Latest / Pit Talk / Liam Lawson replaces Sergio Perez for F1's hardest gig: 2024 driver market complete
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Pit Talk, a Fox Sports and
- 0:02Speaker 1: Speed Cafe Formula one podcast. On today's episode, the final
- 0:06Speaker 1: for the season, Sergio Perez is out of Formula One,
- 0:09Speaker 1: with Liam Lawson promoted from RB to take his place
- 0:12Speaker 1: alongside Max Verstappen. In twenty twenty five and we award
- 0:16Speaker 1: the most prestigious prize in all motorsports, the Pit Talk
- 0:19Speaker 1: Alternative Championship. My name is Michael Lomonado, motorspord writer for
- 0:23Speaker 1: Fox Sports Australia. It's great to have your company and
- 0:26Speaker 1: the company of my co host from Speed Cafe. You
- 0:29Speaker 1: can call it racing balls if you like, but to him,
- 0:31Speaker 1: it will always be Minardi. It's Matt Kosh.
- 0:33Speaker 2: It will always be Minardi. It's fact founded by Gen Klomonardi,
- 0:39Speaker 2: based in Fayanza. It's an Italian team. You can put
- 0:42Speaker 2: whatever color jeans you like on them, but yeah, it
- 0:48Speaker 2: will always be Minardi and all forever long for the
- 0:51Speaker 2: days we have Johnny Moore, Bedelli and Taso Marquez. I mean,
- 0:57Speaker 2: Gaston Mezkane. How can you go past the goliaths of
- 1:02Speaker 2: Formula one qualifying. I'm not sure he ever did.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Qualify, but if he did, it would have been great.
- 1:10Speaker 2: He was, he was I think it was Actually it
- 1:13Speaker 2: was Argentinian.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Yes, he was the last Argentine to have raced before
- 1:16Speaker 1: Franco Colobinto.
- 1:17Speaker 2: There you go. So you know, dizzying height reached.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Historic, historic, and forever we'll be Maybe we should just
- 1:26Speaker 1: make a rule now forever we'll be referred to as
- 1:28Speaker 1: Minardi from now on, regardless of what happens to the
- 1:31Speaker 1: team name, because I'm sure there are many more team
- 1:33Speaker 1: name changes in that team's future, considering how many they've
- 1:36Speaker 1: had in the last four or five years. It's been
- 1:38Speaker 1: a big week in Formula One News will of course
- 1:40Speaker 1: get to the topic of the week, Sergio Peris, Liam
- 1:43Speaker 1: Lawson and the final red bull seats on the twenty
- 1:45Speaker 1: twenty five driver market in just a moment, but let's
- 1:47Speaker 1: wrap up what have been some of the more minor
- 1:49Speaker 1: stories since the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and Matt. Let's
- 1:52Speaker 1: start with Valtrie Botas and Honor Area Australian, because both
- 1:55Speaker 1: he and Mercedes had confirmed what had long beat expected
- 1:58Speaker 1: that he will return to brack is the team third
- 2:01Speaker 1: driver for twenty twenty five, ahead of an attempted return
- 2:04Speaker 1: in twenty twenty six.
- 2:05Speaker 2: The Mullet and the murk like that. It's yeah, it
- 2:11Speaker 2: makes a lot of sense as well. You've got George Russell,
- 2:13Speaker 2: who's got a bit of experience but isn't isn't a
- 2:16Speaker 2: championship contender. You know, he's never been through that process.
- 2:19Speaker 2: You've got a young drive and killing Kimmy Antonelli. You've
- 2:22Speaker 2: got then their third driver in Voucheri Botas, who has
- 2:25Speaker 2: that experience, knows a team can jump in and do
- 2:28Speaker 2: the job if he's ever needed to, so he takes
- 2:29Speaker 2: a lot of boxes there. I think that they probably
- 2:32Speaker 2: weren't getting from someone like Fred Vesti or or some
- 2:35Speaker 2: of the other cats they had footing around, So that
- 2:36Speaker 2: makes a lot of sense. But it also just keeps
- 2:39Speaker 2: Voucheri's foot in the door for potentially Cadillac or something
- 2:43Speaker 2: down the track, although I suspect we might see Sergio
- 2:46Speaker 2: end up there.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Well, it worked well for Mick Schumacher, didn't it pathwell
- 2:50Speaker 1: trodden me.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Well forever Grojeon in fairness and Treddie Racing, having secured
- 2:57Speaker 2: an in principle entry to the sport in twenty twenty.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Six, has secured Ferrari power units to bridge the gap
- 3:02Speaker 1: between its first season and whenever General Motors debuts its
- 3:06Speaker 1: first engine at the end of the decade. That's for
- 3:07Speaker 1: the press release, and it's also changed its name officially
- 3:10Speaker 1: to Cadillac Formula Racing.
- 3:13Speaker 2: This is all to do with the F one entry
- 3:16Speaker 2: and all sorts of legal rights that come along with that,
- 3:18Speaker 2: because what's happening behind the scenes at the moment is
- 3:22Speaker 2: discussing how they formally bring that team into the sport
- 3:25Speaker 2: because entries to Formula one don't yet open until for
- 3:28Speaker 2: twenty twenty six. Don't you open until sort of mid
- 3:30Speaker 2: December next year, so you've got that delay. Then there's
- 3:35Speaker 2: also the concord, so they can't actually sign anything to
- 3:37Speaker 2: say yes, we're going to enter. So Nita Current was
- 3:39Speaker 2: some sort of pre agreement. To have that pre agreement,
- 3:41Speaker 2: you have to have all the business names and stuff
- 3:43Speaker 2: in order, so it's just admin on the back end
- 3:46Speaker 2: of that. But there's lots and lots happening behind the scenes.
- 3:50Speaker 2: It's all just it's all very boring and less. You're
- 3:52Speaker 2: an accountant and me.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Maybe an account is a previous life. Let's go over
- 3:59Speaker 1: two fians to Minati, where RB has confirmed it will
- 4:03Speaker 1: be known as Racing Bulls from next year. Walking back,
- 4:06Speaker 1: it's controversially bland RB monica that it used only for
- 4:10Speaker 1: this season. That's per the twenty twenty five entry lists
- 4:12Speaker 1: published by the FIA recently.
- 4:14Speaker 2: The stupid thing is internally the team always referred to
- 4:17Speaker 2: itself as Racing Balls. You had the team trying to
- 4:21Speaker 2: push this v CARB thing that no one used, even
- 4:25Speaker 2: to the point where I remember sitting down and doing
- 4:28Speaker 2: an interview with someone at Red Bull and I asked
- 4:30Speaker 2: a question about RB, and the comms person Jompeding and said,
- 4:34Speaker 2: no, no VCARB, no RB. But they even I mean they
- 4:41Speaker 2: had a logo registered as a trademark that had the
- 4:46Speaker 2: website URL. All this stuff came out over twelve months ago.
- 4:50Speaker 2: And then we get to the entry listeners. Are RB brilliant.
- 4:53Speaker 2: It's a meaningless acronym for racing balls. Has some heritage
- 4:58Speaker 2: as well. It sort of refers B back to some
- 5:02Speaker 2: of the playing collection that dietrich Manaship's collected, the Fighting Bulls,
- 5:07Speaker 2: so it's the Racing Bulls to sort of draw parallels
- 5:09Speaker 2: with that. So there was some logic and reasoning behind
- 5:11Speaker 2: it that made some sense, and then they just completely
- 5:14Speaker 2: screwed up the marketing and sale of it, trying to
- 5:18Speaker 2: give too much coverage to Visa and cash App. I
- 5:21Speaker 2: now expect payment from them for that coverage because yeah,
- 5:28Speaker 2: it was just dumb, wasn't it. So three was just
- 5:31Speaker 2: the third, fourth, fifth different name in about five years.
- 5:34Speaker 2: It was Minarti, Toro Rosso, Alpha Tawi RB Racent was
- 5:38Speaker 2: his number five.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Yes, when was Alpha Tawi twenty twenty?
- 5:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I reckon that was twenty. Yeah, so it.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Would be three in four years pretty much three and
- 5:48Speaker 1: five years. So it's not great, not stable, I think
- 5:51Speaker 1: for me, the most difficult part was when they launched
- 5:53Speaker 1: RB and CEO Peter Bier said, no, no, it doesn't stand
- 5:56Speaker 1: for racing balls. It stands for Red Bull, like that
- 5:58Speaker 1: other team we've got cover on.
- 6:00Speaker 2: What is this all about, like Ibleipstitch the football team.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just a bit of a mess. At least
- 6:05Speaker 1: it's at least that's a name. Now I suppose it
- 6:08Speaker 1: on an acronym, but anyway, look, we'll figure out. I
- 6:10Speaker 1: guess people will understand how they feel about it once
- 6:12Speaker 1: we start using it next year, changing tach completely coinciding
- 6:16Speaker 1: with the FIA Prize giving Gala in Rwanda last week.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Obviously the inferior prize giving Gala the one that's coming
- 6:21Speaker 1: up later in this podcast. The country's president, Paul Kagame,
- 6:24Speaker 1: is officially confirmed that the country is bidding to join
- 6:27Speaker 1: the calendar with a purpose built circuit outside the capitol Kirgali,
- 6:30Speaker 1: which is well would be represent Formul one's return to
- 6:33Speaker 1: Africa if this does get off the ground for the
- 6:35Speaker 1: first time in decades.
- 6:36Speaker 2: And meanwhile, South Africa has done exactly the same thing
- 6:39Speaker 2: with the announcement of the formation of a steering committee
- 6:41Speaker 2: to host a Grand Prix from twenty twenty seven. So
- 6:44Speaker 2: you've now got these two African nations vying for Formula one.
- 6:48Speaker 2: It'll go to Rwanda. I'm in the process of writing
- 6:51Speaker 2: a story explaining exactly why that will happen. But there's
- 6:55Speaker 2: some strong business logic behind the rwand and Grand Prix
- 6:59Speaker 2: that you may may not agree with the ethics of,
- 7:01Speaker 2: but it's there. Meanwhile, the South African Grand Prix seems
- 7:06Speaker 2: to be basically Lewis Hamilton said it'd be a good idea,
- 7:10Speaker 2: so it must be. I think there's the entire business case,
- 7:14Speaker 2: and there's plants, got great kay Lame and all sorts
- 7:16Speaker 2: of stuff to grade one so I could host it.
