Latest / Boundary Corner Podcast / Know The Enemy: Vanderbilt
Transcript
- 0:56As we get into know the enemy, it is the Vanderbilt Commodores.
- 1:00They're coming in want to know after a 45 three win versus the
- 1:05mighty Charleston Southern. Yes, I do say that
- 1:09sarcastically. So, yeah.
- 1:12But you know, we we the best thing about doing this is kind
- 1:17of reintroducing yourself to guys because a lot of the
- 1:19players they had last year are still here this year.
- 1:23And let's just talk about it's Tim Beck, Jerry kills offense.
- 1:27Best thing is this year we got tape on we have tape of what
- 1:31they're probably going to do unlike last year, although you
- 1:34thought we know we're don't do. But obviously when you're
- 1:38talking about Vanderbilt, you got to talk about what is he
- 1:40like 32 now? He keeps applying for years of
- 1:43eligibility and they keep random eligibility.
- 1:47I'm I'm trying to be a joker here, but Diego Pavia, you know,
- 1:53guy burned us last year, got us on numerous things started off
- 1:57hot this year against VFCS foe throwing for 275 and three
- 2:03touchdowns. But you know, if you don't know
- 2:08his game, Brian Talley, I don't know which one are y'all going
- 2:12to talk about him? But y'all go ahead and kind of
- 2:14get that little high level stuff on him and Sheldon kick in
- 2:19anything you got. Yeah.
- 2:21I mean, we know Diego Pavia, man, he's a dual threat
- 2:24quarterback. He's got that that that moxie in
- 2:27the pocket, that pocket presence.
- 2:30He's what you call a gamer. He's not really physically
- 2:32imposing, but he makes plays, especially with his legs.
- 2:34We saw him a lot last year, you know, running kind of a triple
- 2:37option look out of the shotgun down in Nashville.
- 2:42That really, really gave us a ton of problems and we couldn't
- 2:45get off the field consistently and it ultimately bit us in the
- 2:48end there at the end of the game as well.
- 2:50Tell me what you got. He's just probably just a
- 2:55nightmare because he's just a football player.
- 2:57I mean, he's a good quarterback, but you know, when you watch him
- 3:00play, he's not scared of anything, not not too big, but
- 3:03you know, he he's going to go get it.
- 3:06You know, he's making people miss in the open field.
- 3:09You know, he's very heady when he gets along that sideline.
- 3:13He knows right when to take that step out.
- 3:15So you hit him late and he makes the he makes throws.
- 3:19You know, he's got some players over there.
- 3:22We'll talk about a couple of them here in just a minute, but
- 3:26definitely, definitely going to be we'll have our hands full.
- 3:29But I say all that to say different type of quarterback
- 3:33than Sellers, but he's not better than sellers.
- 3:37Sellers is not, you know, I don't think he's as good as they
- 3:40hype him up to be. I don't know if he's the number
- 3:43one player that like they saying, but different type of
- 3:48quarterback. But I don't think if we can keep
- 3:50sellers in the pocket a little bit, we can kind of keep Pavi in
- 3:53there. So I'm hoping that we've done
- 3:55some things at him that he hadn't seen.
- 3:57Shove. You got anything on him?
- 3:59Yeah, last year he had the 4th best PFF grade when throwing
- 4:02from a clean pocket, which is considered one of the more
- 4:06predictive and stable stats for for evaluating quarterback play
- 4:10is pocket, you know, pocket presence.
- 4:12The other quarterbacks on that list, Cam Board, Jackson, Dart
- 4:17Shooter, Sanders, all above him. And then Tyler Show, Will Howard
- 4:21and Tommy Castellanos for the next 3.
- 4:23So that's a list of really good quarterbacks, almost all NFL
- 4:27guys or guys that will be in the FL pretty soon.
- 4:30So he is a he's a very calm and imposing presence when he's
- 4:34thrown from the pocket. Yes, he is all righty.
- 4:38And who does he like to throw to?
- 4:41Well, the guy's 64. He's like 245.
- 4:44Talk about Eli stores. He absolutely torched us last
- 4:48year. This year already starting hot 4
- 4:51for 86 against Charleston Southern last weekend.
- 4:55Did not have a touchdown, but averaging 21 1/2, 21 1/2 per
- 5:02reception. And if you go back to the game
- 5:05last year against us, he put up similar numbers.
- 5:07He led them in receiving yards against Vt last year, it was
- 5:13only two for 46, but everybody else was held in check pretty
- 5:18much. I think the next guy was like at
- 5:1930. So he is that guy now.
- 5:23Tally, You played it. You've seen him play.
- 5:26Obviously you've seen him play, you know, in person.
- 5:30You probably watch the Alabama in the Texas game last year.
- 5:34He's a he's a match up nightmare.
- 5:36He's a match up nightmare. Not because he's like he's not
- 5:39like super technical on routes. So he's not going to, you know,
- 5:45Juke you to get open like you see a good wide receiver do.
- 5:48But he just has he's like an NFL tight end, you know what I'm
- 5:53saying? One of those hybrid tight ends
- 5:55that's too fast for certain people to guard him and too big
- 5:58for other people to guard him. So he uses his body to get where
- 6:02he wants to go and he can high point the ball with that big
- 6:06frame. So he's a, he's a nightmare to
- 6:08deal with. We have some people that can
- 6:13deal with him. That's why we play the game.
- 6:15But he's a he, he's going, he's going to be fun to watch.
