- 4:35Speaker 2: No, I don't know what plans are yet. I thought, well,
- 4:40Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know if we're doing something. If
- 4:42Speaker 2: he has to work, Little Lama has this in musical
- 4:45Speaker 2: this weekend. I don't know. I don't know what the
- 4:47Speaker 2: plans are mean, but I'm just there for whatever.
- 4:50Speaker 1: When you, you know, got pregnant because somebodys in khakis,
- 4:54Speaker 1: maybe y'all should like load this weekend.
- 4:57Speaker 2: So Mom, if you're listening, I am not pregnant. Please
- 4:59Speaker 2: do thought me yelling at me? Why did you tell
- 5:02Speaker 2: everyone you're pregnant and not me? And I'm like, why
- 5:05Speaker 2: would I do that? Why would she do She did.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Do that, but let me tell you she could possibly
- 5:12Speaker 1: she's been covering this crazy chick Laura Owens over on
- 5:15Speaker 1: Couch Court Case Files, who gets pregnant when the winds blow. So, Lama,
- 5:22Speaker 1: you could have gotten pregnant just by looking. I could
- 5:25Speaker 1: probably just been elba Feet's pregnant.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it's crazy how that works out. We went to
- 5:31Speaker 2: the Laura Owens class and got a certificate on anatomy
- 5:36Speaker 2: that she doesn't understand how that works. But anyway, again,
- 5:39Speaker 2: a very happy birthday to mister Lama's slash elbow feats.
- 5:43Speaker 2: We love him here now, Terry, why don't you tell
- 5:46Speaker 2: us what we will be covering it tonight?
- 5:50Speaker 1: So tonight we'll be covering the case of Cassie Stoddard.
- 5:54Speaker 1: She was an innocent teenager who was brutally murdered by
- 5:58Speaker 1: two of her friends.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Do not like.
- 6:04Speaker 2: It? Well? What before we get into that, let's talk
- 6:09Speaker 2: about what we're drinking, Hi Savage, what are you drinking tonight?
- 6:12Speaker 1: I am drinking Forever Young Rose again, balanced and juicy
- 6:17Speaker 1: with light tannins. The wine pops with flavors of red fruit,
- 6:22Speaker 1: white peaches, and citrus and finishes clean with mineral notes
- 6:26Speaker 1: of chalk and fresh acidity. Chalk it does, but it's
- 6:34Speaker 1: it's good. I don't know if I would describe it
- 6:36Speaker 1: as chalk, but it has a little bit of After
- 6:40Speaker 1: the tannins, you get a little bit of a you know,
- 6:43Speaker 1: like when you blow chalk in the dust, you kind
- 6:45Speaker 1: of get a little.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Yeah, whose favorite break from elementary school was taken? And
- 6:51Speaker 2: cleaning off the erasers in the room. Oh is the
- 6:55Speaker 2: best when you got to pick up for that?
- 6:58Speaker 1: And because this case some friends, I decided to drink
- 7:02Speaker 1: out of my best spring glass that says Terry and Cheryl.
- 7:05Speaker 1: We each have one. Oh, because real friends don't do
- 7:09Speaker 1: what these guys did.
- 7:10Speaker 2: No, I was gonna say, I want to call these
- 7:12Speaker 2: guys friends. Well, tonight, I am drinking Stella Rosa Original
- 7:16Speaker 2: Honey Peach. This is a refreshing semi sweet wine with
- 7:20Speaker 2: flavors of honey and peach. I know, crazy, Uh, serve
- 7:28Speaker 2: look at me. I'm so ready to read tonight. Serve
- 7:31Speaker 2: to chill with fresh fruit, cheese, spicy cuisine and dessert.
- 7:35Speaker 2: And it's pretty good. It's again not a very high alcohol,
- 7:38Speaker 2: but it's nice. No, No, it has like a bubbly
- 7:44Speaker 2: the Stellar Rosa. This is the second bottle I tried,
- 7:48Speaker 2: and it has kind of like the bubbles of like champagne,
- 7:52Speaker 2: but just a little bit, and I like it.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Savage Honey, I'm gonna need you to put down the
- 7:58Speaker 1: matches love, Okay, please, okay, don't do that? Okay, do
- 8:05Speaker 1: we need you here, and we don't want everyone's hurt.
- 8:09Speaker 1: At least video and share it in the discord. Okay, art,
- 8:15Speaker 1: he's looking for new content, Savage. They're just kidding, all right.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Well with that, you guys, let's get into the story
- 8:23Speaker 2: of tonight's case because it is a little bit of
- 8:25Speaker 2: a long one, yes, but boy it starts off just
- 8:30Speaker 2: from the beginning, So let's get into it, all right.
- 8:34Speaker 2: So Cassie Joe Stoddard was born on December twenty first,
- 8:39Speaker 2: nineteen eighty nine. She had an older sister, Christy, and
- 8:43Speaker 2: a younger brother, Andrew. She's so pretty, she is beautiful,
- 8:47Speaker 2: so pretty. Cassie was especially close to Andrew, who was
- 8:51Speaker 2: just one year behind her in school. He later shared
- 8:55Speaker 2: that they were raised primarily by their grandparents and described
- 8:59Speaker 2: Cassie as he had strong sibling, someone he always looked
- 9:03Speaker 2: up to. And then Christie, who was seven years older
- 9:06Speaker 2: than Cassie, was not as close to the younger too,
- 9:09Speaker 2: which makes sense, it's to say, I.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Mean, absolutely makes sense. Who wants to, you know, hang out.
- 9:17Speaker 4: With the.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Right that's quite an age difference. Then yeah, I'm sure
- 9:23Speaker 2: she loves them just the same. But I as a
- 9:26Speaker 2: teenager would not want to be hanging out with seven
- 9:28Speaker 2: year olds. Absolutely.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Cassie was a typical teenager. She loved music, and she
- 9:34Speaker 1: was artistic unlike me, and she especially loved to draw,
- 9:39Speaker 1: unlike me. Friend said she got along with everyone and
- 9:44Speaker 1: was always trying to make the people she loved laugh.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Some described her as being quite at first, but once
- 9:53Speaker 1: she got to know her, she was anything but quiet.
- 9:57Speaker 1: So she kind of reminds me of Monkey Button that way.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Quiet at first, and then once she's comfortable, she's like
- 10:04Speaker 1: me and won't shut up.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I mean I feel like I'm similar to that.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Maybe not as much now, but definitely before. Now sixteen
- 10:14Speaker 2: years old, Cassie was a junior at Pocatella High School
- 10:18Speaker 2: in Pocatel How did you just say that? I said, Pocatello.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Is that not right?
- 10:23Speaker 1: You said Pocatella. It's Pokatella. Oh but you said pocket
- 10:27Speaker 1: And I was like, I you didn't me, Oh no,
- 10:31Speaker 1: that's nothing mispronouncing. I figured it.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Was Pocatello because when I was reading all this, I
- 10:37Speaker 2: was like, pokn it's probably I don't even know if
- 10:39Speaker 2: that's how you say it. But well, I've also already
- 10:43Speaker 2: read like a billion words earlier today, I study Hi,
- 10:46Speaker 2: welcome now. She was dating Matt Beckham, and they had
- 10:50Speaker 2: been an exclusive couple for about five months. Very serious.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Like many teenagers, they spent much of their time together
- 11:01Speaker 2: so young looking. Oh goodness, I know it looks like
- 11:04Speaker 2: story is still heartbreaking.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Matt was described as a regular teenager, much like Cassie.
- 11:10Speaker 1: The two enjoyed typical high school activities, spending time with friends,
- 11:15Speaker 1: watching movies, listening to music. Cassie's family cared for Matt
- 11:20Speaker 1: and believed the two made a sweet couple. Both Cassie
- 11:24Speaker 1: and Matt were said to be responsible and level headed teenagers,
- 11:29Speaker 1: which does not always a thing.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Like what does it even mean? Though?
- 11:33Speaker 1: I mean you'll find out why they were responded.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Now on excuse me. On September twenty second, two thousand
- 11:43Speaker 2: and six, Cassie went to school like she did every
- 11:47Speaker 2: other day. The only difference was that she brought an
- 11:50Speaker 2: overnight bag with her. After school, she was heading to
- 11:53Speaker 2: her aunt and uncle's home on Whispering Cliffs Drives to
- 11:57Speaker 2: house it and care for their pets while they were
- 11:59Speaker 2: out of for the weekend, which is a big deal
- 12:03Speaker 2: for a sixteen year old responsible. I guess right, there's
- 12:08Speaker 2: that responsibleness.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Cassie had permission for her boyfriend Matt to come over
- 12:13Speaker 1: and spend time with her and watch television hang out.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Her family trusted both of them. The plan was for
- 12:21Speaker 1: Matt to stop by each day hang out, but they
- 12:27Speaker 1: weren't worried about Cassie. They were comfortable with her staying
- 12:31Speaker 1: in the home on her own. I just all of
- 12:33Speaker 1: a sudden had a vision of myself when I house
- 12:37Speaker 1: set at sixteen, and I was playing through my head
- 12:40Speaker 1: and I totally couldn't read because I was like.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Oh, I know what I was doing and not responsible
- 12:45Speaker 2: or level headed. No, it was not. Now, Cassie arrived
- 12:51Speaker 2: at her aunt and uncle's home on Whispering Cliff's Drive,
- 12:54Speaker 2: settled in, spent some time with the pets, and called
- 12:57Speaker 2: Matt to finalize their plans for the evening. It was
- 13:00Speaker 2: meant to be a simple night, just watching movies together
- 13:03Speaker 2: while she house set. And that's a really cute home.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Isn't it A do like that? I think it's adorable.
- 13:10Speaker 2: You know, it looks like a vampire.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Now, Matt arrived around six point thirty, you know, to
- 13:14Speaker 1: spend the evening with his garyl hangout. Now, some reports
- 13:19Speaker 1: say that Matt invited Brian and Tory over without Cassie knowing,
- 13:24Speaker 1: But then there's others that say Cassie knew they were
- 13:28Speaker 1: coming and that they were told there were going to
- 13:30Speaker 1: be a party at the house, even though there wasn't
- 13:33Speaker 1: going to be.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Right. Oh hey, there's stupid faces. Don't worry, you guys
- 13:39Speaker 2: will too. Now. Interestingly, Tory and Brian had initially declined
- 13:44Speaker 2: the invitation. It was only after Matt told them there
- 13:48Speaker 2: was a party that they agreed to come over. A
- 13:50Speaker 2: detail of that at the time may have sounded like
- 13:53Speaker 2: typical teenage behavior. Though I kind of wonder about this,
- 13:58Speaker 2: considering what we know they did, all this planning, premeditation,
- 14:04Speaker 2: I don't really think that that's entirely accurate. Well, I'm curious.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Because we don't know when they got invited to go over.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Because Cassie, I found so she had known for like
- 14:17Speaker 1: since Monday that she was going to be doing it. Okay,
- 14:20Speaker 1: so this wasn't right random? Okay, so it was totally random, gotcha.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Cassie being kind and welcoming, She showed Tory and Brian
- 14:31Speaker 1: around the house when they arrived, She walked them through
- 14:34Speaker 1: the bedrooms, the kitchen, the basement, all while keeping an
- 14:39Speaker 1: eye on things and making sure nothing was damaged. Because
- 14:44Speaker 1: Brian was known to be a little wild at times.
- 14:47Speaker 1: He was like that young teenager. They're like, oh, let's
- 14:50Speaker 1: knock that on the floor. Oh, I want to play
- 14:52Speaker 1: with this kind of thing. And she was responsible even
- 14:56Speaker 1: in someone else's home. She took the role of house
- 14:59Speaker 1: sitter very serious.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Oh there's that responsible level of huddenness again. You're right now.
- 15:06Speaker 2: After the tour, the group settled into the living room
- 15:09Speaker 2: to watch Kill Bill two. Tory and Brian didn't seem
- 15:12Speaker 2: very interested in that movie, so immediately go to jail.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Send him to jail right now, nothing even happens. Go
- 15:20Speaker 2: to jail seeing it. Oh it's so good.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I love the kill Bills.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Anyway, they thought, and especially for two guys who are
- 15:27Speaker 2: all like, ooh, we're all about writing scriptsly movies will
- 15:30Speaker 2: woo and you didn't seem interested in Kill Bill two? Okay, anyway,
- 15:37Speaker 2: they thought they were going to a party, not a
- 15:39Speaker 2: quiet movie night with a couple.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I mean, who wants to sit there and watch your
- 15:44Speaker 1: friends make out and kttle on the couch? I mean,
- 15:47Speaker 1: come on you. At one point, Brian left the room,
- 15:52Speaker 1: saying he was going to the bathroom or the kitchen
- 15:54Speaker 1: for a snack, but he was gone long enough that
- 15:58Speaker 1: Cassie went to check on him and brought him back
- 16:01Speaker 1: to the living room. Then, after about an hour, Run
- 16:05Speaker 1: and Tory said we're done. We're leaving, telling Cassie and
- 16:10Speaker 1: Matt they were getting ahead to a movie theater to
- 16:12Speaker 1: see a film instead.
- 16:14Speaker 2: To see a film over kill exactly, Lady and Gray
- 16:18Speaker 2: hate them already.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Kill Bill two is Tarantino.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Yes, so is the first one.
- 16:24Speaker 1: I've never seen the first one either.
- 16:25Speaker 2: All right, So, yeah, I know you're not going to
- 16:27Speaker 2: be out for a while again. I'm going to write
- 16:29Speaker 2: stuff down that you need to watch. You remember how
- 16:32Speaker 2: awesome Game of Thrones was when you finally succumbed.
- 16:36Speaker 1: That's what happens when you take drugs and watch TV
- 16:38Speaker 1: shows that Lama tells you to watch.
- 16:40Speaker 2: You get up. That's right. I'm going to give you
- 16:43Speaker 2: a whole list. Hi, Lani, Hi, you can.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Give me a whole list. Please put it together. And
- 16:48Speaker 1: if you're in the Discord, there is bad and the Discord,
- 16:52Speaker 1: drop me movies to see.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Yes, we'll keep her busy. Now, Cassie and Matt walk
- 16:58Speaker 2: the boys out, then return to the couch, settling back
- 17:01Speaker 2: in together to continue the movie. You know, just settling
- 17:05Speaker 2: in and having a quiet night, just the two of them.
- 17:08Speaker 2: I mean, it's cute. It's cute.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Lady and Gray. Lama and Terry are always right, Okay,
- 17:16Speaker 1: not just Lama. Double h just texted me and he goes,
- 17:25Speaker 1: you have seen Kill Bill. You probably just don't remember it. Okay,
- 17:33Speaker 1: you don't remember, you got to watch it again. I
- 17:36Speaker 1: don't remember names of movies, but I remember the movie
- 17:39Speaker 1: like if I start watching him like, oh shit, I've
- 17:41Speaker 1: seen this, and I can tell you the whole storyline.
- 17:44Speaker 1: So that's no. Leebras are not always right.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Study's having dental surgery tomorrow. I need some recommendations, may
- 17:52Speaker 2: I suggest Sir Laura Owen saga to you first, and yes, yes,
- 17:58Speaker 2: everybody put your favorites up to watch it. In the chat,
- 18:01Speaker 2: we'll talk to real movie buffs and out these two
- 18:04Speaker 2: teenage douche neot nozzles.
- 18:07Speaker 1: About fifteen to twenty minutes after they finally resumed watching,
- 18:11Speaker 1: because they went and took the dog out, got snacks
- 18:15Speaker 1: and things. The power in the house suddenly went out.
