51Speaker 4: line can't look elite by the time they play Michigan
- 12:54Speaker 4: at the season's end.
- 12:55Speaker 2: But against Ball State, you're still going through the learning curve.
- 12:58Speaker 4: I see a scenario to where you can easily say,
- 13:01Speaker 4: if Texas' defensive front can get after Julian Sane, they
- 13:04Speaker 4: should be the team that's favored in this game, not
- 13:06Speaker 4: because they're the home environment matchup.
