Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, everybody.
- 0:10Speaker 2: We are up and running with the latest edition of
- 0:13Speaker 2: Birds Weekly presented by the Inside the Birds Network. For
- 0:16Speaker 2: that man with the scowl on his face, Barrett Brooks,
- 0:19Speaker 2: I'm Derek Gunn, and oh my goodness. There's absolutely no
- 0:24Speaker 2: way you should lose a football game with eight seconds
- 0:28Speaker 2: left in the game, barring everybody across the Delaware Valley
- 0:31Speaker 2: and across America whose Eagles fans were screaming, kick that
- 0:35Speaker 2: ball out of bounds, but no.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Your coach.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Your kicker decides to kick a line drive to Abdullah,
- 0:43Speaker 2: who finds a gaping hole on the right side, and
- 0:47Speaker 2: the rest is history.
- 0:49Speaker 1: What were your thoughts.
- 0:50Speaker 2: In that particular time after the Eagles had marched down
- 0:53Speaker 2: the field and taken the lead?
- 0:56Speaker 3: Oh, that their kicker, what's his name, Little? That he's
- 0:59Speaker 3: kicked a 70-yard field goal before. We watched him do
- 1:01Speaker 3: 70-yard field goals in practice.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Oh, by the way, they returned to kick the first
- 1:08Speaker 1: play of the game. The first play of the game.
- 1:12Speaker 3: So evidently they saw some inefficiencies in how they, you know,
- 1:16Speaker 3: our kickoff coverage was. So there was something going on, man.
- 1:20Speaker 3: And then, you know, when they did kick it off
- 1:22Speaker 3: to them, they had the perfect call. Evidently it was
- 1:26Speaker 3: a return right. And when they kicked it, the double
- 1:29Speaker 3: team was set right there in the alley where he was.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Was double team, one guy out. Smile Monday didn't get
- 1:36Speaker 3: over the top. to make the play. He didn't make
- 1:40Speaker 3: the play. And then all of a sudden, it was
- 1:42Speaker 3: history after that. Not that this guy has been a
- 1:46Speaker 3: Pro Bowl punt returner and kick returner before.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Come on, man.
- 1:50Speaker 3: You just got to be mindful of these type of situations,
- 1:53Speaker 3: especially when they took it and taken advantage of it
- 1:56Speaker 3: in the first play of the game.
- 1:57Speaker 1: So I'm at a loss of words, man. Loss of words.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Your coach, your head coach stands at the podium after
- 2:05Speaker 2: the game and he says, It's my fault. I made
- 2:09Speaker 2: the wrong call. You think? Do you think sometimes Nick
- 2:14Speaker 2: has too much of a hand in certain situations?
- 2:18Speaker 3: Well, it shouldn't be too much of a hand in
- 2:20Speaker 3: certain situations. He's the CEO coach. He's not really a
- 2:23Speaker 3: guy that's going to call the offense, or he shouldn't.
- 2:26Speaker 3: He's not really a guy that should call the defense,
- 2:28Speaker 3: and he shouldn't. He's not really a guy that should
- 2:30Speaker 3: be calling the special teams.
- 2:33Speaker 2: He shouldn't.
- 2:34Speaker 3: He should advise those guys and trust that they're going
- 2:36Speaker 3: to make the right decisions. He can go in and, like,
- 2:39Speaker 3: you know, maybe recommend. But, I mean, I just didn't
- 2:42Speaker 3: think at this point that, you know, that, I mean,
- 2:44Speaker 3: it just didn't make sense to me. Especially seeing what
- 2:47Speaker 3: happened in the Dallas game, you know, this last week.
- 2:53Speaker 1: It didn't make sense. But at the end of the day,
- 2:57Speaker 1: they beat us.
- 2:58Speaker 3: And it's the second week in a row that we
- 3:01Speaker 3: get beat the last play.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Of our opponent.
- 3:05Speaker 3: The last play of our opponent, they'd beaten us for
- 3:08Speaker 3: the last two weeks.
- 3:09Speaker 1: It's getting tough, man. It's getting tough.
- 3:11Speaker 3: But I'll tell you this. He can still be my coach.
- 3:14Speaker 3: He's my guy. But he's got to do better, man.
- 3:17Speaker 3: He's got to do better. He's still your guy.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Yeah, he has to be, man. He has to be.
- 3:24Speaker 1: You see these? You see these? These green-colored glasses? You told.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Now, wait a minute. Now, you've told me couple of
- 3:34Speaker 2: times over the last couple of weeks that you are
- 3:36Speaker 2: no longer wearing the rose-colored glasses. Who put something in
- 3:40Speaker 2: your Kool-Aid to make you turn back the other way?
- 3:43Speaker 1: Well, I mean, it wasn't last night. Let me put
- 3:46Speaker 1: it like this. Let me make it very, very clear.
- 3:47Speaker 1: It wasn't last night.
- 3:49Speaker 3: I mean, I must admit, I was MFing and everything, bro.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I was.
- 3:53Speaker 3: But when I watched the film, I watched the film,
- 3:57Speaker 3: and I saw some things that made me feel pretty
- 4:00Speaker 3: good about the situation going forward. And, you know, the
- 4:03Speaker 3: way the offensive line, and they gave Jalen ample opportunity
- 4:06Speaker 3: to push the ball down the field. They blocked well.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Say what you want to say. You can't look at
- 4:11Speaker 3: the little engine that could and say he can't. I mean,
- 4:15Speaker 3: he absolutely balled. Willie Lampkin played a great game yesterday. Oh,
- 4:22Speaker 3: and oh, by the way, the starting center, I forget
- 4:24Speaker 3: even his name. I mean, from out of nowhere, he
- 4:27Speaker 3: played well.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Jake Majors. Yeah.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Yeah, Jake Majors from Texas. He played well. He played well. Sting,
- 4:37Speaker 1: he needs to work on it a little bit. And
- 4:41Speaker 1: I don't understand.
