- 0:09Speaker 1: Our friend field Yates always finds time for us, even
- 0:13Speaker 1: during the busiest time on his calendar. It is draft week,
- 0:17Speaker 1: my friend. Look at that smile. It's a smile of
- 0:20Speaker 1: I can't wait for the draft and also I am
- 0:22Speaker 1: fucking tired of talking about the draft.
- 0:24Speaker 2: It's funny. I've had the debate. I actually was talking
- 0:27Speaker 2: to Kuiper last night, and as we're debating whether we're
- 0:30Speaker 2: more excited for the draft to be here, I'm more
- 0:33Speaker 2: excited for the draft to be over. And we both
- 0:35Speaker 2: agreed probably for the draft to be over. You know,
- 0:40Speaker 2: Belle lives in the land of pleasant living down there,
- 0:42Speaker 2: and you know, the shores of Maryland. So for him,
- 0:46Speaker 2: assuming mother Nature cooperates, a summer of time on the
- 0:49Speaker 2: boat and all the other great amenities the Kuiper compound
- 0:52Speaker 2: has available, is just around the corner. I live in Connecticut,
- 0:56Speaker 2: where it's currently forty six degrees, so it's formed up.
- 1:00Speaker 2: So we're probably another month away from pleasant living like
- 1:04Speaker 2: mel gets to experience very soon. But I'm ready for
- 1:06Speaker 2: the draft to be over.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Fieldy, you spent months writing all this stuff up, preparing
- 1:13Speaker 3: all this mock drafts.
- 1:14Speaker 4: This guy's right up. This guy's right up.
- 1:16Speaker 3: And then Thursday, Friday, Saturday, come do you just take
- 1:19Speaker 3: all those papers and just throw them out like what happens?
- 1:22Speaker 4: Then?
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it is a very cleansing feeling.
- 1:25Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:26Speaker 2: The interesting part about the draft is that the past
- 1:29Speaker 2: few year ago, call it two weeks, probably maybe a
- 1:31Speaker 2: little longer than that, has not really been a bunch
- 1:34Speaker 2: of preparation. Like I haven't been pouring over tape on
- 1:37Speaker 2: guys for the past two weeks like I was previously.
- 1:40Speaker 2: It's more just like getting a scan on guys that
- 1:43Speaker 2: you haven't watched a little while, or some of the
- 1:45Speaker 2: Day three guys that are just lesser known prospects that
- 1:48Speaker 2: you haven't put as much energy into because you're probably
- 1:52Speaker 2: only going to be talking about them during the draft broadcast.
- 1:55Speaker 2: The Sports center is not asking me for my favorite,
- 1:57Speaker 2: you know, sixth round linebacker from a non power conference school, right.
- 2:04Speaker 2: But these past couple of weeks has been a lot
- 2:05Speaker 2: of like you know, gathering information around the NFL from
- 2:09Speaker 2: people and their opinions on where things are with guys.
- 2:12Speaker 2: So it feels like what I spent a lot of
- 2:13Speaker 2: my energy doing leading up to the draft is speculating
- 2:18Speaker 2: with people. But I realized that My favorite and I
- 2:20Speaker 2: think we touched on this a bit the last time
- 2:22Speaker 2: I was on the show is the best part of
- 2:24Speaker 2: the draft is the idea that we have no idea
- 2:27Speaker 2: what's going to happen, and getting to enjoy how it
- 2:30Speaker 2: all plays out. We know from Nanda Mendoza is going
- 2:32Speaker 2: number one, and we have some leans on picks thereafter,
- 2:35Speaker 2: but it just takes one domino to create amazing ripple effects.
- 2:39Speaker 2: So that, to me is what I'm looking most forward
- 2:42Speaker 2: to over the three days coming up this weekend.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Check out the podcast First Draft with Field, mel Kiper Junior,
- 2:48Speaker 1: and Mike Greenberg. It's fantastic. Have you been to the
- 2:51Speaker 1: Kuiper Compound?
- 2:52Speaker 2: Never been, but we were talking about making a trip
- 2:54Speaker 2: down there. When I say me, basically, I mean not
- 2:58Speaker 2: my entire family, but maybe me one of my kids.
- 3:00Speaker 2: One of my kids were discussing it. I don't know
- 3:02Speaker 2: if I can bring all of them, but there's negotiations
- 3:04Speaker 2: going on right now. Mel says it's amazing, and I
- 3:07Speaker 2: hear nothing to dissuade me from that bought.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Well, I think what he finds amazing about it is
- 3:12Speaker 1: no one ever gets to go to it. He doesn't
- 3:13Speaker 1: want anyone there. And so are you having these conversations
- 3:16Speaker 1: with Mel or just with family members.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, yeah, this is mostly just a Mel.
