- 0:00Speaker 2: Tepper is back with us now.
- 0:02Speaker 1: And I started to ask you a cataclysmic statement about
- 0:05Speaker 1: high school football.
- 0:06Speaker 2: And we'll get to that in a moment.
- 0:08Speaker 1: But let me start off with, well, to Longhorn fans,
- 0:13Speaker 1: it's been a cataclysmic fortnight. But with regard to the
- 0:17Speaker 1: rest of that, with the Dave Campbell's Texas football power poll,
- 0:21Speaker 1: Texas tag number one, Houston number two, SMU number three
- 0:25Speaker 1: in that poll. And what a big game, Houston at Utah,
- 0:30Speaker 1: to draw ESPN's college game day out there.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Yeah, how about that? I mean, you know, in the
- 0:35Speaker 3: state of Texas, we obviously talk about the big flagship
- 0:38Speaker 3: programs of Texas and Texas A & M, you know,
- 0:40Speaker 3: add in maybe Texas Tech there. But the rise of Houston,
- 0:44Speaker 3: you know, I know you and I have been talking
- 0:45Speaker 3: about it since the offseason, about how, you know, what
- 0:48Speaker 3: Willie Fritz is doing there at Houston is remarkable.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Really special.
- 0:52Speaker 3: And it might be flying under the radar. You know,
- 0:54Speaker 3: I know that there was some frustration a couple of
- 0:56Speaker 3: weeks ago when, when, you know, a nationally ranked Houston team,
- 1:00Speaker 3: you know, played in front of a relatively small crowd
- 1:03Speaker 3: there at their stadium. And I think that, you know,
- 1:06Speaker 3: people got started to not pay attention to what this
- 1:09Speaker 3: team looks like, because they have been absolutely exceptional. And
- 1:12Speaker 3: I'll tell you, The Conor Wegman story is a.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Really remarkable one.
- 1:18Speaker 3: We put him on the cover of our magazine back
- 1:20Speaker 3: in 2024, famously with Quinn Ewers, with kind of the
- 1:26Speaker 3: renewal of the A & M and Texas rivalry.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Well, your mileage may vary. I know Texas fans have
- 1:33Speaker 4: their feelings about Quinn Ewers, and A & M fans
- 1:36Speaker 4: certainly have their feelings about Conor Wegman.
- 1:38Speaker 3: But for Wegman to land on his feet, In the
- 1:41Speaker 3: way that he has there at Houston and really blossom
- 1:43Speaker 3: into the guy that we thought he could be.
- 1:46Speaker 4: He's really impressive.
- 1:47Speaker 3: I mean, we've seen this since he was at Bridgeland,
- 1:49Speaker 3: kind of tearing it up there in Cyprus. And now
- 1:52Speaker 3: he's turned into a real certified, you know, field general
- 1:56Speaker 3: out there for the Cougs. And he's got a great
- 1:58Speaker 3: opportunity to have a big showcase matchup there in Cyprus.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Salt Lake City against a really good Utah team, an
- 2:06Speaker 3: opportunity to make some noise.
- 2:08Speaker 4: And I think when you're.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Talking about what this team has looked like and what
- 2:12Speaker 3: Willie Fritz has built.
- 2:13Speaker 4: There, you know, it's only the beginning.
- 2:15Speaker 3: I mean, you remember they brought in the number one
- 2:17Speaker 3: quarterback in the state last year and Keyshawn Henderson.
- 2:20Speaker 4: He's waiting in the wings.
- 2:22Speaker 3: There's something building there in the third ward. And, you know,
- 2:26Speaker 3: I think that that's one of the, it's probably an opportunity,
- 2:29Speaker 3: I think, this week for a lot of people who
- 2:32Speaker 3: may not have necessarily know what's been going on at
- 2:34Speaker 3: Houston to get a look at what is a really.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Darn good ball club.
- 2:38Speaker 1: You know, what's interesting is that they have this huge
- 2:41Speaker 1: test at Utah on Saturday. And then they're open, they
- 2:45Speaker 1: have an open date to go trick-or-treating on Halloween. And
- 2:48Speaker 1: then after that, I think it's very manageable for them.