- 4:42Speaker 3: It's a contract year for him, D-Gun. It's a contract year.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Why is it that he's not trying to ball and
- 4:48Speaker 3: go all out?
- 4:49Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 4:49Speaker 3: I mean, he played better last year than the year before.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Right now, he's not playing well at all. And we
- 4:55Speaker 3: got to look at Bell. Bell, he played a lot
- 4:59Speaker 3: better this last game. Although there were some mistakes that
- 5:02Speaker 3: were made, and those were just, like, learning mistakes that
- 5:06Speaker 3: come with repetition and experience, he actually played pretty good.
- 5:12Speaker 3: But they gave Jalen an opportunity to push the ball
- 5:14Speaker 3: down the field. Now, Jalen has to take advantage of
- 5:17Speaker 3: what he's given, too, also. They're going to continue to
- 5:19Speaker 3: blitz him. And as long as he doesn't pick it up,
- 5:23Speaker 3: they're going to make it their point to blitz him.
- 5:25Speaker 3: So he's got to get him out of.
- 5:26Speaker 1: It, man.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Does it surprise you at this stage of his career
- 5:32Speaker 2: that Jalen still seems to have difficulty picking up blitzes?
- 5:38Speaker 1: It does. It does.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Because, number one, when I look at it, the teams
- 5:43Speaker 3: are running the same blitz.
- 5:44Speaker 1: They're overloading one side. They're putting five blitzes on one side.
- 5:48Speaker 3: And whether they drop out or not, they're still going
- 5:51Speaker 3: to have more blitzes than they are blockers. You know,
- 5:56Speaker 3: even if you shift the line over, that's only three blockers.
- 5:59Speaker 3: You've got a center guard and a tackle. And if
- 6:01Speaker 3: they bring four, there's still one more blitzer. And when
- 6:05Speaker 3: I watched it, I mean, I did see one play where,
- 6:09Speaker 3: you know, they could have taken advantage of it.
- 6:10Speaker 1: They will stop teams from blitzing.
- 6:12Speaker 3: That's that long pass that they went through the wicks
- 6:15Speaker 3: when he got hit and he was throwing it up
- 6:16Speaker 3: on the blitz. That's how you get teams out of blitzing.
- 6:19Speaker 3: You make them pay with big plays. And they were
- 6:21Speaker 3: about this close. From catching it, and that would have
- 6:25Speaker 3: been a touchdown. I mean, he had that much more time.
- 6:28Speaker 3: That would have been a touchdown to Wicks. But that's
- 6:30Speaker 3: how you get them out of blitzing. You got to
- 6:32Speaker 3: make them pay. And they almost made them pay that,
- 6:34Speaker 3: and they almost had an opportunity to do it. I'm
- 6:36Speaker 3: just looking for Jalen also to understand, all right, you
- 6:38Speaker 3: see all the people coming over there? Don't let it
- 6:40Speaker 3: shock you. If you see them line up over there,
- 6:43Speaker 3: it's a good opportunity.
- 6:44Speaker 1: That they're coming. And sometimes you got to fade over
- 6:47Speaker 1: a little bit. You know what I'm saying?
- 6:48Speaker 3: If they're coming from the right, fade over to the
- 6:50Speaker 3: left a little bit, give yourself a little bit more time.
- 6:53Speaker 3: But I still don't see the side adjustment that the
- 6:55Speaker 3: offensive coordinator can give him that will help him out.
- 6:59Speaker 3: And what I mean by side adjustments, when a receiver's
- 7:01Speaker 3: out there and when he looks inside, there may be
- 7:04Speaker 3: one guy that he's responsible for, the receiver looks at
- 7:08Speaker 3: and is responsible for.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Now, if he sees him just a player in blitz,
- 7:12Speaker 1: that means he's.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Got to side adjust and make himself available to the quarterback,
- 7:16Speaker 3: whether that's a slant, whether it's a stop play, Something
- 7:19Speaker 3: has to be built into this offense that they can
- 7:23Speaker 3: use and side adjust so they can stop them from
- 7:25Speaker 3: blitzing like that. If you make them pay, they'll stop
- 7:27Speaker 3: doing it. But at this point, I keep blitzing. I
- 7:30Speaker 3: blitz the hell out of them because he's not picking
- 7:32Speaker 3: it up and the team's not picking it up. That
- 7:34Speaker 3: one time that they did get it out there and
- 7:36Speaker 3: they almost made them pay, that gave them a little
- 7:38Speaker 3: bit of earnest like, all right, we better slow down
- 7:40Speaker 3: a little bit. But, I mean, they need to do
- 7:43Speaker 3: more than just one time. I mean, you do it
- 7:45Speaker 3: one time, okay, whatever. You know what I'm saying? All right,
- 7:48Speaker 3: they just got lucky that time. But if you continue
- 7:51Speaker 3: to beat them in the blitz, they'll stop blitzing.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Let's go back inside the offensive line for a moment,
- 7:59Speaker 2: if you will. Jalen threw 40 passes in this game.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Was only sacked one time. And there were many times
- 8:06Speaker 2: in this game where he had time to stand in
- 8:08Speaker 2: the pocket and look down the field. What impressed you
- 8:11Speaker 2: most about the makeshift offensive line? I mean, a center.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Nobody knew his name, basically. a 5'11 left guard, you know,
- 8:20Speaker 2: and a rookie who got his first full game of experience. Now,
- 8:24Speaker 2: Jacksonville has a pretty good defensive front, and that offensive
- 8:29Speaker 2: line kept some of the pressure off Jalen, especially at
- 8:33Speaker 2: crucial times of a game. What really impressed you most,
- 8:37Speaker 2: stood out most to you about the way that offensive
- 8:39Speaker 2: line came together?
