- 1:05Speaker 1: lady is putting herself through to raise money for a
- 1:07Speaker 1: cystic fibrocis charity. So this song, the first song is
- 1:17Speaker 1: going out to Henry Akson and Amy Owen, both members
- 1:21Speaker 1: of the Folks Then a running club. They are both
- 1:24Speaker 1: very keen runners and they're getting married on Sunday. It's
- 1:41Speaker 1: all looking for something dumb to do.
- 1:49Speaker 2: And then go on and marry you. Is it this
- 1:56Speaker 2: dancing juice?
- 1:59Speaker 1: As Bruno mar there, I think I want to marry you.
- 2:06Speaker 1: And that was for Henry Axson and Amy O, you know,
- 2:09Speaker 1: getting married on Sunday. And I'll be telling you a
- 2:13Speaker 1: little bit about the park run. Hopefully we're going to
- 2:15Speaker 1: have a wedding style park run on Saturday and you're
- 2:19Speaker 1: looking forward to that. So now then we got to
- 2:23Speaker 1: a lovely guesting today and I want to welcome Amy
- 2:26Speaker 1: Bumpstain from the hockey Club.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Hello.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Amy, how are you?
- 2:29Speaker 4: I'm good care how are you?
- 2:30Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 2:30Speaker 2: Excellent, lovely to see you.
- 2:31Speaker 1: It's been a while, but because I mean, it's that
- 2:34Speaker 1: you're so busy and the hockey club is so busy,
- 2:37Speaker 1: but so it's really nice to pin you down. So
- 2:41Speaker 1: but we're also going to talk about know you've changed roles.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Now your what's your other what's your day job? If
- 2:47Speaker 1: you like so?
- 2:49Speaker 4: I now work for the Aspinal Foundation based over at
- 2:53Speaker 4: Portland Wild Animal Park, working for the fundraising team that
- 2:57Speaker 4: deal with all the overseas projects that we run.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Okay, but you're doubling up today because we're going to
- 3:02Speaker 1: talk also about the runner how it's the five K
- 3:06Speaker 1: Easter rhino Rhino runers. That's right, that's what they call,
- 3:09Speaker 1: isn't it yet?
- 3:10Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 3:10Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 3:10Speaker 4: Five K Rhino run Yeah, happening this Sunday.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Good.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll tell you what. Every time I go over there,
- 3:15Speaker 1: I'll get told off. It's not a zoo, it's a
- 3:17Speaker 1: World animal park.
- 3:19Speaker 4: No, yeah, we're quite specifically yeah.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Yeah, right, so I'll have to remember that on Sunday. Okay,
- 3:23Speaker 1: So let's talk about the hockey club.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Now.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Now you're the communication officer, and first of all, I've
- 3:30Speaker 1: got to say you do an absolutely sterling job to
- 3:33Speaker 1: get all those scores and reports in my inbox by Monday.
- 3:39Speaker 1: So how are things generally down the hockey club? It
- 3:43Speaker 1: always seems thriving, got so many things. But I mean,
- 3:46Speaker 1: what's the buzz down there and the out lot like
- 3:48Speaker 1: at the moment.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Yeah, it's been a really good season. Obviously, every year
- 3:51Speaker 4: the club gets bigger. We've always got new players joining,
- 3:54Speaker 4: new juniors, new joined juniors joining. So yeah, the atmosphere
- 3:59Speaker 4: is great. We're such a wonderful welcoming club that once
- 4:03Speaker 4: people are in, they don't tend to leave either. And
- 4:05Speaker 4: we're really so family orientated that there really is a
- 4:08Speaker 4: place for everyone in the club.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean I don't cover it so much, and
- 4:12Speaker 1: I should do, really, But you've got to thrive in
- 4:15Speaker 1: youth section, haven't you.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Yeah we have. I think we've probably got about two
- 4:18Speaker 4: hundred and fifty juniors playing for us now. We welcome
- 4:20Speaker 4: them from age about four, kind of when they're in nursery,
- 4:24Speaker 4: they go into our little cage. Yeah, it's very much
- 4:27Speaker 4: kind of running around. It's fun for them, but give
- 4:28Speaker 4: them a bit of an intro to under eighteens.
- 4:31Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I mean, it's a I think basketball was probably one
- 4:35Speaker 1: of the vastest growing sports in Folkston that I can
- 4:38Speaker 1: remember from doing this job for a number of years,
- 4:41Speaker 1: But now our hockey is really getting close to it.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I mean, who would have thought all those years ago
- 4:46Speaker 1: that you'd have so many youngsters, you know, going back
- 4:48Speaker 1: over ten years when we used to be at the
- 4:50Speaker 1: old cricket pavilion, it's just grown and grown and grown,
- 4:53Speaker 1: isn't it. Yeah.
- 4:53Speaker 4: The difference from kind of when we were in our
- 4:55Speaker 4: old Pavilion based again kind of where we are now,
- 5:00Speaker 4: where we had sort of maybe fifty sixty juniors that
- 5:02Speaker 4: were more playing adult hockey to what we've got now.
- 5:05Speaker 4: We're a full dedicated junior section, a very successful junior
- 5:08Speaker 4: section as well. It's incredible and the kids are so
- 5:12Speaker 4: good now because they've got place and time to practice.
- 5:14Speaker 1: It is good because I don't know, years ago, hockey
- 5:17Speaker 1: was a bit of a I meant, going back even further,
- 5:20Speaker 1: when I grew up, it was either football or cricket.
- 5:22Speaker 1: There was nothing else around. But it's really attracting this. No,
- 5:26Speaker 1: it's great to see. Okay, so let's get back to
- 5:28Speaker 1: the seniors. I mean, is there any chance of any
- 5:31Speaker 1: victories or anything really brewing up in the seniors.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Yeah, we've had a good season. We've got four teams
- 5:39Speaker 4: at the moment that are looking at either guaranteed promotion
- 5:43Speaker 4: or guaranteed league winners. So our men's ones last week
- 5:48Speaker 4: were confirmed as champions as the Southeast East Division, so
- 5:52Speaker 4: they'll go into Southeast prem next year. Thanks to their
- 5:55Speaker 4: second place team slips up a little bit, but they
- 5:58Speaker 4: did the job, they got the win. They're guaranteed champions,
- 6:01Speaker 4: and then our men's thirds, and our men's sevens and
- 6:04Speaker 4: our Ladies fives are all guaranteed top two finishes, so
- 6:08Speaker 4: she'd all be getting promoted next season. And they've still
- 6:10Speaker 4: all got chances of finishing the top of their leads.
- 6:13Speaker 4: We're all very close.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I'll tell you, I'm having palpitations about your presentation night already.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Right, so's tell us what teams you play for.
- 6:26Speaker 4: So I played for the Ladies twos at the moment,
- 6:28Speaker 4: so we're kind of we bring a lot of juniors
- 6:30Speaker 4: through to then obviously bring up to our first eleven
- 6:33Speaker 4: and kind of yeah, we're that sort of that next level,
- 6:36Speaker 4: next level down.
- 6:37Speaker 2: So you're playing gold, don't you?
- 6:38Speaker 4: I do? Yes? Now they called the lunatic.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Now did see last week that used the lunatic in
- 6:45Speaker 2: the first team?
- 6:45Speaker 1: An?
- 6:45Speaker 2: There?
- 6:46Speaker 4: Yeah, little trip out are our regular Ladies ones keeper.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Unfortunately she was pulled away from work. So I had
- 6:52Speaker 4: a nice little road trip down to Eastbourne.
- 6:55Speaker 2: This is not like I got to play a couple of.
