- Armed Anchored & Adorned: Well, hello, welcome. Hello. Welcome. I'm so excited that you're here This is my beautiful friend Cameron. Hello. I love how God connected us through our church back in 2020-ish. And I was working in the children's ministry and we were trying to find a space that would serve your beautiful boys. ⁓ You want to tell us a little bit about your beautiful voice? Sure. ⁓ My four beautiful, wonderful kids are, ⁓ they all have autism. So they have moderate, they would be considered moderate autism, which means they also have a communication impairment and intellectual disability. They need a lot more support for activities of daily living and learning new things. ⁓ They can speak but they are very limited like you can't have a conversation with them. So it can prove to be quite challenging. yes, so when we moved to the area, we moved to Sorrento in November 2020 and was looking for churches and you know with that kind of need. I don't just show up at a church, know, unannounced. smart. Yeah, I just want to make sure because I have had those experiences too at churches where they have, I've gone to retrieve them from wherever I left them and they were not there. So I have had to, yeah, two times that has happened to me. And so I, you know, did the homework ahead of time, reached out to a of churches in our community to find out who would have, ⁓ a place for them. ⁓ like a disability ministry kind of thing and Gray City House, I exceptionally blessed. kind of there. Right. But because of COVID was like... We had just started the children's ministry up again. Right. Right. Because we had just moved buildings and we were trying to make life make sense, but also then we added the kids and then... So we were kind of like putting the pieces back together. And so when you came, you jump started that for us. And I was transitioning out of that position. So that was our first connection. But since we've done, we've done some Bible studies together. We've done some beautiful events and. We've prayed together and we use Marco Polo. You've heard me mention that here. Marco Polo is an awesome app that if you are like any other human that I'm aware of, life is just so busy. You can't have a phone conversation at the same time. You don't align. ⁓ You know, we get to... I get to watch you hang out in the closet when you're hiding. ⁓ Yeah. And her kiddo comes in and he does this super cool beatbox. I'm like, that was awesome. He is pretty cool. is pretty good at it. I'm like, yeah. Yeah, because they love music. They're singing all the time and ⁓ it's fun. It's fun. I have concerts all the time at the house. Lucky girl. Yeah. Well, that... ⁓ I love our connection, I'm so grateful. Yes, likewise. And I know I see Jesus living and working so vibrantly, beautifully through your life. And I was like, let's have coffee and talk about life. Yes. Yes, let me tell you about how I met Jesus. Well, let me tell you what he's doing. in my life now. So I ⁓ now serve at the same church that we were just talking about. got started where I met Tara and I lead our disability ministry for the church and that includes a buddy break, which is a respite program in collaboration with another organization called Nathaniel's Hope. So cool. Yeah. Amazing what they've done. Yeah. It really is a beautiful thing. And We have been successfully maintaining that program for two years now. In January was our two year anniversary. And it's thriving. mean, yes. Really beautiful. Yep. And so I kind of do the backend part of it. I do a lot of the admin stuff, the keeping collect collection of all the names and numbers and do all the communication. ⁓ leading up to Buddy Break and then I don't really serve as a buddy but because those types of skills that yeah spreadsheets and emails and stuff that's easy for me and I'm happy to serve but it it I don't usually do like the on the ground work and kind of stay behind the scenes which would make sense to me yes I see you, you are on that front line every day. So for you to be there serving in that capacity doesn't, that's your respite day. Right. And even though I'm still actively helping, like I'm not, it's still probably, it gives me a little bit of break. Yeah. And I, I also do the trainings. So I'll teach ⁓ new volunteers that come in about the program and get to do the required training that Nathaniel's hope. requires for any new volunteer to do. So since we jumped into body break, I feel like we need to explain what that really looks like at our church because nobody knows about, not nobody, but very few people know about this. And I know my parents, you know, had a sister. You should share that with me. And this would have been life changing for them. Sure. So as a church, there's a couple of ways that A church can get started to serve families that have disabilities. And one is offering a respite program, which is what Buddy Break is. And the other one is creating like a different type of buddy program so that on Sundays or every time the church comes together, Sundays, Wednesdays, whatever, you have enough volunteers to offer one-on-one support for the individuals that need that help. know, the kids that have that one-to-one support so they can go in with all the other kids their same age. Okay. And that's all buddy break? No, those are like two different