- 18:19Speaker 1: The couple assumed it was just a brief outage and
- 18:22Speaker 1: expected it to come back on, and it did so
- 18:26Speaker 1: they felt relieved, but that relief didn't last long. The
- 18:30Speaker 1: power shut off again shortly after it returned.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Do not like this, and do not like this at all.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Wanting to make sure everything was okay, Matt got up
- 18:42Speaker 2: to check the house and see what might be causing
- 18:45Speaker 2: the issue. As he moved to investigate, Cassie's aunt and
- 18:49Speaker 2: uncle's dogs began barking and growling at the top of
- 18:52Speaker 2: the stairs that led down to the basement. Hearing that,
- 18:56Speaker 2: Matt decided he didn't want to leave Cassie alone in
- 18:59Speaker 2: the living room, so he returned to the couch and
- 19:01Speaker 2: the two of them stayed and stayed seated together. This
- 19:04Speaker 2: is the point where Lama leaves the house. All right,
- 19:07Speaker 2: my dogs are acting weird. I'm out okay, No.
- 19:12Speaker 1: But how sweet of a teenage boy. Instead of trying
- 19:16Speaker 1: to be all mainly and go check things out, he
- 19:19Speaker 1: went and sat back down with his sweet girl.
- 19:22Speaker 2: I mean, probably weirded him out too. There's been times
- 19:24Speaker 2: where I've been like you know, Eublifet and I have
- 19:25Speaker 2: been in our bedroom and I'll be like, I thought
- 19:27Speaker 2: I heard something. He's like, well, what the fuck do
- 19:28Speaker 2: you want me to do? And then he grabs like
- 19:31Speaker 2: some random thing like a hangar or something.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Like what are you gonna do with that?
- 19:35Speaker 2: He's like, I got to roll. I'm like, okay, well
- 19:39Speaker 2: fall in front of them so I can get out quicker.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Thanks, oh sweet precious. Feeling uneasy after the power outages,
- 19:49Speaker 1: Matt called his mom and asked if he could stay
- 19:51Speaker 1: the night with Cassie. The darkness and the strange interruptions
- 19:56Speaker 1: had rattled her and he didn't want to leave her alone. Mom,
- 20:00Speaker 1: being a responsible parent, told him no, and also because
- 20:04Speaker 1: she had a surprise for him. I think, as they
- 20:07Speaker 1: were sixteen in a relationship, you I want them spend
- 20:11Speaker 1: the night.
- 20:12Speaker 2: I mean, no, I or at least I mean maybe
- 20:15Speaker 2: even if you believe your kids at that point that
- 20:17Speaker 2: that is happening, and would still be like mmm mmm,
- 20:20Speaker 2: a lately story.
- 20:21Speaker 1: I will tell you they were having sex, because we'll
- 20:26Speaker 1: get to it later. One of the boys' moms is
- 20:28Speaker 1: a you know, they were sixteen and in love, but
- 20:31Speaker 1: they used protection. It was found in the toilet.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Responsible and little bit so, but his mom did offer
- 20:39Speaker 2: another solution, and Cassie was welcome to come stay at
- 20:42Speaker 2: their house since the power was out at her aunt
- 20:45Speaker 2: and uncle's home, but Cassie declined she felt a responsibility
- 20:50Speaker 2: to remain there. She was house sitting, caring for the pets,
- 20:53Speaker 2: and she intended to follow through on that commitment. So see,
- 20:57Speaker 2: the mom isn't a wicked mother. There's adults there so.
- 21:04Speaker 1: And look how responsible she was being. Just before ten
- 21:10Speaker 1: thirty pm, Matt's mom arrived to pick him up. The
- 21:14Speaker 1: power came back on briefly, but then went out again.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Matt figured the power would be back on again shortly
- 21:20Speaker 1: since it kept going off and on, and he wasn't
- 21:24Speaker 1: overly worried or concerned, unlike Lama would be. When his
- 21:29Speaker 1: mom picked him up, his dad was also in the
- 21:31Speaker 1: car with her, which was the surprise she had mentioned,
- 21:38Speaker 1: because guys, his dad had been away in rehab and
- 21:41Speaker 1: he was not expected to be back home yet, so
- 21:44Speaker 1: it was, you know, a surprise.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Surprise, an interesting surprise, but okay. Now, After his mom
- 21:52Speaker 2: picked him up, Matt then called Tory to see where
- 21:55Speaker 2: he was and whether they could meet up. Tory answered
- 22:00Speaker 2: whisper saying he was in a movie that was not
- 22:03Speaker 2: as good as Kill Bill Too, and would call him
- 22:07Speaker 2: the next day. Matt had no way of knowing, though,
- 22:11Speaker 2: that his call to Tory would set events into motion
- 22:14Speaker 2: that would forever change all of their lives. Oh boy,
- 22:20Speaker 2: here we go, guys.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Oh savage, why do we need to fix elbow feet spanner?
- 22:25Speaker 1: What's wrong with it?
- 22:27Speaker 5: No?
- 22:27Speaker 2: They're just okay.
- 22:29Speaker 1: I'm like, what is wrong with it? Brian Draper was
- 22:33Speaker 1: born in nineteen ninety and was adopted at birth by
- 22:36Speaker 1: Pam and Carrie Draper. The Draper family which included Pam, Carrie, Brian,
- 22:41Speaker 1: and his sister Tiffany. Not a horse, Oh, elbowfette. That's
- 22:45Speaker 1: because I misspelled elbowfeet.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Oh I am drinking out of my storm Trooper. I
- 22:53Speaker 2: didn't drink picked the Bubba fe one.
- 22:56Speaker 1: But the Drapers initially lived in Utah before moving to Pocatella, Idaho,
- 23:01Speaker 1: when Brian was just a wee twelve years old.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Oh wow, By the way, I didn't know which one
- 23:12Speaker 2: was which, Like their names matching what they're with faces?
- 23:15Speaker 2: That's not who I thought. I thought Brian was the
- 23:17Speaker 2: other one. Interesting.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Look at the eyes.
- 23:21Speaker 2: I know I know, I see it more now, I'm like, oh, okay, actually,
- 23:24Speaker 2: dug that makes more sense. Yeah, oh Amos, says her too.
- 23:28Speaker 2: She thought it was the other way around. So interesting, Okay,
- 23:35Speaker 2: well all right. So Brian was raised in a typical
- 23:37Speaker 2: Mormon household. There have been reports that Brian was known
- 23:41Speaker 2: to be a troubled and that he maintained a MySpace
- 23:46Speaker 2: page where he posted about suicide and murder, along with
- 23:51Speaker 2: expressing a fascination with the Columbine Shooters. How original, Brian,
- 23:56Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, you're such an edge lord. Although he
- 24:00Speaker 2: grew up in a sheltered environment, Brian said he spent
- 24:03Speaker 2: a great deal of time alone, stating that his mother
- 24:06Speaker 2: was often busy and his father was not around. He
- 24:10Speaker 2: learned he had been adopted when he was ten years old,
- 24:13Speaker 2: just two years before the family relocated to Idaho.
- 24:18Speaker 1: And what's interesting you'll hear later, you know he talks
- 24:23Speaker 1: about his father was not around. His father traveled out
- 24:26Speaker 1: of state to work to be able to afford for
- 24:30Speaker 1: them to live in this nice bougie place.
- 24:34Speaker 2: What an asshole?
- 24:35Speaker 1: How dare he be a responsible? Addbt adult? Brian Andre
- 24:41Speaker 1: shared a strong interest in movies, especially horror films. Inspired
- 24:46Speaker 1: by that interest, the two teenagers decided it would be
- 24:49Speaker 1: cool to write their own screenplay. They settled on the
- 24:53Speaker 1: idea of a horror story centered around two teenage killers.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Oh my god, which I'd never a story like that
- 25:01Speaker 2: has never been written in the history of ever. What
- 25:05Speaker 2: fucking geniuses they are. Oh my goodness, Elbow Wow, you.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Are so freaking adorable.
- 25:17Speaker 2: It's funny. This guy sucks, So it's fine.
- 25:21Speaker 1: He sucks. That's why I'm like so okay with it.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I know he has a kid. But guess what, wait,
- 25:27Speaker 2: just wait, people. Brian was already known for carrying a
- 25:31Speaker 2: video camera with him and filming nearly everything he recorded
- 25:36Speaker 2: himself and Tory driving around talking about everyday teenage topics,
- 25:41Speaker 2: along with conversations that were far more disturbing on camera.
- 25:46Speaker 2: They discussed their fascination with the perpetrators of the Combine
- 25:50Speaker 2: massacre and their admiration for characters Billy Loomis Stu what Machra, Yeah, Mocker, No,
- 25:57Speaker 2: I think it's Mocker from the original Scream movie The
- 26:00Speaker 2: Buffy's Gonna yell at me any minute. They also talked
- 26:03Speaker 2: about what it would be like to commit a school
- 26:06Speaker 2: shooting and even made initial plans all while recording themselves.
- 26:11Speaker 2: So these two bozos are the least creative people on
- 26:16Speaker 2: the plants basically, So you're not even that creative or special.
- 26:21Speaker 1: But sure, and I know Buffy is not able to
- 26:25Speaker 1: be with us tonight. But Buffy, it's all for you, baby,
- 26:31Speaker 1: That's true for you. This case was brought to us
- 26:33Speaker 1: by Buddy. We finally got to be able to do it.
- 26:36Speaker 1: So they yes, they're also dumb. Oh just wait to
- 26:41Speaker 1: see how dumb. Let's return to the night of September
- 26:45Speaker 1: twenty second, two thousand and six. After Matt left, Cassie
- 26:49Speaker 1: began getting ready to settle in for the night. Not
- 26:52Speaker 1: long after the power went out again. Earlier in the evening,
- 26:57Speaker 1: it had flickered off, on, off and on, coming back
- 27:01Speaker 1: on and off, so she reasonably assumed it would do
- 27:04Speaker 1: the same thing. Instead of searching the house or going
- 27:08Speaker 1: down to the basement, she decided, you know what, I'm
- 27:10Speaker 1: just gonna lay down on the couch and wait.
- 27:12Speaker 2: That's what I would do. I give you that or leave.
- 27:15Speaker 2: I ain't gotta go check it out.
- 27:16Speaker 1: And based on what had al really happened, she did
- 27:19Speaker 1: the logical thing and did not.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Panic, right, but I scare myself walking to the kitchen
- 27:25Speaker 2: to my bedroom, which I was like fifteen feet away
- 27:28Speaker 2: from each other. So it doesn't take much now. What
- 27:32Speaker 2: Cassie did not know, though, was that during the house
- 27:36Speaker 2: tour she had kindly given them, Brian and Tory had
- 27:41Speaker 2: unlocked the basement door.
- 27:46Speaker 1: That's where it gets up after leaving earlier that even
- 27:52Speaker 1: Brian and Torrey returned to the house. Before coming back inside,
- 27:57Speaker 1: they had changed clothes, armed themselves with the knives they
- 28:00Speaker 1: had purchased, along with masks.
- 28:05Speaker 2: I know, sorry, lady and Gray, there there's mask. They
- 28:09Speaker 2: made noise in the basement, hoping it would draw Cassie downstairs.
- 28:14Speaker 2: When she did not come down, they went upstairs instead.
- 28:19Speaker 2: They found Cassie lying on the couch and there they
- 28:22Speaker 2: attacked her, stabbing her thirty times. Thirty times. Told you
- 28:33Speaker 2: they gush canoes?
- 28:34Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right, there might be a mouse.
- 28:39Speaker 2: No, we annihilated them all.
- 28:43Speaker 1: The next day. No, the next day, on Saturday, September
- 28:47Speaker 1: twenty third, two thousand and six, Matt tried to reach
- 28:50Speaker 1: Cassie but was unable to get her on the phone.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Throughout the day, no one spoke with her. Her family
- 28:58Speaker 1: wasn't expecting to hear from her while she was house sitting,
- 29:01Speaker 1: and that kind of just assumed she was simply busy.
- 29:05Speaker 2: I mean, I also remember it's two thousand and six,
- 29:07Speaker 2: all right, while cell phones are a thing, and being
- 29:10Speaker 2: this age and having a cell phone like it was
- 29:12Speaker 2: not as common then for kids as it is now.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Like I only got a phone because I had a
- 29:18Speaker 2: job to payment phone bill, and that was like my
- 29:21Speaker 2: senior year of school or something like that. So to
- 29:25Speaker 2: not hear from somebody isn't really like a big deal
- 29:31Speaker 2: in this timeframe, you know.
- 29:34Speaker 1: So, I mean back in my day, honey, we had pagers.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Right now, he spent time hanging out with Tory, that's right.
- 29:46Speaker 2: That next day, Matt hangs out with Tory, believing that
- 29:49Speaker 2: everything was normal. He then had reached out to Cassie's mom,
- 29:54Speaker 2: who had not spoken with her either, who then tried
- 29:57Speaker 2: to call her daughter several times, but it was also
- 30:01Speaker 2: unable to reach her. Still, no immediate alarms were raised.
- 30:06Speaker 2: I mean, they may not have called waiting or an
- 30:08Speaker 2: answering machine. If you don't know what we're talking about,
- 30:11Speaker 2: then just trust me. This is all normal and fine. Okay,
- 30:16Speaker 2: and it's the smallest town in Idaho, you know.
- 30:19Speaker 1: So on Sunday, September twenty fourth, Cassie's aunt, uncle, and
- 30:24Speaker 1: her thirteen year old cousin Allison, returned home. Allison rushed
- 30:30Speaker 1: ahead and was the first to walk inside. What she
- 30:33Speaker 1: encountered was something no child or human should ever have
- 30:39Speaker 1: to witness.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Yeah. Lying on the living room floor was her sixteen
- 30:44Speaker 2: year old cousin, Cassie deceased. In a panic, Cassie's aunt
- 30:48Speaker 2: called nine one one, reporting that her niece, who had
- 30:51Speaker 2: been house sitting, was on the floor and dead.
- 30:57Speaker 1: The nightmare for Cassie's family and friends had just begun,
- 31:02Speaker 1: and what happened that weekend would ripple outward, touching Matt
- 31:05Speaker 1: and his family, and shaking the entire community.
- 31:10Speaker 2: I would think, so yeah, I mean goodness. Now police
- 31:14Speaker 2: began to carrying the house and processing the scene. At
- 31:18Speaker 2: the time or at the same time, an officer was
- 31:20Speaker 2: sent to Cassie's home to deliver the devastating news to
- 31:24Speaker 2: her mother and family. That's tough, so.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Cassie's mother, Anne told investigators she did not know of
- 31:33Speaker 1: anyone who would want to hurt her daughter. She did
- 31:37Speaker 1: share that Cassie's boyfriend had planned to spend the night
- 31:40Speaker 1: with her while she was or spend time with her
- 31:43Speaker 1: while she was house sitting. Anne did call Matt and
- 31:47Speaker 1: scream at him, what did you fucking do to my daughter?
- 31:52Speaker 2: Oh? Bet, bet bet? I mean also listen, no shame.
- 31:59Speaker 2: It usually is the significant other, Okay, yep, so I
- 32:06Speaker 2: and I can't even imagine the emotions that she's feeling already,
- 32:12Speaker 2: you know, so I would do the same man, No
- 32:17Speaker 2: judgment from me. Yeah, called their friends and did it,
- 32:20Speaker 2: and a little girl found her. What a bunch of mons.
- 32:23Speaker 1: I'm gonna be using friends my little quotes like I
- 32:27Speaker 1: do for a pat and pos because those are not.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Friends, right, No, all right. So, As is often the
- 32:36Speaker 2: case and investigations, police initially focused on the person closest
- 32:41Speaker 2: to the victims. Police went to Matt's home to inform
- 32:45Speaker 2: him about Cassie and to ask when he had last
- 32:47Speaker 2: seen and spoken with her. This kid is lucky as
- 32:51Speaker 2: shit is. All I have to say is, oh my goodness.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Matt was upfront and cooperative. He told invest gators at
- 33:00Speaker 1: the last time he saw Cassie was Friday night, when
- 33:03Speaker 1: his mom picked him up from r aunt uncle's house.
- 33:06Speaker 1: He explained that he tried to call her on Saturday
- 33:09Speaker 1: but had been unable to reach her. Guys, he didn't
- 33:12Speaker 1: have his own car. It's not like he could just
- 33:13Speaker 1: jump in his car and run over there. So don't
- 33:16Speaker 1: even start that game, people.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Right, They're just kids still in the early aunts now.
