Latest / Skin Anarchy / The Pharmacology of Wellness: Dr. Stephanie Redmond on the Future of Supplements
Transcript
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Hey guys, welcome back.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Today's episode is all about nutrition and wellness and endocinology and just hormonal health in general.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: I'm so excited because we have a new expert with us today.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Dr.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Stephanie Redmond is a pharmd.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: She has a PhD in pharmacology.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: She is nationally recognized as an expert in optimizing health through natural ingredients and lifestyle changes.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: As the founder of the medication therapy management practice at Ridgeview Clinics in Minnesota, she specializes in endocrinology and hormone disorders.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: And now she's really leading charge with her own brand and bringing a new twist to this whole area that I think a lot of times is led by people who don't have the right credentials.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: I know that's a mouthful, but I really wanted to give you guys a little background on her.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: So welcome, Dr.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Redmond.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: I'm so excited to talk to you and to debunk some stuff and dive more into your work.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Yes, thank you so much, Dr.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Ecta, for having me on.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: I'm really excited.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: There's a lot to talk about in the supplement arena.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: And I'm excited to jump into colostrum and hopefully some of the topics around GLP1.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I'm really excited and I love your supplements.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: I just want to say that from the get-go.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I've been trying them myself, so I can't wait to dive in.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: But I want to learn more about you because you have this really heavy pharmacy background.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And I know that that's often never spoken about in the chain of just knowledge when it comes to medicine.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: We never really dive into the pharmacology side of things.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: And so I'd love to learn more about you and what got you into that field of science.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And just tell us more about that and walk us down memory lane.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I sometimes think people hear pharmacist and then supplements, and it's almost like an oxymoron.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: It's definitely been an interesting journey.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Like you said, I have my doctorate in pharmacy.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: I actually first fell in love with diabetes management.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: So I'm board certified and advanced diabetes management.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: I'm a certified diabetes educator.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: And that kind of stemmed from way back when I'm from Minnesota.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: I went to the University of Minnesota.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: I did my residency there.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: I'm really not very interesting in that regard.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: But I remember in my residency, I had a patient hand me an insulin pump.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: And I was like, what do I do with this?
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: Nobody taught me about this in pharmacy school.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: And that led to a whole cascade of actually jumping into endocrinology, which you opened with.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Like endocrinology is anything hormone-related.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: A big piece of that ended up being insulin hormone management and diabetic, really outside of residency.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: I saw a very important role for pharmacists, not just in community pharmacy, not just in retail pharmacy, but in a clinic working alongside medical doctors like yourself, physicians, to really comprehensively manage patients' medications and over-the-counter therapies.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Because frankly, a lot of physicians, a lot of healthcare providers aren't trained to do this.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: And no one is really diving into dietary supplements.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: So I would holistically look at what are all the medications you're taking?
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: What are all the over-the-counter therapies you're taking?
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: How do they fit together?
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: Do they interact?
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Are they safe?
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Are you dosing them appropriately?
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: What's the best way to take them?
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: And it just from there led into this whole practice because I think there was a need and people were hungry for that.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: I love that though.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: And I think that it's interesting because pharmacists are are often the last stop in healthcare.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: And I've always hated that because I feel like I've learned more from my colleagues in pharmacy science than anything else.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: So, like when I remember, like even back in pre-med, let's go all the way back.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: I remember like we took all the same classes, you know what I mean?
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: And pre-med took all the same classes.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: You went to school, you get this entire education.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: And then when you come to pharmacology in medical school, it's one class, it's one course, and that's it.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: And that's the extent of what we learn.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: And then we're told to go out there, like figure it out.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: But it's like you don't figure it out.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: So then you end up asking questions about bioavailability and pharmacokinetics, and you start learning from pharmacology people.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: So it's really interesting to me how the system is set up because I feel like you guys need to be pushed up, you know, sooner so that we can get more knowledge.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: I'm definitely an advocate for that.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: And it really came full circle because, like, my background, I grew up working at Walgreens pharmacy.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: So I was in the community setting, staring at a computer, doing insurance, talking to people over the counter too about their vitamins, which really comes full circle also.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: But I got to see that end of it after a patient is prescribed a medication by their physician coming to fill it the pharmacy with an abundance of questions.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: But then also with my medication therapy management practice, it was unique in that you, as the physician, you do what you're trained to do, the diagnostic, the workup, the review of systems, the labs.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: And then you involve the pharmacist at that point of care to go, what is the best prescription medication for this patient?
