Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: But right now we know that the AAENTT is concerned
- 0:03Speaker 1: they're a decrease the fuel terminal gate price isn't being
- 0:07Speaker 1: passed on to consumers at the retail pump. So while
- 0:11Speaker 1: unletted and detail retail prices have stayed the same, indow
- 0:15Speaker 1: and that gap between those prices and the fuel's purchase
- 0:18Speaker 1: price has widened. Now we obviously fairly often take a
- 0:22Speaker 1: look at those terminal gate prices and indeed the price
- 0:26Speaker 1: at the bowser and it is something that I've been
- 0:28Speaker 1: keeping an eye on. Now joining us on the line
- 0:30Speaker 1: to talk more about it is the AANT CEO, Anthony Hill,
- 0:34Speaker 1: Good morning to you.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Good morning Katie Anthony.
- 0:38Speaker 1: What kind of gaps are we talking about here in
- 0:40Speaker 1: terms of what consumers are paying at the pump compared
- 0:43Speaker 1: to that terminal gate price.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Yes, well we've seen traditionally, I'll say over the last
- 0:49Speaker 2: couple of years it's averaged around about seven to eight
- 0:53Speaker 2: per cent, it's the margin. And throughout November we saw
- 0:58Speaker 2: that peak up to who are nearly twenty four twenty
- 1:04Speaker 2: four cents there and that was at the beginning of December.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Has come down slightly to eighteen point five, but certainly
- 1:12Speaker 2: nowhere knew where it traditionally has been for the last
- 1:15Speaker 2: couple of years.
- 1:16Speaker 1: And so why is that? I mean, have we got
- 1:18Speaker 1: a situation here where retailers are just thinking that they're
- 1:21Speaker 1: going to get away with that?
- 1:24Speaker 2: Well, I can tell you in Catherine, Catherine was that
- 1:28Speaker 2: period was about a dollar ninety eight for unleaved and
- 1:33Speaker 2: therefore stropped by fifteen since at the beginning of December
- 1:37Speaker 2: in Katherine, but we have seen no movement here in
- 1:39Speaker 2: Darwin has been around that one sixty nine point five
- 1:42Speaker 2: one sixty nine point nine consistently really since late October.
- 1:48Speaker 1: How are they able to get away with it? Anthony?
- 1:50Speaker 1: You know, you and I I know I've spoken about
- 1:53Speaker 1: this before where previously we've seen them sort of being
- 1:56Speaker 1: quite fair. I think you'd have to say, but at
- 1:58Speaker 1: the moment, you know, like you said that average around
- 2:01Speaker 1: eight cents, I think you said, and now it's at
- 2:03Speaker 1: about eighteen point five, Like, how are they able to
- 2:06Speaker 1: get away with it?
- 2:08Speaker 2: Well, I think there's by now we should have seen
- 2:10Speaker 2: fuel that was purchased, you know, when the term will
- 2:12Speaker 2: Gay price did go up a bit flow through, So
- 2:16Speaker 2: that's probably a question you need to ask them. Yeahdie
- 2:19Speaker 2: I think there's why there isn't any movement, but you know,
- 2:23Speaker 2: monitoring it, it's just been flatlined since late October, as
- 2:26Speaker 2: I've said, and it's probably you know, we would have
- 2:28Speaker 2: expected by now that we would have seen some relief
- 2:30Speaker 2: at the pump.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And I know that you are calling for a reduction
- 2:34Speaker 1: in that gap. Ultimately it would mean a reduction in
- 2:37Speaker 1: fuel costs. Is this going to make any difference in
- 2:40Speaker 1: what the retailers choose to do coming into Christmas? Do
- 2:43Speaker 1: you think that they're going to listen?
- 2:45Speaker 2: Oh, look, I think given the time of year, it's
- 2:50Speaker 2: I don't think so. I don't think so. I don't
- 2:52Speaker 2: think we're going to be seeing relief until early in
- 2:54Speaker 2: the new year of court to this peak period for
- 2:56Speaker 2: people driving. And at the moment there's the margin, Yeah,
- 3:02Speaker 2: it's a lot higher than where it should be. So
- 3:04Speaker 2: it's from from our point of view, particularly with the
- 3:08Speaker 2: terminal gate price. You know, we saw the terminal gate
- 3:10Speaker 2: price come down from like a dollar sixty one down
- 3:14Speaker 2: more recently to a dollar forty five, so that really
- 3:18Speaker 2: should have flowed through.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I know that you said that, you know, they probably
- 3:22Speaker 1: won't change what they're doing, but what should they be
- 3:25Speaker 1: doing here, should they actually be taking it back down
- 3:28Speaker 1: to that average of eight sense?
- 3:31Speaker 2: Well, I think so. Again, if you look for the
- 3:33Speaker 2: last two years, that that's where it's at. So they've
- 3:35Speaker 2: been able to operate at that level for the last
- 3:38Speaker 2: two years, and this spike is yes, you know, we
- 3:42Speaker 2: did see a terminal gate prists go up slightly in
- 3:45Speaker 2: kind of mid October, but it has come back down,
- 3:48Speaker 2: so there's there's really no excuse for it. So we
- 3:52Speaker 2: are calling for it to be to be fair and
- 3:54Speaker 2: reasonable at a time when our motors are most likely
- 3:57Speaker 2: going to be on the road.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree with you. I think that you know,
- 4:01Speaker 1: we all understand that they are businesses and that businesses
- 4:04Speaker 1: need to make money, but you know, be fair, like,
- 4:07Speaker 1: be fair with the consumers and be fair with those
- 4:09Speaker 1: territories that are loyal to them.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Absolutely absolutely, Well the case they've seen it, we've seen
- 4:15Speaker 2: it dropping Catherine and by nearly fifteen cents so in
- 4:20Speaker 2: the last couple of weeks. So there's no reason why
- 4:22Speaker 2: it shouldn't be happening in Darwent either. Hey, Anthony, I.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Know there's been lots of discussions sort of nationally as well.
- 4:27Speaker 1: At the moment about this ad blue shortage. Is that
- 4:31Speaker 1: having much of an impact for us in the territory
- 4:33Speaker 1: right now?
- 4:35Speaker 2: Yeah, it's more than I've seen the trucking sector, So
- 4:39Speaker 2: you know, I have heard a lot about it, but
- 4:41Speaker 2: I'm probably not one to comment on it at this stage.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I yeah, that's sure of the effect it, that's all right.
- 4:49Speaker 1: I thought i'll ask while I've had you on the line,
- 4:51Speaker 1: But yeah, I don't know a huge amount about it either.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I know it's something that I've seen quite a bit
- 4:55Speaker 1: of reporting on, so I will make sure that we
- 4:57Speaker 1: try and have a bit further discussion about it point
- 5:00Speaker 1: throughout the coming weeks. I know that we've done a
- 5:03Speaker 1: bit of work online as well. Our news director Crystal
- 5:08Speaker 1: has done a quite an extensive sort of report about
- 5:10Speaker 1: it online, so we'll take a bit of a closer
- 5:12Speaker 1: look from that perspective. But I really appreciate your time
- 5:16Speaker 1: this morning. Thank you very much for having a chat
- 5:18Speaker 1: to us about these petrol prices, and I'll try my
- 5:21Speaker 1: best to keep the pressure on. I'm going to go
- 5:23Speaker 1: through those diesel and unleaded prices very shortly and see
- 5:26Speaker 1: what we might be able to do.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Thanks you support Chatie, Thank you and the road.
- 5:32Speaker 1: This Christmas absolutely thank you. Have a good Christmas, Anthony,