- 8:42Speaker 1: Willie Lampkin, 101, Eric Armstead, a lot of the game.
- 8:47Speaker 3: And won, and he won. He jacked him up a
- 8:51Speaker 3: bunch of times, man. Held him up in the pass,
- 8:55Speaker 3: you know, and still made him in the run. I'm
- 8:58Speaker 3: telling you, man, he showed everybody that he can play
- 9:01Speaker 3: this game, man. I mean, he looked great out there.
- 9:04Speaker 3: I mean, he got his hands inside. He stopped the
- 9:07Speaker 3: bull rush. He stopped the counter moves when he was free, and,
- 9:12Speaker 3: you know, and he sat back, and once he saw
- 9:13Speaker 3: his blitz responsibility leave, He ran over and started, you know,
- 9:17Speaker 3: hitting those defenders on his tackle. He went out there
- 9:19Speaker 3: and tried to tattoo their ribs. All those things you
- 9:22Speaker 3: love for a player.
- 9:23Speaker 1: To do, he did.
- 9:25Speaker 3: When you look at Jake Majors, he was a little
- 9:27Speaker 3: shaky with the snapping, which, you know, really hurt Jalen
- 9:30Speaker 3: a little bit because it had to take his eyes
- 9:32Speaker 3: off going down the field. That really hurt, especially when
- 9:35Speaker 3: he were on the goal line and he snapped back
- 9:37Speaker 3: there and Jalen threw it over their head and they
- 9:39Speaker 3: could almost call it intentional grounding, but it went over
- 9:42Speaker 3: the receiver's head. That could have been a real crucial play.
- 9:46Speaker 3: And hopefully we have our starter back in Kendall. But
- 9:51Speaker 3: I mean, for the most part, he just played hard, man,
- 9:54Speaker 3: and just went all out.
- 9:57Speaker 1: He just went all out. And that's what I needed.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I needed to see the fight in him.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Dogs.
- 10:00Speaker 1: And they fought.
- 10:01Speaker 3: They really fought their butt off for the entirety of
- 10:03Speaker 3: the game. Steen needs a little work, man. He's got
- 10:07Speaker 3: to play a little bit harder. And if this is
- 10:10Speaker 3: the match that he can give, then, you know, it's
- 10:13Speaker 3: going to be hard for him to stay here.
- 10:15Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
- 10:15Speaker 3: This is a contract here. He should be playing a
- 10:17Speaker 3: lot better than he's playing right now. And Bell, for
- 10:20Speaker 3: the most part, Bell fought, man. He was honorable this time.
- 10:24Speaker 3: He was finishing plays. He saw what those other guys
- 10:26Speaker 3: were doing and started doing the same thing. I think
- 10:28Speaker 3: he played well enough that we should have won the game, man. And,
- 10:31Speaker 3: of course, Jordan balled out. So, you know, to have
- 10:34Speaker 3: a patchwork offensive line and to only give up one sack,
- 10:38Speaker 3: they did a phenomenal job of protecting Jalen for the
- 10:40Speaker 3: most part. And against the run, I mean, it was
- 10:44Speaker 3: tough against the run. You know, that was the number
- 10:46Speaker 3: two or number three. You see, the number one and
- 10:48Speaker 3: number three, I'm sorry, the number two or the number
- 10:51Speaker 3: three defensive against the run in the entire NFL?
- 10:54Speaker 1: Number two, yeah.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Yeah, so, I mean, they tried to, but at the
- 11:00Speaker 3: end of the day, those guys up front were having it. But,
- 11:03Speaker 3: I mean, to have a... Okay, I was going to
- 11:05Speaker 3: say a third team or fourth. It was the fourth
- 11:07Speaker 3: team running back towards the end with Pierce. The fourth
- 11:12Speaker 3: team running back trying to run a rock, you're just
- 11:14Speaker 3: not going to have that consistency, man.
- 11:15Speaker 2: And.
- 11:16Speaker 1: You know, it showed. It showed its head.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Now, if we'd have had Saquon in there, and I
- 11:20Speaker 3: hope there's an opportunity he can play this next week,
- 11:23Speaker 3: I think things would have been a lot better. I
- 11:24Speaker 3: think this game would have probably been a lot more
- 11:28Speaker 3: of a fight and us up more on Jacksonville.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Everything in life comes down to choice, doesn't it? Whether
- 11:35Speaker 4: it's choosing the team you root for, who you listen to,
- 11:39Speaker 4: or how you power your home, you deserve the freedom
- 11:41Speaker 4: to choose your own adventure, and that goes for your
- 11:44Speaker 4: power bill too. Right now across the U.S., Americans have
- 11:47Speaker 4: the potential to harness limitless, clean, affordable energy. We could
- 11:51Speaker 4: be powering our hospitals, our schools, our farms, and so
- 11:54Speaker 4: much more. In some places, this abundant local power is
- 11:58Speaker 4: already helping lower utility bills and creating jobs. But depending
- 12:02Speaker 4: on where you live, you may not have the option
- 12:05Speaker 4: to choose Limitless Energy.
- 12:06Speaker 2: For your household.
- 12:07Speaker 4: That has to change. We should all get to choose
- 12:10Speaker 4: the energy we pay for. Cheaper, cleaner, limitless energy is
- 12:15Speaker 4: out there. Let's find more ways to use it. Head
- 12:17Speaker 4: over to energylimitless.com to learn more about your energy options.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Fall is the season where everyone gets busier. More calls,
- 12:25Speaker 4: more customers, more chances for something to slip through the cracks.
