- 0:48then a brief answer packed with facts.
- 0:50So let's get on with today's episode.
- 1:04First up, a warm up to set the stage.
- 1:07Here's the question. What is NASA's Artemis program
- 1:10mainly trying to do with the Moon?
- 1:16The answer is to return astronauts to the moon, build up
- 1:20long term exploration near the lunar South Pole, and prepare
- 1:24for future trips deeper into space.
- 1:26Artemis includes a series of missions, new spacecraft, and
- 1:30international partners. Here's the question What giant
- 1:34rocket launches Orion toward the moon on Artemis missions?
- 1:42The answer is the Space Launch System, or SLS.
- 1:46The first version, called Block One, stands about 98 meters tall
- 1:51and produces about £8.8 million of thrust at liftoff using 4RS25
- 1:57engines and two solid rocket boosters.
- 2:00Here's the question, What is the name of the crew spacecraft that
- 2:04flies around the moon on Artemis missions?
- 2:11The answer is Orion. It has a crew module for
- 2:14astronauts, a launch abort system on top for safety, and a
- 2:18European built service module that provides power, propulsion,
- 2:22and life support functions. Here's the question Which space
- 2:26agency builds Orion Service Module?
- 2:33The answer is the European Space Agency, or ESA.
- 2:37The European Service Module supplies electricity from solar
- 2:40arrays and uses its main engine and smaller thrusters to steer
- 2:44Orion on the way to and from the Moon.
- 2:47Here's the question What was special about Artemis One in
- 2:512022? The answer is that Artemis 1 was
- 2:58an UNCRUD test flight. It launched in November 2022,
- 3:03sent Orion around the moon, tested systems like the heat
- 3:07shield during high speed re entry, and splashed down in the
- 3:10Pacific Ocean in December 2022. Here's the question Where do
- 3:15Artemis missions launch from in Florida?
- 3:21The answer is Launch Complex 39 B at NASA's Kennedy Space
- 3:26Center. This historic pad was upgraded
- 3:29for SLS with new lightning protection towers, a sound
- 3:33suppression system, and ground equipment to fuel the rocket.
- 3:36Here's the question Which region of the moon is a key target for
- 3:40future Artemis landings because of water ice?
- 3:47The answer is the lunar South Pole.
- 3:50Scientists have found evidence of water ice and permanently
- 3:54shadowed craters there, which could help with life support and
- 3:57making fuel in the future. Here's the question What is the
- 4:01name of the lunar Lander selected to carry Artemis 3
- 4:04astronauts from lunar orbit down to the surface?
- 4:11The answer is Spacex's Starship Human Landing System.
- 4:15Often called Starship HLS, it is designed to dock with Orion in
- 4:20lunar orbit, take a pair of astronauts to the surface, and
- 4:23return them to lunar orbit after their moon walks.
- 4:27Here's the question Who else is building a lunar Lander for a
- 4:30later Artemis mission, adding more options?
- 4:38The answer is Blue Origin, which was selected to provide a Lander
- 4:41for Artemis 5. Having more than one land or
- 4:44type gives the program flexibility for future missions.
- 4:48Here's the question What small space station will orbit the
- 4:52moon to support Artemis missions?
- 4:59The answer is the Gateway. It will be assembled in lunar
- 5:02orbit with modules like the Power and Propulsion Element and
- 5:05the Halo habitat, and it will host systems and instruments
- 5:09from partners including the United States, Europe, Japan and
- 5:13Canada. Here's the question, Which
- 5:16country is providing Canadarm 3 for the Gateway?
- 5:24The answer is Canada. Through the Canadian Space
- 5:26Agency, Canadarm 3 will be a smart robotic system to move
- 5:31equipment, inspect the outside of the station and help with
- 5:34visiting vehicles. Here's the question What is the
- 5:38name of the new lunar space suit being developed for Artemis moon
- 5:41walks? The answer is the Axiom
- 5:48Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or Axiom U, developed by Axiom
- 5:52Space with NASA. It is designed to improve
- 5:55mobility, fit more body sizes, and handle the cold, dark
- 5:59conditions at the lunar South Pole.
- 6:02Here's the question What is a major goal for crew diversity on
- 6:06Artemis missions to the Moon? The answer is to land the first
- 6:13woman and the first person of color on the moon.
