- 1:23Parts one and two from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar. This
- 1:32is Joe mcnabe, Johnny Try Eastern Indemnity. Oh hi, Joe, what's
- 1:34up? Start a Cape Town, start a Cape down, constellation, celebrity,
- 1:38or ship wrong three times? The start of Cape Town is a diamond
- 1:42about the size of a jumbo olive. Sounds like it to make a nice
- 1:45ornament for a martini, except i'me strictly a lemon peel man. Oh,
- 1:48this is serious, Johnny. I'd like you to take a look at it
- 1:49now. What's so interesting about it? Except it's probably worth one hundred thousand
- 1:53dollars make it one hundred and fifty. That's what we've ensured it for.
- 1:56Oh, got quite a history to it. Three men we know of it
- 2:00and killed over in the last fifty years. This stone, I like to
- 2:01see. Where is it? Name of the stone? Johnny Stark? Hey,
- 2:06wait a minute, in Cape Town, South Africa. That's right.
- 2:08Interested, I'll be right over tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey in
- 2:20the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account, America's Fabulous
- 2:23freelance insurance investigator. Oh it's truly Johnny Dollar expense account submitted by special Investigator
- 2:44Johnny Dollar to try Eastern Indemnity Associates Home office following as an accounting of expenses
- 2:49incurred during my investigation of the Star of Cape Town matter expense account IDEM one
- 2:58a dollar fifty camp fare for my apartment to the office of Triastern Indemnity Associates.
- 3:01Joe mcnah was waiting for me, Is it don Johnny? Thanks?
- 3:07So, what about the Star of Cape Town? Sounds interesting? You're interested?
- 3:10We're worried. What about ever? Hear of Andrew Lanning Forbes? The
- 3:15third wores Forbes seems to me have seen his picture in the papers a couple
- 3:17of times, international playboy type, isn't he? That's the one he owns
- 3:22The Star of Cape Town now inherited the stone after the recent death of his
- 3:24aunt. Johnny, like I told you, we've got that diamond showed for
- 3:28one hundred and fifty thousand bucks. But Forbes treats it like it was a
- 3:30ten cent store hunk of costume jewelry. What do you mean? He cuts
- 3:35it from place to place wherever he goes, Paris, Rome, the Riviera,
- 3:38you name it. He's been there, and so is the Star of
- 3:40Cape Town. You mean, oh, he keeps it in the hotels,
- 3:44safe stuff like that. But that isn't good enough. We want him to
- 3:46put it in permanent custody somewhere. Yeah, I see your points, but
- 3:50he won'ts seem to listen to reason, and right now it's a particularly bad
- 3:53period for us. How come Forbes seems to be in one of his party
- 3:57giving moods. He has him every once in a while, about three weeks
- 4:00at a time, a big party every night wherever he happens to be.
- 4:02Then he quiets down for a month or two. Yeah, I'm probably resting
- 4:04up. But how come he's in Cape Town now? Who knows? Who
- 4:09knows why he goes anywhere he does? Oh? Brother, sounds like a
- 4:12real character. Yeah, but what we want you to do is to talk
- 4:14him out of being a character long enough to put that diamond in a safe
- 4:16place and to keep an eye on it until he does. We got a
- 4:19plane reservation for you to night at midnight tonight, not just a minute.
- 4:24Look, if it's the money you're worried about, don't be This means a
- 4:26lot to us. We're willing to pay accordingly. Sure you may not believe
- 4:29this, but I wasn't thinking about the money. Then. What those three
- 4:31men who got killed over that diamond? You told me about them over the
- 4:34phone. Oh, that look, the diamond's fifty years old. Those three
- 4:39killings were twenty thirty years ago. Just the same three is always a crowd,
- 4:43and I wouldn't like to see it increase by one expense. Account at
- 4:47him two three sixty campfair to my apartment to pack an end of the airport
- 4:51where Joe mcnah have met me and told me three tired jokes in two minutes
- 4:55in a very subtle attempt to keep my mind off the three dead men,
- 4:58as he gently steered me to the plane. I had him three plane fair
- 5:01to Cape Town, South Africa. The plane came in over Cape Town in
- 5:12the early afternoon, off to one side, toward the famous Devil's Peak,
- 5:15and down below the bay glittered like yeah. It looked like everything was trying
- 5:18to remind me of that diamond. As if I could forget a stone worthy
- 5:23of one hundred and fifty thousand and the lives of three people, I had
- 5:27them five care fair to the residents of Andrew Lanning Forbes. A third he'd
- 5:30rented a mansion on the side of a hill. I was ushered onto a
- 5:33terrace overlooking the city in the bay. Forest was waiting for me with a
- 5:36drink in his hand. He was a thin faced, elegant, tired looking
- 5:41character whose deep tan didn't hide the lines on his face. He could have
- 5:45been anywhere from thirty five to fifty. Hey, how have you a drink?