- 6:18Man, I, I pay attention to tight ends all the time and he's one
- 6:22of those. He's one of those, but like
- 6:26Notre Dame, Penn State type tight ends, you know what I'm
- 6:29saying? Just kind of they should be a
- 6:32wide receiver, but they're so big because I don't see him
- 6:35doing a whole bunch like in the running game where he's just
- 6:38mauling people. You can block a little bit, but
- 6:40he's out there to catch the ball so.
- 6:43Yeah, I mean, he's the guy that went to New Mexico State as a
- 6:45quarterback, so very much a Logan Thomas transition type
- 6:48guy. Yeah, just did it, you know, in
- 6:51college before he got to the NFL, You know, he's got that
- 6:56similar type skill set. Just a a a body can make a play,
- 7:01like I said, like Tally you said, but not very technical,
- 7:04isn't a great blocker. He does.
- 7:05He's not going to do a ton from a blocking standpoint, but he's
- 7:09he's just a playmaker. Yeah, 100% and it showed in last
- 7:14year. You know, I mean, the the really
- 7:16big game last year is he, I mean, he didn't torch us, but he
- 7:22made a couple big plays for us on us last year.
- 7:25His big game last year. Go look at the Alabama tape.
- 7:28He crushed them. He crushed them last year.
- 7:32And I know hopefully everything's going on with
- 7:36Alabama stays because I'm sure Tally's having a nice laugh this
- 7:39week down in his home state with some of those fans.
- 7:44But yeah, we lost Shelton. I don't know what Shelton had.
- 7:47Shelton, did you get? Did you have anything on Stowers
- 7:50before we move on? Nope.
- 7:52Nothing. Nothing on Stowers.
- 7:54OK, let's talk Cedric Alexander, another one of the guys we saw
- 7:58last year. It looks like he is their lead
- 8:01back again for the second straight year.
- 8:06Just 83 yards on on 12 carries on Saturday against Charleston
- 8:10Southern. But you know, last year right at
- 8:15800 yards total from scrimmage. So we definitely have some pass
- 8:17catching ability. Anything else, Brian, just kind
- 8:22of reviewing your notes on it from last year and maybe looking
- 8:24a little bit this year? Yeah, I mean, he's a guy that
- 8:27last year, you know, he he was healthy start of the year, kind
- 8:30of faded as the year went on with some injuries and had some
- 8:33problems with that was a little less effective, a little less
- 8:35explosive. But sounds like he's healthy,
- 8:37rounded into form. You know, when he's in form, he
- 8:40does a good job of making the first person miss and he does
- 8:44have some explosiveness where you can hit the long one on you.
- 8:46So that's that's one thing We're going to have to make sure that
- 8:48we're we're keeping him in check there.
- 8:49And you know, when we look at a team that was struggling with
- 8:52some missed tackles, we want to make sure that we're tackling
- 8:54sure on him in the backfield. He's a good athlete, man.
- 8:57He made a catch in that, in that whatever whoever they just
- 9:01played Charleston Southern, Yeah.
- 9:05Pretty much. Yeah, he made a a hell of a
- 9:08catch for a touchdown. I believe he's just he's a great
- 9:12athlete. You know, it's it's fun to watch
- 9:14him play, You know, not a fan of Vanderbilt, but I'm a fan of
- 9:18good football. And to watch him, watch him do
- 9:21some of the things he's done and then seeing him live last year,
- 9:24you got to go hit him, you got to go hit him.
- 9:27You can't you can't come up and and play around if you want to
- 9:30get him to the ground. So again, I think that we have
- 9:33the defense to do it. It just comes down to what the
- 9:37game plan looks like and do we want it.
- 9:39I think Virginia Tech is one of those one of those teams schools
- 9:45that should always have an underdog mindset no matter what
- 9:50It feels like. You know all we're we're seven
- 9:53point favorite. They should.
- 9:55The coaches should just instill it in their in their team that
- 9:58you're on the everybody should. Always feel disrespected.
- 10:01Always should feel disrespected. Man.
- 10:03This team embarrassed you last year, you know, you went down
- 10:06that of their house and people was falling out and fainting and
- 10:10all type of junk and they had half the stadium closed down
- 10:14because it was raggedy. Whatever.
- 10:17Had it still closed down they they still have an open up the
- 10:19end zone. And listen to freaking country
- 10:22music walking in there and walking out.
- 10:25Hey, ain't done wrong with country music.
- 10:27I hate country music. I don't want to.
- 10:29I don't want to hear Luke Bryan, Brian Luke, Dennis the Menace,
- 10:32whatever their names is. I want to.
- 10:34I want, I want to hear Inner Sandman.
- 10:36How about that coming to Blacksburg, you hear Inner
- 10:42Sandman and I want the team to go out and feel disrespected and
- 10:47go win. And I ain't talking about a
- 10:49three hour stomach ache. I just want you to go.
- 10:52I want to be able to get up going.
- 10:55To get a cigar and a whiskey. And and just be rambling in the
- 11:00pantry for chips and not worried about that play because we
- 11:03already up, you know, 21 points and I ain't worried about them,
- 11:08man, go make a statement. That's what I want.
- 11:09You to do if. Somebody let Luke Bryan know
- 11:11it's on site when Tally sees him.
- 11:15And. Then you know when you go to,
- 11:16you know when you go to Nashville, all of their bars are
- 11:18named after somebody country. They like, oh, this is this is
- 11:22Blake Shelton's place. I'll be like, what kind of food
- 11:24they got in there. I don't care about Blake
- 11:26Shelton's pretty cool. Now.
- 11:27I ain't talking to talk about it about that, but I don't care
- 11:30about all that stuff. I'm trying to get up here to see
- 11:32this game. So we want to hear in a Sandman.
- 11:36That's what we want to hear. Get that?