- 33:23Speaker 2: The first officer who spoke with Matt felt his reaction
- 33:27Speaker 2: was not what he expected from a grieving boyfriend and
- 33:31Speaker 2: began to view him as a possible person of interest.
- 33:35Speaker 2: I'm sure it's totally normal responses when a sixteen year
- 33:38Speaker 2: old finds out that their girlfriend or significant other was
- 33:42Speaker 2: brutally murdered at a house they were just at.
- 33:45Speaker 1: And he left her there, didn't force her to come
- 33:47Speaker 1: with it.
- 33:48Speaker 2: I mean, like, what are you expagining what you can't
- 33:52Speaker 2: even really like process that, you know what I mean? Now,
- 33:56Speaker 2: Matt was brought in for a formal interview regarding the
- 33:59Speaker 2: murder of his girlfriend, Cassie Stoddard.
- 34:03Speaker 1: During question, Matt walked investigators through the events of Friday night.
- 34:08Speaker 1: He explained that he had arrived at the house, you know,
- 34:11Speaker 1: he got there first, and that later their friends Brian
- 34:14Speaker 1: Draper and Tory Admic came over and watched part of
- 34:18Speaker 1: a movie before leaving. He described the repeated power outages
- 34:22Speaker 1: told the police that the dogs had been growling and
- 34:25Speaker 1: barking towards the basement stairs. Matt also shared that he
- 34:30Speaker 1: had wanted to stay with Cassie because she was nervous
- 34:32Speaker 1: about the power issues, but he wasn't able to. His
- 34:36Speaker 1: mom picked him up he went home. He then detailed
- 34:41Speaker 1: his activities on Saturday and confirmed that he had tried
- 34:44Speaker 1: to call Cassie but he was never able to reach her.
- 34:47Speaker 1: God that just kills me.
- 34:49Speaker 2: I know, fuck right, Elphi is his brain is far
- 34:57Speaker 2: fully formed. I mean I dropped that. Mom, Sola, it's fine.
- 35:00Speaker 2: You had alone the moment. It's fine. Police asked Matt
- 35:05Speaker 2: to take a polygraph test, and he agreed and passed.
- 35:09Speaker 2: With the test results, confirmation from his mother about picking
- 35:14Speaker 2: him up Friday night, and his phone records supporting his account,
- 35:17Speaker 2: investigators shifted their focus to other potential suspects.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Matt, you got lucky that things worked out well. Never
- 35:28Speaker 1: ever take a polygraph test, okay, and always have an attorney.
- 35:33Speaker 1: You got lucky that you weren't in Chicago or over
- 35:38Speaker 1: there in Massachusetts.
- 35:41Speaker 2: And that Tory and whatever his name is. I don't
- 35:45Speaker 2: remember their stupid Brian that they were idiots. So because
- 35:50Speaker 2: if they weren't, I do think that Matt would they
- 35:54Speaker 2: they would have put a lot of pressure on that kid.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you know.
- 35:58Speaker 1: At one point, Cassie's mom's boyfriend also became a person
- 36:02Speaker 1: of interest after his fingerprints were found at the house. However,
- 36:08Speaker 1: he was later cleared when it was established that his
- 36:10Speaker 1: fingerprints were there because he had previously worked on the
- 36:14Speaker 1: electrical in the home because he was an electrician.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Well, he got lucky too, he didn't, right.
- 36:21Speaker 1: And just you know, your headlines that you've added gave
- 36:25Speaker 1: me a capin moment. Oh really, I felt a little
- 36:28Speaker 1: bit of capin love.
- 36:30Speaker 2: I know, I'm not going to label him the slides,
- 36:32Speaker 2: but I love labeling all the headers. So that's the
- 36:36Speaker 2: closest I get to bringing her spirit into our shows now.
- 36:42Speaker 2: During Matt's interrogation, he answered questions about Brian and Tory.
- 36:47Speaker 2: He told investigators that he was closer friends with Tory
- 36:50Speaker 2: than with Brian. He explained that Cassie was also friends
- 36:55Speaker 2: with them, but not really especially close. Matt also shared
- 36:59Speaker 2: that before he and Cassie became a couple. Both Brian
- 37:03Speaker 2: and Tory had shown some interest in her. I mean
- 37:06Speaker 2: that's just teenager. They will literally be interested in anything
- 37:09Speaker 2: most of the time. Let's be honest.
- 37:11Speaker 1: I mean they would like the wind when it blows
- 37:13Speaker 1: a certain way. Tory had first been questioned at his
- 37:18Speaker 1: home on September twenty fourth, two thousand and six, with
- 37:22Speaker 1: his father Sean present. Detective Thomas and Gangsky conducted that interview.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Tory told them that he and Brian had gone to
- 37:30Speaker 1: Cassie's aunt and uncle's house on Friday, September twenty second
- 37:34Speaker 1: because they thought they were going to a party.
- 37:38Speaker 2: He said that after watching part of a movie and
- 37:41Speaker 2: realizing there was no party, they decided to return to
- 37:45Speaker 2: Pocatello to see a movie. And I'm sure it's better
- 37:48Speaker 2: than Kilbill too, Right, Let's find out what they went
- 37:51Speaker 2: and saw. Tory stated that they watched Pulse. Really really,
- 37:57Speaker 2: is that better than Kilbill too? I do not think so. However,
- 38:00Speaker 2: when detectives asked him about the movie he had supposedly
- 38:04Speaker 2: just seen two days earlier, he was unable to provide details.
- 38:10Speaker 2: He then told officers that after the movie, he and
- 38:13Speaker 2: Brian went back to his house, where Brian spent the nights.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Brian Draper was also questioned that evening, although his initial
- 38:23Speaker 1: interview was not recorded. During questioning, Brian told police that
- 38:27Speaker 1: after he and Tory left Cassie's aunt uncle's house, they
- 38:31Speaker 1: went to the movies. He said, the film they had
- 38:34Speaker 1: originally planned to see had already started by the time
- 38:36Speaker 1: they arrived in town, so they chose to watch Pulse instead.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Despite describing himself as a big movie buffo, Brian, Brian
- 38:47Speaker 1: too was unable to provide officers with the plot or
- 38:51Speaker 1: any meaningful details about the movie.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Listen, I've never seen Pulse, but by looking it up
- 39:00Speaker 2: it may, in fairness to them, it may not have
- 39:04Speaker 2: had much of a plot or meaningful details. But still
- 39:09Speaker 2: you should at least if you're a movie above and
- 39:12Speaker 2: even if you watch a shitty movie, you are going
- 39:14Speaker 2: to love talking shit about that movie.
- 39:18Speaker 1: So can you find out where they really were?
- 39:20Speaker 2: Right, right, losers?
- 39:23Speaker 1: Or so where they say they really were to your research?
- 39:29Speaker 2: So okay, yes? Like Tory, Brian stated that they had
- 39:34Speaker 2: purchased their tickets with cash. He also added that a
- 39:38Speaker 2: girl from school named Heather had been working at the
- 39:41Speaker 2: theater that night. And that they had spoken with her
- 39:43Speaker 2: a while. They had spoken with her while they were
- 39:46Speaker 2: there own, how convenient.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Police then brought Brian and Tory in for formal questioning
- 39:54Speaker 1: on September twenty fifth. Both sixteen year olds were taken
- 39:58Speaker 1: to the police station with their parents present. During the
- 40:01Speaker 1: initial interviews, Brian and Torrey's accounts were pretty similar, including
- 40:08Speaker 1: the fact that neither of them could tell anything about
- 40:11Speaker 1: the movie that they supposedly saw.
- 40:15Speaker 2: Now On Tuesday, September twenty sixth, two thousand and six,
- 40:19Speaker 2: Brian was brought in for another interview. His parents accompanied
- 40:26Speaker 2: him to the station, but they were not present in
- 40:28Speaker 2: the interview room. Brian was read his Miranda rights, which
- 40:33Speaker 2: is my good bride rye, and agreed to speak with
- 40:37Speaker 2: officers without an attorney. Such a little genius, aren't they
- 40:43Speaker 2: so smart?
- 40:44Speaker 1: Well, their parents aren't much better. He initially repeated the
- 40:51Speaker 1: same account, stating that he and Tory had gone to
- 40:54Speaker 1: hang out with Matt and Cassie, became bored and then
- 40:57Speaker 1: went to see the late showing of Poulse What. An
- 41:01Speaker 1: officer told Brian he did not believe that story. Brian
- 41:05Speaker 1: quickly changed his version of events.
- 41:09Speaker 2: Oh wow, what a plot twist. This is like m
- 41:11Speaker 2: Night Shyamalan over here.
- 41:13Speaker 1: He said that he and Tory had changed into dark clothing,
- 41:17Speaker 1: put on gloves, and gone out to burglarize cars, right.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Because that's better. You couldn't even said you were like
- 41:30Speaker 2: making out and banging some assumption. You're like, nope, we
- 41:33Speaker 2: were definitely committing a felony crimes.
- 41:36Speaker 1: Uh huh, I would get better. Brian said they didn't
- 41:40Speaker 1: find anything of value, so they didn't steal anything.
- 41:42Speaker 2: Oh so it's not illegal, right.
- 41:44Speaker 1: And he said, well, we only said we went to
- 41:47Speaker 1: a movie to cover up what we were really doing.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Bravo, Brian, Bravo. Oh wait, that's toy. I'm sorry, Bravo. Tory, Bravo. No, no, Brian,
- 42:00Speaker 2: Now that's Brian's claim. I'm sorry. I get them all
- 42:02Speaker 2: mixed up because now that I know what they look like,
- 42:05Speaker 2: it switches me up right. Oh my gosh. Now, when
- 42:11Speaker 2: officers asked what part of town they had been in
- 42:14Speaker 2: while going through cars, Brian said he did not remember.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Oh my goodness. Detectives again told him they did not
- 42:23Speaker 2: believe his story. Brian insisted he was telling the truth.
- 42:27Speaker 2: He was not arrested that day. And left with his
- 42:30Speaker 2: parents after agreeing to take a polygraph test the following day. Also,
- 42:35Speaker 2: remember he was an inspiring screenwriter. He can't even come
- 42:39Speaker 2: up with anything exactly.
- 42:42Speaker 1: Later that same day, a detective went to the Draper
- 42:45Speaker 1: residence with consent from Brian and his parents. The detective
- 42:49Speaker 1: searched Brian's bedroom for potential evidence connected to the crime scene,
- 42:54Speaker 1: including gloves. During the search, officers found a knife sheath,
- 42:58Speaker 1: but no knife, and when they questioned Brian about it,
- 43:03Speaker 1: he said it belonged to a friend and claimed the
- 43:06Speaker 1: friend likely had the knife that went with it.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Okay, sure, God, Brian's an idiot. These are criminal masterminds.
- 43:20Speaker 1: They do need to tune in more to TCWT to NO.
- 43:24Speaker 1: I'm glad they got caught. They were stupid and they
- 43:26Speaker 1: deserved it.
- 43:27Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 43:28Speaker 1: I've seen the Italian job Lady in Gray so many times.
- 43:32Speaker 2: We own it now. On Wednesday, September twenty seventh, my birthday,
- 43:38Speaker 2: Brian returned for a third interview. It was expected that
- 43:43Speaker 2: he would take the polygraph test he had agreed to
- 43:46Speaker 2: the day before. Before the test began, Brian his parents
- 43:50Speaker 2: asked for privacy and officers allowed them time alone.
- 43:55Speaker 1: When they came back into the interview room. Brian's parents
- 43:59Speaker 1: appeared visibly upset. Brian was read his rights again and
- 44:05Speaker 1: agreed to answer questions. Both of his parents remained present
- 44:09Speaker 1: for this interview.
- 44:11Speaker 2: Elfie, did the cops over pay buying a used polygraph
- 44:14Speaker 2: machine and they needed to justify its existence? I think
- 44:18Speaker 2: so so many polygraphs happening a small town.
- 44:22Speaker 1: They got to get their money's.
- 44:23Speaker 2: Worth right now. Brian's old officers that he and Tory
- 44:28Speaker 2: had unlocked a door at Cassie's aunt and uncle's house
- 44:31Speaker 2: during the earlier visit so they could return later and
- 44:35Speaker 2: scare Cassie and Matt. He said they came back wearing
- 44:39Speaker 2: black clothes, mask and gloves, and that they were both
- 44:42Speaker 2: carrying knives.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Okay, my first thought is, if you're going to scare somebody,
- 44:49Speaker 1: why do you need knives?
- 44:51Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I mean, I'm just ask intechkay, Brian.
- 44:59Speaker 1: Brian stated that after Matt left, he and Tory went upstairs.
- 45:04Speaker 1: He then claimed that Tory attacked and stabbed Cassie. Ryan
- 45:10Speaker 1: said he initially thought Tory and Cassie were just trying
- 45:14Speaker 1: to scare him, and that he was shocked when he
- 45:17Speaker 1: realized Tory was actually stabbing her.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Sure, Brian Sure. He insisted that he never touched or
- 45:28Speaker 2: stabbed Cassie that night. Brian also told investigators that he
- 45:33Speaker 2: was afraid of Tory, saying that earlier that same day,
- 45:37Speaker 2: before coming to the station with his parents, Tory had
- 45:41Speaker 2: threatened to kill him if he told anyone the truth.
- 45:45Speaker 2: Brian maintained that he was being honest. Finally, way to go,
- 45:50Speaker 2: Brian bravo and offered to take officers to the location
- 45:54Speaker 2: where he and Tory had disposed of items from the
- 45:57Speaker 2: night of September twenty second and six.
- 46:03Speaker 1: I am sorry, Betty, I am glad you're getting sedated
- 46:07Speaker 1: for your dental surgery as somebody who just went through
- 46:10Speaker 1: dental stuff. Yes, and you know what, if you're going
- 46:15Speaker 1: in the morning and you have AirPods or headphones, LAMA
- 46:18Speaker 1: will be on reading more of Laura Owen Shenanigan's it
- 46:22Speaker 1: helps with dental surgery in sedation. Just telling you.
- 46:29Speaker 2: We're out of five dental patients recommend it.
- 46:33Speaker 1: There are aspects of the interrogations that deserve discussion. Okay,
- 46:38Speaker 1: And to be clear, this is not about defending Brian
- 46:42Speaker 1: or Tory.
- 46:43Speaker 2: No, fuck those guys. Fuck them.
- 46:45Speaker 1: It's about laying out what happened and examining how it unfolded.
- 46:52Speaker 2: The day Tory was arrested, he told detectives that he
- 46:56Speaker 2: wanted an attorney and did not wish to speak without
- 46:59Speaker 2: one present. Finally, finally, his father, Sean, asked if he
- 47:04Speaker 2: could speak privately with his son. Officers agreed, and they
- 47:08Speaker 2: were taken to a room that was not being recorded now.
- 47:11Speaker 2: After that conversation, they returned to the interrogation room, believing
- 47:16Speaker 2: the interview was over because Tory had invoked his right
- 47:19Speaker 2: to an attorney. I don't know why why you would
- 47:23Speaker 2: think that. Yeah.
- 47:26Speaker 1: However, the recording continued and detectives kept talking. They explained
- 47:32Speaker 1: why Tory was being charged and told him it'll eat
- 47:36Speaker 1: you up. It'll only get worse, my friend, it will
- 47:40Speaker 1: eat you up. Now. Sean repeatedly stated that he believed
- 47:45Speaker 1: they needed an attorney. Detectives continued pressing, telling Tory that
- 47:50Speaker 1: they knew he was involved and that someone else had
- 47:54Speaker 1: already implicated him. Shawn then told his son that if
- 47:58Speaker 1: asked his son, if or told us, then if any
- 48:01Speaker 1: of this was true, he needed an attorney. Tory responded yes,
- 48:07Speaker 1: agreeing that he needed an attorney, not that he was guilty,
- 48:11Speaker 1: but that he needed an attorney. Detectives later characterized that
- 48:15Speaker 1: yes as an agreement that their statements were all correct
- 48:22Speaker 1: instead of a renewed request for counsel because everything said
- 48:27Speaker 1: during that exchange was abso frecolutely used against him.
