- 0:00Speaker 1: A condemned gangster makes a promise from the death house.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Three prominent men will pay for sending him there. When
- 0:07Speaker 1: the sound of Ralph Gorman's mouth organ begins to accompany
- 0:11Speaker 1: events that seem impossible, Lamont Cranston and Margot Lane take
- 0:15Speaker 1: up the investigation. This is The Shadow, Ghosts Can Kill,
- 0:20Speaker 1: the 69th broadcast of the series, heard over mutual on
- 0:24Speaker 1: January 15th, 1939. Bill Johnstone stars as Lamont Cranston and
- 0:30Speaker 1: the Shadow, with Agnes Moorhead as Margot Lane. Jerry Devine
- 0:35Speaker 1: wrote the script. The case moves from the courtroom and
- 0:38Speaker 1: prison to the homes and offices of the men named
- 0:41Speaker 1: in Gorman's threat. And now, we return to the original broadcast.
- 0:48Speaker 2: The End.
- 1:03Speaker 3: What evil lurks in the hearts of men?
- 1:09Speaker 4: The Shadow knows.
- 1:10Speaker 5: The Shadow knows.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Before today's adventure with the shadow begins, here's a safety
- 1:43Speaker 2: message of vital interest to every car owner. Once a
- 1:47Speaker 2: tread-worn tire starts to skid over a wet, slippery road,
- 1:50Speaker 2: trouble can happen in the wink of an eye. That's
- 1:53Speaker 2: why it's important to equip your car with a tire
- 1:56Speaker 2: that gives the quickest non-skid stop. It's the new Goodrich
- 2:00Speaker 2: Safety Silvertown with the Lifesaver Tread that sweeps wet roads
- 2:04Speaker 2: so dry you can light a match on its track.
- 2:07Speaker 2: No wonder this new kind of tire will stop you quicker,
- 2:10Speaker 2: straighter on a wet road than you've ever stopped before.
- 2:14Speaker 6: For safety's sake, get Goodrich Safety Silvertown.
- 2:27Speaker 2: The shadow, mysterious character who devotes his life to righting wrongs,
- 2:31Speaker 2: protecting the innocent, and punishing the guilty, is in reality
- 2:35Speaker 2: Lamont Cranston. wealthy young man about town, student of science,
- 2:40Speaker 2: and master of other people's minds. Using advanced methods that
- 2:44Speaker 2: may ultimately become available to all law enforcement agencies, Cranston
- 2:48Speaker 2: is known to criminals and evildoers as the Shadow. Never seen,
- 2:54Speaker 2: only heard, as haunting to superstitious minds as a ghost,
- 2:59Speaker 2: as inevitable as a guilty conscience. Cranston's friend and companion,
- 3:04Speaker 2: the lovely Margot Lane, is the only person who knows
- 3:07Speaker 2: to whom the unseen voice belongs. Today's story, Ghosts Can Kill.
- 3:16Speaker 7: The court will come to order.
- 3:22Speaker 8: Proceed, Mr. District Attorney.
- 3:25Speaker 9: Your Honor and gentlemen of the jury. You have heard
- 3:28Speaker 9: the evidence against this man, Ralph Gorman. Three eyewitnesses of
- 3:31Speaker 9: unimpeachable character saw him commit the murder. He was caught
- 3:36Speaker 9: at the scene of the murder with a gun in
- 3:37Speaker 9: his hand. It is the duty of the jury to
- 3:40Speaker 9: convict him. Ralph Gorman has been brought to court seven times.
- 3:44Speaker 8: For serious crimes.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I object.
- 3:46Speaker 10: Although I admit my client has been brought to court
- 3:48Speaker 10: in the past, he's always furnished an unbreakable alibi and
- 3:51Speaker 10: has been acquitted.
- 3:52Speaker 5: Therefore, I claim that this record is irrelevant.
- 3:55Speaker 8: Objection sustained. Very well.
- 3:57Speaker 9: That doesn't alter the state's case. In this instance, the
- 4:00Speaker 9: accused has no alibi. He is guilty of murder and
- 4:03Speaker 9: should therefore be sent to the chair.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Order in the court.
- 4:08Speaker 11: I think the question before the jury is a clean-cut issue.
- 4:13Speaker 11: The defendant, Ralph Gorman, committed a peculiarly cold-blooded murder.
- 4:18Speaker 8: There are no halfway measures. He is either guilty or
- 4:21Speaker 8: not guilty.
- 4:22Speaker 11: I therefore instruct the jury to return a verdict of
- 4:25Speaker 11: acquittal or first-degree murder. The jury will retire to consider
- 4:30Speaker 11: the verdict.
- 4:39Speaker 6: The prisoner will cease his disturbance at once.
- 4:41Speaker 3: What's the matter? Don't you like my music?
- 4:44Speaker 8: This is a court of law, Gorman.
- 4:46Speaker 11: While you are awaiting the verdict of the jury, you
- 4:48Speaker 11: will please conduct yourself in a more secretive manner.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Well, Margo, I've seen many murder trials in my time.