things. Okay. ⁓ So just explain buddy break first. Okay. Buddy break is... a respite program that we offer for free for people living with disabilities. So it's a once a month thing. ⁓ on a Saturday morning from 10 to one, the parents can come and drop off their kid and ⁓ they get a break. And so they get to go do whatever they want. And the premise of it is that we have the one to one ratio. We're all there. We have some professionals that are part of our team, but most of them are people that have nothing to do with just serving people with disabilities. ⁓ And so it is just fun. It's like we have a party every month and we make a different theme and we have crafts, we have worship, we have outside time. We try to do different themes like the one that I'm planning right now for March is going to be an Olympics theme. ⁓ cool. Yeah. So I'm trying to ⁓ plan some games, which, you know, planning. I'm good a little bit for planning, but that's where Tracy and the other people on our team come in and kind of help execute that stuff. but, that's super cool. Yeah. And so we'll post a link if you want either to be involved, see if there's somewhere around you that you want to get involved with that, or you want to help bring that to your church because the need is so real. Right. And ⁓ the Lord revealed to me about a year ago ⁓ saying, you know, was like, Lord, we have a waiting list. We have a waiting list every month because because it has to be a one to one thing. We can only have as many kids or VIPs ⁓ as we have volunteers. And so every month we have a waiting list. Sorry. Here's Alex's. I should have known that was Every month. So should I. But every month we have a waiting list. And so, you know, I just remember thinking, we just need more volunteers. We need more volunteers. And he revealed to me, Cameron, you can keep getting more volunteers. And yeah, that will be great. But we really need more churches to be part of this because the need is so great, like you said. our church is not that big. Our spaces that we use really, we... can't accommodate as many kids as we would love. We probably max out anyways at like 18 to 20. ⁓ And so, you know, so that is another thing that the Lord has moved in my heart and ⁓ I am just trying to be obedient and patient and just like I sat on that for a while, like ⁓ just praying through it and you know. trying to just listen and wait for how to do it. Okay, Lord, you gave me this vision of that we need to do that, but how do I do it? And step by step, step by step. Yeah. And I just, I was trying to just follow what the Bible says to pray over it, bring, get wisely wise counsel over it and, ⁓ brought it to our pastors for guidance. And what do I, this is what the burden that The Lord is in my heart, but I have no idea, right? How to do this. And that, through that process, God connected me to another organization called Johnny and Friends, and which they are an international organization that serves people living with disabilities in a variety of ways. But one of the things that they offer is church training resources for free for churches. And then I learned that they have something called an engagement team, which is something I was trying to do on my own, which was reaching out to other churches all by myself and trying to make these connections. But they already have this process in place. And I've got the opportunity to now participate with them and join forces with them. And so that's another area that I serve. Yeah. ⁓ And it's still kind of emerging and getting started with that. But you know, nothing moves too fast with it. It's all in God's timing. So just being patient. He's going to light that path and lead you exactly where you couldn't even imagine being. Yeah. It's going to be so much better than what you even think it's going to look like. Yeah. I'm excited for it. Me too. Because you're just getting started. from my perspective. But so obviously you have the four beautiful autistic boys so you recognize the need. We're kind of going backwards here. ⁓ what led you to... Hold let me think about how we can connect all that. ⁓ So you see the need, but you also have a deep longing to serve the Lord. Yes. And I love that both of these minute their ministries like they are rooted in Jesus. Yes. And what Tell me about your connection to Jesus too. Yes, so I am an only child of a single mom and growing up she did not take me to church but I would go to church with my grandma or my friends. I'd be spending the night with my friends and I would go along with them and I started sensing a difference. in the presence of the people in the church, could sense the Holy Spirit. And I would meet people. Like I have this one friend that I remember specifically, her parents were just so filled with peace. And it was so very different from my home life. And I ⁓ could feel it. what I now know is the Holy Spirit. what's calling to me, I wanted more. was hungry for it. I wanted that peace. And so I then began looking for every opportunity that I could to go to church. And I got saved and got baptized when I was 13. I was July, whatever year that was that I turned 13. And that was really special moment. And then the next April, my father drowned in a tragic accident. And that was heartbreaking and devastating and sent me into a spiral of grief and became angry