- 6:57Speaker 4: Yeah, a couple of hours in the minibus, but really
- 6:59Speaker 4: good group of girls. We had a nice day, really
- 7:01Speaker 4: good game. Eastbourne kind of really went for it, but
- 7:04Speaker 4: we went to tie with them. We went up. Unfortunately
- 7:07Speaker 4: weren't quite able to hold on for the win, but
- 7:09Speaker 4: it was a really good draw in a really even game.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Right, And is it a playing wise, is it a
- 7:15Speaker 1: big jump from the second team to the first team?
- 7:17Speaker 2: The standard?
- 7:18Speaker 4: Yeah, the standards, so our ladies playing in Southeast prem
- 7:22Speaker 4: Our first eleven, so it is a very very good standard.
- 7:24Speaker 4: It's kind of just below national league level. So there's
- 7:27Speaker 4: some very experienced players as very quick players, very quick,
- 7:32Speaker 4: very skillful youngsters that the older members of us in
- 7:35Speaker 4: the squad kind of a little bit resentful of. But no,
- 7:38Speaker 4: it's cracking and it's such a good standard to play out.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Excellent and it's not must be good for you actually,
- 7:44Speaker 1: just to like go up and experience it, knowing that
- 7:47Speaker 1: if you like, you haven't got to do it, if
- 7:48Speaker 1: you've been there and you haven't got to do it
- 7:50Speaker 1: every week, and then go back with the girls in
- 7:52Speaker 1: the second team. Did you get many other players coming
- 7:56Speaker 1: up from the second scene to the first team because
- 7:57Speaker 1: they are deserved to be out there.
- 7:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:00Speaker 4: I've had a few of our sort of teenagers this
- 8:02Speaker 4: year that have come into the twos at the beginning
- 8:04Speaker 4: of the season kind of had the first half of
- 8:06Speaker 4: the season with us and then have stepped up it
- 8:08Speaker 4: either to kind of fill some gaps when people aren't available,
- 8:11Speaker 4: or have kind of actually gone into the ones, yeah,
- 8:14Speaker 4: and have stayed there since they've gone up. So we
- 8:16Speaker 4: do try and get those juniors in really kind of
- 8:19Speaker 4: get them used to that quicker standard of hockey, and
- 8:21Speaker 4: then bring them up to the first team for the future.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Oh great, that's perfect. That's how it should be, isn't
- 8:26Speaker 1: It gives everybody in the second team and possibly below
- 8:30Speaker 1: the encouragement to know that they can make their way
- 8:32Speaker 1: up into the.
- 8:32Speaker 4: First Yeah, definitely. I mean we've and it works the
- 8:34Speaker 4: other way as well. So we've got players that are
- 8:37Speaker 4: currently playing in our ladies fives that are x first
- 8:40Speaker 4: eleven players gone away, had children. They can now bring
- 8:43Speaker 4: their experience to help kind of new players and young
- 8:46Speaker 4: players come through and develop.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I noticed that, actually, I've noticed a few names that
- 8:50Speaker 1: have been, if you like, in the lower teams. I thought,
- 8:52Speaker 1: I'm sure she was in the first team time years ago.
- 8:55Speaker 1: But it happens to everybody, you know, you know, especially
- 8:57Speaker 1: with ladies and things, and but it's just great to
- 9:01Speaker 1: see that they stay with the club isn't it.
- 9:03Speaker 4: It is, And a lot of them they may go away,
- 9:06Speaker 4: have children, they come back and then when their children
- 9:09Speaker 4: are all off based up.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:11Speaker 4: So we've got a few dads and sons playing together,
- 9:14Speaker 4: moms and daughters play together. It's a really lovely feel.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Yeah, you've got the fillers there, haven't you. And Janet's
- 9:19Speaker 2: still banging in the goals.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Yeah, Janet's still banging in the girls not as she's
- 9:23Speaker 4: not got a chance for the top scorer this year.
- 9:24Speaker 4: One of our gents has put away forty one this season.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Matt Carter, he plays for. He knows how to hit
- 9:31Speaker 4: a ball and he knows where the goal is.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Yeah, excellent, Right, So last was it last year or
- 9:36Speaker 1: the year before you put on an extra team?
- 9:39Speaker 2: Is there still? Are you like mixed out with teams now?
- 9:43Speaker 4: Nearly?
- 9:44Speaker 1: So.
- 9:44Speaker 4: We've gone to a men's eights this year, so that
- 9:46Speaker 4: sort of a dedicated development side for our men, which
- 9:49Speaker 4: means that kids when they hit twelve can come into
- 9:52Speaker 4: that side to start playing adult hockey to get used
- 9:55Speaker 4: to it before they then move up. We're debating a
- 9:59Speaker 4: lady sixes. Yeah, we've got to look at numbers and
- 10:03Speaker 4: we can't fill it with kids if you've got no
- 10:05Speaker 4: adults to games.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, we talked quickly about the we we mentioned
- 10:11Speaker 1: the youth teams, but there's two particular teams that are
- 10:15Speaker 1: in top of the tree in national finals.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Tell us about those.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Yes, we've got two of our youth teams going to
- 10:22Speaker 4: national finals this year are under fourteen boys and are
- 10:25Speaker 4: under eighteen girls. Actually the second year in a row
- 10:27Speaker 4: for our under fourteen boys, so they're looking to defend
- 10:30Speaker 4: their national title. So it's fantastic. It's great to see
- 10:34Speaker 4: these kids kind of really performing on a big stage
- 10:36Speaker 4: and putting our name on the map as well.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I was having a little chat with
- 10:41Speaker 1: dri Enn, who was the coach of the fourteens last
- 10:44Speaker 1: year who won the trophy with the boys, of course,
- 10:48Speaker 1: because they're still growing. Then she told me, and it's
- 10:52Speaker 1: amazing statistic that there's seven thems, seven of them still
- 10:56Speaker 1: playing in the under fourteens and the others have gone
- 10:59Speaker 1: up to the sixteenes. So those seven must have had
- 11:02Speaker 1: a lot of experience and have been been there and
- 11:05Speaker 1: are really really really pour it, aren't they.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Yeah, they definitely are, so where they were kind of
- 11:09Speaker 4: the younger members of the squad last year that maybe
- 11:12Speaker 4: didn't have the experience or didn't get as much game time.
- 11:15Speaker 4: They're now the older members of that squad who are
- 11:17Speaker 4: bringing the next the kind of the next year groups. Yeah,
- 11:20Speaker 4: really helping and supporting, supporting them.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Yeah, and they know that they you know, they'll be
- 11:24Speaker 1: going up to the under sixteenes next year.
- 11:26Speaker 2: So yeah.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Now I went down to watch the under fourteens in
- 11:30Speaker 1: the semi final and it's been spoken about, but we
- 11:35Speaker 1: must have a chat about this. And they were six
- 11:37Speaker 1: Niel up at halftime and I honestly thought it was
- 11:40Speaker 1: going to be ten or fifteen nil. But when they
- 11:44Speaker 1: came back on the pitch at halftime, it was like
- 11:46Speaker 1: two different teams turned up and the tables were turned.
- 11:50Speaker 4: It can happen sometimes. We actually said it ourselves on
- 11:52Speaker 4: Saturday that sometimes half time comes at the wrong time.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Yeah, you're actually you're in your rhythm, you're in your grouth.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Yeah, don't want to stop, no, No.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Obviously Gilford had a really good halftime team talk and
- 12:02Speaker 4: came back and really went for him. Fair played to
- 12:05Speaker 4: them too, Ye that close because Gilfrid a good side
- 12:07Speaker 4: and would be a good club.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, no, they know that second half, Well it
- 12:11Speaker 1: was some squeaky bump dy in the last five minutes.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Well we like to make it exactly was yeah. Yeah girls.