- 7:17Speaker 2: But yeah, they are one to Grand Prix. Don't be
- 7:22Speaker 2: surprised if that gets announced. Keep an eye I don't
- 7:27Speaker 2: know if I saw it be life by the time
- 7:29Speaker 2: the podcast goes live, but keep an eye out for
- 7:31Speaker 2: my store and speed Cafe for that because it does
- 7:35Speaker 2: go into some of the business side of it, behind
- 7:38Speaker 2: it all, and the logic behind it. And there is
- 7:40Speaker 2: a strong degree of logic there.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And I mean at the end of the day, it
- 7:43Speaker 1: has what every modern circuit really needs, which is public backing.
- 7:47Speaker 1: If it doesn't have some big billionaire, if it's been
- 7:50Speaker 1: backed by the president.
- 7:51Speaker 2: I thought you were going to say, uninspiring desert surrounding it.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Well, that's also pretty crucial, as we've learned from And
- 7:58Speaker 1: we all look forward to the kidious to join the
- 8:00Speaker 1: calendar in the well.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Will it be at night? That's my next question, it.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Asked to me obviously, because you want to what you
- 8:06Speaker 1: wouldn't want it to look too different to all the
- 8:07Speaker 1: other race tracks, would you by running the day? So
- 8:11Speaker 1: we all looked forward to that one. And finally let's
- 8:14Speaker 1: conclude with Carlos Science and Ferrari because they've made farewell
- 8:17Speaker 1: to each other with the track date Furana a Furano
- 8:20Speaker 1: with Carlos Science and Carlos Science of course Senior and
- 8:23Speaker 1: Junior cutting laps around the track in the F one
- 8:26Speaker 1: seventy five, the team's twenty twenty two cars A. I
- 8:29Speaker 1: think this is his final big public official engagement as
- 8:32Speaker 1: a Ferrari driver.
- 8:34Speaker 2: This made me realize that for I really missed a
- 8:36Speaker 2: tricky because they've got a bit of a two for
- 8:37Speaker 2: one deal by signing Carlos Science, didn't they Yeah, they
- 8:40Speaker 2: could have just rotated them through and paid them meet
- 8:42Speaker 2: half the money. It's like a free reserve driver, don't
- 8:46Speaker 2: even have to change the stickers on the car. But
- 8:50Speaker 2: a seriousness this was minder setting is that Fred Besser
- 8:53Speaker 2: tem Princi will sort of put this to Carlo Si Senior.
- 8:57Speaker 2: It was Vesso's initiative. And how cool would it be
- 9:03Speaker 2: your dad's a motorsport legend to jump on track with
- 9:06Speaker 2: your dad turn a few laps in a Ferrari at
- 9:08Speaker 2: its home track. I just have some fun, no pressure,
- 9:12Speaker 2: no expectation, just go out there and have some unabashed fund.
- 9:14Speaker 2: I think that sounds like a bloody good idea. I
- 9:16Speaker 2: love the video, I love some of the radio exchanges
- 9:19Speaker 2: that we've heard. It's just a good wholesome way when
- 9:24Speaker 2: they've really shafted Carlo.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Just a good wholesome way to end. On's a pretty
- 9:30Speaker 1: disappointing in the relationship. Leave it on a somewhat positive note.
- 9:34Speaker 1: At least his ending on a positive note is Carlos
- 9:37Speaker 1: science in a weird way. The ending of Sergio Pairs
- 9:40Speaker 1: at Red Bull Racing a little bit more complicated, certainly
- 9:43Speaker 1: a little bit messier, but it has been confirmed at
- 9:46Speaker 1: least a week and a bit nearly two weeks after
- 9:49Speaker 1: the season ending race in Abu Dhabi, the Sergio Pairs
- 9:51Speaker 1: will not be racing for Red Bull Racing in twenty
- 9:54Speaker 1: twenty five. Depending on whose press release and comments you'd
- 9:58Speaker 1: want to believe, he's either decided he wants to sabbatical
- 10:00Speaker 1: or he's taken the money and walked. I guess in
- 10:02Speaker 1: between there you could kind of see both of them
- 10:04Speaker 1: being accurate, because he's chosen to walk because he's been
- 10:06Speaker 1: paid off. But in any case, it's clear that Red
- 10:08Speaker 1: Bull Racing has not wanted him there for a little
- 10:11Speaker 1: while now, and he will be replaced by Liam Lawson
- 10:14Speaker 1: with all eleven Grand Prix of experience under his belt
- 10:16Speaker 1: across two seasons, of course, and he'll be the least
- 10:19Speaker 1: experienced Red Bull Racing driver since vid Antonio Liuzzi made
- 10:22Speaker 1: his debut for the team in two thousand and five,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and then after him Robert Dornboss. It's not an interesting that,
- 10:28Speaker 1: isn't it something we all have seen coming now for
- 10:31Speaker 1: I don't know a month or so, maybe more, but
- 10:33Speaker 1: it's now finally been confirmed, and like, well, let's out
- 10:36Speaker 1: with Surjo Paris before we talk about the Liam Lawson angle.
- 10:38Speaker 1: In fact, let's give him his due. I suppose disappointing
- 10:42Speaker 1: way for him to end his Red Bull Racing career,
- 10:45Speaker 1: but I think there's at least some sincerity. Dare I
- 10:48Speaker 1: say it in the team's comments that he has been
- 10:51Speaker 1: a valuable member of that team for three of the
- 10:53Speaker 1: four seasons. At least he has contributed to constructors championships
- 10:57Speaker 1: and at least to one driver's championship in twenty two.
- 11:00Speaker 1: So how do you think, in totality will reflect on
- 11:02Speaker 1: Paris's career at Rebel Racing.
- 11:04Speaker 2: I think he was solid enough obviously twenty twenty four
- 11:06Speaker 2: didn't get a plan. There was a wobble in twenty
- 11:08Speaker 2: three as well, which he was able to recover from.
- 11:10Speaker 2: But we've got to put almost this year to the
- 11:15Speaker 2: side a little bit like we did Daniel Riccardo sort
- 11:17Speaker 2: of from when he left Reno. You know, he's almost
- 11:19Speaker 2: sort of two careers, like the Michael Schumacher return thing
- 11:23Speaker 2: compartmentalized twenty twenty four and look at the first three years,
- 11:25Speaker 2: and he was pretty solid. He helped the team win
- 11:28Speaker 2: constructive championships, finished second in the championship himself, giving Red
- 11:31Speaker 2: Bull its first one to two in that competition in
- 11:33Speaker 2: its history. That's a pretty good thing given that, you know,
- 11:36Speaker 2: Mark Webber wasn't able to do that obviously, Daniel Ricardo
- 11:40Speaker 2: and said, we weren't able to do that because the
- 11:41Speaker 2: car just wasn't there to win championship. So that's that's
- 11:46Speaker 2: quite an achievement to finish second, you know, to get
- 11:48Speaker 2: to a Formula one I've said this before, you have
- 11:50Speaker 2: to be a phenomenally good racing driver to then finish
- 11:53Speaker 2: as the next best guy in the championship. Yes, he
- 11:56Speaker 2: had a significant car advantage, but you still have to
- 11:58Speaker 2: be able to maximize that, and he did enough so
- 12:02Speaker 2: I think from that element alone, we should reflect kindly
- 12:06Speaker 2: on his career and his time at Rebelm more specifically.
- 12:10Speaker 2: But the big point that everyone is forgetting is let's
- 12:12Speaker 2: go back six seven years. It was about twenty seventeen,
- 12:17Speaker 2: twenty eighteen something like that. He saved seventeen what is
- 12:22Speaker 2: now Astamat the Force India had gone bust. He put
- 12:26Speaker 2: it into administration and doing so, he saved four hundred
- 12:28Speaker 2: people's jobs. That's you know, yes, he was out of
- 12:32Speaker 2: the job himself effectively, but he saved four hundred people's jobs,
- 12:35Speaker 2: four hundred people who were far less well off than his.
- 12:39Speaker 2: That deserves to be applauded massively because he didn't have
- 12:44Speaker 2: to do that. He could let the team sink, but
- 12:48Speaker 2: he didn't know. I thought that that was extraordinary. He's
- 12:50Speaker 2: a six time Grand Prix winner. You know, that's a
- 12:53Speaker 2: pretty bloody good career. There are world champions who have
- 12:55Speaker 2: won less Grand Prix than Sergio Perez, so let's keep
- 12:59Speaker 2: it in active. Twenty twenty four didn't go to plan,
- 13:02Speaker 2: but everything up to that point was pretty positive, I
- 13:07Speaker 2: think for Sergio.
- 13:08Speaker 1: And I think what it demonstrates is actually, I mean,
- 13:11Speaker 1: obviously he to use a phrase that's in vogue now
- 13:15Speaker 1: in Formula one, probably exceeded his shelf life at Red
- 13:18Speaker 1: Bull Racing, But I think that reflects a bigger story really,
- 13:22Speaker 1: which is he was originally brought into Red Bull Racing
- 13:24Speaker 1: essentially as a stop gap solution. He wasn't meant to
- 13:26Speaker 1: be a permanent, long term driver, who was meant to
- 13:28Speaker 1: be there, arguably for as little as a year or
- 13:30Speaker 1: a couple of years, let's call it a nice round
- 13:32Speaker 1: three seasons, and for three seasons he was productive enough
- 13:36Speaker 1: to use that word again enough In twenty twenty one,
- 13:39Speaker 1: his contribution in Abu Dhabi won Max for staff and
- 13:42Speaker 1: the Driver's Championship. I think that's something people sometimes also
- 13:45Speaker 1: gloss over the fact that the only reason Lewis Hamilton
- 13:48Speaker 1: was in a not totally dominant position when that safety
- 13:51Speaker 1: car came out was because of that battle with Sergio
- 13:53Speaker 1: Peris in the middle of the race. In twenty twenty two,
- 13:56Speaker 1: he did enough to win the Contructor Championship, and then
- 13:58Speaker 1: twenty twenty three, as he said, he got that one
- 13:59Speaker 1: too with the team, which had never before been achieved.