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Are there any natural supplements we should be considering in conjunction with their medications to optimize how their experience?
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Or are there things that we should consider before we reach for medications, especially replenishing nutritional and vitamin deficiencies?
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: It's like otherwise we're just band-aiding with more and more medications before we get to the source of the problem.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, 100% agree.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: And I think oftentimes this happens a lot more than it doesn't.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: If you've ever been in a critical care setting, you realize that a lot of the people that come through, a lot of the things are caused by medication side effects.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: They're not, many times critical care patients are not truly, you know, what you're thinking like in a motor vehicle accident or something.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: No, they're coming in for like drug interactions, drug side effects.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: And so it's very important to understand how just these normal, like the chemistry of it all, like how it works in the human body.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: And then when you move into the world of supplements, it gets even more complex because people are taking a 10 stack of supplements, and then they're mixing that with drugs that they're taking for their actual comorbidity.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: So it becomes this world that we're living in is so complicated with when it comes to the supplement world because of that.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: And so I'm very curious about just understanding that more because there is no formal education on this stuff.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: It's like you have to really lean on the experts like yourself to understand.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: Unless you're proactively really trying to get more information in that arena, that's not part of a standard curriculum, it's not part of the standard credentialing and recertification and continuing to ed.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: I've met with patients that take 60 medications and insulin and supplements.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: And you're like, how do you manage this?
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: The most common drug therapy problem we see in prescriptions, I think is actually what led me launching my own dietary supplement lines.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: And that is dose too low.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: Patients are put on a lot of medications, managing side effects medications and more medications, but they're really not titrated to an optimal dose.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: So they're on like suboptimal doses of many different medications.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: And so, really, as I'm guessing we're going to talk about some of the supplements, everything I make is at a clinically studied therapeutic dose.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: And I think when we look at the supplement industry, it's like a lot of stuff is just pixie dusted doses or marketing doses.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Like we include this, but it's really not at a meaningful dose to give you benefits, right?
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: That's really the big question.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: When is this going to work?
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about the real foundational stuff.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Let's take, for example, Clostrum.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: I know you have a phenomenal product in your range.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: And Clostrum, I think, came on my radar as an over-the-counter product, I think about what, five years ago?
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Maybe five years ago.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: And at first I was incredibly confused.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna lie to you.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: I was just like, but I don't know what's going on.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: But then I started reading more and more into it.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: And it was very fascinating how people are now discovering, like in everyday routine, like all the benefits of these things.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: So let's talk about clostrum.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: What is clostrum for to just to educate us?
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: What should we know as general consumers about a supplement like this?
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and colostrum is definitely newer, it's trending.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: This is interesting.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: I actually was just speaking last week at Mom Con, which is exactly what it sounds like.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: It was a conference of 2,500 moms coming to get together and learn about health and just celebrate.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: But colostrum is if you're not a mom or not familiar with closter, what colostrum is, let's back up, right?
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: Colostrum is the first milk that all mammals produce.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: So if you're a mom and you're breastfeeding during the first 24 to 72 hours, you'll produce what they call this liquid gold.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: And it is the most nutrient-dense food for our babies that's rich in all of these like bioactive nutrients.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: We think about growth factors, we think about peptides, but specifically there's regenerative peptides in there.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: It's rich in minerals.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: But it's it's like a super food, right?
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: And so I think colostrum has taken the dietary supplement industry by storm over the last few years.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: How do we get colostrum?
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Because we're not sourcing human colostrum.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: That would be a huge supply chain issue.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: So everything you're really seeing over the counter and our product too, my Dr.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: Stephanie's colostrum is sourced from cows.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: It's bovine colostrum.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: And so they they basically source it from the cows over the first few days that they're collecting excess colostrum after the calves are fully fed.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: And then we've packaged that into a dietary supplement.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Oh, wow.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's interesting.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: So you had mentioned like there's a lot of benefits, and that is according to what I've read as well.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of like immunologically, there's a lot of benefits as well to colostrum, the immune response that the body has.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: It helps a lot.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: That's very interesting.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: So, bovine, like how does that work?
