- 0:00Take your Bibles, if you will,
- 0:01and open them to the book of Genesis.
- 0:19We have been continuing our study concerning worship,
- 0:24and we're going to be continuing that this evening.
- 0:30We're gonna jump back into the Old Testament.
- 0:32We spent a little bit of time,
- 0:33a couple of weeks in the New Testament.
- 0:35We're gonna spend a little bit more time in the Old Testament looking
- 0:39at some matters related to worship.
- 0:43And ~ then we'll deal with a few things.
- 0:47But as we get into that, we're actually going to begin with some time
- 0:51~ spent looking at some of the altars that
- 0:57are in Genesis.
- 0:59And then also ~ looking at some things related to God's sovereignty.
- 1:04But let's begin with a word of prayer and then we'll get into our study.
- 1:09Our gracious Father in Heaven,
- 1:12we come before you grateful for the day you've blessed us with,
- 1:15mindful of those who are ill,
- 1:19those who are struggling with physical maladies,
- 1:23~ those who are
- 1:25facing upcoming procedures and those who are trying to recover from
- 1:29~ diseases and and difficulties.
- 1:32Lord, we pray that your healing hand be upon them and that their health
- 1:37and that their abilities be retained back to their desired state.
- 1:41Lord, we pray that you be with those who are from this congregation that deal with
- 1:49chronic disease and and hardship.
- 1:52And Lord, we pray that you
- 1:53Help them as well. Lord, we pray that you be with this nation and this state.
- 1:59We pray that you be with this region,
- 2:02this city that we belong to. May we have open doors of opportunity.
- 2:07May the gospel have an influence throughout this area and throughout this country
- 2:13and throughout the world. May we always stand boldly for the truth.
- 2:18And Lord, may we be firm in standing.
- 2:22To say that we ought to worship you and you alone.
- 2:26Lord, we pray that you will forgive us when we sin and fall short of your glory.
- 2:31We pray that you will bless the work of our hands and the labor
- 2:34of this congregation and the opportunities that it has.
- 2:37And all of this we pray and ask in Jesus' name.
- 2:40Amen.
- 2:44As you get into the book of Genesis,
- 2:48you find in the beginning of chapter four,
- 2:51we've noticed this briefly, the events of Cain and Abel and the worship that
- 2:56is offered there. Cain will offer of the what?
- 3:05Fruit of the ground. Abel will offer what?
- 3:10All right, the firstborn of the flock.
- 3:12~ now, one point to make, we're not gonna spend a lot of time dwelling
- 3:16on that since we've already looked at it,
- 3:18but one point to be made ~ is you find in verse three
- 3:25of Genesis four, and in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought
- 3:29an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord.
- 3:34The one of the contrasts that we see in the text between
- 3:41What is stated about Abel's sacrifice and what is stated about Cain's
- 3:46is actually found in verse 4. So generically being stated,
- 3:50Cain offered of the fruit of the ground.
- 3:54But when you notice verse 4, Abel also brought of the firstborn
- 4:00of the flock and of their fat,
- 4:03and the Lord respected Abel and his offering.
- 4:07If you were to just examine the text.
- 4:09You would say, okay, well, we could look at the comparison or
- 4:12the contrast of offerings. Cain offered of the fruit of the ground.
- 4:17Abel offered of the f ~ of the flock.
- 4:22Cain, it doesn't state whether his was the first fruit of
- 4:28the ground or not. Abel, it specifically states that it
- 4:33was the firstborn of the flock.
- 4:37Track forward to the days of the Mosaic Law,
- 4:40and what does God require of the people?
- 4:47The first of everything. All right,
- 4:48turn to Exodus chapter twelve.
- 4:56Exodus chapter 12, as the Israelites
- 5:00are beginning to proceed or about to proceed out of the land of Egypt,
- 5:07there is the tenth and final plague,
- 5:11which happens in chapter 11, and it is the death of what?
- 5:14The firstborn. In chapter 12,
- 5:18you open up the text, and the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,
- 5:22saying,
- 5:23This month shall be your beginning of months,
- 5:25and it shall be the first month of the year to you.
- 5:28Speak to all the children of Israel,
- 5:30saying, On the tenth of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb,
- 5:34according to the house of his father,
- 5:36a lamb for a household. And if the household is too small for the lamb,
- 5:41let him and his neighbor take to his house,
- 5:44let's sorry, next to his house,
- 5:46take it according to the number of the persons.
