- 1:10over it. I, I, I just, I'm so excited to
- 1:13celebrate your 30th birthday. Hopefully you don't throw up
- 1:16because every single year in the last three years I've taken, I
- 1:22have taken you out. Oh, wait a second.
- 1:24One of the years on my birthday, you were hiding in the bathroom
- 1:27because you were claiming no, you had the runs I.
- 1:30Yes, I did have the. Runs.
- 1:31No, you were. You weren't throwing up.
- 1:33No, I wouldn't. I wouldn't have kept dancing if
- 1:35I if I was throwing up. Speedy, you weren't dancing
- 1:38after that, you went. To that other club in Patchogue
- 1:41after that and I was dancing. Dude, I don't remember.
- 1:43Dancing Speedy What's your drink of choice on your birthday?
- 1:46Well, that a beer. Well, I had.
- 1:49Beer, I had beer there. There were other what was the
- 1:51other drinks that we had the the the first time with the the the
- 1:53pineapple stuff was what was that the?
- 1:56The Apple stuff. Yeah, I don't remember the name
- 1:59of it. At Fire Island was a rocket
- 2:01something that we had a Fire Island, those other.
- 2:02Years rocket fuels. Yeah, yeah, it must have been
- 2:04those that got something and along with the the wings like
- 2:07the. Wings and you were throwing up
- 2:08all over it was. Yeah, that was 2022, that was.
- 2:11A rock. I had to, you know, I was trying
- 2:13for one second. I told him to go to the to go go
- 2:16to the garbage and barf in the garbage because I saw it in his
- 2:18face and he was like standing at the table.
- 2:20I'm like go to the garbage. By the time he went to the
- 2:22garbage, he was throwing up all over the place, and I mean all
- 2:26over the place. You're talking about security.
- 2:29Then I had somebody come up to me, one of the security guards
- 2:31that is a friend of mine actually came up to me and told
- 2:33me, Yo, is your, your friend Hawking that girl over there?
- 2:37She came up to me and said that he, he was up, he was like
- 2:41abusing her or like it was very threatening.
- 2:45I was like, what was threatening about it?
- 2:47I didn't see anything. Well, she said that he was like
- 2:49up on her face, like bothering us since she said hello.
- 2:53And when he said hello, I mean, I was weird.
- 2:55I, I, I didn't know what to say and I didn't see it.
- 2:57And I, I was trying to protect speedy as I always do, because,
- 3:01you know, he's like a little brother.
- 3:03He's like the little engine that could or couldn't.
- 3:05Well, we're trying to put some, you know, oil in that edge.
- 3:09And so he could start rocking and jocking, if you know what.
- 3:11I mean, yeah, that's that's what Nathan's goal is in his.
- 3:13Life. Well, it's everybody's goal.
- 3:14I would like to see you, you know, sit on somebody's face,
- 3:17you know? Yeah, that's never going to
- 3:18happen with you around. Well, wouldn't.
- 3:20It be. Wouldn't it be the other way
- 3:21around? No, sweetie.
- 3:23Sweetie needs to learn how you know first.
- 3:25He's got to learn that way before he learns the other way.
- 3:27If you know. I'm not learning anything from
- 3:29people that you've brainwashed. I'm not braining.
- 3:31I'm not braining. I'm not brainwashing anybody.
- 3:34By the way, I almost said Dante Beau Bichette actually just hit
- 3:39a two run home run. So I think the Yankees are
- 3:41starting to say, Louis, take me away, Speedy, you want to sing
- 3:47that song? No, that's a happy.
- 3:49Birthday Nathan has to sing for my birthday.
- 3:51That's all of. That Nathan can.
- 3:53I would love to hear Nathan sing and actually say this.
- 3:56That's. My I need a gin and tonic.
- 3:59That would be cool Gin tonic. Watch.
- 4:01Watch him come out and sing and be like.
- 4:02Super super. That is how I want the song to
- 4:04finish. I need a gin and tonic.
- 4:06That is actually literally how I want the song to finish.
- 4:08Lick it and stick it. As he always does, he licks.
- 4:11Everything he sticks. I request Nathan to finish the
- 4:13song with the gin and tonic. Ball bag.
- 4:15Speedy's ball bag Speedy, How big is your ball bag?
- 4:17No. I.
- 4:19Don't. Are you cocking or you're
- 4:21doodling? I don't know.
- 4:22We need to work on getting Tootsie roll fruities as.
- 4:25Fruities and Tootsie, by the way, Java.
- 4:28Speaking of sponsor. It was funny.
- 4:30I don't know if you saw the video before they had the So the
- 4:33Browns were unveiling a new helmet.
- 4:35By the way, one guy. Speedy, do you have a helmet?
- 4:37The dude, the dude fell off and then dude wipes.
- 4:40Yep. So you deleted it.
- 4:41Yeah, dude, dude wipes. As long as she's using dude
- 4:44wipes and taking care of my 2 hole.
- 4:45I'm just saying that that guy said he had a lot of dude wipes.
- 4:48Speedy, do you have a do you have a little helmet or is it
- 4:51not circumcised? I have.
- 4:53I had a set of the NFL helmets as when I was a kid.
- 4:56No, but is it circumcised or do you have a little helmet?
- 4:58Oh, what do you what do you think I.
- 5:00I had the little collection of the NFL helmets.
- 5:02As a no, but is it circumcised or I don't know.
- 5:05So you don't know if you have a little helmet?
- 5:07Not with me, ladies. I bet those little helmet, I bet
- 5:16those little helmets are worth something these days.
- 5:18Well, I'm not talking about that little helmet.
- 5:21Well, I was trying to change the subject.
- 5:25No, you're getting. You're eating your Tootsie roll.
- 5:27You're your blueberry Tootsie Roll.
- 5:31No, no, it's there's blue Raspberry.
- 5:33I can't show the green one because it won't show up.