- 5:47Dollar? Well, a little early in the afternoon, isn't oh?
- 5:53Is it? It might coot you off? Okay, Hey, it's quite
- 5:59a place you have here. Here. It's adequate, you seem amused.
- 6:03Color must be fifteen sixteen ROMs at least roughly adequate. Seems kind of like
- 6:08an understatement. Quite positively, you are thanks. Look, dollar was very
- 6:15thoughtful of the insurance company to send you all the way down here. But
- 6:17also it was well, it wouldn't unnecessary be the word that depends, mister
- 6:23Forbes. What do you mean the company I represent? It's pretty chittery over
- 6:27that diame of yours, the star of Cape Tom. Would you like to
- 6:30see it? Well, yes, but I think we are here it is
- 6:33you're carrying around in your pocket? Why not? I have no holes in
- 6:36my buckets? Oh now, look Forbes. But no, no, no,
- 6:40I'm really not as bad as that dollar. I was expecting you,
- 6:43so I thought i'd play a little joke on you. Mister Forbes, that
- 6:46kind of humor shortness my life? Well, I suppose it was a bit
- 6:49cruel. Well there it is. What do you think of it? Like
- 6:56nav said, it was the size of a jumbo waller, looks more like
- 7:00a golf ball to me. Quite vulgar, isn't it. Oh, what
- 7:03a cutting job they did on it? Beautiful. There must be a thousand
- 7:09fests, yeah, all of them glittering, all of them coal, all
- 7:12of them surfers, Rather like life, don't you think. Look, mister
- 7:15Forbes, if you don't mind, let's skip the philosophy for a minute and
- 7:18talk about the diamond. Of course, you're still concerned about his safety.
- 7:24Well perhaps this will reassure you. Will you come with me? Sure this
- 7:28way? I have a very efficient wall safe in my bedroom in here,
- 7:32so you see I do take precautions. Here we are. Yeah, Are
- 7:50you reassured? Now? No, your bedroom opens off the terrace. It'll
- 7:55be too easy for somebody to get it. That's safe, very well,
- 7:58mister Dalla. After I shall place the diamond in a bank. That's the
- 8:01best news I've had all day. Yes, a nice party would be my
- 8:05last for a while. Party for Agatha, Oh, Zagatha. Oh,
- 8:09she's my elder sister. She's on a world tour, arriving here in Cape
- 8:13Town later this afternoon. I'm going to surprise her. Hey, wait a
- 8:15minute, you came all the way here to Cape Town to throw a surprise
- 8:18party for your sister. Well, it wasn't doing anything else at the moment.
- 8:20Why not? Well, I could think of a couple of reasons,
- 8:24but they probably wouldn't sound convincing to you. Probably not, although they probably
- 8:28would sound convincing the Agatha. Oh, yeah, she and I are quite
- 8:33different. Half the time she worries about me, the other the halftime she
- 8:35disapproves of me. She consist it quite beat the dignity of the Forbes name
- 8:41for me to go popping around from place to place like this. I see,
- 8:43yeh. She's quite devoted to the cause of the Forbes name to make
- 8:48sure it keeps standing for well, whatever it's supposed to sand for. I
- 8:50was never quite sure myself. So you're giving her a surprise party in the
- 8:54night? Was she like the idea? Probably not. That's what makes it
- 8:58fun. Oh, by the way, would you like to come, Well,
- 9:01under the circumstances, I think i'd better. I wonder if I could
- 9:05have a guest list a guest good evids You mean you don't have one,
- 9:09of course not. I just invite people here there wait to see who turns
- 9:13up. Then you don't have any idea who all's coming. Absolutely not.
