- 0:00This is The Catholic Current, with Fr. Robert McTague.
- 0:05I remember asking Cardinal Arince, who is the only living father of Vatican II now,
- 0:11I think at the age of 93, but I asked him one time,
- 0:15what would be the reaction of the average bishop from Vatican II
- 0:19walking into the average American church on a Sunday morning,
- 0:22and it would be holding the liturgy, and he said they would die of cardiac arrest.
- 0:27I feel that way anyway, and I wasn't even at Vatican II.
- 0:34Praised be Jesus Christ, this is Fr. Robert McTague of The Society of Jesus,
- 0:38your daily host for The Catholic Current,
- 0:40where we bring Christ to the world, and the world to Christ.
- 0:42You're listening to us from the station of The Cross Studios,
- 0:44your local radio station, and the iCatholic Radio mobile app,
- 0:47where we proclaim the fullness of truth with clarity and charity.
- 0:51As always, let's start with prayer.
- 0:53In the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- 0:55Almighty God, through the intercession of St. Ignatius of Loyola,
- 0:58we ask that you pour forth your Holy Spirit upon us,
- 1:00a spirit of discernment that may hear your voice and obey your command.
- 1:04In the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
- 1:07Well, here it is, Friday at The Catholic Current, friends.
- 1:09You know what that means, you and me.
- 1:11Let's talk about this. We'll walk through a complex issue together.
- 1:15Fulton Sheen is going to be beatified in September in St. Louis,
- 1:20and so I've decided from time to time I'm going to look at his work.
- 1:25Now, everybody loves his videos, and Life is Worth Living.
- 1:28His TV work is amazing.
- 1:30His sermons preached on Good Friday are amazing.
- 1:35But I'm going to go old school.
- 1:37I want to focus on his written work.
- 1:40He wrote a lot.
- 1:43And I think especially his earliest work is worth looking at very carefully.
- 1:50He's obviously a great writer.
- 1:52He's a highly cultured man, a highly educated man.
- 1:55His books are accessible.
- 1:58I'm going to be referring to a book he wrote here called Moods and Truths.
- 2:03It was published in 1932 as a sequel to the book we've spoken about earlier
- 2:09called Old Errors and New Labels.
- 2:12So this is kind of a sequel.
- 2:14It's only 165 pages.
- 2:16I read it in one sitting at a coffee shop over a cup of coffee.
- 2:21It's a quick read, but it's a very rich read.
- 2:25And part of me is just tempted to just read the whole book out loud.
- 2:30I don't think we're allowed to do that.
- 2:32I think Mr. Engineer would probably pull the plug if I tried.
- 2:35That having been said, it was also a poignant read for me
- 2:41for a number of reasons because the things he says with absolute Catholic certitude
- 2:48seem to have, how shall we say this gently,
- 2:52a different status in the minds and hearts of our brothers and sisters in Christ,
- 2:59the synodalists.
- 3:01Let me give you some examples.
- 3:02Fulton Sheen says,
- 3:04The Church will always be hated by the world for many good reasons,
- 3:09and one of them, a source of hatred, which is a badge of honor for the Church,
- 3:14is that the Church will never ever compromise on the indissolubility of marriage.
- 3:22We are the last institutions that will not yield on this issue.
- 3:28Hey, Fulton Sheen, you know what's happening in October?
- 3:31They're going to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Amoris Laetitia,
- 3:34and they're going to discuss what the Spirit is saying now about marriage.
- 3:41Now, what he says about marriage, Fulton Sheen says,
- 3:44And another reason the Church will always hate us
- 3:47is because we will never ever compromise on the issue of birth control.
- 3:52We are the last major institution that will not yield.
- 3:58Well, a lot of water over the dam since 1968 in Humanae Vitae, Your Excellency.
- 4:06And then also regarding ecumenism, what he says in the 1930s about ecumenism.
- 4:12As he was writing that book, I think there was just a completion.
- 4:16I think it was in Chicago.
- 4:18There was a meeting of the Worldwide Congress of the World's Religions,
- 4:23and Fulton Sheen boasted,
- 4:25And not one Catholic representative attended that meeting of the World Congress of the World's Religions
- 4:35because, rightly so, we are the single Church Christ founded,
- 4:41and we will gladly talk to other religions but only to convince them to become Catholics.
- 4:49Suffice to say that that mood has shifted, that train has left the station,
- 4:55and now it's dialogue, dialogue, dialogue to the nth degree,
- 5:00and a woman claiming to be the Archbishop of Canterbury got the royal treatment in Rome.
- 5:07So things have changed since 1932, since Fulton Sheen wrote this book.
- 5:16Now here's the question. Since 1932, has human nature changed?
- 5:23Has Christ changed?
- 5:27With that in mind, and mindful of the fact that one of the synodal study groups
- 5:32was talking about really changing the hierarchical nature of the Church,
- 5:37I want to read to you some quotes from Fulton Sheen from Chapter 5.
- 5:43It's called The Freedom of Authority.
- 5:46And man, oh man, he saw a lot of this coming.
- 5:50Fulton Sheen writes this.
- 5:52I wish I could do, I wish I was a great mimic and I could do a convincing Fulton Sheen voice,
- 5:58but I can't, but I'll do my best.