- 2:51Speaker 1: They have Cincinnati at home, maybe a tricky trip to
- 2:54Speaker 1: Boulder to play Colorado on that Friday night there. It's
- 2:57Speaker 1: never guaranteed we go to Morgantown, but they got to
- 2:59Speaker 1: go there. And then they finished with Baylor. I mean,
- 3:02Speaker 1: there's a real chance that they could increase their opportunity.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Two games come to mind for me, Tep, on the
- 3:08Speaker 1: collegiate level in this state right now, other than obviously
- 3:11Speaker 1: what I have to deal with on a week-by-week basis
- 3:13Speaker 1: with Texas. But the Houston-Utah game, And then SMU has
- 3:20Speaker 1: Notre Dame late in the season. We're already hearing conversation
- 3:22Speaker 1: because of the way that Notre Dame-BYU game ended, that
- 3:26Speaker 1: if Notre Dame loses to Miami, then the SMU game
- 3:31Speaker 1: becomes a must-win for them, or they're probably not getting
- 3:34Speaker 1: in the playoff. And SMU, on the other hand, can
- 3:38Speaker 1: continue to upgrade its profile by continuing to win leading
- 3:41Speaker 1: up to that game in South Bend in late November.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I think right now when you take a look
- 3:46Speaker 3: at what SMU's got in front of them, they play
- 3:49Speaker 3: at home against Cal, they're at Syracuse, and they're home
- 3:52Speaker 3: against Virginia Tech. You would think that SMU should be
- 3:56Speaker 3: able to take care of business against those three.
- 3:58Speaker 4: And then you're going to.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Have a really dynamic and really interesting kind of twofer.
- 4:06Speaker 3: for them when they take welcome in Wake Forest and
- 4:09Speaker 3: they go to Notre Dame. Look, at that point, Wake Forest,
- 4:13Speaker 3: by the way, I don't know if people know this,
- 4:14Speaker 3: 17th ranked team in the country, that would be back-to-back
- 4:19Speaker 3: top 20 wins, assuming those teams kind of stay in
- 4:22Speaker 3: that kind of echelon, which I think, you know, for
- 4:26Speaker 3: all we kind of, the wailing and gnashing of teeth
- 4:29Speaker 3: earlier this season when SMU, you know, dropped a game,
- 4:33Speaker 3: quite frankly, that I don't think they should have when
- 4:35Speaker 3: they played poorly at Louisville, right? Well, they can win
- 4:39Speaker 3: it all back and everything's still right there in front
- 4:40Speaker 3: of them. You can make the argument that they still
- 4:42Speaker 3: control their destiny. Certainly, you know, if they were to
- 4:45Speaker 3: continue to roll and play in the ACC championship game,
- 4:49Speaker 3: but even then, as an at-large, you know, that would
- 4:52Speaker 3: be a team that... As a music team, I think
- 4:54Speaker 3: early in the year, we may have been ready to
- 4:56Speaker 3: ride off, but because of the way that the schedule
- 4:58Speaker 3: is broken and with those two big high-profile games late
- 5:01Speaker 3: in the season, that can give them an opportunity to
- 5:04Speaker 3: vault back into that national conversation. Those are two of
- 5:08Speaker 3: the monster games left on the schedule to determine what
- 5:12Speaker 3: the Texas representation may.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Look like in the college football playoff. Right now, it
- 5:16Speaker 4: doesn't look like A & M is going to be participating.
- 5:18Speaker 3: It Tech, obviously, looking very good there in the Big 12.
- 5:21Speaker 3: You know, Texas, their season is teetering, as I know
- 5:24Speaker 3: you guys have been talking a lot about. But two
- 5:26Speaker 3: programs that, you know, here in Houston and SMU, I
- 5:29Speaker 3: think have an opportunity to really crash the party.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Talking football in the Lone Star State with Greg Tepper, Editor-in-Chief,
- 5:35Speaker 1: Dave Campbell's Texas Football here on AM13 Under the Zone.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Let's jump to high school and we'll start off with,
- 5:40Speaker 1: it happened yesterday, The Texas High School Football Hall of
- 5:43Speaker 1: Fame announced its class for 2027. And for folks who
- 5:46Speaker 1: don't know the way this works is they induct a
- 5:50Speaker 1: player from each decade. It starts from 1969 and before.