- 6:16This goal highlights inclusion in space exploration and expands
- 6:20opportunities for astronauts. Here's the question What did
- 6:24Orion prove about its heat shield during Artemis 1?
- 6:31The answer is that the Afcoat heat shield protected the
- 6:34capsule during re entry at lunar return speeds of about 39,000
- 6:39kilometers per hour. Engineers studied the charred
- 6:42surface after splashdown to improve performance and
- 6:45understanding for future crude flights.
- 6:47Here's the question How many cube dots rode along on the
- 6:51Artemis 1 mission inside the Rockets adapter ring?
- 6:58The answer is 10 cube Sots. They included missions to study
- 7:03radiation, test deep space navigation, and investigate the
- 7:07moon, though not all of them operated as planned after
- 7:10deployment. Here's the question What rescue
- 7:14feature sits on top of Orion to protect astronauts during launch
- 7:18and ascent? The answer is the launch abort
- 7:25system. It can fire powerful motors to
- 7:28pull the crew capsule away from the rocket in an emergency, then
- 7:31deploy a parachute system to bring the capsule down safely.
- 7:35Here's the question What ocean did Orion splash down in at the
- 7:39end of Artemis 1? The answer is the Pacific Ocean
- 7:47off the coast of California. NASA and U.S.
- 7:50Navy teams worked together to recover the capsule and bring it
- 7:53onto a ship for transport. Here's the question Which crew
- 7:58is assigned to fly the first crude or iron mission around the
- 8:01moon known as Artemis 2? The answer is Reed Wiseman,
- 8:09Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen from the
- 8:13Canadian Space Agency. Artemis 2 is planned as a lunar
- 8:17flyby to test Orion's life support and communications with
- 8:21people on board. Here's the question What
- 8:24international agreement connected to Artemis sets out
- 8:26basic principles for safe space exploration?
- 8:33The answer is the Artemis Accords.
- 8:36Many countries have signed them to support things like
- 8:39transparency, peaceful exploration, help for spacecraft
- 8:43and distress and sharing of scientific data.
- 8:46Here's the question, what is the main engine type on the SLS core
- 8:50stage and what famous program used them before?
- 8:57The answer is the RS25 which previously powered the Space
- 9:02shuttle for SLS. These engines are upgraded to
- 9:06handle higher performance and new flight conditions.
- 9:10Here's the question, what are the large Whiteside boosters on
- 9:13SLS provide during the first two minutes of flight?
- 9:21The answer is most of the Rockets liftoff thrust these
- 9:25five segments. Solid rocket boosters burn
- 9:27aluminum based propellant and separate from the core stage
- 9:30about two minutes after launch. Here's the question.
- 9:34What is the name of the power and propulsion module plan for
- 9:37the gateway and what does it do? The answer is the power and
- 9:45Propulsion element, often called PPE.
- 9:48It uses solar electric propulsion to move and maintain
- 9:51the gateway's orbit and provides power to the station.
- 9:55Here's the question, which country is contributing the IHAB
- 9:59module and the Esprit module for the Gateway?
- 10:06The answer is several European partners through the European
- 10:09Space Agency I have will add living and workspace while
- 10:13Esprit will provide communications and refueling
- 10:16capability for visiting vehicles.
- 10:19Here's the question Where on Earth do astronauts train for
- 10:23Artemis moon walks and suit operations to practice in low
- 10:26gravity conditions? The answer is places like NASA's
- 10:34Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory in Texas and outdoor lunar Terrain
- 10:38Test sites. Underwater training and field
- 10:41tests help teams rehearse tasks, tool use, and communications
- 10:45procedures. Here's the Super Challenge
- 10:47question. What three major parts work
- 10:50together to carry astronauts from Earth to the lunar surface
- 10:53and back in the Artemis architecture?
- 11:00The answer is the Space Launch System to leave Earth, the Orion
- 11:04spacecraft for the cruise trip to and from lunar orbit, and a
- 11:07human landing system to descend to the Moon and return to lunar
- 11:11orbit. These parts, along with support
- 11:13from the Gateway and Ground teams, make the full mission
- 11:17chain. That wraps up our Artemis trivia
- 11:24tour. You heard about the rocket, the
- 11:27spacecraft, the space suits, where we launch, and who is
- 11:30helping build the path to the moon.