- 48:31Speaker 2: That's right. They can and will use it against you.
- 48:36Speaker 2: It's in the whole saying there's no ore, might, nope
- 48:39Speaker 2: and will. Now there are legitimate questions about how that
- 48:45Speaker 2: interaction was handled. Based on available records, there are concerns
- 48:50Speaker 2: about how the situation was presented and how statements were interpreted.
- 48:55Speaker 2: Reviewing the full interrogation footage would provide clearer context, but
- 48:59Speaker 2: one we don't have that, but we will be revisiting
- 49:03Speaker 2: this in the future here in the story, so put
- 49:07Speaker 2: a pin on that.
- 49:08Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Tory was not aware that Brian was back at the
- 49:13Speaker 1: police station. After speaking with investigators, Brian, accompanied by his
- 49:18Speaker 1: father and officers, led them to Blackrock Canyon. There, he
- 49:23Speaker 1: showed them where the items from the night of September
- 49:26Speaker 1: twenty second had been buried, and.
- 49:29Speaker 2: Leading Gray asked how long did it take Toy to
- 49:31Speaker 2: say Brian did it? It was? What like a whole
- 49:34Speaker 2: or the other way around. Brian is Tory the other
- 49:36Speaker 2: way around? Like a whole? Two days?
- 49:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it'll it'll take we'll get to Tory's but yeah,
- 49:43Speaker 1: Toy doesn't speak as much as Brian. Yeah, Tory's mother
- 49:47Speaker 1: does the talking.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Now. Officers recovered a number of items from the sites.
- 49:54Speaker 2: Oh shit, look at that knife, oh, Michael, and look
- 49:57Speaker 2: at that massifying Oh that's horrifying. These stupid idiots. And
- 50:04Speaker 2: they found two dagger style knives with sheeths, a silver
- 50:08Speaker 2: and black handled knife with a smooth blade, and a
- 50:12Speaker 2: folding survival style knife that had a smooth blade with
- 50:16Speaker 2: a serray edge at tip. They also found a sony videotape,
- 50:22Speaker 2: a box of matches, a melted bottle of peroxide, partially
- 50:27Speaker 2: burned notebook paper, a singed multicolor mask, a red and
- 50:33Speaker 2: white mask that's in the picture there, that's horrifying, one
- 50:37Speaker 2: black glove, a pair of Puma gloves, a pair of
- 50:40Speaker 2: blue Latex gloves, a pair of fingerless workout gloves, a
- 50:44Speaker 2: black Calvin klined shirt, a black Hagar shirt, a white
- 50:48Speaker 2: and gray sock, and a piece of black cord. So
- 50:51Speaker 2: not only were they just bad at this, they're also
- 50:55Speaker 2: bad at setting things on fire. So okay, good.
- 50:58Speaker 1: Job they had peroxide. It was about a smidge in
- 51:02Speaker 1: the bottle and they thought that was going to be enough.
- 51:04Speaker 2: To catch that on what idiots?
- 51:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Brian was arrested and taken to the Bangkok Counting Jail.
- 51:12Speaker 1: After securing him and recovering the items that had been
- 51:15Speaker 1: burned and buried, officers turned their attention to locating Tory.
- 51:22Speaker 2: Now, Tory had not gone to school that day. I
- 51:27Speaker 2: imagine not either way, I probably wouldn't be going to
- 51:30Speaker 2: school either. Detectives went to his father, Sean's workplace, and
- 51:35Speaker 2: asked that Tory be brought to the station. Sean agreed,
- 51:39Speaker 2: but only after keeping a previously scheduled meeting with a
- 51:43Speaker 2: law firm that had been referred to him through prepaid legal.
- 51:51Speaker 1: Yeah. Sean met his wife, Shannon, and Tory at the
- 51:55Speaker 1: attorney's office. They paid for a consultation, but did not
- 52:00Speaker 1: formally retained the firm at that time, as they were
- 52:03Speaker 1: waiting for the other attorney who had been recommended, who
- 52:06Speaker 1: would be there the next day. The attorneys did advise
- 52:10Speaker 1: them not to speak with police, and told Tory that
- 52:14Speaker 1: if he did, he should request a public defender. They
- 52:19Speaker 1: even went so far as suggested which public defender they
- 52:23Speaker 1: believed was the best.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Right, keep your mouth shut. I know the mask is horrific.
- 52:30Speaker 2: That that's the lasting she saw. It was just awful,
- 52:33Speaker 2: these two ass hats. Now, despite that advice, when detectives
- 52:37Speaker 2: called and instructed them to come to the station, Sean
- 52:41Speaker 2: and Shannon brought Tory in. At this point, they did
- 52:45Speaker 2: not know that Brian had already implicated Tory and led
- 52:48Speaker 2: investigators to buried evidence. Tory was arrested and did not
- 52:55Speaker 2: return home with his parents. So it's not great for them,
- 53:02Speaker 2: It's not.
- 53:03Speaker 1: Brian was later question for a fourth time. He was
- 53:06Speaker 1: read as Miranda Rights again and agreed to speak, even
- 53:09Speaker 1: though his parents were not present. Officers told him they
- 53:13Speaker 1: were unable to reach them. Brian stated he would answer
- 53:17Speaker 1: questions anyway. He initially maintained the previous version of events,
- 53:23Speaker 1: insisting that he had not touched or stabbed Cassie and
- 53:27Speaker 1: that Tory alone had attacked her.
- 53:31Speaker 2: After confirmed questioning, Brian changed his account. He admitted that
- 53:36Speaker 2: he had stabbed Cassie several times in the legs and
- 53:40Speaker 2: chests because Core he told him he needed to stab
- 53:43Speaker 2: her as well. Brian said Tory told him that stabbing
- 53:47Speaker 2: her was not enough and that they needed to kill her.
- 53:50Speaker 2: What a freaking hero he is. I'm not trying. I'm
- 53:54Speaker 2: not as bad as the other guy.
- 53:55Speaker 1: I'm not the utter I did at all. I was
- 53:57Speaker 1: just there. At that point, Bryan stopped the interview and
- 54:01Speaker 1: asked to see his parents. Because he was a minor
- 54:04Speaker 1: and he had the right to request her parent or
- 54:06Speaker 1: an attorney. The interview was terminated.
- 54:10Speaker 2: Brian Draper and Tory Adam Adam, I can't say that
- 54:15Speaker 2: Adam sick. Adam mc yeah, I don't know anyway. Brian
- 54:18Speaker 2: and Tory, we're charged with first degree murder and conspiracy
- 54:21Speaker 2: to commit murder and the killing of Cassie Stoddard and Elbuffy.
- 54:26Speaker 2: If you're listening, can you please com lne some outside.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Thanks now. It might seem like this is where the
- 54:32Speaker 1: story begins to wrap up, but it wasn't. Investigators still
- 54:36Speaker 1: had an extensive amount of work ahead of them. Building
- 54:40Speaker 1: a case strong enough to secure a conviction would require
- 54:44Speaker 1: thorough evidence review, forensic analysis, and careful preparation. Because Cassie
- 54:50Speaker 1: deserved nothing less than a complete and relentless.
- 54:54Speaker 2: Pursuit of the truth monthing didn't or that she does.
- 54:58Speaker 2: As questioning con and you, both Brian and Tory began
- 55:02Speaker 2: shifting responsibility onto the other, as usually that's how it goes,
- 55:07Speaker 2: each attempting to minimize his own role. Brian described Tory
- 55:13Speaker 2: as the primary perpetrator. Tory, in turn claimed Brian was
- 55:17Speaker 2: the most responsible for the murders and the stabbings and
- 55:22Speaker 2: all the really horrific stuff. Yeah.
- 55:26Speaker 1: What followed was a back and forth of blame, each
- 55:28Speaker 1: trying to distance him sell from what had been done
- 55:31Speaker 1: to Cassie.
- 55:33Speaker 2: About three months after Brian was arrested, his parents gave
- 55:36Speaker 2: an interview, and we have a clip along with a
- 55:39Speaker 2: clip of a phone call between Brian and his mother.
- 55:44Speaker 2: So let's listen to this because I haven't heard of it.
- 55:48Speaker 5: Brian didn't want us to know how much painting was in,
- 55:52Speaker 5: and he kept that very very separate from our life
- 55:57Speaker 5: with him and the family's life with him. He just
- 56:02Speaker 5: didn't want us to know how much pain he was in.
- 56:05Speaker 7: That's the thing that kept us up at the most
- 56:08Speaker 7: for the longest amount of time, is trying to find
- 56:11Speaker 7: trying to remember something that we missed. We had outed
- 56:20Speaker 7: Brian at birth. When I think about our relationship and
- 56:26Speaker 7: how strong of a relationship we had with Brian, and
- 56:30Speaker 7: how good of a relationship we had with Brian.
- 56:40Speaker 8: If you walked into our house back then, we were normal,
- 56:50Speaker 8: And why we didn't recognize that we had.
- 56:56Speaker 7: Such a problem h is horrific and something we still
- 57:06Speaker 7: cannot bear.
- 57:16Speaker 2: I mean that's tough. Mm hm oh.
- 57:23Speaker 1: Hello hello.
- 57:24Speaker 6: This goal is subject to monitoring and recording. I just
- 57:28Speaker 6: wish you would have talked to me about this before,
- 57:30Speaker 6: because if you had told me anything, anything, tell.
- 57:40Speaker 9: Me what I told you that I carefully.
- 57:47Speaker 3: You did.
- 57:48Speaker 4: Yeah, do you remember that?
- 57:53Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 57:54Speaker 2: Yeah, right, I'm sure that was a real conversation. Well wow, yeah.
- 58:09Speaker 1: So the crime lab was able to recover part of
- 58:13Speaker 1: the burned notebook paper found with the buried Adams. The
- 58:18Speaker 1: partially destroyed note read.
- 58:22Speaker 2: I read Brian is gonna to kill Cassie. Home alone.
- 58:26Speaker 2: Stap runs into toy. We murder Cassie is home alone. House,
- 58:32Speaker 2: Brian kills his on the back porch, his body on
- 58:36Speaker 2: the back porch. House Brian has and we will kill
- 58:40Speaker 2: her killing Matt. Oh just you guys, Medialy only would
- 58:45Speaker 2: have gotten some therapy.
- 58:48Speaker 1: They were going to kill Matt.
- 58:50Speaker 2: Too, Yeah, exactly like earlier. I mean, he was lucky
- 58:56Speaker 2: that the cops didn't just hone in on him. But
- 58:58Speaker 2: he was also very lucky because they very clearly, we're
- 59:02Speaker 2: train time, it's an hour late, very clearly we're planning
- 59:06Speaker 2: on it, doing it twice. But you know what, I
- 59:08Speaker 2: think they chickened out to be quite honest, because going
- 59:12Speaker 2: up against Cassie, they probably were like, oh, we're confident
- 59:15Speaker 2: in that.
- 59:15Speaker 1: Well hear what the plan was, and Matt did not participate.
- 59:20Speaker 1: Yeah you'll have to, Yeah.
- 59:22Speaker 2: You'll hear. Okay.
- 59:24Speaker 1: The wording was fragmented and difficult to follow, but it
- 59:28Speaker 1: clearly reflected violent intent. Detectives believe the notes suggested not
- 59:33Speaker 1: only plans involving Cassie, but also the possibility that Matt
- 59:38Speaker 1: would have been killed as well. And I think we
- 59:41Speaker 1: share it later. So remember when Matt said he went
- 59:45Speaker 1: and got back on the couch and decided not to
- 59:46Speaker 1: go downstairs. They were trying to get Matt to come downstairs.
- 59:51Speaker 2: So they oh, yeah, that's right, I forgot some I think.
- 59:55Speaker 1: It's them there. Yeah. I've read so much now and
- 59:58Speaker 1: gone down so many rabbit holes.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: I get it, I get it now. Investigators then turned
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: their attention to the sony videotape recovered from Black Rock Canyon. Initially,
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: it appeared blank, but after restoration, however, detectives sat down
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: to review it, unaware that they were about to watch
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: what amounted to the recorded inner thoughts of two deeply
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: disturbed teenagers. Brian and Tory had talked about writing a
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: screenplay and had filmed themselves frequently. What was on that
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: tape would become critical evidence, and in this clip we
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: hear Brian and Tory wanting to be famous.
- 1:00:43Speaker 9: They were sick, psygo basque.
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: Do I get pleasure of killing other people?
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: That sounds good?
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: Baby.
- 1:00:49Speaker 9: We're gonna go down in history.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: We're gonna be just like Screams, except real life Turtives.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: Okay, first of all, but Ryan, I just set a therapy.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: I didn't do anything wrong. You sounded way more excited
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: than him.
- 1:01:05Speaker 10: So hmm.
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: I have not listened to these tapes because I wanted
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: to save it.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: Oh just saying, oh boy, oh boy, how original these
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: two detective saw on that restored tape was chilling. It
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: was not just that Brian and Torrey had planned to
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: murder Cassie. It was that they had planned it and
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: filmed it themselves, talking about it. The recordings took place
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: at school, also in the car, and at one point
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: they even expressed concern that a teacher might see them
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: because they were recording in class. On the tape they say,
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: I'm sorry Cassie's family that she had to be the one.
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: Wait, these guys officers were forced to sit through the footage,
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: documenting every word and every detail, and as the video
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: continued and it became clear that it only grew more disturbing.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: On September twenty second, at nine to fifty three pm,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: after leaving Matt and Cassie's at the house, Bran and
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: Torrey recorded another video. Sitting in the car. They spoke
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: about what they described is the unfortunate task of killing
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: their two friends, and I think we have video of
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: that clip. Okay, maybe we're playing it later.
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: Oh later later, gotcha? Okay. They talked about knowing there
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: were multiple doors and mentioned that they had unlocked one.
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: They said they were nervous. In the same recording, they
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: casually discussed the band they were listening to. Thank Goodness,
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: they cleared it up, but it was something shitty knowing
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: these two so they had waited a long time for
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: this and told viewers to stay tuned. Don't you worry,
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: we will be playing all of this footage for you
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: later in the show. What a bunch of idiots.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: For investigators. Hearing those words in their own voices left
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: no question. What happened to Cassie was not impulsive. It
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: had been talked about, anticipated and recorded.
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: I mean, I think they're both garbage. I just want
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: that out there. I think they're both equally horrible to
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: have all this preparation for, however long recording yourself writing,
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: they're both they're both garbage.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: Oh both feet. You will find out what band you
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: will hear later.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: Dear, the chat needs to know what shitty band is it.
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: He's not a shitty band, oh man. What Investigators Lady
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: later learned is that Brian and Tory, upon returning to
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: the house, they attempted to lun Matt and Cassie downstairs
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: by making noise in the basement and manipulating the power,
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: but it did.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: Yeah, then they heard Matt Lee. Shortly after, Matt called Tory.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: If you remember, Toy whispered that he was in a
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: movie and would call him later. That was not true.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: He was not in the theater, guys. He was in
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: the basement with Brian, waiting for Cassie to be alone.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: Now. When Cassie did not go downstairs, Brian and Tory
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: went upstairs into the living room, where she was lying
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: on the couch wearing Halloween mask. They were unrecognizable to her,
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: which is just so awful. I don't know. Maybe it's
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: better she didn't actually see No, she.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: Didn't know it was her.
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: Those I don't know. They're both awful choices. I don't know.
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: I don't know which one would be worse. Anyway, Cassie
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: jumped up and asked who they were. She told them
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: she was going to kick there as I love that.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: I love it, I love that they even I admitted
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: that Brian and Torrey were armed with knives. They attacked her,
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: knocking her to the ground and continued stabbing her.
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: After the attack, they left the house and got into
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: Tory's car, driving back to Tory's home. Before leaving the area,
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: they filmed themselves again, because of course they did.