- 11:37Country music. There you go all right, one last
- 11:41piece wanted to talk about their offensive line.
- 11:44You know looks like they had a set 5 going out there again,
- 11:48they were playing like tally you joking?
- 11:51Literally, I think Charleston Southern was the worst FCS team
- 11:55last year, So it literally was they were playing school for the
- 11:58blind. But something I was listening to
- 12:01and it caught my eye. Excuse me, it caught my ear was
- 12:05they feel some of their fans, some of their podcasters feel
- 12:09that they really do not have a true tackle on the team.
- 12:12It's just a bunch of guards. But with what they do, it makes
- 12:15sense, right? They're running a lot of option.
- 12:17They need to get guys up field. But the one thing that caught my
- 12:21eye stat wise against Charleston Southern, not a good FCS vote.
- 12:27They have three offensive holding penalties.
- 12:30That says something because, Brian, when there's an offensive
- 12:34holding penalty, what does that usually mean to happen to the
- 12:36offensive lineman? You're either getting beat or
- 12:39the refs on some bullshit. And I think at a 28 nothing
- 12:44game, I don't think the ref was on bullshit.
- 12:47So Brian, anything with any of these guys?
- 12:52Shelton, anything, 'cause I I'll be honest, I watched a couple
- 12:55highlights, but it's like, can I really watch this?
- 12:57Can I get anything out of it? No.
- 13:00Yeah, I mean, there there's some ton that jumps out.
- 13:03You know, you kind of highlighted it, right, with, you
- 13:06know, this is going to be a an option focus offense.
- 13:08You don't need a true tackle out there.
- 13:12I mean, there this is still a team that's going to be dropping
- 13:14back. But because of the way they run
- 13:16the football and the way they use that, that rushing attack,
- 13:19you're going to have some built in buffer for a pass rush
- 13:24because of that, except in obvious situations, right.
- 13:27So, you know, you don't need a true like blind side NFL caliber
- 13:32tackle out there. But I, I, they, they do a pretty
- 13:35good job of, of what they do well in that option game.
- 13:40I'm, I'm interested to see if we can do well on those first and
- 13:44second downs and we get them into those more obvious passing
- 13:47situations, how we're able to exploit them.
- 13:51But with with not having, you know, really traditional tackles
- 13:55on that, on that off the line. Shown anything on the old line
- 13:59from your statistical point of view.
- 14:04No, I think anything I'll you can give me back in a SEC.
- 14:07I'm looking up some stuff. All righty.
- 14:09Well, that's the offense, I mean, and we and we know what
- 14:12they are. We all saw it on tape last year.
- 14:15We just got to be better this year because last year The thing
- 14:17is, and we'll all sit here and say it, defense didn't play
- 14:22great last year, but we still should have won the fucking
- 14:25game. That's that's it.
- 14:27Like the defense didn't play great.
- 14:29The offense didn't play great for 1/2 I'd.
- 14:33Say 3/4. I ain't, I'm, I'm not going to
- 14:35give you a half because they were parts of the second-half
- 14:38where they just disappeared at times, you know, like at the
- 14:41end. All right, let's go over to
- 14:43defense. Big story on defense.
- 14:44Can I can I say something about offense while we go?
- 14:47Absolutely, Sir. That's what we're here for.
- 14:49If if Chance Fitzgerald comes to Blacksburg and has a legacy
- 14:54game, I'm going to lose my mind. OK.
- 14:58I'm going to lose my He'd better not even have a catch.
- 15:02He didn't have a catch against Charleston Southern, right?
- 15:06He comes back to black if he comes to Blacksburg and I hear
- 15:09his name called. No disrespect to the kid, but
- 15:12I'm just saying one planet Tech, he ain't playing that game if he
- 15:15comes back. Because see, that's what we
- 15:17normally do. We usually give people who ain't
- 15:20the caliber to have a legacy game.
- 15:23We let him have a legacy game to do from Syracuse last year.
- 15:27I don't even know his name. Fucking catching balls all on
- 15:31us. A kid from Duke probably never
- 15:33caught a football a day in his life.
- 15:35Had a 93 yard bomb the first play.
- 15:38You know different. Nick Harbour doing it.
- 15:41Nick, you know he's a good player.
- 15:43NFLNFL guy, right? If y'all let Chance Fitzgerald
- 15:46come to Blacksburg and head top you, I'm on nut top you.
- 15:51There you go everybody. If I get that, if I get that,
- 15:54no, he did not have the catch against Charleston Southern.
- 15:58He did not have a catch against Charleston Southern.
- 16:01So there is that. Sean, if you got anything on
- 16:05offense, we'll let you kick back in here.
- 16:06I want to click over the defense and talk about kind of a kind of
- 16:09a big story. Last year.
- 16:10Big story was Parkley was trying to save his job.
- 16:13Parkley took over the defense and they played pretty well last
- 16:19year, pretty solid all the way Vanderbilt standards.
- 16:22But he has decided to turn that over and he is turning it over
- 16:24to a guy by the name of Steve Gregory.
- 16:27Well, Steve Gregory is a former Patriot and he was on staff last
- 16:33year, He was a consultant last year at Vanderbilt.
- 16:37He had been in the NFL since 2018, various various positions
- 16:42with the Lions, the Dolphins for about 6 years there.
- 16:46But he's turned the keys over to him.
- 16:48And the one thing if you if y'all noticed and it kind of was
- 16:53pointed out, he likes to be a little bit more aggressive.
- 16:56Where if you've known Clark Lee like a Notre Dame and where he's
- 17:00coached, Clark Lee is a more buttoned up approach.