- 3:21Speaker 2: But you're right, like Mel will offer me until the
- 3:25Speaker 2: end of time the opportunity to come down to his home,
- 3:28Speaker 2: which is not near anything other than his own home. Meanwhile,
- 3:32Speaker 2: ESPN is not far from where I live. It does
- 3:35Speaker 2: not matter how much time Mel spends up at ESPN.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I'm not sure he's ever gonna make it in my
- 3:40Speaker 2: house right because he wants to go to work, he
- 3:42Speaker 2: wants to go back to the hotel, and wants to
- 3:44Speaker 2: wake up the next day and get in an airplane
- 3:46Speaker 2: or get in a car.
- 3:47Speaker 4: And drive home.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Well, it's interesting because you have the open invite. It
- 3:50Speaker 1: seems like I was in Maryland that was right by
- 3:52Speaker 1: Mel's house. I told him I was coming over for
- 3:54Speaker 1: the day and he said he's leaving, so I may
- 3:56Speaker 1: come on.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Come on their game this weekend. What do we have
- 3:59Speaker 2: going on in Maryland?
- 4:00Speaker 1: They were playing Maryland's on the road last week. They
- 4:04Speaker 1: beat them number one on the road. They beat UNC
- 4:06Speaker 1: number one on the road. They just beat Michigan. I'm
- 4:09Speaker 1: telling you they are peaking at the right time. You
- 4:11Speaker 1: know what I'm saying?
- 4:11Speaker 4: Field?
- 4:12Speaker 2: How about that?
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 4:15Speaker 4: Look at that he.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Has more rings than the Rants. I mean, what can
- 4:17Speaker 1: I tell you?
- 4:21Speaker 2: Oh Man, I love talk with yes.
- 4:24Speaker 1: All right, So let's get into this draft here, because
- 4:27Speaker 1: there are some fascinating parts of it, even though not
- 4:30Speaker 1: a ton of big names. Let's start with the trade
- 4:32Speaker 1: that the Bengals made with the Giants before we get
- 4:35Speaker 1: to the actual Who's going? Where were you surprised? How
- 4:38Speaker 1: surprised were you that the Bengals, who never do this
- 4:41Speaker 1: sort of thing, they haven't traded a top ten pig
- 4:43Speaker 1: since like nineteen sixty six, I think was the was
- 4:47Speaker 1: the year I read yesterday. How surprised were you that
- 4:49Speaker 1: the Bengals made this trade?
- 4:51Speaker 2: Extremely surprised given the cost. So I thought, when the Bengals,
- 4:56Speaker 2: I'm sorry, when the Giants put Dexter Lawrence sort of
- 4:59Speaker 2: on the block, not officially, but when they acknowledge contract
- 5:02Speaker 2: negotiations for a problem and he expressed his discontent, I thought, hey,
- 5:07Speaker 2: maybe some team will give him a second round pick.
- 5:10Speaker 2: But I did not think they would get a top
- 5:13Speaker 2: ten pick. I thought maybe a team towards the end
- 5:16Speaker 2: of the first round, if Buffalo had all the financial
- 5:20Speaker 2: flexibility you need to acquire a player like Dexter Lawrence.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Maybe Buffalo would take on Dexter Lawrence for the cost
- 5:28Speaker 2: of a low first round pick and they would say
- 5:30Speaker 2: this is our icing on the cake.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Right.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Think about some of the notable plays that have cost
- 5:35Speaker 2: Buffalo in the postseason in recent years, game of inches
- 5:39Speaker 2: for them. Cincinnati has the tenth pick in the draft,
- 5:42Speaker 2: which again at Joe Burrow missed a lot of time
- 5:44Speaker 2: last year. I didn't think this team was just Dexter
- 5:47Speaker 2: Lawrence away from competing. I also think that, well, this
- 5:52Speaker 2: draft is not good, and I acknowledged that the tenth
- 5:55Speaker 2: overall pick in this draft compared to tenth overall pick
- 5:58Speaker 2: in prior drafts not as there's still the chance the
- 6:02Speaker 2: idea of the concept that you have the tenth pick
- 6:05Speaker 2: that immediately comes with five years of contract control and
- 6:09Speaker 2: a fraction of the costs. As a matter of fact,
- 6:11Speaker 2: I'm just going to look up quickly. JJ McCarthy was
- 6:13Speaker 2: the tenth pick in the draft two years ago, so
- 6:16Speaker 2: it'll be a slight inflation. But JJ signed for four
- 6:20Speaker 2: years and call it twenty two million bucks that fifth
- 6:22Speaker 2: year team option. So and so this year's first tenth
- 6:27Speaker 2: overall pick will be something like four years and probably
- 6:29Speaker 2: twenty three and a half million bucks. That's less than
- 6:33Speaker 2: six million dollars per year for a guy that's younger,
- 6:37Speaker 2: and I don't know that'll be better than Dexter Lawrence.
