- 0:00Speaker 1: If you're listening to the show last week, you would
- 0:02Speaker 1: have heard me talking about footy. You would have heard
- 0:04Speaker 1: me talking about the hockey nationals that were happening here
- 0:07Speaker 1: in Darwin. You would have heard me speaking about the
- 0:09Speaker 1: netball nationals that were happening in Darwin. But you would
- 0:12Speaker 1: have definitely heard me speaking about a young Territorian who
- 0:16Speaker 1: was away at the Australian Age Swimming Championships who absolutely
- 0:22Speaker 1: smashed it, did a phenomenal job while she was interstate.
- 0:26Speaker 1: And joining me in the studio right now is that
- 0:30Speaker 1: young Territorian. Her name is Macy Sheridan. Good morning to you, Mazie,
- 0:35Speaker 1: and a very good morning to coach Tim Fu. Good
- 0:38Speaker 1: morning to you. Now, you guys are from the Darwin
- 0:41Speaker 1: buff Swimming Club, a phenomenal swimming club.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I know because my kids are there as well.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Now, Macy, I was keeping an eye on you while
- 0:50Speaker 1: you're away for the Australian Age Swimming Championships and you
- 0:54Speaker 1: performed unbelievably well.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Now tell everybody how old are you at the moment.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I'm thirteen, so swimming in the thirteen year's age group.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Now you competed in eight events, didn't you. Now can
- 1:08Speaker 1: you talk me through the eight events that you were
- 1:10Speaker 1: in and how you went in all of those.
- 1:13Speaker 3: So I did fifty three, one hundred free and two
- 1:17Speaker 3: hundred three YEP. For the fifty one hundred, I got gold,
- 1:22Speaker 3: and for backstroke I did the fifty hundred and two
- 1:25Speaker 3: hundred and for all three of those I got gold,
- 1:28Speaker 3: and then I did the two hundred, Am.
- 1:31Speaker 1: You are a little legend. How are you feeling? Were
- 1:34Speaker 1: you pretty excited? Yeah?
- 1:36Speaker 3: I was pretty excited, mixed with nerves as well.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I bet you were, because it's pretty luck.
- 1:41Speaker 1: It is actually pretty daunting for any swimmer going away
- 1:44Speaker 1: to the Nationals. But then when you line up for
- 1:46Speaker 1: a final and you know they go through all the swimmers,
- 1:49Speaker 1: everybody has to step forward as they call your name out,
- 1:52Speaker 1: and you knowing that you were the fastest qualifier as
- 1:55Speaker 1: well in some of those races.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Was there much pressure on you.
- 1:58Speaker 1: To sort of do well or did you just try
- 1:59Speaker 1: to rely and take it all in your stride.
- 2:02Speaker 3: I just try to relax because if I start thinking
- 2:04Speaker 3: about pressure, then it'll all just become very overwhelming. Yeah,
- 2:07Speaker 3: So I just like remain calm for as long as
- 2:10Speaker 3: they could.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Absolutely, And you did amazingly. I mean the fact that
- 2:15Speaker 1: you've won, you won those medals, six national age titles for.
- 2:19Speaker 2: A thirteen year old, it's incredible stuff.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And you then, obviously with some of those times, you've
- 2:26Speaker 1: not only broken Northern Territory records, but like for your
- 2:28Speaker 1: fifty meters backstroke twenty nine fifty nine. Now, to those
- 2:33Speaker 1: out there listening, that's bloody fast. For those who don't
- 2:37Speaker 1: swim that aren't sure, that is incredibly fast and it
- 2:41Speaker 1: means that well, it's the fifth fastest time by an
- 2:44Speaker 1: Australian thirteen year old girl and the first territory and
- 2:47Speaker 1: female ever to break the thirty second barrier.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like, all feels pretty surreal. So I haven't
- 2:55Speaker 3: come to terms that, oh, I've actually done that. So
- 2:58Speaker 3: I just still trying to process all what's happened in
- 3:00Speaker 3: the past few weeks.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And you must feel good though, knowing that you've liked
- 3:04Speaker 1: that you've done some really good times, because I know
- 3:06Speaker 1: that that's something that we always talk about, is like
- 3:08Speaker 1: breaking those pbs, just doing the best that you can do,
- 3:12Speaker 1: your personal best.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Yeah, a few of those times I really wasn't expecting
- 3:17Speaker 3: to get like I'd get a great PV in the
- 3:19Speaker 3: heats and then the finals. I just blew myself away.
