- 0:59Speaker 1: I mean, this is what Pete, you know, you the
- 1:02Speaker 1: the student athletes have worked for months, right they live
- 1:06Speaker 1: in the weight room, they live on the practice field, football, volleyball,
- 1:10Speaker 1: softball and now they get to play somebody else.
- 1:13Speaker 2: We all remember that.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Remember when you had to play each other for just
- 1:17Speaker 1: dozens and dozens of practices Barrett, and then you got
- 1:19Speaker 1: to go play Prep or JA or Tri County or
- 1:24Speaker 1: whoever it was. And then it was like, Okay, now
- 1:26Speaker 1: I'm fired up. I get to play, I get to
- 1:27Speaker 1: put the game day jersey on.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's it's you know, you get to the
- 1:31Speaker 4: point where and previous coaching experience plus playing you get
- 1:35Speaker 4: to the point where it's it you're you're tired of
- 1:38Speaker 4: of heating and and competing against your own teammates.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I mean, it's time to go, uh see what we're
- 1:45Speaker 3: all about.
- 1:45Speaker 4: It's time to go see what your team's all about,
- 1:47Speaker 4: how how you're built and and week ones the great
- 1:51Speaker 4: opportunity for growth. And so we've got a lot of
- 1:53Speaker 4: games this Friday night, uh to kick off our season
- 1:56Speaker 4: and what we call Week zero, and it's gonna be
- 1:59Speaker 4: it's gonna be exciting to see what the outcomes are
- 2:01Speaker 4: in some different matchups. But yeah, I know the I
- 2:03Speaker 4: know the coaches and the players and for particular schools
- 2:07Speaker 4: that we play in this this week, are very excited
- 2:10Speaker 4: to get back on the field.
- 2:11Speaker 1: We're visiting with Barrett Donahan Ross Haley on ESPN one
- 2:15Speaker 1: oh five nine the Zone M S AI S dot
- 2:20Speaker 1: Org m A I S.
- 2:21Speaker 2: And uh, they're getting everything kicked off.

- 2:28Speaker 1: volleyball among other sports rolling.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Now, how long have you been with the m A.
- 2:34Speaker 4: S Sparrett, Around eighteen months as the executive director.
- 2:38Speaker 3: I've transitioned from.
- 2:39Speaker 4: The head of school position at Pillow Academy in Greenwood
- 2:42Speaker 4: before I took this position, and it's been it's been
- 2:45Speaker 4: a very we We've got our challenges in the association
- 2:49Speaker 4: like everyone does and every aspect of business and uh,
- 2:54Speaker 4: you know what they do. But it's been a very
- 2:57Speaker 4: rewarding experience and I'm I'm really enjoying my position and
- 3:00Speaker 4: really grateful to have Ross Haley come join us as
- 3:03Speaker 4: our chief operating officer for athletics as we move forward
- 3:06Speaker 4: and working on marketing initiatives and different things that we
- 3:11Speaker 4: have just maybe not focused on enough in the past
- 3:14Speaker 4: to grow our brand sure, and so we're excited about
- 3:17Speaker 4: that as we continue to try to grow our brand.
- 3:19Speaker 3: But no, eighteen months on the job, and I'm still here.
- 3:22Speaker 4: And it's a lot of fun.
- 3:24Speaker 3: It's a lot of fun interacting.
- 3:26Speaker 4: With the heads of schools, the leaders of the schools, to.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Be a part of that every day.
- 3:31Speaker 4: And you know, we're just we're blessed to be in
- 3:35Speaker 4: a position where we are in the MS right now,
- 3:37Speaker 4: where we have one hundred and thirty six schools across
- 3:39Speaker 4: four states.
- 3:40Speaker 2: And one hundred and thirty six schools.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Yeah, one hundred and thirty six schools across four states,
- 3:44Speaker 4: and you know, a large population based in Louisiana that
- 3:48Speaker 4: compete in our league, and a couple in Tennessee and
- 3:52Speaker 4: a few in Arkansas.
- 3:53Speaker 3: And that's awesome.