- 5:48According to each man's need you shall make your count for the lamb.
- 5:52Your lamb shall be without blemish,
- 5:54a male of the first year, you may take it from the sheep or from the goats.
- 5:59Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month,
- 6:03then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight,
- 6:07and they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts,
- 6:10and on the lintels of the house where they eat it.
- 6:12And they shall eat the flesh on that night,
- 6:15roasted in fire, and unleavened bread,
- 6:17and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
- 6:19Do not eat it raw nor boiled with all at all with water,
- 6:24but roasted in fire, its head with its legs and its entrails.
- 6:28You shall let none of it remain until morning,
- 6:30and what remains of it until morning you shall burn with fire,
- 6:34and thus you shall eat it with your belt on your waist,
- 6:37your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand,
- 6:40so you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord's Passover.
- 6:46For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night,
- 6:49and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt,
- 6:52both man and beast, and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment.
- 6:56I am the Lord. Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where
- 7:03you are, and when I see the blood I will pass over you,
- 7:06and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
- 7:11So this day shall be to you a memorial.
- 7:14And you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord throughout all your generations.
- 7:18You shall keep it as a feast by everlasting ordinance.
- 7:21Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread.
- 7:23On the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses.
- 7:27For whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day,
- 7:31that person shall be cut off from Israel.
- 7:33On the first day there shall be a holy convocation.
- 7:36On the seventh day there shall be a holy convocation for you.
- 7:40No manner of work shall be done on them,
- 7:42but that which every one must ~ but that which everyone must eat,
- 7:47that only may be prepared for you.
- 7:49So you shall observe the feast of unleavened bread,
- 7:52for on this day I have brought your armies out of the land of Egypt.
- 7:56Therefore you shall observe this day throughout your generations
- 7:59as an everlasting ordinance. In the first month,
- 8:02on the fourteenth day of the month at evening,
- 8:05you shall eat unleavened bread until the twenty-first day of the month at evening.
- 8:10For seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses,
- 8:13since whoever eats whoever eats what is leavened,
- 8:17that same person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel,
- 8:20whether he is a stranger or a native of the land.
- 8:23You shall eat nothing leavened in all your dwellings,
- 8:26you shall eat unleavened bread.
- 8:28Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them,
- 8:33Pick out and take lambs of yourself ~ for yourselves according to your families,
- 8:37and kill the Passover lamb.
- 8:39And he gives them the instructions on what they're to do.
- 8:42And verse 29 and 30, you have the death of the firstborn.
- 8:47Okay? As God brings this plague upon Israel,
- 8:52God institutes the Passover.
- 8:56God creates the calendar for Israel all over again.
- 9:01Here's the beginning of your year.
- 9:03And in the beginning of your year,
- 9:05on the tenth day, you're going to do this.
- 9:08And on this, the 14th day, you're gonna do this.
- 9:10And on the 21st day, you're going to do this.
- 9:13But it in the very first year,
- 9:16the fundamental thing behind the Passover was
- 9:21the plague of the firstborn.
- 9:24You step over to chapter 13, and God is going
- 9:29to consecrate the firstborn.
- 9:32God is going to claim the firstborn of Israel.
- 9:38Forever. Notice chapter thirteen.
- 9:40Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
- 9:41Consecrate to me all the firstborn,
- 9:43whatever opens the womb from the children of Israel,
- 9:47both of man and beast, it is what?
- 9:50Mine. Mine.
- 9:54God is going to tell Israel, your firstborn child,
- 9:59it's mine. Your firstborn lamb is mine.
- 10:05Firstborn cow, it's mine. Your firstborn of everything.
- 10:10Ultimately, when you follow this through to the Mosaic ordinances,
- 10:16the firstborn of every field, the first fruits.
- 10:21Belong to the Lord. Matter of fact,
- 10:22there will be a feast of first fruits.
- 10:25God is going to tell Israel, the first of everything is mine.
- 10:31It's always interesting me when people in the religious world talk about tithing.
- 10:37They'll say, Well, God commanded a tithe.
- 10:40That is technically accurate in the Mosaic law,
- 10:45except it ignores the majority of what God commanded.
- 10:48Because God commanded
- 10:50The first. And God commanded a tenth.
- 10:54And God commanded special feasts.
- 10:57And God commanded other things.