- 14:01Speaker 1: So despite those form slumps that occurred in all of
- 14:05Speaker 1: those seasons to worsening degrees as we went on, made
- 14:09Speaker 1: a meaningful contribution over three years when the team wasn't
- 14:12Speaker 1: convinced that had an alternative to him, did the job
- 14:16Speaker 1: year four. However, when you know, logically in a cycle
- 14:19Speaker 1: this long, you would expect a team to have its
- 14:20Speaker 1: ups and downs, as Red Bull Racing has had. Probably
- 14:22Speaker 1: they didn't expect to have such a down this year
- 14:24Speaker 1: after the up of last year, but was found to
- 14:27Speaker 1: not be enough for a team at the very front
- 14:30Speaker 1: of a very competitive field this year. You know, we
- 14:33Speaker 1: had thought we're by many metrics, the most competitive season
- 14:36Speaker 1: ever in Formula One, by a number of winners one twos,
- 14:38Speaker 1: by team four teams competing for victories, all that kind
- 14:41Speaker 1: of thing. And I think it just shows and this
- 14:44Speaker 1: is maybe the broader picture at Red Bull Racing, that
- 14:46Speaker 1: that in decision over its driver lineup, its lack of
- 14:51Speaker 1: security over how it wants to use its four cars,
- 14:53Speaker 1: over its driver program that in some respects has been
- 14:57Speaker 1: superseded by the more targeted driver programs of rival teams
- 15:00Speaker 1: that are all picking up some of the most talented
- 15:01Speaker 1: drivers of the next generation. It's all been found to
- 15:04Speaker 1: be wanting and Sergio pei Is being in the car
- 15:06Speaker 1: for this fourth season and having secured a contract for
- 15:09Speaker 1: a fifth and a sixth theoretically just shows actually that
- 15:13Speaker 1: there's a bigger problem Red Bull Racing has had to
- 15:15Speaker 1: address in allowing him to fundamentally overstay his welcome, which
- 15:19Speaker 1: I guess kind of brings us to Liam Lawson. I
- 15:21Speaker 1: don't want to tar Leeham Lawson with all of the
- 15:24Speaker 1: problems Red Bull Racing has had, because he deserves he's
- 15:26Speaker 1: shot in Formula One, and he's clearly shown that he's
- 15:29Speaker 1: probably quick enough to warrant a shot at the front,
- 15:31Speaker 1: even if it's after only eleven Grand Prix over two seasons.
- 15:35Speaker 1: But Red Bulls kind of ended up with a solution
- 15:37Speaker 1: that I'm not sure anyone's really one hundred percent convinced by,
- 15:40Speaker 1: are they, Because not only does it mean Lean Lawson's
- 15:42Speaker 1: going to Red Bull Racing, I mean that means Yuki
- 15:44Speaker 1: Snod is not going to Red Bull Racing because despite
- 15:46Speaker 1: them renewing his contract earlier this year, unilaterally have chosen
- 15:50Speaker 1: not to put him at the senior team, which is
- 15:51Speaker 1: kind of like, what's the point of being at the
- 15:52Speaker 1: junior team? It's going to be Isaac Kadjabin RB. But
- 15:55Speaker 1: the team, no one really seems that convinced by him either.
- 15:59Speaker 1: You know, they've spoken about him twice really, and it's
- 16:02Speaker 1: both of his FP one sessions, and at neither opportunity
- 16:04Speaker 1: they really say anything super positive. And that's no slight
- 16:07Speaker 1: against him. It's just suggests he's not going to be
- 16:09Speaker 1: a generational talent. It's not like they've arrived at the
- 16:13Speaker 1: perfect optimal solution whereby all ends are tied up neatly.
- 16:17Speaker 1: There's still kind of to me feel like they're in
- 16:19Speaker 1: a little bit of this rather just hoping that Liam
- 16:22Speaker 1: Lawson might be the circuit breaker.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Yeah, you're right in that Sergio pais been there for
- 16:27Speaker 2: as long as he's been indicates a deeper problem within
- 16:30Speaker 2: the Red Bulls structure and one that historically and never had.
- 16:33Speaker 2: I mean back to the days of Haimongshwari and Jean
- 16:36Speaker 2: rik Vern where it brought two young drivers in and
- 16:38Speaker 2: then bones them both two more young drivers in Carlo
- 16:42Speaker 2: Science and Max Forstappen and then those guys, So once
- 16:46Speaker 2: upon a time there was no problem. And now that
- 16:49Speaker 2: other teams have their own junior programs that mirror what
- 16:53Speaker 2: Rebull's doing, there's less pool or you know, the pool
- 16:56Speaker 2: isn't as deep within that program, but I think it
- 16:59Speaker 2: also speaks. So this is a conversation I was having
- 17:02Speaker 2: a week or two back with someone was how long
- 17:05Speaker 2: can you realistically be Max for Staffen's teammate, and the
- 17:10Speaker 2: figure we landed obvious sort of two years, the reason
- 17:13Speaker 2: being that the first year can be explained and written
- 17:17Speaker 2: off as learning. You're coming into Max's team. He's a
- 17:19Speaker 2: generational talent. Everything's built around Max, and you've got to
- 17:22Speaker 2: come to terms with that. The second year you're on
- 17:24Speaker 2: equal footing, and you've then got to come to terms
- 17:27Speaker 2: with the fact that you're going to be decimated by
- 17:30Speaker 2: a generational talent, one of the best that Formula one's
- 17:32Speaker 2: ever seen. And at the end of that time, your
- 17:35Speaker 2: reputation Formula one is probably going to be tarnished because
- 17:39Speaker 2: not necessarily because of anything that you as a driver
- 17:41Speaker 2: have done, but because who you're competing against. And that's
- 17:44Speaker 2: if you look back too. When Daniel Ricardo was promoted
- 17:48Speaker 2: to Repel alongside seb said was sort of on his
- 17:51Speaker 2: way down, on his way out of Red Bull, as
- 17:53Speaker 2: Daniel was on his way in and up and as
- 17:55Speaker 2: a result at the end of what was that twenty fifteen,
- 17:58Speaker 2: fourteen or fourteen. There we go, I'm showing how bad
- 18:01Speaker 2: my memory is. But at the end of twenty fourteen,
- 18:04Speaker 2: Daniel's reputation was golden because he'd beaten the world champion,
- 18:07Speaker 2: a full time world champion. That's the battle that Liam
- 18:11Speaker 2: Lawson is now going to the advantage obviously that Daniel
- 18:14Speaker 2: had as he had a season or two in one
- 18:16Speaker 2: under his belt with ty Rosso and HRT, he was
- 18:19Speaker 2: nowhere near as green as what Liam Lawson is. But
- 18:22Speaker 2: that's now the opportunity that Liam finds himself in. If
- 18:24Speaker 2: he goes into Red Bull and can even match Max,
- 18:29Speaker 2: that's pretty extraordinary. To beat him is unrealistic, wholly unrealistic.
- 18:33Speaker 2: I guess in Daniel's favor there was regulation change as well,
- 18:37Speaker 2: but if he can go in there and deliver the job.
- 18:39Speaker 2: This is something that I actually spoke to Liam shortly
- 18:42Speaker 2: after his announcement as a Red Bull driver and it
- 18:46Speaker 2: was absolutely bouncing off the ceiling. But one of the
- 18:49Speaker 2: points that he made predictably so obviously yes, because yeah,
- 18:54Speaker 2: that he looks.
- 18:55Speaker 1: So serious in their announcement Instagram. He should have been
- 18:57Speaker 1: happier than that.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that's sort of lean. He doesn't get too carried
- 19:04Speaker 2: away as a professional. You're get to get my away
- 19:06Speaker 2: from the cameras. And he's awesome, awesome dude, hilarious as well,
- 19:12Speaker 2: actually an incredible guitar player for what its worth. Imagine
- 19:17Speaker 2: getting him and David Hill on stage. But you know,
- 19:21Speaker 2: he said stuff like, there's nobody better learn from. It's
- 19:23Speaker 2: an opportunity to become the best driver I can be.
- 19:25Speaker 2: There's nobody better for me to go up against, you know,
- 19:28Speaker 2: referencing the fact that he's going to be driving alongside
- 19:31Speaker 2: a proven career killer in Max with Stafford. You know,
- 19:33Speaker 2: he's ended the careers effectively of Daniel Ricardo, Sergio Perry's
- 19:36Speaker 2: Pierre Gasoline, Alex Albert obviously guessing albut I've gone on
- 19:39Speaker 2: and done other things. But the point stands. So it's
- 19:44Speaker 2: a hell of a task. But he's also realistic, you know, obviously,
- 19:49Speaker 2: once he said to me, I know, the team goal
- 19:51Speaker 2: next year is to be fighting for the championship, and
- 19:53Speaker 2: if we're in a position to do that, I'm doing
- 19:54Speaker 2: my job. He knows he's not there to win necessarily
- 19:58Speaker 2: races or championships, whatever. But he said to score points
- 20:01Speaker 2: and do that consistently, which is something that Perees can't do.
- 20:04Speaker 2: The challenge that he will have is not only will
- 20:06Speaker 2: he be compared to Max Astappen, which is a fair
- 20:10Speaker 2: comparison because the teammate, he will also be compared to
- 20:12Speaker 2: Sergio Perez, which is a wholly unfair comparison because different cars,
- 20:17Speaker 2: different areas, different drivers, different competition, and Yuki Sonoda again
- 20:23Speaker 2: for all the same reasons. It's a wholly unfair comparison
- 20:27Speaker 2: needs to be judged on his own own merits, not
- 20:29Speaker 2: in comparison to others. The Sonoda thing, you know, look
- 20:33Speaker 2: that they renewed Sergio in the first place two years ago,
- 20:35Speaker 2: whatever it was, I mean that it was done then,
- 20:38Speaker 2: wasn't it. Yuki Sonoda has been there to satisfy Honda. Basically,
- 20:45Speaker 2: there are clearly issues as to why they don't think
- 20:48Speaker 2: he's worthy of a rebel opportunity. I think we've heard
- 20:51Speaker 2: some of those. I don't know that we know all
- 20:53Speaker 2: of them. But have we heard the same sort of
- 20:55Speaker 2: brashness that you know, aggression, fiery temper from Liam No.
- 21:00Speaker 2: We heard him being forthright on the radio. Yeah, absolutely,
- 21:02Speaker 2: but that's what rebel wants. So yeah, I don't think
- 21:06Speaker 2: Yuki has been treated harsh and the running on the
- 21:08Speaker 2: wall has been there for two or three years for him.
- 21:11Speaker 2: He'll do twenty twenty five with RB and then probably
- 21:16Speaker 2: move on with Honda Engines because you know, he clearly
- 21:22Speaker 2: now has no value to Red Bull, so I can't
- 21:24Speaker 2: see that he will hang around hoping for an opportunity. Conversely,
- 21:28Speaker 2: you know we saw Daniel Ricardo. Once Red Bull decides
- 21:31Speaker 2: you have no value to the organization beyond the Honda Engines,
- 21:35Speaker 2: that is what Yuki Sonoda is. They'll cut and run.
- 21:38Speaker 2: They'll find someone else. Ivid limblad amwasa there's a number
- 21:42Speaker 2: of kids out there that, yes, it will be a
- 21:46Speaker 2: gamble to promote, but they've done that before.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm sort of a little bit in two minds
- 21:50Speaker 1: about all of those things. On the one hand, like
- 21:53Speaker 1: we've sort of illustrated this. The former Minati dam used
- 21:56Speaker 1: to just be ruthless about the way we deal with
- 21:58Speaker 1: its drivers. Yuki Sonoda. Putting aside the Honda connection, I
- 22:01Speaker 1: suppose who's clearly quick. He's quick enough to have been
- 22:04Speaker 1: a Red Bull backed driver, even though the Honda connections.