- 6:00So this is from the first paragraph, Chapter 5.
- 6:03Stevenson once said that not on bread alone doth man live, but principally on catchwords.
- 6:10And I think by catchwords here, he means slogans, or we would say now, memes.
- 6:16He goes on,
- 6:17High-sounding phrases often go rattling by like express trains,
- 6:21carrying the burden of those who are too lazy to think for themselves.
- 6:26Among these phrases or catchwords, there was none in the field of religion
- 6:30which has greater modern appeal than the one that says,
- 6:33the modern man wants a religion of the spirit, not a religion of authority.
- 6:38Years ago, its popular expression was that we must be free from the slavery of Rome.
- 6:44Today, it is more direct.
- 6:46No Catholic can be free because he is bound by law and authority.
- 6:51So this is how Fulton Sheen kicks off this paragraph.
- 6:55And I know that recently, the powers that be have found the cudgels of authority,
- 7:01in light of what took place in Switzerland about a week or so ago.
- 7:05But otherwise, yeah, not so much.
- 7:07So he, Sheen, wants to set out three propositions.
- 7:12He says, first, the necessity of law and authority.
- 7:15Second, obedience to the highest law and authority constitutes freedom.
- 7:20And thirdly, obedience to the law of the church is thrilling and romantic.
- 7:26And regarding the first, the necessity of law and authority,
- 7:30he says, public opinion is the common stock and thought and sentiment
- 7:35created by the human society and the realm of religion outside of the church.
- 7:40It is practically always a compromise.
- 7:43And he says that the church must not compromise.
- 7:49He says this, modern religion affirms just as much of spiritual and moral truth
- 7:54as in a given condition will keep society together, just so much and no more.
- 7:59It affirms not the whole law of God, but extracts from it.
- 8:02And only those extracts which seem to be most useful for social purposes
- 8:06and of which society itself will approve.
- 8:10And this is where he starts throwing knockout punches.
- 8:15He says this, for example, at the present time,
- 8:18it dilates on the Sermon of the Mount, but says absolutely nothing about the Last Judgment.
- 8:24It quotes, behold the lilies of the field, but never the text.
- 8:29What exchange shall a man give for his soul? Pow!
- 8:34And he talks about the importance of not compromising with the world.
- 8:40He writes this, religion thus compromises or strikes an average
- 8:45between what is good and what is bad.
- 8:47It approves Christ only as much as Christ approves it.
- 8:51It accepts his teachings and his authority only in as much as its maxims and opinions
- 8:56approve those teachings.
- 8:59What that means for the synodalist is we will endorse Christ to the degree
- 9:04that he conforms and validates to our lived experience.
- 9:09He goes on to say, hence the problem confronting the religious man of today
- 9:14is not whether he will obey or disobey law and authority,
- 9:18but which of the two he will obey, namely the authority of public opinion
- 9:22or the authority of Christ and tradition.
- 9:25And all thinking men, as a celebrated English essayist has put it,
- 9:29want a religion today which is right not when the world is right,
- 9:33but is right when the world is wrong.
- 9:35I believe he's quoting Chesterton there.
- 9:38And friends, this is so very important.
- 9:42There are so many people eager to rush to the microphone
- 9:48and apologize on behalf of the church.
- 9:53Many years ago as a young priest I went to a worldwide meeting of Catholic ecumenists,
- 10:00and I still remember vividly the leaders of this conference.
- 10:04Now, I was ordained about two weeks, and everyone else was older than me,
- 10:09and I was told by the leader of this conference that what the world needs to do now
- 10:15is to learn to sit in silence at the feet of the world's religions.
- 10:22That is something that Fulton Sheen would never say.
- 10:27That's certainly not anything that I can say,
- 10:31and I certainly can't think of any saint who would agree with that.
- 10:37Now, here's my question for you.
- 10:40The most ardent advocates of synodality that you know,
- 10:44do you think they would agree with the assertion
- 10:49that what the world most needs to do right now is sit in silence
- 10:54at the feet of the world's religions?
- 10:58I'm Jesuit Father Robert McTague, your host here every day here at The Catholic Current.

- 12:55Here we are, Friday, let's talk about this.
- 12:57We're talking about more warnings from Fulton Sheen,
- 13:01referring to a book he published in 1932 called Moods and Truths.
- 13:06And I think, I'm going to go out on a limb here,
- 13:10that you will view synodality differently if you treat yourself
- 13:15and read this book.
- 13:17It's only 165 pages.
- 13:19I read it in one sitting in a coffee shop.
- 13:22It's not that hard.
- 13:25I'm going to refer to Chapter 9, The Curse of Broadmindedness.
- 13:31A common trope, a common theme, a common slogan,
- 13:36what Fulton Sheen would call a catchword or a catchphrase,
- 13:41is spoken often by even senior members of the Catholic cadre,
- 13:47of the people who should really know better club.
- 13:49And it goes something like this,
- 13:51nobody has a monopoly on the truth.
- 13:54Well, number one, that's a meaningless statement.
- 13:58Number two, you haven't presented anyone
- 14:02who said he has a monopoly on the truth.
- 14:05But there are very true life-saving, soul-saving things
- 14:11that the Christ of God entrusted to the one church he founded,
- 14:16and we heirs of that deposit of faith have a profound obligation
- 14:22before God to hand on that deposit of faith intact.