- 3:54Speaker 4: So anyway, we're blessed and excited about everything that's happening
- 3:58Speaker 4: right now.
- 3:58Speaker 1: And you've never had better at athletes are deeper rosters
- 4:02Speaker 1: all around the state states. I mean, this m AIS
- 4:06Speaker 1: is loaded with big time athletes men's and women's sports.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you know, I think that go.
- 4:13Speaker 2: To Major League Baseball SEC G five, you name it.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean you've guys, I mean you've I mean,
- 4:18Speaker 4: let's just take I mean Jackson Prepp for example. I
- 4:22Speaker 4: mean they've got four arm sorry, three former players uh
- 4:27Speaker 4: on MLB rosters right now, two on the starting yeah, starting, yeah,
- 4:32Speaker 4: And I mean and that's crazy, right, And we were
- 4:35Speaker 4: talking about that the other day in the office, like
- 4:37Speaker 4: we need we've got to research that to figure out
- 4:40Speaker 4: does that exist anywhere else? Like does any other high
- 4:43Speaker 4: school in the country have three Major League Baseball players on?
- 4:48Speaker 2: Probably not?
- 4:49Speaker 1: Jake Mingham, Connor Griffin, and Will Warren. Will's with the Yankees.
- 4:53Speaker 1: We're gonna have him on next week, Connor and Mangam
- 4:56Speaker 1: who Barrett's talking about, or with the Pirates. And you
- 4:58Speaker 1: got guys moving up in minor league baseball. I mean
- 5:02Speaker 1: you that's but you're right, one school three players active, starting,
- 5:07Speaker 1: win healthy in MLB. Yeah, two hundred plus mel remarkable,
- 5:13Speaker 1: absolutely remarkable.
- 5:14Speaker 4: And then then you've got the Brewers who have the
- 5:17Speaker 4: best record in baseball and they got to start in
- 5:19Speaker 4: sport style from Magnella High souper proud.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I mean, that's that really is incredible, all right, And
- 5:26Speaker 1: I'm glad you brought that up because I didn't realize that.
- 5:28Speaker 1: And I should have Barrett Donahoe on the Out of
- 5:31Speaker 1: Bounds Show, Ross Haley. So I'm going to bring Ross
- 5:33Speaker 1: here in here for a second Ross was.
- 5:36Speaker 2: With how long were you at mra A twenty eight years?
- 5:40Speaker 1: Twenty eight years? And now you've been with m AI
- 5:43Speaker 1: S for two months?
- 5:44Speaker 3: Two months?
- 5:45Speaker 2: Okay, and congratulations, thank you.
- 5:48Speaker 5: It's been a great it's been a great uh been
- 5:50Speaker 5: a great opportunity. I'm excited about it.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Yeah, y'all are going to make a good team. Y'all
- 5:54Speaker 2: are on the same page.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And you know, I've met with y'all and I'm excited
- 5:59Speaker 1: about well, you know, the mojo and the energy and
- 6:03Speaker 1: the excitement around m A I as I know you
- 6:05Speaker 1: are too.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Absolutely month and a half Monday, month and a half.
- 6:10Speaker 4: It's just finmal vacation.
- 6:11Speaker 3: That's right.
- 6:11Speaker 1: It's great, that's right, and half so does so. Football
- 6:15Speaker 1: starts this Friday or next Friday.
- 6:17Speaker 4: We had some jamborees, uh this past week and some
- 6:21Speaker 4: scrimmages this past week.
- 6:23Speaker 3: We have week zero Friday night. Okay.
- 6:26Speaker 4: We we have some good matchups Friday night and and
- 6:29Speaker 4: some some teams that are eager to get on the field.
- 6:32Speaker 4: I don't know the specific number of games, uh, Ross
- 6:36Speaker 4: you may, but the you know it's you know, you
- 6:40Speaker 4: got I think Lamar Traveling Simpson.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Okay, you've got they'll get after it.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Yeah, Jackson Academy traveling the league. You've got some really
- 6:48Speaker 4: good eight man matchups, and we have an eight man
- 6:49Speaker 4: league which is which is really thriving right now, and
- 6:52Speaker 4: it's it's it's been exciting to watch those schools get
- 6:55Speaker 4: behind those that that that brand of football and and
- 6:59Speaker 4: what they that site that brings to those communities.