- 1:05:21Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: Once at Tory's house, they went into the garage, retrieved
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: a garbage bag, and placed their clothes, the knives, the
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: tapes and other items inside.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: They then drove to the black Rock Canyon area to
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: dispose of the evidence. The items remained buried there until
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: Brian later led police to the site. I mean, I'm
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: not going to like say their disposal was great, but
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: I'm surprised that they were able to think that through. Yeah,
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: to be quite honest, I'm a little surprised, but they
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: were still really dumb about it.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: They were so really dumb about it. Initially, Bran and
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: Tory were scheduled to beach tried together, their defense attorneys
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: requested separate trials due to potential conflicts and strategy, especially
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: since each was planning to blame the other.
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: Boy. Toy that face is not working for you, bro.
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: Yeh Yeah.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: In January of two thousand and seven, the judge granted
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: the motion. Bryan's trial was set for April and Toris
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: was scheduled for late May. Given that both were accusing
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: the other of being primarily responsible, separate trials were not surprising, guys.
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: No.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: While they awaited trial, investigators continued. Investigations continued on both sides.
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: Tory's family hired private attorneys rather than relying on a
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: court appointed.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: Defender now is instant as a standard. All jail calls
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: were recorded and the defense received copies. Okay, because they
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: say it every time you go to make a call,
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: answer a call. They're always saying it all the time,
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: right to avoid additional expense. Tory's mother, Shannon, listened to
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: and took notes on the recorded calls between both Brian
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: and his family and Tory and his own family. For
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: a parent, I do think that must have been an
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: incredibly painful task to hear both of them.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, I no two people guys and no
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: two families handle crisis the same way. Tory and his
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: family were instructed by their attorney not to discuss the
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: case at all during phone calls. Yes, according to reports,
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: Brian and his family did not follow that pattern, whether
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: because they were not given the same instructions or they
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: chose not to adhere to it because remember they had
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: a public defender.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: I mean, they are all going to tell you, don't
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: don't do it right, all right. I don't even think
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: a lawyer would encourage you to, even like you're making
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: it harder for them. You will make it harder for them,
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: that's sure. Now, While Reviewing the jail calls, Tory's mother, Shannon,
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: said she noticed that Brian's family discussed the case during
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: nearly every conversation with him. She also felt that they
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: were extremely vocal in their love and support for Brian.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: This perspective comes from Shannon's point of view, though, but
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: it had an impact on her, you know, it caused
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: her to question herself, her family and how they were
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: navigating the reality of the upcoming trial. And boy do
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: I wish I could listen to their phone calls too,
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: because I have thoughts. I think that he is still
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: manipulating them in jail, Like was he bringing it up
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: a lot with his parents? Like what how was the
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: conversations actually going, you know, And I'm not going to
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: knock anybody, listen. You are innocent until proven guilty. That's
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: a fact, even though we know it happened.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: But yeah, but.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: Family members, you know, when you're loved ones in jail,
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: you haven't been through the trial. You are jumping through
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: so many mental hoops true for innocence in them that
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: it does not surprise me that they were very vocal
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: in their love and support of this, because for this
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: to be all a big misunderstanding would be like a
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: miracle to them. So I mean, I don't really have
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: a problem with them loving and supporting him, but uh,
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: Yes, we can. Toy's parents believe that Brian's family understood
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: that prosecutors and defense teams would be listening to those
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: recorded calls, and that the conversations could help lay the
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: groundwork for Brian's defense. See during these calls, Brian and
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: his family reportedly continued placing blame on Tory and portraying
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: Brian as innocent.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: I'm curious of where Brian learned because it's interesting to
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: me that Brian was the first to squeal, the first
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: to point fingers, because they always say the first attack
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: gets the better end of the stick, right.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: You're gonna learn about Brian. Remember Brian was the troubled
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: one who had the MySpace page where you're gonna learn
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: a little bit more about mister Brian.
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: Oh, yes, yes, we were feel like Laura.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: Owens and maybe wasn't held accountable first.
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: Yes, I think that's very apparent. Now. The two families
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: handled the situation very differently. Outside of visiting and speaking
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: with their sons and in circumstances like this, that difference
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: in approach is entirely normal, like it's a whole No,
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: there's no I mean, I'm sure there's books written of
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: like what to do with your child's in.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: Geniob how emotions.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: There's all kind of stuff, and they're all case by case, right,
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: because every case is different, every situation is different, And
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: I doubt you're getting a lot of support by a
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: lot of people.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: Because Brydon's family appeared to appeared to compartmentalize what was happening.
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: While they supported their son and worked with his defense team,
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: they continued with their life, going up to dinner, seeing friends.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: Life in many ways was normal and moved forward for them.
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: Tori's parents handled it differently. Outside of going to work
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: and caring for their two other children, they were consumed
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: by Tori and his case. Their world narrowed to court dates,
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: legal strategy, and worry. I mean, as that's probably how
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: that would be for anyone. I think the other group
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: likes to live in little dolulu land if you ask me, yeah, I.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: Mean, but we're all human. We may think we know
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: how we would respond in a situation like this, but guys,
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: until we're living it, we truly don't know, because once
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: something kicks in, you have no idea how the endorphin
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: rush and all that's going to make you act.
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: You do not know.
- 1:12:22Speaker 5: M h.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: That is very true. Now. One detail Shannon shared in
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: her book, she wrote a book. We're going to talk
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: extensively about this book, The Guilty Innocent, stood out. After
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: Tory had been in jail for several days, his parents
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: visited him. Shannon noticed that his lips were extremely dry
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: and that he kept licking them. He appeared dehydrated. When
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: she asked him if he was okay, Tory told her
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: he was very thirsty and that he was only given
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: a cup of milk with breakfast and dinner.
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: So Shannon questioned a guard about why he was not
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: being given any water. The guard explained to her that
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: Tory had a sink in his sale attached to the
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: toilet and was expected to drink from that. For someone
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: familiar with Joel conditions that may see standard. But for
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: a sheltered Mormon teenager who had only ever gotten water
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: from a refrigerator or a bottle, it had never occurred
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: to him to use that sink.
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: Oh wow.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: After Shannon raised the concern, the guard explained it to
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: directly to Tory so he could access water. He literally,
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: it says, he was like, oh, he never thought to
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: even put I mean I grew up drinking out of
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: a water hose outside. You put water in your hand
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: and you make a little cup.
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: I mean it's two thousand and six. You know, the
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: kid at least drank out of his hand. Like It's
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: not like we barely had the filterard Mormon kids, we're
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: Brita Fielders even a thing yet, I don't know. I
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: don't know now. During the time awaiting trial, Tori was
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: placed on suicide watch. At one point. I was not
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: able to find similar information regarding Brian.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: Brian Draper stood trial first. It was a brief trial,
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: lasting just seven days. I was like, huh seven days.
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: Seven. During proceedings, prosecutors presented photographs of Cassie's lifeless body.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: The images were so difficult to view that several jurors
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: were visibly emotional and upset. Although numerous photos were entered
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: into evidence, the judge ruled that certain crime scene images
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: would be shown to the jury at a later time.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: They were not flashing them up on any big monitors.
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: Which is the more of a standard in the twe
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: the first century than before now. Detectives took the stand
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: and detailed the investigation. The recorded videos Brian and Tory
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: had made were played in court, along with the physical
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: evidence recovered from Black Rock Canyon and elsewhere. The jury
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: was confronted not only with what happened to Cassie, but
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: with the planning and recorded statements that preceded it, and
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: the boys's general discussion about killing a large number of people.
- 1:15:33Speaker 12: We're gonna go to the church over there, and we're
- 1:15:35Speaker 12: gonna call a girl a guy named Cassie and math
- 1:15:39Speaker 12: they're wrong, our friends, but we have to make sacrifices.
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: So I feel tonight was that your voice, Brian.
- 1:15:51Speaker 4: Itself?
- 1:15:51Speaker 9: That I feel like I want to kill someone?
- 1:15:57Speaker 13: I know?
- 1:15:57Speaker 9: Also, what the hell what to call a girl a guy?
- 1:16:03Speaker 13: Na?
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: I may have missed labeled deb I'm sure we'll hear
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: the other one.
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: Wow, that was Brian's voice the whole time, wasn't it?
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: I think it was? Oh, yeah, I had nothing to
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: deal with anything and was all Tory and yeah, Brian
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: needs to be running your mouth about everything, bro.
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: Now, an eighteen year old friend had testified that he
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: had gone with Brian and Tory to a local pawn
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: shop where knives, where the knives were purchased. That testimony
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: connected preparation to action.
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: Yeah, these boilers, so fucked uh. The medical examiner also
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: took the stand and stated that Cassie had been stabbed
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: with different knives, so even more thought in wanting to
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: use the different weapons that was completely unnecessary. However, though
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: he could not determine whether more than one person had
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: stabbed car and no medical examiner can do that anyway,
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: So you.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: Know, the state was unable to get its forensics expert
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: to conclusively state that more than one weapon was used
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: by more than one individual. Because of that, prosecutors relied
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: heavily on the videotapes that the teens had recorded. The
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: next segment became one of the most significant pieces of
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: evidence in the state's case for premeditation, and we're going
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: to hear in this clip Brian and Tory talk about
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: Cassie and how she is perfect.
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: Oh hopefully I labeled it right.
- 1:17:39Speaker 13: Shit back, HM, and your patient never getting paid off
- 1:17:50Speaker 13: because I missed his whole board.
- 1:17:51Speaker 6: So you got player.
- 1:17:53Speaker 12: I'll break down now, So I'm sorry.
- 1:17:58Speaker 3: I'm family she's perfect.
- 1:18:10Speaker 10: May Oh, I'm Brian. I didn't do anything. It was
- 1:18:21Speaker 10: all Torri. I would never.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: Douche.
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and talking about how she's perfect, apologizing to the
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: family and that she's gonna be the first one. Yeah mhm.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: Now, then the teens recorded another clip later, but we'll
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: play that clip here in a bit, as it is
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: important to a Tory's trial.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: In that. In the clip, Brian then talks about stabbing Cassie.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: It appears to be him confessing the killing Cassie and
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: stabbing her in the throat by man.
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: Yep, a whole lot of Brian talking. It sure was.
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: Yes, Now we're going to get Forry talking too. Well.
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: Okay. Now, After the state rested its case, the defense
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: called only one witness, doctor Bonnell, who testified regarding his
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: opinion about the nights. Why do we even bring this guy?
- 1:19:16Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: Accounts of his testimony described it as largely unremarkable. Oh boy,
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: oh boy. Brian's defense lasted approximately thirty minutes before resting.
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: Like what did they owe this guy a favor or
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: something like that? The lawyer does, like, I got one
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: for you, you remember, I gotcha. I'll tell you some
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: money like what.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: After about five hours of deliberation, on April seventeenth, two
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: thousand and seven, Brian was found guilty. As a verdict
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: was read, Cassie's family openly wet. Brian's parents, faced with
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: the reality of their son's action and recorded fantasies, were
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: visibly shaken, yet they continued to offer him emotional support.
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: I mean they are very religious people and something something
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: about forgiveness or whatever.
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: And they didn't abandon me.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: With one conviction secured, the Stoddard family turned their focus
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: to Tori's upcoming trial, hoping for the same outcome. Cassie's
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: grandfather reportedly said, one down, one to go, and I
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: do it's sex with They had to put like families
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: through more than one trial, but I very much like
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: how they did do them back to back instead of
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: like years later, you know, Like, Yeah, I'm surprised, to
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: be quite honest about that, but I am glad for them,
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: even though they had to go through it twice.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: Yeah. For Torris trial, Judge McDermott allowed to Glory to
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: leave the jail for one hour each week to meet
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: privately with his attorneys at their office to prepare his
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: attorneys petitioned the court to allow his parents, Sean and Shannon,
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: as well as his grandmother to attend those meetings, arguing
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: they could provide valuable assistance in his defense. The prosecution
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: opposed to this request, but the judge did granted.
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: I mean, that was definitely probably for a pale reasons.
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: So anyway, the court reason that Tory was still a
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: minor and that the presence of his parents and grandmother
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: could provide guidance he needed. These meetings marked the first
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: time since his arrest that his parents were able to
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: ask him direct questions about what happened that night. I
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: am interested, though, because usually if you're going to talk
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: to your lawyer and other people that are not lawyers,
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: such as your family's significant other whomever, are in the
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: room when you're talking with the lawyer, I'm pretty sure
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: that usually negates attorney client privilege, Like you forfeited that
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: because other people here. But I'm guessing since they're miners.
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: That's what I was reading is because they were miners.
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: That's the exception to that. And I'm guessing the prosecution
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: was arguing while he's being tried as an adult, right,
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: so that's also a fair argument. So yeah.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: Tory's parents believe that he would likely face some prison
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: time as an accomplice. However, they maintained that he did
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: not stab Cassie and said he never told them or
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: anyone else otherwise.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: The defense strategy focused on arguing that while Tory had
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: made poor decisions and said disturbing things on tape, he
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: was an aspiring director and screenwriter. They contended that much
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: of what appeared on the recordings was performance, except for
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: his comment about needing to quote get their act together
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: en quote. They framed that statement as the reaction of
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: a teenage boy who had just witnessed something traumatic and
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: was attempting to cover it up to avoid getting into trouble.
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: I'm sorry, but I don't really give shit if you're
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: a kid, wanted to rant.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: Millianth bloh no, and you can't cherry pick what was
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: acting in what was real? I'm sorry because guess what.
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: During Torri's trial, the state again played the same video
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: shown in Brian's trial, one portion recorded the day before
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: Cassie's murder. In this clip, you're going to hear about
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: is killing bad in its Tory, Let's hear them speaking.
- 1:23:53Speaker 11: Thought is wrong. The only thing that it's wrong about
- 1:23:59Speaker 11: is because it's breaking a law, and the law is
- 1:24:02Speaker 11: only wrong because there should be no odd against I
- 1:24:10Speaker 11: know it's the wrong thing, but hell, hell, you restrict
- 1:24:16Speaker 11: somebody from it, they're gonna want it more.
- 1:24:18Speaker 10: Really.
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: Oh wow, how philosophical. He is not only a future
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: screenwriter and director, also philosopher. Fucking idiot.
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: His mom talks about that in her book, that he
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: was just trying to have a philosophical.
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: Oh is that it?
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: Which one is whether or not standa Claus is real,
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: and whether or not God's real?
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: I mean, listen, these are all conversations everybody does have,
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: well not everybody, but many people do as they're not
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: when you hear the other anything, well no, no, but
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: I mean like these, you know, philosophic why is this?
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: And you know it's by having these conversations over several
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: years in a getting life experience, you know that you
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: pivot in change. But he is no genius. Sorry, Shannon,
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: all right, your kid's an idiot and he's dumb, okay,
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: and he would never have been a good screenwriter a director.
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: He was an original about anything. Anyway. Anyway, it's probably
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: my turn. Oh yeah it is. Sorry, I was distracted
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: thinking about his brilliant philosophical thinkings. Camp. I hope. I
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: wonder if you started a salon in prison anyway. In
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: that clip, Tory and Brian are heard saying there should
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: be no law against killing. It is deeply disturbing, especially
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: in light of what followed. Tory's parents still believe that
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: this is all acting and not real thoughts. Then we
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: have them saying they have to make sacrifices, so this
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: isn't real. You guys all pretend, but they just so
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: happened to like murdered a girl like fifteen minutes later.
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: It's right, yeah, now we're gonna hear about their sacrifices.
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: Yes, yes, oh goodness.
- 1:26:15Speaker 14: Time is nine fifty September twenty second, two thousand and six. Unfortunately,
- 1:26:25Speaker 14: we have the growing task of killing our two friends,
- 1:26:30Speaker 14: and they are right in a house just down the street.
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: We just talked to them.
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: We were there for an hour.
- 1:26:38Speaker 9: We checked out the whole house.
- 1:26:40Speaker 14: We know, there's lots of doors, there's lots of places
- 1:26:43Speaker 14: to hide. I locked the back doors.
- 1:26:48Speaker 13: That's all a lot.