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Have you dug into this in terms of the compatibility of bovine colostrum with humans?
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: What are the compatibility studies on that?
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: I love that because that's where I really saw a white space in the colostrum arena.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: Bovine colostrum is for cows, right?
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: It's for calves.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: So it's not really optimized for human consumption.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: I would say the studies show that like the peptides, the glycoproteins in bovine colostrum are about a 45%, 40 to 45% match to what human colostrum is.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: So that's a big discrepancy.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: What that means is you're not getting the full benefits of the colostrum, but also more importantly, the proteins in the bovine colostrum that your body doesn't recognize causes actually like pro-inflammation instead of lowering inflammation.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: So women like myself, if I take a lot of different colostrum, not saying anything necessarily wrong with those colostrum options, but if I just take a straight bovine colostrum, I get really bad gas, stomach upset, the things that are like opposite of what colostrum is supposed to do for you.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: So I have actually never been able to take colostrum or tolerate colostrum until I launched our new purified colostrum capsule.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: So what we have done is we have partnered with a company that has cracked the code to basically use AI technology to purify and filter the spobine colostrum so that it uses only the glycoproteins that are found in human colostrum.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: And this means like a myriad of things, right?
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: Like you can imagine it's more effective, it's better recognized already by your body, so no side effects.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's very fascinating.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was gonna say because oftentimes you do see that in the supplement world, right?
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Where you're getting it from a source that is not human compatible.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: So that's very interesting what you did.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: That's that makes a lot of sense because I think a lot of brands don't really talk about it.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: There's not a lot of transparency there.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: And that's what I saw with colostrum in general and specifically was that's why I could never get on that bandwagon the beginning because I was, I just don't know how this is gonna work with human physiology.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that makes sense.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: And so this is a branded colostrum, it's literally called supercolostrum, which God bless, we like that.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: So supercolostrum in clinical studies, like head to head against traditional bobine colostrum, or even lactoferrin, or they studied against turmeric or curcumin.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it shows that this supercolostrum is seven times more powerful, has seven times the anti-inflammatory benefits than traditional bobine colostrum.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: So you're really getting much more robust benefits on your gut health, hair health, skin complexion, immunity support, which we can talk about how it does that.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: But again, no side effects.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: And I think what is so cool about this is I think dosage form can be very limiting for some people.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: I love drink mixes.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Like I told you as I'm opening this podcast.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: Like I'm mixing up my hydration.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: I love getting my supplements and drink mixes.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: I think it's great for absorption.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: I think it's just like something enjoyable to do.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: But I do struggle with I've just like I said, I've tried these colostrum drink mixes, and there's something about it you're like, I don't really love this.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: With super colostrum, you only need 100 milligrams because it's so much more potent than the bovine colostrum powder.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: So instead of like the heaping scoops of powders, you're getting that full effective dose and just one little capsule every day.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: And it's interesting.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: You designed yours for a very specific moment, right?
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Which is postpartum.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: What is the stuff that we need to know here?
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: Because I've seen everybody take it, right?
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: We're like 20 year olds are taking it, they're not pregnant, they've never been pregnant.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Everybody at this point is taking colostrum.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: So, what is the real science here?
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: Should we be taking it, even though we're having gone through a pregnancy and we're not trying to support like lactation?
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Does it matter for us to take it?
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: Great question.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: I have so many things to say to that.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: But number one, short answer, no, it doesn't matter.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: This is beneficial for everyone.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: And I would say stay tuned.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: I am launching a colostrum product that is really marketed and geared towards all people, right?