- 10:59When you start adding it up, God God actually commanded about 25%
- 11:05of everything that came out of Israel.
- 11:07Okay? So when you start doing the math,
- 11:10like, no, ~ you just went with the easiest one to calculate because it's
- 11:15in the name. It's called a tenth,
- 11:16it's a tithe. But God commanded way more.
- 11:21than 10% when it comes to Israel.
- 11:23Now, when you look at this text,
- 11:26you find an interesting detail with Genesis 3 that what
- 11:31God respected in what Abel did is Abel offered
- 11:36the first thing.
- 11:40Abel, as he worships,
- 11:44will offer to God what comes first.
- 11:48And if he gives to God what comes first,
- 11:51what is Abel by a token of doing that saying about himself?
- 12:00That God comes first. Because generally speaking,
- 12:05you're going to give the thing that comes first to whoever matters most.
- 12:10So if you keep what is first and you give God what is last,
- 12:16then who's most important? You are.
- 12:20Because you gave to yourself first.
- 12:23It's one of the principles because we're.
- 12:27All of this discussion is not just to get a history of worship,
- 12:30it's to establish what are the principles that we worship by.
- 12:34Well, when you think about the offering that we give on the first day of the week,
- 12:40should we be setting aside our offering and setting aside what we offer
- 12:45to the Lord as the first thing or what's left over?
- 12:52I know when I present it that way,
- 12:54everybody says, well, the first thing.
- 12:55But do we actually do that? When we sit down and look at the money that comes into
- 13:02our lives, do we go, all right,
- 13:04here's the Lord's. Now I gotta make everything else work because
- 13:10the Lord's area is not going to get cut.
- 13:13Now, step over, if you will,
- 13:16to 2 Corinthians.
- 13:25Paul, as he is writing to the church at Corinth
- 13:33Is going to discuss this very idea in the discussion of what
- 13:39he will say concerning.
- 13:43The people in Macedonia, in that they not only give first to God,
- 13:49they give more than they could give to God.
- 13:54Second Corinthians chapter 8 and verse 1 Moreover,
- 13:57brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on churches of Macedonia,
- 14:01that in great trial of affliction and abundance of their joy,
- 14:06their deep poverty abounded in riches of their liberality.
- 14:09For I bear them witness that according to their ability.
- 14:13Yes, and beyond their ability,
- 14:16they were f freely willing, imploring us with much urgency that
- 14:20we should receive the gift and the fellowship of the ministering of the saints,
- 14:24not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord,
- 14:31and then to us by the will of God.
- 14:35Paul says as he's calling to mind what the Macedonian Christians have done,
- 14:39is he's writing this letter from Macedonia to the churches in Corinth.
- 14:43He's writing to them and says,
- 14:46Hey, I you need to know what the church at Macedonia did.
- 14:50First of all, you need to know their state.
- 14:52They're in deep poverty. As ~ as Jim McGuigan would say over in
- 14:59the book of Revelation, about one of the churches that's described as being poor
- 15:03in the book of Revelation.
- 15:05There's two words in the Greek for poor.
- 15:06There's the one who's poor, and then there's the people who are poor.
- 15:14They have nothing. They don't have a they don't have
- 15:20a simple lack. They are destitute.
- 15:24This idea is destitute. And yet Paul is in their presence,
- 15:30and Paul is telling them concerning the state of the churches in Judea,
- 15:34and Paul is telling them about the willingness of the Corinthians to give,
- 15:37and the Macedonians beg him. They plead with him to accept their gift.
- 15:44Paul says is essentially saying,
- 15:46listen, we would have just reflect rejected it out of right because they don't have
- 15:51anything to give.
- 15:54But given that they didn't have anything to give,
- 15:56what they did is they gave of themselves first.
- 15:59They said, Well, we don't have anything.
- 16:03But we'll go get something,
- 16:06and then we'll give it. So here you have a group of people
- 16:11who are already destitute, and they go get something so they can give
- 16:15it before they ever worry about their own state.
- 16:20This idea of putting God first.
- 16:25Turn over first Corinthians chapter sixteen.
- 16:39First Corinthians chapter 16. Now concerning the collection for the saints,
- 16:43as I have given order to the churches of Galatians,
- 16:45so you must do also. On the first day of the week,
- 16:50let each one of you lay something aside,
- 16:52storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.