- 12:19Speaker 4: However, they just they just went.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Through and yeah they won six nil.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Then yeah they won six nil. They had a really
- 12:24Speaker 4: long trip up to Manchester because they would drawn against
- 12:27Speaker 4: the Isle of man So those girls came across and
- 12:29Speaker 4: the ferry eyes went up on the coach and yeah,
- 12:31Speaker 4: six nil win.
- 12:32Speaker 2: They really did the job right, excellent.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Okay, so we're going to take a little break now
- 12:37Speaker 1: and we might talk a little bit more hockey after
- 12:40Speaker 1: the break, but we will be talking about the the
- 12:43Speaker 1: Rhino Run and this is a song that and there's
- 12:47Speaker 1: a little story we've got to tell you about the
- 12:48Speaker 1: tigers and especially if you were in a high very's
- 12:52Speaker 1: vest and anyway, this is what I will be playing
- 12:55Speaker 1: when the runners set off to run around the animal park.
- 12:58Speaker 1: This is mud and tiger feet. Where there you go,
- 13:18Speaker 1: that's mud there tiger feet. And we're going to be
- 13:20Speaker 1: playing that on Sunday morning. If you are going over
- 13:23Speaker 1: to the how it's hang on. Let me get this right,
- 13:26Speaker 1: Wild Animal Park on Sunday for the five don't forget.
- 13:30Speaker 2: I've got a big note here.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Clocks go forward, right, remember that bring forward, So just
- 13:37Speaker 1: make sure you're going to set your clock. Well, if
- 13:40Speaker 1: you've got one of them digital trendy clocks, you know
- 13:43Speaker 1: they change overnight, don't they.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Right?
- 13:45Speaker 1: Okay, so Amy, you're still here and welcome back. So
- 13:50Speaker 1: I just wanted us going back to the hockey. Actually
- 13:52Speaker 1: we never spoke about the over thirty fives ladies. Now
- 13:57Speaker 1: they've been doing well, but they fell at the last two,
- 14:00Speaker 1: didn't they.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Yeah, we had a good run this year. Quite often
- 14:04Speaker 4: so we entered as an over thirty five team into
- 14:06Speaker 4: a national cup competition. Quite often we get drawn against
- 14:09Speaker 4: Canterbury who bring their their superstars out. They might have
- 14:12Speaker 4: an ex Olympian in their side, it's fine, and then
- 14:15Speaker 4: we normally fall at that hurdle. But this year England
- 14:17Speaker 4: Hockey changed how things set up, so even though we
- 14:20Speaker 4: lost to Canterbury, we then got to go into a
- 14:23Speaker 4: different layer of the competition. So we then had a
- 14:25Speaker 4: few games. We played Ashford, burnt ash Old Cranleians and
- 14:29Speaker 4: then we got drawn against Surbiton in the quarter final
- 14:32Speaker 4: and in hockey terms, Surbiton are a bit of a powerhouse.
- 14:35Speaker 4: We had a really good game. It was Neil nil
- 14:37Speaker 4: at halftime. Unfortunately we did end up losing for one,
- 14:40Speaker 4: but it was a really good game and it's really
- 14:42Speaker 4: nice for us to have to have a good run.
- 14:44Speaker 4: And we went back to their clubhouse. They've got all
- 14:46Speaker 4: their GB shirts. Yeah, three pitches and digital screens. It's
- 14:51Speaker 4: it's a whole other world.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Was it. Yeah, And it's I mean, we're lucky to
- 14:56Speaker 1: have the three Heels, but then you step up another
- 14:58Speaker 1: level to like National League clubs and that.
- 15:00Speaker 4: It's a big change. I mean, yeah, we're fantastically lucky.
- 15:03Speaker 4: We've what We've got so many other clubs in the
- 15:05Speaker 4: areas I reliant on schools or council pitches and things
- 15:09Speaker 4: like that. So for us to have our own ground,
- 15:11Speaker 4: our own club, we're incredibly lucky. But yeah, going up
- 15:14Speaker 4: to those National league teams, it's a whole different world.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Okay.
- 15:17Speaker 1: So just to wrap up the hockey side of things,
- 15:19Speaker 1: I mean, if there's anybody out there, perhaps parents have
- 15:21Speaker 1: got juniors moved to the area, how can I get
- 15:24Speaker 1: in touch with anybody at the hockey club?
- 15:26Speaker 4: Best thing to do so we can either go through
- 15:28Speaker 4: our website is FOHC dot co dot uk or we
- 15:31Speaker 4: are on all the socials, Facebook, Instagram, all those kind
- 15:35Speaker 4: of stuff, So give us a search. We're normally under
- 15:37Speaker 4: focused and ops. Yeah, and we'll be there and it
- 15:40Speaker 4: will probably be me that would reply excellent.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Okay, So we're going to move on to Sunday now,
- 15:45Speaker 1: So Sunday sees the five k. I'm not sure I've
- 15:49Speaker 1: been doing it a few years now, but it really
- 15:52Speaker 1: is a fun run around the animal park. So from
- 15:55Speaker 1: your perspective, because I'm always stuck at the start, finished
- 16:00Speaker 1: see the course of a race right now. You were
- 16:02Speaker 1: telling me that you walked walk the course during the week,
- 16:05Speaker 1: so what our runners expected to see on their route.
- 16:08Speaker 4: So it's cracking, Like it's such a different event compared
- 16:11Speaker 4: to any other five k you'll do. So you're literally
- 16:14Speaker 4: going past the start. You've got lions, tigers, there's giant anteaters,
- 16:19Speaker 4: there's gorillas, primates, anything you can think of. So it's
- 16:22Speaker 4: it's a pretty different kind of course to any kind
- 16:25Speaker 4: of other run.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Yeah, they do unique.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Yeah, and so if they let the tigers out, there'll
- 16:29Speaker 1: be a few PBS, I should think.
- 16:32Speaker 4: So, I hope. So we've got we've got a few
- 16:33Speaker 4: speedy animals over there.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Yeah. Now I've told this story several times because I
- 16:39Speaker 1: tried to keep the noise. When you've got a PA system,
- 16:41Speaker 1: it's a bit of a job to keep the noise down.
- 16:43Speaker 2: But every year I try and keep the noise down.
- 16:46Speaker 1: But the keeper comes out and says, or could you
- 16:49Speaker 1: could you think you could turn the music down? The
- 16:51Speaker 1: tigers are getting a bit restless, Is that right?
- 16:54Speaker 2: Do they?
- 16:54Speaker 4: Yeah, there's a few of them. They get they're a
- 16:56Speaker 4: little bit sensitive maybe sometimes. The thing I actually found
- 16:59Speaker 4: out when we were walking in the course the other
- 17:00Speaker 4: day is that the tigers really don't like the high
- 17:03Speaker 4: vis vests.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Oh dear, I think.
- 17:04Speaker 4: I don't know if it's the brightness or the color.
- 17:06Speaker 4: But yeah, we've had to do a little bit of
- 17:08Speaker 4: wiggling around with our marshals. Have you back to the
- 17:11Speaker 4: tiger put your high VI's on the front, just not
- 17:13Speaker 4: to freak them out.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Who's listening to this? If they're marshaling the cos they
- 17:18Speaker 1: don't put me by the tigers, that's fine, fine, Oh
- 17:21Speaker 1: that's great.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Okay.
- 17:22Speaker 1: So the money raised goes to the Espinal Foundation. Now
- 17:27Speaker 1: I briefly know what they do. But you tell me
- 17:29Speaker 1: what do the Espinal Foundation do.