- 17:03Very, do what you do, stay in your zones and we're going to
- 17:07win the game. This guy's a little bit
- 17:09different. So saying all that, Brian, let's
- 17:16take a look at a few of these players here and I know you and
- 17:18Tally got a couple guys highlighted who you want to
- 17:22start with. Let's start with CJ Hurd, man, I
- 17:27feel like he is the the biggest playmaker on their defense.
- 17:32He's a very sure tackler, big high motor guy and when you look
- 17:38at the back end of that defense, he's really the quarterback of
- 17:41that defense. He's their leader.
- 17:42He's the undisputed leader on the defense.
- 17:46So he's really the biggest difference maker that they have
- 17:48on that side of the ball. Yeah, and he came in as a
- 17:50transfer from FAU and 80 plus tackles last year there.
- 17:57Didn't play much, but found the ball in the air against
- 18:01Charleston's southern 4th pick. So he's already making his voice
- 18:04heard there. And again, it's it's it's why
- 18:07you why you, you love the Portal and why you hate the portal.
- 18:10Because in the old days he was just played at FAU.
- 18:14He would have never made his way up.
- 18:16So yeah, tally who you got you want to talk about here?
- 18:22Mulan's brother? Was it Elan?
- 18:26I don't even know where you're from.
- 18:28I ain't going to try to pronounce that last name, But D
- 18:31Taco. D Taco didn't play in the first
- 18:33game, right? We didn't.
- 18:35Get it in the. First grain, but they they talk
- 18:37a lot about him. Supposed to be a monster in the
- 18:40middle. Hopefully we don't see him.
- 18:44I don't care if we don't see him, but bro is.
- 18:46Big Man 667-3312, something like that.
- 18:49It's a big dude, man. He's a big son of a bitch.
- 18:52Yeah. So we going to have to get him
- 18:54off the line. You know, we're going to have to
- 18:56do some stuff to create some space so we can move.
- 19:01But again, I don't think that he's going to be more talented
- 19:04than what we've seen this past week.
- 19:06And this is what I'll say just about the team in general.
- 19:10No disrespect to Vanderbilt. A lot of talk about Vanderbilt
- 19:15last year, right? I know they're trying to build a
- 19:17program. How many games did they win?
- 19:19Did they win six games? They did.
- 19:22They won six games. They're Virginia Tech, you know
- 19:25what I'm saying? They a lot of people was, but
- 19:30I'm saying a lot of times people last year were talking about
- 19:32them like because they beat Alabama.
- 19:34This ain't the same Alabama as when Nick was there.
- 19:38So no disrespect to Randy. They beat us, they beat Alabama,
- 19:42but they still only won six games.
- 19:43It's true. We've got to go in and punish
- 19:47teams like this. Just go in and play.
- 19:49Go in and do what you do. Don't go in with this
- 19:51conservative shit. If you can get these receivers
- 19:55one-on-one like South Carolina was playing us, they can beat
- 19:58their they can beat their corners.
- 20:01Let them go beat them. Karen.
- 20:04I'm going to say this about Karen too.
- 20:05Before we get to the end of this, I was going to talk a
- 20:07little bit about it on keys to win.
- 20:10If I'm a coach, I'm not a coach, but if I'm a coach in that
- 20:13locker room or somebody recruiting or, you know, one of
- 20:18them young ladies who help with whatever they do.
- 20:21I will pull Karen to the side and say, listen, man, this is
- 20:24what you need to do. You ain't going to the NFL.
- 20:29This is just what I would say. I don't know if he's going to
- 20:31the NFL or not. You ain't going to the NFL.
- 20:33Just get that through your head and think about this.
- 20:35You just need to focus on being the best Virginia Tech
- 20:38quarterback that ever there ever was, right?
- 20:42You may not be, but that's what you need to focus on.
- 20:45You need to be the guy probably like, what's the Texas
- 20:47quarterback that just left Quinn?
- 20:49Yours, right, Yours. Be the guy that gives Virginia
- 20:52Tech back. You go out and you win eight
- 20:56games this year. You can come to Blacksburg and
- 20:58do whatever you want to do. You're always going to have a
- 21:01great name in Blacksburg just because of what you did this
- 21:04year. You ain't got no more years.
- 21:07If you got to run, go run. If you got to throw, go throw.
- 21:11Go back to the bowl game when it was raining.
- 21:16I don't know how many rushing yards Kyron had.
- 21:19And I'm not saying we need to run him like that, but I got so
- 21:22fucking tired of him. And the commentators say, oh,
- 21:25they don't want him to take hits like that.
- 21:28He ain't no he know what he doing it like.
- 21:30He's been playing football a long time.
- 21:32He's about the size of sellers. They weren't saying sellers
- 21:35taking hits. Sellers was getting crushed too.
- 21:37With a he's a strong guy. He's able to get up.
- 21:39Kyron can do that too. And he got.
- 21:43It he's not some injury prone kid.
- 21:45That's, I get it. Y'all are frustrated.
- 21:49Everybody's frustrated because not y'all, but I'm saying the
- 21:52chat, the fans, because I've heard people say, you know,
- 21:55Kyron is this and that Kyron gives us the best chance to win.
- 21:59Kyron just has to go out and beat Kyron.
- 22:01If you got to go and get 10 yards and get out of bounds, go
- 22:04do that. If you got to go get 5 yards and
- 22:07get down, stop going head first, slide and make them hit you and
- 22:10get 15 more yards. Play this game smart.
- 22:13Go out and be the best Virginia Tech quarterback that you can be
- 22:17and let the chips fall where they may because there may be
- 22:20some more inspirations. That may be some NFL in there.