- 3:23Speaker 3: So a few of those times I'd look up on
- 3:24Speaker 3: the board and I'd be quite shocked.
- 3:27Speaker 1: How awesome, Tim, What was it like for you? I mean,
- 3:30Speaker 1: you had an incredible young squad going away for this event.
- 3:34Speaker 1: How many swimmers did you have in the squad?
- 3:37Speaker 4: We had seven go away altogether. There were three girls,
- 3:40Speaker 4: four boys. Now, Macy did forget one of her events.
- 3:43Speaker 4: She did forget to mention the fifty butterfly, which he
- 3:46Speaker 4: did win golden as well, and that actually puts her
- 3:49Speaker 4: as a third fastest thirteen year old female in history
- 3:52Speaker 4: that time.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Goodness me, third fastest ever.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Yeah, that's incredible.
- 4:01Speaker 4: But as a team as a whole, top twenty ranked
- 4:05Speaker 4: swimmers get points. So overall, with all the clubs that
- 4:09Speaker 4: were in attendance, we finished fiftieth on point score. So
- 4:13Speaker 4: to put a perception, it's some of the teams that
- 4:15Speaker 4: were around us had somewhere oddard of twenty one swimmers,
- 4:19Speaker 4: and we had Measley seven. So we had seven in
- 4:24Speaker 4: the age and then we had two older swimmers in
- 4:26Speaker 4: the open that round last week, so out of the
- 4:29Speaker 4: nine we had four who made finals. We had four
- 4:34Speaker 4: of them who finished in the top ten and certain
- 4:36Speaker 4: events in their ages, and then we had seven of
- 4:39Speaker 4: the nine who finished top twenty in certain events throughout
- 4:41Speaker 4: their ages.
- 4:42Speaker 2: It's awesome stuff.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I just think it's wonderful because you know, it's one
- 4:45Speaker 1: thing to just have one swimmer going away and performing
- 4:49Speaker 1: incredibly well like Macy has done. But it's a whole
- 4:51Speaker 1: other than to have an incredible squad and that real
- 4:55Speaker 1: depth within the swimming club. At the moment, you must
- 4:58Speaker 1: be feeling pretty good as the coach team.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Yeah, it's more now trying to build towards the next
- 5:05Speaker 4: major competition. So we've got a bunch of kids who
- 5:07Speaker 4: are looking at going away to the School Sports Championships
- 5:10Speaker 4: in August, and then we've got four who have qualified,
- 5:13Speaker 4: three have confirmed, one I'm still waiting on to go
- 5:16Speaker 4: to the World Championship Trials in June. So Macy has
- 5:20Speaker 4: put her hand up to go down to that one. Awesome,
- 5:23Speaker 4: So she's going to try and go toe to toe
- 5:25Speaker 4: with a one hundred backshow world record holder. So we'll
- 5:28Speaker 4: see how that one goes.
- 5:29Speaker 1: And what an incredible experience for you as well. You know,
- 5:32Speaker 1: no matter what, it's just such a great thing to
- 5:34Speaker 1: be able to travel away and to get to do
- 5:36Speaker 1: that and to have that experience.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Yeah, mainly just like experience. As you said, I don't
- 5:44Speaker 3: really mind what I get out of it, just being there.
- 5:46Speaker 3: It's just a privilege in herself.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I bet oh.
- 5:50Speaker 1: I tell you what you guys are. You've done awesomely
- 5:52Speaker 1: and so humble as well.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Macy.