- 17:31Speaker 4: So the Aspinal Foundation ourselves obviously we've got our partner
- 17:34Speaker 4: parks with Portland and Howlett's. But what we do is
- 17:37Speaker 4: we fundraise for our overseas projects. So we have projects
- 17:42Speaker 4: all over the world. Our main ones are in places
- 17:44Speaker 4: like Congo and Goabon. We've got Indonesia, South Africa where
- 17:48Speaker 4: we do kind of rewilding and kind of rescue of
- 17:52Speaker 4: wild animals, and we've got projects and partners kind of
- 17:55Speaker 4: in lots of other countries across the world as well.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Right, So, and is this an ongoing thing.
- 18:02Speaker 4: Yeah, So the Foundation was set up in nineteen eighty
- 18:04Speaker 4: four by John Aspinall obviously massive love of gorillas for
- 18:07Speaker 4: him and was very much wanted to get them back
- 18:10Speaker 4: into the wild. So it all started with that. Our
- 18:13Speaker 4: gorilla rewilding project is the most successful in the world.
- 18:16Speaker 4: We're the only people who do what we do so successfully.
- 18:19Speaker 4: Literally having meetings this morning about kind of how all
- 18:22Speaker 4: the different gorillas are doing and kind of where they
- 18:25Speaker 4: are and kind of how their families have grown and
- 18:27Speaker 4: things like that. So it's amazing to be able to
- 18:29Speaker 4: hear that we really do give them success and kind
- 18:32Speaker 4: of give them a new lease.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Of life, right and apart from the five K on Sunday,
- 18:38Speaker 1: is there any other events you do or is there
- 18:40Speaker 1: anything else that you know that people can help to.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Contribute to the Espinal Foundation?
- 18:46Speaker 4: So we can. Yeah, people can support through loads of
- 18:48Speaker 4: different ways. We kind of obviously we take one off donations,
- 18:51Speaker 4: We take regular sort of monthly direct debit donations. We
- 18:55Speaker 4: do a really big adoption project as well, where you
- 18:57Speaker 4: can adopt an animal through one of the ones that
- 19:00Speaker 4: we work with. And then yeah, that you can kind
- 19:02Speaker 4: of sponsor that adopt that you kind of get a
- 19:04Speaker 4: toy certificate, You get updates about kind of how the
- 19:07Speaker 4: animals are doing kind of both in park and out
- 19:09Speaker 4: in the wild, and you.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Get the schools involved at all. Did they come over
- 19:13Speaker 2: the projects?
- 19:14Speaker 4: Yeah, a lot of schools, local schools do come over.
- 19:17Speaker 4: As I was leaving this afternoon and well this morning
- 19:19Speaker 4: there was a primary school coming in, so yeah, they
- 19:21Speaker 4: get to come in. They do obviously go on their
- 19:23Speaker 4: safarias they learn from our rangers about kind of what
- 19:26Speaker 4: goes on in the parks and where these animals come from.
- 19:29Speaker 2: It's brilliant yea.
- 19:30Speaker 1: So it is I mean, it's nice to call them
- 19:34Speaker 1: wild animal parks is apart from zoo because the fact
- 19:38Speaker 1: that you're putting them back into the world is a
- 19:40Speaker 1: great thing that when you used to go as a kid,
- 19:43Speaker 1: used to go to London Zoo and they used to
- 19:45Speaker 1: ship the animals over and that was it for the
- 19:46Speaker 1: rest of their life, wasn't it. So it's the things
- 19:49Speaker 1: they've moved on in wildlife conservation. So anything else you
- 19:53Speaker 1: want to tell us about the trust the foundation.
- 19:57Speaker 4: So with the run, obviously we've called it the Rhino Run.
- 20:00Speaker 4: What this one is supporting is actually rewilding off three
- 20:03Speaker 4: black rhino back to Tanzania.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Are they Are they at Hamlets or are they at Portland?
- 20:08Speaker 4: They're currently at Portland and we've got three ladies, kiss them,
- 20:10Speaker 4: ut Chauna and Mizzy. I hope I'll pronounce all those right,
- 20:14Speaker 4: But yeah, they're they're at Portland and we're hoping, fingers
- 20:17Speaker 4: crossed towards the end of the year they'll be going
- 20:19Speaker 4: back out to Tanzania.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Really and have they been there since the birth or I.
- 20:23Speaker 4: Believe I believe at least a couple of them have
- 20:25Speaker 4: been there since birth.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean it's nice also that well
- 20:29Speaker 1: back in my running days, there's a path right at
- 20:31Speaker 1: the bottom there where you can run past.
- 20:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:34Speaker 1: It's better in the in the winter actually, because the
- 20:36Speaker 1: foliage doesn't grow up over the fence and you can
- 20:40Speaker 1: sneak in and see that there used to be the giraffes.
- 20:43Speaker 2: You could get right close up to the giraffe.
- 20:45Speaker 4: Yeah, became very popular during lockdown, that limb of that
- 20:48Speaker 4: loop because everyone's like, oh, I can go and spot
- 20:50Speaker 4: the giraffe. So yeah, we do know a lot of
- 20:52Speaker 4: people go for a wander around the on the canal.
- 20:54Speaker 4: But that's that's the joy of Portland, the fact that
- 20:57Speaker 4: the animals are kind of free to wander around and
- 21:00Speaker 4: they're not closed in.
- 21:02Speaker 1: I must tell you this that there was one time
- 21:04Speaker 1: where I was I was running down that path and
- 21:07Speaker 1: there was no foliage and there was a group of
- 21:10Speaker 1: school kids coming around in the great big three ton truck,
- 21:13Speaker 1: you know. So I had to look up the path
- 21:15Speaker 1: one way, I had to look a path up the
- 21:17Speaker 1: path another way.
- 21:18Speaker 2: There was no one about. So what I did.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I jumped up on the fence and I was rattling
- 21:22Speaker 1: the fence and making but making munkey noises out and
- 21:26Speaker 1: the old teachers going no, the animals are this way,
- 21:28Speaker 1: and they go.
- 21:28Speaker 4: Look at that man over there. No, that's not right anyway.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Nice work dot Org are the main event organizers on
- 21:38Speaker 1: the racing side of things, and I do understand there
- 21:42Speaker 1: are still plenty of spaces available. So if you're listening
- 21:45Speaker 1: to this and you want to there's a little bonus,
- 21:47Speaker 1: isn't there After runners go around the zoo, they can
- 21:50Speaker 1: go back in and.
- 21:51Speaker 4: Yeah, so anyone that's that enters into the five k,
- 21:54Speaker 4: they can go back into the park for the day
- 21:56Speaker 4: for free, and there's going to be a little discount
- 21:58Speaker 4: offer for any sort of friends and families are the
- 22:00Speaker 4: runners as well.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Okay, so the weather's looking good?
- 22:03Speaker 5: Is that right?
- 22:03Speaker 2: Aim?
- 22:03Speaker 4: If you had a look, yeah, weather's looking good. Nice
- 22:05Speaker 4: mother's day treat.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, so they are what a great way to
- 22:11Speaker 1: take your mum to the animal part and you know
- 22:17Speaker 1: it's such a great environment for runners to run around
- 22:20Speaker 1: to go to a Nice Work dot org and it
- 22:22Speaker 1: looks like but always check before you travel and you
- 22:25Speaker 1: might avoid disappointment that you might be able to enter
- 22:27Speaker 1: on the day. If it's a really nice race, then
- 22:30Speaker 1: there will be as always there will be a high
- 22:33Speaker 1: and late interest, and once we hit that mark of
- 22:37Speaker 1: nearly six hundred, then that's it. You know, for safety
- 22:39Speaker 1: and health and safety reasons, we can't let any more
- 22:42Speaker 1: people come in. So Amy, last word from you about
- 22:45Speaker 1: the Aspinal Foundation. Now you've not long been there, and
- 22:51Speaker 1: was you an animal lover or was it just you
- 22:52Speaker 1: wanted a job or a bit of both.