- 1:26:49Speaker 12: Now we just gotta wait, and yeah, we're really nourished
- 1:26:56Speaker 12: right now. You know, we're ready. We're listening to the
- 1:26:59Speaker 12: Green It's rock. Were for this for a lot of time,
- 1:27:01Speaker 12: Floyd before.
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: We admit it's about to get real mad at me.
- 1:27:10Speaker 3: For a time, A long time.
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: Oh, pink Floyd. Also hell regional. I think Pink Floyd's oprated.
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: It's fine. Everybody can but yell sut.
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: There and say they have to make a sacrifice.
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: What jokers? What jokers? The defense?
- 1:27:33Speaker 6: Yeah, I.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: H The defense also planned to call multiple character witnesses,
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: emphasizing that Tory had no prior history of trouble. They
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: spent significant time debating whether Tory should testify so that
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: the jury could see him as a person, a sweet
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: young boy who wanted to be an actor and director
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: and a writer and a writer, rather than the person
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: through the lens of those recordings. Where did that accident.
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: Just come from? Ima is banned savage. We're gonna hate me.
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: I wasn't gonna say I choose. So here's my life
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: philosophy this year, guys, Do I want to be right
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: or happy? I'm choosing to be happy. Let Lama thing
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: what she wants about Pink Floyd.
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: I choose to be happy, just saying at this age
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: it's so clean.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: And y'all are the ones who said she was right
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: about everything. So I guess you're eating your words now, Okay,
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: let's go.
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: I don't think so. No, I'm just kidding, all right,
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: So let's see where am I hair? Okay? So, Torre's
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: defense team successfully petitioned the court to allow independent DNA
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: testing on the knives, shirts, and gloves recovered from black rocking,
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: and honestly, I don't know why they were wasting their money.
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: It was notably that the state had not conducted DNA
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: testing on those items. The prosecutions pass was that they
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: had the videotapes Brian's confession and his statements implicating Tory,
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: and that they believe that was sufficient. I mean, I
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: know about the fucking bitch about it.
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: Okay, do you hear what this person says you are
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: going to flip the table?
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: I'm sure, I'm sure. I'm just saying that the crime
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: lumps are busy. You only get so many things tested,
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: and I don't know if it was really necessary.
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: Oh boy, savage, it's fine. It works with my husband.
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: I choose to be happy, not right. It works with
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: Lama tail. Tory's trial began on May thirtieth, two thousand
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: and seven, he entered a play if not guilty, and
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: maintained that he was innocent of killing Cassie, continuing to
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: place responsibility on Brian.
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: During opening statements, the prosecutor read from the transcript of
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: the fitty recorded the night Cassie was killed, beginning with
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: Brian Draper's words, quote, we just killed Cassie, we just
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: lived Rose. The prosecutor told the jury that the video
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: continued and asserted that Tory had confessed to killing Cassie
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: the night he was arrested.
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: As discussed earlier, On the night of the arrest, Tory
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: invoked to his right to an attorney, and then after
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: that private conversation with his father, remember, they returned to
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: the interrogation room, where the detectives continued speaking to him,
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: and when his father said I think we need an attorney,
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: Tory responded yes. The state interpreted that yes as an
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: agreement with the detective statements, rather than a reaffirmation of
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: his request for counsel.
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: I mean, I know they're not happy about this, but
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: Tory has to say we want eloid. You have to
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: say the words can be like yes, I would like that. Please, Yes, no,
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: you got to say the words. Are these the founding
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: members of the in cell movement?
- 1:31:10Speaker 13: Right? O?
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: Yikes? Probably? Now where was I? Oh? Yes? In his
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: opening argument, the defense introduced information that had not been
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: emphasized during Brian's trial for many reasons, I'm sure. They
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: presented evidence of Brian's fascination with the Columbine massacre, including
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: that he had created a website dedicated to the perpetrators.
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: What a fanboy? Ridiculous. They also referenced Brian's involvement in
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: a plan during middle school to shoot up a school. Oh.
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: The defense argued that Brian had a long standing obsession
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: with violence, murder, and notoriety, and that he wanted to
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: be famous. What precious little Brian bry who would never
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: do anything wrong.
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: There's also, and I don't think it's in here, Brian
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: even went to like the middle school dance and walked
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: around where kids were sitting on the bleachers pretending to
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: have Oh I'm sureas and shit, oh my god, and
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: guess what the school did nothing about it?
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: Really so.
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: The defense also focused on the video clip that the
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: state relied on during opening statements. Prosecutors had referenced a
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: transcript that read we killed Cassie. The defense argued that
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: the wording and the actual the wording and that and
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: the actual recording was different. Now, guys, this next video
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: clip is difficult to hear, so we do want to
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: give a trigger warning for this segment. And you're also
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: gonna sadly need to pay close attention to this clip.
- 1:32:54Speaker 9: We just killed Cassie. We just left your house. This
- 1:32:57Speaker 9: is not a fucking joke. After and Bro, I saw
- 1:33:01Speaker 9: her lifeless body just disappeared. Dude, I could have killed
- 1:33:06Speaker 9: cassieh fuck. That felt like, I mean, well by so bad.
- 1:33:18Speaker 10: Hmm.
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: Interesting, I didn't hear that. We actually it sounded like
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: it was like a uh well, videotapes, right, they did
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: a little thing. But he clearly Brian clearly says I
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: killed Cassie.
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: A few moan eyes watched her. Tory never says any
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: of that. I will agree to that. Tory's attorney Aaron, Oh, sorry,
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: not my part.
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: I know that's okay. Torri's attorney, Aaron Thompson directed the
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: jury's attention to the exact language use. He emphasized that
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: at the beginning of the clip, Brian says just killed Cassie.
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: Not we just killed Cassie. Thompson pointed out that Brian
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: go on to say he stabbed Cassie in the throat,
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: while Tory does not make a statement claiming he had
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: killed her. Tory can be heard saying he is shaking
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: and later saying they need to quote get our act together,
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: but he does not make a direct statement about killing Cassie.
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: I don't think that actually matters.
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: But the prosecution's case against Tory closely mirrored the case
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: presented against Brian. There was no additional direct physical evidence
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: tying Tory to the murder beyond the videotapes and Brian's
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: confession in statements implicating him. However, Tory's defense strategy was
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: very different. Unlike Brian's defense, which called only one witness,
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: Tory's attorney planned to present multiple witnesses to show the
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: jury who Toy was as a person. Their position was
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: that he had lied in made terrible decisions, but that
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: he did not kill Cassie.
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: Okay, okay, I don't believe that for one second now.
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: During the state's presentation of its case, Tory's parents received
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: unexpected news the items sent out for DNA testing, including
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: the knives shirts and gloves from black Rock Cannon had
- 1:35:19Speaker 2: been reported lost in transit. Now, after numerous phone calls,
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: it was discovered that the DNA lab had mistakenly shipped
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: the package back to itself instead of returning it to
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: the defense, and the evidence was eventually located. Now, I
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: don't know if we go into this later or not,
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: but I'm going to go with it was a whole, big,
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: nothing burger. I can tell you that, because otherwise there
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: would have been a good appeal about it. So wow.
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: What became significant next involved the blood evidence. The state
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: had not originally conducted DNA testing on the items, the
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: defense had successfully, you know, made the movement for the
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: motion fore testing, and the state was aware of the
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: results when detectives were called to the stand. In Tory's trial,
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: differences begin to emerge, particularly in how the blood evidence
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: was described compared to Brian's trial.
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: When the nine one one call was made the day
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: Cassie was found, her aunt told dispatch that Cassie was
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: covered in blood, She's been stabbed thirty freaking times. She
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: reported blood in multiple areas of the house, and described
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: blood spatter throughout the scene that Cassie had clearly fought back.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: Yet during Toy's trial, the state presented a different tone
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: regarding the blood evidence. When the prosecutor asked one of
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: the detectives, how much blood did you observe during your
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: time in the house, the detective responded that he notice
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: small amounts of blood and was surprised by the lack
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: of it.
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: Doesn't even any sense. That doesn't make any sense at all,
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: So that's weird, okay.
- 1:37:08Speaker 4: Now.
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: During cross examination, the detective was pressed on that statement.
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: He continued to downplay the amount of blood, and eventually
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: said he was not in charge of processing the crime
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: scene and could not speak in detail about blood spatter
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: or the extent of it. The contrast between the initial
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: nine to one to one description and the testimony at
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: trial raised serious questions. I don't know if it raised
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: any serious questions. All right, this is just them just
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: rest and all these everywhere.
- 1:37:38Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: But over the same weekend, the defense received a call
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: from the prosecution asking them to come to the office
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: to discuss an offer. Given the testimony so far and
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: the fact that Brian had already been found guilty, Tory's
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: parents could only imagine what was coming a plea deal.
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: When they arrived, they were told it was not an offer,
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: but a warning. The prosecution said they had discovered additional
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: evidence against Tory and would introduce it if the defense
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: called character witnesses. The evidence involved pornographic material found on
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: the family's home computer under a Tory's profile. The profiles
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: on the computer were not password protected. Now I will
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: say that this did happen. This is fucking bullshit, but
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: it was also the Times of two thousand and six a.
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: Way to use see what they're describing as pornographic.
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sure as you are. Owen, sexy picture next
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: to a horse.
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: Disrupted the defense strategy. Additionally, it initially it was described
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: as simply as pornographic materials, something not uncommon for teenage boys. However,
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: it was later revealed that the images involved new teenage
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: males four to six photographs. So the defense attorney believed
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: that if homosexual pornography was introduced they're Mormons, it could
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: overshadow the character witnesses and influence how jurors perceived Tori,
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: not for being a murderer because he liked to look
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: at Dix.
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: They're not wrong, The defense attorney's absolutely not wrong.
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: He's not that is just insaneity.
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: It is insane. It is insane. And the same happened
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: with Michael Peterson, the Saracase guy. Right, Oh my god,
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: they made so much a big fuss about him being bisexual.
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: They couln't even wrap their fucking heads around it. Like
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: somebody listen, like that would have been like headline news
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: in two thousand and six, it would have been. The
- 1:39:43Speaker 2: defense is not wrong. I mean, honestly, though, this kid
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: is already fucked all right.
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: I had a son in two thousand and six that
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: was gay. I get it, I get it. But to
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: not well any character witnesses.
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: It dirty of the prosecution to do this's what. They
- 1:40:02Speaker 2: didn't need to do this. Well, they had a slamd
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: on case, all right. They didn't need to be this shitty. Okay,
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: you didn't need to do that. And it's crazy, all right,
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: So he stated, I'm sorry. The state characterized the material
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: as a late discovery. Oh. The defense later learned that
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: the prosecution had possessed the material for approximately six weeks,
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: based on the day it had been copied to a
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: disc Toy's parents asked their attorneys to file emotion to
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: exclude the evidence due to timing, but the senior attorney declined, well,
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: that's bullshit. They were told the material was relevant because
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: it went to character. I don't know how that's relevant.
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: It's a character.
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: I have to tell you. Aaron Thompson was like the
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: junior attorney, but the older senior you're gonna hear lighter.
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: He's oh, let's go well hat I mean.
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: He's a piece of shit.
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: It's also important to note that both Brian and Torrey's
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: families were Mormon, and Pocatello has a significant Mormon population,
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: a factor the defense believed rightly, so that could affect
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: how such evidence was received by a jury.
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: Up, there's a section missus sorry, I was okay.
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: There's a section that somehow deleted. So the DNA evidence
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: did come back somehow I deleted it. Only evidence found
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: on the items was Brian's. There was none of Tory's
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: DNA on any of the clothes, the gloves or anything.
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: And when they were asked why the fingernail clippings were
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: not clipped or DNA tested from Cassie, the forensic person said,
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: because nothing significant ever comes back from fingernail clippings.
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: She's a little crap that's sed. I don't know if
- 1:42:08Speaker 2: his DNA not being over anything really. I mean, also
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: we're talking to day a thousand and six DNA he has.
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: I mean, he just doesn't matter. Honestly, if I was
- 1:42:18Speaker 2: hearing this trial, it wouldn't matter to me either. I mean,
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: we know way more about DNA according to forensic files.
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: I mean, DNA has been groundbreaking technology for like fifteen
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: years according to them. So I don't know if it
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: really means a whole lot, but it wouldn't be enough
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: to be like, oh, exonerate him, exonerate No, no, not
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: at all now. While Brian and Tory were tried separately,
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: when it came time for sentencing, Judge McDermott scheduled their
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: hearings together, assigning each team his own day in court.
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: During the sentencing phase, both it's called witnesses who testified
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: about the Boyce's character and why they believed they deserved
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: a second chance. I know you brought this up to
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: me when you were writing this, and I thought about
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: it after we had talked, and I do think like
- 1:43:14Speaker 2: having the sentencing together, they're only putting the family and
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: friends one time, you know, so at that point it
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: doesn't really matter overall in this case whether they were
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: sentenced separately or together. But I can see only wanting
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: to put the family and friends through this one time
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: because I'm sure it was awful to hear. Oh, I'm sure,
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: I'm sure it was so so sad.
- 1:43:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: Now, during Tori's portion of the hearing, the prosecution now
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: decided to introduce the pornographic images from the family's computer. Wow,
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: with the detective acknowledging they could not prove who had
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: downloaded the images. I mean that's true, Still, the state
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: presented them. A forensic psychologist also testified, stating that Brian
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: would pose a medium to moderate threat to society even
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: if medicated.
- 1:44:15Speaker 2: That was during Brian's portion, Medium to moderate. I mean,
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: perhaps probably a little bit higher than that, but okay, Yeah.
- 1:44:24Speaker 2: Then came victim impact statements. Cassie's grandfather, Paul, addressed the court. First.
- 1:44:31Speaker 2: He acknowledged that witnesses had described Tory as a good person,
- 1:44:36Speaker 2: but said something had gone wrong. He told Tory that
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: he made this choice and that he and his family
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: would have to live with it. Cassie's sisters spoke directly
- 1:44:47Speaker 2: to Tory's family, saying they had denied his role in
- 1:44:51Speaker 2: her sister's murder. She then addressed Tory, telling him he
- 1:44:56Speaker 2: chose to leave Cassie dead in the house and that
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: there was own one true victim, to which yes, girl Yes.
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: On August twenty fifth, two thousand and seven, Judge McDermott
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: asked both teens if they wished to speak before sentencing.
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: Brian read a prepared statement apologizing for not stopping the
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: murder and said he was not worthy of forgetgiveness though
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: was what he desired. Okay, but yet he admits to
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: the police and on tape that he did stabber in
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: the neck.
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: But ye, okay, yeah, I think it's none from me.
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: Tory was who attempted to read from a prepared statement,
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: was overcome with emotion and began crying, sobbing, gagging, and
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: he was unable to finish.
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: There's Buffy, Hi Boa we're talking about earlier. Oh, he
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: did admit to being gay in the whole of documentary.
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: I've heard that to you, but I haven't watched it yet.
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: I couldn't include that.
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: Let's see. The state requested life without parole for both.
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: Judge McDermott sentenced each to thirty years fixed plus an
- 1:46:08Speaker 2: indeterminate life sentence for conspiracy for our first degree murder.
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: Both were sentenced to life without the possibility of parole
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: at the Idaho State Correctional Institution.
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: Following day after their sentencing, Brian and Torrey were transported
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: together to the Idaho State Correctional Institution in Boise. According
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: to the transporting officer, the two set next to each
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: other and talked during the drive. They reportedly asked if
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: he could just let them go, referring to themselves as
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: just a.
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: Couple of stupid kids on they are stupid.
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: The officer later stated it almost felt like a reunion
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: and that they said they did not hold hard feelings
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: towards one another. He also recalled them remarking that three
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: days of their lives had affected the rest of their life.
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: Lives stupid now. Tory filed his first appeal in September
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: twenty ten. Brian filed his in April twenty eleven. Both
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: appeals were denied, which is no surprise nice denied, and
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: their convictions were upheld. Brian later had his conspiracy conviction
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: vacated due to erroneous jury instructions, but his murder conviction
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: remained intact interesting.