- 5:56Speaker 1: So that would also include folks even prior to the
- 5:58Speaker 1: decade of the 60s. That enshrining will be Joe Barnes
- 6:02Speaker 1: from Reagan County. Then in the 70s, Doug Dawson from
- 6:05Speaker 1: Houston Memorial and former Texas Longhorn.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Richmond Webb.
- 6:09Speaker 1: From Roosevelt High in Dallas and Texas A & M
- 6:12Speaker 1: for the 80s Casey Hampton a warm spot many Longhorn
- 6:17Speaker 1: fans hearts from Galveston Ball Chase Daniel from South Lake
- 6:20Speaker 1: Carroll certainly one of the most decorated recruits coming out
- 6:23Speaker 1: of high school played at your alma mater Missouri and
- 6:26Speaker 1: then Had a career as a backup in the NFL,
- 6:28Speaker 1: now working college telecast. Baker Mayfield will go in. Of course,
- 6:33Speaker 1: he was the final quarterback in the drive for five
- 6:35Speaker 1: for Lake Travis. And then you have two coaches, John Outlaw,
- 6:41Speaker 1: the late John Outlaw from Lufkin and Johnny Tusa from
- 6:43Speaker 1: Waco High, both definitely deserving. And then the Dave Campbell's
- 6:47Speaker 1: Texas football, you might say, the major domo of that,
- 6:54Speaker 1: your balls, Adam Hochfelder, getting in on the Dave Campbell
- 6:57Speaker 1: contributor to the game induction.
- 7:00Speaker 2: How about that?
- 7:02Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, the Hall of Fame has a special
- 7:04Speaker 3: place around here at Dave Campbell's Texas football. You know,
- 7:07Speaker 3: Dave Campbell was really instrumental in, I don't.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Want to overstate it, but in a lot of ways,
- 7:13Speaker 4: he kind of.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Saved the Hall of Fame and kind of floundering here
- 7:16Speaker 3: in the DFW Metroplex. he really kind of rallied the
- 7:20Speaker 3: troops to move it to Waco, to give it the
- 7:24Speaker 3: kind of prominence that needs it. And that's the Texas
- 7:26Speaker 3: Sports Hall of Fame, not just the Texas High School
- 7:28Speaker 3: Football Hall of Fame, although that's obviously a subsidiary of
- 7:30Speaker 3: the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
- 7:32Speaker 4: And so, you know, obviously that, you know.
- 7:34Speaker 3: The Dave Campbell contributing to the Game Award is how you, Mr. Way,
- 7:38Speaker 3: are in the Hall of Fame there in Waco. And then,
- 7:41Speaker 3: you know, so I know that means a lot for
- 7:43Speaker 3: Adam to be able to go in there.
- 7:45Speaker 4: And what is the star-studded class, right? You know, you
- 7:47Speaker 4: mentioned Casey Hampton.
- 7:52Speaker 3: There in Austin was an absolute juggernaut in Galveston, just
- 7:56Speaker 3: like a force of nature in Galveston. And it's a
- 7:59Speaker 3: long time coming, I think, for him to get in.
- 8:02Speaker 3: You know, Chase Daniel, a guy who, of course, was,
- 8:05Speaker 3: you know, one of those most decorated quarterbacks there in
- 8:09Speaker 3: those early 2000 South Lake Carroll teams under Todd Dodge.
- 8:14Speaker 3: And then, you know, obviously went off and had a
- 8:16Speaker 3: terrific college career.
- 8:18Speaker 4: You know, Peter Mayfield, still.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Cooking, still doing what he's doing there. And obviously part
- 8:22Speaker 3: of that drive for five there at Lake Travis. I
- 8:24Speaker 3: would draw special attention to the two coaches because you
- 8:26Speaker 3: kind of hit the nail on the head. I think
- 8:28Speaker 3: John Outlaw and Johnny Too said this is long overdue
- 8:31Speaker 3: for these two guys.