- 22:06Speaker 1: What got him there. Clearly is talented enough to be there,
- 22:09Speaker 1: but would never have survived into what will be a
- 22:12Speaker 1: fifth season by now because if that already decided he
- 22:14Speaker 1: wasn't going to Red Bull Racing, that would be it.
- 22:16Speaker 1: As you say, they would be much more willing to
- 22:18Speaker 1: take a punt even on I mean any number of
- 22:21Speaker 1: the young drivers' talk about arvadd bad he's gonna have
- 22:23Speaker 1: his first F two season next year. There would have
- 22:25Speaker 1: been more than enough. You know, he'll have that F
- 22:27Speaker 1: two season. Doesn't matter where you'll finish, You'll end up
- 22:29Speaker 1: at a racing Bulls or whatever it'll be called in
- 22:31Speaker 1: twenty twenty six, which may well be the case, and
- 22:34Speaker 1: the same applies for Liam Lawson at the senior team now.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Admittedly Red Bull has its history is relatively short, which
- 22:42Speaker 1: means it sometimes it's hard to look back at how
- 22:44Speaker 1: it behaved in its early years, particularly very early years.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Been no resemblance to the team today or even then
- 22:49Speaker 1: it's middle success years. You can't just copy and paste,
- 22:53Speaker 1: particularly considering Max with staff and is so much at
- 22:55Speaker 1: the center of the team, Unlike even Sebastian Vedel in
- 22:57Speaker 1: those days. I think the team is much more built
- 22:59Speaker 1: around Max and was around Sebastian a couple of different ways,
- 23:04Speaker 1: and so I don't think it's a problem to promote
- 23:06Speaker 1: Lean Lawson with so relatively little experience, particularly also in
- 23:09Speaker 1: a year when Mercedes is taking a punt on Kimi
- 23:12Speaker 1: Antonelli who hasn't had any Grand PRIXV experience, and maybe
- 23:15Speaker 1: that reflects on their lower ambitions next year. But I
- 23:18Speaker 1: think if you ask anyone Mercedes, they would hope that
- 23:20Speaker 1: they'll be contending for regular wins and maybe even the
- 23:22Speaker 1: championship next season. And if not, he'll still only have
- 23:24Speaker 1: one year of racing under his belt in twenty twenty six,
- 23:26Speaker 1: when they definitely will hope for that. But on the
- 23:29Speaker 1: other hand, Red Bull Racing needs some stability and it's
- 23:34Speaker 1: hard to imagine that being achieved with Liam Lawson. But
- 23:37Speaker 1: then I guess if you argue that, then you're arguing
- 23:39Speaker 1: essentially to go and find someone just like Sergio Peis,
- 23:41Speaker 1: because this was the argument raised after Alex Albon's career
- 23:45Speaker 1: with Red Bull Racing ended, and they went and found
- 23:47Speaker 1: someone who was a safe set of hands, essentially, and
- 23:50Speaker 1: that's where they land on. You know, had that thinking prevailed,
- 23:54Speaker 1: probably would have ended up with Valtribotas at Red Bull
- 23:56Speaker 1: Racing because it feels like he's in exactly the same
- 23:57Speaker 1: position to his career Pairs was looking for a drive,
- 24:01Speaker 1: So that's kind of it's sort of it's just an
- 24:03Speaker 1: interesting position. I find the whole Red Bull program to
- 24:06Speaker 1: be and I guess this is sort of like the
- 24:08Speaker 1: reverse of growing Pains, where they're trying to return to
- 24:10Speaker 1: the format they had maybe five or six years ago,
- 24:13Speaker 1: where they had a team dedicated only to drivers who
- 24:16Speaker 1: were there for no more ridi than three seasons and
- 24:18Speaker 1: they were turfed, and then you just try them at
- 24:20Speaker 1: Red Bull Racing. It's just going to be very interesting.
- 24:23Speaker 1: I think this next few years at Red Bull's gonna
- 24:25Speaker 1: be very interesting. There could be some very hard questions
- 24:27Speaker 1: for the team to answer. I hope Liam does well,
- 24:29Speaker 1: obviously because I think he deserves a probably quite a
- 24:32Speaker 1: long career in Formula One. But I mean, how many
- 24:36Speaker 1: times can drivers who are teammates with Maxistaff and get lucky,
- 24:38Speaker 1: Because I feel like that that's what they've all been right.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Pierre Gasly could have had his career ended, but because
- 24:44Speaker 1: he was at the start of that drying up of
- 24:46Speaker 1: the pipeline. There was a seat for him back at
- 24:48Speaker 1: whatever it was called at that time, Toro Rosso I think,
- 24:51Speaker 1: and he was able to rebuild himself Minardi the former
- 24:53Speaker 1: Marati team. Likewise, Alex Albot, I mean he was out
- 24:56Speaker 1: of the sport for a year but managed to find
- 24:57Speaker 1: his way back into William Sergo Perry's may have had
- 25:00Speaker 1: his career ended by this. He sort of suggested he
- 25:02Speaker 1: wants to remains to be seen, Like you said, maybe
- 25:05Speaker 1: the Cadillac team. A lot can change in twelve months, though,
- 25:08Speaker 1: what will happen to Liam Lawson if things don't work
- 25:10Speaker 1: out in the ideal way and read Bull loses patience again?
- 25:13Speaker 1: So I hope he does well enough to avoid that
- 25:15Speaker 1: for a least a couple of years and build a
- 25:16Speaker 1: reputation that'll see him continue into Formula One for a
- 25:20Speaker 1: long time. That's the news for the last week and
- 25:23Speaker 1: a half whatever it is technically of the official Formula
- 25:26Speaker 1: One season. Let's all pretend everything stops now for a
- 25:28Speaker 1: couple of months until racing starts again.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Let's hope it all stops. I need a break, Yeah, I.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Think everyone needs a bit of a break. Christmas is
- 25:34Speaker 1: just so close. But of course, our Alternative Championship has
- 25:37Speaker 1: not concluded yet. We must wrap this one up. We're
- 25:39Speaker 1: going to get to the full rankings in just a moment.
- 25:42Speaker 1: But of course, having missed the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
- 25:44Speaker 1: review and now back for the final episode wrapping up
- 25:47Speaker 1: the entire season, we do have points to give away.
- 25:51Speaker 1: We do have a couple of entries still for the
- 25:52Speaker 1: Alternative Championship before we can officially declare a winner. Matt,
- 25:56Speaker 1: do you want to start us off with the last
- 25:58Speaker 1: six selections of the ALTRA season?
- 26:01Speaker 2: Yeah, the one where the points don't matter and everyone
- 26:04Speaker 2: doesn't know it exists, but they really, really really want it.
- 26:08Speaker 2: So my points have been skewed not just by Abu Dhabi,
- 26:12Speaker 2: but by the events of the last week or so
- 26:14Speaker 2: as well. So there is a bit of a Liam
- 26:17Speaker 2: Lawson flavor to the first selection, which is obviously Liam Lawson.
- 26:23Speaker 2: I've given him four hundred and thirty seven points because
- 26:27Speaker 2: that's a number of points that that Max scored this year.
- 26:30Speaker 2: I was tempted to go for given the number of
- 26:33Speaker 2: points between Max and Sergio, but I thought I can't
- 26:37Speaker 2: be bothering the mass.
- 26:39Speaker 1: I think you're pretty much just har it don't you,
- 26:41Speaker 1: and that you probably get your answer.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Yeah, probably it was a third though.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Oh yes it was actually wasn't that we talked about that.
- 26:46Speaker 1: It was about a third. That's great.
- 26:49Speaker 2: So it was four hundred and thirty seven points. A
- 26:51Speaker 2: third of that is I've got socks on. I can't
- 26:54Speaker 2: count that.
- 26:55Speaker 1: That's too much, very good. I like that, though. I'm
- 26:58Speaker 1: going to start some not esoteric, maybe a little bit
- 27:02Speaker 1: tenuous of a point score, considering we don't often talk
- 27:05Speaker 1: about reserve drivers, especially if they're not knocking on the
- 27:07Speaker 1: door for Formula One. I'm taking thirty points off Sauber
- 27:10Speaker 1: or the former Sauber team, the former BMW team, and
- 27:13Speaker 1: then anyone look at it for describing development drivers Tao
- 27:16Speaker 1: Porchet and Zane Maloney as having graduated from their driver
- 27:20Speaker 1: academy when really what they're saying is they're severing all
- 27:23Speaker 1: ties with them and don't want anything more to do
- 27:25Speaker 1: with them. That was beautifully creative language, well I mean
- 27:29Speaker 1: creative language warranting points off. Of course, thirty points off.
- 27:32Speaker 1: I say thirty because that's ten for each of them,
- 27:34Speaker 1: including Carrie Shriner, who at least is sticking with Soubur
- 27:38Speaker 1: in a new role, but has also in inverted Commas
- 27:41Speaker 1: graduated from the Academy.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I saw that and it was Yeah, it's
- 27:51Speaker 2: some of the most creative public relations I've seen in
- 27:55Speaker 2: quite some time. Actually took to Twitter and and sort
- 27:59Speaker 2: of made his much because, let's face it, effectively it
- 28:02Speaker 2: was a press release to say so long and thanks
- 28:04Speaker 2: for all the fish yes, to borrow a hitchhiker's guard
- 28:08Speaker 2: to the galaxy reference. It was. Yeah, it was glorious
- 28:13Speaker 2: in its ridiculousness. So I wholeheartedly agree with with thirty
- 28:18Speaker 2: points off. In fact, I encourage you to reconsider give
- 28:20Speaker 2: them more off.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Maybe I should maybe all maybe all times of by ten.