and bitter and I really actually don't remember a lot from that time. I bet. But at some point, I think I must have still been going to church with people, know, still like doing things because I, the next thing I remember is like really going to a youth retreat. with one of the churches with my friend. It was like a Baptist. We went to youth camp in the mountains and it was there that I felt like the Lord healed my heart in a lot of ways. I still was grieving my father for a long time afterwards, but the hardness that my heart had become from the anger and the bitterness and the rage and the disappointment and all of that that was there just melted away. And it was so profound to me and it was so healing that I kind of like recommitted myself, I guess, to the Lord at that time. I was, I think I was around 16 when that happened. then, yeah. God, and so I have those ⁓ experiences, those real experiences from when I was a teenager. But you know, I wandered as life went on. No way. Yeah, I became a young woman and an adult and you know. We don't know anything about that. No. But like, thank you Jesus. Yeah, I wandered. away from the Lord and got caught up in worldly things and you know ⁓ for a long time I never forgot about God. I always remembered that experience the way that he met me there in my grief and healed my heart and my wandering had nothing to do with like I never took went so far as to say no God doesn't exist or anything like that it just you know you knew he was who he was but yeah But I was doing my own thing. a break. Yeah, doing my own thing. ⁓ But when it was time, when I wanted to have kids and, you know, ⁓ got pregnant with my first son really kind of drew me back to the Lord. it was, ⁓ ever since I've been close with the Lord. like, and it was just a gradual progression, a maturing, right? of my relationship with him since then. And, you know, it started with me just kind of reading my own books and listening to Christian music and, you know, but I wasn't like attending church right away and, you know, so, it just gradually my relationship grew with God and he got me through so many things. And in that 2011 when Jeremiah was born and I was pregnant with him. My second son that passed away, ⁓ was one of the most, God used that experience to draw me near to him in such an intimate way. ⁓ He comforted me so gently and kindly and showed me his character in such a way that I don't know what else he could have used to, can't imagine any other way that he could have gotten me to that place. and ever since then, I've just been his. yeah. Yep, no matter what, I won't. It's like that unshakable faith because of the way that he has saved me. Thank you Lord for it. Yeah. Only for, only yours, only from your hand. Yeah. Only because of you. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And your faithfulness. Yeah. He doesn't let go and never let go of me through the time of my wandering and the times of my weakness still that happens because I'm human, we're human, like we're fallible. We're not perfect the way he, we can't love him perfectly the way that he loves us perfectly. But ⁓ close. ⁓ no, I, only, but ⁓ but God is so good and I, you know, so that's my history with him and probably two or three years ago ⁓ leading up to where I am now and the things that I'm doing I my husband and I when we moved to Sorrento we started Puzzle Ranch like I let me back up a second so when I was going through what I went through with Jeremiah he gave me 2nd Corinthians chapter 1 verse 3 to 5 that says God is the God of all comfort and ⁓ we are to comfort others the way that he has given us comfort. ⁓ And so that has been an impactful verse for me that I cling to because from that I served parents that had ⁓ gone through perinatal loss like I went through. And then now I'm serving parents and families that are people that live with disabilities. And so it's been like my life scripture that I feel like he is giving me that purpose. So when we moved to Sorrento in 2020 with the intention of having land so we could have horses for our kids because we everybody knows that, well, I don't know that everybody knows, but it's pretty common knowledge that animals and horses are healing. And so that was our intention. And then as we continued to live there, we just felt like we wanted to serve other families ⁓ in that capacity. allow, you know, create special events or, you know, welcome people that have disabilities to the property to allow them to have interactions with animals and, know, the park light was beautiful park like setting and, ⁓ yeah. So we, and it still is. ⁓ but we, we did that work for a while and, ⁓ but then things started changing in our family. The needs of our kids started kind of growing and we've had to try to take a back seat, pull back on what we were doing because we just couldn't do it all. But I was praying, my God, what do I do? I had a very dear friend who was my supervisor at the hospital say, Cameron, if you do nothing more than teach your children about Jesus, then you've done everything. That's right. And so I started you know, focusing on that and how do I teach my kids about Jesus because of their intellectual disability and the way the disability affects them in learning. Like how do I do this? And so I really, you know, started asking God to show me