- 22:54Speaker 4: I've always been an animal lover kind of. Now that
- 22:56Speaker 4: I've got this job, I do have a memory of
- 22:58Speaker 4: kind of thinking when I was very small all that
- 23:00Speaker 4: I wanted to be a zoo keeper. So this is
- 23:02Speaker 4: probably the next best thing. So it's lovely getting to
- 23:05Speaker 4: work in an environment where, yeah, I can go around
- 23:08Speaker 4: and see all the animals and obviously do such a
- 23:10Speaker 4: wonderful thing to help them in the future.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Excellent, Well, Amy, thank you so much for coming in.
- 23:15Speaker 1: You're such a mind of information.
- 23:16Speaker 2: I love it.
- 23:17Speaker 1: It's so easy when you come in and we talk.
- 23:19Speaker 1: It's just weak to spend a couple of hours talking
- 23:21Speaker 1: about animals and hockey and sport. So thanks for telling
- 23:25Speaker 1: us about the hockey club. And we'll see you on Sunday.
- 23:29Speaker 4: Yeah, see you bright and early Sunday morning.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Yeah, don't wear high visves near the tigers though.
- 23:32Speaker 1: No. Okay, right, so thank you so much for that.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Now we're going to play a little song now, yeah,
- 23:40Speaker 1: this is a great one.
- 23:41Speaker 2: What we're going to do.
- 23:41Speaker 1: We're going to play this by hang On. I've just
- 23:44Speaker 1: got to move things around a little bit this year.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Is there we go. We've got Pink coming out.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Get the party started, which is what we're going to
- 23:51Speaker 1: do on Sunday. Pink, get the party started. That's what
- 24:19Speaker 1: we're going to do on Sunday. Well, what a lovely,
- 24:25Speaker 1: lovely lady is Amy. She's such a busy lady, active
- 24:27Speaker 1: all the time, and it's so nice that she can
- 24:29Speaker 1: get in here and have a chat. And then now
- 24:32Speaker 1: it's good that we speak about the hockey and the
- 24:34Speaker 1: Rhino run. Now I must get this in. I did promise,
- 24:38Speaker 1: made a few promises about this interview, so I might
- 24:41Speaker 1: have to neglect some of the sport. But while do
- 24:44Speaker 1: I'll pass some reports onto Ad for his Saturday show
- 24:48Speaker 1: and we're doing them then. Now. Next up is an
- 24:51Speaker 1: interview I recorded during the week between myself and an
- 24:54Speaker 1: amazing lady called Beth Wood. I'll say no more, stop
- 24:58Speaker 1: what you're doing and ever listen to the Please excuse
- 25:01Speaker 1: there's a little bit of distortion at the start of this,
- 25:03Speaker 1: but this is well worth a listen. I'm enjoyed today
- 25:06Speaker 1: by Beth Wood, who I set herself a massive challenge
- 25:09Speaker 1: of running ten marathons in two months, the final marathon
- 25:13Speaker 1: being in London on April the twenty seventh.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Good morning, Beth, how are you today?
- 25:17Speaker 5: I'm good? Thank you.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:18Speaker 2: You run a marathon yesterday, didn't you? Yes?
- 25:20Speaker 5: I did. Yeah.
- 25:21Speaker 2: So how's your legs today?
- 25:22Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 25:22Speaker 3: They feel all right, a bit sore, but we're you know,
- 25:25Speaker 3: I'm still walking around.
- 25:27Speaker 2: That's good. Okay.
- 25:29Speaker 1: So we before we talk about your ten marathon challenge,
- 25:31Speaker 1: tell us a little bit about yourself, about your background
- 25:34Speaker 1: and if you like, how long you've been running.
- 25:37Speaker 3: So yeah, So I'm Beth. I from Folkston and the
- 25:40Speaker 3: surrounds and area. I have been if for over thirty years.
- 25:43Speaker 3: We'll keep it about that to hide my age. I
- 25:45Speaker 3: was diagnosed with assistic fibrosis when.
- 25:48Speaker 5: I was two. I suppose one of the big things.
- 25:50Speaker 3: About me is I'm a mum's two lovely girls, one
- 25:53Speaker 3: who's two of one who's eight. I went to school
- 25:56Speaker 3: locally in Hawkinge and all my family have lived deaf
- 26:00Speaker 3: for well over eighty years.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Yeah, so you're right a local girl then, yes, yeah,
- 26:03Speaker 2: that's great. Yeah.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Now, if you like to some of our listeners that
- 26:07Speaker 1: might not understand what cystic fibrosis shortened per CF, tell
- 26:12Speaker 1: us a little bit about the actual problem yourself.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:16Speaker 3: So cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition, so both parents
- 26:22Speaker 3: have to carry the gene for people to get cystic
- 26:25Speaker 3: fibrosis and be born with it. One in twenty five
- 26:29Speaker 3: of us are carriers of the CF gene.
- 26:31Speaker 5: I was diagnosed when I was two.
- 26:33Speaker 3: It is a illness where you build up mucus in
- 26:37Speaker 3: all of your organs in your body, but the main
- 26:40Speaker 3: areas it will affect are your lungs. So for example,
- 26:44Speaker 3: my lung capacity is below half of what a standard
- 26:48Speaker 3: healthy woman of my age, size, weight and height would be.
- 26:52Speaker 3: It also affects your pancreas that builds up with mucus,
- 26:56Speaker 3: so most people with cystic fibrosis develop diabetes because our
- 27:01Speaker 3: prancrest doesn't create insulin. So yeah, it affects all of
- 27:04Speaker 3: your body. Is a build up of mucus around your body, right, Okay.
- 27:09Speaker 1: So is it something that can be treated or are
- 27:11Speaker 1: you stuck with it for your life?
- 27:13Speaker 3: So you're born with it and it's there forever. You
- 27:16Speaker 3: can't get rid of it. You can manage it, and
- 27:19Speaker 3: you can maintain it in many ways with treatment. So
- 27:21Speaker 3: I take above fifty tablets a day injections. I do
- 27:26Speaker 3: two to three rounds of phisio a day, which exercises
- 27:29Speaker 3: included in that whatever I can do to clear the
- 27:32Speaker 3: mucus in my lungs and the infection in my lungs.
- 27:34Speaker 3: So exo is a massive part of that. But there
- 27:37Speaker 3: is rounds of phissio. When I was younger, they used
- 27:40Speaker 3: to do. Probably an image that a lot of people
- 27:42Speaker 3: remember is the percussion, so you're back's padded, which is
- 27:45Speaker 3: where you clear the mucus.
- 27:47Speaker 5: I still do.
- 27:48Speaker 3: That now and yes, so it's a lot of treatment
- 27:51Speaker 3: in a day to keep it maintained as well as
- 27:54Speaker 3: you can. But it is something that is there forever.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Oh dear, I mean, there's something you.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Just got to manage and like you just get on
- 28:01Speaker 1: with it, really, isn't it.
- 28:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I always say my parents very much,
- 28:05Speaker 3: I love the mantra that c is what have it
- 28:07Speaker 3: doesn't have me.
- 28:08Speaker 5: It's there.
- 28:09Speaker 3: It's part of my daily life. You get up and
- 28:11Speaker 3: probably have a coffee in the morning. I get up
- 28:13Speaker 3: and I take fifty tablets and do my physio.
- 28:15Speaker 5: It's just part of my day, I know, no different.
- 28:18Speaker 1: So yeah, okay, So when you was growing up, I mean,
- 28:21Speaker 1: let's say when you was at school and kids are
- 28:23Speaker 1: running around, did it really affect you then? Yeah?
- 28:26Speaker 3: So when I was younger, my health wasn't too bad.
