- 0:00Welcome to Frontline Static, we will get to hear interviews with
- 0:02some of my clients journeys of getting into flight and how they
- 0:05utilize coaching to help them create success of getting hired
- 0:08with less confusion and more ease.
- 0:10Make your dream a reality of getting into flight.
- 0:12Listen in as you hear some of the stories of the people
- 0:14getting there and come join the Flight Prep group.
- 0:17Hey you guys, welcome to episode 126 of how to become a Flight
- 0:21nurse. I'm titling this episode belief
- 0:24flight plan. Before I continue on talking to
- 0:27you about what I want to bring you this week, I just want to
- 0:30make sure that you guys took a listen to last week's episode
- 0:34125 where I got to interview Skyler who is part of the flight
- 0:38prep Academy. She has just such a great story,
- 0:43so take a listen if you haven't listened to it already.
- 0:47She came from a rural bed, ER, just 10 beds, worked part time
- 0:53for three years and got hired on with the flight company that she
- 0:57wanted to get hired on with. And she's going to be able to be
- 1:01transferred to the base that's closer to her home in the next 6
- 1:04months. And I, what I especially love
- 1:07about her story, and I think that we touched on it and in the
- 1:11interview, was that they just had to ask her one question, one
- 1:18psychosocial question. And that was tell me about
- 1:20yourself. And she was so good at
- 1:24articulating who she was, what she valued, the team player that
- 1:27she was, that they didn't need to ask her any other questions.
- 1:30And she did so well that they wanted to offer her the position
- 1:33directly after the interview, but wanted to kind of wait and
- 1:38give her the 24 hours so that she could squirm a little bit
- 1:42about the position. But what I also hope that you
- 1:46picked up on that is that she said that was a lot easier than
- 1:50I thought. And that's the complete opposite
- 1:53of most people that I work with or who come to me and who want
- 1:56help with the interviews. They say the flight interviews
- 1:58are nothing like what I thought. They're so hard.
- 2:01And so I just want to offer you guys to come get coaching, come
- 2:08find out what the Flight Prep Academy can do for you so that
- 2:10when you show up in your very first flight interview, you can
- 2:14convey exactly who you are, what you value, the team player you
- 2:17are, and you can leave that interview thinking.
- 2:20That was a lot easier than I thought.
- 2:22And that's the level of confidence that I can provide
- 2:24for you in my process and in my program.
- 2:26OK. One thing that I want to start
- 2:29with today as I want to talk about a belief flight plan and
- 2:33creating that. This is kind of been a
- 2:35discussion and ongoing thing that I coach on inside the
- 2:37Flight Prep Academy and I'm always wanting to bring you
- 2:39topics that I know are relevant and that a lot of the people
- 2:42inside my programs are dealing with.
- 2:47One for an extension for the people who are currently working
- 2:50with me to elaborate more on what we're coaching on.
- 2:53And then two or so for those of you guys who aren't inside my
- 2:56program to get a little bit of value from that as well.
- 2:59And hopefully it can help you along in your process.
- 3:02And hopefully you will come and join us so that you can get the
- 3:05full picture and the full five step process of getting to
- 3:07flight with the support. But one thing that I felt like I
- 3:11wanted to mention before we got started as well is I in the 6
- 3:171/2, seven years that I flew, I trained a lot of new flight
- 3:22medics and a lot of new flight nurses and they got there and
- 3:25they got hired. But a lot of them didn't make it
- 3:28through orientation. And it wasn't about time and
- 3:31experience that didn't have that.
- 3:33They obviously that they didn't make it through because they got
- 3:38hired, but it was because they didn't have the mindset and they
- 3:43let the doubt and the fear overcome them while they learn
- 3:46to learn new skills, new protocols, a new job, be a
- 3:51beginner again. And they failed out because of
- 3:55the mindset and the doubt and the fear taking over them.
- 3:58And so one thing that I told the Flight Prep Academy group this
- 4:01week in our weekly coaching call was that everything, all the
- 4:05fears, all of the weaknesses that are coming up for you
- 4:09before flight will be magnified 10X after getting hired.
- 4:13So if you can work through them now, if you can develop the
- 4:16tools and see them now instead of ignoring them, then once you
- 4:20get hired in a flight, when those weaknesses become
- 4:23magnified, when the doubts become magnified, you will have
- 4:27the exact tools in your tool belt to take out, utilize and
- 4:34help you to create success. Once those are 10X magnified.
