Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Good morning. As we head into Thursday, we want to
- 0:09Speaker 1: start this day with God. Time with God is the
- 0:12Speaker 1: foundation of your Christian life, and this week we're meeting
- 0:16Speaker 1: Jesus as we look at John's introduction of Jesus at
- 0:20Speaker 1: the beginning of the Gospel of John. Yesterday we saw
- 0:23Speaker 1: that the word that's Jesus was with God.
- 0:28Speaker 1: And this really reveals to us the kind of relationship
- 0:31Speaker 1: with God that Jesus brings us into, that He shares
- 0:35Speaker 1: with us His near, close intimate relationship with God the
- 0:41Speaker 1: Father and the Holy Spirit. He says to his disciples
- 0:44Speaker 1: at one point, I no longer call you slaves, I
- 0:48Speaker 1: call you friends.
- 0:50Speaker 1: But this is the relationship that Jesus wants us to
- 0:53Speaker 1: have with him and with God the Father. Well, as
- 0:56Speaker 1: a man, Jesus is someone we feel like we can
- 0:59Speaker 1: relate to, someone we can know really closely. We feel
- 1:03Speaker 1: close to Jesus, but how do we relate to the
- 1:08Speaker 1: reality that Jesus is also God, right?
- 1:13Speaker 1: This is what we come to now. John said. In
- 1:16Speaker 1: the beginning, Jesus was there before he was born. He
- 1:19Speaker 1: was there before creation. In the beginning was the Word. Yes,
- 1:23Speaker 1: you can know Him. You can know God. He reveals
- 1:28Speaker 1: who God is to us. He is God saying to us,
- 1:31Speaker 1: this is who I am, and I want you to
- 1:33Speaker 1: know me.
- 1:34Speaker 1: And the word was with God shows to us the
- 1:38Speaker 1: close relationship with God that God wants us to have.
- 1:41Speaker 1: And today, and the Word was God. How do we
- 1:46Speaker 1: connect the Jesus whom we know we can be close
- 1:49Speaker 1: to with the reality that he is also God?
- 1:53Speaker 1: Well, there are 3 phases of the existence of the
- 1:56Speaker 1: second person of the Trinity, God the Son, who became
- 2:01Speaker 1: Jesus when He took on humanity. 3 phases of His existence.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Phase 1, His eternal existence as God outside of time.
- 2:10Speaker 1: In the beginning of all created things, including time, He
- 2:14Speaker 1: already existed in the eternal now. Phase 2, His life
- 2:18Speaker 1: on Earth as Jesus of Nazareth.
- 2:21Speaker 1: He added humanity to his being. He restrained his infinite
- 2:26Speaker 1: attributes to live as a man on earth with all
- 2:30Speaker 1: the limitations of humanity so that he could represent us
- 2:34Speaker 1: at the cross as the representative of humanity. His deity
- 2:39Speaker 1: was veiled. Phase 3. His resurrection life in glory at
- 2:46Speaker 1: the right hand of the Father in heaven.
- 2:49Speaker 1: He's still a man living in his resurrection body, but
- 2:55Speaker 1: his glory as God is no longer veiled but on
- 3:00Speaker 1: full display. Philippians 2:8-11 describes it. The apostle Paul says,
- 3:07Speaker 1: and being found in human form, he humbled himself by
- 3:12Speaker 1: becoming obedient.
- 3:14Speaker 1: To the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore,
- 3:20Speaker 1: God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the
- 3:25Speaker 1: name that is above every name, so that at the
- 3:29Speaker 1: name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and
- 3:33Speaker 1: on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess
- 3:38Speaker 1: that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God
- 3:42Speaker 1: the Father. So.
- 3:44Speaker 1: How should we relate to Jesus? Right? Every tongue will confess.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Every knee shall bow. And yet we've just seen yesterday
- 3:54Speaker 1: that we can be so close to Him, just as
- 3:57Speaker 1: he was with God the Father. Should, should we view
- 4:00Speaker 1: Jesus as our close buddy that we joke and laugh
- 4:04Speaker 1: and cry with and share everything with, or as the
- 4:08Speaker 1: in
- 4:08Speaker 1: Conceivable God of the universe who'll judge all men and
- 4:12Speaker 1: decide who goes to heaven and hell, who created everything
- 4:15Speaker 1: that is with just His word and will one day
- 4:17Speaker 1: destroy it with a word. Well, my sense of the
- 4:21Speaker 1: picture of our relationship with God that Scripture paints holds
- 4:24Speaker 1: a bit of both aspects.
- 4:26Speaker 1: The picture given to us by both Jesus and the
- 4:29Speaker 1: apostle Paul is that we should come like a dearly
- 4:33Speaker 1: loved little child in his or her relationship with their father.
- 4:39Speaker 1: That little child knows how powerful Daddy is and is
- 4:43Speaker 1: quite nervous when Mum says, Wait till your father gets home.
- 4:47Speaker 1: But also knows how much Daddy loves them and runs
- 4:50Speaker 1: to Daddy's open arms for cuddles. It's an interesting paradox,
- 4:55Speaker 1: isn't it? I no longer call you slaves, I call
- 4:58Speaker 1: you friends. But just like the disciples also, we dare
- 5:02Speaker 1: not take his friendship lightly, considering who he is. I'm
- 5:08Speaker 1: John North.