- 14:29And we will not enjoy heaven if we fail to do that.
- 14:35I cannot think of any saint or council
- 14:39that would disagree with that statement.
- 14:42So let me just begin to read a little bit from Chapter 9 here,
- 14:46and then offer my own take on what Fulton Sheen says.
- 14:50Fulton Sheen writes,
- 14:51The Catholic Church intolerant.
- 14:53That simple thought, he goes on, like a yellow fever sign,
- 14:57is supposed to be the one solid reason
- 14:59which should frighten away anyone who might be contemplating
- 15:03knocking at the portals of the church for entrance
- 15:06or for a crumb of the bread of life.
- 15:08When proof of this statement is asked,
- 15:10it is retorted that the church is intolerant
- 15:12because of its self-complacency and smug satisfaction
- 15:17as the unique interpreter of the thoughts of Christ.
- 15:21Sheen goes on,
- 15:22Its narrow-mindedness is supposed to be revealed
- 15:25and its unwillingness to cooperate effectively
- 15:27with other Christian bodies that are working for the union of churches.
- 15:31Within the last ten years,
- 15:32two great world conferences on religion have been held
- 15:35in which every great religion except the Catholic participated.
- 15:39The Catholic Church was invited to discuss
- 15:41the two important subjects of doctrine and ministry,
- 15:44but she refused the invitation.
- 15:47My goodness, how times have changed.
- 15:51That is my observation.
- 15:55We seem to be very enthusiastic,
- 15:58not just to get along,
- 16:00but to even change in light of what other religions claim.
- 16:07So Sheen takes us to the arrest of Jesus
- 16:11and his meeting with Annas, the high priest.
- 16:16And he talks about the confrontation
- 16:21between Annas and our Lord.
- 16:25And he answered Annas, he says,
- 16:27I have spoken openly to the world,
- 16:29and in secret I spoke nothing.
- 16:32Why do you ask me?
- 16:34Ask them who have heard me,
- 16:36that what I spoke to them.
- 16:37Behold, they know the things which I said.
- 16:40So he's saying, look, Annas,
- 16:41you're implying by your questioning that I'm not divine,
- 16:44that I'm just the same as the other rabbis
- 16:47going up and down the countryside,
- 16:49that I'm just another one of Israel's prophets,
- 16:51and that I am at most only a man.
- 16:54I know that you would welcome me to your heart
- 16:57if I would say that I am only human.
- 16:59And then Fulton Sheen puts these words
- 17:01in the mouth of our Lord.
- 17:03But no, I have spoken openly to the world.
- 17:06I have declared my divinity.
- 17:07I say unto you, I have exercised the right of divinity,
- 17:11for I have forgiven sins.
- 17:13I have left my body and blood for posterity,
- 17:16and rather than deny its reality,
- 17:18I've lost those who followed me
- 17:20who were scandalized at my words.
- 17:23He's referring to Gospel of John chapter six.
- 17:26Sheen goes on putting these words in our Lord's mouth.
- 17:29It was only last night that I told Philip
- 17:31the Father and I are one,
- 17:33and that I will ask my Father
- 17:34to send the spirit of truth to the church.
- 17:37I have found it on Peter,
- 17:39which will endure to the end of time.
- 17:42Ask those who have heard me.
- 17:44They will tell you what things I have said.
- 17:46I have no other doctrine than that which I declared
- 17:49when I drove your dove hucksters out of the temple
- 17:53and declared it to be my Father's house.
- 17:56That which I have preached,
- 17:57that which angels declared at my birth,
- 18:00that which I revealed on Tabor,
- 18:01that which I now declare before you,
- 18:03namely my divinity.
- 18:05And if your first principle is that I am not divine,
- 18:08but I'm just human like you yourself,
- 18:10there is nothing in common between us.
- 18:14So why askest thou me
- 18:16to discuss doctrine and ministry with you?
- 18:20Pow!
- 18:21Fulton Sheen knew our Lord.
- 18:25He knew the scriptures.
- 18:27He knew the saints.
- 18:28He knew sacred tradition.
- 18:29He knew what the church has always taught.
- 18:33And I think he would say that from moment to moment,
- 18:37even now,
- 18:39our Christ stands before Annas and Caiaphas
- 18:44and Pilate and the mob.
- 18:47And Christ's answers never change.
- 18:50Let me read to you from the next paragraph.
- 18:52And some brute standing nearby,
- 18:55feeling himself the humiliation of the high priest
- 18:58at such an uncompromising response,
- 19:00struck our blessed Lord across the face
- 19:03with a mailed fist,
- 19:04drawing out of him two things,
- 19:06blood and a soft answer.
- 19:09And this is my favorite line of scripture.
- 19:11If what I say is false, produce the evidence.
- 19:15But if what I say is true, why hit me?
- 19:19Sheen goes on.
- 19:20And that soldier in the courtroom of Annas
- 19:22has gone down in history
- 19:24as the representative of that great group
- 19:26that bears a hatred against divinity,
- 19:29the group that never closed the hatred
- 19:31in any intellectual language,
- 19:33but rather in violence alone.
- 19:36Because remember, friends,
- 19:37if God is God, then we are not.
- 19:42If God is God, then we are not.
