Transcript
- 0:00Nearly 60% of respondents in a fundraising campaign study for the W.J. Henderson Recreation
- 0:06Center said they'd be likely to donate towards the $2 million goal.
- 0:11Interviews for the study were conducted by BNP Goldie, Canada.
- 0:14Loyalist Township Council approved the motion to receive the report and approved commencement
- 0:18of the capital campaign outlined within it.
- 0:21Senior consultant with BNP Goldie, Canada, Lee Pizzo, spoke about the amount of people
- 0:25willing to donate.
- 0:26Close to 60% of people said they would make a donation they're ready to give.
- 0:32And those who weren't sure, nobody said no.
- 0:35Some said unsure.
- 0:36The majority of those said they were likely to give if they could understand the rationale
- 0:42behind it a little better.
- 0:44So that again, it was seen as a fairly positive comment.
- 0:48Pizzo explains the focus of the study.
- 0:51Our question was to determine whether raising $2 million in donations for the renewal of
- 0:56the W.J. Henderson Recreation Center in donations and sponsorship is realistic and achievable.
- 1:04So we wanted to determine whether a fundraising campaign could be undertaken and how much
- 1:10support that campaign would have in the community.
- 1:13We wanted to identify the level of participation in that fundraising campaign by donors and
- 1:19volunteers and to identify campaign leaders and to assess their level of engagement so
- 1:25we know who would be working with Loyalist to raise the funds.
- 1:30Pizzo detailed the process they took in the study.
- 1:33We prepare a case for support or a rationale around the question.
- 1:39We work to get a list of people to interview, influencers, decision makers, people in the
- 1:44know in the community.
- 1:46We prepare and agreed to interview questionnaire and we send out some meeting requests by email
- 1:51and follow them up.
- 1:53Then, of course, we do the appointments and then our third phase, of course, is the consolidation
- 1:59of those results, our analysis, the creation of the report, and that all happened between
- 2:04September and today's date.
- 2:06Pizzo noted the main demographics that showed interest.
- 2:09There were generally two types of people that were considered to be interested in the project
- 2:14itself and that's the new or younger residents and potential residents of Loyalist Township
- 2:19who want services like this and will move into an area where there are services.
- 2:26And then there are more established residents who are interested in the project because
- 2:29they wanted something to be proud of.
- 2:31Pizzo explained some of the challenges they found in the study.
- 2:34The challenges of running a $2 million campaign right now was that there are competition from
- 2:39other large charities such as the hospitals and post-secondary institutes in the area.
- 2:44There is a perception from some people that it is already built because it is and therefore
- 2:50is already paid for.
- 2:52So why would you need a campaign?
- 2:55The general economy and community demographics were seen by some as a challenge.
- 3:00It was also commented that not everybody uses it.
- 3:03There are some regional dynamics at play because Loyalist is a smaller community next to a
- 3:10larger community and there were some who wondered that aren't the taxes already paying for it.
- 3:16Pizzo spoke about the response to the $2 million goal itself.
- 3:20We talked about and we tested the $2 million goal.
- 3:24The feedback we got was either uncertain or positive.
- 3:29There was no negativity around that and the uncertainty we had was people projecting their
- 3:35uncertainty onto others.
- 3:37So the people we interviewed said, I think it's a great idea, but I'm not sure how others
- 3:40would take the goal.
- 3:43So that was really an interesting part of the campaign for us and something again that
- 3:50will need to be addressed in communication.
- 3:52Pizzo noted some common themes brought up within the interviews.
- 3:56There was general agreement that the facility is needed and a new facility.
- 4:01That it is a world-class project.
- 4:03It's not just another arena.
- 4:07It is regional.
- 4:08It is not just Loyalist Township that they would bring people in from other areas and
- 4:13that many clubs, groups and ages can participate in the community campaign.
- 4:18That there would be broad acceptance from the general community.
- 4:22And there was a broad support for donations and participation across the interviews.
- 4:29Pizzo detailed the next steps.
- 4:31The immediate next steps is that our organization BMP will create a campaign plan and timeline
- 4:39that will put all of this together, include a campaign committee, a working committee.
- 4:46Of those volunteers who are going to hit the ground, get out there and get the major donations.
- 4:51That will mean in terms of reference, the scope, the scale of what they're doing.
- 4:55A fundraising advisory committee that would be made up of both council staff and volunteers
- 5:04so that there would be a bit of an oversight to what's going on.
- 5:08And specifically around timing, goals and naming opportunities.
- 5:12And again, that's about quantifying something so that you know when you've achieved something.
- 5:17And specifically a very strong communications plan that sets out actionable items as well
- 5:24as strategy to make the campaign successful.
- 5:29Pizzo went on to speak about a timeline for next year and beyond.
- 5:33In January, we will complete the campaign case, the justification, the full rationale
- 5:38around it, as well as recruiting campaign leadership, getting a campaign chair specifically.
- 5:47And then next year, we would start with recruiting the other committee members, finalizing the
- 5:53communication materials themselves, create a campaign reference guide and training materials
- 5:58for those volunteers and staff, those question and answers, scenarios, the ability for people
- 6:05to move forward on some things like that.
- 6:09And then finally next January, we have our final report and future planning for sponsorship
- 6:14and other activities.
- 6:15Pizzo noted the positive outlook in the interviews and highlighted a positive quote.
- 6:20One of the big things that came out of it was that it was a legacy project.
- 6:23It was a rallying point for the community.
- 6:25This is a once in a generation project.
- 6:28As in this quote, it's a community hub.
- 6:30It's safe in its accessible space.
- 6:32It's something that many people in this council probably would only make a decision on once
- 6:37in a lifetime.
- 6:38Mayor Jim Haggadourne spoke about the report and where the township stands.
- 6:41I had great information and it looks like we've got a solid plan to start moving forward
- 6:45on.