- 16:57Now, as Paul gave the instruction to the Corinthians preceding the thing that he's
- 17:02writing about in Second Corinthians,
- 17:04when he gave the initial instruction,
- 17:07he says, All right.
- 17:08Corinthians. I've given the churches to the Order of Galatia.
- 17:12I've told them what they're supposed to be doing in regards to this gift
- 17:16to benefit the churches of Judea.
- 17:18He says you collect it on the first day of the week and you collect
- 17:21it according to what?
- 17:27As you have prospered. Now tie what you have from
- 17:33the Old Testament to what you have in the New Testament.
- 17:36God says the firstborn of everything is mine.
- 17:40What if you didn't have anything born?
- 17:45You have anything to give?
- 17:48No. Wha what if the first ~ fruit of all
- 17:54of your field belongs to the Lord and your field doesn't produce anything?
- 18:00You have anything to give?
- 18:03No. There are circumstances and there are times where God's
- 18:09expectation is zero.
- 18:14Because ten percent of zero is zero.
- 18:18All right. We do the math on that one pretty easy.
- 18:21And this was an interesting discussion that that came up when we were
- 18:25in the school of preaching because one of the instructors asked the question,
- 18:28Is it ever appropriate on the first day of the week to not give?
- 18:36And the answer is yes. When you've not prospered.
- 18:41Because what God is saying is,
- 18:45you give to me first. Now,
- 18:49what we have to be careful about is when we look at our bank account and go,
- 18:55well, I ~ I I obligated myself to the bank,
- 18:59and I obligated myself to the company that sells the boat,
- 19:02and I obligated myself to the company that sells the car,
- 19:04and I obligated myself to the
- 19:05To the company that sells the internet,
- 19:07and I obligated myself to the company that sells the cell phone.
- 19:09So as a result of that, I don't have anything to give to the Lord.
- 19:12That's not gonna work out. Because what you did is you said,
- 19:18Well, the house is important and the boat is important and the car
- 19:21is important and the cell phone's important,
- 19:22the internet's important, but the Lord needs to get what's left.
- 19:26Okay?
- 19:29So as we consider going all the way from Genesis 3 all the way forward,
- 19:33there's this fundamental idea in what God says
- 19:37is respected and acceptable when it comes to worship.
- 19:43And it is what is first.
- 19:46Now, yes, Ava.
- 20:01Absolutely. We're we're headed back to Exodus thirteen because one
- 20:05of the things that you saw already in the text that we read in Exodus twelve
- 20:10is that God said, Hey, everybody's not gonna give the same thing.
- 20:12Because not everything is appropriate at the same level.
- 20:16He already mentioned, you know what,
- 20:18for the number of some families,
- 20:21they should give a lamb by themselves.
- 20:26But there are other families that by reason of number it is not appropriate
- 20:30for them to give a lamb by themselves.
- 20:32They and their neighbor can combine together to give.
- 20:36Okay? So in this, you have
- 20:39God understanding circumstance.
- 20:43Over in 1 Corinthians chapter 16,
- 20:46Paul understands circumstance.
- 20:49Over in 2 Corinthians chapter 8,
- 20:53God and Paul both in in the writing of this to the church
- 20:56at Corinth are understanding circumstance.
- 20:59But the principle behind the giving
- 21:05is a manifestation of an attitude that says,
- 21:09God's going to come first, as opposed to God's going to come last.
- 21:13Turn ~ back to chapter 13 of Exodus.
- 21:26In Exodus chapter thirteen
- 21:30~ we're going to start in verse eleven.
- 21:33It shall be when the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites,
- 21:38as he swore to you and your fathers and gives it to you.
- 21:41Now, first thing to note, when does this ordinance begin?
- 21:51When they get into the land of Canaan.
- 21:52This is not an ordinance that begins at Mount Sinai.
- 21:56This is not an ordinance that begins in a forty year wilderness wandering.
- 22:00This is an ordinance that begins when they receive the land
- 22:07God had promised them. Okay? So worth pointing out,
- 22:11but there are going to be some things that occur along the way beforehand.
- 22:16He says, It shall be the case when you bring when the Lord brings you into
- 22:19the land of the Canaanites, as he swore to you and your fathers,
- 22:22and gives it to you, that you shall set apart to the Lord all that opens the womb.
- 22:28That is, every firstborn that comes from an animal which you have,
- 22:33the males shall be the Lord's.
- 22:35But every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb.