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Men, women.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: This specific product, my Dr.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: Stephanie's primal mom blends, colostrum, I'm targeting towards postpartum beauty and gut health.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: And that's because number one, I think when we look at the postpartum space for pregnancy and lactation, there is hypersensitivity to making sure products are safe.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: And so this is third-party tested at multiple stages very rigorously to make sure that it's safe from a sourcing perspective and finished good perspective for moms.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: But I also think that yes, while this is beneficial for everyone, when I look at a woman's journey, there are three huge instances in that journey where we see tremendous fluctuations in hormone shifts.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: One is puberty, obviously.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: The other is postpartum, and the other is through perimenopause and the menopause transition.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: And postpartum and perimenopause can very closely mirror each other.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: And that's why colesterol can be so extra powerful in these stages.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: So when we look at postpartum, your estrogen, your progesterone, I mean until immediately after giving birth, and then it drops very low, and it does that so suddenly.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: So you have this vulnerable period after postpartum where your immune system is more prone to attack.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: You're more prone to developing autoimmune conditions.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Your hair follicles have just gone into shock because of this drastic hormone fluctuation.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: Your skin is experiencing imbalances, your gut microbiome has totally shifted.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: And so we're seeing more instances of leaky gut s syndrome and that intestinal permeability, more changes in bloating and stomach distension.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: And so colosterum can be such a powerful tool during that time with all of these super food nutrients to help with all of those things, right?
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: It helps accelerate the conversion of your telogen to the antigen hair growth cycle.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: It can help with skin appearance, it helps support that immune system.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: But really, through anywhere where we have mucosal barriers, it can help stimulate growth of repairing those barriers, right?
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: So that's why it can be so effective for gut health.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: That's why it can be so effective for immune support.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: I want to also say, yes, that postpartum shift, but also perimenopause.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: Think about perimenopause.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: Your estrogen's fluctuating up down, up down, up down until it plummets, your progesterone is declining.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: And so I also think the colostrum can be so wonderful for women from that 35 years old through 55 years old, really starting to experience hormone shifts from aging as well.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: That's so interesting.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's really interesting because I think that when we think about something that is meant by nature to be so nutrient-rich, that's why I asked you that.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: I was like, why did you pick postpartum?
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: But it makes sense to me because you need a lot of support during that period.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: But no, this is very fascinating.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: I want to shift gears a little bit though, because you have some really great GLP one support supplements.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: And I love this because everybody is on a GLP one.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: I know that people we don't like to admit it, but how many of you out there are taking it or know somebody that's taking it?
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: And I feel like at this point, it's just better to talk about it rather than keep hiding.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: And so I want to talk about what does our body need when you're on this journey, your GLP journey, weight loss, what does the body really need?
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: And what did you design your supplements for this category to really incorporate?
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: And some of my history in this space too, just to give some context as to my experience and like how I developed.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: I have two products for GLP on support that I'll get into.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: But especially coming from my background in diabetic care and obesity management.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: 10 years ago, I was a national speaker for all these GLP1 pharmaceuticals.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: I was a speaker for Ozempic.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: I sat on the US strategic advisory board for Eli Lilly.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: I was very passionate about this space.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: And I remember when I would travel around teaching physicians about prescribing GLP1.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: They're like, what?
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: This is so crazy.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: And now it is really quite an out-of-bot experience to see that like everyone is taking it and this is just like in the water.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: And I think GLP1s are amazing medications.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: I think they are life-changing for people.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: I think there has to be education and nutritional support paired with GLP1.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: Part of that is one of my products that I am so excited to share is launching our train widen target next Sunday.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: My two GLP1 items, GLP1 Buddy, which if you're on a GLP1 medication, helps replenish nutritional deficiencies.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: It's really that GLP1 user support if you're on a medication to help you enjoy your GLP1 journey and get the most out of your medication, maximize your results, mitigate some of those side effects and imbalances that we can see with GLP1 medications.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: So you can just stay on therapy and get more out of it.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: So what GLP1 Buddy is, and we can get more into it, is a vitamin, creatine, and digestive relief drink mix.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: Now, on the other hand, I also would love to talk about my GLP Wonder.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: GLP Wonder is a natural GLP1 booster.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: So this could be taken to augment your GLP1 medication.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: This could be taken if you're not someone who's considering a GLP1 medication, but you're really wanting some gentle GLP1 benefits, it can help reduce cravings and hunger in a gentle way.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I like that you created both of these, but uh especially the buddy, GLP1 buddy, because it has that digestive support, which I think this is the biggest side effect most of us experience, right?