- 9:18God, that's the only thing that makes these parties worthwhile. Oh great,
- 9:26a character with a coint habit of carrying his diamond in his pocket throwing a
- 9:30party where he didn't know who was coming. This was a situation not calculated
- 9:33to help my peace of mind. Believe me. Forbes had his driver take
- 9:37me back to town. I stopped along the way at police headquarters and talked
- 9:41to Lieutenant Van Tyle, who agreed to furnish a man to help me keep
- 9:43an eye on the party expense of con Adam six cab fair back out to
- 9:46forbes house that evening for the party. I thought I was getting there early,
- 9:52but there were already quite a few people about. A stocky bartender shoved
- 9:56a drink in my hand as I walked in, and I took a look
- 9:58around. Quite a brawl. Then I spotted the girl with honey colored hair
- 10:03and a green dress that matched her eyes. Well, it was as good
- 10:07a place to start as any. Hi. Hi, my name's Johnny.
- 10:11I know. Oh, I'm Sheila. You're a friend of Forbes. My
- 10:16you are new around here, aren't you? What of me? You'll find
- 10:20me at most of Andy's parties. He arranges my transportation. Let's see,
- 10:26do you what's your excuse for being here in this gay mad throng? You
- 10:31know him too? Uh? Matter of fact, no, I just met
- 10:35him this afternoon and he invited me to come. That's far for the course.
- 10:37Ah, you are, oh Forbes. I'm glad you two have gotten
- 10:41acquainted. Enjoying yourself. Sheila delirious? Is she wonderful? Johnny? She's
- 10:46always so gracefully bored? You see, Johnny, I perform quite a useful
- 10:50function around here. I'm always good for laughs. Yeah. Well, is
- 10:56your sister and joining the party? Forbes? I guess I of course not.
- 11:01Haven't you met her yet, Johnny? No? No, oh,
- 11:03she's over by the window, the thin, aristocratic, tired looking at lady.
- 11:07Oh, yeah, yeah, I see what you mean. That's her
- 11:11looking to stay. She thoroughly disapproves of this whole party, and of me,
- 11:15of course, and of me to come along. Johnny, I'd like
- 11:18you to meet Agatha. Oh, you're taking a chance. She'd probably disapproved
- 11:22of me too. Oh no, no, you look like the respectable type.
- 11:24Thanks. I guess she thoroughly approved. I see you have another guest
- 11:28arriving. Would you to excuse me, I'll introduce you to the later Johnny.
- 11:31Yeah, sure, the perfect host when he wants to be. Oh,
- 11:37who's the new arrival? Her name is Helen? Andy met her a
- 11:41day or two ago. Well, i'll say this for her. Yes,
- 11:45isn't she sorry? Don't be I'm used to it. You know something she'd
- 11:50do. I don't get you. No, I'm not so hard to figure
- 11:52out, Johnny. I think you are. You don't like these parties any
- 11:56more than Agatha. Oh no, watch it, Johnny, you start comparing
- 11:58me to her, and she's going to disapprove of you. Okay, but
- 12:01I still don't get it. You don't like the parties or forbes are the
- 12:05friends that you keep bagging along? Yeah, I've got a perfect attendance record.
- 12:11Why Well, I guess there's one obvious reason. But that would sound
- 12:15real corny. Maybe not. So let's just say that after you've been riding
- 12:20the merry ground long enough standing on solid ground doesn't seem normal. Oh well,
- 12:26maybe if you keep riding that merry ground, you'll grab the brass rings
- 12:30someday. Don't better yet. Sheila drifted over to the bar, where she
- 12:35sat quietly drinking the rest of the evening. I somehow felt sorry for her,
- 12:41but I knew she'd bought her own ticket to the merry ground, at
- 12:43least for the first ride. I looked over at Forbes and started sweating.