- 22:39And if you will not redeem it,
- 22:42then you shall break its neck.
- 22:44And all the firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem.
- 22:48So it shall be when your son asks you in time to come,
- 22:52saying, What is this? That you shall say to him,
- 22:55By strength of hand, the Lord brought us out of Egypt,
- 22:59out of the house of bondage. And it came to pass when Pharaoh
- 23:03was stubborn about letting us go,
- 23:05that the Lord killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt,
- 23:08both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of beast,
- 23:11therefore I sacrifice to the Lord all.
- 23:13All males that open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem,
- 23:18and it shall be as a sign on your hand and as frontlets between your eyes,
- 23:23for by strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.
- 23:28So God is going to essentially say,
- 23:31firstborn of everything, beast of burden,
- 23:34or one of your own children, if it's a firstborn male,
- 23:39it belongs to me. Now
- 23:43As you track forward in the text,
- 23:46you're going to find that God is going to offer to Israel a substitute.
- 23:50What is going to be the substitute for the firstborn of every tribe?
- 24:00That's correct. The Levites. Essentially,
- 24:04what is going to happen is God is going to claim the Levitical tribe as his tribe.
- 24:09So the Levites are going to be the substitute.
- 24:14And so every year, essentially,
- 24:16what they were to do is they were to number the number of Levites.
- 24:19And then they were to number the people.
- 24:21And they were to basically pay the difference between the Levites and
- 24:26the rest of the people.
- 24:28So that the Levites stood as the redemption of the firstborn.
- 24:34But as we bring these thoughts to mind,
- 24:39consider that God is saying,
- 24:43the first belongs to me.
- 24:46And you have that principle highlighted highlighted already
- 24:53in Genesis chapter four. It can is consistently true.
- 24:57All the way through the Old and the New Testament.
- 25:00Now I want to spend just a little bit of time in the book of Isaiah.
- 25:06We're gonna begin in Isaiah chapter six,
- 25:09and we're going to consider the idea
- 25:14of God's sovereignty. When you think about worship,
- 25:19and when you think about this idea of giving the first to the Lord,
- 25:23someone might come along and say,
- 25:25Well, why? I'm not an Israelite,
- 25:29and God didn't save my family out of Egyptian bondage,
- 25:32so why should I give the first to the
- 25:36To the Lord. And the answer comes from who God is.
- 25:41It comes from the sovereignty of God.
- 25:46~ that idea of a sovereign.
- 25:49What what is a sovereign in a national perspective?
- 25:56Alright, something that stands on its own.
- 25:58It generally speaking, you would be considering even either a government
- 26:04or a king or a queen. The sovereign is the ruler over that
- 26:11nation. Okay? They stand on their own,
- 26:14and everyone else is subject to them.
- 26:17That's what we're talking about.
- 26:19Isaiah highlights in a number of passages the sovereignty of.
- 26:26The exclusive rule of God.
- 26:29In Isaiah chapter six, beginning in verse one,
- 26:32we read, In the first year that King Uzziah died,
- 26:36I saw the Lord sitting on a throne,
- 26:39high and lifted up, and the train of his robe filled the temple.
- 26:44And there and above it stood Seraphim.
- 26:48Each one had six wings, with two he covered his face,
- 26:53with two he covered his feet.
- 26:55And with two he flew. And one cried to another and said,
- 26:59Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts.
- 27:03The whole earth is full of his glory.
- 27:08There's a song that we sing that's in our psalm books.
- 27:13Holy, holy, holy,
- 27:16Lord God Almighty. When you examine that song,
- 27:21that song
- 27:23Pertains to, it derives itself from Isaiah and other passages,
- 27:26but it pertains to the sovereignty of God.
- 27:31The declaration from the seraphim here is there's nobody else like
- 27:37God. There's nobody that's comparable to God.
- 27:40There's nobody who is above God.
- 27:43Notice what we read.
- 27:45And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out,
- 27:49and the house was filled with smoke.
- 27:51So I said to me, Woe is me, for I am undone,
- 27:54because I am a man of unclean lips,
- 27:57and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips,
- 27:59for my eyes have seen what? The king.
- 28:05Isaiah in division,
- 28:08as he sees this, he sees himself and he says,
- 28:11Woe is me!
- 28:16Now, when Isaiah says this,
- 28:20do you think Isaiah is saying,
- 28:22you know what? I I I'm really just I'm not a good Israelite.