- 7:01Speaker 3: It's really been nice to watch over the years.
- 7:04Speaker 4: And and and so we've got some really good eight
- 7:06Speaker 4: man matchups this week as well.
- 7:07Speaker 3: So and and I just named a couple of games.
- 7:10Speaker 4: They're there are numerous other games are going to be
- 7:13Speaker 4: the great matchups.
- 7:15Speaker 1: But and then everybody gets fired off on the twenty
- 7:19Speaker 1: twenty first, So we'll have a bunch of games this
- 7:22Speaker 1: Friday night and then everybody gets rolling next Friday.
- 7:26Speaker 2: That's right, which is exciting.
- 7:28Speaker 1: M R A usually plays in that week zero week,
- 7:30Speaker 1: but they're they're not playing I think because I had
- 7:33Speaker 1: I had Weaver on two days ago, I think, and
- 7:36Speaker 1: they're playing Ravenwood or somebody.
- 7:39Speaker 5: They travel to Nashville.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, all right, Barrett Donahoe and Ross Haley, m A.
- 7:47Speaker 1: I S on the Out of Bounds Show.
- 7:50Speaker 2: M S. A I S dot org.
- 7:53Speaker 1: So you've got four classifications Barrett, right now, Yes, that's correct, Okay.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Four A, three A, two A one A and I
- 8:03Speaker 4: think fourteen schools in the top classification. Then it tears
- 8:06Speaker 4: down from there from for athletic purposes before classifications and
- 8:11Speaker 4: and you know, we're in a realignment year this year,
- 8:15Speaker 4: so we'll be, you know, a typical realignment year. We've
- 8:18Speaker 4: gone through some challenges over the last two years with
- 8:21Speaker 4: the alignment, and I think the people that serve on
- 8:23Speaker 4: our Athletic Commission would laugh if they heard me say that.
- 8:26Speaker 3: They would probably call it more than challenges. But we
- 8:29Speaker 3: but we are.
- 8:30Speaker 4: We're in a typical realignment cycle year this year, and
- 8:33Speaker 4: so we'll start those conversations in October about what we
- 8:37Speaker 4: look like moving forward. But I don't see a lot
- 8:39Speaker 4: of changes coming up. I think that we're kind of
- 8:42Speaker 4: kind of feeling like we were in a good place
- 8:44Speaker 4: right now with the classifications that we have.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I know y'all put a lot of work in it
- 8:48Speaker 1: the last couple of years. That's an understatement, a lot
- 8:52Speaker 1: of hours.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that's yes.
- 8:54Speaker 1: We did so four classifications four A, three A, two
- 8:59Speaker 1: A one A with M Ai is correct, Okay, championships
- 9:03Speaker 1: all over and sports from from golf to football and
- 9:08Speaker 1: from volleyball to to basketball.
- 9:10Speaker 4: Absolutely, and and you know, like right now, I mean
- 9:13Speaker 4: we've got you know, softball and volleyball. Volleyball has really
- 9:18Speaker 4: taken a hold in our league and is growing rapidly,
- 9:23Speaker 4: and it is it's it's a lot of fun to watch.
- 9:25Speaker 3: It's a sport that that.
- 9:28Speaker 4: I think of so many people have in our state
- 9:33Speaker 4: alone have started to embrace and so we're we're excited
- 9:37Speaker 4: about what's happening there. And then softball, I mean, we
- 9:39Speaker 4: just have tremendous girls softway athletes and really good teams
- 9:43Speaker 4: that can go compete against anybody.
- 9:45Speaker 1: So the growth in softball has been going on for
- 9:47Speaker 1: a while now and it's red hot. You're you're right
- 9:50Speaker 1: on volleyball, it's I think there's a lot more runway
- 9:55Speaker 1: and growth there as far as around here in this state.