- 28:28Speaker 2: That we're talking three point one hundred points a driver, well,
- 28:38Speaker 2: will you've taken three hundred points off? I've given three.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Oh, okay, not enough to balance it out, but to
- 28:46Speaker 1: botas okay.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Because he's a third driver, it's message. I think that's
- 28:50Speaker 2: a good move for all involved. It's not a brilliant
- 28:53Speaker 2: move because that's face that he's not racing, but it's
- 28:56Speaker 2: a good move and worthy of three points. And given
- 28:59Speaker 2: that we have a history of taking huge numbers of
- 29:01Speaker 2: points off, I think even just getting one point in
- 29:03Speaker 2: the alternative Championship is pretty seismic.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Yes, it is a good.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Yeah, he gets three points for inking a deal would
- 29:14Speaker 2: be third driver at.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Me, very good. I've in fact, I've noticed now I'll
- 29:19Speaker 1: just let you know in advance. At all, I'm only
- 29:21Speaker 1: taking points off. So it's next is one hundred and
- 29:25Speaker 1: fourteen points off Red Bull. We've already talked about this
- 29:28Speaker 1: for exercising Yuki Sonoda's contract extension calls earlier this year,
- 29:32Speaker 1: but still clearly having no interest in promoting him to
- 29:34Speaker 1: the senior team, one hundred and fourteen being the total
- 29:37Speaker 1: number of races he'll be competing for the brand if
- 29:39Speaker 1: he leaves at the end of next season. As I guess,
- 29:42Speaker 1: we sort of expect him to. Now. Just tremendous shit
- 29:45Speaker 1: housery from Red Bulls driver management program is it. It's
- 29:48Speaker 1: got a team that's specifically established to feed Red Bull Racing,
- 29:51Speaker 1: and they continue to sign and more. I guess the
- 29:54Speaker 1: context of this it was just as he was suggesting
- 29:56Speaker 1: there was interest from other teams and if there was
- 29:58Speaker 1: no interest from Red Bull Racing, he would consider, uh,
- 30:00Speaker 1: you know, stretching his wings, putting his career in the
- 30:03Speaker 1: hands of someone else, and Red Bull says no, we've
- 30:05Speaker 1: got the contract and that's fine and contractually are allowed
- 30:08Speaker 1: to do so. But to have no obligator, to have
- 30:10Speaker 1: no even inkling to promote him, just seems like a
- 30:13Speaker 1: massive waste of time.
- 30:15Speaker 2: If one dispells, you know, the link to Honda and
- 30:18Speaker 2: ignores that. But yes, I hardly agree. It does seem
- 30:21Speaker 2: a bit rough on. So you take those points away
- 30:25Speaker 2: from Red Bull, not from Yuki Sonoda.
- 30:27Speaker 1: No from Red By.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:28Speaker 1: No, absolutely, he's had enough theoretical points taken off his career.
- 30:32Speaker 1: I suppose, hasn't he so after Red Bull?
- 30:34Speaker 2: Well, yeah, that makes that makes a lot of sense,
- 30:36Speaker 2: doesn't it. It's it's it's harsh, But that's the game
- 30:40Speaker 2: we play, isn't it.
- 30:41Speaker 1: So it is. There's no forgiveness. There's no soft points
- 30:45Speaker 1: here in.
- 30:47Speaker 2: There really aren't there.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Very few points at all.
- 30:50Speaker 2: In fact, well, you're a better chance of losing them
- 30:53Speaker 2: than scoring them in fairness, And on that theme, yes,
- 30:58Speaker 2: and sticking with the kicking the ball while it's down. Ye,
- 31:02Speaker 2: I'm going to take one nine hundred and eighty five
- 31:05Speaker 2: points off of RB slash Racing Bulls slash Alpha TOWI
- 31:10Speaker 2: slash uh, Tororosso for besmirching the Minardi name the marketing.
- 31:20Speaker 2: The word you used before was magnificent shit housery. That's
- 31:23Speaker 2: gone on. Yeah, Minardi entered the sport into Formula one
- 31:29Speaker 2: is in nineteen eighty five, and it ran as Minardi
- 31:32Speaker 2: pretty much all the way through until it was about
- 31:34Speaker 2: two thousand and five. Yeah, two thousand and five, when
- 31:37Speaker 2: two thousand and six when Red Bull took it over
- 31:39Speaker 2: as Torosso, and then it's had more name changes than
- 31:43Speaker 2: hot lunches since then. But yeah, so, nineteen hundred and
- 31:48Speaker 2: eighty five points coming off of RB slash Racing bulls slash. Whatever,
- 31:54Speaker 2: can we can we preemptibly take points away from next season?
- 31:57Speaker 1: Yeah? Maybe maybe after we doll out the final championship positions,
- 32:02Speaker 1: we can reset the tally as we see fit. Finally,
- 32:06Speaker 1: I'm taking eighteen million points off Sergio Perez for in
- 32:13Speaker 1: September tweeting a meme that he would not be leaving
- 32:16Speaker 1: Red Bull, a tweet scene by eighteen million people only
- 32:19Speaker 1: two months later leave red Bull. So good in fact,
- 32:23Speaker 1: that the users on x or Twitter as formerly Twitter,
- 32:27Speaker 1: to keep with the Minardi theme, have a subjected it
- 32:30Speaker 1: to a community note saying no, in fact, he did leave,
- 32:34Speaker 1: I think effectively eighteen million times lying about his contract intention.
- 32:38Speaker 1: I'm sure, and I'm sure his intention was not to leave.
- 32:40Speaker 1: But nonetheless, eighteen million points of that's that's fantastic.
- 32:45Speaker 2: I deeply appreciate that for all sorts of reasons, because
- 32:51Speaker 2: it's just the arbitrary application of points.
- 32:54Speaker 1: That's what we stand for.
- 32:56Speaker 2: That is everything the Alternative Championship stands for. The very
- 33:00Speaker 2: foundation of the competition. There is no rhyme nor reason,
- 33:06Speaker 2: no logic, often no mass in forced either. And yeah,
- 33:13Speaker 2: that's that's I like it. I like it a lot.
- 33:17Speaker 1: Well. That brings us to the end of the Alternative Championship, Matt.
- 33:20Speaker 1: They are all of the entries now calculated and tabulated,
- 33:24Speaker 1: and we can now reveal the winners well, of course
- 33:27Speaker 1: read out all them in reverse championship order. We want
- 33:29Speaker 1: to have a bit of hype building up now, Matt.
- 33:31Speaker 1: You've been calculating the numbers, so I'm going to leave
- 33:33Speaker 1: the top ten to you, but will make our way
- 33:36Speaker 1: up from the bottom. There were sixty six entries in
- 33:38Speaker 1: the end. Over how many weeks or episodes we've done
- 33:40Speaker 1: of this podcast, I'm going to start with number sixty
- 33:43Speaker 1: six on negative four Is this in millions? Four hundred
- 33:48Speaker 1: and seven million, nice one hundred and seven million, nine
- 33:51Speaker 1: hundred and ninety nine, nine hundred and eighty points, So
- 33:55Speaker 1: a number as large as it is specific to Ticketmaster
- 33:59Speaker 1: last on the Alternate Championship least.
- 34:01Speaker 2: There is a logic for that, because I never actually
- 34:04Speaker 2: gave it a number of points. This is one of
- 34:06Speaker 2: my awards, that's right, I remember, and I just decided
- 34:09Speaker 2: that it is going to finish last because it has
- 34:12Speaker 2: one job and his wholesale failed to deliver. And this
- 34:15Speaker 2: sort of relates to tickets going on South the Australian
- 34:17Speaker 2: grand Print. The system crashing and they're having to delay
- 34:19Speaker 2: it by year by year, by a day. And I
- 34:25Speaker 2: got stuck into them because I've got one job and
- 34:27Speaker 2: they failed miserably and then tried to blame someone else. Yes,
- 34:32Speaker 2: it's like my children, I didn't do it while you're
- 34:34Speaker 2: holding that hammer. So yeah, they're they're deliberately at the
- 34:41Speaker 2: bottom because their points were a multiplier of whoever finished.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Search points next worst.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Yes, that's it, that's it.
- 34:52Speaker 1: I like that a lot. Next worst was Formula one
- 34:55Speaker 1: itself on negative two hundred and three million, nine hundred
- 34:58Speaker 1: ninety nine, nine hundred and nine points. It was for
- 35:01Speaker 1: saying Las Vegas doesn't need a sprint because it's already
- 35:04Speaker 1: so fast, and that has nothing to do with a
- 35:08Speaker 1: reported sprint hosting. For your four million dollars accrued from
- 35:11Speaker 1: every circle that hosts a sprint. Let's look at third last.
- 35:14Speaker 1: It's Williams on negative two hundred million points.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's the the reinvestment that Dalton's made, the
- 35:22Speaker 2: over capitalization and not over capitalization, but they're close to
- 35:24Speaker 2: over capitalizing on that team. And just it wasn't a
- 35:27Speaker 2: great season, lots of crash damage, underwhelming. I thought it
- 35:32Speaker 2: was poor to bring Logan Sargent out of the car
- 35:35Speaker 2: and the Australian Grand Prix just a few decisions through
- 35:39Speaker 2: the year I didn't like, and so when there was
- 35:41Speaker 2: an excuse to give it a two hundred million dollar deduction,
- 35:44Speaker 2: I took it very good.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Next on the list in sixty thirty Sergio Perez, most
- 35:49Speaker 1: of which is his negative eighteen million points from just
- 35:52Speaker 1: a few moments ago. James vowed sixty second. I believe
- 35:55Speaker 1: I gave him a positive number. Maybe it was just
- 35:57Speaker 1: one point because he did because he mentioned that Franco
- 36:01Speaker 1: Colin No, not Franco Colinbindo, bigy, pardon who was he
- 36:05Speaker 1: talking about? Actually he said it was good mix. Schumacher
- 36:07Speaker 1: of course, that he would be good but not great
- 36:10Speaker 1: in justifying Franco colobinto being promoted to the team, which
- 36:13Speaker 1: I thought was good. But you then subsequently took quite
- 36:16Speaker 1: a few points off him.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Yeah, for much the same reason as I did with Williams.
- 36:20Speaker 2: I didn't agree with some of the decisions, so I
- 36:22Speaker 2: found a way to give him a whack and I
- 36:25Speaker 2: took a lazy one hundred and sixty eight thousand off him.
- 36:30Speaker 2: I mean, I think we said at the time that
- 36:31Speaker 2: he needed a big back half of the year. He
- 36:33Speaker 2: just didn't deliver, did he.
- 36:34Speaker 1: No, he just did never really recover from that big blow.
- 36:37Speaker 1: In fact, I think the one point it must have
- 36:39Speaker 1: been the same week or a similar week as the
- 36:41Speaker 1: British Grand Prix, which lost one hundred and sixty eight
- 36:44Speaker 1: thousand points. I believe this is to do with the
- 36:48Speaker 1: ticket sellout situation. On Sunday there were several tickets still available.
- 36:52Speaker 2: I think it was this was due to the capacity
- 36:55Speaker 2: and claim it was a sellout crowd just like from memory, Qatar.
- 37:00Speaker 1: I mean that's always helps when they're in seats.
- 37:04Speaker 2: I was going to say, well, there's plenty of seats,
- 37:06Speaker 2: but only the very few tickets very hard to come by,
- 37:09Speaker 2: not because not because they're in high demand, but because
- 37:11Speaker 2: there's only about six of them.