- 28:29Speaker 3: I remained active even when I was younger. But for example,
- 28:32Speaker 3: most children when they were off having their lunch, I
- 28:35Speaker 3: would be off doing physio with my physio at school,
- 28:38Speaker 3: so I would instead of going and having a lunch break,
- 28:41Speaker 3: I'd do half an hour of my physio at school instead.
- 28:44Speaker 5: So it affected me in that way. Really.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, that's so tough.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Cool really, So when you're younger, if you like, and
- 28:51Speaker 1: you're getting older, does the problem does it get worse better?
- 28:56Speaker 4: Yes?
- 28:56Speaker 3: I mean for myself, and I can only speak for myself, obviously,
- 29:00Speaker 3: there's eleven thousand of us and everyone is very different.
- 29:03Speaker 5: For me, it's it has got worse as I've got older.
- 29:06Speaker 3: The infections have got worse, the scarring all my lungs
- 29:09Speaker 3: has got worse. So my lung capacity has gradually got
- 29:13Speaker 3: worse over the years. But yeah, it's something that it
- 29:16Speaker 3: will get worse as you get older. Obviously, there are
- 29:19Speaker 3: treatments that come out nowadays, which is why we raise
- 29:22Speaker 3: money so that we can get these treatments approved that.
- 29:26Speaker 5: We do change that.
- 29:27Speaker 3: But yeah, unfortunately for me, my body now will just
- 29:30Speaker 3: decline as I get older.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Oh dear right, but you've been a tough cookie. I'm
- 29:35Speaker 2: sure you can manage that and get Yeah.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Yeah, right, okay, So let's turn their attention to running now,
- 29:39Speaker 1: So when did you start running?
- 29:41Speaker 3: I actually started running five years ago? It was, yeah,
- 29:44Speaker 3: about five years ago I started running and I ran
- 29:47Speaker 3: my first marathon.
- 29:50Speaker 5: But yeah, four or five.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Years ago, right, I mean when you started running? I
- 29:53Speaker 1: mean that sounds like it's probably the worst thing you
- 29:56Speaker 1: could do when you've got lungs full of stuff.
- 29:58Speaker 2: But what was it really? You challenge or did it
- 30:01Speaker 2: kind of clear it and help?
- 30:02Speaker 3: Yes, it was to start with, it was a challenge,
- 30:04Speaker 3: I mean to start with. I remember when I first
- 30:06Speaker 3: went out and tried to run a five.
- 30:08Speaker 5: K and I actually ended up in bed for a week.
- 30:11Speaker 5: My lungs just didn't like it. They were angry. So
- 30:14Speaker 5: I just started slow.
- 30:15Speaker 3: I started walking a bit, started running a bit, just
- 30:18Speaker 3: like I think everyone does when I start trying and
- 30:20Speaker 3: run and walk run, walk, run, And then I just
- 30:23Speaker 3: built up and realized that it's something that I wanted
- 30:25Speaker 3: to push myself with.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Tell us what made you think of running ten marathons?
- 30:30Speaker 1: I mean for most people, even like myself, the thought
- 30:33Speaker 1: of running one marathon back in the day was oh
- 30:36Speaker 1: my words, you know, three months training, but ten marathons
- 30:39Speaker 1: gool and tell us what made you think of that?
- 30:42Speaker 3: So I've always fundraised and done some sort of activity
- 30:46Speaker 3: for the charity to raise money and awareness for them,
- 30:48Speaker 3: and this is going to be my retirement challenge.
- 30:51Speaker 5: I'm not going to be doing anything big like this again.
- 30:54Speaker 3: And I went back and forth and just something some
- 30:58Speaker 3: probably in balance in my brain decided that ten felt
- 31:01Speaker 3: like a good round number. And then I came up
- 31:03Speaker 3: with the legacy ten. I wanted something to leave behind
- 31:06Speaker 3: for my gals that they would have that would stand
- 31:09Speaker 3: out for them.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Right, I mean, this is an amazing challenge. I mean
- 31:13Speaker 1: at the CF charity itself, I mean that you've been
- 31:17Speaker 1: in close contact with them.
- 31:18Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, So this year for twenty twenty five we
- 31:21Speaker 3: are I'm the ambassador for them for their fundraising to
- 31:25Speaker 3: get people out and doing these active things for them
- 31:28Speaker 3: to raise.
- 31:28Speaker 5: Money and awareness. But also just I think they've chosen.
- 31:32Speaker 3: Me this year as to be an ambassador, so that
- 31:34Speaker 3: it just brings a bit of hope. It hopefully is
- 31:36Speaker 3: going to push the next generations of people have to
- 31:39Speaker 3: get exercises straight away and get.
- 31:41Speaker 5: Their lungs moving and their body move in. So.
- 31:43Speaker 3: Yeah, so I've been working really closely with them. I've
- 31:46Speaker 3: been really blessed with them.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Right, I mean, if there's a research that you're going
- 31:49Speaker 1: on into, you know, trying to improve people's.
- 31:52Speaker 3: Lives in that, yeah, absolutely, probably more now so than ever.
- 31:55Speaker 3: I think they're doing an awful lot of work into
- 31:58Speaker 3: new treatments and new medications, trying to push for the
- 32:02Speaker 3: ten percent of people see that there is nothing for
- 32:05Speaker 3: it the minute, trying to make sure we can find
- 32:07Speaker 3: something for them. I don't think I've probably ever seen
- 32:09Speaker 3: so much research.
- 32:10Speaker 5: And st turn into it is at the moment.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I suppose that I've been an ambassador, then sometimes
- 32:14Speaker 1: you see what goes on on the other side of
- 32:16Speaker 1: the fence instead of just running. You know what goes on,
- 32:19Speaker 1: you know with research and fundraising, and.
- 32:22Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 32:23Speaker 1: You're supposed to do the Hastings Half yesterday and then
- 32:26Speaker 1: do another half on top, but the Hastings was canceled
- 32:29Speaker 1: due to unfortunate circumstances.
- 32:31Speaker 2: So what did you do yesterday?
- 32:32Speaker 5: Yesterday?
- 32:33Speaker 3: I just went up and actually found a friend who
- 32:35Speaker 3: was doing Hastings Half anyway, so I did. I did
- 32:38Speaker 3: a half, and then I found my friend who was
- 32:42Speaker 3: also doing Hastings Half, and we ran the second half
- 32:45Speaker 3: together and completed the full marathon. So she did the
- 32:48Speaker 3: second half of it with me, so I was run
- 32:50Speaker 3: it by myself. I just went and it was so
- 32:53Speaker 3: lovely yesterday to see loads of people that were meant
- 32:55Speaker 3: to be doing Hastings Half actually still outdoing their half,
- 32:58Speaker 3: still raising their money, still pushing themselves to do.
- 33:01Speaker 5: It, and it was really nice. Actually I love to
- 33:03Speaker 5: see them.
- 33:03Speaker 2: Yeah, it was.
- 33:04Speaker 1: It was a massive shame that it happened, because it
- 33:07Speaker 1: does take almost a year to organize something like a
- 33:09Speaker 1: Hastings Half, a great big turnounced like a big city marathon.
- 33:13Speaker 1: I went down and watched it last year. I mean,
- 33:15Speaker 1: where else have you done your marathons.
- 33:18Speaker 3: I've done a few Folkston, just around the streets of Folkstone,
- 33:22Speaker 3: Ryan hast Is. I have actually run a marathon in
- 33:25Speaker 3: around Ryan Hastings already and then I've got so that's
- 33:29Speaker 3: five I've done now, so sore, halfway there, halfway there, yeah,
- 33:33Speaker 3: halfway point done.
- 33:34Speaker 2: How does that mentally sound?
- 33:36Speaker 1: I mean, does you think that you're on the sort
- 33:37Speaker 1: of downward slide now or do you need to get
- 33:40Speaker 1: another one?