- 4:58Speaker 4: But I've never seen one where the accused man played
- 5:00Speaker 4: on a mouth organ.
- 5:01Speaker 12: while waiting for the jury to send him to the chair.
- 5:03Speaker 13: Lamont, isn't Gorman one of the toughest gangsters alive?
- 5:07Speaker 4: Yes. In my estimation, Ralph Gorman is public enemy number one, Margot.
- 5:11Speaker 13: Yet he's never been caught and sent to prison, Lamont.
- 5:13Speaker 13: You heard that in the testimony.
- 5:14Speaker 12: He's been caught often enough. They've never been able to
- 5:17Speaker 12: convict him.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Because he's always been able to furnish an absolutely airtight alibi.
- 5:21Speaker 4: This time, for some unexplainable reason, he has no alibi.
- 5:26Speaker 12: So if there's any justice... He should be put away
- 5:29Speaker 12: for good.
- 5:30Speaker 13: Here comes the jury back in again. It certainly didn't
- 5:32Speaker 13: take long to come to a decision.
- 5:34Speaker 12: After the evidence they heard, they should.
- 5:38Speaker 6: Court will come to order.
- 5:40Speaker 8: Gentlemen of the jury, have you reached a verdict?
- 5:43Speaker 3: We have, Your Honor.
- 5:45Speaker 5: We find the accused, Ralph Gorman, guilty of murder in
- 5:48Speaker 5: the first degree.
- 5:51Speaker 3: The court will come to order.
- 5:53Speaker 8: The prisoner will stand. Ralph Gorman.
- 5:58Speaker 11: You have been proved a menace to society, and society
- 6:01Speaker 11: has passed judgment upon you. You have been found guilty
- 6:05Speaker 11: of willful, deliberate murder in the first degree.
- 6:09Speaker 8: Have you anything to say before a sentence.
- 6:11Speaker 14: Is pronounced upon you?
- 6:12Speaker 6: Yeah, I got something to say.
- 6:14Speaker 8: Very well.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Be brief.
- 6:16Speaker 6: Society passed judgment on me, huh?
- 6:19Speaker 15: Okay, then if you're going to kill me.
- 6:21Speaker 5: I'm going to come back from the grave and get
- 6:23Speaker 5: even with society.
- 6:24Speaker 8: Empty threats will avail you nothing, Gorman.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Ah, you don't believe I can do it, huh?
- 6:29Speaker 5: All right, I'll even tell you who I'm going to get.
- 6:32Speaker 3: That will do. I'm not going.
- 6:33Speaker 10: First, I'm going to get that big financier, Oscar Borden,
- 6:36Speaker 10: that's always giving away money.
- 6:38Speaker 5: I guess Borden's what you'd call a pillar of society,
- 6:40Speaker 5: ain't he?
- 6:41Speaker 8: Stop, Gordon.
- 6:41Speaker 10: Then just for fun, I'll kill that young guy, Frank Collins,
- 6:45Speaker 10: that just got engaged.
- 6:46Speaker 6: To that social register dame.
- 6:48Speaker 5: I'll come back after death and get both of them.
- 6:50Speaker 5: Collins and Borden. Yeah, you don't think I can do it, huh?
- 6:54Speaker 5: But I can.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Yes, I can.
- 6:56Speaker 6: Quiet, quiet, and go on.
- 6:58Speaker 11: South Gorman, I hereby sentence you to be taken to
- 7:03Speaker 11: the state prison.
- 7:04Speaker 8: And to there be executed... in a manner provided by law.
- 7:09Speaker 8: And may God have mercy on your soul.
- 7:19Speaker 6: Hey, what's going on here?
- 7:20Speaker 5: No, I don't think this is Carnegie Hall. It's the
- 7:23Speaker 5: death house. And you guys are in it just like me.
- 7:45Speaker 11: Stop it!
- 7:46Speaker 3: Stop it, you guys! Are you allowed to get solitary?
- 7:50Speaker 15: Carmen, you've only been allowed to keep your mouth open
- 7:52Speaker 15: as a special favor. If you're going to make trouble,
- 7:55Speaker 15: I'll have to take it away from you.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Have a heart, will you? That's all the fun I get.
- 7:59Speaker 13: Fun? He's driving us nuts!
- 8:00Speaker 5: Oh, why do you care, buddy?
- 8:03Speaker 8: They're burning me tonight!
- 8:04Speaker 4: Tomorrow it'll be quiet around here!
- 8:07Speaker 3: Quiet as the grave! Listen, Carmen, you'd better keep quiet.
- 8:10Speaker 14: The warden will be here in a minute.
- 8:11Speaker 5: The warden!
- 8:12Speaker 10: What do I care for the warden? He can't do
- 8:14Speaker 10: any more than give me the hot seat, and he's
- 8:15Speaker 10: doing that anyhow.
- 8:16Speaker 14: Here comes the warden now.