and teach me and then one day we were given gift to go to a concert. Such a good concert. Yeah, we were blessed with tickets to go see Casting Crowns and Kane. And Kane was singing their song, The Commission, and the Lord just used that song to show me, stop me. was hands raised, you know, like in the moment. And he just showed me this vision of Cameron, this is your ministry. This is your mission field. The disability families, this is your mission field. You're not. traveling overseas, you know, I've always had desires to do that kind of mission work. But, you know, he said, this is, and tell, this is your mission field. And so I have just been saying, yes, Lord, yes, Lord, what you have for me, whatever you have for me, my prayer, it's just been God shift my eyes to align with your plan for me. And that's just been growing to. lead me to where I am now in the work that I'm doing. I'm not qualified. I don't have a degree. But that doesn't matter to God. Does not care. No, I don't have any special training. I disagree with that. Okay, my my own. You have very special training. And what's cool is what I've witnessed in my life, others lives, your lives is when He calls us to something you can look back and be like, ⁓ yeah, you've been preparing me for this the whole time. Right? Right. How cool is that? Like that is cool. You can look back and see the roadmap and he's like, you've just been faithfully following me and I have prepared the way for you because that's what he does. Yeah. So I think you do have special training from the King of kings, he knew exactly where you were going to be and what you needed training for and here you are, loving and serving for him. It's so cool, Cameron. It's so cool. It's so humbling. I'm so honored and so humbled that he would use me. Because you said, yes, Lord. Yes, Lord. I put, that's all that I want to do is to do what he has for me. And that has continued to be my prayer for many years now. Like align my vision with your vision, my heart with your heart, my steps with your plan for me. know, like let me not pick up anything that is not anointed by you. I will. But even if we do. But even if we do, there's grace. And he'll live and work through that and be like, you know. bring that along with you. You'll learn a little something through this too. He wastes nothing. Yeah, right. He wastes nothing. I'm so sad. love that. He is so cool. ⁓ So in that, ⁓ in that moment at the concert, hear, is your mission field. What, what did you, walk away with like, okay, I'm headed in this direction. well, I think every time, well, I wanted to sit with that some. And, you know, there's always a little bit of a doubt there. Like, was it, was that what I thought it was? Of course. I hate that. I hate that too. But I'm so under, like, I can't really relate to that. I think the more... just feel like I'm getting better at recognizing it, but with a lot of intention and practice. Like we were just talking about recently in our Bible study, but ⁓ you know, there has been many times that the Lord has spoken to me where I just kind of was like, what? know, ⁓ but he often gives me that feeling. That's what I feel like, ⁓ yeah, it's probably him. It's kind of like, it makes me think of Mary when the angel spoke to her about what was to come and she pondered it in her heart. What does the word say? can't remember exactly, but basically she pondered it and just remembered it and pondered it and that's kind of what I did with it. I, know, life is life-ing in the meantime. Yeah. And just trying to figure out. I need you to repeat that. I said life is life being in the meantime as you're pondering and moving forward and looking right looking Okay, and that was clear and I know that was from you Lord What's next? Yeah, and And just you know keep praying the same thing over and over and Lord, you know align my vision Give me eyes to see your you know ears to hear a light the way show me the next step So when did you see the next step? Oh, goodness. don't even remember. Maybe not necessarily a when, but what it looks like. Because the timeline isn't always important. No. It's the step. Because to be honest, I can't remember if that was before Buddy Break or not, but I want to say the Buddy Break was the next step, like bringing that to leadership. knew about Nathaniel's Hope, which is the organization that rolls out buddy break with churches that are willing. ⁓ because we are a Nathaniel's Hope family. And so I was aware of their ministry and what they were doing. And ⁓ I approached our church leadership about the idea of doing it and they were great with it. yeah. ⁓ And I didn't even know that time. Thomas knows them, the founders of Nathaniel Phil. Thomas knows everybody. Yeah, Thomas and Tyler, they knew them, they're friends with them. And he was like, ⁓ yeah, of course. And I was like, perfect. So, you know, that was, I think the next step for what God had for me. so he aligned me with Tracy and Tracy and I spent about nine months praying and planning. about how to get it launched and did all the training that we needed to do and and then we launched it in January of 2024. Can I just highlight that for a moment? I don't think that's a very popular place that people begin. Nine months of prayer. My personality is if I hear a green light Let's do it! Like it's not, let's