- 4:39And, and I just want to reiterate that everything that
- 4:44you are facing now is going to be what you're going to face as
- 4:49a flight nurse. And it might be at a different
- 4:51level and again, it might be magnified.
- 4:53But if you can learn how to navigate this now for yourself,
- 4:57then that's what creates a successful flight nurse
- 5:00afterwards. Because being coming a flight
- 5:02nurse will require you to become a whole different person.
- 5:05It will require you to create all new beliefs about yourself.
- 5:08So that's what we're going to talk about today is a belief
- 5:10flight plan. I want to start out with the
- 5:15question, what are your thoughts of getting into flight early?
- 5:23OK, when I say early before the three years, my coach, my
- 5:28mindset coach offered that to me this week when she was talking
- 5:31about a goal that I'd set for myself for this year.
- 5:34She didn't say what are your thoughts of getting to the goal?
- 5:37She said, what are your thoughts of getting to the goal early?
- 5:40When you add the early to the end, it flushes out a lot of
- 5:45more thoughts and a lot more doubts.
- 5:48And so normally I ask this question of what are your
- 5:50thoughts of getting to flight and rate it one out of 10.
- 5:54But I'm going to ask this a little bit differently.
- 5:56If you were under the three years, if you're over the three
- 5:58years, what are your thoughts of getting to flight 1 out of 10/1?
- 6:01Being I don't feel confident at all.
- 6:04There's no way 10 being I got this no matter what, no matter
- 6:07how long it takes, no matter what I got to do.
- 6:09If you are under the three years, I want to offer you this
- 6:12sentence. What are your thoughts of
- 6:14getting to flight early? One out of 10 early meaning
- 6:18before the three years. There is a reason why I've
- 6:21helped people get hired at the one year, 2 year, 2 1/2 years
- 6:27prior to the three years prior to the requirements.
- 6:29And it is simply this. It is because they have the
- 6:33belief in themselves and when they believe it, the companies
- 6:37and the flight crews will too. So it starts with you.
- 6:41And so I want you to rate this one out of 10/1 being I don't
- 6:45feel confident at all 10 being I got this no matter what, where
- 6:49are you? And then I want you to think
- 6:51about if it is less than a 10, tell me why.
- 6:55Write down all the reasons why your brain is offering you that
- 7:02it's not possible. Here are the common ones that I
- 7:04hear. I don't have enough time and
- 7:06experience. I don't know enough.
- 7:09I'm not smart enough. I don't know if this is what I
- 7:12really want. And all of these are normal
- 7:15thoughts, but we need to flush them out so that we can see them
- 7:18instead of ignoring them and that we can create thoughts and
- 7:23beliefs that we can answer our brain back.
- 7:25The key to success for anybody is what goes on between your two
- 7:28ears. It it's like the powerful
- 7:33thoughts and beliefs that you can create for yourself inside
- 7:36your head. Our thoughts and our brain can
- 7:40be our worst enemy. And, and all of you guys I know
- 7:43have experienced this. And so really getting to flight
- 7:46is yes, about strategy. And I teach you the strategy
- 7:49inside my programs, but it also is about what are the and
- 7:52beliefs that you create for yourself because you can know
- 7:55the strategy and the beliefs can't be there.
- 7:58And that's going to stop you every time or that's going to
- 8:00get you hired. But have you fail out of
- 8:01orientation? And I know also a lot of you
- 8:04guys are just thinking about getting hired in a flat and
- 8:07getting an offer. What's more important is
- 8:10transitioning confidently into the role because that's where I
- 8:13saw a lot of people fail out. So when you come to work with
- 8:17me, I am really talking to you about who's the future.
- 8:20You already as a flight nurse, what are the beliefs that you've
- 8:22created about yourself so that when you do get that offer,
- 8:25you're already able to be that person.
- 8:28You know who that person is. You've been living that person,
- 8:31so becoming her or him is easier and that's why you transition
- 8:35more confidently. OK, so flesh out why you are not
- 8:41a 10. What are all the thoughts that
- 8:43are holding you back from being a 10?
- 8:45And this is the next question that I want to offer you to
- 8:49navigate this. What are the beliefs you will
- 8:52have to get you, you have to have about yourself to get into
- 8:55flight. And my coach said to me this
- 8:59week this and I want to share with you because this is so
- 9:01powerful as well your current brain that you have right now,
- 9:05your current brain and thoughts are not the ones that will get
- 9:08you there. OK, I'm going to repeat that.