- 19:45If Jesus of Nazareth is Son of Mary and Son of God,
- 19:49if he is the Christ of God,
- 19:51then he is and must be and always will be
- 19:54and can only be King,
- 19:58King above the state,
- 20:01King above the party,
- 20:03King above the ideology,
- 20:07and his sovereign will is above our rebellious will.
- 20:12And when we have been infected,
- 20:14when we have been infected
- 20:17with that hell-sourced spirit of rebellion,
- 20:22and that rage says,
- 20:24non servium, I will not serve,
- 20:28which is the opposite of the Marian declaration,
- 20:31let it be done unto me according to thy word.
- 20:34When we say no to the word of the Father,
- 20:39our response must be hate,
- 20:42and it must be rage,
- 20:44because like fallen Satan,
- 20:47we know that Christ cannot be defeated.
- 20:52And if we build our kingdom in this world,
- 20:56it will come to an end.
- 20:59And if we build our life on possessions and power,
- 21:03we know, like everyone else,
- 21:06we will die paupers,
- 21:08because there are no pockets in a shroud.
- 21:11And if we have any sense at all,
- 21:13if we pay any attention to the natural law
- 21:16inscribed in our heart by God at all,
- 21:18we will know, we will know
- 21:21that the only thing we bring with us into the nest life
- 21:25is our character, is our virtue.
- 21:29And as C.S. Lewis says,
- 21:31anyone who's tried hard to be good
- 21:32knows how hard it is to be good.
- 21:35And we can have virtue,
- 21:37lasting virtue,
- 21:39only with the help of God's grace.
- 21:43So we either worship God and find our freedom and our joy,
- 21:47or we choose idols
- 21:50and condemn ourselves to a misery
- 21:53that begins in this life
- 21:55and doesn't ever end in hell.
- 21:59Those are our only choices.
- 22:04And there are people throughout history,
- 22:06and even as I speak,
- 22:09there are people who tell us,
- 22:10no, no, no, there is a third way.
- 22:15It doesn't have to be Christ or the world,
- 22:17the flesh, and the devil.
- 22:18It doesn't have to be Thomas, Aquinas, or Nietzsche.
- 22:21It doesn't have to be heaven or hell.
- 22:24We can have Christ as our enthusiastic mascot
- 22:28as we are chaplains to the NGOs of the world,
- 22:32redistributing the wealth of others
- 22:35after we take our cut for administrative purposes,
- 22:38don't you know?
- 22:39And the world is going to like us and applaud us.
- 22:45And we'll acknowledge how wise and good
- 22:49and tolerant and broad-minded
- 22:52and welcoming and nonjudgmental we are.
- 22:57We will have the gold coin of Caesar,
- 23:01and we will have the applause of the jesters.
- 23:07And even if we have both without interruption,
- 23:12we will not take them with us into the next life.
- 23:17We will take with us the consequences
- 23:19of having chosen for or against Christ.
- 23:22Fulton Sheen was a prayerful man.
- 23:25He was a cultured man.
- 23:26He was a learned man.
- 23:28He understood human nature,
- 23:30and he understood human history.
- 23:34And my fear, my lament, my grief, my heartache
- 23:39is that we are living in a time
- 23:40when senior Catholic cadres of the
- 23:42People Who Should Really Know Better Club
- 23:45would tell us this time it's different.
- 23:50We can decide for ourselves
- 23:53what the Spirit is saying now and anew.
- 23:59And we don't need to submit ourselves
- 24:01to discipline or doctrines.
- 24:05And we certainly don't need to submit ourselves
- 24:09to the cross, and we need not view this world
- 24:15as the veil of tears.
- 24:18We're told there is a third way
- 24:21where we can have our heaven on this earth,
- 24:25and this earthly heaven will be the work of human hands.
- 24:30Friends, this is just the Tower of Babel all over again.
- 24:36This is the proud offering of Cain
- 24:39rather than the humble sacrifice of Abel.
- 24:43We already know how this story will end
- 24:47if, God forbid, we choose to sign our name to it.
- 24:53Please, dear God, let's make better choices.

- 26:48Here we are at the last segment
- 26:49of our first episode of the Catholic Current.
- 26:52Here we are at the last segment of a Friday.
- 26:54Let's talk about this.
- 26:55We're talking about more warnings from Fulton Sheen.
- 26:58We're making our way through a book Sheen published in 1932
- 27:03called Moods and Truths.
- 27:05And just as I was getting ready
- 27:06to record this last segment,
- 27:09Mr. Engineer was a witness to this.
- 27:12A friend of mine forwarded me a notice
- 27:14from the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano.
- 27:18There's an article by a woman who's a theologian
- 27:22who claims that Genesis does not actually contain
- 27:26a devil and original sin.
- 27:28All right, with that in mind,
- 27:32let's turn to chapter 12 of Moods and Truths
- 27:35by Fulton Sheen called The Ignorance of the Learned.
- 27:39Now, when people start making smart-mouth remarks
- 27:42about academics and learning and book knowledge, et cetera,
- 27:46for me it rings more true
- 27:48if the person has a serious education.
- 27:53Otherwise, you're just mocking things you don't understand.
- 27:55So Fulton Sheen had a doctorate in philosophy
- 27:58from the University of Leuven in Belgium,
- 28:00which at the time was one of the most prestigious
- 28:03Catholic universities in the world.