- 6:40Speaker 2: He may get there in time, it probably won't be
- 6:42Speaker 2: out of the gates. I just am surprised by the
- 6:44Speaker 2: heavy handedness by Cincinnati. I think it's a great deal,
- 6:48Speaker 2: obviously for the Giants. This is a player who was
- 6:51Speaker 2: not happy. This is a team that needs a lot
- 6:53Speaker 2: of work, and they now have two top ten picks.
- 6:56Speaker 2: They don't control the draft, but they're about any as
- 6:59Speaker 2: influential as any team in the top ten. Now, given
- 7:02Speaker 2: that nobody else can boast those two top ten picks.
- 7:05Speaker 1: What do you expect them to do with those picks?
- 7:08Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, there's been a lot of buzz about
- 7:11Speaker 2: them being a wide receiver team. I do think this though,
- 7:14Speaker 2: and I could see that I'm not dismissing that possibility
- 7:16Speaker 2: at all. Jordan Tyson being the name you've heard connected
- 7:18Speaker 2: to the Giants right the most, the two top ten
- 7:22Speaker 2: picks to me allow this Giants team to do like
- 7:27Speaker 2: it's the John Harbaugh show, right, Like Josh is still
- 7:29Speaker 2: a part of this, but John Harbaugh, if I guess,
- 7:32Speaker 2: and if we're breaking ties here, it's probably going to
- 7:34Speaker 2: be what John Harbaugh wants. And I think that John
- 7:37Speaker 2: harbad now has the opportunity to build this thing, which
- 7:40Speaker 2: I think is the way that he wants to do,
- 7:41Speaker 2: which is how the Ravens have operated and how a
- 7:44Speaker 2: lot of successful teams have operated. Which is best player available, right,
- 7:48Speaker 2: we are not going to be totally beholden to needs.
- 7:52Speaker 2: We're going to be taking players that we think belong
- 7:55Speaker 2: in the top five ish, in the top ten ish
- 7:57Speaker 2: at five and ten overall. So pretty much any Ohio
- 8:01Speaker 2: States defensive player would make some sense for the Giants.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Tony Styles, R L Reese, Caleb Downs, they'd make a
- 8:08Speaker 2: difference for this roster. The offensive line to me, screams
- 8:12Speaker 2: potential number ten pick. This is a team that they
- 8:16Speaker 2: can be fine lining up for a game tomorrow, but
- 8:19Speaker 2: twenty twenty seven is a problem. Deep a depth is
- 8:22Speaker 2: an issue now and starting level players is an issue
- 8:26Speaker 2: for next year, if not sooner. So five to me
- 8:29Speaker 2: feels like defense tend to be feels like interior offensive
- 8:32Speaker 2: line for the Giants. But I just think this was
- 8:35Speaker 2: a great trade, Like, I feel much better about their
- 8:37Speaker 2: outlook now compared to where they were just four or
- 8:41Speaker 2: five days ago prior to this trade.
- 8:42Speaker 5: Yes Field, do you mentioned wide receivers? How do NFL
- 8:45Speaker 5: teams view Carnel Tate who benefited at Ohio State playing
- 8:49Speaker 5: opposite somebody like Jeremiah Smith, But now when an NFL
- 8:52Speaker 5: team drafts him that high, you're kind of expecting him
- 8:55Speaker 5: to be a wide receiver.
- 8:56Speaker 4: One.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say this is some of the things
- 9:00Speaker 2: about the evaluation with Carnel Tate, or not Carnal's fault
- 9:03Speaker 2: at all. It's more like circumstance driven. But the truth
- 9:06Speaker 2: of the matter is that up to this point, Carneal
- 9:09Speaker 2: Tate not up to this point, I guess high school
- 9:11Speaker 2: probably was an exception, but during his college career he
- 9:14Speaker 2: was really never asked to be the number one guy
- 9:17Speaker 2: or close to it, right, I mean, two years ago
- 9:19Speaker 2: there was both a Mecca Abuca and of course Jeremiah Smith.