- 22:22But we got to for Kyrie to get to the next level, he's got to
- 22:25win eight games. He's got to turn some heads with
- 22:29the fan base, with the people who are watching him because
- 22:33right now he's an afterthought, you know what I'm saying?
- 22:35When he's playing other, they're going to talk about Diego Pavia
- 22:38more than they talk about Kyrie $10,000 more and he's at your
- 22:42house. When we played at Miami last
- 22:45year, he was pissed off and he went into that game and you
- 22:49could tell that he wanted to show that he was the same
- 22:51caliber as as, as, as Cam Ward. Not saying that he is he's his
- 22:56own quarterback, but I'm saying he should go into every game
- 22:59pissed off and say I'm going to get disrespected.
- 23:03I got to go out and earn every bit of respect I got to get.
- 23:05So if I got to run this motherfucker 50 times a day for
- 23:08us to win, that's what I'm going to do.
- 23:10Because if you go back and look at MM was probably the best to
- 23:13do it at Virginia Tech, he would have 100 yards passing and 100
- 23:17yards rushing. If that's what he had to do to
- 23:19win. Just saying I'm off my soapbox.
- 23:22I'm a let it go he. Won't let it go, Shelton I'm I'm
- 23:27going to wrap this up a little early.
- 23:28I'm going to hit one more player and then we're going to get into
- 23:30keys because tally Cali, I'm assuming you read some stuff and
- 23:34it just set y'all anything offensively, defensively,
- 23:37statistically that is or data wise jumping out to say if we're
- 23:41going to beat them or if they're going to, if they're going to do
- 23:44the unthinkable, it's this. Yeah, not really because you
- 23:49know, they they had some high PFF graders like mouse capers,
- 23:52one of their they're edge guys, third highest graded SEC player
- 23:56right now. But again, only one opponent.
- 23:59It was really bad. So I don't know how much to make
- 24:00of that. But I would say look at some of
- 24:02the analytics. They're they're pretty balanced
- 24:04overall offensively and defensively, you know, top 45 in
- 24:07both, you know, both metrics. So I don't know, I mean, they're
- 24:11they're kind of a little, a little bit maybe what Vt was
- 24:13last year, just kind of good, good on both sides of the ball,
- 24:16but not like a lead. So yeah, I just, I, I don't know
- 24:20what to make of them yet, just based on the small sample size
- 24:22and the fact that they, they haven't really played anyone,
- 24:25anyone of notes. Got it.
- 24:27All right, one last thing to know, Brian, I'm going to just
- 24:30jump through this. Langston Patterson, he's their
- 24:32leading tackler. He got 10 tackles on us last
- 24:34year. Basically, motor guy, all that
- 24:39fun stuff. Langston Patterson, let's get to
- 24:42the keys here. Brian, I'm going to let you
- 24:44lead. I'm going to let Tally get his
- 24:45breath here. But Brian, what's your key to
- 24:48this game? You need to score points on
- 24:51offense. And I mean literally we didn't
- 24:52score any points on offense of the the special team scored.
- 24:57You know, they kick, they kick some field goals.
- 24:59We got a safety, but we didn't score offensive points.
- 25:01So you got to do that first. That's the first thing you got
- 25:03to do if you want to beat Vanderbilt is actually score
- 25:06offensive points. So go out there and do that.
- 25:09Let the let's, as Tally said, let the chips fall where they
- 25:11may. Shelton, what about you?
- 25:13What's the key for the Hokies this week?
- 25:15Yeah, I would say contain Pavia, keep him in the pocket I
- 25:21mentioned you know his his pocket numbers.
- 25:24First of all, you want to you want to pressure him obviously,
- 25:27but he had 276 scramble yards last year for Vanderbilt, 8
- 25:32rushing touchdowns, of course, one that came against Virginia
- 25:34Tech. So you got to limit him there
- 25:37and just try to get as much pressure on him as you can
- 25:39because if you let him sit in the pocket all day, he is going
- 25:41to make you. Pay for it.
- 25:43All right? I'm going to go to me next
- 25:45because Tally lets you close it out for me.
- 25:47I'm going to pull up the wife's little comment here.
- 25:49Make him pay, make Pavia pay. Be a goon.
- 25:53Be the assholes. You know what hit him?
- 25:58Swimming, if you get a 15, make him pay.
- 26:00He's got moxie, he's got will. But it's like anybody that's
- 26:04ever been punched, you get keep getting punched and keep getting
- 26:07hurt. A lot of times you lose that
- 26:09energy to keep going forward. You see it in boxing matches,
- 26:13fights, UFC fights all the time. Somebody keeps sticking you and
- 26:16keep hurting you. It's like I I got to do
- 26:18something different here. Make him pay.
- 26:20Whether it's in the pocket or when he scrambles, make him pay.
- 26:25Good things will happen. Tally.
- 26:29I'm going to keep saying it, offense has to take the layups,
- 26:33man, and you got to make them. You know, if it's a 5 yard play
- 26:36there, I'm not putting it all on the quarterback, all on the
- 26:39receivers, all in the line. It's as a whole.
- 26:42If it's a 5 yard pass, let's, let's, let's get the five yard
- 26:45pass. You know, if there's a 10 yard
- 26:51scramble, take the 10 yard scramble.
- 26:54Kind of like what you said, Curtis, and what Dwight's saying
- 26:57in the in the chat. I mean, you got to go out and
- 27:00have a little bit of asshole to you, man.
- 27:03You got to go out and you got to feel again.
- 27:05I hate that. I don't want nobody to think
- 27:07that I'm putting this all on our quarterback, but I got a lot of
- 27:12faith in Karen drones, right? And just for him, you know, he's
- 27:19AI. Don't think that we are.