- 33:41Speaker 3: I feel like six feels like the down would count
- 33:43Speaker 3: at the minute. I'm still like I've got to do
- 33:45Speaker 3: the same thing all over again. But no, it feels
- 33:48Speaker 3: nice to tick halfway off. I've only got four left
- 33:51Speaker 3: on my own now and then London.
- 33:53Speaker 1: So and apart from mucistic vibrosis, I mean as you've
- 33:56Speaker 1: abody been standing up with any sort of you know,
- 33:59Speaker 1: in is to your legs or anything like that.
- 34:01Speaker 3: I injured my foot on Marason one, about five miles in.
- 34:05Speaker 3: I'd like to pretend it was glamorous, but a twisted
- 34:08Speaker 3: man called waiting at a traffic light and that was.
- 34:11Speaker 5: A bit of a challenge.
- 34:12Speaker 3: But I've rehabed that well and at the moment, touch
- 34:15Speaker 3: wood and everything that's worthy that I seem to be.
- 34:19Speaker 3: I mean, I was back up and I was training
- 34:20Speaker 3: this morning to stretch my legs out and move my legs.
- 34:23Speaker 3: So I'm doing something right. My body is still moving.
- 34:28Speaker 1: That's good news. Yeah, so they've got to keep on moving. Okay,
- 34:32Speaker 1: let's turn our attention to the day. Is it a
- 34:34Speaker 1: day for you or is it a weekend?
- 34:36Speaker 5: It'll be the weekend.
- 34:36Speaker 3: So I'm going to go up to London on Saturday
- 34:40Speaker 3: to the Excel where they have the big Marason show.
- 34:43Speaker 3: I'll be there for the day with the charity, going around,
- 34:46Speaker 3: just soaking it in. I love I love the whole
- 34:48Speaker 3: weekend is that. I love Marason Weekend, even if I
- 34:51Speaker 3: don't run the.
- 34:53Speaker 5: Best things ever. So I'm going to be there for
- 34:55Speaker 5: the day. I'll be there with a charity.
- 34:57Speaker 3: Doing some bits for them, going around and visiting, just
- 35:01Speaker 3: to see a few other stands while I'm there and
- 35:03Speaker 3: getting ready and getting my head in the game for Sunday,
- 35:06Speaker 3: but also just trying to find some time to rest
- 35:08Speaker 3: my body a bit ahead of Sunday.
- 35:10Speaker 2: And maybe you probably won't.
- 35:12Speaker 5: Oh, probably will. It's the first night i'll be away
- 35:14Speaker 5: from I'll probably going to very much be a bed
- 35:17Speaker 5: at seven.
- 35:18Speaker 1: O'clock and your family are they just coming up for
- 35:23Speaker 1: the day the next day.
- 35:24Speaker 3: So it's going to be split. My youngest will be
- 35:26Speaker 3: at home. She's only just turned to so she's a
- 35:28Speaker 3: bit young fresh.
- 35:29Speaker 2: So you've got two daughters, Yes, I've.
- 35:32Speaker 3: Got thea who's two, and Aurora, who is eight. Aurora
- 35:37Speaker 3: for the first time, will we come into London. She's
- 35:39Speaker 3: going to come to the whole weekend with me, the
- 35:42Speaker 3: whole thing in and secretly.
- 35:44Speaker 5: Mummy is maybe hoping that she might catch a bit
- 35:46Speaker 5: of running bug.
- 35:49Speaker 2: And the rest of the family.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Are they going to be dotted around London at sort
- 35:52Speaker 1: of locations or are they going to be at a
- 35:56Speaker 1: cystic Fibrosi's got cheerstation, Yeah they have, They've got cheerstation.
- 35:59Speaker 5: So the girl's dad will.
- 36:01Speaker 3: Be up in London with us for the weekend. He's
- 36:03Speaker 3: going to come and be dragged around everywhere with us
- 36:07Speaker 3: as well, and then Sunday he'll be with my eldest
- 36:12Speaker 3: and one of my best friends will be with them
- 36:15Speaker 3: as well, following around. They've got their miles that they
- 36:18Speaker 3: will be dotted at and then the trust have got
- 36:21Speaker 3: stands every I think maybe five six miles here there
- 36:25Speaker 3: in London Bridge, which is always the best.
- 36:27Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah Bridge, Yeah yeah.
- 36:30Speaker 1: But you know when I did the London Marathon, I
- 36:33Speaker 1: got stop for an interview. He wanted to interview, but
- 36:36Speaker 1: I never made a TV probably because I wasn't dressed
- 36:39Speaker 1: as a banana or a crocodile or something. Okay, well,
- 36:44Speaker 1: I mean it's time to wrap it up now. So
- 36:49Speaker 1: we've just got to get you to say your thank yous,
- 36:51Speaker 1: your hellos, tell us about your just giving page, so
- 36:55Speaker 1: over your gun.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:56Speaker 3: So the first two thank yous, I mean they have
- 36:59Speaker 3: to go to my girls Jess and Hattie, who both
- 37:03Speaker 3: of them have run half of a marathon with me,
- 37:06Speaker 3: which I think in itself should be thanked because they've
- 37:10Speaker 3: taken time out of their lives to push their bodies.
- 37:13Speaker 5: So that I'm not on my own.
- 37:14Speaker 3: And Kate who actually ran twenty miles off one of
- 37:17Speaker 3: them with me as well. They're all from my gym,
- 37:20Speaker 3: so I'm very grateful to them, my physiote here who
- 37:24Speaker 3: is keeping my legs ticking over and thank you to everybody,
- 37:28Speaker 3: like everybody who has sent messages when I'm out running.
- 37:33Speaker 3: The messages I get throughout they keep going, keep moving
- 37:37Speaker 3: that I mean without them, I mean I don't think
- 37:39Speaker 3: i'd probably get to the twenty six miles. So thank
- 37:42Speaker 3: you to them, and thank you to everybody who has
- 37:44Speaker 3: got behind it, is donated, has shared it, and you
- 37:47Speaker 3: know that's why I do it. I'm not here for me,
- 37:50Speaker 3: I'm here for everything. And thank you to the Trust
- 37:52Speaker 3: for just believing that I could do it, because I
- 37:55Speaker 3: didn't think I could at many points.
- 37:57Speaker 5: So thank you to them for being behind me for
- 37:59Speaker 5: the whole thing.
- 38:00Speaker 2: And have you got a just giving page?
- 38:01Speaker 5: I have.
- 38:02Speaker 3: Yeah, so it's a legacy ten and it's Facistic Fibrosis Trust.
- 38:07Speaker 5: So you can find it on there under my name.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Okay, and now I see you set yourself a nice
- 38:13Speaker 1: round figure. I suppose it goes in with the tens
- 38:16Speaker 1: ten thousand pound.
- 38:17Speaker 2: How's it going?
- 38:18Speaker 5: Yeah, it's going well.
- 38:19Speaker 3: It's starting to ramp up now we're getting to the
- 38:22Speaker 3: second half and I've got a few things going out
- 38:26Speaker 3: in the press in the next week or two that
- 38:28Speaker 3: will be great.
- 38:29Speaker 5: To give it a boost.
- 38:30Speaker 3: But yeah, so the ten thousand pound it it fitted
- 38:33Speaker 3: quite right for the ten marathons.
- 38:35Speaker 5: Really, I didn't really think another number would work.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Yeah, one.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, okay, be I mean, is there anything else
- 38:44Speaker 1: you want to say before we go?
- 38:45Speaker 3: No, no, just thank you, thank you for taking a
- 38:48Speaker 3: time to speak to me. And yeah, if anyone else
- 38:51Speaker 3: ever wants to run a marathon, do it.
- 38:53Speaker 5: It's one of the best things you'll ever do.