- 9:24Speaker 2: This past year there was Jeremiah Smith. Cardinaltate was never
- 9:27Speaker 2: asked to be just like the guy by himself. So
- 9:30Speaker 2: does that mean he's incapable of doing it or is
- 9:33Speaker 2: it perhaps the circumstances. I think it's largely the circumstances.
- 9:37Speaker 2: But I think teams feel as though there is a
- 9:38Speaker 2: ceiling on him compared to Jordan Tyson, which is why
- 9:41Speaker 2: if you're more a Jordan Tyson fan than a Carneal
- 9:44Speaker 2: Tate fan. There's a body of evidence that Jordan Tyson
- 9:47Speaker 2: can be the go to wide receiver for an offense. Now,
- 9:50Speaker 2: is it the same playing in Arizona State as it
- 9:53Speaker 2: is at Ohio State. No, Like Jordan Tyson didn't have
- 9:55Speaker 2: nearly the the guardrails that he had to overcome that
- 10:00Speaker 2: Carnell Date did right, the other wide receivers at Arizona
- 10:03Speaker 2: State are probably not going to get drafted, but you
- 10:06Speaker 2: do have a sample size of when a team needed
- 10:08Speaker 2: him to be their wide receiver. One and not a
- 10:11Speaker 2: nothing team. Arizona State with double overtime with Texas last year,
- 10:15Speaker 2: nearly beat them, and they were a dominant team last
- 10:18Speaker 2: year was Arizona State. Jordan Tyson was an unbelievable player, sorry,
- 10:24Speaker 2: unbelievable player prior to getting hurt, which came before the
- 10:27Speaker 2: playoff run, but he was absolutely absurd. I always talk
- 10:31Speaker 2: about those last six games prior to the playoffs, or
- 10:34Speaker 2: Jordan Tyson fifty catches, six receiving touchdowns. I think it
- 10:37Speaker 2: was seven hundred and twenty two yards. He was awesome.
- 10:40Speaker 2: So that's why I think that Carnel Tate Jordan Tyson
- 10:43Speaker 2: conversation has become more interesting over the past week or
- 10:46Speaker 2: so as teams have felt more comfortable with where Jordan Tyson's.
- 10:49Speaker 4: At metically field.
- 10:52Speaker 3: It's fascinating to me on draft Day the amount of
- 10:55Speaker 3: trades we have, and we've heard differing opinions.
- 10:59Speaker 4: This year as to what we're going to see. Are
- 11:01Speaker 4: teams moving up and teams moving back? What do you
- 11:04Speaker 4: expect to see come round one on Thursday.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Yeah, So I think that the trades that we anticipates
- 11:12Speaker 2: prior to the draft are the sizeable ones up or
- 11:15Speaker 2: the sizable and of course the other side of it's
- 11:17Speaker 2: the sizeable ones down right, Couse, the Cowboys move up
- 11:19Speaker 2: from twelve to three, or twelve to six, or twelve
- 11:22Speaker 2: to five, whatever it might be. I'm not ruling those out.
- 11:26Speaker 2: I haven't heard anything on those fronts that are like
- 11:29Speaker 2: telling me this is going to get done by the
- 11:31Speaker 2: time people listen to this show and watch this show.
- 11:35Speaker 2: But I do think this draft given the subjectivity of
- 11:38Speaker 2: the prospects in this year's class, and there's always this
- 11:40Speaker 2: subjective nature to scouting, but this year things are all
- 11:43Speaker 2: over the place, Like I think there's going to be
- 11:44Speaker 2: a lot of picks where teams go they took who
- 11:47Speaker 2: how high? As a result of that, what in surprise
- 11:50Speaker 2: me if you see a lot more sort of tinkering
- 11:52Speaker 2: around the board. You're sitting there at fifteen and you're surprised,
- 11:56Speaker 2: I'm just picking this up. The Bucks are sitting there
- 11:58Speaker 2: at fifteen and a guy is available at twelve and
- 12:01Speaker 2: they're like, how on earth did this player make it
- 12:04Speaker 2: to twelve? Let's move on up? And that I did
- 12:09Speaker 2: not explain this as eloquently as the great Adam Schefter did,
- 12:12Speaker 2: But Schefty and I were talking about how draft picks
- 12:15Speaker 2: this year might be like a little bit on sale
- 12:17Speaker 2: compared to prior years. Well, it's not a great draft class.