- 8:18Speaker 8: What's all the disturbance in here, Gar? Hey, it's Gar,
- 8:20Speaker 8: my warden.
- 8:20Speaker 6: Hey, did you hear from the governor, warden?
- 8:23Speaker 8: Yes. I'm afraid I've got bad news for you, Long.
- 8:27Speaker 8: Governor Roberts has refused to do anything about your case.
- 8:30Speaker 14: They're going to burn me tonight, huh?
- 8:32Speaker 8: I'm afraid so.
- 8:36Speaker 6: Looks like society put the finger on me.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Just like the judge said.
- 8:41Speaker 13: Well, okay.
- 8:42Speaker 3: I warned him.
- 8:43Speaker 10: Like I said in court, within a week, the millionaire
- 8:46Speaker 10: Oscar Borden and Frank Collins.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Are going to be dead.
- 8:48Speaker 6: Don't talk like that, Dorman.
- 8:49Speaker 3: You'll see.
- 8:50Speaker 5: And I think I'll get Governor Roberts, too, while I'm
- 8:52Speaker 5: about it. That makes a nice trio, don't you think?
- 8:56Speaker 5: Oscar Borden, Frank Collins, and Governor Roberts. I'm going to
- 8:59Speaker 5: come back from the grave.
- 9:00Speaker 3: And kill them.
- 9:01Speaker 6: All three of them, yeah.
- 9:03Speaker 5: Society passed judgment on me, huh? Okay, I ain't kicking.
- 9:06Speaker 3: We'll see who laughs last.
- 9:07Speaker 6: Making stupid threats won't do you any good, Gorman.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Stupid, huh?
- 9:10Speaker 10: Listen, in a week, those guys are all going to
- 9:13Speaker 10: be dead.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Lots deader than me. Come along, Garfield.
- 9:15Speaker 2: You better warn them.
- 9:17Speaker 10: Tell them the time is up when they hear me
- 9:19Speaker 10: playing on my mouth organ like this.
- 9:33Speaker 6: Hey, read all about it.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Ralph Goleman electrocuted.
- 9:37Speaker 5: Ralph Goleman threatened the life.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Of Oscar Morton.
- 9:40Speaker 5: Frank Collins and Governor.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Roberts before he dies. Goleman executed.
- 9:45Speaker 10: Hey, read all about it.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Is there anything else.
- 9:55Speaker 14: You want me to do tonight, Mr.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Borden?
- 9:57Speaker 8: Before you go, door the curtains... and turn off the
- 10:00Speaker 8: other headlights, Taylor.
- 10:01Speaker 5: Yes.
- 10:01Speaker 8: I'm going to stay here in my study for a while.
- 10:03Speaker 8: It's quiet. There's some things I want to look over.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Yes, Mr.
- 10:06Speaker 15: Borden.
- 10:06Speaker 14: You won't be disturbed, sir. I think everyone else has
- 10:09Speaker 14: gone to bed.
- 10:09Speaker 8: Is the newspaper here? I haven't had a chance to
- 10:12Speaker 8: look at one all day.
- 10:12Speaker 6: Right on your desk, sir.
- 10:14Speaker 8: Oh, yes. Well, good night, Taylor.
- 10:16Speaker 6: Good night, Mr.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Borden.
- 10:17Speaker 8: Well, I'll glance at the headlines before getting down to work.
- 10:21Speaker 16: Let's see. Rebels pushing the province... Merging relief agencies. Gangster
- 10:28Speaker 16: executed in the great incident. Medic seen in the death
- 10:32Speaker 16: house last night. Ralph Gorman sentenced to come back after
- 10:34Speaker 16: death and murder. The philanthropist, Oscar Borden, Frank Collins, millionaire sportsman,
- 10:39Speaker 16: and Governor Roberts.
- 10:40Speaker 8: Now, let's see.
- 10:42Speaker 16: On the way to the chair, Gorman warned his intended
- 10:44Speaker 16: victims that they would know of his presence.
- 10:45Speaker 8: By hearing him play a mouth organ. These were his
- 10:47Speaker 8: last words after which he was electrocuted.
- 10:49Speaker 16: From his picture here, I'd say he was of rather
- 10:51Speaker 16: low mentality.
- 10:52Speaker 8: Mouth organ, now that's a bizarre note. Oh, I wonder.
- 10:58Speaker 8: Wait a moment. I can hear a mouth organ now. No, no,
- 11:02Speaker 8: it must be my imagination. That's odd. I... I could
- 11:08Speaker 8: swear I hear it again. Seems to come from the
- 11:10Speaker 8: other room.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Who opened that door?
- 11:13Speaker 8: Why, you're... you're out common.
- 11:16Speaker 3: You see me, Mr. Borden?
- 11:18Speaker 8: This is impossible.
- 11:19Speaker 5: I've come back from the dead to keep my promise
- 11:21Speaker 5: to society.
- 11:22Speaker 3: You're mad. Ghosts ain't never mad, Mr.
