- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It's a Monday, it is the 3rd of
- 0:16June and I'm so glad you've tapped on play and invited me in
- 0:20to join you in your day. Hope you're doing well.
- 0:22Hope the week ahead is looking like a good one for you because
- 0:25it is going to be a good one because well, you and I have the
- 0:29opportunity of sitting down together if you're running or
- 0:32doing something active. Excuse me as I don't join you
- 0:35because I'm sitting down right now, but we might spend some
- 0:38time together in whatever posture we are reading through
- 0:41the book of Ecclesiastes. And this week we're gonna read
- 0:45up to Ecclesiastes chapter 6. Poor old people, poor old
- 0:49scholars, they have struggled all through the history of
- 0:53interpretation of this book to try and work out some kind of
- 0:56theme or structure. And everyone has a different
- 0:58opinion. But generally the only thing
- 1:00that people can agree on is that the 1st 6 chapters really seem
- 1:04to be struggling with the question of is there any benefit
- 1:08for all of the hard work and striving that we seek to do
- 1:11under the sun? Where does our true prophet
- 1:14actually lie? So that's what the teacher, the
- 1:18Koheleth, will be struggling with as we join him this
- 1:21weekend. Well, I'm sure we've all thought
- 1:24these thoughts and pondered these deep ponderings at times
- 1:27in our lives. So here he's going to put words
- 1:30to them as related together. In fact, he's going to put some
- 1:34very, very familiar words to this.
- 1:37The beginning of this chapter is one that you will all know I
- 1:42don't might be reminiscent of certain periods in your life
- 1:45when you've heard these words. So let's read together
- 1:48Ecclesiastes chapter 3. For everything there is a
- 2:02season, a time for every activity under heaven, a time to
- 2:07be born and a time to die. The time to plant and a time to
- 2:13harvest. A time to kill and a time to
- 2:17heal. A time to tear down and a time
- 2:21to build up. A time to cry and a time to
- 2:25laugh. A time to grieve and a time to
- 2:29dance. A time to scatter stones and a
- 2:33time to gather stones. A time to embrace and a time to
- 2:38turn away. A time to search and a time for
- 2:42quiet searching. A time to keep and a time to
- 2:46throw away. A time to tear and a time to
- 2:50mend. A time to be quiet and a time to
- 2:54speak. A time to love and a time to
- 2:58hate. A time for war and a time for
- 3:02peace. What do people really get for
- 3:06all their hard work? I've seen the burden God has
- 3:10placed on us all, yet God has made everything beautiful for
- 3:15its own time. He has planted eternity in the
- 3:19human heart. But Even so, people cannot see
- 3:22the whole scope of God's work from beginning to end.
- 3:25So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and
- 3:30enjoy ourselves as long as we can.
- 3:32And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their
- 3:35labour, for these are gifts from God.
- 3:39And I know that whatever God does, His final nothing can be
- 3:43added to it or taken from it. God's purpose is that people
- 3:47should fear Him. What is happening now has
- 3:51happened before, and what will happen in the future has
- 3:54happened before because God makes the same things happen
- 3:58over and over again. I also noticed that under the
- 4:03sun there is evil in the courtroom, yes even the courts
- 4:07of Laura. Corrupt, I said to myself.
- 4:10In due season, God will judge everyone, both good and bad, for
- 4:15all their deeds. I also thought about the human
- 4:18condition, how God proves to people that they are like
- 4:22animals, for people and animals share the same fate.
- 4:26Both breathe and both must die, so people have no real advantage
- 4:31over the animals. How meaningless.
- 4:35Both go to the same place. They came from dust, and they
- 4:38returned to dust. For who can prove that the human
- 4:42spirit goes up, and the spirit of an animal goes down into the
- 4:45earth? So I saw that there is nothing
- 4:48better for people than to be happy in their work.
- 4:51That is our lot in life and no one can bring us back to see
- 4:55what happens after we die. Our Lord, you are so much bigger
- 5:09than we are. Your attention and all that you
- 5:14are aware of stretches eternally both behind and before us.
- 5:20And here we are with our little perspectives, unable to see
- 5:23beyond the end of our nose often.
- 5:28Jesus, may we look to you each step of each day, that as we go
- 5:35through all the different seasons of our lives, with all
- 5:37these different times, that we would day by day work for your
- 5:43glory and celebrate your gifts. And that in itself is enough to
- 5:49serve you and to be loved by you.
- 5:53Thank you for the simplicity of that and the gift of that, that
- 5:58you take the burden of being God from our shoulders.
- 6:01We don't need to be God. We just need to serve our God
- 6:04and be loved by our God. And so that is what we do.
- 6:11Holy Spirit, give us the wisdom and the strength to do that
- 6:13today as we go about all the things that we will undergo and
- 6:18come across. And we pray all of this in the
- 6:21saving name of Jesus. Ah, man.
