Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily Abadi here, you are listening to another
- 0:20Speaker 1: installment of Five Minute Friday from Hurdle. If you're new
- 0:25Speaker 1: to the show, welcome, I'm so happy to have you
- 0:27Speaker 1: on Five Minute Friday. I come at you talking about
- 0:31Speaker 1: a story from my week, something that I am going through,
- 0:34Speaker 1: thinking about dealing with. Then I offer you a thought
- 0:37Speaker 1: prompt to take you into the weekend and finish things
- 0:40Speaker 1: off with my highlights of the week. Those are my
- 0:42Speaker 1: content picks, whether they be books, movies, articles, events, things
- 0:47Speaker 1: that I think are really cool that I want to
- 0:49Speaker 1: bring to your attention, and of course a listener question.
- 0:53Speaker 2: This week, I want to confess something to all of you.
- 0:57Speaker 1: For the last I would say, in all of June,
- 1:00Speaker 1: I have journaled maybe six or seven times for context,
- 1:10Speaker 1: this episode's coming out on June twenty fifth, And this
- 1:13Speaker 1: is something that is really outside the box for me
- 1:17Speaker 1: because over the last you know, fourteen sixteen months, the
- 1:20Speaker 1: quarantine period, I was really really good.
- 1:25Speaker 2: At making time for that right.
- 1:28Speaker 1: I woke up every single morning and I would leave
- 1:31Speaker 1: my bedroom, I would use the bathroom, I would come
- 1:33Speaker 1: back into the bedroom, I would make my bed. I
- 1:36Speaker 1: would segue to an espresso machine. To make my favorite pod,
- 1:40Speaker 1: which is the erandio, and then I would bring the
- 1:43Speaker 1: arandio pod back into the bedroom and journal and my
- 1:47Speaker 1: strategy was that every day I would write just one
- 1:52Speaker 1: page of my thoughts and what I'm going through and
- 1:55Speaker 1: what's happening in my life, and then at the end
- 1:57Speaker 1: of every journal injury, I would write something that I'm
- 1:59Speaker 1: great before And it's been a staple of my morning
- 2:02Speaker 1: routine for a really long time, something that just feels
- 2:05Speaker 1: very true to who I am and helps me kind
- 2:07Speaker 1: of keep things in perspective.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I guess for me, especially that.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Highlight at the end of the journal entry, it keeps
- 2:15Speaker 1: me grounded. I started doing that a while back because
- 2:19Speaker 1: I wanted to make sure that I was making an
- 2:22Speaker 1: effort to always come back to gratitude and to look
- 2:25Speaker 1: on the bright side. And on the days where I
- 2:27Speaker 1: was having trouble articulating what that highlight from the past
- 2:30Speaker 1: twenty four hours could be, I kind of sat with
- 2:34Speaker 1: that feeling and asked myself, like, what are you doing
- 2:36Speaker 1: that you're so caught up in things, you're not paying
- 2:38Speaker 1: attention to the good in your life, that you're having
- 2:42Speaker 1: a hard time articulating something One thing that was positive,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and so over the last fourteen sixteen months, that strategy
- 2:51Speaker 1: has been really helpful for me. But again, I noticed
- 2:54Speaker 1: over this month that I hadn't been making this a priority.
- 2:59Speaker 2: And this morning, when.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I sat down to journal for you know, the seventh
- 3:05Speaker 1: time this month, I asked myself, why why have I
- 3:10Speaker 1: been stepping away from my journal? And by the way,
- 3:13Speaker 1: I obviously have to plug here my baron Fig journal.
- 3:16Speaker 1: They are a sponsor on Hurdle. I have gone through
- 3:19Speaker 1: so many journals in my days and these lay flat.