- 8:31Speaker 4: You want to talk about guys who are.
- 8:34Speaker 3: legends in their towns. Johnny Tusa there in Waco is
- 8:39Speaker 3: as respected a high school football coach as you may
- 8:42Speaker 3: ever see. And then Don Outlaw out there in Lufkin
- 8:45Speaker 3: is the name. Everyone's trying to be Don Outlaw. Those
- 8:49Speaker 3: are the big shoes to fill. So it's a special class.
- 8:51Speaker 3: I think the Hall of Fame did a fantastic job
- 8:55Speaker 3: of bringing in an outstanding class worthy of the Hall
- 8:58Speaker 3: of Fame. And the fact that our president gets to
- 9:01Speaker 3: have a small part in it, I think is pretty.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Special for Yeah, well, and he's been very instrumental in
- 9:07Speaker 1: how this game has grown by leaps and bounds in
- 9:10Speaker 1: terms of what's done online, what you and the crew
- 9:12Speaker 1: do with TexasFootball.com and what he's done also with the
- 9:16Speaker 1: crew in getting all those live telecasts. There's two things
- 9:20Speaker 1: that come to mind with the two coaches going in.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Johnny Two said, just to let folks know how important
- 9:26Speaker 1: he is, We had Derek Johnson on Sark's radio show
- 9:30Speaker 1: a few weeks back. And DJ, of course, played for
- 9:33Speaker 1: Coach Toose at Waco High. And DJ was an All-American
- 9:36Speaker 1: at Texas. He was an All-Pro with the Chiefs. And
- 9:38Speaker 1: he was being inducted into the Chiefs Ring of Honor.
- 9:41Speaker 1: He insisted on flying Coach Toose and his wife. up
- 9:45Speaker 1: to Kansas City to be there. That's how much he said,
- 9:47Speaker 1: I never would have gotten to the things, I never
- 9:50Speaker 1: would have accomplished what I did at Texas, and I
- 9:52Speaker 1: certainly wouldn't have accomplished what I did at the Chiefs
- 9:54Speaker 1: without Coach Tusa. So that tells you one thing about
- 9:57Speaker 1: what Johnny Tusa's done. And then John Outlaw, he's like,
- 10:00Speaker 1: to tell the story you know he John Outlaw was
- 10:02Speaker 1: really good at a lot of places including Sherman and
- 10:05Speaker 1: then he gets to Lufkin and I'll always remember this
- 10:09Speaker 1: because on opening night of either his first or second
- 10:14Speaker 1: season I think it's his first season They shocked John Tyler,
- 10:18Speaker 1: who was, I think, number one in the state on
- 10:19Speaker 1: that Friday night. And this was before you were on
- 10:21Speaker 1: board with us with the scoreboard live show.
- 10:24Speaker 2: So we tried to get him.
- 10:26Speaker 1: To go on live with us, like you and I
- 10:28Speaker 1: have done so many times in the years with a
- 10:30Speaker 1: winning coach, and we're trying to get him on by phone,
- 10:32Speaker 1: and somebody called him, and he answered the phone at
- 10:37Speaker 1: his house, he couldn't get him at the field house,
- 10:38Speaker 1: it was getting kind of late, and they got him
- 10:40Speaker 1: at home, and they said, hey, we'd like for you
- 10:43Speaker 1: to come on high school scoreboard live with us, and
- 10:46Speaker 1: he said, I'm going to bed, I'm not doing it,
- 10:48Speaker 1: and they said, well, you know, Craig Wade told us
- 10:50Speaker 1: told us to call you that he'd really like to
- 10:54Speaker 1: have you.
- 10:54Speaker 2: He goes, tell Craig I love him. I'm going to bed.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Good night.
- 10:58Speaker 1: And I'll always remember that about John. He was that
- 11:01Speaker 1: kind of guy. Great dude off of that.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Okay. Now.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Let's get to the game log. Before we have the
- 11:09Speaker 1: technical snafu, I was going to ask you how cataclysmic
- 11:12Speaker 1: a week this could be with some of the selections
- 11:15Speaker 1: on this. Good piece for folks online.