- 9:11Your current brain and thoughts are not the ones that will get
- 9:15you there because your brain will try to base it on past
- 9:19experiences. It will tell you, well, I've
- 9:21never done this before, so how can I be thinking that?
- 9:23How can I believe, be believing that the brain of the future you
- 9:27who has already got there and her thoughts and her beliefs,
- 9:31those are the ones that are going to get you there.
- 9:33So if you're trying to muster up from your current brain
- 9:36thoughts, that's going to be hard.
- 9:38We have to spend time with the future you.
- 9:41We have to spend time with the you who has already gotten into
- 9:44flight, who has already arrived, who has gotten the offer, who
- 9:47has transitioned into the role. So if we go to her, him and you
- 9:52as a flight nurse or flight paramedic and that one who's
- 9:55already transitioned in the role, clocking into your shift
- 9:57everyday, working with your team of three, getting on that
- 10:00helicopter and completing your missions and your calls, what is
- 10:06that person thinking and believing about you?
- 10:13What does that person believe about their patient care?
- 10:16What does that person believe about their critical thinking
- 10:19skills? What does that person believe
- 10:21about how they handle critical patients?
- 10:24Write all of those things down. Some examples might be I'm
- 10:29capable. I'm going to always figure this
- 10:32out no matter how hard it gets. I got me and my team's got me.
- 10:38I will trust myself in hard situations.
- 10:41I know how to navigate hard situations.
- 10:44I know how to adapt, overcome and continue to evaluate and do
- 10:48that for my patient and my team. What are all those thoughts that
- 10:53the future flight nurse is thinking on a daily basis when
- 10:56they're clocking in? Write those all down.
- 10:59This becomes your belief flight plan.
- 11:04I'm giving you the strategy. Map out your plan.
- 11:06Start doing ride alongs, making connections with flight
- 11:08companies and prep confidently for flight interviews.
- 11:10That's the strategy to get to flight.
- 11:12That's it. And notice in there, there's
- 11:13nothing about time and experience.
- 11:15That's how I'm getting people hired at the 1-2 year, 2 1/2
- 11:18year mark. What will get you there is your
- 11:21belief flight plan. So write down all of these
- 11:24beliefs and thoughts that you as a flight nurse or flight
- 11:27paramedic are thinking about yourself, your critical thinking
- 11:30skills, how you deal with critical patients, your patient
- 11:34care. I'm going to write all those
- 11:36down. This is who you want to become
- 11:39today. The quicker you can get on board
- 11:42with this belief flight plan and believing this about yourself,
- 11:45the quicker you will get there. When you believe it, like
- 11:48companies will believe it too. You will be able to convey it
- 11:51easier. You won't pull back, you'll push
- 11:53forward, forward. What happens when you don't
- 11:56believe in yourself is you pull back.
- 11:58You have thoughts of I'm I'm being annoying.
- 12:00I don't want to pester to them. I don't want to bother them.
- 12:03But when you have a belief plan and you believe those thoughts,
- 12:06you're playing out 100%. I know this, I see this.
- 12:10When you believe it, you give it your all.
- 12:13When you don't believe it, you pull back and you, you silently
- 12:16have those thoughts. I'm being annoying, I'm
- 12:18pestering them, I'm being too much.
- 12:21And you always want to be putting your your your best foot
- 12:26forward. So in this belief flight plan,
- 12:30these are thoughts now that you want to take and you want to
- 12:33practice every day. So when your brain offers you,
- 12:36I'm not good enough, you offer it back.
- 12:39I'm going to figure it out and I can do hard things because
- 12:42that's what the flight nurse you is thinking.
- 12:44And then you want to take this belief, flight plan, all these
- 12:47beliefs that you know that you're going to be thinking as
- 12:49that future flight nurse. And you want to apply this to
- 12:51every shift that you go into. So now you're going into your
- 12:55shifts in critical care, whether it's ERICU, you're thinking,
- 12:58hey, if I'm not flight nurse, what am I thinking?
- 13:01What am I believing about each and every one of these
- 13:03situations? And what you will find and what
- 13:05people in my group now are finding is the more you practice
- 13:09that, the more you become that person to stepping into that
- 13:13interview. And then once you get into that
- 13:15interview, you just already believe you're meant for it.
- 13:17You already believe you're doing it because you have been doing
- 13:20it and you have been practicing it.
- 13:22It will be quicker the more you believe in you others being
- 13:27flight companies, your mentors and coaches that are helping you
- 13:29get there and the process. So I'm going to say this again,
- 13:33it's a triple threat with these three things.