- 27:21I don't think that we have anything else in the well that
- 27:25is as good as him right now. Maybe coming up, maybe some of
- 27:29the youngsters, I don't know. But if they were, if they were,
- 27:34if they could be on the field for us to win, they'd be on
- 27:36that. So I need him to I need him to
- 27:38go out and feel disrespected. Like I said, they're coming to
- 27:40your house that that you're going to hear a lot about Diego
- 27:44Pavia, another six and six quarterback.
- 27:47You know what I'm saying, that that ain't one shit that
- 27:50everybody's going to talk about how great he is.
- 27:53All Karen got to go out and do is take the layups and put some
- 27:57down points on the board. Go some points.
- 28:00Score some points. All right, let's get our
- 28:02predictions in here. Shelton, I'm going to start
- 28:05with. You yes.
- 28:09So my prediction I, I, I, my brain says that pive is going to
- 28:14light Vt up, which I think is probably true.
- 28:16However, I do think Vt is going to find a way to get a win.
- 28:20I think it will be the first one score victory for the Hokies in
- 28:24three years. I'll say I'll say 27 to 21 US
- 28:31high score, but I do think the Hokies will will find a way to
- 28:34get a win and get that power for non conference losing streak off
- 28:38their backs for the first time in eight years.
- 28:41Please please. It was in the chat somebody had
- 28:43It's eight years to the day, West Virginia at FedEx Field
- 28:47back in 2017, Brian. Brian's got a y'all if y'all
- 28:52didn't pay attention last week, Brian's got.
- 28:54Brian's got a vendetta right now.
- 28:57Yeah man, I I'm going to commit to the bit at this point.
- 29:00I got to see us take care of AP4 opponent before I'm going to
- 29:04move off of this. I've got us losing A1 score game
- 29:07to Vandy 3027. Jesus Christ.
- 29:12Well, he said he's going to do it, he said.
- 29:14Until they proved him wrong. He's got to.
- 29:16I don't blame him. You.
- 29:18Got to show me you can take care of business against a Power 4
- 29:21out of conference at home, man. And I haven't seen it.
- 29:23So I need to see it. And until I do, that's what I'm
- 29:26going to have there. You go tally.
- 29:28What about you? I want to go with Brian, but I
- 29:31can't do it, man. I just can't.
- 29:33I can't say it. You know what I'm saying?
- 29:35Even if I thank it and believe it, I can't say that.
- 29:38So I got to say I'm leaning more towards the shelf, but I think
- 29:42it's going to be more like a 10 point win.
- 29:45I'd be too nervous to say we win in A1 score game.
- 29:48So I'm going to say I'm going to say a 10.10 point victory.
- 29:52I don't know how how deep we go into that, that scoring scoring
- 29:57thing. And I just want to hit on what
- 30:00Andre Andre says here. Just curious, is Drones really
- 30:04better or does NIL have something to do with him
- 30:06starting? Sometimes the NIL does have to
- 30:08do what people starting. Our coach is on the hot seat.
- 30:14That seat is hot. It fucking feeling like his ass
- 30:18is feeling like pins and needles are sticking it right now.
- 30:22If somebody else is better, they're going in the game.
- 30:25If he goes out and he ain't good enough, somebody else is going
- 30:28in that game. That's just my feeling.
- 30:30If he doesn't have a good practice, like if you don't,
- 30:33somebody else would already be in.
- 30:35So I think drones is the best. That's just my of of what we
- 30:38have. So that's just my assessment.
- 30:41I could be wrong. But back to what you asked
- 30:44Curtis. We going to win by 10 points.
- 30:46Win by 10 points. I I am going to go 3123.
- 30:54Technically that is A1 score game, one score game, but I
- 31:01think it's one of those things where like the the faith I have
- 31:06in the defense right now is I I put up 23 and the way I'm seeing
- 31:11this in my head, they're getting to 23 would like a score with
- 31:14one minute left to go. Like like they had to drive the
- 31:18whole field in the fourth quarter and they finally punched
- 31:20it in and you know, they have to do it on side.
- 31:23We recover game over, we kneel on it.
- 31:25So by 8, I think we all hope it's this score though, so we
- 31:30can all be. I know Brian's going to come
- 31:32over to the house Saturday night.
- 31:33We're going to have some drinks, eat some food, watch a game.
- 31:37So, yeah, but throw your predictions because again, I'm
- 31:43going to say this and I and I and I said I was going to say at
- 31:45the beginning of the program, but I decided, hold on.
- 31:48I think this is the biggest game for Brent Pryor because if you
- 31:53lose this one, there's going to be a lot of people.
- 31:56I'm not saying they're not going to tune in, but like you, you
- 31:59can't be the guy you started O 1-2.
- 32:02You lost a home game. Like you've got to win this game
- 32:06because as you look at the schedule, you win this game and
- 32:09you start touting out everything, right?
- 32:13You could win quite a few in a row going into October, but if
- 32:17you don't win this one, there we go.
- 32:20It's going it's going to get ugly.
- 32:21They're. Going to get ahead potentially,
- 32:26I don't know, fast, maybe like come November fast.
- 32:28But was you? On was you on X after this last
- 32:32game? You get, you know it's going to.
- 32:35Get ugly off, Yeah, Whether the whether the the win loss record
- 32:39gets ugly or not, it's going to get ugly behind the scenes.
- 32:42That's what I'm saying. Well, the whole thing is and,
- 32:45and, and I made this point to a guy at work today.
- 32:47Y'all ready for it? Brent Pride has two years left
- 32:49on his contract. Two years because he had a six
- 32:54year contract. First of all, this guy get fired
- 32:58because we ain't going to be allowed.