- 12:21Speaker 2: You can't drive as hard of a bargain, especially when
- 12:23Speaker 2: there's not a quarterback involved in the presumptive trade up.
- 12:27Speaker 2: So I think there's a chance that we see a
- 12:29Speaker 2: lot of maneuvering around the board. I think there's a
- 12:32Speaker 2: chance that there's also a lot more of the maneuvering type.
- 12:35Speaker 2: That is, like I'm coming up from eighteen to sixteen,
- 12:38Speaker 2: I'm coming up from twenty six to twenty two, and
- 12:40Speaker 2: you know, just smaller moves as opposed to these big
- 12:43Speaker 2: sort of landscape altering trades that we talk about for
- 12:47Speaker 2: years after that draft.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Right, But it depends on whether or not a team
- 12:52Speaker 1: who's picking let's say high teens twenties, if they really
- 12:55Speaker 1: like a guy, then maybe there's a lot of movement,
- 12:56Speaker 1: right that creates the market.
- 12:58Speaker 2: That's the fun part is that if we get a
- 13:00Speaker 2: lot of beauty in the eye of the beholder dynamics,
- 13:02Speaker 2: then we should see some action. On Thursday night. Someone
- 13:06Speaker 2: asked me recently. I was on a show with ESPN
- 13:09Speaker 2: Radio earlier today and they asked me sort of, what's
- 13:11Speaker 2: the biggest in this copycat league, Like, what's the trend
- 13:14Speaker 2: you've noticed for this year. I didn't have an answer
- 13:17Speaker 2: for this year specifically, but I did note that, you know,
- 13:20Speaker 2: we have a generally more aggressive group of gms right
- 13:24Speaker 2: now in the NFL. It's become younger. I don't know
- 13:28Speaker 2: those things are necessarily tied together, but it's this younger
- 13:31Speaker 2: or sharper often more analytically inclined group, and guys are
- 13:35Speaker 2: unafraid to make bold moves because I think what some
- 13:39Speaker 2: of these gms have realized is that even when you
- 13:42Speaker 2: lose on a bold move, you can still overcome that
- 13:44Speaker 2: and be okay. The Rams went all in, and they
- 13:48Speaker 2: had one bad year and they were right back up
- 13:50Speaker 2: and they've been a legit Super Bowl contender since then.
- 13:54Speaker 2: The Jaguars won thirteen games last year when their biggest
- 13:57Speaker 2: move of the offseason was trading for Travis Hunter, and
- 13:59Speaker 2: he played I would say, a pretty nominal role for
- 14:02Speaker 2: that franchise, not a nothing role, but it wasn't like
- 14:05Speaker 2: he was the player that we were hoping for right
- 14:07Speaker 2: out of the shoots. So I think that we'll see
- 14:09Speaker 2: we are seeing more aggressive gms and that in turn
- 14:13Speaker 2: has resulted in more activity, which I think as consumers, fans,
- 14:17Speaker 2: people that are covering the draft, I think we can
- 14:20Speaker 2: all agree it's good for business. Fans love the thrill
- 14:23Speaker 2: of a potential.

- 16:26Speaker 1: Chefter reported that the AJ Brown deal is all but
- 16:29Speaker 1: done after June first. So first off, let me ask
- 16:32Speaker 1: you this, what do you think the Eagles get in
- 16:34Speaker 1: exchange for a J Brown from the Patriots?
- 16:37Speaker 2: Yeah, And people should just know that whoever the Patriots
- 16:42Speaker 2: take it thirty one, their current first round pick is
- 16:45Speaker 2: not Howie Roseman telling Mike Rabele take this guy, and
- 16:49Speaker 2: we'll acquire this player after the fact. You know, in
- 16:51Speaker 2: the NBA you sometimes see guys get traded after they've
- 16:55Speaker 2: been taken. Here I go, my NBA talking. So let's
- 16:59Speaker 2: get it it won't be one of these. It's twenty
- 17:01Speaker 2: twenty seven or twenty twenty eight draft capital. And I
- 17:06Speaker 2: think that one of the notable parts here is oftentimes
- 17:08Speaker 2: when you have a great player available via trade, you say, like,
- 17:11Speaker 2: if you're going to trade that player, you're going to
- 17:12Speaker 2: do it prior to the draft, because great players often
- 17:15Speaker 2: are on great teams, great team and it's it's you know,
- 17:18Speaker 2: it's more logical for a bad team. It's Raad a
- 17:20Speaker 2: great player with Giants, with Dexter Lawrence, Hey, they're not
- 17:23Speaker 2: that close to winning. You should move on from or
- 17:25Speaker 2: you can move on from those guys more easily. For
- 17:27Speaker 2: the Eagles a Super Bowl contender and move on from
- 17:29Speaker 2: aj Brown. How do you do that well without getting
- 17:34Speaker 2: something in return for this year. It's reflective of the
- 17:37Speaker 2: fact that and things can, of course change. The NFL
- 17:41Speaker 2: believes twenty twenty seven especially, but maybe twenty twenty eight
- 17:45Speaker 2: as well, are going to be excellent draft classes. Twenty
- 17:48Speaker 2: twenty seven, I mean, just right out of the gates,
- 17:50Speaker 2: we're talking about not just the quarterbacks, but Jeremia Smith
- 17:54Speaker 2: from Ohio State. We already talked about him, Colin Simmons,
- 17:56Speaker 2: pass rusher from Texas. Those are just like two of
- 17:59Speaker 2: the many names that we'll be talking about next year.