- 11:18Speaker 2: If you're not a subscriber, you can.
- 11:21Speaker 1: You can subscribe at TexasFootball.com and read the piece that
- 11:26Speaker 1: Matt Stepp did on Gerald and Stephenville. We'll find out
- 11:29Speaker 1: how for real Gerald is. I think the computer likes
- 11:32Speaker 1: Stephenville by 13. But I want to ask you about
- 11:34Speaker 1: another game. Now, this is not included in the three
- 11:38Speaker 1: games where you have to pick one. I could have
- 11:41Speaker 1: been really mean and done this, but I like you
- 11:43Speaker 1: too much. We're too close, and it would not have
- 11:46Speaker 1: been fair for you to do this. But I want
- 11:48Speaker 1: you to tell me what you know about Dallas Life
- 11:53Speaker 1: Oak Cliff. They're 7-0. They're playing Pilot Point, who's good,
- 11:59Speaker 1: but the computer likes Life Oak Cliff by four points,
- 12:04Speaker 1: I think. And the reason why I ask you this
- 12:07Speaker 1: is because you tell me if you can remember, I
- 12:09Speaker 1: cannot remember in football, I know obviously in basketball, but
- 12:13Speaker 1: in football, I cannot remember a situation where a charter
- 12:18Speaker 1: school was ranked as high as Dallas Life Oak Cliff
- 12:21Speaker 1: is in 3A Division I.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Yeah, look, they're a serious team.
- 12:28Speaker 3: You know, Life Oak Cliff is one of those teams
- 12:30Speaker 3: that is absolutely star-studded. They have a junior quarterback, Cameron Phillips,
- 12:34Speaker 3: who is lighting it up right now. He has got
- 12:37Speaker 3: 42 total touchdowns on the season, already a 2,000-yard passer.
- 12:43Speaker 3: And here's the other thing, though. The other thing about it,
- 12:46Speaker 3: and probably where they're most notable, is that they had
- 12:50Speaker 3: a game earlier this season which made some headlines about uh,
- 12:53Speaker 3: where they played at Bonham and Bonham's a proud program. Uh, that,
- 12:57Speaker 3: that was, that was, I think trying to go out
- 12:59Speaker 3: there and, and, and, and kind of get some, get
- 13:01Speaker 3: some reps in, uh, and the game got out of hand.
- 13:03Speaker 3: They scored 105 points. Uh, I haven't had a hundred
- 13:06Speaker 3: point game, uh, in a UIL game in, uh, boy,
- 13:11Speaker 3: since the thirties, since the forties, maybe it's been a
- 13:14Speaker 3: long time. There's just kind of that, that understanding that
- 13:16Speaker 3: you don't get over there. From what I understand, the
- 13:18Speaker 3: coaches were, I think there was an, audible late and
- 13:21Speaker 3: the coaches weren't too pleased with it. And anyway, I
- 13:24Speaker 3: don't want to point fingers here, but there's that.
- 13:26Speaker 4: That's kind of one of the things that kind of
- 13:28Speaker 4: draws your eyes to them.
- 13:29Speaker 3: One of the things that when I look at this
- 13:34Speaker 3: really love them. But the thing that I've, you know,
- 13:36Speaker 3: in working with Jerry Forrest's outstanding computer program for a
- 13:39Speaker 3: long time, I can tell you that one of the
- 13:42Speaker 3: things the computer likes is dominance. While there have been
- 13:45Speaker 3: few teams as dominant in the state as them, they
- 13:48Speaker 3: have an average margin of victory of 39 points in
- 13:51Speaker 3: their games. I do think that when they play Pilot Point,
- 13:55Speaker 3: we'll find out more about in their next three games
- 13:59Speaker 3: than we have in their previous seven games combined.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Because Right now, their best win of the year.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Is probably over Dallas Christian. That was also their closest
- 14:07Speaker 3: game of the year. And hey, don't apologize for beating
- 14:10Speaker 3: Mike Wheeler, who is one of the most winningest coaches
- 14:13Speaker 3: in Texas high school football history there. But the next
- 14:15Speaker 3: three games are Pilot Point, Gunner, and Pottsboro. Those will be,
- 14:18Speaker 3: in my estimation, the three best teams that they have played.