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: When we're on this, is that your digestive system literally your gut motility has slowed down.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: You need to digest your food.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: I know a lot of people who literally cannot eat any solid foods when they start.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: It's like they go on this like smoothie diet because they can't tolerate even a little bit of anything solid.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: So I think when you're going through this, it can be quite a shock.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: I think that it can be really frustrating because you're not hungry, but at the same time, you gotta eat something.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: So like people find themselves in this weird limbo.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: What were some of the digestive enzymes that you found to be helpful for this?
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: Or what did you actually put in it that you found to be really good?
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, great point.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: And to reiterate, with the at least with the digestive component, right?
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: I'd say there are studies showing that most or like about 70-ish percent of people who started GLP1 will experience some sort of GL or digestive side effect.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: And that does lessen with time on therapy, right?
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: As long as you're titrating your dose slowly.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: But we use a specific digestive enzyme blend called digestad that has protease, amylase, cellulase, lipase, lactase.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: So it has all of the digestive enzymes that you can need to help break down your food because what you're saying, it slows digestive motility, right?
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: GLP1, when we eat, our bodies naturally make GLP1.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: And the role of that GLP1 is to slow how food moves through your stomach.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: So your body isn't absorbing glucose or sugar as quickly.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: So you get a blunted spike in your blood sugar.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: It also helps your body make more insulin.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: But because it's slowing digestive or delaying gastrogantine, you're left with herping, nausea, indigestion, constipation.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: And so with the digestive enzymes can help, ginger can help alleviate some of that.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Nausea, upset stomach, just a great all-around option to promote digestive health and regularity.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's really fascinating.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: I think that it's just an interesting world we live in now because we went from diet supplements to now where we are now.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: I think the supplement industry has regained its ethics.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: I'd like to think of it like that.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: When I see brands like yours, I'm like, we needed this about 10 years ago when everybody was on like a diet pill.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: Everybody was pushing supplements that were just unethical.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: It was such a different world back then.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: So when I see a brand like yours, I'm like very excited to see the shift.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: And to see that we're finally getting to this point where I know one of the side effects of GLP1 being on the rise is people have really paid attention to their health.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: Like they've started listening to their health.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, my body needs help.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: And so one of the components of that is you start thinking about vitamins.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: You start thinking about supporting your body.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: What are the electrolytes?
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: What are the micronutrients that I need?
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: Like those kinds of things come up.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: And so I think we're in the golden era right now of supplements.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: Like I feel like this is going to really shift the way that the future is for how we're getting everything that we need, whether it's through our diet or through trusted sources.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Very exciting.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: I think it's setting us up for much better foundational health and healing.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: And it's interesting because even look at Target.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: Like I talked about our launches with Target.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: And I'm hot on that because I'm just I'm grateful that they've invested and partnered with us as a smaller brand and like a doctor-formulated brand and a brand back by science, not just a brand that's hot because of influencers or celebrity.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: We're building our reputation in the space by having dietary supplements that work and make a difference.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: But anyhow, when I look at Target and a lot of other retailers too, their weight loss categories actually dwindled with the launch of GLP one supplements.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: And we've seen a real shift.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: And here's not just like a hydroxy cut that's loaded with stimulants or other supplements that maybe aren't necessarily safe, foundational health, but like these GLP one support items, they're putting in digestive care at Target.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: So it's like they're really identifying that this is a hormone produced in your gut.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: Your experience stems from digestive health, right?
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: And that stems into metabolic health.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: And I think when they got rid of some of the weight loss that's in these supplement arenas, we want to love our bodies and it's okay, like we don't need to lose all this weight.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: And I agree with that, but I also think there's this comeback and resurgence of metabolic health is so important.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: Yes, we want to love our bodies, but we have to also make sure we're metabolically healthy.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: So I think that's wonderful.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: No, I can't tell you how frustrating it's been to watch what obesity has done to on a mass level and what has happened with metabolic health over the years.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: I know from the clinical perspective, there this whole term metabolic syndrome didn't even exist like what, 20 years ago or something.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: And if it did exist, nobody was talking about it.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: And now here we are in a world where, yeah, 19-year-olds are having like ridiculous insulin resistance problems.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: And so it's a very different world.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: And I think this is what I meant when I was saying like the future, I really think is going to have to be a place where we are embracing supplements in a whole different way because we're not getting the same stuff in our food anymore.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: That's another thing, right?