- 5:36I Oh God, I. Try to show the green one.
- 5:39I like Tootsie rolls, but I can't eat them in different
- 5:42colors. I have to eat them in chocolate.
- 5:43That and I I you ever go to you ever go to a gym and Planet
- 5:48Fitness one of them? I don't go to Planet Fitness
- 5:50anymore. But when when you go to Planet
- 5:52Fitness, they have Tootsie rolls when you walk in.
- 5:54Has anybody seen that? And they have pizza night on
- 5:57Mondays. Like you're a gym and you're
- 5:59selling, you're giving away pizza to make people fat.
- 6:03I mean, if that must be even either the worst, the worst
- 6:08advertisement or the best, depending on if you're bringing
- 6:10in people, bringing in more people because they're fat to
- 6:14your gym. I don't know, cardio.
- 6:16Stay away from that pizza, ladies and gentlemen.
- 6:18But they have Tootsie rolls all the time.
- 6:20Every time I would leave I'd grab like 8 or 9 Tootsie rolls
- 6:23and I'd I'd put them in my car and thank God I didn't leave
- 6:26them in my cup holder because if it was summertime it would have
- 6:28been melted like. Oh, those are melted.
- 6:30That have been gross. Absolutely too gross as hell.
- 6:33All right, ladies and gentlemen, it's been waiting commonly and
- 6:35carefully as he always does. We are now talking to our 2nd
- 6:39guest. Well, we didn't have a first
- 6:40guest because he accidentally had something to do at the last
- 6:44minute. So we have our 2nd guest and
- 6:47we're now talking to 11 year MLB catcher Jimmy Lawrence.
- 6:51Jimmy, what's up? What's happening fellas?
- 6:54How we doing? We're good, man.
- 6:55You look good, man. I, I will say this.
- 6:58The last time I saw you, I said you look the same you did when
- 7:02you played for the Yankees in the 90s.
- 7:04You look good, man. You look like you're in shape.
- 7:06You're taking good care of yourself.
- 7:08You're in probably better shape now than you did when you did
- 7:11play. Well, yeah, I don't drink as
- 7:13hard as I did when I played. Well, I really appreciate,
- 7:20obviously you giving us the time.
- 7:22You're a busy guy. The last time you were on our
- 7:24show, you were in a you were at a playoff game.
- 7:27You were at the Yankees playoff game if I'm not mistaken, it was
- 7:29against Cleveland. Kansas City, KS City.
- 7:32I remember that well because the the 1st guest we had on that day
- 7:35was the Savannah Bandana coach Adam Vyrant, who's a big Royals
- 7:38fan and he said he was at the previous game.
- 7:40Then you were the selected guest actually at the game.
- 7:43And we we had a lot of conversations about obviously
- 7:46the Yankees and what the Yankees have to do to get through to the
- 7:49next round. And you were pretty much on
- 7:52point on where the Yankees were in the playoffs, especially
- 7:56against Kansas City. So my question here to you is
- 8:00I'm watching the Yankees right now.
- 8:01It's absolutely putrid. I have watched terrible defense
- 8:06after terrible defense all season long.
- 8:09You have a guy that Anthony Volpe who was two years ago, he
- 8:13was side what was I'm sorry, not go glove winner, great defensive
- 8:18player and now all of a sudden he went from a great defensive
- 8:21player to one of the worst defensive players in the MLB.
- 8:24Statistics would show you ERA wise and the guy couldn't hit a
- 8:28broad right. What did they call it the broad
- 8:30side of a barn outside of the barn.
- 8:33Yes, as we've heard, what is going on with the Yankees?
- 8:37What's going on with some of the youngsters that they've had over
- 8:40the last couple of years? And why are the Yankees one of
- 8:43the worst defensive teams in the first half in all of baseball?
- 8:46That is the answer we're all looking for right now.
- 8:50It's reared its head just recently more than it has all
- 8:53season. I couldn't tell you the answer.
- 8:55One of the things I will say is we've been saying it for the
- 8:59last five years about this team. They are the worst fundamental
- 9:03team that I've ever seen. And I'm not talking just
- 9:08fielding, but also running the bases, knowing how to play the
- 9:12game. It's just they've gone so Saber
- 9:17metric that it's it's these guys just don't know how to play the
- 9:21game anymore. So again, who gets the bulk of
- 9:24the the responsibility for that? They were debating on Monday
- 9:27whether it should be an Aaron Boone thing.
- 9:28Is it a prospect prospect development thing?
- 9:31I know the Yankees been criticized for that in the past,
- 9:33too. Brian Cashman criticizing the
- 9:34analytics department. Where do you think the
- 9:36accountability comes from with that?
- 9:39I think Jabba can speak to that. I mean, Jabba was there when all
- 9:42this shit started, you know, and when they when they had all
- 9:46these new ideas and everything else happening and you know, the
- 9:49bottom line, by the way, hey, Jabba, what's going on?
- 9:53But you know, for me, it starts in the minor leagues.
- 9:59And over the last five years, from what I've been told is
- 10:04there's one minor league coach, Shelley Duncan, who has any
- 10:10Major League experience in the entire minor league
- 10:14organization. That wasn't like it when we were
- 10:16playing. You know what, when I was
- 10:18playing, I had Clete Boyer, Ron Guidry, Hoyt Wilhelm, I mean
- 10:23Frank Howard. You had some names that really
- 10:27taught you. Buck Showalter was, even though
- 10:29he wasn't a big leaguer, he was a lifetime Yankee minor league
- 10:34guy stuck behind Don Mattingly. And he taught us what it meant
- 10:38to be, but also taught us how to play the game.
- 10:42And unfortunately, I think what you're seeing is you're seeing
- 10:45all these young kids coming up that just don't know how to play
- 10:49the game anymore. I I think it's a nail on the
- 10:53head too. I think it's just not not how to
- 10:56play the game, but knowing how to play it.