- 14:22Speaker 3: If they finish 10-0, I mean, we got to start
- 14:24Speaker 3: having a really serious conversation about Welton Johnson's ball club.
- 14:28Speaker 3: I think right now I'm still in wait and see mode.
- 14:31Speaker 4: And if they go out there and they beat, if
- 14:32Speaker 4: they beat.
- 14:33Speaker 3: You know, I'll point this week, especially on the road,
- 14:36Speaker 3: then we're going to start having a really interesting conversation
- 14:39Speaker 3: about how deep the Lions can go there and create
- 14:41Speaker 3: a vision one.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Okay.
- 14:42Speaker 2: All right.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Now to the meanest thing we do every week. I
- 14:45Speaker 1: give you three games. You pick one to transport it.
- 14:47Speaker 1: By the way, which is your game this week?
- 14:49Speaker 3: We have got Duncanville and Wasahatchee.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Okay, good, good.
- 14:53Speaker 1: All right, so we're recusing you from that game then.
- 14:57Speaker 2: And I was.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Really torn between going with that game or CE King
- 15:04Speaker 1: and North Shore. So you've made the decision for me.
- 15:06Speaker 1: All right, CE King and North Shore is.
- 15:08Speaker 2: One of the games.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I'm not even putting Westlake Lake Travis on there for
- 15:12Speaker 1: you because this roster is so dynamic this weekend. The
- 15:18Speaker 1: other two games I'm going to give you, are Bremond
- 15:22Speaker 1: at Burton and at the 181 level, Hermley at defending
- 15:28Speaker 1: state champion, Jayton.
- 15:30Speaker 4: You know what? I thought you were going to do that.
- 15:32Speaker 4: I thought he was going to throw a six-man game.
- 15:35Speaker 4: By the way, it's a really nice week in 1A.
- 15:37Speaker 2: It is.
- 15:38Speaker 4: A really fun week.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Look, I think Burton and Bremond is really flying under
- 15:44Speaker 3: the radar. I'm a big fan of this Bremond team.
- 15:48Speaker 3: What's He's been able to do, you know, off to
- 15:50Speaker 3: a fantastic start. Anytime they've got a coach's kid at
- 15:54Speaker 3: the quarterback spot, I'm going to be in. And they've
- 15:56Speaker 3: got Sam Kozowski running the show there. He has been
- 15:59Speaker 3: electrifying for them as the junior.
- 16:01Speaker 4: They run the ball.
- 16:01Speaker 3: They've got a running back named Tank Scott. I mean,
- 16:03Speaker 3: that's just... Fantastic. Jaden and Hermley is going to be
- 16:08Speaker 3: a lot of fun because.
- 16:08Speaker 4: I think we're going to, you know, Jaden is kind
- 16:10Speaker 4: of a known commodity, even moving up to 1A Division I.
- 16:14Speaker 3: They had that kind of wild last play loss to
- 16:17Speaker 3: Newcastle a couple of weeks ago, but they are 6-1
- 16:20Speaker 3: and very good. But Hermley is a team I've got
- 16:22Speaker 3: my eye on because this is the real test for them.
- 16:24Speaker 2: They're unbeatable.
- 16:28Speaker 4: To be the toughest game of the year on the road.
- 16:30Speaker 4: We will learn a lot about the Cardinals.
- 16:32Speaker 3: My pick has got to be North Shore CE King, though.
- 16:35Speaker 3: This is, in my estimation, the best game, the game
- 16:37Speaker 3: of the year at Houston so far.
- 16:38Speaker 4: The defending 6A Division.
- 16:40Speaker 3: I state champs They're in North Shore, the reigning 6A
- 16:43Speaker 3: Division II state runner-up in C.E. King, which has the
- 16:46Speaker 3: fastest man in Texas in Dylan Mitchell at the controls.
- 16:50Speaker 3: And then North Shore has gotten such a dynamic electrifying
- 16:54Speaker 3: defense led.
- 16:55Speaker 4: By Deshaun Royal.