- 11:25Speaker 8: Borden.
- 11:25Speaker 5: Ghosts?
- 11:26Speaker 3: Preposterous. We'll see about this. Don't touch that bell, because
- 11:28Speaker 3: it ain't going to do you no good. Well, that's
- 11:33Speaker 3: one of them.
- 11:34Speaker 8: Two more to go.
- 11:49Speaker 13: Well, Lamar, as long as you just seem to be
- 11:50Speaker 13: walking me around with two shameless men, you might at
- 11:52Speaker 13: least answer my question. What do you think of those threats?
- 11:55Speaker 8: Threats?
- 11:56Speaker 12: What threats, Margo?
- 11:58Speaker 13: The threats made by Ralph Gorman last night before he
- 12:00Speaker 13: was executed.
- 12:01Speaker 12: Oh, I wouldn't give them a second thought.
- 12:03Speaker 4: Six-year-old child knows it's impossible to come back from the
- 12:05Speaker 4: dead and murder people.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Yes, I hear it, too.
- 12:13Speaker 8: Boy, give me a paper.
- 12:14Speaker 12: Keep the change, son.
- 12:15Speaker 6: Oh, thank you, sir.
- 12:16Speaker 8: Taxi!
- 12:17Speaker 6: Where are you going, Lamont?
- 12:19Speaker 4: I think this will bear a little investigating. I'll see
- 12:21Speaker 4: you later, Margo. I'm going to drop in on the
- 12:22Speaker 4: scene of the crime. Our friend Commissioner Weston should be there.
- 12:32Speaker 15: Oh, Cardona, see who that is. Whoever it is, don't
- 12:35Speaker 15: let him in this study, Mr. Bordens, until I get
- 12:37Speaker 15: to questioning these people.
- 12:38Speaker 8: Okay, Commissioner. Mr. Brown. Mr. Lamont Cranston, sir.
- 12:43Speaker 6: He says you know him.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Oh, yes, I know him.
- 12:46Speaker 8: Tell him.
- 12:47Speaker 15: Oh, wait a minute. He tries to be an amateur criminologist.
- 12:51Speaker 15: Let him come in. I'll show him how the police
- 12:54Speaker 15: department really works.
- 12:55Speaker 8: Yes, sir.
- 12:57Speaker 14: All right, you can come in, Mr.
- 12:58Speaker 8: Cranston. Thank you. Ah, Commissioner Weston. How do you do?
- 13:01Speaker 12: I just happened to be passing by the Borden house,
- 13:03Speaker 12: and I thought you might be here.
- 13:05Speaker 15: Well, Cranston, you ought to test some of your amateur
- 13:08Speaker 15: theories on crime, I suppose.
- 13:10Speaker 12: Always willing to try, Commissioner?
- 13:11Speaker 8: Well, you're liable to.
- 13:12Speaker 6: Beat your brains out over this one.
- 13:14Speaker 15: About three hours ago, Oscar Borden was found at his
- 13:16Speaker 15: desk here with a nice round bullet hole in his
- 13:19Speaker 15: head and not a clue.
- 13:21Speaker 8: How distressing.
- 13:22Speaker 12: Not a single clue, Commissioner?
- 13:24Speaker 6: Well, we have two clues, but they don't make sense.
- 13:27Speaker 4: Perhaps they don't make sense to the professional detective, but
- 13:31Speaker 4: an amateur on the intellectual side of crime might be
- 13:34Speaker 4: able to help you out, Commissioner.
- 13:36Speaker 12: What were the clues?
- 13:37Speaker 15: Well, first I asked the cop on the beat if
- 13:39Speaker 15: he'd seen any known crooks hanging.
- 13:41Speaker 8: Around the building tonight. And?
- 13:42Speaker 15: And the dumb guy told me he hadn't seen any,
- 13:44Speaker 15: except at one time during the afternoon he thought he
- 13:47Speaker 15: got a glimpse of Ralph Gorman. And Ralph Gorman is
- 13:50Speaker 15: known to have threatened us to board him.
- 13:51Speaker 8: I see.
- 13:53Speaker 14: And the other clue, Commissioner?
- 13:54Speaker 15: The other clue was even slimmer. One of the maids
- 13:56Speaker 15: says she heard a mouth organ being played in Mr.
- 13:58Speaker 15: Borden's study about the time the murder must have been committed.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Why, it all hinges together perfectly, Commissioner, don't you see?
- 14:04Speaker 4: Ralph Gorman has threatened Oscar Borden. He plays the mouth organ,
- 14:07Speaker 4: and he's been seen hanging around the house. Why, he's
- 14:10Speaker 4: your murderer.
- 14:10Speaker 15: Very pretty theory, Cranston. The only hitch is that Ralph
- 14:13Speaker 15: Gorman was put to death last night at 11 o'clock
- 14:16Speaker 15: in the electric chair at State Prison.
- 14:18Speaker 12: He was.
- 14:18Speaker 15: Yeah, you should read the papers. You see, as an
- 14:20Speaker 15: amateur criminologist, you're not so hot after.