- 28:06Several years ago it announced,
- 28:08yeah, we're not really quite so Catholic.
- 28:10We're just gonna take Catholic out of the title.
- 28:12It'll be fine.
- 28:13And then he got a very, very distinguished
- 28:16post-doctoral degree in philosophy.
- 28:18So he was a genius.
- 28:20So I'm just gonna read to you from some of chapter 12,
- 28:24The Ignorance of the Learned.
- 28:26And I want, as you hear it, think of this person,
- 28:30this theologian, writing not just on a subway wall
- 28:35or a bathroom stall, but rather is writing
- 28:38in basically the official newspaper,
- 28:40the Vatican, L'Osservatore Romano,
- 28:42that the idea of the devil and original sin
- 28:45isn't really part of what Genesis means.
- 28:48Fulton Sheen begins,
- 28:49Four judges sat in judgment against the Lord
- 28:52and Savior of the world,
- 28:53and they condemned him to death
- 28:55on contradictory charges.
- 28:57He was condemned for being too dogmatic before Caiaphas
- 29:01because he enunciated the doctrine of his divinity.
- 29:04He was accused of being too undogmatic before Annas
- 29:08because he refused to make any pronouncements
- 29:10concerning his doctrine and his ministry.
- 29:12He was accused of being too worldly before Pilate
- 29:16because he was perverting the nation.
- 29:18He was accused of being too unworldly before Herod
- 29:22because he refused to do the worldly thing
- 29:25and perform a trick of magic to gain his release.
- 29:29Sheen continues,
- 29:30Too dogmatic, too undogmatic, too worldly, too unworldly.
- 29:34Men could not agree on why he should die,
- 29:37but they did agree that he should die.
- 29:40Where find a fitting punishment
- 29:42for one condemned on contradictory charges?
- 29:45The only fitting death
- 29:46for one condemned on contradictory charges
- 29:48is not scourging nor stoning,
- 29:52but the crucifixion.
- 29:54For on the cross,
- 29:55one bar is at variance or contradiction with another.
- 30:00And I know Fulton Sheen said later in life,
- 30:03Our Lord died on a cross, not on a fence.
- 30:06Now listen to this.
- 30:07I just wanted to underline this whole page.
- 30:10And so the king is sent to his death
- 30:14for a bed, a cross, for a pillow, a crown of thorns.
- 30:18And lest his hands and feet should slip out,
- 30:20they tuck them in with nails.
- 30:22The king is hanging from a peg.
- 30:24I, more than a king, truth, justice, mercy, God.
- 30:27And the three great civilizations of the world
- 30:30saw him hang and suffer and die
- 30:33for he was crucified in the language of Hebrew,
- 30:36Latin, and Greek.
- 30:38And the civilizations of Jerusalem, Rome, and Athens
- 30:42in the name of religion, law, and morality,
- 30:45in the name of the good, the true, and the beautiful.
- 30:48Jerusalem was the city of religion
- 30:50and it condemned the one who brought it religion.
- 30:54Latin Rome was the city of law
- 30:56and it condemned the law maker.
- 30:59Athens was the city of morality
- 31:02and it condemned the sinless.
- 31:05Think of the education you have to have
- 31:08to be able to write a paragraph like that.
- 31:10He continues,
- 31:12Representatives of each of these civilizations
- 31:15pass beneath the banner of the cross
- 31:17and hurl the challenge, each in their own language.
- 31:20Come down from the cross and we will believe.
- 31:23What happened in those terrible moments of hate
- 31:25was not something that would pass into history
- 31:28as did the battle of Marathon.
- 31:30What was happening was the first scene
- 31:32in an abiding drama,
- 31:34the curtain of which will not ring down
- 31:37until the crack of doom.
- 31:40It is now the mystic Christ, or the church,
- 31:43which is hanging on the cross.
- 31:45And today, just as 20 centuries ago,
- 31:48she is being crucified in the modern civilizations
- 31:51of Jerusalem, Rome, and Athens
- 31:54in the name of modern religion,
- 31:57modern law, and modern morality.
- 32:01So says Fulton Sheen.
- 32:04And I have to ask you, in light of these words
- 32:07from this prayerful, learned, holy man,
- 32:10how might he and how might we
- 32:14evaluate synodality?
- 32:17Let's continue with Fulton Sheen.
- 32:19And modern religion marches beneath the cross,
- 32:23looks up to the church crucified thereon
- 32:26by an unbelieving world.
- 32:28And who is there who has not heard the marcher say
- 32:31at least a thousand times,
- 32:33come down from your belief in infallibility.
- 32:36Come down from your belief in the primacy of Peter.
- 32:40Come down from your attachment to the divinity of Christ.
- 32:43Come down from your devotion to the Virgin Mary
- 32:46and the saints.
- 32:47Come down from your belief that you are
- 32:49the one true unique spouse,
- 32:51the church of Christ.
- 32:53Can you not see that there are other crosses
- 32:55in Calvary besides your own?
- 32:57Come down and we will believe.
- 33:00Friends, this is devastating to read
- 33:03because now those who walk by
- 33:06the crucified church
- 33:09are not just scoffers
- 33:12and atheists and agnostics
- 33:15and Marxists and Freudians
- 33:18and Bolsheviks,
- 33:21but rather they are members
- 33:24of the people who should really know better club.