- 37:13Speaker 1: I like that. It's a country of many seats for
- 37:15Speaker 1: few tickets. I like that a lot. Sixtieth in the
- 37:21Speaker 1: order on negative ten thousand points is Johnny Herbert.
- 37:25Speaker 2: For his comments as a pundit while also being as steward.
- 37:29Speaker 2: So his punditary comments on the dishing out of a
- 37:32Speaker 2: penalty that he himself dished out yes to Maxim Staffin
- 37:36Speaker 2: at the Singapore Grand Prix and then in Mexico as well,
- 37:41Speaker 2: and then the inconsistency there because he gave a ten
- 37:44Speaker 2: thousand dollars fine. I think it was yes' to char
- 37:48Speaker 2: Leclair rather than community service. So I think Johnny should
- 37:52Speaker 2: pick up the tab for that one.
- 37:53Speaker 1: So I should, and with so many negative points, I'm
- 37:55Speaker 1: sure he'll be in a good position to do so.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Fifty ninth in the order is our old friend RB
- 38:02Speaker 1: on negative twenty two hundred and eighty seven points. Whatever
- 38:06Speaker 1: this was awarded for it feels well deserved. If anything,
- 38:08Speaker 1: there should have been more points off.
- 38:10Speaker 2: It feels a bit like that, and a lot of
- 38:11Speaker 2: those were We're today because RB is, of course Minardi.
- 38:15Speaker 1: Yes, well, yes, I.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Should always be remembered and I'm with you. Probably deserved
- 38:19Speaker 2: more points off.
- 38:20Speaker 1: Negative twenty twelve. Fifty eighth in the order is Alpine.
- 38:24Speaker 2: It was passing off a twenty twelve spect Lotus as
- 38:28Speaker 2: an Alpine good would would Jack do? And running up
- 38:31Speaker 2: the hill in that car? I thought that was a
- 38:33Speaker 2: little bit dishonest. I didn't like it, so I took
- 38:37Speaker 2: points off one point for every year it was a
- 38:40Speaker 2: twenty twelve Spect car, So twenty twelve came off there
- 38:43Speaker 2: tally and alas there was no miraculous second and third
- 38:47Speaker 2: place finishing the Alternative championship for them to salvage that
- 38:50Speaker 2: that performance.
- 38:51Speaker 1: You better believe there'll be more of that in the
- 38:53Speaker 1: all in team launch in early next year, because I
- 38:57Speaker 1: suspect there won't be too many real powers.
- 39:00Speaker 2: At that lown lots of points off.
- 39:01Speaker 1: He's a personal favorite of mine. I'll let you take
- 39:03Speaker 1: over the next few after this. It's fifty seventh in
- 39:06Speaker 1: the order, negative one thousand points off Shane Howard, the
- 39:09Speaker 1: Supercars CEO. I remember this one well. This was points
- 39:14Speaker 1: off for claiming he was showing respects to Daniel Ricardo
- 39:17Speaker 1: by saying he'd only be contacted at the appropriate time
- 39:20Speaker 1: about a possible Supercars drive simultaneously in the week building
- 39:24Speaker 1: up to the Baptist one thousand to make publicity stunt
- 39:26Speaker 1: out of it. Thought that was tremendously disingenuous and that
- 39:29Speaker 1: was a thousand points off.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Yeah again, probably deserve more. Yes, number fifty six with
- 39:35Speaker 2: tied on negative one thousand, but because it was scored
- 39:39Speaker 2: earlier in the championship, it I ranks higher. An unnamed
- 39:44Speaker 2: McClaren manager, Yes and Memory says this was one of yours, yes,
- 39:48Speaker 2: and was for coining the phrase Papayo rule.
- 39:51Speaker 1: That is correct. Again another in retrospect, probably someone who
- 39:54Speaker 1: should have got more points taken off them because that
- 39:57Speaker 1: was surely one of the low points of the year,
- 39:59Speaker 1: the phrase papie rus and thoroughly.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Deserved the irony being that at the end of the
- 40:04Speaker 2: year Papia did rule. Look, they got us there they did.
- 40:08Speaker 2: They did one spot high of fifty fifth FA President
- 40:11Speaker 2: m Hume Ben Salam minus seven hundred and sixty.
- 40:14Speaker 1: I certainly remember taking points off him for I believe
- 40:17Speaker 1: the phrase was moralizing immorlly when he said drivers shouldn't
- 40:21Speaker 1: swear and then likening them to rappers in obviously racial language.
- 40:25Speaker 1: So there was at least some points off for that,
- 40:28Speaker 1: probably points off for a variety of other things. Let's
- 40:31Speaker 1: be honest, he's not had the cleanness of seasons, has
- 40:33Speaker 1: old made mbs, but you can't say he hasn't had
- 40:36Speaker 1: to go.
- 40:38Speaker 2: He's got stuck in there. Yeah, he got stuck if yeah,
- 40:41Speaker 2: if nothing else, you can say he's in a red
- 40:43Speaker 2: hot go just to prove how ridiculous the alternative championship
- 40:50Speaker 2: is in fifty fourth on minus seven hundred and six points,
- 40:54Speaker 2: is our world champion max of stuff?
- 40:56Speaker 1: Oh there you go.
- 40:57Speaker 2: He's not even He's not even broken the top fifty
- 41:01Speaker 2: one spot behind Toto Wolf on minus four hundred and
- 41:04Speaker 2: seventy one. I do remember many of Toto clearly something
- 41:08Speaker 2: to do with shelf life here.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Yeah, so I from memory it was for claiming the comments.
- 41:13Speaker 1: The shelf Life comments, which were published in an extract
- 41:15Speaker 1: from that Mercedes book, were taken out of context, despite
- 41:18Speaker 1: the fact he clearly would have authorized all those comments
- 41:20Speaker 1: the way they were printed in the book and did
- 41:23Speaker 1: a small media tour about the book after that. I
- 41:27Speaker 1: just thought that was tremendously disingenuous and absolutely warranted some
- 41:29Speaker 1: points off.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and he'll be most frustrated because he's finished once
- 41:34Speaker 2: again behind Christian Horner and minus three hundred and twenty five.
- 41:38Speaker 2: Christian said a few silly things over the course of
- 41:40Speaker 2: the year, and a couple of really awkward interviews. There
- 41:44Speaker 2: was one with was Sky Where was that? That was
- 41:47Speaker 2: a really awkward interview with Janika Patrick just.
- 41:49Speaker 1: After the mid season break. I believe it when they
- 41:51Speaker 1: did they'd retained Sergio Perry.
- 41:53Speaker 2: It was gloriously awkward, But I can't remember. I thought
- 41:57Speaker 2: probably would have given points to that, because that's just
- 41:59Speaker 2: good tell.
- 42:00Speaker 1: Well. I remember I'd have quite a few points off
- 42:03Speaker 1: in Mexico because of his pretty horrendous defense of Max
- 42:06Speaker 1: Mustaffan's driving against Lando Norris. I remember from him saying
- 42:10Speaker 1: he had literally printed out to use a Toto Wolf
- 42:13Speaker 1: quote that I think he used without realizing it Lando
- 42:16Speaker 1: Norris's telemetry to prove he wouldn't have made the corner
- 42:19Speaker 1: and therefore Max didn't deserve the penalty, saying exactly the
- 42:23Speaker 1: opposite of what he said a week earlier in the
- 42:25Speaker 1: US when he was also defending the staff in the
- 42:27Speaker 1: opposite incident, and then despite all of the evidence saying
- 42:30Speaker 1: he wasn't going to appeel any of the decisions. So
- 42:33Speaker 1: I think he deserved a lot of points off over
- 42:35Speaker 1: the course of what has felt like a pretty insincere
- 42:37Speaker 1: year from Christian Horner. But I guess he won the
- 42:39Speaker 1: Driver's Championship.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Well, he's done better than well, better worse. He's done
- 42:44Speaker 2: worse than Sober because it's a new entrant as of
- 42:48Speaker 2: today with minus three hundred points, and it managed to
- 42:50Speaker 2: stay off our radar all season long, yes, and then
- 42:53Speaker 2: fell on its face at the final herd with minus
- 42:57Speaker 2: three hundred points. And I'm glad I encouraged you to
- 42:59Speaker 2: MultiMate because it just feels like it deserves to be
- 43:03Speaker 2: somewhere there in the.
- 43:04Speaker 1: Team, much like the actual team avoided the points tally
- 43:07Speaker 1: almost completely until the final week or so. Also, a
- 43:12Speaker 1: new entry was Red Bull at fiftieth minus one hundred
- 43:14Speaker 1: and fourteen points, for of course, the way it's dealt
- 43:18Speaker 1: with Yuki Sonoda over the course of the season, Forty
- 43:20Speaker 1: ninth is Lando Norris, briefly a Driver's Championship contender on
- 43:24Speaker 1: negative one hundred and six points.
- 43:27Speaker 2: I do remember being critical of him in Austria and
- 43:29Speaker 2: not finishing that race, not dragging the car at the
- 43:31Speaker 2: flag like Max did, and also the Hungarian Grand Prix
- 43:36Speaker 2: springs to mind, yes, the way it was a little
- 43:40Speaker 2: bit of deuce around letting oscar back through having been
- 43:46Speaker 2: given track position in the first instance to protect it
- 43:48Speaker 2: the second place.
- 43:48Speaker 1: And also memory serves in sau Paolo where he described
- 43:51Speaker 1: Max Bastappan's victory as being luck and not talent oing
- 43:54Speaker 1: to the red flag. I think points would have come
- 43:56Speaker 1: off there as well.
- 43:57Speaker 2: He's a very lucky four time world champion, that guy.
- 44:00Speaker 1: I'm very lucky.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Indeed.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Forty eight is anyone who used the phrase let them race?
- 44:03Speaker 1: I fully own that one. I'm tired of hearing it.
- 44:06Speaker 1: We all we should remember, but clearly no one does
- 44:09Speaker 1: what let them race era look like, which was the
- 44:11Speaker 1: Maximstaff and Lewis Hamilton deeply controversial twenty twenty one season
- 44:15Speaker 1: which there appeared to be no rules at all. Forty
- 44:18Speaker 1: seventh I believe this one was from you all, Team
- 44:20Speaker 1: Press press relations offices on negative one hundred points.
- 44:25Speaker 2: Yeah, there are a couple of instances during the year
- 44:27Speaker 2: where various members of the team's media teams have just
- 44:34Speaker 2: out and out lied forty six.