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: In twenty fifteen, Tory was granted a post conviction relief hearing.
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: He argued that character witnesses could have changed the outcome
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: of his trial, and that his attorneys had chosen not
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: to call them against his parents' wishes, bro.
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: That was no way and would any of the help.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: That request was denied denied. His appeal to the Idaho
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: Supreme Court in twenty seventeen was rejected rejected.
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: In twenty eighteen, Tory filed a federal writ of habeas corpus,
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: arguing that his appeal had been denied on a theory
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: not presented to the jury, and that he was entitled
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: to a new sentencing hearing under the Miller and Montgomery decisions,
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: which held that mandatory life without parole sentences for juveniles
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: are unconstitutional and that youth must be reconsidered. Federal Judge
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: Dale denied the writ in twenty nineteen. An appeal followed,
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: and his sentence was upheld in March twenty twenty two,
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: which is saying a lot, because let me tell you what,
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: there were a bunch of kids that were like on
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: death row and shit, and that all got moved down
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: to life, so they haven't changed this. That's interesting.
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: The Startered family filed a civil lawsuit against the school
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: district in twenty ten, but it was dismissed on the
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: grounds that the actions of Brian and Tory were not foreseeable.
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: They also filed a civil lawsuit against Brian and Torrey's
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: state families. The limited information is available about the outcome
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: beyond reports that a statement settlement was closed.
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: Now during research, it emerged during research into this case
- 1:49:14Speaker 2: that we were doing. It emerged that Tory's mother wrote
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: a book, Shannon The Guilty Innocent in twenty twelve. In
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: the preface, she recounts sitting in an attorney's office after
- 1:49:26Speaker 2: Tory's arrest, with an attorney reportedly suggested that because they
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: had two other children, they should consider focusing on them
- 1:49:34Speaker 2: instead of Tory. I mean, I mean, it may not
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: have been kind to hear that, but also he was
- 1:49:41Speaker 2: basically saying like, yeah, your boy's fucked, Okay, let's move on.
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: He was basically saying, forgetting it.
- 1:49:47Speaker 2: Be there, be there if you want to be there.
- 1:49:50Speaker 2: But there's no there's no seiving your kid in this scenario,
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: which is not going to happen.
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: Well, guess what Shannon does, now what is Shannon? In
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: her book, she also places some of the responsibility for
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: Cassie's murder on Matt Beckham's parents for not allowing Matt
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: to stay the night in leaving Cassie alone in a
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: house where the power had been going out. Where do
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: we think her son learned it? She the boss of
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: other questions why Cassie's mother did not drive to check
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: on her when calls went unanswered on that Saturday. But
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: just Toy'll know, Cassie's mom was away at a casino.
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: So she's blaming other people. Wow, for what your son
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: and his friend did?
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: Who recorded it?
- 1:50:46Speaker 3: Oh?
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. I know it really fired her up now.
- 1:50:50Speaker 2: Shannon also shares observations about Brian's family, including comments about
- 1:50:55Speaker 2: their finances and parenting decisions. She recounts incident where Brian
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: brought over a zombie movie and describes reacting strongly against
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: having horror films in her home. According to her account,
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: she confronted Tory about it, and her husband intervened as
- 1:51:13Speaker 2: she had Tory cowering in the corner over a movie.
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: Oh, she he like had to hold her down. She
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: was that controlling. The aftermath of Cassie's murder extended far
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: beyond the courtroom. It affected families, communities, and continues to
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: raise difficult questions about responsibility, accountability, and how people process
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: unimaginable strategy.
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, we're not sharing these details to shame
- 1:51:44Speaker 2: Shannon entirely.
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: Not entirely.
- 1:51:49Speaker 2: It was her home and she had every right to
- 1:51:52Speaker 2: decide what was allowed under her roof. Some might describe
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: her as a very protective or hands on parent, and
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: that it's so is not a crime, but maybe pointing
- 1:52:03Speaker 2: out some other people's don't throw stones when you live
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: in glass house. This lady, I.
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: Mean, she even chastises Matt and Cassie, and she's the
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: one who brought it out, you know, about the condom
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: that they had obviously had sex because there was a
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: condom in the toilet. I mean, she made me mad,
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: and I wish I wouldn't have bought her book because
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: I put money in her fucking pocket.
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: Yeah, she's very delusional as as well. I mean that's just.
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, you're gonna feel bad for your kid, but
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: like your your son's not innocent in anything, anything, and
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: maybe this makes you feel better if she wants to
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: believe my son.
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: My son never actually stabbed her. Fine, all right, fine,
- 1:52:49Speaker 2: you want to say never stabbed her. Fine, your son
- 1:52:52Speaker 2: sat there and planned it for days, videotaped himself for days,
- 1:52:56Speaker 2: was in her house, and didn't break.
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: Out and call until the police and break down and say,
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: oh my god, this happened.
- 1:53:03Speaker 2: I mean, it's not even like this was a random thing.
- 1:53:06Speaker 2: This was one of the most premeditated cases. I think
- 1:53:09Speaker 2: we have covered together, and you're trying to be like, well,
- 1:53:13Speaker 2: my little boy.
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: I mean, there's more on the tapes if people want
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: to go to YouTube and listen. They talked about the
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: next kids they were gonna kill when they got away
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: with us.
- 1:53:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: I tried, Amy, but I needed it on Kindle and
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: needed it fast or Buffy. Sorry. What her book does
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: provide is an insight into what her family went through
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: when something like this happened, because a crime of this
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: magnitude does not affect only the person in charge. It
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: does affect the parents, the siblings, the grandparents and uncles everyone.
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: She just happens to be delusional and can't accept the
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: fact that her son is not her perfect little baby.
- 1:53:58Speaker 2: I mean, there have been numerous parents or family members
- 1:54:02Speaker 2: who have written books about someone in their family being
- 1:54:06Speaker 2: a killer, whether it's their kids with mass killing or whatever.
- 1:54:10Speaker 2: People of the defendants have written books, but you know what,
- 1:54:14Speaker 2: you don't deal with them. And why you don't get
- 1:54:16Speaker 2: sympathy Shannon is because you're focusing all the energy and
- 1:54:20Speaker 2: the wrong spot because you don't want to face reality,
- 1:54:22Speaker 2: and that is your son is stupid and a horrible
- 1:54:26Speaker 2: person who took this beautiful girl's entire future away. So
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: I don't care from.
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: A psychological standpoint. I do think reading her book and
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: having some friends that one that's still Mormon and others
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: that were raised Mormon, she was raised her only goal
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: in life was to be a good mom and a
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: good wife. If you read her book, she literally didn't
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: get out of bed for days.
- 1:54:53Speaker 2: Oh I'm sure I would.
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: I think it put her into some kind of spiraling
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: spin that she's still not out of because she cannot
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: accept the fact. At least Brian's parents and that clip
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: we heard earlier, they were like, what did we miss?
- 1:55:09Speaker 2: What?
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: How did this happen? She never says that.
- 1:55:14Speaker 2: No, I mean well, and like sometimes parents are of Lams,
- 1:55:17Speaker 2: sometimes they're not. I mean, I would do the same thing,
- 1:55:21Speaker 2: to be quite honest, but after everything has happened and
- 1:55:25Speaker 2: come out to say some of these things is quite
- 1:55:27Speaker 2: frankly shameful, uh huh, all right, and inappropriate, and she
- 1:55:32Speaker 2: knows better. You want people to understand your story, to relate.
- 1:55:35Speaker 2: Is that why you wrote the book? Because you're not
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: doing Because I am a very big proponent of talking
- 1:55:40Speaker 2: about defendants and their families and people not talking shit
- 1:55:44Speaker 2: about their family members because a lot of people do.
- 1:55:49Speaker 2: But you just don't go saying some of the things
- 1:55:51Speaker 2: she did. Period. It's ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous. So you know,
- 1:55:57Speaker 2: as we said, it's also clear that Shannon and Sean
- 1:55:59Speaker 2: did every thing they believed they could for Toy. They
- 1:56:02Speaker 2: sought out strongly go representation, They arranged for him to
- 1:56:05Speaker 2: receive therapy while he was in jail waiting trial. And
- 1:56:08Speaker 2: those are actions of parents who were trying to navigate
- 1:56:12Speaker 2: something unthinkable. And sometimes that's all you can do, that's
- 1:56:15Speaker 2: all you can. You know, not all bad kids come
- 1:56:17Speaker 2: because they had bad parents, Like at least my opinion
- 1:56:22Speaker 2: is that sometimes they're just horrible people, you know, And
- 1:56:30Speaker 2: I will.
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: Say Sheanon did express sorrow that Cassie was gone. And
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: she said she felt for Cassie's family life. However, there
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: is still little acknowledgment in her writing about her son's role, right, like.
- 1:56:44Speaker 2: To be like, oh, you let a teenage girl be
- 1:56:46Speaker 2: in an house by herself with our boyfriend. Ma'am, your
- 1:56:49Speaker 2: son killed?
- 1:56:51Speaker 10: Are you kidding me?
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: And your son was present, he could have stopped Brian.
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: I mean he didn't get injured. Yeah, he was part
- 1:56:59Speaker 1: of what happened. Then, I mean we heard him in
- 1:57:02Speaker 1: his own words. So I'm sorry, lady, you cannot discount that.
- 1:57:05Speaker 3: No, you know.
- 1:57:06Speaker 2: And again, Cassie was the one who lost her life.
- 1:57:09Speaker 2: She was just sixteen years old. She was house sitting
- 1:57:13Speaker 2: doing what was asked of her, being responsible and level headed,
- 1:57:18Speaker 2: unlike two other jokers we've been talking about, you know.
- 1:57:22Speaker 2: And this is where the story begins, and this is
- 1:57:26Speaker 2: where it always has to return, is to Cassie only
- 1:57:30Speaker 2: at baby Picture.
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: There have been a few updates over the years. In
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: twenty twenty four, it was reported that Matt chooses to
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: live a private life and has no desire to speak
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: to the media. Matt, that is understandable. You live through
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: something no teenager person should ever have to. Your girlfriend
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: was murdered by people you both knew, and that you
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: let into the house and they killed her after you left.
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: I mean, the kind of guilt is un amanagerble I
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: can't image. And I just hope he has done and
- 1:58:02Speaker 1: is living a full and happy life.
- 1:58:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, nobody could have prepared or predicted that.
- 1:58:06Speaker 2: Nobody They couldn't have.
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: But the guilt that I mean, look out, you know,
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: he wouldn't even you know, leave her alone on the couch,
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: you know.
- 1:58:14Speaker 2: He Yeah, he was a carrying guy. Now. In twenty
- 1:58:17Speaker 2: twenty four, Cassie's brother Andrew, her younger brother that she
- 1:58:21Speaker 2: was close with, spoke with the Associated Press. He shared
- 1:58:25Speaker 2: that he has learned how to carry on Carrie what
- 1:58:28Speaker 2: happened to Cassie, though it remains a significant part of
- 1:58:32Speaker 2: who he is. He said every September is still incredibly
- 1:58:36Speaker 2: hard and that he struggles through that month. Some days
- 1:58:40Speaker 2: are good, some days are not. He said he loves
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: Cassie and that what happened will always be in the
- 1:58:46Speaker 2: back of their minds, but they focus on keeping their
- 1:58:48Speaker 2: family strong rather than dwelling only on the darkness, because,
- 1:58:53Speaker 2: I mean, grief is always around. There's no such thing disclosure.
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: Cathy's Cassie's mother, Anna Sadley, passed away in April twenty
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: twenty two after a long health battle. Her sister has
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: chosen to live a private life, staying completely out of
- 1:59:07Speaker 1: the spotlight and focusing on peace.
- 1:59:10Speaker 2: Well, at least Anna gets to be with her daughter again. Yeah, oh,
- 1:59:14Speaker 2: it's so sad now. Shannan left her position at the
- 1:59:18Speaker 2: Idaho State Journal in two thousand and eight. She later
- 1:59:22Speaker 2: worked as a teacher and pursued an associates degree in
- 1:59:25Speaker 2: behavioral science but Fordou's social work. She now lives privately
- 1:59:32Speaker 2: in Idaho with her husband. Okay, all right, well, okay.
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: So, Carrie and Pam Draper's marriage did not survive the
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: aftermath of the crime. They separated and began new chapters
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: of their lives. Carrie continued working in his field. He
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: remains close with his daughter, Tiffany. Pam now lives in Ohio.
- 1:59:55Speaker 1: She also maintains a close relationship with her daughter Tiffany
- 1:59:59Speaker 1: and keeps her life life largely private. Tiffany lives in Boise,
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: teaches yoga, writes courses for yoga instructors and influencers, and
- 2:00:09Speaker 1: got married in twenty twenty five.
- 2:00:11Speaker 2: Oh now, Tory remains incarcerated at the Idaho Maximum Security
- 2:00:17Speaker 2: Facility in Boise Look at a Stupid Face. He has
- 2:00:21Speaker 2: not given any direct media interviews, but did appear in
- 2:00:24Speaker 2: the twenty thirteen documentary Lost for Life at You Mister
- 2:00:30Speaker 2: Making Good Decisions Yeah Now.
- 2:00:33Speaker 1: Brian Draper is also incarcerated at the same facility, though
- 2:00:37Speaker 1: they are reportedly mostly kept separate. Brian has spoken to
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: the media and continues to place all of the blame
- 2:00:45Speaker 1: on Toy bro In interviews. He even has said he
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: did not watch horror movies or own them before meeting Toy,
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: despite there being photographs showing collections of horror posters in
- 2:00:59Speaker 1: his room.
- 2:01:02Speaker 2: He's such a liar, liar.
- 2:01:03Speaker 1: In the line twenty twenty four, he spoke about wanting
- 2:01:05Speaker 1: the opportunity to live in a society again. In other
- 2:01:09Speaker 1: portions of that interview, he discussed burglaries they committed in
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: the weeks before the murder in his relationship with Toy.
- 2:01:17Speaker 1: When asked what he would tell his younger self, he
- 2:01:21Speaker 1: reflected on choices and direction in life, but never said
- 2:01:26Speaker 1: anything about telling himself not to kill Cassie. And we
- 2:01:30Speaker 1: have a small clip.
- 2:01:33Speaker 4: Doing what you're doing like, you're being a weirdo and
- 2:01:37Speaker 4: you're falling into a trap, and get out of it now,
- 2:01:41Speaker 4: step out of your bubble. Meet new people like like
- 2:01:46Speaker 4: that would be number one. It's just meet new people
- 2:01:48Speaker 4: like so much that we we miss out on so
- 2:01:54Speaker 4: much opportunity. And so I had so many, so many
- 2:01:58Speaker 4: times that I could have hung out with new friends
- 2:02:01Speaker 4: and I could have tried new activities, and I didn't
- 2:02:03Speaker 4: because I was so comfortable being miserable, and I was
- 2:02:07Speaker 4: so comfortable in my own little dark room. And the
- 2:02:12Speaker 4: only way out of that is to open the door
- 2:02:13Speaker 4: and just step out and go try new things. And
- 2:02:16Speaker 4: so I was. I was terrified rejection. So there was
- 2:02:19Speaker 4: a girl I had a crush on I'm not gonna
- 2:02:20Speaker 4: stair name, and instead of going and talking to her,
- 2:02:23Speaker 4: I was so mad myself because I didn't have the
- 2:02:26Speaker 4: courage to do that that I just I stood on
- 2:02:29Speaker 4: it and I got mad and I got angry, and
- 2:02:31Speaker 4: I got envious and everybody else around me because they
- 2:02:33Speaker 4: had girlfriends. Why can't I have a girlfriend. Well, I
- 2:02:35Speaker 4: didn't have a girlfriend because I was too afraid. As
- 2:02:38Speaker 4: you go out there.
- 2:02:39Speaker 3: And take chances here, les and you know you might
- 2:02:43Speaker 3: be rejected.