- 12:29Speaker 4: And staying ahead means having the right system, not just
- 12:32Speaker 4: working harder. That's why today's episode is brought to you
- 12:36Speaker 4: by Quo, spelled Q-U-O, the business phone system built so

- 13:10Speaker 2: What are we going to do about this running game?
- 13:12Speaker 2: The running game had 22 yards. And like you said,
- 13:16Speaker 2: Jacksonville was giving up 74 yards of the ground. But somehow, someway,
- 13:21Speaker 2: this is three straight games. They can't run the ball, man.
- 13:24Speaker 2: They can't run the football. And you have to be
- 13:27Speaker 2: able to run the football in today's football season to
- 13:30Speaker 2: keep a defense off balance, number one, and to keep
- 13:33Speaker 2: the sticks moving. Even if they had their offensive line intact, man,
- 13:37Speaker 2: they cannot run the football beat. How do you change that?
- 13:41Speaker 2: How do you get more productive in the ground game? Well,
- 13:46Speaker 2: they got to do more for what that offensive line
- 13:49Speaker 2: is built for. And I know they want to run
- 13:51Speaker 2: the zone scheme, and everybody was talking about zone scheme.
- 13:54Speaker 3: You run an outside zone, inside zone. But at this point,
- 13:57Speaker 3: I don't think it's really conducive of what our guys are.
- 14:00Speaker 3: You know, you've got big maulers. And at this point,
- 14:02Speaker 3: I think we might get Landon Dickerson back. I think
- 14:05Speaker 3: that'll make a difference. Even though people are like, oh,
- 14:08Speaker 3: we need Landon Dickerson back.
- 14:10Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
- 14:10Speaker 3: If he's healthy, a healthy Landon Dickerson can move the crowd.
- 14:14Speaker 3: So get Landon back, have that opportunity, then get Kendall back.
- 14:18Speaker 3: I think we will be able to move the ball.
- 14:20Speaker 3: We'll just have to run more gap schemes, you know,
- 14:21Speaker 3: with man schemes like, you know, power. Double team the
- 14:25Speaker 3: front side, pull the backside guard up through the line,
- 14:27Speaker 3: and just have the running back find a hole and
- 14:29Speaker 3: take it to the house. You got to, you know,
- 14:31Speaker 3: hopefully get Saquon back. Right now, we don't have enough backs.
- 14:35Speaker 3: We don't have enough backs to even fill the team
- 14:37Speaker 3: right now. I mean, Pierce is the only guy we
- 14:39Speaker 3: have available. He's the only one we got up right now. So,
- 14:43Speaker 3: we got to have something. We need to go out
- 14:45Speaker 3: and get some people. If we don't have Saquon, we
- 14:48Speaker 3: are definitely screwed, man, because we just don't have enough
- 14:50Speaker 3: to run the ball at this point. But, I mean,
- 14:53Speaker 3: I think this offensive line– with a little more help
- 14:56Speaker 3: from Saquon as far as Saquon being back, Landon Dickerson
- 15:01Speaker 3: maybe playing, I think we will be able to go
- 15:03Speaker 3: out there and fill the team that can run the ball.
- 15:06Speaker 1: You won't be able to pack the box like you have.
- 15:08Speaker 3: If Smitty comes back. All these things are tied together.
- 15:11Speaker 3: We don't have Smitty. We just got Dallas Goddard back.
- 15:14Speaker 3: He made a major impact in the first half, but
- 15:18Speaker 3: none in the second half. Things don't start coming together
- 15:22Speaker 3: once health starts becoming better for us.
- 15:24Speaker 1: You know, we don't have it right now.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Well, this team had a 14 to 10 lead at halftime.
- 15:30Speaker 2: They moved the ball well, well enough in the first
- 15:34Speaker 2: half to have a lead going into the half of Barrett.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Once again, we go to the second half. Now the offense, again,
- 15:42Speaker 2: they had 138 yards of offense at halftime. They finished
- 15:44Speaker 2: with 232 yards of offense. That means they had 94
- 15:51Speaker 2: yards of offense in the latter half. Against the Bears,
- 15:57Speaker 2: they had 62 yards of offense in the second half.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Against the Rams, 72 yards of offense. And against Jacksonville,
- 16:04Speaker 2: 94 yards of offense. They only have three points in
- 16:08Speaker 2: the second half in the last three games. When you
- 16:11Speaker 2: go to the locker room at halftime, you're making adjustments.
- 16:15Speaker 2: You huddle up with your group and you make adjustments, Barry.
- 16:19Speaker 2: What is it about this team that can't make the
- 16:21Speaker 2: necessary adjustments to play a more efficient second half of football?
- 16:27Speaker 1: I'm laughing because I don't know.
- 16:29Speaker 3: I mean, is it that we don't know how to make,
- 16:31Speaker 3: you know, adjustments in game?
- 16:34Speaker 1: I don't understand it.
- 16:35Speaker 3: You know, you go for running a ball successfully for
- 16:38Speaker 3: Saquon last week with the Rams. I mean, the week
- 16:40Speaker 3: before last. And all of a sudden, you know, Saquon's
- 16:44Speaker 3: not there. We're not going to run the ball. But
- 16:46Speaker 3: we still were able to go out there and move
- 16:48Speaker 3: the ball effectively.
- 16:49Speaker 1: In the first half.
- 16:51Speaker 3: I don't understand when the second half comes, we can't
- 16:53Speaker 3: call plays to, you know, counter their defense.
- 16:58Speaker 1: I mean, it just.
- 16:59Speaker 3: We talk about our defense being a top defense. Well,
- 17:02Speaker 3: they're starting to play like that. You know, you saw
- 17:05Speaker 3: Jalen go out there, Jalen Carter go out there and ball.
- 17:07Speaker 1: You see those guys out there making plays.