- 33:27Members of the Catholic cadres
- 33:29of the people who should know better club.
- 33:32God help us, even senior Catholic members
- 33:37of the people who should really know better club.
- 33:41They too are asking us
- 33:44to step away from the primacy of Peter,
- 33:47the divinity of Christ,
- 33:50the uniqueness of the church of Christ.
- 33:53Sheen continues.
- 33:55And next, modern law,
- 33:57modern in the sense that it is broken with Christian tradition,
- 34:00takes its stand beneath the cross
- 34:02and who is there who is not already familiar
- 34:05with its taunts and pleadings?
- 34:07Come down from your belief in the law of eternal justice.
- 34:10Come down from your belief in hell.
- 34:13Come down from your belief that the laws of Christ
- 34:15are more sound than the laws of the state.
- 34:18Come down from your belief in the law of mortification.
- 34:22For who is there in the pagan world
- 34:24who wants your penance and your suffering?
- 34:27Look to the sorry end it has brought you now.
- 34:30Come down from your cross and we will believe.
- 34:35So even now, friends,
- 34:38even among the Catholic cadres
- 34:41of the people who should really know better club,
- 34:44perhaps, just perhaps,
- 34:46even among the strongest advocates of synodality,
- 34:51we are asked to take away eternal justice,
- 34:56take away hell,
- 34:59take away the rights of Christ the King over the state.
- 35:04Even now.
- 35:05Continue reading Sheen.
- 35:07And finally, the third of the enduring civilizations,
- 35:10the teachers of modern morality,
- 35:12advances beneath the same cross.
- 35:14And who is there living in this great era of carnality
- 35:18who has not heard their taunts a thousand times
- 35:21as they sneer at the church?
- 35:23Come down from your belief in the sanctity of marriage.
- 35:26Come down from your belief in virginity and celibacy.
- 35:29Come down from your age-long opposition to divorce.
- 35:33Come down from your opposition to sex
- 35:36when all the world is mad about it.
- 35:39Come down from your opposition to birth control.
- 35:42Can you not see that the acids of morality
- 35:46have eaten away your age-old morality?
- 35:49Come down from the cross
- 35:52and we will believe.
- 35:56Friends, as I was reading this in this coffee shop,
- 35:58I wanted to overturn a table
- 36:00and say, stop what you're doing,
- 36:02turn off that music,
- 36:04and listen to this.
- 36:06And let's fall on our knees and cry out,
- 36:09Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
- 36:13But the horror as I see it,
- 36:16and please do correct me if I'm wrong,
- 36:18contact me at thestationofthecross.com
- 36:20slash askfather.
- 36:21Say, no, Father, you're wrong.
- 36:23There are no members of the People
- 36:25Who Should Really Know Better Club
- 36:27who are asking us to reconsider
- 36:30the teachings on marriage and family.
- 36:33October will be the 10th anniversary celebration
- 36:36of Amoris Laetitia.
- 36:38We'll see.
- 36:39Let's go back to Sheen.
- 36:41But the church does not come down,
- 36:43though 10,000 times 10,000 tongues
- 36:45are loud in their pleading,
- 36:47it does not come down
- 36:49because Christ did not come down.
- 36:51It is easy to step from great heights
- 36:53when the world scorns,
- 36:55but it is the sign of a martyr
- 36:57to die for an ideal.
- 36:59It is easy to come down
- 37:01and follow the world,
- 37:03but it is noble to remain suspended
- 37:06and draw the world to himself.
- 37:09It is human to come down.
- 37:12It is divine to hang their friends.
- 37:15Please buy this book and read all of it.
- 37:18Let me continue at Sheen.
- 37:20But will there never be a reconciliation
- 37:23between the world and the church?
- 37:25Must the one always be hanging on the cross
- 37:28and a parent to feed,
- 37:29and the other walk in the earth
- 37:31and a parent victory?
- 37:32Ah, there is the possibility of reconciliation,
- 37:35and it resides in the words of forgiveness
- 37:38pronounced the first time
- 37:40by our blessed Lord on the cross
- 37:42and now repeated for the thousandth time
- 37:44by the church on its cross.
- 37:47Friends,
- 37:51this is hard.
- 37:55Again, it's not secularists.
- 38:00It's not just sectarians.
- 38:03It's not those who don't believe
- 38:05in the Christ of God.
- 38:06It's not those who reject the Trinity.
- 38:10It's not just arrogant academics.
- 38:15I hear from many people all over the world,
- 38:17clergy and lay,
- 38:19and they tell me,
- 38:20Father, I'm afraid that it's other Catholics
- 38:25who are telling Christ and the church
- 38:29to come down.
- 38:31I want to be wrong about this.
- 38:32Please let me know if you think I am.
- 38:35Let me read just a few more sentences
- 38:38before we run out of time.
- 38:39Sheen writes,
- 38:46And he quotes our Lord saying,
- 38:51If you had been of the world,
- 38:52the world would love its own,
- 38:53but because you are not of the world,
- 38:55I have chosen you out of the world.
- 38:57Therefore, the world hateth you.
- 38:59Remember, the servant is not greater
- 39:01than his master.