- 2:02:43Speaker 4: So what that's life, buddy. So I wish I could
- 2:02:45Speaker 4: just go back and tell myself, dude, live your life,
- 2:02:48Speaker 4: step out of your comfort zone and.
- 2:02:49Speaker 3: Take some chances.
- 2:02:50Speaker 15: Not don't kill Cassie, but stop being a weirdo. It's
- 2:02:55Speaker 15: also important to point out here that one of the
- 2:02:57Speaker 15: motives mentioned during Brian's trial was the had an unrequited
- 2:03:01Speaker 15: crush on Cassie Stoddard and that was why he selected
- 2:03:04Speaker 15: her and her boyfriend. Our next few questions focused on
- 2:03:08Speaker 15: to now then moved to the same correctional facilities.
- 2:03:13Speaker 2: Sorry, what channel is that? It's e W. I can't
- 2:03:22Speaker 2: remember the name of that channel. I had I.
- 2:03:25Speaker 1: Subscribe to all of theirs, but I sick. Say yeah, yeah.
- 2:03:31Speaker 2: So. Cassie's murder was a brutal crime committed by people
- 2:03:34Speaker 2: she believed were friends. Her death did not only take
- 2:03:38Speaker 2: her life. It altered Matt's life, her family's life. Oh
- 2:03:42Speaker 2: that's very lovely, headstone, isn't it beautifulness, her classmates lives.
- 2:03:47Speaker 2: It also permanently changed the course of Brian and Torre's
- 2:03:50Speaker 2: lives and the lives of their family.
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: Her case is often linked to the movie screen because
- 2:03:56Speaker 1: the boys referenced it in more masks when murdering case.
- 2:04:01Speaker 1: But a film does not force someone to commit murder.
- 2:04:04Speaker 1: Ideas may be borrowed, but the decision to act belongs
- 2:04:08Speaker 1: solely to the person who makes the decision.
- 2:04:12Speaker 2: Now, there is ongoing debate about juvenile sentencing, particularly life
- 2:04:17Speaker 2: without parole for sixteen year olds, and it is a
- 2:04:21Speaker 2: complicated legal and moral decision that continues across the country.
- 2:04:26Speaker 2: I don't have a problem with this one. I don't
- 2:04:29Speaker 2: think that either. I specially do not think Brian is
- 2:04:33Speaker 2: able to be rehabilitated. Did you just not hear him talk? Yeah,
- 2:04:40Speaker 2: explore with us? Thank you, amos, Oh you're my savior.
- 2:04:43Speaker 1: What remains simple is this. Cassie was sixteen, she was
- 2:04:48Speaker 1: house sitting. She trusted people she thought were her friends.
- 2:04:53Speaker 1: She should have gone home after that weekend, said she
- 2:04:58Speaker 1: was killed. And that is the heart that's never going
- 2:05:01Speaker 1: to change.
- 2:05:04Speaker 2: Yeah, and that is it? All right? Well, I know
- 2:05:09Speaker 2: you have a lot of thoughts. I've said a.
- 2:05:12Speaker 1: Lot of them. First Off, I hope Andrew, all, Cassie's family,
- 2:05:19Speaker 1: and Matt are living a good life because I can't
- 2:05:24Speaker 1: imagine what it is like, you know. And moving on,
- 2:05:30Speaker 1: and finding a way to be happy doesn't mean they've
- 2:05:32Speaker 1: forgotten Cassie or the hell they went through, and I
- 2:05:35Speaker 1: think people need to remember.
- 2:05:37Speaker 2: That it was an interesting case. Huffy, thank you for this.
- 2:05:41Speaker 1: Yeah, Buffy, I'm still going down rabbit holes. Okay, still
- 2:05:45Speaker 1: going down rabbit holes now, Ron and Torri. I have
- 2:05:49Speaker 1: a real problem with Brian, Okay. I have tried hard
- 2:05:52Speaker 1: not to feel so critical about him.
- 2:05:54Speaker 2: Why I am. It's fine, but I'll sleep well tonight.
- 2:05:59Speaker 1: Everything I've read or seen, he he has not really
- 2:06:03Speaker 1: owned what he did, and that bothers me. He doesn't. Yeah,
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: he I'm glad that he's in prison because if he
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: got out somebody else, you know, Tory have gone back
- 2:06:17Speaker 1: and forth on and today I'm on the day that
- 2:06:20Speaker 1: he deserves exactly what he fucking got. And his mother's book,
- 2:06:27Speaker 1: I will say has I would say, maybe a whole
- 2:06:30Speaker 1: chapter of good stuff. But I'm sorry, lady, your son
- 2:06:36Speaker 1: was there when a young girl was killed and he
- 2:06:38Speaker 1: did nothing to try to stop it. He should have
- 2:06:43Speaker 1: gotten injured trying to protect her.
- 2:06:45Speaker 2: Right because was that Tory the one with the car?
- 2:06:49Speaker 2: He could have just chose not to drive Brian to
- 2:06:51Speaker 2: the house Shannon.
- 2:06:53Speaker 1: He could have ran out and left. Why Cassie was
- 2:06:56Speaker 1: doing it, even.
- 2:06:57Speaker 2: No friends got the police choice, it's could have been made.
- 2:07:01Speaker 2: You're rous again. This isn't just some like random Oh whoa,
- 2:07:06Speaker 2: here's a murder in two minutes, ma'am.
- 2:07:08Speaker 1: Yeah, he is guilty. And I did say to his mom,
- 2:07:12Speaker 1: I'm sorry, from one boy mom to another. Your son
- 2:07:15Speaker 1: is guilty as shit, and you are disrespecting Cassie, her
- 2:07:20Speaker 1: memory and everybody loved her by not accepting that fact.
- 2:07:26Speaker 2: Right, I mean, she can still like support him and shit.
- 2:07:29Speaker 2: If she can't do that's fine, But like, dude, whoa.
- 2:07:34Speaker 2: I mean?
- 2:07:34Speaker 1: In her book, she says that you see something totally
- 2:07:38Speaker 1: different in the videos than others. You see your son
- 2:07:42Speaker 1: just going along with someone, but that they were just acting.
- 2:07:47Speaker 1: And to her, I say, excuse me, how can you
- 2:07:49Speaker 1: say he was just acting when they in fact did
- 2:07:52Speaker 1: what they said they were.
- 2:07:53Speaker 2: Going to do exactly, like literally to a t exactly.
- 2:08:00Speaker 1: And I've had mixed feelings for years about young people
- 2:08:07Speaker 1: being put in prison. The one thing I need to
- 2:08:10Speaker 1: say it is a complex issue. Part of me thinks
- 2:08:14Speaker 1: they should be given an opportunity after a really long
- 2:08:18Speaker 1: time thirty forty years to get out. Only if they've
- 2:08:21Speaker 1: contributed to society, They've done well in jail, continued their education,
- 2:08:26Speaker 1: they've tried to do something. They can maybe get out
- 2:08:29Speaker 1: when they're ninety. I mean, I'm okay with that. I'm
- 2:08:36Speaker 1: okay with that.
- 2:08:36Speaker 2: I mean it is complex in some cases. I feel
- 2:08:39Speaker 2: very strongly about others.
- 2:08:41Speaker 1: I need a bubble bath and Buffy, Hm, you owe
- 2:08:46Speaker 1: me wine because this was brutal.
- 2:08:50Speaker 2: Yeah, you know. The sad part is is not not
- 2:08:55Speaker 2: only Cassie, but Brian and Toy. There's tons of Brian
- 2:09:02Speaker 2: and Tories running around everywhere, all right. They're they're as
- 2:09:07Speaker 2: much as they want to think they're fucking special, they're not.
- 2:09:10Speaker 2: They're just copies of copies and copies. And I think
- 2:09:15Speaker 2: that is where we really need to be focusing on.
- 2:09:19Speaker 2: How do we get this demographic that falls into this.
- 2:09:24Speaker 2: I mean, listen, all teens are going to be edgy
- 2:09:27Speaker 2: a little bit. That's not what I'm talking about here,
- 2:09:29Speaker 2: all right, especially now in twenty twenty five, as we've
- 2:09:33Speaker 2: had years of data.
- 2:09:35Speaker 1: All right, me, Brian on the school thing, he lied
- 2:09:40Speaker 1: and said it was the other kid who wanted to
- 2:09:42Speaker 1: do the school shooting.
- 2:09:43Speaker 2: Okah, sure, and.
- 2:09:45Speaker 1: So the other kid got kicked out of school, he
- 2:09:49Speaker 1: didn't get anything.
- 2:09:50Speaker 2: Well, I'm not talking about punish or anything like that.
- 2:09:53Speaker 1: Nobody looked at the signs that he had problems.
- 2:09:58Speaker 2: Of course they didn't. Nobody wants to actually, nobody actually
- 2:10:00Speaker 2: wants to fixed problems.
- 2:10:02Speaker 4: Terry.
- 2:10:03Speaker 2: We're just all gonna sit around and talk about it
- 2:10:05Speaker 2: instead of you actually doing sometime, you know. But no,
- 2:10:09Speaker 2: I mean, there is a serious problem with teen boys,
- 2:10:13Speaker 2: early adolescent boys. They are not getting the guidance they
- 2:10:18Speaker 2: need in some way, shape or form. I will talk
- 2:10:21Speaker 2: at nauseum about this issue that's been going on for
- 2:10:25Speaker 2: quite a while. And it, frankly, it isn't just oh
- 2:10:29Speaker 2: mental health issues. It's not just oh guns, it's none
- 2:10:32Speaker 2: of that, all right. It's we have given them literally
- 2:10:36Speaker 2: no guidance, no support, no healthy outlets to what they
- 2:10:43Speaker 2: go through during this stage in life or just like
- 2:10:46Speaker 2: oh you're a boy, you're fine, and.
- 2:10:48Speaker 1: No accountability for when they do try to go outside
- 2:10:52Speaker 1: of boundaries.
- 2:10:54Speaker 2: Now, some of them are just shit bags, and they
- 2:10:57Speaker 2: will always just be shit bags, you know. I do
- 2:11:01Speaker 2: think that there's a few people that I do have
- 2:11:03Speaker 2: a lot of empathy for and it is more mental
- 2:11:07Speaker 2: health issues than anything. But most of them, I mean, oh,
- 2:11:13Speaker 2: I hate them all, and I especially hate these guys.
- 2:11:16Speaker 2: They are so guilty as shit. They're both exactly where
- 2:11:19Speaker 2: they need to go. I don't care if you think, well,
- 2:11:23Speaker 2: well Tory didn't stab anyim both fucking shit, Yes he did.
- 2:11:25Speaker 2: They both, Yes he did. They both did.
- 2:11:28Speaker 1: Don't because what did Brian do? Put the other knife
- 2:11:30Speaker 1: in his pocket and grab the other one?
- 2:11:32Speaker 3: Right?
- 2:11:33Speaker 2: You know Brian's story of well, Tory did all this,
- 2:11:35Speaker 2: but I just stabbed him in the legs.
- 2:11:38Speaker 1: And in the throat and I cut her throat.
- 2:11:40Speaker 2: Well, he didn't say that part until later.
- 2:11:42Speaker 1: I thought that was on the video, like on the video,
- 2:11:45Speaker 1: but he told the cops pops, right, that's what he did.
- 2:11:48Speaker 2: And I believe that that's what Tory did and Brian
- 2:11:52Speaker 2: because that's what a liar does. There has to be
- 2:11:54Speaker 2: some truth in your lie. And he just switched the
- 2:11:57Speaker 2: places of it too. But they're just they're both guilty.
- 2:12:01Speaker 2: It's awesome and for what for what? They didn't make
- 2:12:05Speaker 2: no movie, they didn't write, no screenplay, literally nothing.
- 2:12:10Speaker 1: That's how I hate that they were allowed to appear
- 2:12:13Speaker 1: in that documentary truth wise, because they got to be
- 2:12:17Speaker 1: on screen, and I don't think that should have been
- 2:12:20Speaker 1: allowed because you kind of gave them what they wanted.
- 2:12:23Speaker 2: Mm hmm. I'm going to probably watch it over this
- 2:12:26Speaker 2: weekend because I've got curious about.
- 2:12:28Speaker 1: I've got two documentaries of that, and I've got another
- 2:12:31Speaker 1: book I've ordered. I bought it from the resale bookshop.
- 2:12:35Speaker 2: I mean, I do think that there are good things
- 2:12:37Speaker 2: people can do from prison. So maybe I'll hear something
- 2:12:40Speaker 2: in that documentary from who's in it?
- 2:12:42Speaker 8: Tori?
- 2:12:43Speaker 2: Right? Is that who was in?
- 2:12:46Speaker 1: We just heard Brian talk and that was a year ago,
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: so Brian, yeah, yeah, So we'll see.
- 2:12:53Speaker 2: But that's all I got, So let's go ahead and

- 2:14:11Speaker 2: Eastern because we are beginning our Frozen Fear the Butcher
- 2:14:15Speaker 2: Baker of Alaska multi part series. I can't even I'm
- 2:14:20Speaker 2: not even going to go into what I want to
- 2:14:22Speaker 2: say about it because I'm busy writing like eight episodes,
- 2:14:26Speaker 2: but we are going to be diving deep, like very
- 2:14:30Speaker 2: very very deep into infamous serial killer Robert Hansen his
- 2:14:34Speaker 2: endless number of victims who refuse, We refused to be forgotten,
- 2:14:40Speaker 2: and how all of it could have been stopped numerous times.
- 2:14:44Speaker 2: You guys are hold me on, oh man, true cry. Friends,
- 2:14:48Speaker 2: If you think you know this whole story, I bet
- 2:14:50Speaker 2: you don't because I thought I did, and then I
- 2:14:53Speaker 2: was like what I thought I did?
- 2:14:56Speaker 1: And then you opened a rabbit a hole, and I
- 2:14:58Speaker 1: need you to start stop opening so many rabbit holes.
- 2:15:02Speaker 1: I'm going to get lost down one of these rabbit holes.
- 2:15:05Speaker 2: Yeah. The state of Alaska has a lot of blood
- 2:15:08Speaker 2: on their hands from this, and we are here to
- 2:15:11Speaker 2: shine a light on all of it. So warning there
- 2:15:15Speaker 2: will be lots of rance and curcy words. I literally
- 2:15:20Speaker 2: write the things just angry because it's unbelievable. It's absolutely
- 2:15:25Speaker 2: unbelievable everything that goes down. So starting this coming Tuesday,
- 2:15:29Speaker 2: that's right, just in a few days. You don't have
- 2:15:31Speaker 2: to wait all week. We will be here at eight
- 2:15:33Speaker 2: pm with part one of Frozen and Fear the Butcher
- 2:15:37Speaker 2: Baker of Alaska. So I am so excited to talk
- 2:15:41Speaker 2: about this, guys.
- 2:15:43Speaker 1: I'm happy to tell you there is some new merch
- 2:15:45Speaker 1: that drops on Sunday that literally has the wording buckle
- 2:15:49Speaker 1: up because let me tell you, you're going to need to
- 2:15:52Speaker 1: buckle up. March is going to be insanity.
- 2:15:56Speaker 2: It is. It is, so you're gonna get lots more
- 2:15:58Speaker 2: of us True Crime and One Time listeners. But is

- 2:16:06Speaker 1: I just want everyone to please be safe, watch out.
- 2:16:12Speaker 1: If you see something, say something. Do not be Brian
- 2:16:15Speaker 1: or Tory. Okay, be better. And for moms, from one
- 2:16:20Speaker 1: mom to another. Kids disappoint us, kids can screw their
- 2:16:24Speaker 1: whole freaking lives up. You can love them and support them,
- 2:16:28Speaker 1: but that does not mean you shouldn't make them take accountability.
- 2:16:33Speaker 2: Right, that's actually being a good parent.
- 2:16:35Speaker 1: That's called being a parent.
- 2:16:37Speaker 2: Sorry, all right, everyone stay safe and until next time
- 2:16:42Speaker 2: next Tuesday, eight pm, go forth and be amazing. So
- 2:16:47Speaker 2: bye bye, hen