- 44:35Speaker 1: It's Perlly on negative ninety points, forty fifth, Ted Kravitz
- 44:40Speaker 1: on negative seventy five points. Lance Stroll got negative fifty
- 44:43Speaker 1: one points. Probably lucky to get away with just negative
- 44:45Speaker 1: fifty one points.
- 44:45Speaker 2: That would have presumably games just for being lent Stroll.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Rejoining through the wet gravel in Brazil probably. Oh yeah,
- 44:52Speaker 1: after having his car repaired, I was forty third on
- 44:55Speaker 1: negative forty seven points. It feels a bit harsh, but
- 44:58Speaker 1: I do remember you giving me these points for I
- 45:00Speaker 1: said something you didn't like. You didn't agree.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Yeah, it was the McLaren is. Yeah, McLaren is a
- 45:08Speaker 2: New Zealand team. It's not it's British. We've clarified this.
- 45:10Speaker 2: I actually I spoke to Liam about this and he
- 45:14Speaker 2: said I was making a joke and people have just
- 45:15Speaker 2: gone too far with it.
- 45:16Speaker 1: So basically what he deserves forty seven points off because
- 45:20Speaker 1: I agreed with it. I think it's I think if
- 45:22Speaker 1: red Bull's allowed to be Austrian despite being based in
- 45:25Speaker 1: Milton Keynes, then McLaren is allowed to be KIWI. So
- 45:30Speaker 1: I stand by that, all right? Where those negative forty
- 45:32Speaker 1: seven points with honor.
- 45:33Speaker 2: I will take forty seven points off of Liam Lawson
- 45:37Speaker 2: for you, for a sign of solidarity. I've taken forty
- 45:40Speaker 2: seven points of him. Again, it's not a voting round,
- 45:43Speaker 2: but who cares. It's the alternative championship. It doesn't matter.
- 45:45Speaker 1: That's fine, right McLaren strategists are forty second on negative
- 45:49Speaker 1: forty four points. I mean, there are so many races.
- 45:52Speaker 1: Presumably they accrued this app still under.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Constructor probably one for each mistake.
- 45:56Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, quite possibly. Forty first is Logan Sergeant negative
- 46:00Speaker 1: thirty seven points. Alex albon is fortieth on negative twenty
- 46:03Speaker 1: eight points, a modest negative points total, all.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Right, thirty nine the organizers of the Las Vegas Grand
- 46:09Speaker 2: Prix minus twenty seven points. I'm surprised is that low?
- 46:12Speaker 1: Yes? Well, I mean I believe this was for them,
- 46:13Speaker 1: also saying that they couldn't possibly have a sprint race
- 46:16Speaker 1: because the twenty seven openings to the track or something
- 46:19Speaker 1: like that didn't seem like a very good excuse at
- 46:21Speaker 1: the time. But still top thirty nine. That's not bad.
- 46:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Sitting thirty eight is Tom Coronell minus twenty five.
- 46:30Speaker 2: He is tired on points, but somehow behind someone who
- 46:34Speaker 2: doesn't exist, Sonny Hayes, also minus twenty five, and another
- 46:38Speaker 2: one of yours, if memory.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Serves, Yes, I think this is for not understanding how
- 46:42Speaker 1: motors board works. Being presumably a multiple racementing drive car
- 46:46Speaker 1: drives on the need for a car that, yes, this
- 46:49Speaker 1: is car built for combat, not for being fast on
- 46:52Speaker 1: the straits or something like that.
- 46:53Speaker 2: We can't beat him on the straits, so we have
- 46:54Speaker 2: to beat him in the curves.
- 46:55Speaker 1: Yes.
- 46:56Speaker 2: In thirty six on minus twenty four is has They
- 47:00Speaker 2: don't remember why. There was probably a reason, but I
- 47:02Speaker 2: don't remember it. Well.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Then let's move on to thirty fifth. McLaren negative fifteen points.
- 47:07Speaker 1: Probably could have folded this in with the strategists and
- 47:10Speaker 1: also the unnamed management figure, but they won the constructors Championship,
- 47:15Speaker 1: so you know what they can cop this one on
- 47:16Speaker 1: the chin. Thirty fourth is George Russell negative thirteen points.
- 47:20Speaker 1: But let's move up to thirty third, which is you,
- 47:22Speaker 1: Matt Coosh negative ten points.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Boring.
- 47:25Speaker 1: I think you.
- 47:27Speaker 2: Was boring there. We go. I think I think maintaining
- 47:30Speaker 2: tradition or just be boring.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Look his book self criticism is important. Thirty second goes
- 47:35Speaker 1: to the Circuit of the Americas with negative ten points.
- 47:38Speaker 1: I remember this one well. This was for organizing a
- 47:40Speaker 1: condolence's book for Daniel vccardo in the Paddock, despite the
- 47:43Speaker 1: fact he's not dead.
- 47:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, that was a bit weird and postal lever
- 47:48Speaker 2: social media and all sorts of stuff. It was odd.
- 47:50Speaker 1: Next in the order is US broadcaster or podcast host
- 47:54Speaker 1: I'm sure which is Howard Stern. He's thirty first, negative
- 47:57Speaker 1: ten points for not knowing who Lewis Hamilton is. In
- 48:01Speaker 1: an interview with vanquished presidential candidate Kamala Harris, who was
- 48:06Speaker 1: apparently a big fan of Formula one. Howard Stern never
- 48:08Speaker 1: heard of Lewis.
- 48:09Speaker 2: Yeah. Funnily enough, I've encountered someone else in the last
- 48:12Speaker 2: week or so he's never heard of Lewis Hamilton either.
- 48:13Speaker 2: So maybe we're just too wrapped up in our own
- 48:17Speaker 2: little bubble.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Maybe we are.
- 48:18Speaker 2: Let's go. Kimi Antonelli also on minus ten. He's in
- 48:22Speaker 2: the thirtieth place. I think this was throwing at the
- 48:24Speaker 2: fence in Monza during free practice one within two laps
- 48:28Speaker 2: of getting out on track.
- 48:29Speaker 1: Yes, that sounds totally believable and are warranted.
- 48:32Speaker 2: Next stuff, I'm looking forward to one of these in
- 48:33Speaker 2: a couple of year. But next up in twenty ninth
- 48:35Speaker 2: is Kyle Larson minus ten points for claiming he could
- 48:38Speaker 2: better Max for Staffan he was a better driver than
- 48:41Speaker 2: Max for Staffen was.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Yes, he said there'd be no question that they'd be
- 48:44Speaker 1: able to beat him in the same car yeap, despite
- 48:47Speaker 1: having no clear or obvious evidence for this claim.
- 48:50Speaker 2: Yeah, backed by a number of drivers who I'd never
- 48:53Speaker 2: heard of. Big fan of this one though. Twenty eighth,
- 48:57Speaker 2: also on minus ten the F one graphics department, the
- 49:00Speaker 2: Great Brittian Grand Prix, Yes.
- 49:02Speaker 1: The graphics behind the podium interviews, the Spanish Grand Prix.
- 49:05Speaker 1: I guess looking forward to the next race in Great Britain.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Minus nine points in twenty seventh is David Croft. Sadly,
- 49:13Speaker 2: that's our final negative point entry.
- 49:16Speaker 1: So more than half of the entry so in the negative.
- 49:18Speaker 2: In twenty six that our first positive entry on a
- 49:21Speaker 2: single point is a Achio Toyota.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Yes, I remember this well. It's for if memory serves
- 49:26Speaker 1: begging reporters and sub editors not to run headlines reading
- 49:30Speaker 1: the Toyota is returning to Formula one, and then we
- 49:32Speaker 1: all only to wake up the next morning and read
- 49:34Speaker 1: everywhere the Toyota, including an F one's own website. That's right,
- 49:37Speaker 1: including F one's very own website. The Toyota had returned
- 49:41Speaker 1: to Formula one. So it's one consolation point magnificent.
- 49:45Speaker 2: There's also one point for Lawrence Straw in twenty fifth.
- 49:48Speaker 2: Next up is Leo Leclair for a for stealing Instagram,
- 49:53Speaker 2: for dominating Instagram during the summer break. He's in twenty
- 49:56Speaker 2: fifth with three points. I mean, that's that's more than
- 50:00Speaker 2: I've got.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Yes, more than Akio Toyota, see one of the biggest
- 50:03Speaker 1: automotive companies in the world. Well done to him.
- 50:06Speaker 2: Twenty third Franco Colopinto for four points. I'm surprised he
- 50:10Speaker 2: stayed off our radar with a couple of the shunts
- 50:12Speaker 2: that he had towards the end of the year. But
- 50:14Speaker 2: a good play. Let's say, if you're in the positive,
- 50:16Speaker 2: you're doing pretty well. You are, so Franco Colopinto a
- 50:19Speaker 2: good result in twenty third with four points, could have
- 50:24Speaker 2: been so much worse for him, speaking the witch Mecca's
- 50:30Speaker 2: the Minati team boss five points in twenty second again
- 50:35Speaker 2: could have been so much worse, managed to stay off
- 50:36Speaker 2: the radar and avoid the carnage that surrounded RB which
- 50:39Speaker 2: ended up fifty nights.
- 50:40Speaker 1: Yes, and I believe that he got those points for
- 50:43Speaker 1: confessing even he didn't know what was going on with
- 50:45Speaker 1: Daniel Ricardo after the Singapore Grand Prix, and that he
- 50:48Speaker 1: would be good if someone told him. Yeah, so big, honest,
- 50:51Speaker 1: I think is what those points.
- 50:52Speaker 2: Before there's's a lesson of their team prs. There is
- 50:54Speaker 2: a lesson there. Next up is the FO Suprimo himself
- 51:00Speaker 2: on seven points. The stephanot to Monicali in twenty first.
- 51:02Speaker 1: Probably goes with the FIA as well on ten points.
- 51:05Speaker 1: I think some of these points were for actually doing
- 51:07Speaker 1: quite a good job in Brazil when the weather was
- 51:09Speaker 1: so bad and they willingly and freely rescheduled the weekend
- 51:12Speaker 1: when in the past they would never have done so.
- 51:14Speaker 1: They would have just committed themselves to running in the
- 51:15Speaker 1: rain and canceling everything. So everyone did a good job
- 51:19Speaker 1: in twenty I'm going to leave the top ten to you,
- 51:21Speaker 1: so I'm going to take the next ten, tied with
- 51:23Speaker 1: the FIA nineteen points is Jean Todd, someone who hasn't
- 51:26Speaker 1: run the FIA for quite a number of years, so
- 51:28Speaker 1: quite a baffling introduction, but I'm sure the points were
- 51:31Speaker 1: warranted one way or another to be in the top twenty.
