- 0:24All right, everybody, you're listening to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show,
- 0:27the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world. PST Special coming
- 0:33your way here as the Philadelphia seventy six ers were absolutely trounced in Game seven
- 0:40of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Again a PST special podcast to get into this,
- 0:46I'm Jeff Warren and I felt the need to get on this microphone this
- 0:52evening after digesting Game seven, which was held up in Boston at the TD
- 0:58Bank Garden. Oh my gosh, it was the worst possible outcome for this
- 1:04Philadelphia seventy six ers team. It wasn't just a loss. It wasn't just
- 1:10you know, a couple bad bounces that didn't go the Sixers way. It
- 1:15wasn't just the officiating, which we've been talking about on this podcast. It
- 1:19was a complete breakdown of a team. It was a complete and utter failure
- 1:27of being in the moment and not meeting the moment. That's what this was
- 1:34about. And now questions are persisting about what happens to this team, what
- 1:40direction does this organization go into? And again, here, folks, I'm
- 1:46just talking randomly into a microphone with absolutely no agenda in front of me.
- 1:51Again, after digesting this utter debacle of sports that we saw today, of
- 2:00this basketball team completely completely imploding, I have to say I had hope and
- 2:07maybe you did too. Maybe you had some hope when when when when we
- 2:12had a dream start of the game for PJ Tucker, when he went four
- 2:15of six from the field, he had eleven points in the first quarter.
- 2:20Eleven points from PJ Tucker in the first quarter, My gosh, even even
- 2:28he even got the rebound that got him that that corner three on the sideline
- 2:32on that out of bounds play. Anyway, it was we thought good things
- 2:36were gonna happen. My god, my god, PJ Tucker getting it done
- 2:40here. Maybe other folks on this team are gonna step up and not have
- 2:46Joel Embiid and James Harden's shoulder the complete burden. But then we get into
- 2:51these two gentlemen, as we know, holy cow, talk about not meeting
- 2:54the moment, talk about not meeting the moment. The MVP of this league
- 3:00in Joel Embiid finishing this game with a dreadful fifteen points, dreadful, and
- 3:09at the half he had thirteen folks. Joe Ell Embiid ended the game with
- 3:15fifteen points. He had thirteen points at the half. My god, James
- 3:23Harden had six points at the end of the half. James Harden ended up
- 3:27with nine points on the day, nine points. Here in game seven,
- 3:34Where did it all go wrong? Where? What was the moment when it
- 3:38all went wrong for the Sixers? Because quite frankly, at one point during
- 3:44the third they were tied at fifty five fifty five. We saw that,
- 3:46right, I think we all saw that they were tied at fifty five fifty
- 3:52five in the third quarter, and then the Celtics just went on a twenty
- 3:54five to three run against this Sixers team. I don't even want to I'm
- 4:00a team. Actually, they don't want to call him a team. I
- 4:01want to say that they kind of were just like bodies out on the floor.
- 4:05There were just bodies out on the floor, you know. And I
- 4:09wonder if the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals are going to give them
- 4:14a little bit more of a run for their money than the than the Sixers
- 4:16did here in Game seven. Yes, I know, folks are gonna come
- 4:20back and say, well, they tied it up. They tied it up.
- 4:24Great, great, maybe you should have put this team away at the
- 4:30Wells Fargo Center in Game six when you had the opportunity to do so,
- 4:32when you were up three to two in the series. We're gonna get to
- 4:35Dock in just a little bit, by the way, in terms of three
- 4:40two series and Doc Rivers, we're gonna get to that in a bit.
- 4:44But again, let me go back to what I was just mentioning where it
- 4:47turned wrong for the Sixers and where the game turned in the Celtics favor.
- 4:54Look, everything shifted three and a half minutes into the second quarter, basically,
- 4:59you know, after a great Anthony Mountain block, the Sixers had a
- 5:02chance to get their lead to ten points. They had a chance to get
- 5:06their lead because they were leading, they had a chance to get their lead
- 5:09to ten points. Harden lost the ball. Of course, how many times
- 5:13have we seen this. Harden loses the ball while going in for a layup,
- 5:15committed that flagrant foul on the follow through. Then after Jalen Brown made
- 5:21the two resulting free throws, the Celtics just happen to find, of course,
- 5:26Robert Williams for an alley yoube, to make it a four point possession.