- 18:02Speaker 2: That could be we could be talking about them as
- 18:04Speaker 2: blue chippers. Like in this year's class, we're talking about
- 18:07Speaker 2: like two or three blue chippers. Maybe we could be
- 18:10Speaker 2: talking about ten or twelve. This could be like twenty
- 18:12Speaker 2: twenty four all over again, which was this awesome, awesome
- 18:15Speaker 2: draft case draft class. So I think that the Eagles, like,
- 18:18Speaker 2: could they get a twenty twenty seven to one? Maybe?
- 18:22Speaker 2: Could it be a twenty twenty seven two plus a four?
- 18:26Speaker 2: Could it be a conditional twenty twenty seven to one
- 18:29Speaker 2: where it's a two unless the Patriots make the AFC
- 18:33Speaker 2: Championship Game again and then it becomes a one. Like,
- 18:36Speaker 2: I think there are ways to wiggle that pick around
- 18:39Speaker 2: a little bit that both give Philadelphia the upside to
- 18:42Speaker 2: make it worth it, but protect the Patriots at a
- 18:45Speaker 2: little bit. Because this draft class next year does look
- 18:47Speaker 2: really really good.
- 18:48Speaker 4: Classic Cowie focused on next year's draft. I love them, Yes, guy, Mike.
- 18:53Speaker 3: H Mendoza and love Who are the other blue chip
- 18:56Speaker 3: players in this trip in this class?
- 18:58Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 18:59Speaker 2: Good question is who are they? I say it's sort
- 19:01Speaker 2: of two or three. I think Sonny Styles in Caleb
- 19:05Speaker 2: Downs are blue chip players at non blue chip positions.
- 19:08Speaker 2: So like David Bailey and rbl Reese are close to
- 19:12Speaker 2: blue chip players, but they play a premium position, and
- 19:16Speaker 2: that to me puts them close to the to the
- 19:18Speaker 2: to the to the sort of blue chip category. Caleb
- 19:22Speaker 2: Downs to Tony Styles, I think fall closer to that category.
- 19:25Speaker 2: It's just a matter of And I know fans don't
- 19:28Speaker 2: love like economics, but just we if we acknowledge that
- 19:33Speaker 2: quarterbacks make the most money and then pass rushers, right,
- 19:36Speaker 2: Will Anderson now makes fifty million dollars.
- 19:39Speaker 4: A easy yes.
- 19:40Speaker 2: So if you have the chance to sign a guy,
- 19:42Speaker 2: it's a drafted guy who the best case scenario for
- 19:45Speaker 2: him is making fifty million dollars per year, and the
- 19:47Speaker 2: best case scenario for an off ball linebacker is something
- 19:50Speaker 2: like twenty two million dollars a year. That matters, right
- 19:55Speaker 2: like it matters because the NFL has told us that
- 19:58Speaker 2: it doesn't influence winning. Off ball linebacker does not as
- 20:02Speaker 2: much as a pass rusher. So I think I would
- 20:05Speaker 2: lean towards two blue chip players with two guys that
- 20:10Speaker 2: are like inches away from that category as well. So
- 20:14Speaker 2: Fernanda Mendoza, Jeremiah Love, Caleb Downs, Sonny Styles with Downs
- 20:20Speaker 2: and styles in like a maybe with like an asterisk
- 20:22Speaker 2: next to them just because of the position they play field.