- 13:35It will be quicker you getting to flight the more you believe
- 13:38in, one, you two other people, which includes companies or your
- 13:42mentors and coaches helping you get there.
- 13:44And three, the process, which means the strategy that you take
- 13:48to get there. So I'm going to talk about each
- 13:49of those for just a second. First one, believing in you.
- 13:54That means believing in your capability to do hard things.
- 13:58What are the thoughts that help you do that and create belief in
- 14:01you? You've wrote some of those down,
- 14:03probably on your belief flight plan, but I'm going to offer you
- 14:05a couple that I think are really useful for me and might be
- 14:09useful for you too. I am capable.
- 14:12I know that this sounds so simple, but I have to tell
- 14:15myself this a lot. I am capable, I am smart, I can
- 14:20figure it out. The second thing is your belief
- 14:23in others, which includes the companies, which means believe
- 14:27in them as an entity, that they value what you value.
- 14:31I see a lot of nurses not believing in the company that
- 14:36they work for. And I think that this is really
- 14:39key in creating beliefs for yourself and creating success is
- 14:42believing in the company that you're going to be working for,
- 14:45Believing in flight. Companies in general believe
- 14:48that what they value is what you value.
- 14:52And then the second part of this is believing others is believing
- 14:55in your mentors and your coach, trusting them to guide you in
- 14:59the right direction. Whether it's inside my program
- 15:02or you have another mentor, you have another coach, I highly,
- 15:05highly, highly advise having one.
- 15:07That's what I has created a lot of success for me.
- 15:10That's what helps you level up. That's what also helps you see
- 15:14your own crap and not be afraid to call it out because they're
- 15:17maybe not your closest friend or family member and want to just
- 15:21give it to you nicely. And they're also the person
- 15:24that's going to help you overcome obstacles, prevent you
- 15:27from having obstacles and making mistakes that they know you will
- 15:31make. So prevent those mistakes ahead
- 15:34of time. So the second part is believing
- 15:38in others, the company that you, the company, the fight companies
- 15:41and the mentor and coach, trusting them to guide you in
- 15:43the right direction, that the plan that they have given before
- 15:49you is the one that's going to get you there and believing in
- 15:53that plan. OK, the third part is, and I've
- 15:56alluded to this a little bit, I mean, I'm not believing in the
- 15:59plan, but believing in the coach and the mentor.
- 16:01The third part is believing in the plan, which is the process
- 16:03you want to believe in you, one of you want to believe in
- 16:06others, the flight companies and your mentors.
- 16:08And the third part is you want to believe in the process.
- 16:10And this is a plan you have made for yourself to get there, or
- 16:14this is a plan that your mentors and coaches have helped you
- 16:16create and develop to to get there.
- 16:19You need to believe in the process.
- 16:21Because if you don't believe in the process, you don't commit to
- 16:23the process. You're going to be all over the
- 16:25place. You're going to be stuck.
- 16:27You're going to be wavering. You're going to be not
- 16:34committing. You're going to be undecided.
- 16:36Commit to the process and the plan that you have made or your
- 16:40coaches have made for you to get there.
- 16:43When all these things come together, something magical
- 16:47happens. You become the person who can
- 16:50work for any company, on any aircraft, with any pilot and any
- 16:55team. But it has to start with belief
- 16:58in yourself. This is the key to all three of
- 17:01these other things. It's start and that's why I list
- 17:03you first. Your belief flight plan is the
- 17:06key 1st one example that I want to give to you is that the
- 17:11company that I flew for had this opportunity and I I don't know,
- 17:14this might be true for other flight companies.
- 17:15I'm not sure just because I only worked for one.
- 17:18But when there was like a national disaster, they would
- 17:24call out any clinicians who would be willing to work
- 17:27overtime to fly with any team pilot aircraft to how help like
- 17:36mitigate the situation or take patients in and out of a
- 17:39hospital to another hospital or whatever was needed for critical
- 17:41patients and movement of hospitals or getting patients
- 17:45from the areas and taking them to a higher level of care.
- 17:49And I remember there was lots of times in my career of flying
- 17:53where there were national disasters, hurricanes, floods,
- 17:57things like that. And I always volunteered to be a
- 18:00part of those teams. If they were, we were never
- 18:03called or I was never called out or needed.
- 18:06But I felt like I could do that because I had a high confidence
- 18:13that no matter who I worked with, no matter what aircraft I
- 18:17stepped in, if it was even an airframe I've never been in, and
- 18:20no matter what pilot or team I had, we would confidently get
- 18:25the job done. And I could only feel that way
- 18:29because I trusted me. I believed in me.