- 10:58And like, yeah, now everybody looks at launching and looks the
- 11:01other stuff. But you bring up a great point
- 11:03of of having the knoweth all to like as if words fundamentally
- 11:07sound like yes, it's not sexy, but you know, runner on 2nd no
- 11:11outs. I don't care if you flap one
- 11:14over here to the right side, you do your job.
- 11:16It doesn't look sexy. But no, the game have some feel.
- 11:19And that's that's the thing where it's like you're looking
- 11:22at all these numbers and that's like, you know, when Joe came
- 11:25in, he had Joe's book and it was all the analytical stuff and all
- 11:28these other things. It's like you got to watch the
- 11:30product. I mean, you got to watch in the
- 11:33flow and how the game is going. And I just, I don't think
- 11:37there's enough of that anymore. And I think it all starts in the
- 11:40minor leagues because now they're all taught like, OK,
- 11:43what, what is your horizontal and vertical like drop?
- 11:46What's your spin rate? It's like, I don't care if I'm
- 11:49getting outs. Do I really need to worry about
- 11:51anything else? Like at the end of the day, if I
- 11:56get now, would could Jamie Moyer play right now?
- 12:01Well, according to the favorite metric people know, I say yes.
- 12:04100%. Right.
- 12:06Yeah. Like that, that are literally
- 12:09would we have the Dustin Pedroias, would we have?
- 12:13I mean, there's so many we can name where that's like, it
- 12:16doesn't stand off at you because they don't have spin rates, they
- 12:19don't have this. But you know what?
- 12:21They're grinders. They know how to play the game.
- 12:23They lay bunts down, they get runners over, they make routine
- 12:26plays like and it's just, it's what?
- 12:28Job you played you played with Derek Jeter.
- 12:30I mean Jeter didn't you didn't have to tell Derek Jeter in a
- 12:35late in the game. If there's a man on 2nd with
- 12:37less than you know, with nobody out, guess what he's going to
- 12:42bunt for a base hit. He's still trying to get a hit,
- 12:45but he's still butting for a base hit to get the runner over
- 12:48late in the game. And I mean, listen, I, I, I
- 12:52don't, you hear a bunch of stuff.
- 12:54I'm at the stadium every night. I don't, I don't interact with
- 12:57the players at all. They don't let us do that
- 13:00anymore. Steinbrenner would be the first
- 13:02one to walk you into the locker room and say go talk to so and
- 13:05so right now, you if I don't, it's not just me.
- 13:09Any former Yankee, unless you're the Derek Jeter's or the
- 13:12Mariano's or the CC, they're not going to let you anywhere near
- 13:16that clubhouse for these kids to learn something because they
- 13:21don't want to hear. Well, this is what we would do.
- 13:24This is how we played. This is how we did it.
- 13:27And guess what? That's the last time the Yankees
- 13:29won championships. You know, it's, it's, it's one
- 13:33of those things that you know, Anthony Volpe all winter long, I
- 13:38was down in Tampa for the fantasy camps in in November and
- 13:41January and he was working out at the complex and he was
- 13:45working. I hit the ball the other way and
- 13:47he was doing all these things. He was going to improve.
- 13:50He starts to season off, He's on fire.
- 13:53He's hitting the ball all over the place.
- 13:56From what I was told, again, I don't know this, I'm not saying
- 14:00I know this for sure, but from what I was told was that there
- 14:04was a game, there was a runner on 2nd, nobody out.
- 14:08He hit a ground ball to the right side of the infield, move
- 14:11the runner over. And he was chastised by this
- 14:14sabermetric people saying, what are you doing?
- 14:17You're supposed to be hitting home runs in that situation.
- 14:20And all of a sudden, he started going back to this home run
- 14:23swing, and his average went from 270 to 210 now.
- 14:28And he can't find himself again. And it's now carrying it over
- 14:33into the infield to where before when his defense was so good,
- 14:38both sides of his game right now.
- 14:40And I think it's more, I think it's more mental than anything
- 14:43else. We are talking to 11 year MLB
- 14:46catcher Jim Lawrence. He played for the Yankees for a
- 14:49very long time, played from 1990 to 2000, including nine years
- 14:53with the Yankees. It's incredible to see this
- 14:56guy's career. I remember him in 95.
- 14:58I remember him all those years, especially when the Yankees were
- 15:03starting that dominant run all the way in the 90s, which they
- 15:07were to me as good A-Team built in the 90s as any Yankee team.
- 15:12When you compare some of the great Yankee teams, the Mickey
- 15:14Mantels, the Roger Maris's, the DiMaggio teams, even the Babe
- 15:18Ruth teams, I think the 90 Yankees are definitely
- 15:20comparable to all those teams. You know, Jimmy, we, we look at
- 15:24obviously what Aaron Judge is doing right now, it's, it's
- 15:27unbelievable. It's sensational.
- 15:29Watching a guy that came into the league at 24 years old,
- 15:33nobody realized how special he was except the Yankees.
- 15:37And then he became A5 tool player.
- 15:39He's played out of position. Last year, the first error he
- 15:42even had was in the World Series, which was a big one.
- 15:45And then you look what type of hitter he's become.
- 15:49He went from a power hitter and considered not a batting average
- 15:53hitter to a batting average hitter, a career 300 hitter with
- 15:57the power and the quick the quickest to 350 home runs.
- 16:02When you look at Aaron Judge and you look at the great Yankees,
- 16:04when you're when he's done, and I know he has a lot more base to
- 16:07go, is he going to be compared to the Mickey Mantle's, the Joe
- 16:11Dimaggio's, the Babe roots? Or is he going to be compared to
- 16:14the Derek Cheaters, the Mariano Rivera's of the world?
- 16:18Where would you consider Aaron Judge and what does he have to
- 16:21do to be considered Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio or Mickey Mantle?