- 5:30They then picked up a steal and a fast break layup to cut the
- 5:34deficit all the way to two points. The whole run, that whole run
- 5:39there, folks, took twenty eight seconds. That it took twenty eight seconds.
- 5:44And from there the Celtics dominated. Jason Tatum delivered a brilliant performance.
- 5:49Fifty one points. Fifty one freaking points from Jason. I know I can't
- 5:56stand them. I can't stand them either, but fifty one points, thirteen
- 6:00rebounds, five assists, Jelen Brown twenty five points. Guess what, These
- 6:05two were the only ones who really did much of anything for the Celtics,
- 6:09and that's all they needed. That's all they needed because the Sixers just sat
- 6:13quietly around. Well, they'd let Jason Tatum put up fifty one. Yeah,
- 6:16he was on fire. Maybe there wasn't much, Maybe there wasn't much
- 6:20the Sixers could do about it. However, they didn't relate, didn't try
- 6:25too hard, and from an offensive standpoint and utter utter failure man, Jason
- 6:30Tatum delivered a brilliant performance, didn't he The Boston defense then they held Philadelphia
- 6:36to ten points in the third quarter, ten points in the third quarter.
- 6:43The fourth quarter was basically just a Celtics celebratory quarter. I guess that's what
- 6:48we could call it, my gosh, in a series that the Sixers came
- 6:56legitimately close to winning. This season ends here, Game seven in Boston,
- 7:00the most painful way possible, the most painful way possible, a twenty four
- 7:05point beat down. Meanwhile, James Harden and Joel and be a no show
- 7:12in this do or die game, the role players just really missing threes throughout
- 7:16the game, and the Sixers just suffering that most painful defeat possible. And
- 7:24now there's a ton of uncertainty heading into an offseason in which James Harden is
- 7:29a free agent. The questions are going to start about where the direction of
- 7:34this team is going to go. And we can talk about a few of
- 7:36those in just a bit here. I do need to take a break.
- 7:41I desperately need to take a break here. I'm gonna be back in just
- 7:45a bit and we're gonna finish things up here on this PST podcast, this
- 7:48PST special. Stick with us. We'll be right back, all right,
- 7:54folks, We are back. And I wanted to get into some doc river
- 7:58stats, some doc rivers previous experiences when it comes to the playoffs. Very
- 8:03interesting here. I gotta give a shout out to at barry On here for
- 8:09this tweet that I read, and I wanted to bring it up because I
- 8:15think we know Doc Rivers is not going to be around much longer. It's
- 8:18not going to be possible for him to keep his head coaching job of the
- 8:20Philadelphia seventy six ers. Let's go back to two thousand and three. He
- 8:24blew a three one lead in that playoff. Two thousand and nine, he
- 8:31blew a three to two lead. Two ten, he blew a three to
- 8:33two lead. Two thousand and twelve, he blew a three to two lead.
- 8:37Two fifteen, he blew a three to one lead, two twenty he
- 8:41blew a three to one lead. And in two thousand and twenty three,
- 8:45he blew a three to two lead with this Philadelphia seventy six ers team.
- 8:50How about this? How about this? And again got a credit at barry
- 8:52On here for this. Two thousand and five lost games seven at home.
- 8:58Twenty fourteen, choked away game five in a two to two series. In
- 9:03twenty sixteen, he lost a two to zero lead. Twenty seventeen, lost
- 9:09game seven at home, twenty twenty one lost Game seven at home, and
- 9:13we of course know that in twenty twenty three could have sealed the deal he
- 9:20lost that it blew that three to two lead at the Wells Fargo Center as
- 9:24well. So that's just to add a little bit more context to doc Rivers
- 9:30playoff in postseason resume as we're moving forward here. Interesting how my co host
- 9:35Lenn was texting some of us on our text thread and he asked the question,
- 9:41and it's really interesting to think about after this particular awful loss he asked.