- 18:33I believed in my capability. And I took that into a lot of
- 18:36situations because there will be times that maybe your partner or
- 18:41someone you wouldn't hang out with outside of work, maybe
- 18:43they're not someone that exactly you guys share the same values.
- 18:49But what's really important is that you become the person that
- 18:53is workable and is easy and adaptable with any partner, any
- 18:59pilot, any aircraft, in any situation.
- 19:02And when you learn to believe in yourself and have that deep
- 19:05level of trust, then your circumstances no longer matter.
- 19:09I just hear so many people, even outside of flight, be like, I
- 19:12can't do this job because my manager is terrible.
- 19:14I can't do this job because the hospital's terrible.
- 19:18And while all those things might be true, when you become the
- 19:22person who believes in themselves, circumstances don't
- 19:26matter. And in flight, this becomes
- 19:31really important because you have to constantly be dynamic.
- 19:35You have to constantly be adaptable.
- 19:37Your patient might change. The treatment plan might not go
- 19:43as planned. Once, twice, three times.
- 19:46Your situation might change. You might get a patient and then
- 19:48weather comes in and then you got a ground six hours.
- 19:52No matter what, you got to get the patient there.
- 19:54You might have to switch aircraft three times I to do
- 19:56that 11 call and so you have to become the person who believes
- 20:02in the outcome, who believes that you will give the best
- 20:06patient care and that comes with these three beliefs starts with
- 20:11belief in yourself, belief in others, the company, your
- 20:14mentors or coaches and belief in the process that you have
- 20:17created for yourself and I really.
- 20:21Knew that I could take me in any situation and I trusted my gut
- 20:26and my intuition to lead and guide me in situations that the
- 20:29answers might not be clear. And I created this by creating a
- 20:32deep belief in myself. And this doesn't mean that I
- 20:35didn't have doubt or fear. I I had doubt and fear on every
- 20:37call that I ran. But this just means that I'm
- 20:41always taking me with me. And that's the level of belief
- 20:45that you want to start to create for yourself now as soon as you
- 20:48want flight. I want to end with saying I'm
- 20:53hearing more and more from people that listen to this
- 20:56podcast that they've been listening every week, which I
- 21:00love because in the last three months, I've been trying to make
- 21:03weekly content that I really think is relevant and will help
- 21:06you. And if you found value in
- 21:08listening to this podcast every week, I want to invite you to
- 21:12come get continuous support, coaching and community and get
- 21:17the full value of the five step process of getting into flight
- 21:20inside the Flight Hyper Academy. Imagine what will be possible
- 21:24for you when you get the whole five step process with the
- 21:26continue to support and you have the opportunity to tap into it
- 21:30any day, any time of the week. And you can see the member
- 21:33portal whenever you want to get access as well.
- 21:36This will make a difference. And so I want to offer if you
- 21:39found value in listening to it weekly, come get even more value
- 21:43so that you can put the pieces together.

- 22:39So that's great. I want to offer you if you're

- 23:37flight Prep Academy and establishing that program.
- 23:40And that's not going anywhere. That is going to continue, but
- 23:44I'm ready to do general life coaching for healthcare workers
- 23:48and any first responder. I want to open up these tools of
- 23:52coaching to this entity of people.
- 23:55I feel like we are a our own breed.
- 23:59There's things that we see, things that we do that the other
- 24:05people don't understand. And for a long time, I let that
- 24:09mean a lot about me. And I felt myself pulling away
- 24:15and I felt my relationships diminishing.
- 24:17And there were really hard calls where there was weeks and months
- 24:20where I just secluded myself. And once I found coaching, I
- 24:26learned the tools that really helped me build confidence both
- 24:30on and off the job. I was super confident on the
- 24:32job, but when I left the job and I came home, I felt like my home
- 24:34life was entitled in or I felt like I couldn't unwind, if that
- 24:41makes sense. And I felt myself pulling back
- 24:45from relationships and people. And I'm creating this new
- 24:49healthcare worker and 1st responder group that includes
- 24:52anybody in those classifications.
- 24:55And I'm going to give you more information on that as time
- 24:58comes. But that offer and group is
- 25:00going to be opening up for enrollment next month in
- 25:03November. If you have been following me
- 25:05and you want to create more confidence both on and off the
- 25:10job and learn also how to create big things in your life, stay
- 25:13tuned, Join my e-mail list and be the first one to know when
- 25:18open enrollment opens next month in November.