- 12:46He was showing the diamond off to the party, but before I could get
- 12:52to him, Agatha did. She must have told him and dignified but firm
- 12:54tones to put the ice on ice. He laughed and took it back to
- 12:58his room. So I relaxed. The party dragged on. A managed to
- 13:03look frigidly pained the rest of the evening, but Forbes was obviously enjoying himself
- 13:05with Helen. They danced, then went out on the terrace. Sheila turned
- 13:09her back and concentrated on her drink. Finally, I went over to the
- 13:13bar. Sorry, Johnny, looked like the bartender's gone home, and that's
- 13:18probably a good IDEA good night. She headed carefully for the door and went
- 13:24out. Then I realized I hadn't seen fors for ten or fifteen minutes.
- 13:28I went out on the terrace, abody in sight. I walked to Forbes's
- 13:33bedroom door, the Forbes Forbes no answer. One lamp was lit. Forbes
- 13:46was on the floor. The knife had gone in low under his ribs.
- 13:50He probably hadn't made a sound. Nearby was the case in which he kept
- 13:54the Star of Cape Town. It was open and empty. Johnny Dollar,
- 14:16this is Lieutenant Van Tyle of the Cape Down Police. Mister Dollar. Oh
- 14:18yeah, Lieutenant, I've been trying to get you anything new on the Forbes
- 14:22murder. I'm afraid not. How about the diamond it's still missing? Oh?
- 14:26So far we're betting zero any suspects? Who is it? Not it?
- 14:31Mister Dollar? They what do you mean, lieutenant? How many guests
- 14:35would you say were at Andrew Forbes party last evening? Sixty? Then we
- 14:39have sixty suspects? Oh great? From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location,
- 14:54Cape Town, South Africa to the home office Tri Eastern Indemnity Associates assignment the
- 15:00Star of Cape Town matter expense account continued Adam seven Cavefair for my hotel to
- 15:09police headquarters. So far in this job. I'd been a big, brilliant
- 15:13nothing. I figured the tenetvent tile of the Cape Down Police might be able
- 15:16to supply a few answers, but as it turned out, all he had
- 15:20on his mind was questions. Now, mister Dollar, I suppose you sit
- 15:24down and explain your connection with this affair, Sherloeutenant, I can make it
- 15:30short, if not sweet. Andrew Forbes was an international playboy. I am
- 15:33well aware of that Cape Town has entertained mister Forbes before, oh vice versa.
- 15:39Well, then you probably also know that he recently inherited a very large
- 15:41diamond known as the Star of Cape Town. Yes, the company I represent
- 15:46was carrying the insurance on that stone, one hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
- 15:50They didn't like the way Forbes was flashing it around. They thought he was
- 15:52a bit too careless with it. I was trying to talk him into using
- 15:54a little common sense, And that is why you came here to Cape Town.
- 15:58Yeah, but it looks like I've struck out, struck Forbes as dead
- 16:02and the diamond's gone. You were at the party from some time before Forbeses
- 16:07murder until afterwards, that's right. You stayed in the main room the entire
- 16:11time. Oh yeah, Oh now, look, lieutenant, I'd hardly fly
- 16:15all the way here to pump off a guy. Yes, questions, mister
- 16:19Dollar, just question. Yeah, But what I need right now is answers.
- 16:22As do I these other guests at Forbes party? Did you know any
- 16:26of them? No? Well, I met a girlfriend of his name is
- 16:30Sheila. A couple other people were pointed out to me. Who were they?
- 16:34Oh, Forbes's older sister, Agatha, for one, A real aristocratic
- 16:38type. You can cross her off your list. Oh yeah, she disapproved
- 16:41of Forbes all right, but not to the extent of sticking a knife in
- 16:45him. I'm pretty sure it would have been beneath her dignity, if nothing
- 16:48else. Besides, she didn't leave the main room during the party either.
- 16:52Then there was Helen, Helen who I never did find out her last name.
- 16:57She arrived at the party late in four seemed to zero in on her
- 17:00right away, zero in. I mean, he spent the rest of the
- 17:03evening with her. They danced for a while, and they went out on
- 17:07the terrace, and come to think of it, I never did see her
- 17:11come back inside, and I didn't see Forbes again either until I went to
- 17:15his roman found him dead. I see, we shall try to find this
- 17:18Helen. Can you describe her well? I didn't get nearly as close a
- 17:23look as I'd have liked to. Oh yeah, from what I could see,
- 17:26a real doll, Lieutenant dark here, turn up nose, fine complexion,
- 17:30mister dolla. We need an objective description, not an appreciation. At
- 17:36the time, I was more interested in her as a prospect than a suspect.