- 38:54Speaker 1: I say to run ers, if you're going to run
- 38:56Speaker 1: a marathon, run London, because my very first marathon was
- 38:59Speaker 1: up in your and it was so isolated and I
- 39:02Speaker 1: felt so lonely. I could at one point I couldn't
- 39:04Speaker 1: see anybody in front of me, anybody behind me. I've
- 39:08Speaker 1: no signs, but I hadn't gone wrong, but it was
- 39:10Speaker 1: just lonely, Whereas in London, twenty six point two miles
- 39:14Speaker 1: of the route is just cover with people.
- 39:15Speaker 3: It is, and if you're not running and you're about
- 39:18Speaker 3: on the twenty seventh, go and watch it. You'll leave
- 39:20Speaker 3: their feeling an the happiest person in the world. Okay, Bet,
- 39:24Speaker 3: thanks for turning your story. I mean, what can I say?
- 39:26Speaker 1: You set yourself an awesome challenge, and I hope people
- 39:30Speaker 1: are listening and perhaps understand a bit more about assistic
- 39:32Speaker 1: fibrosis and more perhaps some of them might even take
- 39:35Speaker 1: up doing a park round or something like that. It
- 39:37Speaker 1: obviously works for you, So find a word from you, Beth.
- 39:41Speaker 3: Get moving, get your legs moving, even a walk, it's
- 39:44Speaker 3: good for you. And yeah, if you want to set
- 39:47Speaker 3: yourself a goal, maybe not ten, get yourself and do
- 39:49Speaker 3: a marathon.
- 39:50Speaker 2: It's fantastic. Okay, thanks Beth, and good luck on the
- 39:52Speaker 2: date and we'll be looking at for you. Well what
- 39:55Speaker 2: a story that was.
- 39:56Speaker 1: A ten marathons over such a short period. I mean,
- 39:59Speaker 1: with half a normal lung capacity. What an inspiration for
- 40:03Speaker 1: anybody to try at least, you know, do a couch
- 40:06Speaker 1: to five k Okay, time for a bit of music now,
- 40:08Speaker 1: and this one is for Beth. This is just the
- 40:11Speaker 1: absolute I had to play this and this is the
- 40:13Speaker 1: theme from the London Marathon. Well I'm just going to
- 40:28Speaker 1: fade that down for a little bit because we have
- 40:30Speaker 1: got so much more sport to get through. But that
- 40:32Speaker 1: was especially for Beth, ten marathons. Like I say, what
- 40:37Speaker 1: an inspiration, And it might be a beneficial you know,
- 40:42Speaker 1: for cystic fibrosis sufferers to just do a bit of
- 40:46Speaker 1: exercise and perhaps it will help clear the stuff in
- 40:50Speaker 1: their body and just make for a better life. Okay,
- 40:54Speaker 1: So I'm going to do a little bit of football,
- 40:56Speaker 1: and only a little bit, but I must say, and
- 40:58Speaker 1: I did promise the team that I would say this.
- 41:01Speaker 1: Congratulations go to the folks in the Victor women's team
- 41:05Speaker 1: on winning the league in their first season. After a
- 41:07Speaker 1: two to one away victory at Merzam this Sunday they
- 41:11Speaker 1: are a way to Lockfield Ladies in the Kent Divisional
- 41:13Speaker 1: quarterfinal and can they do the double? Wouldn't that be
- 41:17Speaker 1: good in the first season. Perhaps there's asking too much,
- 41:20Speaker 1: but I don see why not. They're playing very very well.
- 41:24Speaker 1: If you go to folcusing in Victor website focusing in
- 41:27Speaker 1: Victor Football Team website, you will see a little clip
- 41:30Speaker 1: of their game from last Sunday, so the double could
- 41:34Speaker 1: be on the cards. So well done to everybody involved, management,
- 41:38Speaker 1: players and supporters in their first season.
- 41:40Speaker 2: And there'd be more.
- 41:41Speaker 1: Football on adi's Saturday show where hopefully this week but
- 41:46Speaker 1: Ad will be interviewing. Oh Josh, hey you the focusing
- 41:50Speaker 1: in Victor chairman. That's the one, so tuning in for that. Okay,
- 41:54Speaker 1: So another sport we haven't covered it. It's only just
- 41:56Speaker 1: started a netball I want to get this one in
- 41:58Speaker 1: as well. It looks like it's the netball summer season
- 42:03Speaker 1: and of the first set of results. So let me
- 42:05Speaker 1: remind you of how it goes after the team's names.
- 42:08Speaker 1: As you'll quote a player's name, this player was the
- 42:11Speaker 1: outstanding member of that team. So here we go. You
- 42:14Speaker 1: all soon get the hang of it. These games were
- 42:15Speaker 1: played on the eighteenth of March sting Ray's twelve, Mayer
- 42:20Speaker 1: Viper's sixty four, erin Rough, Diamonds fifteen, Sarah Jets sixty three, Millie,
- 42:29Speaker 1: now listen to this one, Tiger's thirty nine, Lola Merston
- 42:34Speaker 1: thirty nine, Letitia, what game that must have been? Thirty
- 42:37Speaker 1: nine or we've never known that before? And finally Panthers
- 42:40Speaker 1: forty seven Katie and Scorpions twenty seven imaging. Now on Saturday,
- 42:47Speaker 1: the nineteenth of April, that's Easter Saturday, there's a super
- 42:50Speaker 1: short and mixed netball tournament. This is where I need
- 42:53Speaker 1: to get somebody in to tell me the rules, you know.
- 42:57Speaker 1: But I think super short is where the player is
- 42:59Speaker 1: actually they throw the ball from a certain distance. I
- 43:02Speaker 1: think it's a bit further than the normal standard area
- 43:06Speaker 1: that they're allowed to throw the ball. So I just
- 43:09Speaker 1: need to get somebody from the netball team in and
- 43:11Speaker 1: tell me all about it. And also this is a
- 43:15Speaker 1: new one on me a mixed tournament which means three
- 43:18Speaker 1: men are allowed in the team of seven and can
- 43:21Speaker 1: only play in certain positions and they are goalkeeper, goal shooter,
- 43:25Speaker 1: and center, which will all add to the fun. Registration
- 43:28Speaker 1: is between nine and nine point thirty and the games
- 43:31Speaker 1: I played at the Three Hills starting at ten o'clock
- 43:33Speaker 1: and going on till approximately three o'clock depends how they go.
- 43:37Speaker 1: For all the information, please go to the Facebook page
- 43:39Speaker 1: of the Folks and Netball League. Now, if you're a
- 43:42Speaker 1: floater that's an individual who likes a game but can't
- 43:45Speaker 1: commit to a team, please contact the league and if
- 43:48Speaker 1: teams are short, they've got a list then and they
- 43:52Speaker 1: can slot you in. And one more thing, the leagues
- 43:55Speaker 1: are always looking for umpires and players. They do have
- 43:58Speaker 1: a league in Dover as well, and they're always on
- 44:01Speaker 1: looking out for floaters for their games. On a Monday evening, well,
- 44:05Speaker 1: I am rapidly running out of time. Some of this
- 44:07Speaker 1: sport news I will pass over to ad and and
- 44:12Speaker 1: he will have read it out on Saturday. I won't
- 44:15Speaker 1: be there Saturday I'll be at the park run of
- 44:18Speaker 1: Amy and Henry. They're going to have a little fun
- 44:22Speaker 1: park run and they we're looking forward to that. So
- 44:26Speaker 1: what more can I say except that if you are
- 44:28Speaker 1: going to the Rhino Run, I'll see you there on
- 44:32Speaker 1: one oh five point nine, online at Radio Folkston dot com,
- 44:37Speaker 1: and on your smart speaker.