- 39:03And Sheen says we must be hated
- 39:05even as Christ himself was hated.
- 39:08We must be abused as Christ himself was abused.
- 39:11We must be prepared to be told again and again
- 39:13that we are ignorant
- 39:14because we do not know
- 39:15that modern psychology has disproved the soul
- 39:18that we are benighted fools.
- 39:20Because we do not know
- 39:21that higher biblical criticism
- 39:22has destroyed the authenticity of scripture.
- 39:24That we are narrow minded
- 39:26because we do not accept
- 39:27the unmoral interpretations of God's law.
- 39:30That we are a race of darkened minds
- 39:32because we do not know
- 39:33that evolution has proved original sin to be a myth.
- 39:37That we are ignorant
- 39:38because we do not know
- 39:39that science has dispensed with providence
- 39:42with God and with Christ.
- 39:44Oh friends,
- 39:45I have so much more to say about this.
- 39:49Please do read this book
- 39:52and then make a holy hour of reparation for me
- 39:57and for all those
- 39:58who even now seem to be asking Christ
- 40:01to come down from the cross.

- 41:21This is Fr. Robert McTague
- 41:22of the Society of Jesus,
- 41:24your daily host for The Catholic Current,
- 41:26where we bring Christ to the world
- 41:27and the world to Christ.
- 41:28You're listening to us

- 41:33where we proclaim the fullness of truth
- 41:35with clarity and charity.
- 41:37Here we are,
- 41:38the last segment of our Friday.
- 41:39You know what that means,
- 41:40Weekend Readiness,
- 41:41me reviewing the headlines of the week
- 41:42in light of the upcoming Sunday Scriptures,
- 41:44so we'll be all prayed up for Sunday Mass.
- 41:46We started off with another set of warnings
- 41:48from Fulton Sheen,
- 41:49this time from a book he published in 1932
- 41:52called Moods and Truths.
- 41:54In the last segment,
- 41:55I read to you from a chapter
- 41:57where he was talking about,
- 41:59on Calvary and Good Friday,
- 42:00all the different people
- 42:02who told Christ to come down from the cross
- 42:04and he refused.
- 42:06Then throughout history,
- 42:08people are asking the Church
- 42:10to come down from the cross.
- 42:13The Church, who wants to remain
- 42:16with her crucified Lord,
- 42:18is viewed as foolish
- 42:20in the eyes of the world.
- 42:22We are told that we are ignorant
- 42:24because we're not doing
- 42:25what the cool kids do.
- 42:27There's a paragraph here
- 42:28that's a real punch in the gut
- 42:30that I want to read to you.
- 42:32Sheen writes,
- 42:33Yes, we are ignorant,
- 42:34ignorant of the false wisdom of the world,
- 42:37ignorant of the wisdom of the age,
- 42:40ignorant of all that false wisdom
- 42:42which would blind us
- 42:43to the enlightening truths
- 42:45of the Eternal Son,
- 42:47ignorant of modern pagan ways.
- 42:49Oh, Holy Father in Heaven,
- 42:52we thank Thee that we are ignorant,
- 42:55ignorant of those things
- 42:57which keep us from Thee.
- 42:59It is not the wisdom of the world
- 43:01that saves, it is ignorance.
- 43:04So let's go on.
- 43:05Sheen says,
- 43:06Hence there is not a loyal Catholic heart
- 43:08in the world,
- 43:09kneeling at the foot of the cross,
- 43:11that is ignorant of the reason
- 43:13of all forgiveness,
- 43:14and from such a heart
- 43:15comes this plaintive prayer.
- 43:17Let me read to you this prayer.
- 43:19Oh, Jesus,
- 43:20I do not want to know the world.
- 43:23I do not want to know
- 43:24the pride of the world
- 43:26which crowns Thy head with thorns.
- 43:28I do not want to know
- 43:30how nails of selfishness are driven,
- 43:33nor how the spear of bitterness is launched.
- 43:37I do not want to know
- 43:38how snowflakes are hammered,
- 43:40nor who turns about the Arcturus.
- 43:43I do not want to know
- 43:44the length of this great universe
- 43:46and its expanse and light years.
- 43:48I do not want to know
- 43:49the breadth of the earth
- 43:50as it dances about the chariot of the sun.
- 43:54I do not want to know
- 43:55the heights of the stars
- 43:57as they glitter about
- 43:58the day's dead sanctities.
- 44:01I do not want to know
- 44:02the depth of the sea
- 44:03nor the secrets of its palace.
- 44:06I am willing to be ignorant
- 44:08of all these things.
- 44:10I want to know only one thing,
- 44:12and that is
- 44:14the breadth and length
- 44:15and depth and height
- 44:16of Thy redeeming love on the cross.
- 44:20Sweet Savior of men,
- 44:22I want, dear Jesus,
- 44:24to be ignorant of everything in this world,
- 44:26everything but You,
- 44:27and then,
- 44:28by the strangest of strange paradoxes,
- 44:31I shall be wise.
- 44:34So with that in mind,
- 44:35let's turn to the Lectionary.
- 44:38If you're following
- 44:39the Novus Ordo calendar,
- 44:40the Pauline Rite,
- 44:41we're at the 15th Sunday
- 44:42in Ordinary Time,
- 44:44Lectionary 103.