- 16:27The only way you get the tally of a Yankee legend, he's going
- 16:32to be a legend because of the numbers that he puts up in the
- 16:35book in the during the season. But Job will tell you, you don't
- 16:39win in the postseason. They don't remember you.
- 16:43It's been probably the biggest Achilles heel for Don Mattingly
- 16:47and the Hall of Fame because Donnie never got to the World
- 16:51Series, never won a World Series.
- 16:54Aaron Judge, if he does not win a championship, I don't care how
- 17:00great. New York will never consider him
- 17:03that that in on that level. And I think that's it.
- 17:07I think that's like his Achilles heel right now has been the
- 17:10postseason. And until he can get past that.
- 17:16Jabba, you played with him a rod.
- 17:19How many years was everybody called a rod the biggest choke
- 17:22artist in the postseason? And then all of a sudden 2009 he
- 17:27has a good postseason and all of a sudden now he's he's always
- 17:31still a rod. He's a rod, you know.
- 17:33Yeah, it just takes one year, Doesn't matter.
- 17:36Exactly. Yeah, it just takes one.
- 17:38And once you get that off your back, it's it.
- 17:41I guess you can take a deep breath.
- 17:43I mean, obviously for those other guys, they've they've
- 17:45obviously had more of them. And you know how that feels.
- 17:48And it's just, you know, if if you don't get there, will he go?
- 17:51Will he be remembered as a great Yankee?
- 17:54Yes, but to be considered a legend and to be like the names
- 17:57that you mentioned, Ariel, if you don't win it, just like we
- 18:01remember names like Jerry Hairston who had a big stolen
- 18:04base force in O9, Damacio Marte, who wasn't who should have been
- 18:07the MVPI mean he didn't give up a hit in the playoffs.
- 18:10And like guys like you remember because they won.
- 18:14Phil Cokes of the world, like I mean Alfredo Osevis, names you
- 18:18would never remember, but it's because they won and they're
- 18:21forever be, you know, remembered in that.
- 18:24So will he go down as one one of the greats?
- 18:27Because I think he's got a good 5-6 good years in him.
- 18:31How long we'll be able to play the outfield for that that's to
- 18:34be seen. But if you don't win it, it's it
- 18:37definitely changes the moniker of what stature you're on.
- 18:41Will what if he if he doesn't win, is he going in Monument
- 18:45Park? Hell no.
- 18:46Well, that's one of the reasons I'm on your show tonight.
- 18:49Listen, I hit a big home run in 1995, walk off against Seattle,
- 18:53second game of the playoffs. We went up two games and none.
- 18:57It was Don Matto in his first time in the postseason.
- 19:00We we thought we would win that series.
- 19:01And last by the. Way, exactly.
- 19:04And, and go on and we end up losing the series and that home
- 19:08run just became a footnote. And then 96, I hit that home run
- 19:13and it just tied the game up, but it swung the momentum and we
- 19:17end up winning. And that home run became so big
- 19:21because we won. And that was the difference
- 19:25because we won. Aaron Boone would have the
- 19:28greatest home run in all of Yankee history had the Yankees
- 19:32won the 2003 World Series. But they didn't.
- 19:37So it's still a great home run, but it's not remembered if, if
- 19:41you remember, Andy Chavez for the Mets made a tremendous
- 19:45catch, which would have been gone down and they didn't win.
- 19:48So it's just another great catch in world history that you have
- 19:53to win. And I think that's the whole
- 19:55thing. I think Aaron Judge, in order to
- 19:57be remembered as a great Yankee, not just a great player, but a
- 20:03great Yankee, you have to win a couple championships.
- 20:06So I want to go to a guy that's been a kind of a polarizing
- 20:09topic on our show. Errol doesn't like him, Jabba
- 20:11likes him. Jazz Chisholm, he's put up good
- 20:13numbers at the plate, but he said some some crazy antics as
- 20:16well. Where do you stand on the Jazz
- 20:17Chisholm experiment so far for the Yankees?
- 20:21You know what? It's so funny because I, I
- 20:24listen to people all the time. I'm one of those guys that says,
- 20:27OK, you know what? I'm old school.
- 20:30I don't like it. But guess what?
- 20:33I don't play in this era. And for some reason this entire
- 20:38era wants all this stuff. They like the pitch clock, which
- 20:44I would hate Jabba. He would hate the pitch clock.
- 20:48Yeah, I, I don't like, like the disengagements of like being
- 20:52able to hold well. And it sucks too, because that
- 20:54takes away me playing the chess game of holding and holding and
- 20:58holding. And OK, now I got to step off
- 21:00and now it's already hard enough to pitch, but now I got to
- 21:03think, OK, did I disengage once or twice?
- 21:05Did I pick over? Did I step off?
- 21:07And so it's just I, I, the time wise, it wouldn't bother me
- 21:12because I'd like to work quick anyways.
- 21:14But as far as like playing the game of on the mound, holding
- 21:17runners, looking and now in the back of your mind, you got to
- 21:19look out of the corner of your eye and be like, oh, I better
- 21:21get rid of this. I mean, a great pitch at 32 and
- 21:24you, you end up walking the guy on a pitch clock.
- 21:26No, I'd be pissed. Yeah, so, yeah, So my point is,
- 21:29yes, is, is is Jazz Chisholm my cup of tea.
- 21:32Well, he's wearing #13 so I do like that, OK.
- 21:36But no, it's he's not your traditional type of Yankee
- 21:42player. But there isn't those.
- 21:44We got beards now. I mean, Jabba, would you have
- 21:47not loved to have a beard as a Yankee?
- 21:49Yeah, I mean, obviously it wouldn't be this big, but, but
- 21:54yeah, I mean, I just necessarily not, not so much, but it's just
- 21:58like everyday like being told and scolded, like I'm a kid,
- 22:02like I'm a grown man. Like I'll keep it professional.
- 22:06But like getting kicked out of the dugout and like getting told
- 22:10as you I was like, we don't start for another 3 hours.