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: We're not buying how many times are you buying organic vegetables versus the crap, that kind of thing.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: So this is a big problem, I think, that is going to be resolved by companies who have this ethical compass when they're creating supplements, because a lot of the supplementation that we need, not just I want this, it's not just about I want this and I want to be that 1% of people that take supplements to optimize health.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: It's gonna become a need, I think, on a mass level, right?
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: Where we're like, yeah, you're gonna need something.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: Look at the vitamin D thing that happened, right?
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: Where everybody had low vitamin D.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, I can tell you, I can't tell you the last time I saw any patient that didn't have a low vitamin D.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: It's crazy.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: So I think the same thing goes for when you think about a very nutrient-rich in source like clostrum that we just discussed, or supporting your gut health, supporting your metabolic health.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: These are all very serious conversations that need to be had, I think, on every level, regardless of your age, because now the food and everything that we're interacting with is affecting that.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: So it's very interesting.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: I want to dive into like the testing that you did because I think this is something we never get to speak about is understanding the testing, the filters that supplements should go through, right?
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: When it comes to testing them for whatever it might be, obviously heavy metals and stuff, but just can you walk us through that a little bit in terms of what you found to be very important to test for and to validate?
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'd love to talk about that.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: And honestly, as you said, testing, I first was gonna give you kudos for testing vitamin D levels in your patients.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: I know we're talking about third-party testing in our supplements, but I think too, before I jump into that, I think if anyone listening to this podcast, just being proactive and checking your levels.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: And there's so many online companies now that will give you baseline tests of your metabolic health.
- 27:17SPEAKER_01: And you really should know, and that's a great way to monitor if these supplements are working for you.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: Yes, are you noticing a difference, but are you seeing that reflected in your lab results too?
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: But no, let's talk about third-party testing because this is a huge issue in the dietary supplement arena.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: A great example.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: So I have my colostrum, I have my GLP wonder, you know, these and GLP One Buddy too.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: So what we check for, and you should expect this from all supplements you take, what we check for is before when we source all these ingredients, we make sure there's no heavy metals, pesticides, other contaminants before blending.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: But after blending to during blending and after blending, in GLP1 body in each packet, I say you're gonna get 900 micrograms of vitamin A.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: You need to make sure the company you're buying from has checked that packet to make sure you're getting 900 micrograms of vitamin A.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: So it's not just the contamination and the heavy metals and pesticides in there, which I think heavy metals are probably what we hear about most in the media.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: But checking for label claim to ensure that you're actually getting what is on the label instead of sub therapeutic doses.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: And a couple of things I find shocking.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: One, a lot of retailers don't necessarily require this testing.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: Now, I think they do their due diligence to work with good companies, obviously.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: But CBS is the only retailer that before they put a product on their shelf, they have their own third-party testing program to ensure you meet all those requirements.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: And then every year they pull the product off the shelf and they test it to make sure that you're still meeting the label claim.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: One, two, three years later.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: So that's really cool.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's amazing.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: I didn't know that.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: I didn't know CBS was like, that's great.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: It's a tested to be trusted program.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: But like I will quickly say over the next couple minutes here too, berberine is one that's so adulterated, so low in so many supplements.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: We have my Dr.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: Stephanie's carbon sugar blocker has berberine in it.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: I launched this seven, eight years ago.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: So we actually launched a berberine product before I feel like berberine was really on trend.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: But anyhow, berberine is a very difficult product to put in anything other than a capsule.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: It tastes really bad.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: You can't visit, you can't get it into a gummy, you can't get it into a drink mix.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: I'm shopping in the stores with my husband, and I saw berberine gummy, and I'm like, that's BS.