- 44:47The prophet Isaiah says,
- 44:48Thus says the Lord,
- 44:50He says,
- 44:51My word shall not return to me void,
- 44:53but shall do my will,
- 44:54achieving the end for which I sent it.
- 44:57And he sent his saving word
- 45:00to illuminate and save us,
- 45:04to liberate us from the world,
- 45:06the flesh, and the devil,
- 45:07and to prepare us
- 45:08for perfect glory
- 45:10and the happiness of heaven.
- 45:12And the wisdom of the world says,
- 45:14No, we have a better deal.
- 45:18And the wisdom of Christ,
- 45:19which is foolishness
- 45:20in the eyes of the world,
- 45:22returns to Christ crucified.
- 45:26Let's turn to Romans 8.
- 45:27Romans 8, St. Paul says,
- 45:29I consider that the sufferings
- 45:30of this present time
- 45:31are as nothing compared
- 45:33with the glory to be revealed for us.
- 45:37Friends, I think,
- 45:39especially now,
- 45:40we're called to undergo
- 45:41a crucifixion
- 45:43to be a sign of contradiction.
- 45:46We are living in such strange times.
- 45:51We're told we can't really be sure
- 45:53who is faithful,
- 45:54who is not,
- 45:55who is to be condemned,
- 45:56who is not,
- 45:59who is reverent,
- 46:00who is not,
- 46:02who is in union with Rome,
- 46:05and who is not,
- 46:06who stands on the rock of Peter,
- 46:09and who does not.
- 46:11It is a very confusing time.
- 46:15We're told again,
- 46:16and again, and again,
- 46:17if we just add more water
- 46:18to the broth,
- 46:19if we only become
- 46:21more like the world,
- 46:23the world will like us,
- 46:26and what can be better than that?
- 46:30Recently, someone sent me
- 46:32an Instagram video,
- 46:33God save us,
- 46:34and it was a deacon
- 46:37in a church
- 46:39wearing his vest,
- 46:41so he had it on his alb,
- 46:43and his stole,
- 46:44and his sanctuary,
- 46:45and he had in one hand
- 46:46a therable for incense,
- 46:48and in the other hand,
- 46:51he had a saboreum.
- 46:53Please dear God,
- 46:55it was empty,
- 46:56and not full of consecrated hosts,
- 46:59but in any case,
- 47:00he was filming this inside a church,
- 47:02presumably in the presence
- 47:03of the blessed sacrament,
- 47:04and he was just making a joke
- 47:06to be clever and funny.
- 47:09See how hard we're trying
- 47:11to have the world like us?
- 47:13Isn't that great?
- 47:15What can be better
- 47:16than the world liking us?
- 47:20I don't want to be
- 47:22a part of that effort.
- 47:24I don't think you do either.
- 47:26I think that's why you keep
- 47:27coming back here,
- 47:28the Station of the Cross,
- 47:29because here you can find
- 47:31a sane and sober voice or two,
- 47:34and look at the world,
- 47:37and evaluate the world,
- 47:39in light of what the church
- 47:40has always taught.
- 47:42And yes,
- 47:43there's nothing new
- 47:45in observing that we're walking
- 47:47mourning and weeping
- 47:48in this valley of tears.
- 47:50It is nothing new
- 47:51that is hard to carry across.
- 47:53It's hard to walk
- 47:55in the bloody footsteps of Christ
- 47:57and enter through the narrow gate.
- 47:59It is hard.
- 48:01And this is why
- 48:03we need each other.
- 48:05We need to encourage each other.
- 48:08We need to pray for
- 48:10and with each other.
- 48:12We need to intercede
- 48:14for those who do not yet know,
- 48:17and we need to make reparation
- 48:20for those who did know
- 48:23and who need to come back.
- 48:26Look, friends,
- 48:27I'm a sinner.
- 48:28I'm nobody special.
- 48:30I need militant intercession
- 48:33constantly.
- 48:35But as I get older,
- 48:38I just find sin
- 48:40really boring,
- 48:43and I find the blandishments
- 48:45of the world,
- 48:46the flesh and the devil,
- 48:47really boring.
- 48:49It's the same old
- 48:52you-know-what
- 48:54over and over again.
- 48:58And it's only
- 49:00the offer of Christ
- 49:03who says,
- 49:04follow me.
- 49:05That's the only thrill.
- 49:09That's the only excitement
- 49:11that I'm interested in,
- 49:14is to get to know Him
- 49:16in the hopes of becoming like Him,
- 49:18in the hopes that someday,
- 49:19when I face my judgment
- 49:21before God Almighty,
- 49:23our Heavenly Father will see
- 49:25and love in me
- 49:26what He sees and loves
- 49:27in His only begotten Son.
- 49:28So I work for that.
- 49:29I pray for that.
- 49:30Pray for me
- 49:31as I do pray for you.
- 49:35I'm melancholic.
- 49:36I'm gloomy.
- 49:38That's not good for me.
- 49:39It's not good for you.
- 49:41So let's ask for the grace
- 49:43to be happy warriors,
- 49:46to be grateful fools for Christ,
- 49:50knowing that for His faithful,
- 49:52Christ our Lord will share His victory.
- 49:55May God's holy name be praised
- 49:57now and forever.