- 14:23Speaker 8: All, Cranston.
- 14:24Speaker 12: Well, have you solved Oscar Borden's murder?
- 14:27Speaker 8: Oh, not yet.
- 14:28Speaker 12: Well, you're no better than I am, then.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Commissioner Weston, if I were you, I'd put a guard
- 14:34Speaker 4: of large, solid policemen around anyone Ralph Gorman might have
- 14:38Speaker 4: had a.
- 14:38Speaker 12: Motive to kill.
- 14:39Speaker 8: Oh, yeah?
- 14:40Speaker 3: And then what?
- 14:41Speaker 10: Then.
- 14:42Speaker 12: I'd look for the ghost of Ralph Gorman.
- 14:45Speaker 15: It's lucky you're not, police commissioner.
- 14:46Speaker 7: Now, you'd better get out of here, Cranston. I've got
- 14:48Speaker 7: important work to do.
- 14:59Speaker 2: While we're waiting for the second act to begin, here's
- 15:02Speaker 2: a thought I'd like to leave with you. There would
- 15:04Speaker 2: be far less wrongdoing in this world if those tempted
- 15:07Speaker 2: would heed the shadow's familiar slogan, crime does not pay. Yes,
- 15:12Speaker 2: And there will be fewer accidents on our highways if
- 15:15Speaker 2: each and every motorist obeyed traffic laws.
- 15:18Speaker 14: The shadow knows.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Don't try to pass a car on a curve. Don't
- 15:25Speaker 4: pass a streetcar that has come to a stop. A
- 15:28Speaker 4: few seconds lost is better than a lifetime of regret.
- 15:34Speaker 4: Play safe.
- 15:36Speaker 3: It pays.
- 15:38Speaker 2: And here's another motoring don't that every car owner should obey.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Don't gamble on tires. Don't risk life and limb from
- 15:45Speaker 2: skid and blowout when you can get life-saving protection from
- 15:49Speaker 2: these two dangers.
- 15:50Speaker 3: At no extra cost.
- 15:52Speaker 2: The tire for your family's safety is the new Goodrich
- 15:55Speaker 2: Silvertown with the Lifesaver Tread.
- 15:58Speaker 6: Here's how it works.
- 16:00Speaker 2: The spiral bars of this new tread act just like
- 16:03Speaker 2: your windshield wiper.
- 16:04Speaker 6: They sweep the water right and left, force it out
- 16:07Speaker 6: through deep, drainage grooves.
- 16:09Speaker 2: In fact, this new tread sweeps wet roads so dry
- 16:12Speaker 2: you could actually light a match on its track. But
- 16:15Speaker 2: that isn't all the freedom from driving jitters that Silvertown
- 16:18Speaker 2: gives you. Every tire has the famous golden fly, your
- 16:22Speaker 2: constant protection against that eternal fear, blowout.
- 16:26Speaker 14: For the quickest non-skid stops you've.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Ever had, for real blowout protection, equip your car with
- 16:32Speaker 2: Goodrich Safety Silvertown.
- 16:34Speaker 6: That's the way to play safe.
- 16:46Speaker 14: Hello.
- 16:47Speaker 12: Hello.
- 16:48Speaker 6: Oh, I thought we were cut off, darling, but now
- 16:50Speaker 6: I tell you, I'm all right.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Oh, but Frank, I'm so worried.
- 16:52Speaker 13: If only I were in town, so.
- 16:54Speaker 3: I could be with you.
- 16:55Speaker 6: But what is there to worry about, darling?
- 16:56Speaker 13: Why, those threats that awful man Gorman made against you.
- 16:59Speaker 6: Oh, Dad, that was just nonsense. I never even knew him,
- 17:02Speaker 6: besides he's dead.
- 17:03Speaker 13: Yes, but Oscar Borden was threatened, too.
- 17:05Speaker 6: And he's dead.
- 17:06Speaker 14: Now, Ruth, darling, please stop worrying for my sake. Nothing's
- 17:09Speaker 14: going to happen to me.
- 17:10Speaker 6: I'm in my own apartment, and I have no intention
- 17:12Speaker 6: of going out. So nothing can happen.
- 17:14Speaker 14: Now, you go to sleep and get your beauty rest.
- 17:16Speaker 6: You know, you've got to look your prettiest for our wedding, Susie.
- 17:19Speaker 5: Oh, all right, dearest.
- 17:20Speaker 13: At least I'll be with you by tomorrow. I'll be
- 17:23Speaker 13: down on the 11 o'clock train in the morning.
- 17:25Speaker 6: Oh, that's wonderful.
- 17:26Speaker 14: And I'll meet you at the station.
- 17:27Speaker 6: Good night, darling.
- 17:28Speaker 5: Good night.
- 17:29Speaker 3: Poor Ruth.
- 17:30Speaker 13: I don't know why.
- 17:31Speaker 14: Women get so nervous about.