- 3:23Speaker 1: They're like fabric covered and bound. They are just absolutely beautiful.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I can't recommend them enough. Of course, I'll plug the
- 3:30Speaker 1: discount code here as well, because I know that you
- 3:33Speaker 1: all would love one. Baron FIG's got an offer for
- 3:35Speaker 1: you guys to use Hurdle twenty at check out to
- 3:38Speaker 1: get twenty percent off of any order.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Trust me, grab a notebook. You won't regret it.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Anyway, I was sitting down with my baron Fig notebook,
- 3:45Speaker 1: I was asking myself, what's the deal? Why am I
- 3:47Speaker 1: like this? And I think I was scared to face
- 3:57Speaker 1: that a lot of days my gratitude was kind of
- 4:01Speaker 1: the same. I feel so happy in my new home
- 4:04Speaker 1: and this apartment and walking around my neighborhood, and I
- 4:08Speaker 1: feel so sure of this decision and where I'm at,
- 4:11Speaker 1: But I kept writing that down, and I was losing
- 4:17Speaker 1: my focus in being more present and paying attention to
- 4:21Speaker 1: the good things in my day to day although they
- 4:23Speaker 1: were there right, Like, I have so much good stuff
- 4:27Speaker 1: going on amidst of course, like all of us, like
- 4:30Speaker 1: moments that may not be absolutely stellar. But in trying
- 4:35Speaker 1: to maybe protect myself, I was really just shutting down.
- 4:40Speaker 1: I was really just almost pretending like I didn't need
- 4:45Speaker 1: to do inventory of this, like I didn't need to
- 4:47Speaker 1: confront where I was emotionally. And that's not the way,
- 4:51Speaker 1: right If we want to move forward, if we want
- 4:54Speaker 1: to be our best selves, then we need to be
- 4:57Speaker 1: honest with ourselves, and me not being honest with myself
- 5:01Speaker 1: isn't gonna get me where I want to go. So
- 5:06Speaker 1: I am recommitting to journaling. I'd actually love to do
- 5:09Speaker 1: some sort of a journaling challenge maybe, So if you
- 5:11Speaker 1: are listening to this and that is something that you
- 5:14Speaker 1: would be interested in, should me a DM at Emily
- 5:17Speaker 1: Abadie if I get enough DMS from this episode from
- 5:21Speaker 1: this admission, to all of you. Then maybe I'll come
- 5:24Speaker 1: up with something fun for us to do and throw
- 5:26Speaker 1: some details about that and next week's Five Minute Friday
- 5:29Speaker 1: or perhaps next week's weekly Hurdle newsletter. My prompt for
- 5:34Speaker 1: you this week, I'm going to ask you the question
- 5:37Speaker 1: I asked myself or want to be asking myself every
- 5:40Speaker 1: single day. What is one good thing that happened to
- 5:44Speaker 1: you in the last twenty four hours? Again, what is
- 5:47Speaker 1: one good thing that happened to you over the past
- 5:50Speaker 1: twenty four hours. Highlights of the week. Links to all
- 5:55Speaker 1: this goodness can be found in the show notes. First
- 5:57Speaker 1: up event to check out Pride is This is Saturday.
- 6:00Speaker 1: It is Pride Month June. I actually just got off
- 6:03Speaker 1: of a recording with an expert talking about coming out
- 6:07Speaker 1: and a lot of the questions that may surround that
- 6:10Speaker 1: super difficult hurdle moment. It's a topic I also talked
- 6:13Speaker 1: about with Caleb Marshall, the Fitness Marshall earlier this month.
- 6:17Speaker 2: I will link to his episode in the show notes.
- 6:20Speaker 1: But whether you are here in the New York area
- 6:23Speaker 1: or wherever you may be listening to this, there are
- 6:25Speaker 1: definitely events going on in your area, so check it out.
- 6:29Speaker 1: And celebrate love being love being love for everyone. Also
- 6:35Speaker 1: listen the Truth and Consequences of dating as a trans
- 6:38Speaker 1: woman with Jen Richard's on the Laverne Cox Show Laverne
- 6:42Speaker 1: and Jen. They address the struggles of dating as a
- 6:44Speaker 1: trans woman in this powerful, candid conversation, and they dive
- 6:48Speaker 1: right into topics like why some men are attracted to
- 6:51Speaker 1: trans women, why men have a hard time being honest
- 6:54Speaker 1: about that attraction at times, and what Jen thinks is
- 6:57Speaker 1: the biggest kept secret about trans women. Watch the final
- 7:02Speaker 1: days of the Olympic Track and Field trials. I have
- 7:04Speaker 1: been absolutely glued to my TV and this man. This
- 7:08Speaker 1: coverage has been excellent. It is so emotional watching all
- 7:12Speaker 1: of these stellar athletes make their dreams come true. And
- 7:16Speaker 1: I will definitely definitely be watching throughout the last few
- 7:20Speaker 1: days here to see who else punches their ticket to Tokyo.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Read athlete CC Telfer says sports allow trans youth to
- 7:28Speaker 1: be seen as people.