- 17:09Speaker 3: There's only so long that they're going to be able
- 17:11Speaker 3: to do that for an entire half before the offense
- 17:15Speaker 3: is like, all right, we're going to make something happen.
- 17:18Speaker 3: I mean, they held as long as they could, man.
- 17:20Speaker 3: It was just to a point where could they hold,
- 17:22Speaker 3: you know, they should have.
- 17:23Speaker 1: But, I mean, come on now.
- 17:25Speaker 3: You know, you need some help from this offense. And
- 17:27Speaker 3: all these three and outs, three and outs. We got
- 17:29Speaker 3: to find out what works on first and second down.
- 17:33Speaker 3: We just have no production in first and second down.
- 17:36Speaker 3: We have penalties, holding calls, something like that. It just
- 17:39Speaker 3: messes us up. So if we can't have consistent three-
- 17:42Speaker 3: or four-yard play on the first down, then we go
- 17:48Speaker 3: into the second down. Now, you know, we're cooking with
- 17:50Speaker 3: hot grease. Now if we get two or three yards
- 17:53Speaker 3: that time, now we're third and management. It seems like
- 17:55Speaker 3: every time we're going, we're going third and 10, third
- 17:58Speaker 3: and 15, third and 12. Man, there's not a lot
- 18:00Speaker 3: of those plays that you can use to continue to
- 18:04Speaker 3: move the ball and continue to get production out of
- 18:07Speaker 3: your offense. That's why it's been three and out, three
- 18:08Speaker 3: and out, three and out. First down is killing us.
- 18:14Speaker 2: You know, your quarterback, he made plays of necessity, but
- 18:19Speaker 2: he missed on some things. And the biggest thing he
- 18:21Speaker 2: missed on was that play in the third quarter Jacksonville
- 18:24Speaker 2: comes with a zero blitz, and he flows one down
- 18:27Speaker 2: the left side line, and Wicks is wide open. He
- 18:31Speaker 2: missed him. Now, obviously, I give Jalen credit for one thing.
- 18:35Speaker 2: He stood in there because he knew the heat was coming,
- 18:38Speaker 2: and he stood in there, took a shot, but he
- 18:40Speaker 2: got the throw off. But in a game like that,
- 18:43Speaker 2: you have got to make that connection, man. Now, we
- 18:46Speaker 2: know Dontavion Wicks is not the fastest receiver in the world,
- 18:49Speaker 2: and I would say to him, hey, man, you're a
- 18:51Speaker 2: tall receiver. You need to lay out. First of all,
- 18:54Speaker 2: you need to lay out for that one. But secondly,
- 18:57Speaker 2: your quarterback, you got to put a better touch on
- 18:58Speaker 2: that ball, man, because that right there could have been
- 19:02Speaker 2: a decisive score of the game.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Well, that's what I'm saying. That's how you keep teams
- 19:07Speaker 3: from blitzing. That's what I was talking about. If they
- 19:09Speaker 3: would have connected on that, it would have been like,
- 19:12Speaker 3: all right, we got to stop blitzing now because they
- 19:14Speaker 3: connected on that big play. And if he'd have caught
- 19:16Speaker 3: him in stride, it would have been a touchdown. That's
- 19:19Speaker 3: how you keep a team from blitzing. You scare them
- 19:22Speaker 3: into– to not blitz you because the big play ability
- 19:24Speaker 3: that you have can, you know, that they'll be like,
- 19:27Speaker 3: all right, we're scared to blitz until we start making
- 19:29Speaker 3: those big plays. It's just not going to be good
- 19:32Speaker 3: for us. Now we beat them a third down a
- 19:34Speaker 3: couple of times. You know, at least we have some
- 19:36Speaker 3: third down productivity, this game. We were just going like, well,
- 19:40Speaker 3: I think we were.
- 19:42Speaker 1: 0-13, 0-14.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Well, at least we have 0-17 over two games. Right.
- 19:46Speaker 1: You know, so we have.
- 19:47Speaker 3: Some productivity and, and, and, on third down, we were
- 19:51Speaker 3: able to, you know, convert on third down. But those
- 19:53Speaker 3: are the things that, you know, you have to be
- 19:55Speaker 3: able to do. And I think when we do get
- 19:58Speaker 3: Smitty back and we do get, you know, guys that
- 20:00Speaker 3: can go out there and, and you know are big-time targets.
- 20:04Speaker 3: You know, I think things have changed. You know, teams
- 20:06Speaker 3: will stop listening to us. Teams will stop bringing down
- 20:09Speaker 3: the extra defender to stop the run. I think the
- 20:11Speaker 3: run game will open up. It's all incumbent upon us
- 20:14Speaker 3: getting healthy and bringing back guys that can make a
- 20:17Speaker 3: difference in those type of situations.
- 20:20Speaker 2: I look at the wide receivers as a whole, Barrett,
- 20:22Speaker 2: and this has been happening in too many games. You
- 20:25Speaker 2: have third and long situations, and these receivers are cutting
- 20:28Speaker 2: off their routes. You know, there was a one-third long
- 20:31Speaker 2: situation in the first– a third-nine situation in the fourth quarter.
- 20:35Speaker 2: And I forgot who the receiver was. It was either
- 20:38Speaker 2: Wick– I believe it was Wicks. He cuts the route
- 20:40Speaker 2: off at five yards instead of trying to get to
- 20:42Speaker 2: nine yards. And we see this happen too often. Now,
- 20:46Speaker 2: I don't understand because you practice this stuff. We've seen
- 20:50Speaker 2: Nick Ceriani practice down situational football in practices– Time and
- 20:56Speaker 2: time again.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Yet they get to a game and it's like they
- 20:59Speaker 1: lose their minds.