- 17:33Speaker 6: I wonder who that could be.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Hello?
- 17:37Speaker 8: Is this Frank Collins?
- 17:39Speaker 6: Yes, who's this?
- 17:40Speaker 8: This is the Shadow.
- 17:42Speaker 6: Oh, the Shadow. If I've heard of you, what do
- 17:45Speaker 6: you want?
- 17:46Speaker 8: I want to warn you, Collins.
- 17:48Speaker 4: Warn you against a death.
- 17:50Speaker 6: Whose death?
- 17:51Speaker 8: Yours.
- 17:52Speaker 3: Then why should you be warning me?
- 17:54Speaker 4: Because if you're not very careful, you'll meet the same
- 17:56Speaker 4: fate as Oscar Borden.
- 17:57Speaker 14: And for the same reason.
- 17:58Speaker 5: Oh, nonsense.
- 17:59Speaker 4: Furthermore, I would suggest that if you value your life...
- 18:02Speaker 4: You will apply without delay for police protection.
- 18:04Speaker 6: Look, I don't know who you are, Shadow, or what
- 18:06Speaker 6: your game is. But I'm not afraid of you or
- 18:08Speaker 6: anybody else.
- 18:09Speaker 12: Have it your own way, Mr.
- 18:11Speaker 8: Collins.
- 18:12Speaker 4: Have it your own way.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Wait a minute.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Wait, listen.
- 18:17Speaker 8: Hmm.
- 18:18Speaker 6: He hung up. I wonder what that was all about.
- 18:22Speaker 6: He certainly wasn't a very cheerful person to talk to.
- 18:24Speaker 10: Maybe.
- 18:26Speaker 6: Yeah, maybe I'd better get.
- 18:27Speaker 8: You know, what's Commissioner Weston's home number?
- 18:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I've got it in here someplace.
- 18:37Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, here it is.
- 18:50Speaker 8: Main 999. Oh, the phone. Who's going to be calling
- 18:54Speaker 8: at this hour? Now, where's that phone at? Hello, Commissioner
- 18:59Speaker 8: Weston speaking.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Commissioner, this is Frank Collins. I just received a threat.
- 19:04Speaker 8: Oh, you did?
- 19:04Speaker 3: Yes, I was informed I'm about to meet Oscar Borden's fate.
- 19:07Speaker 8: How are you warned?
- 19:08Speaker 5: Over the telephone just about five minutes ago by a
- 19:10Speaker 5: man who calls himself The Shadow.
- 19:11Speaker 8: The Shadow? Is he mixed up in this?
- 19:14Speaker 12: How should I know?
- 19:16Speaker 3: Wait a minute.
- 19:16Speaker 8: What's the matter?
- 19:17Speaker 6: I thought for a minute I heard a mouth organ play.
- 19:19Speaker 8: Mouth organ? Oh, that's just your nerves, Collins.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Is your door locked?
- 19:23Speaker 4: No.
- 19:23Speaker 6: Go lock it quick.
- 19:24Speaker 12: All right, just a minute.
- 19:28Speaker 6: Good Lord.
- 19:29Speaker 14: I can hear the mouth organ myself over the phone.
- 19:31Speaker 3: Cullen. You're too late, Cullen. Cullen.
- 19:33Speaker 5: You should have locked that door before you made the call.
- 19:35Speaker 6: Ralph Gorman, what?
- 19:37Speaker 3: Cullen.
- 19:37Speaker 5: Who are you?
- 19:38Speaker 3: Maybe you heard me, Cullen. I'm Ralph Gorman.
- 19:40Speaker 8: Gorman.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Watch out.
- 19:42Speaker 8: Don't shoot.
- 19:43Speaker 13: Don't.
- 19:43Speaker 3: Now only one more to go.
- 19:47Speaker 4: Operator.
- 19:48Speaker 8: Operator.
- 19:49Speaker 10: Operator.
- 19:50Speaker 8: Operator. This is Police Commissioner Weston. Get me headquarters.
- 19:53Speaker 3: Hurry, operator.
- 19:54Speaker 6: Hurry.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Good morning.
- 20:03Speaker 12: Come in, Margo.
- 20:05Speaker 13: I just heard that Frank Collins was murdered in his
- 20:07Speaker 13: home last night, Lamont.
- 20:08Speaker 8: Yes.
- 20:09Speaker 14: I've been reading the papers.
- 20:10Speaker 13: It's crazy. How could Ralph Gorman have come back from
- 20:13Speaker 13: the dead to commit these murders?
- 20:15Speaker 2: Margot, yesterday I would have said it was totally impossible.
- 20:19Speaker 14: Today, frankly, I don't know.
- 20:21Speaker 12: At this moment, I don't think.
- 20:23Speaker 4: Of any other hypothesis that would account for the known fact.
- 20:26Speaker 13: Then that means.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Jiminy.
- 20:29Speaker 6: What did you say?
- 20:31Speaker 13: I nearly said Jiminy.
- 20:32Speaker 12: Why did you say that?