- 7:29Speaker 2: First.
- 7:29Speaker 1: On Women's Health, cc Telfer is a trans woman and
- 7:33Speaker 1: collegiate national champion. In this article so well written over
- 7:37Speaker 1: on Woman's Health, she gets really vulnerable and describing her
- 7:39Speaker 1: childhood the struggles of embracing her identity and the impact
- 7:43Speaker 1: sports has had on.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Her life thus far.
- 7:47Speaker 1: And last, but not least, I want to give some
- 7:49Speaker 1: love to my girl, Allison Felix. She's heading back to
- 7:52Speaker 1: the Olympics and this is her first go about at
- 7:55Speaker 1: the Games as a mom.
- 7:57Speaker 2: She is so inspiring.
- 7:58Speaker 1: So Dope will also a link to her episode of
- 8:02Speaker 1: Hurdle in the show notes if you haven't checked it out,
- 8:04Speaker 1: it's a must listen. But Alison Felix and Athleta partnered
- 8:08Speaker 1: to create another collection, and this collection includes a super cute,
- 8:13Speaker 1: really clutch pair of five inch in seam shorts. I
- 8:17Speaker 1: get a lot of questions on shorts all of the
- 8:20Speaker 1: time my go tos. I linked to some of them
- 8:22Speaker 1: in last week's Weekly Hurdle, but this is a new
- 8:25Speaker 1: addition to the mix. I tried them yesterday. I love them,
- 8:29Speaker 1: and I'll link to these in the show notes. They
- 8:31Speaker 1: are called the Athleta Legend shorty and now a listener question.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Hi Emily, my name is Alec and I am in
- 8:41Speaker 3: New York City. I really enjoyed the podcast episode earlier
- 8:44Speaker 3: this week with your dad, and so my question for
- 8:47Speaker 3: you is what is the best piece of advice that
- 8:50Speaker 3: your dad has ever given you. And random side question.
- 8:54Speaker 3: He mentioned that you did a public speaking gig as
- 8:56Speaker 3: a kid in multiple languages, so I'm dying to know
- 9:00Speaker 3: what languages do you speak?
- 9:02Speaker 2: Thank you, Alec, thank you so much for this question.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Oh man, the best piece of advice my dad has
- 9:10Speaker 1: ever given me. That's a tough one. As you may
- 9:12Speaker 1: have listened to earlier. This week, I had Dad on
- 9:14Speaker 1: the show. The episode came out on Monday, and it
- 9:17Speaker 1: was full of goodies. I would say the through line
- 9:21Speaker 1: when it comes to my dad is two things.
- 9:25Speaker 2: One, trust your gut.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Oftentimes, you know, we may look to others for a
- 9:30Speaker 1: second opinion, but more often than not, we have the
- 9:34Speaker 1: answers and all that we need withinside us. And the
- 9:38Speaker 1: second thing would be what our family motto is, what
- 9:42Speaker 1: I go back to every single day, is the saying
- 9:46Speaker 1: do good. My grandpa used to say it to us
- 9:49Speaker 1: every single time that we would leave the house when
- 9:52Speaker 1: we came to visit, and I just continuously asked myself
- 9:55Speaker 1: that I asked myself.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Am I doing good? Am I being kind?
- 9:59Speaker 1: Am I doing what I can to make a difference?
- 10:03Speaker 2: To help others?
- 10:03Speaker 1: And to show up as authentically and true to me
- 10:07Speaker 1: as I can be in terms of what languages I
- 10:09Speaker 1: can speak, really just English, to be honest with you,
- 10:12Speaker 1: When I was little, I learned a few phrases in Spanish,
- 10:15Speaker 1: that is what he was referring to. I also took
- 10:18Speaker 1: a semester of Hebrew in college, and I know a
- 10:21Speaker 1: little bit of Italian. But if we're being honest, my
- 10:25Speaker 1: one and only true language is English. That's it for
- 10:30Speaker 1: this week, and make sure you're following along with Hurdle
- 10:32Speaker 1: Over at Hurdle podcast. I'm over at Emily a Body,
- 10:36Speaker 1: another hurdle conquered.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Catch you guys next time.