- 22:13Like I'm just trying to get my stuff ready.
- 22:15I can shave in 5 minutes. Like I can be ready.
- 22:17So yeah, that's, I mean, obviously keep it neat and tight
- 22:21and whatever, but it's, it's, it's different and I, I it's
- 22:26changed. The game has changed in so many
- 22:28ways. I hate the analytical part of
- 22:30it. I think there is some part of
- 22:32the analyticals that are OK, but there's not enough baseball
- 22:35people in it. It's a good tool.
- 22:38Yeah, yeah, but it's not the crutch.
- 22:40Exactly. And it doesn't, it doesn't tell
- 22:42me, you know what, what what what the guy has in his heart,
- 22:46the fight that a guy has, what's he going to do in in big
- 22:50situations? But but going back to Jazz
- 22:53Chisholm, listen, he's like I said, he's a different cup of
- 22:56tea. He's very talented.
- 22:59He's got a lot of talent. He fits into the locker room
- 23:04pretty good. Most of the guys that I know of
- 23:07that they've talked about, they they kind of accepted
- 23:10everything, but if you're not winning, it's an issue.
- 23:16You know what? I'm winning, Jim.
- 23:19You know what I call it? I call it the Jism Express.
- 23:22That's what I call it because hop on the Jism Express and I
- 23:26call him jazz jism because I don't even give him the
- 23:29compliment and giving him his last name because the guy, all
- 23:32he does is yap, dance around, prances around after the fact
- 23:35wearing his big glaring platinum freaking chain.
- 23:40And and he hasn't won nothing. He hasn't done anything.
- 23:43And for the Yankee fans to sit there and think, oh, this guy
- 23:47brings, you know, conversation and this guy brings personality.
- 23:50What personality is he bringing? A personality that you're going
- 23:53to want to kill every time he opens his mouth and throw the
- 23:56team under the bus? He came out and said, we're
- 23:58still the best team in the league when we were playing as
- 24:01bad as we were for three weeks straight.
- 24:04And you and then you have Aaron Boone.
- 24:05And I, I stick up for Aaron Boone because I think people
- 24:09blame Aaron Boone for all this crap.
- 24:11Aaron Boone is not the one that's getting into the box.
- 24:14Aaron Boone is not throwing the ball like these pitchers.
- 24:16These guys got to go out there. They're getting paid money.
- 24:19You're getting paid a lot of money.
- 24:19Go out there and play your GameStop bitching and moaning.
- 24:22Well, the analytics told me to do this, and the analytics tell
- 24:25me to do that. I'm so tired.
- 24:27Of hearing you got to go, you got to go even further.
- 24:30Aaron Boone is not making the lineup.
- 24:33Aaron Boone is not making the switches.
- 24:36Aaron Boone is there to babysit and to take orders from
- 24:40upstairs. Yeah, period.
- 24:42Yankee fans don't know that. They don't know that, yeah.
- 24:46And it's. No, they don't want to believe
- 24:47it. Exactly, exactly.
- 24:50You know, it's a different, it's, it's just a different
- 24:53mindset from like when Java and I were playing, you know what,
- 24:59we liked our manager, but there was a certain part that we
- 25:03didn't mess around with our manager.
- 25:05We respected him to a point where if he said something to
- 25:09us, he wasn't trying to be our friend.
- 25:13He was, hey, you're here. I'm your manager.
- 25:17Listen up. Straighten this up.
- 25:18Straighten that up. Fix this, fix that.
- 25:22Not these are savages. These guys are savages.
- 25:25I mean, that's nice, that's great, and it makes you feel
- 25:29good. But listen, that's that's not
- 25:32the type of manager that we had. That was that was Girardi's
- 25:35hardest thing. Like when he first came over
- 25:37after after Tory was like trying to find that balance between
- 25:42shoot, I didn't I'm not that far removed, you know, from from it
- 25:46and just being able to and obviously in 2008 when he took
- 25:50over was the last year, the old stadium.
- 25:51We didn't make the playoffs. And so he wasn't obviously off
- 25:55to a great start. Then we end up winning the next
- 25:57year. But yeah, it's you can always
- 26:00like back then, the dynamic of you always if you walk by him,
- 26:03you always pays your respect. You didn't walk by your manager.
- 26:06Never. And Mr. T would always be
- 26:08sitting right there, as Derek always called him.
- 26:11And he'd be sitting there doing his thing.
- 26:13And you always said hi, always said hi to him in the in the
- 26:17clubhouse. But Jimmy, you know, if, if, if
- 26:19Joe was doing one thing, you didn't bother him.
- 26:21If, if those sheets were on the desk.
- 26:23All right, I'll catch you in about 10.
- 26:26I'll come back later. And I think that I think that's
- 26:29the difference. I think, you know, you know,
- 26:33when we had again, look at the Major League coaching roster,
- 26:38there's not too many guys besides Brad Osmus, you know,
- 26:43with a lot of experience. I think.
- 26:44I think Harkey's still in the bullpen.
- 26:47Yeah, and then assistant pitching coach Preston Claiborne
- 26:49had a little bit of time. Yeah.
- 26:51So, you know, we we had guys that had championship with the
- 26:55Yankees, Willie Randolph, you know, Don Zimmer, you know, you
- 27:00know, Mel Stoudemire, guys that knew what it was like to play in
- 27:03New York. So when you were struggling, you
- 27:07had someone, dude, what happened to you when you played in New
- 27:10York and you were and you sucked and they were all over you.
- 27:13How did you get out of it? You know, you had that ability
- 27:16to have coaches that could help you through that.
- 27:18I don't think they have that now.
- 27:20And Joe Girardi. Are they, are they allowed to do
- 27:22it? No.
- 27:24Right. I remember when Joe Girardi was
- 27:26picked to be the next manager for the New York Yankees, and
- 27:29Donnie Baseball was fighting for that job too, and a lot of the
- 27:32Yankee fans wanted Don Mattingly to take over for the Yankees,
- 27:36not Joe Girardi. And it was obviously Brian
- 27:38Cashman's decision. I'm going the Girardi route now.