- 17:40I see, And you say, who knew none of the other guests.
- 17:42That's right, We've been unable to find any sort of guest list.
- 17:45I don't waste your time looking. There isn't anything. Yeah. Forbes explained
- 17:49that he had a charming habit of inviting whoever he ran into. He said
- 17:53that half of the fun wasn't seeing who turned up. All that complicates matters,
- 17:56doesn't It? Sure does? Call up diamond fifths are not unknown.
- 18:02That was getting keep down, No, I imagine that. Here are some
- 18:04photos of known Jeel thieves mug shots. Please see if you recognize any of
- 18:11these people as having been at the party. It would be a little hard
- 18:15to remember, you know. People were drifting in and out all evening and
- 18:19it was Wait a minute, who's this guy? That is Julio biac got
- 18:26jeeol thief. Do recognize him? Starky guy? M certain looks familiar.
- 18:32I can't see the place him. Could he have been at the party?
- 18:34Oh it's possible, but I can't be sure. Perhaps it will come do
- 18:38later. I hope something comes to me sooner or later. That diamond,
- 18:42for instance, But at this point I had to admit it didn't look very
- 18:48like one murder sixty suspects. You get better odds than that on a rouette
- 18:53wheel. I left headquarters and decided to walk around a little see if I
- 18:57could coax up some kind of idea. It is to my next step.
- 19:00I went down to the waterfront and looked around. Nice view, no ideas.
- 19:06Then, as I was walking along a narrow, deserted street, I
- 19:08realized I had company. The shadow from the top of the building next to
- 19:11me ran along the middle of the street and I could see a silhouette.
- 19:15I stopped, so did the shadow on top of the building. I started
- 19:19up again, so did the shadow. I started edging out away from the
- 19:23sidewalk for a look. The shadow raised its arms suddenly, and I ducked
- 19:27a large building tile crashed to the sidewalk right where I'd been a second ago.
- 19:32I jumped for a riggedy fire escape over my head and scrambled up to
- 19:33the roof. Nobody in sight, and roofs stretching out in all directions,
- 19:38warehouses, loading sheds. Whoever it was could have been a block away by
- 19:42now. Pretty ironic, somebody trying to take me out of the ball game
- 19:47when I didn't even know which team had the ball. I went back to
- 19:56my hotel room. Two steps inside I stopped cold. I caught a whiff
- 20:03of what smelled like a pretty expensive perfume. It certainly wasn't my shaving lotion.
- 20:08Helen Johnny Wow, Shela, Yeah, yeah, I remember now,
- 20:15you were wearing that perfume at the party last night. I've been waiting for
- 20:18you. Let's talk, uh any particular subject last night? What happened?
- 20:25Johnny? Give me that you were there too. You remember I left before
- 20:27it happened. I think, what do you mean? You think? Yes,
- 20:30I had a few too many last night. I don't remember some of
- 20:33it. No, you are making pretty good sense. When I was talking
- 20:36to you well after that, I mean and you were withered enough to react
- 20:40when Forbes and Helen went out on the terrace together. Don't, Johnny,
- 20:45did you do it? Oh? Oh, well, now that's a sweech.
- 20:48I'm not kidding, Johnny. You went to his room. There's only
- 20:49one way you'd know that, Sheila, you were outside somewhere watching. Yes.
- 20:56After I left, I went around in the back, and pretty soon
- 20:57Helen came out of his room. She was carrying something. Oh what,
- 21:02don't worry. It wasn't the diamond. I was close enough to see it.