- 9:46He said, a good debate topic, guys worse sixers move faults over
- 9:52Tatum or Simmons to bias, Brett Brown over Jimmy Butler. Interestingly enough,
- 9:58we had one of our dedicated listeners shoot us off some listener feedback this past
- 10:03week about this, you know, missing Jimmy Buckets. I don't know,
- 10:07I don't know. What are your thoughts out there? I'd love to hear
- 10:11from you. Do you think that Markel Foltz over Jason Tatum was worse than
- 10:18this organization keeping Ben Simmons to bias, Harris Brett Brown over Jimmy Butler.
- 10:24Our listener Francis this past week he said he missed Jimmy Buckets missed him,
- 10:28we would have had multiple championships. Of course, we don't know that.
- 10:31We aren't sure how that would have gone hindsight, Yes, is certainly twenty
- 10:37twenty. But I'd love to know what you're thinking about. I'd love to
- 10:39read your email on our regular show and respond to it. But the questions
- 10:43are going to persist about what to do with this team. The questions are
- 10:48going to persist. How do they continue to move forward even though we have
- 10:52loved him, even though the good has certainly outweighed the negative. But should
- 10:58the Sixers explore trading Joel Embiid, Because like, unless you want to give
- 11:03James Harden a max contract, you know, you are stuck with no meaningful
- 11:07way really to improve the roster. You know, you get a huge,
- 11:13huge hall of assets for Joel Embiid, You'll let James Harden walk, You
- 11:18trade Tobias Harris, you fire Doc Rivers starting over from the beginning. Does
- 11:24that happen the most extreme case, that is the most extreme case, or
- 11:28do you just fire Doc Rivers and kind of just try to run it back
- 11:31with this crew? I don't know, do you honestly think a different coach
- 11:35is going to produce a different result. I remember the Philadelphia seventy six ers
- 11:41tweeting out earlier this year that it's going to be a different season with a
- 11:45picture of James Harden. That was a Twitter post, and it wasn't.
- 11:50It wasn't different. It was a lot of the same stuff that we have
- 11:52been seeing, missing pieces at times during the regular season and especially during the
- 11:58postseason, and things not coming together, things not jelling, certain aspects of
- 12:03leadership of this team faltering. I absolutely love the Sixers, and I love
- 12:09Joel Embiid. I love what this team has meant to this city over the
- 12:13years. But my gosh, in the Sixers four losses to the Celtics,
- 12:18James Harden was a combined twelve or fifty five twenty one point eight percent from
- 12:24the field. I mean, this is part for the course for him,
- 12:28right, This is part for the course in terms of the playoffs during his
- 12:31career. They cannot, under any circumstances give him a max contract, let
- 12:37him leave the city of Philadelphia. It didn't work. It didn't work by
- 12:43James Harden. See you later appreciate some of those efforts that you did give
- 12:48us, but you didn't get us to where we needed yet again the Philadelphia
- 12:52seventy sixers not being able to get out of the Eastern Conference semifinals. So
- 12:58what happens? What happens with this team? Folks would love to hear from
- 13:03you, really. I mean, there's a few different avenues that they can
- 13:05go in again, aside from running it back with a different coach, Aside
- 13:09from the talk of trading Joel Embiid, trading Tobias Harris, you know,
- 13:13letting James Harden walk. Can they do to post or can they figure out
- 13:18a way to bring potential bench pieces in that could help this team a little
- 13:24bit more. I mean, in this game, would you get seventeen points
- 13:26out of the bench? And that was actually not that bad considering how the
- 13:31bench has played during this postseason. We've had some horrible bench numbers. Of
- 13:37course, my gosh, the supporting cast niang with a terrible foul in this
- 13:45game when he's hanging on a Celtics leg while he's sitting on the bench.