- 28:26I I I don't do what the Lord says.
- 28:29Generally speaking, I live a pretty rebellious life against the Lord.
- 28:33You think that's what he means?
- 28:34No. What Isaiah is saying is I'm looking
- 28:40at myself and I'm looking at the Lord,
- 28:43and we don't compare.
- 28:46I'm looking at his holiness and I don't match up.
- 28:51I look at myself and I I realize I
- 28:55am imperfect in comparison to someone who is entirely perfect.
- 29:04And Isaiah will proclaim himself to be a man of unclean lips,
- 29:09dwelling in the midst of a people of unclean lips.
- 29:11Then one of the seraphim flew to me,
- 29:14having in his hand alive coal which had taken which he had taken from
- 29:19the tongs from the altar, and he touched my mouth with it and said,
- 29:23Behold this has touched your lips,
- 29:26your iniquity is taken away, and your sin purged.
- 29:33As the Seraphim comes from the throne of God,
- 29:36he goes to the altar because the remember the picture is happening in the temple.
- 29:41Okay? So the if you were to try and envision what Isaiah is seeing,
- 29:47Isaiah is seeing in the vision,
- 29:49here's the temple, and here's the place by the way,
- 29:53here's the place in the holiest of holies in the temple.
- 29:59Here's the throne of God. What represented the throne of God that
- 30:03had the seraphim over it in the temple in Israel?
- 30:10The Ark of the Covenant. When you think about the Ark of the Covenant,
- 30:15you have a box overlaid with gold with a lid.
- 30:21On the top of the lid you had the mercy seat,
- 30:24and over the mercy seat you had the seraphim.
- 30:29And so Isaiah in the vision is seeing the temple,
- 30:34not Israel's temple. He's seeing the Lord's temple.
- 30:39He's seeing the dwelling place of God.
- 30:42He's seeing the throne room of God.
- 30:43Very reminiscent for those of us who are in the Revelation class
- 30:46of Revelation chapter 4 and chapter 5.
- 30:48Isaiah sees the temple of God and he sees the throne room of God and
- 30:54he sees the seraphim, and the seraphim flies from above the
- 30:57throne of God and goes to the altar.
- 31:02Takes one of the coals of the altar and puts it on the mouth of Isaiah.
- 31:10And he says, Essentially, you're correct,
- 31:13you're right. Your lips are unclean.
- 31:18But now I've taken your iniquity away.
- 31:20I have made your lips holy.
- 31:27Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying,
- 31:31Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?
- 31:36As Isaiah is seeing this vision,
- 31:40he hears a proclamation, he hears a question from the Lord.
- 31:44I've got a message, I need to send it through somebody.
- 31:47Who can I get to go for us?
- 31:51Then I said, Here am I.
- 31:57Send me. Another one of the songs in our songbook.
- 32:00Here am I. Send me. But Isaiah sees
- 32:06the Lord in the vision.
- 32:09And his immediate reaction is this individual is
- 32:15of such great holiness and of such great power and such great position.
- 32:20I am not worthy to be in his presence.
- 32:23I am not worthy. My people are not worthy.
- 32:25And none of us can open our mouth and speak his words because of how holy it is.
- 32:31And yet God will make the lips of Isaiah holy.
- 32:36And then God will say, Now I'm going to use your lips.
- 32:39Verse 9, he said, Go and tell this people,
- 32:43keep on hearing, but do not understand.
- 32:48Keep on seeing.
- 32:50But do not perceive.
- 32:54Now, Jesus used a phrase over and over and over again,
- 33:00He that has ears to hear,
- 33:05let him hear. The message
- 33:09to Isaiah is go cause their ears to be closed.
- 33:15You're going to speak the message,
- 33:17and they're not going to listen.
- 33:19You're going to proclaim the holy message from the Lord,
- 33:24and they're not going to hear you.
- 33:26He says, Make the heart of this people dull and their ears heavy,
- 33:30shut their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears
- 33:33and understand with their heart and return and be healed.
- 33:36Wait a minute, Lord. Don't you want them to repent?
- 33:39He did.
- 33:43But the Lord knew the heart of the men.
- 33:44And the Lord, knowing the heart of men,
- 33:47knew that they weren't going to repent.
- 33:51But he was going to give them the message anyway.