- 9:59Speaker 1: I mean, we had Todd Sandridge on and his daughter
- 10:02Speaker 1: played at m RA and now she's playing at Jones.
- 10:05Speaker 1: And I mean I've had friends whose daughters have played
- 10:09Speaker 1: volleyball and.
- 10:10Speaker 2: It's it's action packed, you know what I'm saying.
- 10:14Speaker 1: So people get in and you're locked in and it's
- 10:18Speaker 1: not long.
- 10:18Speaker 2: I mean, it's great. So that's what people want this
- 10:20Speaker 2: day and age.
- 10:21Speaker 3: You know.
- 10:21Speaker 5: Another another part of volleyball growing right now is it
- 10:25Speaker 5: grew through the high schools. And because it grew through
- 10:28Speaker 5: the high schools, now the Jucos have started offering.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Me that's a good point.
- 10:32Speaker 5: There are there's so many there's so many more Jucos
- 10:34Speaker 5: offering volleyball now than there were three years ago. And
- 10:38Speaker 5: that's just going to continue to help volleyball grow across
- 10:41Speaker 5: our state when there's that many more opportunities for him
- 10:43Speaker 5: to play, for girls to play at the at the
- 10:46Speaker 5: next level. Yeah, the Jucos, the Jucos embracing volleyball is
- 10:50Speaker 5: going to increase the high school participation also.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Which is great. More scholarships, more opportunities. Absolutely, But what
- 10:57Speaker 2: you said, I think is real.
- 10:59Speaker 3: I mean it's so.
- 10:59Speaker 4: Fast, yeah, and and and and that just keeps everything
- 11:03Speaker 4: moving and and it's the girls are energetic.
- 11:06Speaker 3: On the court and it's I don't know, it's fun
- 11:08Speaker 3: to want.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Coaching's gotten better, Development's gotten better from elementary in the
- 11:12Speaker 1: junior high, which is feeding what y'all are talking about
- 11:15Speaker 1: into high school.
- 11:15Speaker 2: And post high school.
- 11:17Speaker 1: So softball and and let me get this right, so
- 11:20Speaker 1: football is full speed ahead. Y'all have got softball full
- 11:25Speaker 1: speed ahead, volleyball, cross country. So you've got a lot
- 11:29Speaker 1: of sports that are already rolling big time and and
- 11:33Speaker 1: either competing or about to compete.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Right. I have a h.
- 11:36Speaker 5: We'll have a spirit competition for our cheerleaders and dancers
- 11:39Speaker 5: coming up September ninth.
- 11:40Speaker 3: We have a h.
- 11:41Speaker 5: We have a state swim meet coming up also nice. So, uh,
- 11:44Speaker 5: there's you know, the the swim is mostly still club
- 11:48Speaker 5: swimming across across our league, but there are we have
- 11:51Speaker 5: we have several schools that have regular season swim meets also,
- 11:54Speaker 5: so yeah, it's you know, it's it's out there and
- 11:56Speaker 5: there's a there's a nice there's a nice group of
- 11:59Speaker 5: kids that are out there swimming all the time, swimming
- 12:01Speaker 5: for clubs and swimming for their schools during the regular season.
- 12:03Speaker 5: And then the state swim meet that comes up out
- 12:07Speaker 5: at grit On Lakeland.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Yes, great place, grit Fitness and Training.