- 21:06Even if I hadn't been, I guess i'd have known. You mean,
- 21:07it was a small bottle of perfume. That was always the first step
- 21:12perfume, and always the same kind, the kind you're wearing. Yes,
- 21:19it's got a great name forever. What happened? Then I walked around the
- 21:26garden a few minutes, trying to decide whether to have it out with Andy
- 21:27once and for all. I started back toward the terrace. Then I saw
- 21:32you heading for his room, so I left. I said, don't,
- 21:34Johnny, if I'd done it, would I have told you I was out
- 21:37in the garden. You would if you were afraid somebody had seen you there
- 21:41and would tell me about it. Oh, and I suppose you figured out
- 21:45a motive for me too, A couple of possibilities. You told me you'd
- 21:48been on a merry go round with Fors for a long time. Maybe you
- 21:52couldn't stand the thought of anyone else getting aboard Helen. That sort of things
- 21:56happened before, Johnny. Or maybe you figured the only way to get off
- 21:59that marry Garund was to get rid of the guy who ran it, and
- 22:02the diamond and good bye you a lot of rides somewhere else. And I
- 22:08thought I was the cynic. You really have a nice opinion of people,
- 22:12haven't you. I'm afraid most of the people I get myself involved with on
- 22:15these jobs aren't very nice. I didn't do it all right? If you
- 22:19didn't, I'm sure, Lieutenant Van I I'll find out. I know.
- 22:22I'm on my way there now. He phoned me an hour ago. I
- 22:26thought i'd stop buy and talk to you before I went. Johnny, you
- 22:32don't really think I could do a thing like that, do you? I
- 22:37guess not? You One thing I am interested in, though, What's that
- 22:42You're finally off the merry Garund? How does it feel it? Isn't real
- 22:49That merry garand was all I ever knew. She walked out of the room
- 22:57looking well empty is the best word I can think of, and I kept
- 23:02wondering what she'd been like before the merry Garana. The rest of the day
- 23:07I spent composing soothing cablegrams in reply to angry ones from McNab of Troy Eastern
- 23:11Indemnity. The inquest was the following morning, but the verdict was no help
- 23:15death at the hands of person or person's unknown. Lieutenantvent Tile told me that
- 23:22Forbes's sister Agatha had decided to shove off that afternoon on the Southern Empress.
- 23:26So I went down to the dock at aboard ship an hour before sailing,
- 23:29hoping I could get in award with her. Farewell parties were clogging the lounges
- 23:33and the passageways. I waited outside Agatha forbes State rum until she arrived.
- 23:37Miss Forbes, Oh, mister Dalla, isn't it Yes? I didn't have
- 23:41a chance to meet you at your brother's party. Tell me about you.
- 23:45It's too bad you weren't able to persuade him to put that diamond in the
- 23:48safety sooner. Miss Forbes. I wonder if you'd answer a few questions.
- 23:52I am completely exhausted. I don't wish to talk about it, but I
- 23:56made my statement to the police. There's nothing for ad about the diamond.
- 24:00In too much publicity. About the entire tragedy as it is, I have
- 24:04no wish to add to it. I'm very sorry, mister Dolan. It
- 24:08should be in New York in a month or so. Perhaps I shall have
- 24:11recovered from the experience sufficiently by then to talk about it. Intelligent. Only
- 24:15trouble is by then the diamond could be in tim Bucktowharson. See you later,
- 24:19Miss Forbes. What snapped me into action was a glimpse of a girl
- 24:22at the end of the passageway, just entering the lounge. I couldn't be
- 24:26sure, but it looked like Helen. By the time I reached the lounge,
- 24:29she was nowhere in sight. Then I saw another familiar face over in
- 24:33one corner, the mugshot i'd seen at police headquarters. Julio be our jewel
- 24:36thief. Now I had him pegged. He'd been the stocky bartender at Forbes
- 24:40party, the guy who disappeared just before the murder. He spotted me and
- 24:44ducked into a passageway. I went after he turned a corner, and that
- 24:47was his mistake, blind alley, so I closed in on we circle.
- 24:51Now I was at the blind end, and that was my mistake, because
- 24:53suddenly there was a knife in his hand. He held it low like an
- 24:56expert. Now, mister Dollar, oh you must have a trunk full of
- 24:59knives. Oh, I need these wands, just like the one you slipped
- 25:03into Forbes. Huh you lunch at me. I ducked to one side and
- 25:07kicked to the knife, step world and door. But now I had it.