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: You can't get berberine into a gummy.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: We got it off the store shelf, send it in for testing.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: Said there was 1500 milligrams of berberine in there, and there was less than two milligrams.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: On a store shell.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: This isn't just Amazon.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: That's crazy.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: You gotta really just look for that third-party testing certification.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: We have launched a new initiative too, where we're including our COA, so you can really see transparency in the testing results and just know what you're getting.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: But wait, so I have a question though.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: I have a question because this is something I've heard and I don't know how true it is.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: So gummies, I've heard when you put a supplement in a gummy form in general, it's like you're not really getting the same amount that you would, like in a cow.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: There's just no way to do it.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: And I don't know how real that is that true to some extent, especially with certain ingredients, it is, and that's because a few things.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: One, gummies are made through a very intensive like heat process, different than chews, like those Starburst chews on the market.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: I feel oh my gosh, force factor.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: They do a lot of chews like that.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: Chews are made with a cold process, gummies are made with a heat process.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: So a lot of ingredients can be very sensitive and denature during that heat process.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: Two, there's a lot of moisture in gummies.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: So recently, I guess it wasn't that recent, it was a couple years ago now, even probably.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: But like now, nutrition did a big test on all the creatine gummies out there and just show that the moisture in that gummy actually denatures some of the creatine too.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: So you're not getting the full dose of creatine.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: In my experience, we do have a couple of gummies on the market, but you can't do it with everything, right?
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: There's just certain ingredients that are very difficult to get at a therapeutic dose into a gummy.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: The best ingredients that go into a gummy are actually generally botanical ingredients, herbal ingredients that you can make highly standardized extracts.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: So I actually have for breastfeeding moms, I have lactation support gummies.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: These gummies use ingredients like moringa, milk thistle, shadowari root, but we use standardized extracts in a ratio of 20 to 10 to 1 potency.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: So you can use a small amount of it, but still get the therapeutic dose.
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: But I would say, as a general rule, yes, your vitamins, minerals, creatine, you won't get the same absorption that you get from a capsule or a powdered drink mix.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: However, it's probably better than zero, right?
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: So if I'm not gonna take a capsule, they're adverse to that.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: I like offering some other options for them too.
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: So it just depends, but you're right.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: That's interesting.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: That's very interesting.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because I I don't know, I had heard that a long time ago and I was just like curious, but it makes sense now because you explained that they go through a melting process.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, honestly, this is what gets me, and I see this across the board.
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: Skin care, makeup, like we when you process things with heat, and then you have these ridiculous claims about how much of something is in there.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: I just I think as consumers, we just have to start questioning that kind of thing.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: Like it across the board is if you know what it takes to create a product, just start asking questions.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: Like, did it survive that step?
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: What did you go through?
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: What were the conditions you put this through to get it to the final four?
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: I think we need to start asking brands to put like some sort of like transparency, like on their boxes.
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like you should be able to publish that, right?
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, we put it through this amount of heat, you know what I mean, or like whatever it is, and then this is what we saw afterwards, like before and after.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: Like the I don't know.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: That would be really cool to see that if brands were able to do that.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: Otherwise, it's scary what anyone can just say, isn't it?
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's especially now because you have longevity and everybody's got a supplement stack, and everybody's you know what I'm saying?
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: Like everyone's biohacking to oblivion, and I know you're not biohacking shit.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: You're just fill or whatever.
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: Speak the truth.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I just think it's a crazy world, but I think that supplements, I don't know, it's really good to see that you have brands like yours that are out there and you're doing it right, and there is a moral compass and what's guiding you.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: I know for me, supplements were a very scary world for a long time, especially growing up.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: It was always like in my family, it was like, don't take anything, don't do it.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: Like you don't know what's gonna be in there.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: So it's really cool to see the shift happen from that perspective where it's no, like I can actually take supplements now and not feel like I'm gonna kill myself.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: I agree, I agree.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: It has been a shift, and I'm excited to be a part of it.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I'm very excited, and I love your brand.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: I've been using two of the products and I really enjoy them.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: For anyone out there that's looking for anything, especially with GLP side, like the GLP products are phenomenal.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: I've been using them myself and I think they're really great.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: But in general, you're expanding your range, right?
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: So you have a lot of different options for people.