- 21:00Speaker 2: I don't understand. How do you not know you need
- 21:03Speaker 2: nine yards? You know where the sticks are. You need
- 21:05Speaker 2: nine yards. You cut off the route at five yards.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Who is that on? Is that on the quarterback, you know,
- 21:12Speaker 1: emphasizing to the receiver? Is it the coaches?
- 21:16Speaker 2: Is it the mechanism within the receiver's head in terms of,
- 21:20Speaker 2: I know what I need. I know what I got
- 21:21Speaker 2: to do. Somehow, some way I got to get to
- 21:23Speaker 2: that destination.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Who is that normally? That's what it is.
- 21:28Speaker 3: You got to know as a player, I need to
- 21:30Speaker 3: get a first down. So you got to take it
- 21:32Speaker 3: to the sticks. And I'm sure Jalen understands that also.
- 21:37Speaker 3: And he needs to tell them, hey, in the huddle, hey,
- 21:39Speaker 3: get the first down. If you got to come back,
- 21:42Speaker 3: make sure you push the 12 to come back to 10.
- 21:47Speaker 3: You got to make that happen. I mean, because it's
- 21:50Speaker 3: all for naught if you don't. They're trying to bank
- 21:52Speaker 3: on them making a move and getting the first down. No,
- 21:56Speaker 3: get past the sticks, come back, because that's what teams
- 21:58Speaker 3: are doing to us. They're getting the first down first
- 22:00Speaker 3: before you even think about coming to run. If you're
- 22:02Speaker 3: running an out, running an out, instead of running an
- 22:05Speaker 3: out at 10 yards or running out at 5 yards,
- 22:08Speaker 3: if the sticks say 11, go to 11 and run
- 22:11Speaker 3: the outs. You know what I'm saying? Make sure you're
- 22:13Speaker 3: getting the first down. All these are in-game things you
- 22:15Speaker 3: have to, you know, it's almost like you're in the sand.
- 22:17Speaker 3: You got to draw a play up in the sand. Hey,
- 22:20Speaker 3: get to the sticks. I can remember being in the huddle.
- 22:23Speaker 3: Randall Cunningham said, hey, Freddie, get to the sticks. I'm
- 22:26Speaker 3: going to throw it to you on the outplay. Get
- 22:28Speaker 3: to the sticks. Get the first down.
- 22:30Speaker 1: I've heard players say that. Ben Roethlisberger. Hey, hey, hey, hey.
- 22:34Speaker 3: At that point, you know, you got a high reward. Hey, man,
- 22:37Speaker 3: I got to push it all the way up on
- 22:39Speaker 3: this comeback. I got to push it up 14 to
- 22:41Speaker 3: come back at 12 so I can give you enough
- 22:44Speaker 3: for the first down. That's just heady receivers, heady quarterback
- 22:48Speaker 3: understanding what they need to do to make it happen.
- 22:51Speaker 3: I've seen it happen all the time, you know, and
- 22:54Speaker 3: that's just a part of the game. That's just a
- 22:56Speaker 3: part of being a pro. You got to play like
- 22:59Speaker 3: a pro, you know, and at times I see we
- 23:01Speaker 3: don't do that, you know, even Even, you know, I'm
- 23:04Speaker 3: going to tell you this. Before we kick the field goal,
- 23:07Speaker 3: the last run play before we kick the field goal,
- 23:10Speaker 3: and this just comes with Bell and the inexperience that
- 23:13Speaker 3: he has as a player. If you look at it,
- 23:16Speaker 3: they're going to blitz from his side, the right side.
- 23:19Speaker 3: And he has three guys lined up outside of him.
- 23:21Speaker 3: So the likelihood that that defensive end that he's on
- 23:25Speaker 3: coming straight up the field is zero. Because there's too
- 23:30Speaker 3: many people outside for him to go outside. He'll just
- 23:32Speaker 3: bump into them. He's going inside. And he was laid
- 23:37Speaker 3: off the ball, number one. Number two, he let the
- 23:39Speaker 3: guy cross his face simply because he should have took
- 23:42Speaker 3: an inside step and.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Drove hard and just drove him down and collapsed it down.
- 23:48Speaker 3: But that's just him just being young and not understanding
- 23:50Speaker 3: the situation of football. You can't let the guy cross
- 23:54Speaker 3: your face. You got to press him back, get movement.
- 23:57Speaker 3: You're 6'9, 340 pounds. Put your hat on him, man.
- 24:03Speaker 3: And that's what comes with experience. He'll learn stuff like that.
- 24:08Speaker 3: He'll remember this next time he's in that certain situation
- 24:11Speaker 3: and he'll act accordingly.
- 24:16Speaker 2: I have no problem with the way the defense played
- 24:19Speaker 2: in this game. Jacksonville was averaging 26 points a game
- 24:23Speaker 2: That defense held Jacksonville to 16 points. And Jalen Carter,
- 24:27Speaker 2: you mentioned a moment ago, Jalen Carter, that was a
- 24:30Speaker 2: man possessed in the first half. And I'm thinking, where's
- 24:33Speaker 2: this Jalen Carter been all season?
- 24:36Speaker 1: Right.
- 24:36Speaker 2: What?
- 24:36Speaker 1: That cast was gone. What?
- 24:39Speaker 3: It was a soft cast or something. But, hey, I
- 24:42Speaker 3: tell you what, Cleveland, they're starting right guard.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Man, he had a ruffle, man.
- 24:48Speaker 3: They got the win, but he went in iced up.
- 24:50Speaker 3: He had a tough game. He had a rough game, man.
- 24:53Speaker 3: I'm telling you, he was at the trainers doing whatever
- 24:55Speaker 3: he can, man, because he got an ass whooping that day.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Jalen Carter went out and just crushed him, bro.
