- 0:11Hello friends, it is Sean here and it is a happy Friday to you.
- 0:18Here we are at the end. Of another week.
- 0:21That is our first week in Isaiah.
- 0:23And it wasn't too scary, was it? No, I'm not going to leave you
- 0:27all on your lonesome floundering through this enormous profit.
- 0:31We will try to get a little bit of context each day as we read
- 0:35through it, so that we can make sense of the enormity and where
- 0:38we are in the midst of it all but today.
- 0:41Today we get to put down Isaiah and come back to the Psalms, and
- 0:46we begin the third book of the Psalms today.
- 0:50And this is a Psalm, A Psalm of Asaf.
- 0:54This is one of the few wisdom psalms.
- 0:56So it's a bit like the Proverbs. This is going to be full of Asaf
- 1:01and his observations about the things that he has seen to be
- 1:06true in life. This is not a prescription.
- 1:09You can't take these to the bank and say ha ha, Psalm 73, Sean
- 1:14said. It's like the proverbs, and I
- 1:15know the proverbs of God's truth.
- 1:17I know this must be the way it's going to be.
- 1:20No, this is, this is an observation about what the
- 1:23author has noted about the way they see the world being.
- 1:28So join me as we read through this wonderful Psalm Psalm 73.
- 1:45Truly, God is good to Israel, to those whose hearts are pure.
- 1:52But As for me, I almost lost my footing.
- 1:55My feet were slipping and I was almost gone, For I envied the
- 2:00proud when I saw them prosper. Despite their wickedness, they
- 2:05seemed to live such painless lives.
- 2:08Their bodies are so healthy and strong, they don't have troubles
- 2:12like other people. They're not plagued with
- 2:14problems like everyone else. They wear pride like a jeweled
- 2:19necklace and clothe themselves with cruelty.
- 2:24These fat cats have everything their hearts could ever wish
- 2:28for. They scoff and speak only evil.
- 2:32In their pride, they seek to crush others.
- 2:36They boast against the very heavens, and their words strut
- 2:39throughout the earth. And so the people are dismayed
- 2:43and confused, drinking in all their words.
- 2:47What does God know, they ask. Does the Most High even know
- 2:52what's happening? Look at these wicked people,
- 2:55enjoying a life of ease while their riches multiply.
- 3:00Did I keep my heart pure for nothing?
- 3:03Did I keep myself innocent for no reason?
- 3:06I get nothing but trouble all day long, every morning.
- 3:11Brings me pain. If I had really spoken this way
- 3:15to others, I would have been a traitor to your people.
- 3:20So I tried to understand why the wicked prosper, but what a
- 3:24difficult task it is. Then I went into your sanctuary,
- 3:29oh God. And I finally understood the
- 3:32destiny of the wicked. Truly, you put them on a
- 3:36slippery path and send them sliding over the Cliff to
- 3:40destruction. In an instant they are destroyed
- 3:44completely, swept away by terrors.
- 3:47When you arise, oh Lord, you will laugh at their silly ideas
- 3:53as a person laughs at dreams in the morning.
- 3:57Then I realized that my heart was bitter and I was all torn up
- 4:02inside. I was so foolish and ignorant.
- 4:06I must have seemed like a senseless animal to you.
- 4:10Yet I still belong to you. You hold my right hand.
- 4:15You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious
- 4:19destiny. Whom have I in heaven but you?
- 4:24I desire you more than anything on earth.
- 4:29My health may fail and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains
- 4:34the strength of my heart. He is mine forever, those who
- 4:39desert him. Will perish for you, destroy
- 4:42those who abandon you. But As for me, how good it is to
- 4:48be near God. I have made the sovereign Lord
- 4:51my shelter, and I will tell everyone about the wonderful
- 4:56things you do. Oh,
- 5:09Jesus, thank you that you love us even when we are clueless and
- 5:14ridiculous. I love how this song talks about
- 5:18us being like senseless animals when we go on and on as foolish
- 5:25and ignorant people. Still you love us, and still you
- 5:30hold us close and you wait. You wait for wisdom to come.
- 5:36Thank you that you're so patient with us.
- 5:39Thank you that you forgive us again and again and again
- 5:43because boy, do we need it. And when it seems like people
- 5:49turn their back on you and just win at the game of life, just
- 5:56draw our hearts back to you. We don't need to compare
- 5:59ourselves with them. We don't need to compete with
- 6:01them. We can just lean into you and
- 6:06trust in you as the sovereign Lord of the universe who loves
- 6:13us. And holds us close.
- 6:16And our reward in you is just so much greater than anything we
- 6:21see other people enjoying now. We love you, Jesus, and we're so
- 6:27grateful for you. And it's in your namely, pray.
- 6:31Amen.