hang out and pray about this for nine months. Like, yeah, well, you know, it, I mean, it takes prep and everything. takes prep, But it took, but I just, not much time. I really just felt like that's a really important, when you're in that season of waiting and prep and things to be covering things in prayer is that is where you want to start. That is where you want to start. That's really really important and I love that you guys did that. Yes. And you guys are definitely the team for it. Yeah. You've done such a beautiful job. Thank you. To watch the growth just in our church ⁓ and it's always been on my heart for churches to be connected with one another. The concept of churches in competition is absolutely mind-numbingly ridiculous. I do not understand that. If there is any part of that where you are, please be praying against that because that is not what we're here for. Right. We all have different... This one's an arm. This one's a nose. We need each other. And so coming together and serving like this with these two ministries is just so the heart of God. I am so grateful. And how cool would he use families like the children with disabilities to draw churches together? Right? Like that's so the heart of the Lord. Like he's so cool. He really is. Are you geeking out over there? So, ⁓ I love how you had shared with me when just your heart at how because you know you know the statistics you know how Heartbreakingly and I witnessed it with my family. Mm-hmm underserved and how great the needs are and You're like, these are my people, right? And you're like they need to know Jesus. Yes, and they feel so alone and isolated and and you're Allowing the Lord through your family and your life to draw people to Jesus I I Thank you Lord for it. Thank you Jesus for giving you those eyes to see And what's even more cool is there's more. Just wait, there's more. ⁓ I often think about a phrase that one of my friends, Stephanie, had shared. She was like, thank you for your little offering. And she was talking about a place where I was serving in our church. And I just loved that phrase because when we look at the King of Kings, we have nothing, nothing to give. And yet he doesn't see it like that. We see it like that, but he sees our heart just Lord, I know this is nothing in the bigness of who you are. So I love the concept of my little offering and we already talked about some of your little offering. But man, there's even more. You're going to try to, well you are, you're engaging the youth. inclusion starts with you. Tell us more about that too. So I was invited in the fall to talk to a group of third to fifth graders about disability. And so I was like, ⁓ this is great. I would love to. And I was like, thank you, Lord, because I want invitations. That's what I keep praying for. God, just give me invitations to share. And look at him. Look at him inviting you all over the place. Yep. And so I said, so I prepared for that, prayed for that, prayed, prepared for that. And they said, ⁓ this needs to be to the youth. This is great, Cameron. Let's get this to the youth. So. Right now I am preparing to present it. I'm trying to make some adjustments to ⁓ make it not to third and fourth grade graders, but to middle and high schoolers. Yeah, yeah. so I'm preparing for that now. So I'll be presenting that. And it's called Inclusion Starts With You Being the Hands and Feet of Jesus. And we talk about ⁓ just what is disability and what does the Bible say about disability and how can we really... ⁓ reach out to others and make people feel included and feel like they belong. Because it is part of the call, the call to serve that God has given me is it really, there needs to be a mindset shift. And part of within our church, like Big C church. So, know, a lot of what God has taught me about why That people with disabilities are so unreached is because churches are not always welcoming Unfortunately, they Feel often parents will hear ⁓ we can't take care of your child here with that xy they fill in the blank Condition or it's fear. We cannot accommodate. Yes. It's fear because it they feel ill-equipped They're afraid they're gonna lose your kid Yeah, I mean there's a million reasons. ⁓ yeah. And so, I mean, I just, I understand that, but I love how... where there's fear, all we need to do is talk about how to face that and what are we afraid of and how can we come against that. And just by saying yes, Lord. It doesn't have to be complicated. That's what I think that most, what I'm learning is that is often a misconception is that it doesn't have to be complicated. It just has to be accommodating to. start with one family that comes and then you start building some resources around what they need and then other people come, you know, like I always say when I'm talking to others in this field of It's like the great wisdom from Kevin Costner in field of dreams. If you build it, they will come so like you Kevin But it's true like yeah, you know we started buddy break with to my knowledge Our family was... And I think there was one other family that had kids with disabilities. So maybe there was six kids in our church that could be served by the church. But we opened it, we started it, and boom, like now we're full, like, you know, busting at the seams. Busting at the seams. And so if you build it, they will