- 25:02Speaker 3: I mean, he could do no right. Everything he did
- 25:04Speaker 3: was wrong. He beat that man up, man. He, you know,
- 25:08Speaker 3: step inside club on the outside and just come up
- 25:11Speaker 3: the field and then just be able to work around
- 25:14Speaker 3: him almost like a defensive end and knock the ball
- 25:18Speaker 3: on like that. He had a phenomenal game. And it
- 25:20Speaker 3: wasn't just in the passes and the run, too. He
- 25:23Speaker 3: just had a phenomenal game, man. And when you have
- 25:25Speaker 3: him playing at that level, we get Grenard back. Man,
- 25:30Speaker 3: it's going to be unreal. Now, I will say this.
- 25:33Speaker 3: I don't know what's going on with Hunt.
- 25:35Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know what, you know. Yeah.
- 25:38Speaker 3: That was a hurt piece there. You know, going into halftime,
- 25:40Speaker 3: last play, him jumping down for a ball and to
- 25:43Speaker 3: be hurt like that. Dang, man. That's a hurt piece, man.
- 25:47Speaker 3: I hope it's not anything too serious. But, man, he
- 25:50Speaker 3: found his stride in this game. He balled out this game,
- 25:53Speaker 3: especially in the run. He was setting the edge. He
- 25:56Speaker 3: was finishing plays. He was going up making tackles in
- 25:59Speaker 3: the interior. He had a great game. And he was
- 26:02Speaker 3: almost there a couple of times on the pass rush.
- 26:04Speaker 3: He had a couple of hurries and hits. Man, I
- 26:06Speaker 3: hope everything's going good with him. But I just haven't
- 26:08Speaker 3: heard anything from a medical staff or from the team
- 26:11Speaker 3: or anything.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 26:15Speaker 2: The defense as a whole, I thought Vic Fangio called
- 26:18Speaker 2: a good game. in terms of playing physical. You know,
- 26:23Speaker 2: Quinion Mitchell played outstanding, I thought, against their receivers. I
- 26:28Speaker 2: thought they played a little bit more press coverage than
- 26:31Speaker 2: they normally play. And Zach Bond, having Zach Bond back
- 26:34Speaker 2: was huge. I think he led the team with 11 tackles.
- 26:39Speaker 2: You know, if they can just get right, just get right.
- 26:45Speaker 1: And that's what I'm saying.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Like, how do you keep, trot jr off the field
- 26:52Speaker 3: with with 15 tackles the week before how do you
- 26:55Speaker 3: keep him off the field they make up a bogus
- 26:58Speaker 3: thing and kick him out the game come on now
- 27:01Speaker 3: that was so bogus man but at the end of
- 27:03Speaker 3: the day you know he wasn't there and that hurt
- 27:06Speaker 3: us on kickoff and it also hurt us on uh
- 27:09Speaker 3: hurt us on you know linebacker position i i think
- 27:12Speaker 3: that he would have played tit for tat with zach
- 27:15Speaker 3: bond and and really balled out man he he He
- 27:18Speaker 3: looked so good in the state's last game that this game,
- 27:22Speaker 3: I really had some high expectations from. And you could
- 27:25Speaker 3: tell from the broadcast that they maybe talked to, you know,
- 27:29Speaker 3: the defensive coordinator and said, you know, and they were
- 27:31Speaker 3: going to say, you know, a trap would have probably
- 27:33Speaker 3: started this game. You know, I mean, just from what
- 27:35Speaker 3: I hear, what I heard from them and what they
- 27:37Speaker 3: were saying, they were saying, like, you know, he was
- 27:39Speaker 3: going to be the starter going into this game.
- 27:42Speaker 1: So, I mean, that might have been a possibility.

- 30:13Speaker 2: So... Everybody's still shocked at the way they lost this game.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Your head coach stands at the podium and says, it's
- 30:21Speaker 2: my fault. It's my fault. It's my fault. It's my fault.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Does he get somewhat of a piece saying that, or
- 30:31Speaker 2: does he just add fuel to the fire by saying it?
- 30:34Speaker 3: He doesn't care about what any of us talking heads
- 30:37Speaker 3: are talking about. What he's doing is shielding his team.
- 30:42Speaker 3: And he let everybody know he let his team down. Yes,
- 30:45Speaker 3: that was a bad decision for him to make. You know,
- 30:47Speaker 3: I was not good with the decision, you know, to
- 30:50Speaker 3: not kick it out of bounds. Now, I mean, I
- 30:52Speaker 3: could look at it from a vantage point of, all right,
- 30:55Speaker 3: I pay Smile Munden to go make that play. That's
- 30:59Speaker 3: all you do. You don't play any defense. You get
- 31:03Speaker 3: paid to play special teams. That was his play to make.
- 31:07Speaker 1: It was.
- 31:09Speaker 3: They double teamed the guy that was on the outside
- 31:11Speaker 3: of him He's got to go in and make the play. And,
- 31:13Speaker 3: you know, he's the last person, you know, able to
- 31:15Speaker 3: jump out and miss the tackle. You got to be
- 31:18Speaker 3: a warrior, man. You got to go make that play.
- 31:21Speaker 3: You got to make that play. Smile Money gets paid
- 31:23Speaker 3: to do that. And, you know, just watching film, he
- 31:26Speaker 3: should have made that play.
- 31:31Speaker 2: When this game was over, three consecutive losses. Think about
- 31:36Speaker 2: it in recent years. We haven't had many opportunities to
- 31:40Speaker 2: talk about this particular group of or this Eagles team
- 31:43Speaker 2: in general under Nick Sirianni losing three consecutive games. But
- 31:47Speaker 2: as we know, consecutive losing can create dissension within the ranks.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes.