- 5:54Speaker 1: You know I like you, and you know I said
- 5:57Speaker 1: this to your mum when I asked if you could
- 5:58Speaker 1: come on. It's not I think it's really important to
- 6:01Speaker 1: actually to make sure that we sing from the rooftops
- 6:04Speaker 1: when our kids do well, when children around the Northern
- 6:07Speaker 1: Territory are doing really well at sport or whatever you're
- 6:09Speaker 1: doing well at, because it is an incredible thing to
- 6:13Speaker 1: be able to do from the territory. Sometimes people think, oh, yeah,
- 6:16Speaker 1: you know, it only happens if you live in Brisbane
- 6:18Speaker 1: or if you live somewhere else. But we've got some
- 6:19Speaker 1: wonderful young territorians Tim you get to interact with them
- 6:23Speaker 1: every day.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Yes, it is mate. What's next for the club?
- 6:31Speaker 4: Look, we've got some things in the pipework. We're trying
- 6:34Speaker 4: to build a new clubroom. We're just waiting for plans
- 6:36Speaker 4: to be designed. We've also got some so we've actually
- 6:39Speaker 4: got the Southport Olympic Swimming Club, their performance team are
- 6:42Speaker 4: actually up and down this week doing a training camp
- 6:45Speaker 4: out of prep next month. We've actually got Peter Bishop
- 6:48Speaker 4: and his South Australian guys coming up, so the likes
- 6:52Speaker 4: of Kyle Charmers and some of those big names coming
- 6:55Speaker 4: up for a training camp. But for us as a club,
- 6:58Speaker 4: the next it's just going to the next meet, So
- 7:01Speaker 4: we're actually running our club short course meet at the
- 7:03Speaker 4: beginning of next month and then it's just trying to
- 7:06Speaker 4: get these four or three depends how many go off
- 7:09Speaker 4: to the World Championship Trials and see what happens there,
- 7:13Speaker 4: and then it's building onto the short course season, then
- 7:16Speaker 4: into Queens Aunde State Championships in December and then Nationals
- 7:19Speaker 4: come around April next year ends.
- 7:22Speaker 1: And you know, for our listeners, I guess to get
- 7:25Speaker 1: a bit of an understanding it does take a lot
- 7:27Speaker 1: of training and a lot of effort for our young
- 7:30Speaker 1: people to get to the point that Macy has reached.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Like it's a lot of hard work for us whom
- 7:35Speaker 1: are like Macy isn't Ash.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Yeah, so Macy's been doing successions a week in the
- 7:39Speaker 4: pool since October yep or just before. She'll have to
- 7:44Speaker 4: see now what we do pool wise, because she's also
- 7:47Speaker 4: very good at athletics, and her athletics coach wants her
- 7:50Speaker 4: back at.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Some point, Roger, if you're listening, but he can.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Have Bronte for now.
- 7:57Speaker 2: So it is.
- 7:58Speaker 4: And like most of our open goal and one of
- 8:00Speaker 4: our distance swimmers there in the water nine times a week,
- 8:03Speaker 4: got three two to three gym sessions a week, so
- 8:07Speaker 4: some long hours that they have to spend putting the
- 8:09Speaker 4: work in, but unfortunately that's the nature of the sport.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Well and well and truly worth it.
- 8:14Speaker 1: You know, when you get to go away and you
- 8:15Speaker 1: line up and you swim really well and you do
- 8:18Speaker 1: those pbs and in Macy's case, when you walk away
- 8:21Speaker 1: with a swag of medals, it's worth the hard work,
- 8:23Speaker 1: isn't it.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just the feeling of like accomplishment and like
- 8:27Speaker 3: all the train that's led up to that, you just
- 8:29Speaker 3: feel like it's like worth something.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it really is.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Well, good on you both, Thank you so much, and
- 8:35Speaker 1: a big congratulations to all of the swimmers that went
- 8:37Speaker 1: away for both the Australian Age and also the Open
- 8:40Speaker 1: Australian Championships last week. Macy, biggest congratulations to you with
- 8:45Speaker 1: all those medals. You've done incredibly well and I think
- 8:47Speaker 1: the whole club, everybody around the Northern Territory should be
- 8:50Speaker 1: really proud of your efforts, but also of the whole
- 8:53Speaker 1: dar and buff Siming club.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Great effort. Tim, thank you a problem. Good on you both.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Thanks so much for your time this morning.