- 27:43I've heard stories and you know more than anybody I've heard
- 27:46stories about Girardi and Posada and there were stories that they
- 27:50didn't like each other. A Girardi never liked Posada and
- 27:53Posada was Derek Jeter's best friend or one of them.
- 27:56Him and Gerald Williams was his closest friends on the team.
- 27:59You were around both guys. So is it true Gerardi and Posada
- 28:04didn't like each other? And if it is true, why did they
- 28:08not like each other? In all honesty, it depends on
- 28:12what you ask them. I mean, if you would have asked
- 28:13them during the playing days, Girardi was considered a mentor.
- 28:18And I can I can pull back articles from back in those days
- 28:23saying that Joe Girardi was there to mentor Jorge Posada.
- 28:27That's why he came back in 97 and 98.
- 28:29You know, they were 97 and 98. Yeah.
- 28:32And but as time went on, the story changed a little bit that,
- 28:39oh, well, they didn't like each other.
- 28:40They didn't get along. And I think it was more as a
- 28:44manager than it was when they were teammates.
- 28:48It's it's crazy because I as a Yankee fan heard so many
- 28:52different stories. Now, I obviously I didn't have
- 28:54my inside scoop like you guys did.
- 28:56You both played for the Yankees. You guys were close to the
- 28:58Steinbrenner. So I didn't know them like that.
- 29:00But I was a die hard Yankee fan. I grew up a Don Mattingly fan.
- 29:03He was my favorite player and I, I Donnie, unfortunately
- 29:07everywhere he's gone, even as a manager, never won a
- 29:10championship, even out a guy as a bench manager, never won with
- 29:14the Yankees, with Joe Torre. So Don Manley just had really,
- 29:18really bad luck when Joe Girardi really was put in the position
- 29:21the way he was. Where after they picked Joe
- 29:25Girardi, what did they do that season?
- 29:26Well, they just went with CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett and Mark
- 29:31Teixeira in 2009 and they win a championship in the first
- 29:35inaugural season at the new stadium.
- 29:37I'm not surprised that happened. Do they do the same if Don
- 29:41Mattingly was there? Because I've heard stories,
- 29:44George Steinbrenner was very close with Donnie, but Hal and
- 29:47Hank did not like Donnie. So there was some stories coming
- 29:51out that way. And that's why they decided to
- 29:53go with Joe. I don't know if that to be true
- 29:56either, but I've, I've, I've seen Don Mattingly 3 years,
- 29:59three times in in in an amount of time.
- 30:02And I had I've had questions to ask him and I said, Don, you're
- 30:05you're my favorite player growing up.
- 30:07And he smiled. He's I appreciate it.
- 30:08And I said, what what was the what was the connection you had
- 30:12with the Stein Burners? He says the boss was always the
- 30:15boss, always showed me respect, always loved me as a player and
- 30:19always put me first after the team.
- 30:23He said, he said, but there was something about Hal and and
- 30:26Hank, they they were brought up differently and they looked at
- 30:30me as a different player, a replaceable player.
- 30:33That's what Don Mattingly told me.
- 30:36And but he didn't say it in a way where all he they hated me.
- 30:39He just said it in a professional way that we just
- 30:42didn't see eye to eye with the game of baseball.
- 30:45And maybe that's why he retired. I think Donnie could have played
- 30:48another year. I really do.
- 30:49I think he could have played in 96.
- 30:51Yeah, but what a lot of people didn't see back then was Donnie.
- 30:55We Donnie had to get up at 10:00 in the morning.
- 30:57He had to do a bunch of different exercises and
- 31:00stretches and just to be able to get out of bed, be able to walk
- 31:03down and have lunch. I mean, it really was a point
- 31:07where his day was, it was a 14 hour day for him.
- 31:12And I think that was what that was what was weighing on him
- 31:14more than anything. You know, would he have liked to
- 31:21continue? I'm sure.
- 31:23But I, I do think that that the injury was, it was, was the most
- 31:28the main reason why he he hung it up.
- 31:29Do you think, Donnie, for the five years that Don Manly was at
- 31:34the top level of the game, could you compare anybody over the
- 31:37last 40 years have had numbers like Don Manly in a five year
- 31:42stint except Aaron Judge? I mean, Aaron Judge would be the
- 31:44closest. I mean, Mike Trout, Really.
- 31:49That's it. Mike Trout.
- 31:50Yeah, that's crazy. Yeah, Trout.
- 31:53Trout would be 1. But see, and I would actually
- 31:55put Mike Trout in a very similar category to Don Mattingly.
- 31:58Yeah, but but the difference is. Playoff wise, too.
- 32:04Yes, exactly. Not his fault the nails are
- 32:06dysfunctional. And his injury has really what's
- 32:11been decimated his last four or five years.
- 32:15And it's going to be remembered as the guy that had 30 and 100
- 32:20and, you know, 40 and 108 or 8 or seven or eight years or is he
- 32:26going to be remembered the guy who's hitting 2:20 and has 17
- 32:31bombs? You know, it's it's really kind
- 32:34of, you know, a difficult situation.
- 32:38And again, it goes back to not winning a championship, not even
- 32:43being in the playoffs, much less.
- 32:45And I think it's a tough choice. I think it's a it's got to be a
- 32:49tough choice for Trout every year to say, OK, I'm going back
- 32:52to the Angels, you know? Jimmy, you look at Jabba and
- 32:56I've asked Jabba who his who was his favorite player to work with
- 32:59and play with, and it was CC Sabathia, OK, He always talks
- 33:03about CC. That is the nicest guy, one of
- 33:05the best teammates he's ever played with.
- 33:07He's had a lot of good ones. Jabba you would agree with, but
- 33:10CC was a guy that really stood out to you.