- 20:25Speaker 5: Did you look at some of the impact players from
- 20:27Speaker 5: last year's draft, You can make the argument nobody was
- 20:30Speaker 5: more impactful to their team than the Seahawks picking nick
- 20:33Speaker 5: O man Worri thirty fifth. Who is the player there
- 20:37Speaker 5: where a team is going to get him, you know,
- 20:39Speaker 5: twenty on. But if he goes to the right team,
- 20:42Speaker 5: the right contender, he can make a great team a
- 20:45Speaker 5: super Bowl favorite.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Yeah, So I think we got to go down to
- 20:48Speaker 2: the teams that are picking like near that range, right,
- 20:51Speaker 2: Like it's hard for me to say that I'm just
- 20:54Speaker 2: making this up here, but like the Browns at six
- 20:57Speaker 2: are going to get a guy that all of a
- 20:58Speaker 2: sudden puts them into tender categories because they got a
- 21:02Speaker 2: lot of question marks there. But as we go further
- 21:04Speaker 2: and further down and we go to teams like an
- 21:07Speaker 2: example of a guy that I think there's a number
- 21:11Speaker 2: of pass rushers that could go from call it twenty
- 21:14Speaker 2: to thirty two. In my final mocked draft, you're gonna
- 21:17Speaker 2: see names like Keldrick falk A, Key mesidor r Mason Thomas,
- 21:21Speaker 2: maybe Malachi Lawrence from UCF that I think those kind
- 21:26Speaker 2: of guys can make a real impact there. I'll throw
- 21:28Speaker 2: one more at Am and he's a guy that might
- 21:30Speaker 2: not even go in the first round, but the best
- 21:32Speaker 2: version of this player could unlock some things for a
- 21:35Speaker 2: defense would be Peter Woods from Clemson. I kind of
- 21:38Speaker 2: toy with him back into the first early part of
- 21:42Speaker 2: the second. There's some people who think he could go
- 21:44Speaker 2: earlier than that. I tell people one of my rules
- 21:47Speaker 2: for the draft is water often finds its level right.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Guys that are really good players don't really ride the
- 21:53Speaker 2: wave pre draft. They just they just kind of go
- 21:56Speaker 2: where they're supposed to go all the time. Peter Woods
- 21:59Speaker 2: might test that theory a little bit because he came
- 22:01Speaker 2: into the season with top five aspirations. I think he
- 22:05Speaker 2: left the season still feeling like he was going to
- 22:07Speaker 2: be taken in the top ten. I would be very
- 22:09Speaker 2: surprised if you went top ten. I think the Dexter
- 22:11Speaker 2: Lawrence trade informed us of how the league feels, or
- 22:14Speaker 2: at least how the Bengals feel about the defensive tackle class,
- 22:17Speaker 2: especially relative to the tenth overall pick in the draft.
- 22:20Speaker 2: But I think Peter Wood's in the right spot. If
- 22:22Speaker 2: he goes somewhere reason have to be the man, but
- 22:24Speaker 2: can be a guy within that defense, has a chance
- 22:26Speaker 2: to be a really disruptive player.
- 22:28Speaker 1: If Ruben Bain's arms were a half inch long runt,
- 22:31Speaker 1: how high would he go in this draft?
- 22:34Speaker 4: I think he goes.
- 22:34Speaker 2: I think the range is still somewhere in the first
- 22:36Speaker 2: twelve to fourteen picks. I think if his arms were
- 22:40Speaker 2: a little longer, though, and we had some athletic measurements
- 22:44Speaker 2: with him, we might be talking about him in like
- 22:46Speaker 2: that four to six range. It's hard, though, it's when
- 22:51Speaker 2: you don't have the premiere length and there's no athletic
- 22:54Speaker 2: testing in scouts believe this is more sort of good
- 22:58Speaker 2: athlete as opposed to excellent athletes. Scouting can be boring
- 23:01Speaker 2: with the vocabulary. Sometimes you a lot of teams when
- 23:04Speaker 2: when when you are describing players, it's either done numerically
- 23:07Speaker 2: right or it's just like rare, excellent good, very good,
- 23:13Speaker 2: good average. And the reason why they use the same
- 23:16Speaker 2: terms over and over and over again is to establish consistency. Right,
- 23:20Speaker 2: If if I said that Stugatts has has amazing speed,
- 23:25Speaker 2: and Tailor's got incredible speed, and Mikey's got exceptional speed.
- 23:30Speaker 4: El Tailor. Yeah, but like who would be.
- 23:35Speaker 2: The fastest of those players?
- 23:36Speaker 4: Right?