- 25:15I'm glad you had him, sent a shawl and locked up, mister
- 25:18Dolla. It may be we found our killer, but not the diamond,
- 25:22Lieutenant. It was not on me nowhere. And that can mean just one
- 25:26thing. Either Julio was working with somebody who was sitting on the Southern Empress,
- 25:30or he's after somebody aboard who has the diamond. In that case,
- 25:33mister, in that case, the Southern Empress is going to have another passenger
- 25:37me. I checked with a purser who agreed to squeeze me aboard. Then
- 25:45I headed back to my hotel room to pick up my luggage. I could
- 25:48still smell Sheena's perfume in the room. Then as I bent over to lock
- 25:52my suitcase, I spot in a movement out of the corner of my eye.
- 25:55I tried to whirl, but too late. Something hard connect to the
- 25:57back of my left ear and I went down and out. I don't know
- 26:07how long it was before I came to The room was swimming, but I
- 26:10managed to get to the window and look out. Then I realized somebody had
- 26:14voted me the man they'd least like to take a cruise with. The Southern
- 26:18Empress was under way and steaming out of the harbor. Now here's our star
- 26:36to tell you about tomorrow's intriguing episode of this week story. Tomorrow, I
- 26:41take a trip, all right, a one way trip. Join us,
- 26:44won't you? Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. Yours Truly Johnny Dollar is starring
- 27:04Bob Bailey, is transcribed in Hollywood, written by Robert Rife. It is
- 27:08produced and directed by Jack Johnstone. Be sure to join us tomorrow night,
- 27:14same time in station for the next exciting episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar.
- 27:19Roy Rowan speaking, welcome back. This sounds like it's gonna be fun with
- 27:48a lot of changing location and really kind of an epic chase in search of
- 27:56this really expensive acklace. Of course, the CRU's getting away is not something
- 28:00that's insurmountable for Johnny, but it will require a bit of doing. I
- 28:06also like the scene where really we got a picture of Johnny's compassion, kind
- 28:15of struggling with his own experience in his world weariness. He is very open
- 28:22in terms of being willing to consider anyone a suspect. It's somewhat absurd to
- 28:26ask someone that you met and spoke to for a few minutes, you know,
- 28:32or do you think I'm capable of the crime? Well, you know,
- 28:34he has no way of knowing. But I thought that Johnny's overall reaction
- 28:41really was just a good character moment. All right, Listener comments, And
- 28:47this one comes from Kim. Another literacy reference snuck in by the Johnny Dollar
- 28:52writers. Why is the U? And this is regarding episode eleven fifty one,
- 28:59the Long Shop matter. Why does the Alibi have a doctor from so
- 29:03far away? Some people have a doctor in Patterson, New Jersey. Why
- 29:07Patterson, of all places, there is only one notable doctor from Patterson,
- 29:12that is doctor William Carlos Williams. His practice was in the next town of
- 29:18East Rutherford, but his big, long epic poem was Patterson. Williams went
- 29:26to college with Ezra Pound, hung out on Cape Cod with Eugene O'Neill,
- 29:32and was Allen Ginsberg's family doctor. His one poem that everybody knows is the
- 29:37Red Wheelbarrow. So much depends upon a red wheelbarrow glazed with rainwater beside the
- 29:47white chickens. The writers were part of the World War two generation. The
- 29:52brightest of those who survived attended first rate universities. On the GI bill,
- 29:56they would know who Williams was, even if the audience did it. At
- 30:00least that's what I surmise. Well, thanks so much, and certainly I
- 30:06think in many of the Golden Age programs there was not so much playing to
- 30:11the least common denominator. There were greater cultural, moral, and philosophical value
- 30:19in many of the programs the way they were done. You take a watch,
- 30:25for example, a show like Have Done Will Travel and the character of
- 30:30Paladin freely quote Shakespeare, the Bible, and a wide variety of works from
- 30:37all over the world, and they clearly trusted the audience and were willing to
- 30:45do some different things that were clever and interesting, and that is one of
- 30:48the appeal of the Golden Age programs. All right, well, that will
- 30:52do it for today. If you have a common send it to me Box