- 33:12Was there a particular player that you played with that stuck
- 33:17out to you more than the other? And, and why do you say that
- 33:20player over maybe the other players that people would have
- 33:24thought that you would have picked?
- 33:25Don Mattingly Donnie was the greatest team that I ever played
- 33:28with, not only from the standpoint of the good all
- 33:31around person and a good My first year in the big leagues,
- 33:36my very first day at Yankee Stadium, I got caught up on the
- 33:39road for three games in Baltimore and we came home and
- 33:44our first series was against the Red Sox in Yankee Stadium.
- 33:48And I come walking in the stadium.
- 33:50I'm taking it all in. I'm just, I'm, I'm literally on
- 33:53the phone with my dad in the locker room and going, dad, I
- 33:56fucking made it. I'm here at Yankee Stadium.
- 33:59I, you know, I, I, you know, my locker is next to Don Mattingly.
- 34:04This is the greatest day of my life.
- 34:06And instead of my dad going, son, I'm very proud of you
- 34:09because my dad was a cross between Woody Hayes and Bobby
- 34:12Knight, hardcore, hardcore. And he said to me, son, that is
- 34:19great, but what are you going to do to stay there?
- 34:23That was his comment. So I literally get off the
- 34:26phone. I'm a little disappointed that
- 34:28he didn't say, I'm proud of you, son.
- 34:29Congratulations. All right.
- 34:32I sit down on my my chair and I look over and Donnie comes
- 34:35walking in and he goes, hey, kid.
- 34:38He goes pretty good, pretty good couple games in Baltimore.
- 34:42You see. I see you're next to me.
- 34:45Just remember one thing, you don't last very long here unless
- 34:49you ask questions. Where was where was your locker
- 34:52at? Literally when you first walked
- 34:54in. To the left or the right?
- 34:56Yeah, Donnie had it as soon as you walked.
- 34:58He. Had he had the big one in the
- 34:59corner? In the corner, Yeah, yeah.
- 35:02They stuck me next to Stevie and Gino.
- 35:04Oh geez, yeah. I was right by the mailboxes.
- 35:09I'm like, hey, I didn't care. I got to look at Thurman's
- 35:12locker every day. Exactly.
- 35:15Exactly. Yeah, So.
- 35:18And one of the things great about Donnie, when Donnie was
- 35:20hurt, I was taking his position at first base, but yet he was
- 35:25out there every day trying to help me.
- 35:28How to hold a runner on, how to do something, how to how to give
- 35:31myself a better opportunity to be good that day to help our
- 35:34team win. You didn't find that in a
- 35:37superstar and a guy that was as big as Don Manley was during
- 35:40those days. And I just found that
- 35:43unbelievable. And like I said, the first time
- 35:45anybody, anybody asked me who's your favorite teammate, I don't
- 35:49even hesitate. It's Don Manley.
- 35:50Do you talk to him still? Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 35:54Every time. Every time Toronto comes in, I
- 35:57go see him. I I text him on his birthday
- 36:01every year. Yeah, we we still, we still stay
- 36:04in touch. By the way, Jabba, I I love when
- 36:07you're posting up in the private chat and he says Boone is at the
- 36:11press conference right now saying that the Yankees are a
- 36:13good defensive team so bad. Boone, what are you watching?
- 36:20Man? I love you, dude.
- 36:22I stick up for our boot all the time that you that would get you
- 36:26fired. If I was the GM of the team, I'd
- 36:28be like, dude, are we watching the same team?
- 36:30This team is absolutely putrid defensively.
- 36:34Well, you know, here's the situation.
- 36:37The manager before him criticized Gary Sanchez and lost
- 36:41his job. If you really, if you really
- 36:45want to get down to it, Joe Girardi was let go because of
- 36:51what he was saying about Gary Sanchez and at that time, Gary
- 36:54Sanchez. Gary Sanchez.
- 36:57That's what they called him, the Sanchez.
- 37:00And by the way, I was in Bermuda and I was going down the crystal
- 37:04tour and Gary Sanchez's niece was hanging out with me and my
- 37:10girlfriend and she's like, you know, Gary Sanchez is.
- 37:13And I said, yeah, he was a Yankee catcher.
- 37:14Yeah, that's my, that, that's like my my uncle or whatever she
- 37:17said. My, I, I see him all the time.
- 37:20I'm always during the summer. I'm always with Gary.
- 37:23And I'm like, if like, that's pretty funny.
- 37:25And now you're bringing up Gary said it popped in my head.
- 37:28So it it Sanchez, Chaz was a guy that had tremendous time.
- 37:32I remember when he came up and he was hitting the hell out of a
- 37:35ball. I don't know what happened to
- 37:36him. He mentally just it got into his
- 37:38head. He went to the Twins.
- 37:40He actually started hitting for the Twins.
- 37:42And then he, he finished up, yeah, he finished up with the
- 37:47Mets and. Then he went to the Padres.
- 37:48Actually, it was pretty good. That wasn't he with the Mets.
- 37:50Too. He was with the Mets for like a
- 37:51month or so. Then he went to the Padres and
- 37:53actually played well in that season with them.
- 37:56Not the. Padres.
- 37:57The Padre stint brought him back.
- 37:59Yeah, not Yankees good, but he was at least playing serviceable
- 38:02enough where he could have kept playing, but then I think they
- 38:04let him go at the end of the year.
- 38:05You know, Jimmy, before we let you go, because I know you're a
- 38:08busy guy and we love when you come on and we'll definitely get
- 38:11you on before the season is over.
- 38:13Because I'd love to hear if the Yankees make the playoffs, which
- 38:16they should. I I can't see them choking and
- 38:19not making the playoffs. But hey, it is the Yankees.
- 38:21They do have a good defensive team.
- 38:22Apparently, as Boone was saying, and then Chisholm saying Jazz,
- 38:26Chisholm coming out and saying, oh, yeah, we're still the best
- 38:29team in the league when we were 13 and 22 in the month of June.