- 16:56Speaker 3: And this is an east side rivalry. These two programs
- 16:59Speaker 3: are separated by about seven miles. They don't like each other.
- 17:03Speaker 4: And in fact.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Aubrey Johnson, the wide receiver for CE King last year,
- 17:08Speaker 3: you may know.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Him as the offensive MVP of the state championship game
- 17:12Speaker 4: for North Shore last year.
- 17:14Speaker 3: So there's some, you know, there's going to be some
- 17:19Speaker 3: chippiness in this game. I think it's going to be
- 17:21Speaker 3: a highly high-octane ballgame, and I think it's going to
- 17:25Speaker 3: be a whale of a game that will tell us
- 17:26Speaker 3: a lot about how Region 3 ends.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Up shaking out.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Are you saying that these teams will each be in
- 17:30Speaker 1: their feelings a little bit on Friday?
- 17:32Speaker 4: Huh?
- 17:33Speaker 3: It'll be an emotional contest, and it'll be up to
- 17:36Speaker 3: these two outstanding coaching staffs to wrangle those emotions.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Which of these two teams has the better chance of
- 17:45Speaker 1: pulling off a surprise? Gerald at home against number one
- 17:49Speaker 1: and defending state champ Stephenville, or Pleasant Grove having to
- 17:53Speaker 1: go to Carthage?
- 17:55Speaker 3: You know, it's interesting. Both of them, I think, are
- 17:57Speaker 3: really on the table. You know, Pleasant Grove, they had
- 18:00Speaker 3: that one loss to Gilmer, and the concern that I
- 18:02Speaker 3: have for them is that they gave up 300 yards
- 18:05Speaker 3: rushing to Gilmer. Well, you know, this is not a
- 18:08Speaker 3: Carthage team that runs the ball especially well.
- 18:10Speaker 4: They throw the ball really well. Jacob Dixon, J.D.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Edwards.
- 18:13Speaker 4: But that kind of.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Plays into the hands of Pleasant Grove. So if you
- 18:16Speaker 3: believe that styles make fights, that's one thing. Although going
- 18:19Speaker 3: to Penelope County and getting a win is probably a
- 18:22Speaker 3: lot to ask. One thing I am interested in, this
- 18:26Speaker 3: Gerald Stephenville game I think is a live ball.
- 18:29Speaker 4: I really do.
- 18:29Speaker 3: I think Gerald's for real. Alan Hare is a guy
- 18:34Speaker 3: who's been around the block. He knows how to coach
- 18:36Speaker 3: these guys up, and he has got them cooking right now.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Running the ball exceptionally well. Alan Hare is a guy
- 18:43Speaker 3: who you don't want to see on the other side.
- 18:45Speaker 3: And look, when they get the slot tee going, Stephenville
- 18:48Speaker 3: doesn't see.
- 18:49Speaker 4: A lot of the slot tee.
- 18:50Speaker 3: That is primarily a South Texas thing. You know, and
- 18:54Speaker 3: Alan Hare has brought that to Gerald, and they are
- 18:57Speaker 3: cruising with it right now.
- 18:58Speaker 4: A real test for the defense. I think this is.
- 19:01Speaker 3: A live ball there at Cougar Stadium in Gerald that
- 19:05Speaker 3: it would not be surprised if this game is tight
- 19:07Speaker 3: in the fourth quarter.
- 19:08Speaker 2: I'm with you there.
- 19:09Speaker 1: He's Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Have fun with that Waxhatchee-Dunkerville thing, and we'll do it
- 19:14Speaker 1: again next week.
- 19:15Speaker 4: All right, looking forward to it, pal.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 19:18Speaker 1: All right, that's Greg Tepper. from Dave Campbell's Texas football magazine.
- 19:22Speaker 1: I'm with him on this. I think Coach Hare is
- 19:24Speaker 1: an outstanding coach in the way they run the slot
- 19:26Speaker 1: tee at Gerald.
- 19:28Speaker 2: We'll see if they can hang with Stephenville. It's a
- 19:30Speaker 2: tall task, no doubt about it.
- 19:32Speaker 1: All right, we have more coming up when we continue
- 19:34Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the
- 19:36Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app.