- 32:59Brian, you said at the beginning back a couple weeks ago if we
- 33:03ain't fired by mid-october, you are not getting a new football
- 33:06coach next year. The second thing is going to be
- 33:09the buy. If you fire him this year, this
- 33:12year and you got to pay 26 and 27 and then you got to pay, you
- 33:16better have $30 million. Whit's already screaming to the
- 33:19board, I need more money. If you fire Pry after this year,
- 33:23better come up with $30 million because that's going to be his
- 33:25buyout, plus to pay a whole new coaching staff at the rack rate
- 33:29what we're doing now so everybody can scream and bitch
- 33:32and we need to fire him. And I might agree with you, but
- 33:35I look logically at things. We ain't got $30 million just to
- 33:38piss down and say you fired, We're going to get a new coach.
- 33:44We're bringing Chucky in. That's what I've heard.
- 33:48Then, then then it. Better be about 220 million
- 33:50because he ain't going to go for the $5,000,000 a year.
- 33:53Right they're. Going to be about 8 1/2 to 9.
- 33:58There we go. That's my thing.
- 33:59Do the math and when the math don't math y'all go.
- 34:02Have to deal with Brent Frye next year.
- 34:03We can be out on him at this year and we can still talk about
- 34:06these guys and beating. Happy for our players but he
- 34:09going to be there next. Year.
- 34:10Look, if it gets bad, bad. Then again, the chips will fall,
- 34:13we'll get fired in mid-october and everything will happen.
- 34:16But. But it ain't gonna get bad bad
- 34:18till November. Well, now if you, if, if you, if
- 34:22you are, oh, this bad, bad. If you only have two wins and
- 34:26it's the middle of October, that's when it gets bad, bad.
- 34:29But the whole thing is you got to get rid of wit first.
- 34:32That's what I'm saying. That's when you fire wit like
- 34:34you've If you know that bad in mid-october, you're firing wit
- 34:37so you can hire a new coach. Urban Meyer ain't coming here.
- 34:40Android ain't even putting that up there.
- 34:42What he said Urban Meyer. He said.
- 34:45Urban Meyer, you going to get on his ass?
- 34:46We got a better chance of getting Michael Meyer than Urban
- 34:49Meyer. That's what I say all.
- 34:53Right, as usual, it's always fun.
- 34:56We also had our big screeners coming up.
- 34:59If somebody rode with Tally last week, you ought to made yourself
- 35:04some money. Alone, dog.
- 35:07Brian, Brian, you damn it, we will run it up here.
- 35:10Current records will be showed every week.
- 35:12Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
- 35:13Because I'm. It wasn't a good week for me.
- 35:15It wasn't a good week for. Me wasn't a good week.
- 35:16Me and Shelton, we're just average players here.
- 35:19We're just doing things. And you know, this is a weird
- 35:22slate week because there's one big, big game out there, but
- 35:26there's a lot of other intriguing games, like
- 35:29intriguing, some rivalry games, but just intriguing games.
- 35:34I went with the Big 1, though. It will be right over there on
- 35:38Saturday night as the Hokies take the big screen behind me as
- 35:43Michigan and Underwood, who did not look like a freshman on
- 35:46Saturday, go in to Bootersuna Country playing Oklahoma.
- 35:52Oklahoma laying 5 1/2. I'm going to go Oklahoma here.
- 36:00More for the home field advantage than anything and for
- 36:06the fact that Brent Venables is on the hot seat.
- 36:09We we talked about Brent Pry on the hot seat.
- 36:11Oklahoma got the money to fire their coach, buy them out and go
- 36:13higher than you coach. I think Oklahoma wins this one
- 36:17good game. I think it's going to be a good
- 36:18game, like a touchdown win for them, which covers the 5 1/2
- 36:23Shelton. Yeah, I'm going to go oh, you.
- 36:26I think they're I think they're better than people think.
- 36:29And I also think it's kind of similar to a similar situation
- 36:33to Vt where you got a coach under a lot of pressure to win.
- 36:35So I think they'll get kind of a, you know, sort of a a much
- 36:39needed win relative to you to kind of kind of where they're at
- 36:42as a program against, against Michigan at home.
- 36:46Tally. We going Michigan, baby.
- 36:49We going Michigan because they keep coming in Virginia taking
- 36:52players. And that player was.
- 36:55That player was right above here on the Friday night and the
- 37:01truth is he lost to the high school local and they ain't good
- 37:06at football. So and I know Luisa is a smaller
- 37:10school Brian, but still if you got the number 4 running back in
- 37:13the whatever he is in the country and you can't beat
- 37:15Godwin. Well, you still got to block.
- 37:20It's true like. At the end of the day, like if,
- 37:25if you're not blocking that, that running backs only going to
- 37:27be able to do so much. Hey, we didn't block this.
- 37:31We didn't block for certain running backs in the 2000 and
- 37:33they still got like 1000 yards so.
- 37:34Yeah, but it's relative, man. Like the the gaps in high
- 37:37school, they swing real big. It's not like a bad offensive
- 37:42line in college is only marginally worse than an average
- 37:46offensive line. So it can get a little crazy
- 37:50there. But yeah, I've got Michigan
- 37:52here. I like what they look like so
- 37:55far. I I saw the the Brent Venables
- 38:01thing getting passed around. I came back through.
- 38:04I was like, all right, hang on, hang on.
- 38:06Oh my. God.
- 38:09Those players are just lucky that they didn't catch odds with
- 38:12each other while they while that was said, because ain't no way
- 38:15they would have made it at that press conference without Don
- 38:19anyway. That's what I got.