- 38:33So yeah, that great. Congratulations to Jazz.
- 38:36He knows what he's talking about.
- 38:37And it only had three home runs in that Home Run Derby.
- 38:40What a disgrace. That was embarrassing.
- 38:43That was a little embarrassing. That was embarrassing.
- 38:46How do you go out there and say, oh, I have 17 home runs, I could
- 38:49win this thing and the guy had three home runs and then he
- 38:52made. He did foul tip but the worst,
- 38:54the worst was Jimmy if you remember Swish swinging and
- 38:57missing. Yes, I do remember that, yes.
- 39:01That's got to be the worst. I, I, but at least Nick and
- 39:05I'll, I'll say this about Swisher.
- 39:07When Swish was in the locker room, he knew how to like bring
- 39:11out the guys. I've heard so many stories about
- 39:13Nick Swan. I don't know him personally, but
- 39:15I'm sure you guys know him. Everything I've heard about
- 39:17Nick, he was the best teammate. He was cool collective in the
- 39:20he's always blasting his music in the locker room.
- 39:23Everybody was listening to the Metallica and all the crazy crap
- 39:26that he was playing all that Hard Rock.
- 39:28When I hear about Jism, he looks like a rapper.
- 39:31He looks like a Flavor Flav and he's standing there.
- 39:34I mean, he just the the way he presents himself, I just don't
- 39:40like it. I don't like the way he stands
- 39:42there like he's 11 something. He's done something for Yankees
- 39:46and he's really done nothing. And he couldn't cut it over
- 39:50there with the Marlins and he had to be traded.
- 39:52So let let's let's get down and dirty with that jizzy.
- 39:55So I would love to get jism on the show because I'm not going
- 39:58to sit here and beat around the Bush.
- 40:00I'll let him have it and see how he answers it and if he doesn't
- 40:03like it. Well, that just shows you how
- 40:04big of a bitch he is anyways, so it's the facts.
- 40:08I'm not going to sit here and beat around it.
- 40:09But Job, you know me. You've been working with me for
- 40:12a year now. I don't sit here when I
- 40:14interview somebody and say, Oh my God, it's jazz jism.
- 40:18Let me kisses this. You know, I just, I'll, I'll
- 40:22tell you if you don't like it. Well.
- 40:23If that does happen, I'm going to have a big bowl of popcorn
- 40:26just sitting there going. There you go.
- 40:29That's all. That's all.
- 40:30That's all I'm in it for. Which you probably usually no,
- 40:34you have a, you know, a bag full of Tootsie rolls, which you've
- 40:37been eating all night tonight. Fruity, fruity fruits, whatever.
- 40:40But when you get it, when you get into a good back and forth,
- 40:42yeah, it's popcorn time. Yeah, well, I've done it a
- 40:45couple of times on this. Show down with the best is when
- 40:47you burn out the Dorito Taco shells what I mentioned.
- 40:50That's true too. I, I might get some Doritos
- 40:53tonight. I I have Torito tacos.
- 40:55I like that. Anyways, Jimmy, we really
- 40:58appreciate the time your sensational keep up the good
- 41:00work. Let's get you on a little bit
- 41:02sooner than later, but maybe during the playoffs like we did
- 41:05last year. Love to know your take and I'm
- 41:08sure we'll have a lot of coverage through it.
- 41:10But as always, always available. Are you still in Levy's box?
- 41:15I'm still, Yep, I'm still working up in the suites.
- 41:17Yep, yeah. And there he is.
- 41:19He's hanging out all right, boys, hanging out with the
- 41:21Chiclets. Thanks, Jimmy.
- 41:22Thank. You thanks for having me.
- 41:24Thanks, Jimmy. Thanks, buddy.
- 41:25Jim Lahren. Fantastic stories.
- 41:28I love the Don Mattingly story. I'm a Donnie Baseball fan, so I
- 41:32love it. Speedy side note, who was it?
- 41:35The question I asked you in the private chat.
- 41:37Yeah, Brandon Inch. That's right.
- 41:42I always killed the Yankees too. The by way, Detroit.
- 41:44Remember Brandon? I asked.
- 41:45Java on the private chat who was the his former team age had zero
- 41:49and a home runner because I remember watching it as a kid I
- 41:51like I couldn't remember who it was he.
- 41:53Killed the Yankees all the time. All the time.
- 41:56I couldn't stand Brandon Inch, but I, I, I remembered him when
- 42:00he was on the tigers because he always pissed me off every time
- 42:03he went up to the plate and he was a good defender too.
- 42:05Yeah, he was pretty good. So yeah, I, I really liked.
- 42:09I don't know him personally, Jabba knew him personally, but I
- 42:12I'm sure he probably was a cool duo to chill out with and hang
- 42:15out with. But anyways, thank you to Jimmy.
- 42:18We really appreciate the time. Let's go to a sports minute when
- 42:20we come back. We've got a call to the pen.
- 42:23We got inside baseball and hopefully we might have goodies.
- 42:26Bag of balls. It doesn't look like it is that
- 42:28it's still in the 5th inning or 6th inning of his game.
- 42:31So I I don't think we have Goody tonight.
- 42:32It's an unfortunate situation, but the Goodwood is playing with
- 42:36his Woody. Goody has no woody.
- 42:38As we all know, it's. Breaking news, I need Brittany
- 42:41also. Anyways, when we come back, a
- 42:43little bit more and a lot more in baseball.
- 42:47Thank you to the one and only Jimmy.
- 42:49Larynx for joining us. Hopefully Nick Goody is winning
- 42:53and his team is moving on throughout the playoffs.
- 42:56We're rooting for him and unfortunately couldn't make it.
- 42:58So all the fans saying is Nick coming to be on?
- 43:01Is Nick going to be on? No, he's not on tonight, but I'm