- 31:54Speaker 2: So after the game, you had your kicker say, I
- 31:59Speaker 2: did what I was told to do, okay? Then your
- 32:02Speaker 2: franchise quarterback stood at the podium multiple times and said basically, ultimately,
- 32:09Speaker 2: it was not my place. That means, hey, you're not
- 32:12Speaker 2: putting this on me. You know, the kicker and the
- 32:14Speaker 2: quarterback say, you're not putting this on me. Are you surprised?
- 32:17Speaker 2: And people are saying, oh, man, Elliott and Jalen throwing
- 32:21Speaker 2: a coach and a coaching staff under the bus. Do
- 32:23Speaker 2: you perceive it that way?
- 32:25Speaker 3: No, I thought it was them shielding the coaches and
- 32:30Speaker 3: not saying anything other than, hey, that's not my call.
- 32:35Speaker 1: You know, I'll do what I'm coached to do. You
- 32:38Speaker 1: know what I mean?
- 32:38Speaker 3: I mean, what else can you say? What is he
- 32:40Speaker 3: going to say? I mean, to me, I've seen players
- 32:45Speaker 3: just thought, man, what are you talking about? You know
- 32:48Speaker 3: what I'm saying? My coach said do this, and I
- 32:49Speaker 3: just did it. I didn't see him saying it like that.
- 32:52Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 32:55Speaker 3: So it's... I don't want this. I don't see the
- 33:01Speaker 3: tension from a divided locker room. Like, I've been in
- 33:05Speaker 3: a divided locker room. I've been on a team that
- 33:08Speaker 3: went 3-13, and you covered... my 3-13 team when I
- 33:13Speaker 3: was with the Eagles in my last year in 98.
- 33:16Speaker 1: And you could tell it was crazy.
- 33:19Speaker 3: Dana Bible, offensive coordinator, he gets replaced by Bill Musgrave,
- 33:24Speaker 3: who was actually a quarterback on the roster the year before.
- 33:29Speaker 1: He's our new offensive coordinator.
- 33:31Speaker 3: Guys are out there freestyling, doing what they do because
- 33:33Speaker 3: they know they're interviewing for 31 other teams. They don't
- 33:36Speaker 3: care about what's going on. I don't see that type
- 33:38Speaker 3: of situation in this locker room. I still see guys
- 33:41Speaker 3: are tied and they're tight. But, I mean, there's only
- 33:45Speaker 3: so much tightness that's going to go around if they
- 33:47Speaker 3: continue to lose. And I really think, you know, they're
- 33:50Speaker 3: going to stop the bleeding and they're going to slow
- 33:52Speaker 3: it down a little bit.
- 33:54Speaker 2: Does just winning one game bring unity back like that?
- 34:00Speaker 3: I don't think the unity is left. That's what I'm
- 34:04Speaker 3: trying to say. I think they're still a tight team.
- 34:07Speaker 3: I still think that there's a lot of football left
- 34:09Speaker 3: to play and that's what That's what Nick said. Nick
- 34:14Speaker 3: stated it. You know, hey, this is early in the season.
- 34:17Speaker 3: We still have a lot of football to play. And
- 34:20Speaker 3: there's still an opportunity, especially with this division, to still
- 34:24Speaker 3: make it to the playoffs because we can.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Be a division winner.
- 34:28Speaker 3: Right now, the division winner right now is 3-1-1. The Giants.
- 34:33Speaker 3: We're 2-3. Dallas is 2-3. I don't know what, you know,
- 34:38Speaker 3: commanders are, but, I mean... It doesn't matter. As long
- 34:41Speaker 3: as we take care of business, get healthy, and get
- 34:44Speaker 3: back to playing the Eagle way.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Because right now, I don't like the Eagle way.
- 34:47Speaker 3: And the Eagle way right now is terrible.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Offensively, we have no identity. We don't run the ball well.
- 35:02Speaker 2: So moving forward, what should be the coaches' rallying cry
- 35:07Speaker 2: as they now Turn the page and get ready for Carolina.
- 35:13Speaker 1: This is a young season still.
- 35:15Speaker 3: There's still an opportunity to go out there and play
- 35:18Speaker 3: some good football, but we got to stay together and
- 35:21Speaker 3: we got to play hard, period.
- 35:23Speaker 1: That's it.
- 35:23Speaker 3: Stay together, play hard. Everything else will work itself out.
- 35:29Speaker 3: That's all they need to do. All right.
- 35:31Speaker 1: It sounds simple enough.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Let's see if they can do it because Carolina offensively, man,
- 35:36Speaker 2: they can move the ball. Bryce Young is playing lights
- 35:40Speaker 2: out lately, and they've got weapons. They've got weapons in
- 35:44Speaker 2: the running game. They've got weapons in the receiving game. Now,
- 35:47Speaker 2: the defense is a little suspect, but the offense has
- 35:49Speaker 2: covered a lot of ground for that defense. So let's
- 35:52Speaker 2: see what happens. They've got Carolina, what, in their own
- 35:54Speaker 2: backyard this Sunday. So it's going to be interesting because,
- 36:00Speaker 2: as you know, if it unravels, the boo birds will
- 36:04Speaker 2: come out. And that's when the players start looking around.
- 36:07Speaker 2: defense starts looking at the offense, offense looking at the defense,
- 36:11Speaker 2: everybody looking at the coaching staff. So hopefully they can
- 36:15Speaker 2: get it together, and hopefully they hear what you're saying
- 36:18Speaker 2: and can fuse it all together and get out of
- 36:20Speaker 2: this funk that they're in right now. So we shall
- 36:24Speaker 2: wait and see. For my man, Barrett Brooks, I'm Derrick Gunn.
- 36:28Speaker 2: This has been Birds Weekly, presented by the Inside the
- 36:31Speaker 2: Birds Network. Until next time, so long, everybody.