- 38:20I got Michigan here. He's got Michigan.
- 38:23Let's go next. What game?
- 38:26Oh UVANC, tally your game. Yeah, 2 opponents.
- 38:32We got it. We got to see this year.
- 38:35Not saying I like either one, but I got UVA winning this one.
- 38:41UVA takes you from that. OK, OK.
- 38:46I've got State winning this one. I I think these two teams aren't
- 38:49that much different on paper and I don't think that NC State's
- 38:54going to run away with this one. I think it is going to be about
- 38:56A1 score game, but I think they're at least going to cover
- 38:58that 2 1/2 at home. I think State covers the 2 1/2.
- 39:03State unfortunately had to play ECU, who was in their Super Bowl
- 39:07last weekend or last Thursday night.
- 39:10We know how that goes with the with the G5 opponents.
- 39:14And clearly Coastal is one of those places that it's set up to
- 39:19get rated every of the year. Like seriously, because it's
- 39:26going to be kids who can't get into certain schools or lower
- 39:29two stars who are athletic. They're going to go to Coastal.
- 39:33They're going to do something freaky and it's going to be
- 39:35like, I know he ain't playing because he hurt Braden Bennett
- 39:37or that D line kid or those other kids.
- 39:40I think that's what I'm going to say.
- 39:42Coastal is next year, Coastal will be good.
- 39:44Then the year after that, they'll lose everybody and suck
- 39:46ass again. NC State by 10.
- 39:52Yeah, I'll, I'll take, I will take NC State, I think.
- 39:55I think you guys do for a stinker and I like them at home.
- 39:59UVA is due for a stinker. They've done a lot of that in
- 40:01the last like, half decades. Yeah, Shelton, you are up next.
- 40:06Yes, I went with the appropriately named game El
- 40:10Asico between Iowa and Iowa State.
- 40:14The the nickname derived it derived from the horrid lack of
- 40:18offense that always happens in this game.
- 40:20But we should do see some cool defensive and special teams
- 40:23plays. So in this game, Iowa State -3
- 40:261/2 I will take the Cyclones. Bam Talley.
- 40:32I'm going to Iowa State. I've only watched them play.
- 40:34I haven't watched Iowa play. And not saying they were great,
- 40:38but I like what I seen out of them, so I'm going to take Iowa
- 40:40State. Brian Siegler.
- 40:44I'm going to Iowa here. There's not really any reason
- 40:47here. I'm just vibes.
- 40:49I, I, I think I was going to be come to play with this one and
- 40:53I'm not sure exactly what we can expect there.
- 40:55So I'll take the I'll take the Hawkeyes here.
- 40:59He will take the Hawkeyes. I am going to take the Cyclones
- 41:04by 3 1/2. I think they're set up to make
- 41:07another good run this year. The game overseas against Kansas
- 41:10State, by the way, over under. Anybody want to guess what it is
- 41:14for this one? 34 1/2 I was.
- 41:17Going to say 2028. It's over 40 this year, y'all,
- 41:22It's 41 1/2. So clearly Brian and Tally are
- 41:25going to call their bookie and say they ain't scoring 40
- 41:28points. You seen these two teams play.
- 41:30Hammer the under. Hammer the under.
- 41:34So there, that is last but not least.
- 41:36Brian, where are you going? We're going to Louisville, man.
- 41:40We're we got the good old Jamie Dukes heading down there to
- 41:45Louisville, taking on the Cardinals.
- 41:47Cardinals 13 1/2 favorite at home there at that's a little
- 41:52too rich for my blood. JMU is definitely, I think going
- 41:55to be the best team in the Sunbelt this year.
- 41:58I think this may be one of the more talented teams they've had
- 42:01in the last few years. I think they're going to make
- 42:04this a close one. I think it's going to be about a
- 42:0510 point loss for the Dukes, but I'll I'll take JMU here.
- 42:10I'm going to go oppo of you and not so fast.
- 42:13I if anything, Jeff Braun can score points and anytime he
- 42:17plays like AG5 school, it feels like he can just put up points.
- 42:21I'm I'm, I think, I think it's, it's one of those where it's,
- 42:25it's like it's 10 as we go into the fourth quarter and then they
- 42:29hit The Jets and win by 17. OK, I was.
- 42:31Going to say if this was 14 in the hook would you have bit?
- 42:3514 in the hook would have been tough.
- 42:37I'll ask you to pick another game.
- 42:39Game. I.
- 42:41Can't do this, Sheldon. Who you got?
- 42:44Yeah, I definitely think Lowell's going to win.
- 42:46I'd say probably by ten. I thought it was kind of an
- 42:48abnormally large spread. But again, trust Vegas.
- 42:52Vegas always knows. I just, I just think Jimmy will
- 42:55do just quite enough to cover. I'm going Louisville and Brian
- 43:01said they're going to win by 10. Why not win by four more 14?
- 43:05That's all I. Think oh man.
- 43:08So there are all of our picks for big screeners a lot of other
- 43:12good games to keep an eye on on Saturday.
- 43:16I know we're not playing on this year.
- 43:17Illinois Duke could be tricky. Illinois is like ranked in the
- 43:21top ten probably for the first time in maybe 15-16 years.
- 43:27When what Juice. Remember Juice Wells?
- 43:30Was that his name? Juice Wells took him to the Rose
- 43:33Bowl years ago. Boston College.
- 43:38Juice Williams. Juice Williams, How did I say
- 43:40wells? I got it on there.
- 43:42Jews. Wells was the wide receiver.
- 43:44It was at South Carolina, then went to Old Hiss last year.
- 43:47He is all over it, all over it, all my fruit.