- 23:37Speaker 2: Of those guys, you would have all those those those
- 23:39Speaker 2: adjectives sort of describe approximately the same thing. Whereas you know,
- 23:44Speaker 2: in scouting, you say, hey, Ruben Bain's a good athlete,
- 23:47Speaker 2: all right, Well, good is worse than very. Good, is
- 23:48Speaker 2: worse than excellent, is better than below average, is better
- 23:51Speaker 2: than better than sort of marginal, whatever it might be.
- 23:54Speaker 2: So I think Bain might be in sort of that
- 23:56Speaker 2: that goodish category averaged goodish category for athletes at that position.
- 24:01Speaker 2: But he gets the job done in other ways that
- 24:04Speaker 2: I think is why he still goes. I have a
- 24:07Speaker 2: hard time seeing him not go in the first half
- 24:09Speaker 2: of the first round, but you know, in a slightly
- 24:12Speaker 2: different world, he might be going in the first six
- 24:14Speaker 2: or seven picks.
- 24:15Speaker 1: He's got to run the Sports Center. Final question for you, Mikey,
- 24:19Speaker 1: you know it's coming. I put you in charge of
- 24:21Speaker 1: the New York Jets. You're selecting who should the Jets
- 24:23Speaker 1: take at number two field.
- 24:25Speaker 4: He's gonna break my heart right now, go ahead?
- 24:27Speaker 2: Yeah, what what I do is I would be thinking
- 24:30Speaker 2: patient and long term. I've got nine picks between this
- 24:33Speaker 2: year and next year.
- 24:34Speaker 1: I can't be any more patient than I've been Field
- 24:37Speaker 1: and Jesus thirteen years.
- 24:38Speaker 4: Buddy, I understand what you're saying.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Forty for me, but I understand what you're saying.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Yeah, rvel Reese would be my pick. You're going to
- 24:45Speaker 2: go David Bailey Reese. This is a good note from Mal.
- 24:49Speaker 2: He told me this a couple of days ago. Arvelle
- 24:51Speaker 2: Reese is two years and two days younger than David Bailey,
- 24:54Speaker 2: so the trajectory for him is very different for a
- 24:55Speaker 2: lot of reasons. Now, is there a higher bus rate
- 24:58Speaker 2: with rvel Reese? Perhaps you even't seen him do it
- 25:01Speaker 2: as much at the past rushing spot as you have
- 25:04Speaker 2: with David Bailey, But is the upside higher? In my opinion,
- 25:07Speaker 2: it's higher, all right?
- 25:10Speaker 1: So rees is they're not gonna take them, Mikey, that's
- 25:13Speaker 1: the problem.
- 25:13Speaker 4: No, they're taking Bailey because we should take Grease. Yeah,
- 25:16Speaker 4: we'll get you out of here.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I have a proposal for you. You love the NBA, okay,
- 25:20Speaker 1: and we love you and we love having you on.
- 25:22Speaker 1: So when Sunday comes and you throw all those fucking
- 25:25Speaker 1: mock drafts in the garbage and get rid of all
- 25:27Speaker 1: the notes that you have. You want to come on
- 25:29Speaker 1: every week and break down the NBA playoffs with us?
- 25:31Speaker 5: What do you do?
- 25:32Speaker 4: Why not?
- 25:32Speaker 2: Let's kidd you. I would love to talk hoops. Yeah.
- 25:35Speaker 2: I actually was happy, by the way, Like it was weird.
- 25:38Speaker 2: We got good games last night. We got to like
- 25:41Speaker 2: a right for the mix obviously. Yeah, like the games,
- 25:46Speaker 2: you know, I mean, like I thought we were cruising
- 25:48Speaker 2: towards potentially like six sweeps in the man sweeps, but
- 25:51Speaker 2: like six series of five games or less. Yes, it
- 25:55Speaker 2: seems like we're gonna have, you know, some some good
- 25:57Speaker 2: spirited series instead, which is great for everybody involved.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Yes, the weekend was boring, But what you're saying is
- 26:02Speaker 1: last night the playoffs began. Yes, James one right, Yes,
- 26:06Speaker 1: that's right, all right. Check them out ESPN First Draft,
- 26:09Speaker 1: check out the podcast there. He'll be all over your
- 26:11Speaker 1: draft coverage on ESPN this entire week, and then he'll
- 26:14Speaker 1: throw everything in the garbage.
- 26:15Speaker 4: Peel.
- 26:16Speaker 1: We love you, Thank you for doing this, buddy. We know,
- 26:18Speaker 1: we know it's a busy time for you.