- 12:11Speaker 5: Thank you, Ross, I can I can help you throw
- 12:14Speaker 5: some sponsors into sometimes.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Yeah, Barrett Donaho and Ross Haley, m A I S
- 12:19Speaker 1: M s AI S dot org. The school year is
- 12:23Speaker 1: underway and the athletic calendar has started, and everybody's chomping
- 12:28Speaker 1: at the bit with high school football. As Barrett mentioned,
- 12:31Speaker 1: we're not but about forty eight hours away from week
- 12:34Speaker 1: zero where they're going to have a bunch of games
- 12:36Speaker 1: going on around the state or states that encompass this
- 12:42Speaker 1: great organization. And then next week everybody's playing game on
- 12:47Speaker 1: and then before we know it, we're going to have
- 12:48Speaker 1: the j preps and the MRA Heartfields and the it's
- 12:53Speaker 1: going to be crazy. Or like Barrett said, you got
- 12:55Speaker 1: Lamar and Simpson right out of the gate. You know
- 12:57Speaker 1: they want to get after each other and they know
- 12:59Speaker 1: how to play football there Obviously, Jacob Land left m
- 13:03Speaker 1: R A to go, I mean left Lamar to go
- 13:05Speaker 1: to m R A. And Simpson's been playing great football
- 13:08Speaker 1: for a long time down on Highway forty nine South.
- 13:12Speaker 1: So that'll be uh, how about a chomping of the
- 13:15Speaker 1: bit game this Friday night between Lamar and Simpson ms
- 13:20Speaker 1: AI S dot org ross.
- 13:22Speaker 2: How weird will it be?
- 13:24Speaker 1: So when Ricky Black or Richard Dewiz step down or
- 13:26Speaker 1: retire legendary coaches and in this association, you know, I
- 13:32Speaker 1: mean it's crazy. It's going to be wild not to
- 13:34Speaker 1: see coach Dewise out there this year, just like it
- 13:38Speaker 1: was crazy not to see coach Black after the run
- 13:40Speaker 1: that he made at Jackson Prepp. Yeah, our coach Sojourner
- 13:44Speaker 1: at JA.
- 13:45Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 13:46Speaker 2: I mean you're talking about Hall of Famers.
- 13:48Speaker 5: Yeah, it's uh, you know, we we've we've had lots
- 13:51Speaker 5: of uh. I mean, I think people across I think
- 13:54Speaker 5: I think people across our state understand the level of
- 13:57Speaker 5: coaching that the m a i s has and some
- 14:00Speaker 5: of those you know, some of those folks that have
- 14:02Speaker 5: been legendary coaches that have been at for so long.
- 14:03Speaker 5: But we have so many great young coaches across our association.
- 14:06Speaker 5: You mentioned Jacob and in the world of football, and uh,
- 14:09Speaker 5: you know, there's there's just there's a lot of great
- 14:11Speaker 5: coaches across our association. Harper Huddle's going to do a
- 14:14Speaker 5: great job replacing coach to Eist there.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Uh, those are.
- 14:17Speaker 2: A big shoot.
- 14:18Speaker 1: We talked about Kaylin de Boor replacing Nick Saban, Harper
- 14:23Speaker 1: Hudnell's replacing Richard Deuis.
- 14:25Speaker 5: Yeah, and you know, just the the entire if you
- 14:29Speaker 5: look at the entire metro area of coaches, they're all
- 14:32Speaker 5: so much younger than, uh than they used to be.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Really, yeah, you've got a youth movement.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:36Speaker 5: Ten you know, ten years ago you still had you
- 14:38Speaker 5: still had Bill Ball coaching, and you had uh, you know,
- 14:41Speaker 5: coach Dewish, you had Tim Wise coaching at Jackson Prepp.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Just an older, an older group of folks. And now
- 14:47Speaker 5: you look up and uh, I think Chris Goodman in
- 14:49Speaker 5: the Metro area is probably the oldest one, and he's
- 14:51Speaker 5: he's probably only thirty three or thirty four years old.
- 14:54Speaker 2: So golly, who knew that Herbert's the senior guy? Are
- 14:58Speaker 2: some of those? I mean, because that's a great point.
- 15:00Speaker 1: You had Ricky Black, Jan Sojourner, Bill Ball, Richard Deuiz,
- 15:04Speaker 1: Joey Hawkins, all these people that had been coaching and
- 15:08Speaker 1: very successful for a long time, among others.
- 15:11Speaker 2: You got y'all got to this is exciting. Y'all got
- 15:14Speaker 2: a youth movement going on here. I didn't even thought
- 15:16Speaker 2: about that within the m A.