come. you know, often churches will say, ⁓ we don't have anybody that we need. ⁓ You don't know that yet and they are probably not coming because they don't see a safe space there yet. create a safe space and then they'll come. so ⁓ it takes one to recognize there's a need. Let's talk about it. Yeah. Not be, ⁓ no, no, no, we can't do that. Right. Cause there's a fear behind that. No, no, no. Yeah. You're, you're absolutely right. Yes Lord. How? Yes. And show us the way. Yep. And so, You know, God showed me that there are statistics, there's people that study this and statistics that say that people living with disabilities is like, I want to say the fourth largest unreached people group, or I don't know where the numbers come from, but it is a significant number of people living on the planet, not just in our country, that are unreached, living with a disability and unreached. And the deaf community is even more profoundly. affected the most, think. so it's just God has used so many different opportunities to open my eyes and I've learned a lot. ⁓ I was able to attend in 2024 ⁓ Disability in the Church Conference and I learned a lot there. ⁓ you know, just Johnny and Friends has so much learning and, you know, just being connected. There's other people, there's other organizations out there that are doing this, just getting connected. There's so much free information and it's just... Johnny and Friends has so much like training. Yeah, training. amazing. Yep. And so there's so much available. There's so much available. But and then that's another thing that churches don't know or realize either. And that's why being on the engagement team, being connected with Johnny and Friends that has such a deep pocket of resources. ⁓ Yeah, what does Johnny and Friends do? You said they serve... You've told me a couple things, just give me like a couple. Sure, so one of their big programs is called Wheels for the World. So they collect used wheelchairs, ⁓ mainly wheelchairs, but I do believe they collect like walkers or other type of aids, refurbish them and deliver them to third world countries across the world. Wow. And so ⁓ that's one of their big outreaches. They also do retreats for families and marriage retreats and things like that. That's another big aspect of what they do to serve people. ⁓ And then the third thing that I think is a big thing for them is the church training resources. And so, yeah, those are huge. There's companies out there that will charge churches. and that's not wrong, know, but yeah, but there's ⁓ they're trying, they're intentionally making it free to make it accessible. I love that they have that ability. thank you, Laura. Well, yes, we need it. So we will add any of all of these links ⁓ to the show notes if you're interested in getting connected in any of these ways, you're feeling that nudge. ⁓ I just would love for you and I to come. You pray over those that are feeling that nudge right now. That they're feeling that stirring of stepping into their little offering. Whatever that is, listen to it. ⁓ It's freeing and you're never fully satisfied. in this world unless you're walking in who God made you to be and he's going to lead you right to who that is and what that looks like. So and there is something healing in serving others that are going through hardship that you can relate to. Yeah, it's healing for your own heart and mind to to do that and to serve in the name of Jesus other people and minister to them and it's something that I feel, I believe strongly that all the hardship and things that we go through in life, good and bad, whatever, ⁓ God will use that to minister to other people. He will give you the strength to do it. ⁓ And you already have the special training. All He's asking is your... Yes. Yes, Lord. Yes, Lord. So would you mind praying? No, I wouldn't at all. Heavenly Father, just thank you so much. You are so good. You are so good and you have been good to me my whole life. I know that there are people out there that are listening and they, they're interested, Lord. their hearts are stirred by our testimony, Lord, and they... but there's something that might be holding them back. There's fears, there's doubts, there's concerns and worries, Lord, but I pray, Father, that they would just continue to lean into you, that they would continue to seek you. They would pray for alignment to be with you, Lord, their vision to be your vision, their heart to be your heart, Lord, that you would just... guide their steps, Lord, remove their fears, remove their doubts, Lord, and just help them to know how much it blesses them as well as others to serve and step out of their comfort zone, but only in your strength, Lord. It's nothing that they can do on their own, but only with you, God. And Father, if you are calling them, to step out and to serve others in their community, Lord, that you would just bless them, you would strengthen them, you would carry them, you would show them, give them courage, give them strength, Lord, help them to be confident and comfortable with you by their side, because you are their great counselor, you are their strength, you are their guide, their teacher, you are the way, the truth and the light. And I just pray for everyone listening, Lord, that they would be moved to serve, moved to act, to bring glory to your kingdom.