- 33:54So in Isaiah 6,
- 33:58you have the beginning of this picture,
- 33:59and it's all throughout Isaiah,
- 34:01but we're going to jump over to Isaiah chapter 40.
- 34:03You have the beginning picture of the sovereignty of God.
- 34:11So Isaiah chapter forty, we find more of this picture.
- 34:16In Isaiah chapter forty, verse one,
- 34:18we read, Comfort, yes, comfort my people,
- 34:22says the Lord. Speak comfort to Jerusalem and cry out to her that
- 34:26her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned,
- 34:30for she has received from the Lord's hand double for all her sins.
- 34:35The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
- 34:37prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
- 34:42Every valley shall be exalted,
- 34:44and every mountain and hill brought low,
- 34:47the crooked places shall be made straight,
- 34:49and the rough places smooth, the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
- 34:54and all flesh shall see it together,
- 34:57for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
- 35:01Now Jesus is going to pray.
- 35:04Appropriately and rightfully connect this to the work of Elijah sorry
- 35:08of John the Baptist. But Isaiah is told
- 35:14to comfort Israel, and here's the comfort that is pronounced:
- 35:19Israel, you've suffered, you've gone through the hardship,
- 35:23you've gone through exile, you've been brought back,
- 35:26you've received double for your sins.
- 35:28Now I'm going to send myself.
- 35:33To you. But given that the king is going to show up,
- 35:39there are some preparations that need to be made.
- 35:45There was day and time where quite often politicians would travel
- 35:53by railroad and they'd get on the train and they'd make stops.
- 35:58Quite often those stump speeches would be made from the back of
- 36:02the train where everybody could see them.
- 36:06But there would, in many places where said politician was popular,
- 36:10there would be banners and preparations and there'd be decorations
- 36:14and everybody would be waiting to receive the person
- 36:20who is this important person.
- 36:24You can think of the receptions that occur down the streets of cities when
- 36:30the team that
- 36:32Is from that city wins the national championship of this sport or that sport.
- 36:37You can think back to the ticker tape parades at the end of World War II.
- 36:42You can think of all of these things that help us to visualize what Isaiah
- 36:47is being told here. What God tells Isaiah is:
- 36:50I'm coming through, and in preparation of me arriving,
- 36:55here's what you need to do: every valley needs to be lifted up.
- 37:00And every mountain needs to be brought low.
- 37:02I need a straight path.
- 37:07In preparation for my arrival.
- 37:11Now, that in actuality,
- 37:15in fulfillment, was going to be John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness
- 37:21and all Israel coming out to hear him.
- 37:23And what did John tell all Israel concerning who the Messiah was?
- 37:32But it wasn't him.
- 37:35He was the voice of one crying in the wilderness.
- 37:38Make ready for the Lord.
- 37:42Verse 6 The voice said,
- 37:45Cry out, and he said, What shall I cry?
- 37:48All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field.
- 37:52The grass withers, the flower fades away,
- 37:54but the breath of the Lord bl because the breath of the Lord blows on it,
- 37:57surely the people are grass, the grass withers,
- 38:00the flower fades. But the word of our God speaks.
- 38:04Stands for ever.
- 38:09God makes it clear I'm king,
- 38:14I'm sovereign, I'm holy,
- 38:18and when I speak, there's nothing that
- 38:24can stop my word coming to pass.
- 38:27Interestingly, when you jump over to John chapter 1,
- 38:32what is it that John describes Jesus as?
- 38:39The Word. In the beginning was the Word.
- 38:44And the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
- 38:47The same was in the beginning with God.
- 38:48All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.
- 38:52You get this picture of sovereignty.
- 38:56God says, I'm King, I'm on the throne,
- 39:00I'm holy, and I'm sending my word to you.
- 39:06Okay? Go forward to chapter 42.
- 39:11In Isaiah forty two.
- 39:19In a prophecy concerning the Messiah,
- 39:22we read, Behold, my servant whom I uphold,
- 39:26my elect one in whom my soul delights.
- 39:30I have put my spirit upon him,
- 39:33he will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.
- 39:36He will not cry out, nor raise his voice,
- 39:38nor cause his feet to be heard in the streets.
- 39:40A bruised reed he will not break,
- 39:43and smoking flax he will not quench.
- 39:46He will bring forth justice.