- 51:35Speaker 1: Jack Dowan gets fourteen points. I believe this is for
- 51:37Speaker 1: choosing a number that Kimmy reichen And raced with. But
- 51:42Speaker 1: Kimmy Raikinon chose because there was just the number he
- 51:43Speaker 1: had at the time, the story behind it. But Jack's
- 51:46Speaker 1: given it a story, so good for him. Seventeen is
- 51:49Speaker 1: char Leclair seventeen thro other on fifteen points, perhaps just
- 51:53Speaker 1: for winning his home Grand Prix in Monaco. I don't
- 51:55Speaker 1: remember specific insting for this one. Nico Holkenberg sixteen points
- 52:00Speaker 1: just for being good. I suppose these all just feel
- 52:02Speaker 1: like very good good yeah, oh yes. Now. Lewis Hamilton
- 52:05Speaker 1: is fifteenth on nineteen points, perhaps winning his home Grand Prix,
- 52:08Speaker 1: but controversially, Charlotte Claire is fourteenth. Again this the twenty
- 52:13Speaker 1: five points must be for winning Monaco. I'm afraid I'm
- 52:16Speaker 1: not sure what the fifteen points before. Christian Mansell is thirteenth.
- 52:20Speaker 1: The Australian Formula two driver on forty six points. Now,
- 52:22Speaker 1: I remember giving him certainly some points for being on
- 52:25Speaker 1: the podium in Monaco and a variety of points over
- 52:29Speaker 1: the course of the year, but I don't remember exactly
- 52:32Speaker 1: where the forty six comes from.
- 52:33Speaker 2: I don't remember exactly where forty six was, but certainly
- 52:35Speaker 2: as a Boijan And he's good starting now too. And yeah,
- 52:38Speaker 2: if you follow him on on Twitter, if you don't,
- 52:40Speaker 2: go and follow him on Twitter, because he's hilarious, just
- 52:43Speaker 2: absolute banter man. It's it's easy. He's a good lad.
- 52:46Speaker 2: But I think I think it was basically just for
- 52:49Speaker 2: Azerbaijan and Formula two and all that good stuff.
- 52:53Speaker 1: Yes, which is good on him. Twelfth is Simon Lasenbye
- 52:57Speaker 1: Spider Pig.
- 52:58Speaker 2: Oh no, this is a spider pig fighter.
- 53:00Speaker 1: Pick very good. Eleventh is Toyota for coming back, well,
- 53:05Speaker 1: don't say coming back to Formula one. This is what
- 53:07Speaker 1: it was all about, for joining Haas in a very
- 53:10Speaker 1: roundabout way, but ensuring that they will be in Formuda
- 53:13Speaker 1: one with minimum expenses expended.
- 53:16Speaker 2: Which brings us to the top ten. And I feel
- 53:18Speaker 2: like we need some sort of big, big introduction, you know,
- 53:21Speaker 2: some sort of mantim musical number. Maybe get Neil Patrick
- 53:23Speaker 2: Harris out that sort of stuff, because in tenth place
- 53:29Speaker 2: we've got Oscar Piastri on sixty points.
- 53:31Speaker 1: Very nice.
- 53:32Speaker 2: It just seems like that's an accumulation of goodness. I
- 53:35Speaker 2: don't remember him saying anything particularly funny or outrageous. I
- 53:38Speaker 2: think it was just a case of doing a good
- 53:41Speaker 2: job in a few races, as a Bojan springs to mind.
- 53:43Speaker 1: Very good. I think that's warranted, does deserve many points
- 53:46Speaker 1: this year.
- 53:47Speaker 2: Voucheri Botas helped along nicely into ninth by the three
- 53:51Speaker 2: points I gave them today on a casual one hundred
- 53:54Speaker 2: and twenty one. I don't remember where the other one
- 53:56Speaker 2: hundred and eighteen come from, but the three for signing
- 54:00Speaker 2: with Mercedes have made all the difference. I do remember, though.
- 54:03Speaker 2: In eighth place on three hundred and twenty nine points
- 54:05Speaker 2: is Ralph Schumacher. Yes, because he made the announcement of
- 54:10Speaker 2: his personal life this year, which I think was fabulous.
- 54:13Speaker 2: So he got a point for every point that he
- 54:15Speaker 2: scored in his formul one career, which is three hundred
- 54:17Speaker 2: and twenty nine of them points. Structures changed since then,
- 54:21Speaker 2: so it's not really right. Probably scored more if he
- 54:24Speaker 2: was racing in modern Formula one, but three to twenty
- 54:27Speaker 2: nine points. I think that was a fair reward. He
- 54:29Speaker 2: sits one place behind a man on four hundred and
- 54:33Speaker 2: ninety five points Leam Lawson, which I was surprisingly high
- 54:37Speaker 2: for a bloke who's had eleven races, only.
- 54:38Speaker 1: Six of yes, very lucrative six races this season, isn't it.
- 54:42Speaker 2: I need to correct that. I need to take forty
- 54:44Speaker 2: seven points often that's four hundred and forty eight.
- 54:45Speaker 1: So still impressive, still impressive.
- 54:48Speaker 2: Makes makes no meaningful change to his position next place.
- 54:54Speaker 2: The already of this is not lost on me. Next
- 54:59Speaker 2: best or in sixth place, one nine hundred and sixty
- 55:03Speaker 2: nine points. It's Yuki Sonoda. The irony that Yuki beat
- 55:07Speaker 2: Liam by the order of what about four? Yes, that
- 55:14Speaker 2: that deeply amuses Yes.
- 55:16Speaker 1: And you gave him all those points, I believe for
- 55:17Speaker 1: racing in a nineteen sixty one crash helmet at goodwoe.
- 55:20Speaker 2: Yeah, he raised an over faous home. It's a good
- 55:23Speaker 2: which I thought that was that was kind of good.
- 55:25Speaker 2: I also gave all the next points one nine hundred
- 55:28Speaker 2: and ninety one because the DJ on the grid and
- 55:32Speaker 2: guitar played sells like teen spirit. It just put me
- 55:35Speaker 2: in a good mood, so I was bouncing around for
- 55:39Speaker 2: the rest of the day. That was worth a lot
- 55:41Speaker 2: of points. So you know, the DJ got nearly two
- 55:44Speaker 2: thousand points, because why not in fourth place Aston Martin
- 55:50Speaker 2: given that, given that Lawrence and Lancer both already appeared
- 55:53Speaker 2: on this a third entry for Auston Martin fourth place
- 55:57Speaker 2: with two and twenty four points, I think that's for
- 56:01Speaker 2: making the signing of twenty twenty.
- 56:03Speaker 1: Four as it should be, as we should remember it
- 56:05Speaker 1: for this year. We certainly won't remember them for their
- 56:06Speaker 1: on track results this year. Why not? They're off track
- 56:08Speaker 1: signing and.
- 56:10Speaker 2: In third place. I think we did big drum rolls
- 56:14Speaker 2: and all sorts of stuff. Maybe another musical number, bring
- 56:16Speaker 2: Neil Patrick Harris back in third place. We probably need
- 56:20Speaker 2: to change the name of this though, because it's Andretti
- 56:23Speaker 2: Ah Andretti in third place on twenty and twenty six points,
- 56:29Speaker 2: presumably again one point for the year in which they're
- 56:33Speaker 2: going to start in Formula one or propose to start
- 56:37Speaker 2: in Formula one. Do we need to refer them as
- 56:40Speaker 2: Andretti or Cadillac or GM or the team formerly known
- 56:43Speaker 2: as Andretti. It's a good question, is that we're just
- 56:45Speaker 2: simplifying call it Minardi. Ah, maybe we'll just do that now.
- 56:50Speaker 2: It brings us to second place. It was a big year,
- 56:54Speaker 2: fifty nine million points. He's been in a safe second
- 56:57Speaker 2: place for a long time, as safe as PA Championship
- 57:02Speaker 2: Adrian Newey.
- 57:03Speaker 1: Yes, I believe that's for every reported dollar he set
- 57:06Speaker 1: to earn from Aston Martin.
- 57:07Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's that's a big whore.
- 57:11Speaker 1: I mean fifty both in terms of points and in
- 57:14Speaker 1: terms of literally the money from Aston Mark.
- 57:17Speaker 2: But it's still like it's still not a not holding
- 57:22Speaker 2: a candle to first place. Absolute runaway winner on eight billion,
- 57:29Speaker 2: two hundred billion and one is Daniel Ricardo.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Yes, and this is of course the one point was
- 57:36Speaker 1: for the one point for fastest lape that he didn't
- 57:38Speaker 1: get in Singapore because he finished outside the top ten,
- 57:41Speaker 1: and the other eight billion, whatever it is, is for
- 57:44Speaker 1: every person on Earth. I believe because he won. The
- 57:47Speaker 1: fan Driver of the Day has a theoretical reach of
- 57:51Speaker 1: one hundred percent of the global population.
- 57:55Speaker 2: So I think I think the world wanted him to
- 57:58Speaker 2: go out in a high he didn't make, you know,
- 58:01Speaker 2: and the championship that doesn't matter, the World Championship, the
- 58:03Speaker 2: former word World Championship, but the one that does. He
- 58:06Speaker 2: is the inaugural champion of the Pit Talk Alternative Championship,
- 58:12Speaker 2: the one that everyone wants even though they don't know
- 58:15Speaker 2: it exists.
- 58:16Speaker 1: Yes, a worthy and deserved winner is Daniel Ricardo. And
- 58:19Speaker 1: on that note, that's all the time we have for
- 58:21Speaker 1: pit Talk today and indeed this season. Ahead of twenty
- 58:24Speaker 1: twenty five. You can subscribe to Pittalk wherever you get
- 58:26Speaker 1: your favorite podcasts, and you can leave us a rating
- 58:28Speaker 1: at review as well. You can give up to date
- 58:30Speaker 1: with all the latest on news throughout the off season
- 58:32Speaker 1: at Fox sports dot com dot Au and Speedcafe dot Com. Matt,
- 58:35Speaker 1: it's been a pleasure to talk you through this season,
- 58:37Speaker 1: of course, the Alternative Championships.
- 58:40Speaker 2: It's been a thing. The Alternative Championship has just run
- 58:42Speaker 2: away like a train with no breaks, just like the
- 58:46Speaker 2: end of the twenty twenty four season. It was a cracker.
- 58:49Speaker 2: Let's hope that twenty twenty five is just as good
- 58:51Speaker 2: as it gives us lots of storylines to pick out
- 58:53Speaker 2: and pull out and argue about and take points.
- 58:56Speaker 1: Off for absolutely and my name's been Michael Lomonado. Thanks
- 58:59Speaker 1: ver much for your company. We'll catch you next season.