- 13:50What are you doing, man, what are you doing costing your team in
- 13:54this moment, in this particular moment to make a dumbass decision and move like
- 14:01that. The team definitely needs a new sort of direction. What is that
- 14:07direction going to be? I do want Joel Embi to be here. I
- 14:11do, and I'm not going to make any excuses with his knee, but
- 14:15yes, I mean that could that have been a prevalent aspect of why he
- 14:18didn't perform the way that we have been used to seeing him perform. Oh,
- 14:22by the way, he's the MVP of the league, and I know
- 14:24reading on Twitter folks saying you know what, that shouldn't mean as much.
- 14:28Yeah, I get it, it shouldn't mean as much, but guess what
- 14:31it does. It does, and it stinks when the MVP does not show
- 14:37up for a moment like this. I still love the guy, I'd still
- 14:41love him in Philadelphia, but in terms of what this team needs to do
- 14:46to get itself over this playoff hump, my gosh, this semifinals hump?
- 14:54Is he a part of that? I want him to be, but I'm
- 14:58not sure if it's possible. I don't know if it's possible. Let us
- 15:03know what you're thinking, Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com. Love to
- 15:07read your email here on the show. I'd love to get some responses about
- 15:11this. I want to talk about this. I know Eric probably well,
- 15:15Eric doesn't want to talk about this. To be honest with you, I
- 15:16asked him if he wanted to jump on. He's like, now, not
- 15:20really. Here's disgusted. Sixers Nation is disgusted. I know Lens disgusted.
- 15:26The text message is going back and forth. This team was not just utterly
- 15:31disappointing, but they were embarrassing. They embarrass themselves. It's embarrassing to be
- 15:37a part of this fan base right now at this particular moment here on May
- 15:41fourteenth, twenty twenty three, what's twenty twenty four that season gonna look like?
- 15:50What's what type of head coach is going to be now brought in to
- 15:52help provide some leadership to some very talented gentlemen who are who were wanting to
- 15:58get to that next level? What does it all look like? We're gonna
- 16:02be talking about it more on this podcast show, of course. So very
- 16:06bitter, so upset, so disappointed, so many of us just pissed off
- 16:11with how this went. Do you remember Eric from a couple of months ago
- 16:15saying, I get the feeling that this could happen again. And I kind
- 16:18of was thinking to myself back then, you know what, I don't know.
- 16:22They had a pretty good March. If you remember, March regular season
- 16:26schedule was supposed to be brutal, and they got through it. They got
- 16:30through it. It's because you had an MVP. You had an MVP caliber
- 16:36style player who helped them get through that. And I thought I'd be able
- 16:41to transfer over to this postseason man, the semi final round. Man,
- 16:48they're Achilles heel. Well, I don't know what. I don't know what
- 16:51more to say right now. I feel like I'm just talking pontificating in front
- 16:56of this microphone. It's so upsetting to know the talent that is on this
- 17:02team, but the talent just wasn't able to get it done. Sometimes in
- 17:06sports you need more than talent. Sometimes in sports you need, as I
- 17:11have mentioned a couple of times on this podcast already, you need to meet
- 17:15the moment. And if you don't, what does that mean? What if
- 17:19it means if you can't meet the moment? You know, I feel like
- 17:23Joel Embiade. It joins James Harden and Doc Rivers and this pantheon of choke
- 17:30artists. Now, I don't want that to be Embead's legacy. You know,
- 17:37he just he did not look great. Of course in this Game seven.
- 17:41They came up small when it mattered most. And they're never going to
- 17:45live this down. They're never going to live this down. And I hate
- 17:49to say it, but sometimes I think we have enough of a sample size
- 17:55to suggest that certain elements of this team might never be what we need them
- 18:02to be in the playoffs. You know, as brilliant as Joel Ebid maybe
- 18:08during the regular season, we just haven't seen it translate over into this postseason.
- 18:14It's so so incredibly disappointing. So I'm gonna end things there again.
- 18:22We'd love to hear from you. I need some emails people, I need
- 18:26some back and forth about where this team is going to go in the future.
- 18:30I want to hear from you. Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com.