- 39:48For truth, he will not fail nor be discouraged till he has established justice
- 39:53in the earth, and the coastland shall wait for his law,
- 39:56thus says the God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out,
- 40:02who spread forth the earth, and that which comes from it,
- 40:05who gives breath to the people on it,
- 40:07and spirit to those who walk on it,
- 40:09I the Lord have called you in righteousness,
- 40:13and will hold your hand.
- 40:16I will keep you and give you as a covenant to the people,
- 40:19as a light to the Gentiles, to open blind eyes,
- 40:22to bring out prisoners from the prison,
- 40:25for those who sit in darkness from the prison house.
- 40:28I am the Lord, that is my name,
- 40:30and my glory I will not give to another,
- 40:34nor my praise to carved images.
- 40:37Behold, the former things have come to pass,
- 40:40and new things I declare, before they spring forth,
- 40:43I tell you of them.
- 40:45Sing to the Lord a new song, and his praise from the ends of the earth.
- 40:48You who go down to the sea and all that is in it,
- 40:52you coast lands and you inhabitants of them,
- 40:54let the wilderness and its cities lift up their voices,
- 40:57the villages that Kedar inhabits,
- 40:59let the inhabitants of Selah sing,
- 41:02let them shout from the top of the mountains,
- 41:04let them give glory to the Lord,
- 41:06and declare his praise in the coastlands.
- 41:09The Lord shall go forth like a mighty man,
- 41:11he shall stir up his zeal
- 41:13Like a man of war he shall cry out,
- 41:16yes shout aloud, he shall prevail against his enemies.
- 41:20I have held my peace a long time.
- 41:23I have been still and my r and restrained myself.
- 41:27Now I will cry like a woman in labor,
- 41:30I will pant and gasp at once, and I will lay waste the mountains and hills
- 41:35and dry up all their vegetations,
- 41:37I will make the rivers coastlands,
- 41:39and I will dry up the pools.
- 41:41I will bring the blind by a way they did not know.
- 41:44I will lead them in paths they have not known.
- 41:47I will make darkness light before them and crooked places straight.
- 41:50These things I will do for them and not forsake them.
- 41:54They shall be turned back. They shall be greatly ashamed.
- 41:58Who trust in carved images, who say to the molded images,
- 42:01You are our gods.
- 42:06As Isaiah prophesies concerning the servant,
- 42:09the one who the Lord said he would send on his behalf,
- 42:15the one who was the creator,
- 42:19the one who God says, This is mine,
- 42:23I am him. As he speaks concerning him,
- 42:29he says, I want you to understand,
- 42:31I don't give my glory.
- 42:36to anyone else. I don't give my glory to another.
- 42:44But as Jesus is raised up out of that watery grave of baptism
- 42:51in the Jordan River by John the Baptist,
- 42:53what occurs?
- 42:59All right. You have the spirit descending like a dove and a voice from heaven
- 43:03saying, This is my son.
- 43:10You go forward to the Mount of Transfiguration.
- 43:12There on the mount, you hear,
- 43:16This is my beloved son,
- 43:20hear you him.
- 43:24And that is in direct response
- 43:30to Peter saying, We need to build an altar
- 43:34to Moses and to Elijah.
- 43:38And to Jesus, who were all present there on the Mount of Transfiguration,
- 43:41and God says, no, no, no, you don't.
- 43:44Because I don't give my glory to anybody else.
- 43:47I didn't give my glory to Elijah.
- 43:50I didn't give my glory to Moses.
- 43:53But him.
- 43:57He is my glory. Jesus said,
- 44:01When you've seen me, you've seen the Father.
- 44:04All right, so as we examine this idea of sovereignty and as we examine this idea
- 44:11of worship, we understand there's this core idea that
- 44:15God establishes I'm unique.
- 44:18God isn't like anybody else.
- 44:22And no one else is like God. He is king of God.
- 44:27He is holy, he is sovereign, he is that which should be worshipped,
- 44:33and no one else should. And so when he demands the first,
- 44:38he's demanding what is his. And when we refuse it,
- 44:42we're stealing what is his. And we need to be mindful as we consider.
- 44:57How we worship and how we involve ourselves in worship that
- 45:02we are not the focus of worship.
- 45:08He is. And we need to have more times and more occasions where
- 45:14we sit back and have the same mindset as Isaiah,
- 45:17woe is me. For I'm in the presence of God,
- 45:22and I am not perfect.
- 45:28But through his work I am made holy.
- 45:31Okay? Thank you for your