- 20:33Speaker 13: Jiminy, I don't know. I was just thinking. Why, does
- 20:36Speaker 13: it mean anything?
- 20:36Speaker 12: Ordinarily, no. In this instance, it may mean everything. At
- 20:40Speaker 12: least it gives me a clue. Margo, is your car outside?
- 20:42Speaker 13: Yes, Lamont.
- 20:43Speaker 8: Well, come on.
- 20:43Speaker 12: We're going places. Be careful, Margot. Watch how you're driving.
- 20:55Speaker 13: You told me to step on it. I thought you
- 20:57Speaker 13: wanted to get to the Regal Hotel in a hurry.
- 20:59Speaker 12: I do, but I'd like to get there all in
- 21:01Speaker 12: one piece.
- 21:01Speaker 13: This is a fine time to tell me that. Incidentally,
- 21:04Speaker 13: why the Regal Hotel?
- 21:05Speaker 4: Governor Roberts is staying there. He's addressing the manufacturer's dinner
- 21:08Speaker 4: at the Colossus Club tonight.
- 21:09Speaker 14: I'd like to.
- 21:10Speaker 12: Be sure he lives to make it.
- 21:12Speaker 13: Oh, Lamont, now you're being mysterious again. Why shouldn't Governor
- 21:15Speaker 13: Roberts live to make his peace?
- 21:17Speaker 12: Because I have reason to believe he's next on the
- 21:18Speaker 12: list marked for murder.
- 21:20Speaker 4: I have an idea that if any attempt is made
- 21:22Speaker 4: on the governor's life tonight, it will probably be tonight.
- 21:24Speaker 12: Ah, here's the hotel. You'll just pull up the curb.
- 21:30Speaker 13: All right.
- 21:32Speaker 12: I said up to the curb, dear, not over it.
- 21:34Speaker 13: Oh, I think you're right.
- 21:36Speaker 12: If I'm not mistaken, so will somebody else before the
- 21:38Speaker 12: night's over. Goodbye, Margot, and thanks for the ride.
- 21:51Speaker 6: This is the service entrance, Governor. Go right through that
- 21:54Speaker 6: door there. You'll be on Marine Street.
- 21:56Speaker 8: Good, thank you.
- 21:57Speaker 12: That's where I told my car to wait.
- 21:59Speaker 8: Governor Roberts, do you think this is wise?
- 22:02Speaker 3: Wise, Latham? Of course it's wise. What danger can there be?
- 22:05Speaker 2: I'm going straight to the dinner at the Colossus Club
- 22:07Speaker 2: alone in my own car with my own chauffeur.
- 22:10Speaker 8: Just as you say, sir. Through this door to the street,
- 22:13Speaker 8: you said, Porter?
- 22:13Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
- 22:14Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 22:19Speaker 6: Now, where's my car? I told Henry to wait.
- 22:21Speaker 8: Oh, there he is.
- 22:25Speaker 6: To the Colossus Club, Henry.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Henry, this is the most preposterous thing I ever heard
- 22:34Speaker 2: of in my life.
- 22:35Speaker 14: What's our police force turning into?
- 22:37Speaker 6: A bunch of old women? Ralph Gorman?
- 22:40Speaker 2: Of course I couldn't pardon him. The man was guilty.
- 22:43Speaker 2: He certainly can't come back from the dead, can he, Henry?
- 22:46Speaker 2: All this cock and bull story about playing a mouth organ,
- 22:49Speaker 2: you don't believe. Henry, what's making that noise? Henry, did
- 22:55Speaker 2: you hear me? Henry, what's the matter with you? This
- 22:57Speaker 2: isn't the way to the Colossus Club. You're heading for
- 22:59Speaker 2: the river.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Stop the car. Henry, I... What?
- 23:05Speaker 6: You're not Henry.
- 23:06Speaker 3: That's right, I ain't Henry, Governor. Don't you remember me,
- 23:10Speaker 3: Ralph Gorman? Ralph Gorman?
- 23:13Speaker 8: No.
- 23:14Speaker 3: No, it's not possible. Well, you see me, don't you?
- 23:17Speaker 10: You remember how I used to play the mouth organ
- 23:19Speaker 10: in the death house?
- 23:20Speaker 3: Like this. Stop the car. Let me out.
- 23:24Speaker 5: I'll let you out, all right, in ten feet of
- 23:26Speaker 5: water when we get to the river.
- 23:28Speaker 3: No, no. Let me out.
- 23:30Speaker 5: You didn't let me out of the chair, did you, Governor?
- 23:33Speaker 3: I burned, remember? Well, you'll drown. Stop the car.
- 23:38Speaker 6: Stop it.
- 23:39Speaker 3: I say you'll kill us both.
- 23:40Speaker 12: Can't kill a dead man, can you, Governor?
- 23:45Speaker 2: Ah, the old fool went and croaked by himself.
- 23:50Speaker 14: Scared to death. Ah, it saves me the trouble.