- 15:17Speaker 3: I s yeah, and.
- 15:19Speaker 4: I think that, uh, it goes to show that the
- 15:22Speaker 4: caliber of young coaches in our association is elite.
- 15:27Speaker 3: I mean, it really is.
- 15:28Speaker 4: I mean, these you know, you watch you watch these
- 15:31Speaker 4: young coaches on the sidelines, on the basketball court, wherever
- 15:36Speaker 4: they are, and whatever sport, and you just see that
- 15:39Speaker 4: they're going to take the place of that generation that
- 15:41Speaker 4: is retiring and moving on and had had really starved
- 15:46Speaker 4: the m A I s in a tremendous capacity of
- 15:49Speaker 4: doubt and and and really created what we are today,
- 15:53Speaker 4: right and put us helped us land in the map
- 15:56Speaker 4: of on the map of success and athletics and so so.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Yeah, the youth, I haven't really thought of it that way.
- 16:03Speaker 3: It's a great way to put it.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Yeah, but and it's pretty awesome and excited. I mean,
- 16:07Speaker 1: you love what those men and women laid the groundwork, right,
- 16:11Speaker 1: and now you've got this youth movement in m ais.
- 16:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to give Chuck Box a hard time.
- 16:17Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to tell him. I'm going to text
- 16:19Speaker 1: him after the show and let hey, I just thought
- 16:21Speaker 1: of this with Barrett and Ross. You're you're one of
- 16:23Speaker 1: the old guys. I mean, Jackson Academy hired a guy
- 16:27Speaker 1: off the Texas Longhorn staff. How awesome is that.
- 16:30Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm glad to have him back in this up too.
- 16:33Speaker 4: I mean, it'll be it's gonna be really unique to
- 16:36Speaker 4: see how that dynamic plays out there. I think he's,
- 16:40Speaker 4: of course everybody.
- 16:41Speaker 3: Knows he's a phenomenal coach, so really really excited to
- 16:44Speaker 3: have it back in the association.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Well, you know this, when you have coaches who elevate
- 16:47Speaker 1: their program, it makes the others, It makes the rivals
- 16:50Speaker 1: and the competitors get their act together, right absolutely, I
- 16:54Speaker 1: mean that's what you want, and you know, prep One forever,
- 16:58Speaker 1: and then others started jumping on board JA, m R Heartfield,
- 17:03Speaker 1: you know, Park Laye, Pillar, The list goes on and on,
- 17:06Speaker 1: and now it's almost like the portal with SEC. I
- 17:12Speaker 1: mean there's been a leveling of the playing field, which
- 17:14Speaker 1: is very you don't ever know who's gonna win it now,
- 17:17Speaker 1: especially in this metro area. Could be Heartfield, could be
- 17:19Speaker 1: m ra A, could be Prepped, could be JA. I
- 17:22Speaker 1: think that's exciting for you guys, especially knowing that they're
- 17:25Speaker 1: going to play in the regular season and who knows
- 17:27Speaker 1: who's going to tie up in the postseason in the playoffs.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Barrett Donahue and Ross Haley m Ai S joining us

- 18:16Speaker 2: for you.
- 18:16Speaker 4: And Ross, Yeah, we were sitting there last year at
- 18:20Speaker 4: the for a football championship game at Mississippi College Hartfield
- 18:25Speaker 4: and Jackson Academy.
- 18:27Speaker 3: It was.
- 18:30Speaker 4: I'm not going to say it was a record crowd
- 18:31Speaker 4: for our for our largest classification. I would, I don't
- 18:34Speaker 4: have the numbers to back that up, but it was
- 18:37Speaker 4: a packed house in Missippian I mean. And and the
- 18:41Speaker 4: people that are coming to watch the athletes in our
- 18:44Speaker 4: association today is more than ever before, you know, And
- 18:48Speaker 4: and so yeah, it's it's it's awesome. We look forward
- 18:52Speaker 4: to Friday nights and watching you know, and of course
- 18:54Speaker 4: it's a it's a lot of that comes back to