- 23:56Speaker 12: I wouldn't be too sure of that, Gorman.
- 24:00Speaker 3: What's that?
- 24:00Speaker 12: Governor Roberts is unharmed.
- 24:02Speaker 3: He's only fainted.
- 24:03Speaker 12: He has a weak heart.
- 24:04Speaker 6: Who's that?
- 24:06Speaker 3: Where are you?
- 24:07Speaker 4: You didn't know you had the shadow as a passenger.
- 24:10Speaker 6: Oh, the shadow, huh?
- 24:12Speaker 3: Well, you can't hurt me. Even a shadow can't harm
- 24:15Speaker 3: a ghost.
- 24:16Speaker 4: But you're not a ghost, Gorman.
- 24:17Speaker 6: Yeah, that's what you think.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Don't you know that Ralph Gorman is dead?
- 24:21Speaker 8: Certainly.
- 24:22Speaker 4: But you're not Ralph Gorman. You're his twin brother, Arthur.
- 24:26Speaker 3: That's a lie. No, it isn't, Arthur.
- 24:28Speaker 12: I went down to the.
- 24:28Speaker 4: City records office and checked up on the birth certificate.
- 24:31Speaker 4: A very pretty little story. Your mother had twin boys
- 24:34Speaker 4: and concealed the fact from everyone. He brought you two
- 24:38Speaker 4: up deliberately for a life of crime. Very convenient, wasn't it, Arthur?
- 24:42Speaker 4: No matter what crime one of you committed, the other
- 24:45Speaker 4: was always seen somewhere else at the same time. To
- 24:48Speaker 4: furnish a complete alibi.
- 24:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:50Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm Arthur Gorman, Ralph Gorman's twin brother.
- 24:53Speaker 10: But if we hadn't got the owl mixed up, they'd
- 24:55Speaker 10: never have convicted Ralph that last time.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Too bad, wasn't it?
- 24:59Speaker 4: After all the trouble your mother had taken for years
- 25:01Speaker 4: to conceal the.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Fact you were twins. How did you get on to it?
- 25:05Speaker 4: Why, a friend of mine used the expression Gemini. And
- 25:09Speaker 4: I naturally.
- 25:10Speaker 12: Connected that with Gemini.
- 25:12Speaker 6: I don't get it.
- 25:13Speaker 8: You wouldn't.
- 25:15Speaker 4: Gemini is the sign of the zodiac, which means the twins. Well, Arthur,
- 25:21Speaker 4: this is a very interesting discussion. But I think now
- 25:24Speaker 4: you'd better stop the car.
- 25:25Speaker 3: Oh, yeah? What do you think I am, crazy? They're
- 25:27Speaker 3: never going to burn me.
- 25:28Speaker 12: That's a matter of opinion.
- 25:29Speaker 10: All right, you got me, but I got you, Shadow.
- 25:33Speaker 10: Got you where I want you. There's the river right
- 25:35Speaker 10: ahead of us. I'm going to drive over the embankment.
- 25:37Speaker 10: I'll drown, but so will you. I'll drive right over
- 25:39Speaker 10: the edge.
- 25:39Speaker 4: None of this emergency brake works, you fool.
- 25:42Speaker 11: Oh, my Lord.
- 25:46Speaker 8: Oh, what happened? Boy, look at that crash.
- 25:50Speaker 13: Those drunken drivers, they ought to be put in jail.
- 25:51Speaker 5: She ran head on into the warehouse wall there, did
- 25:53Speaker 5: you see?
- 25:54Speaker 6: There's too many men.
- 25:54Speaker 8: Here's the doctor. Let me through.
- 25:56Speaker 3: There you are, Doc.
- 25:57Speaker 7: I see.
- 25:57Speaker 6: Stand back, please.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Well, how about it, Doc?
- 26:00Speaker 6: Well, I'll be... The man in back is Governor Roberts.
- 26:03Speaker 6: Governor Roberts?
- 26:04Speaker 8: Is he?
- 26:05Speaker 3: No.
- 26:06Speaker 14: He's all right, I think.
- 26:07Speaker 8: Just painted.
- 26:08Speaker 6: Sucked, probably. Sucked? How about the other guy?
- 26:10Speaker 14: The chauffeur here is dead.
- 26:12Speaker 8: Dead? Too bad.
- 26:14Speaker 14: Say, his face looks familiar.
- 26:16Speaker 8: What is it? You know him?
- 26:17Speaker 6: Dead guy in a chauffeur outfit, is it? A living
- 26:19Speaker 6: image of a gunman called Ralph Gorman.
- 26:21Speaker 8: Ralph Gorman?
- 26:22Speaker 6: It can't be. Ralph Gorman went to jail last week.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Well, if it ain't him, it's his twin brother.
- 26:28Speaker 4: If only you'd been able to tell us that a
- 26:31Speaker 4: week ago. justice would have been served a great deal
- 26:35Speaker 4: more quickly. The End.
- 27:03Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 27:30Speaker 8: Thank you.
