• 3:05
  Speaker 2: to the show.
• 3:05
  Speaker 4: Good morning, Mistralla.
• 3:06
Speaker 1: Thank you for having me.
• 3:07
Speaker 2: You know, you didn't know when I booked you on
• 3:09
Speaker 2: the show that you'd be opening up, or as we
• 3:11
Speaker 2: call it in the wrestling business, you'd be jerking the curtain.
• 3:14
Speaker 2: Have the pro wrestling legend Ricky Morton, get up and roll,
• 3:17
Speaker 2: Let's go. It's will you a big fan ever back
• 3:19
Speaker 2: in the day. I know you're an athlete, a big
• 3:21
  Speaker 2: wrestling family.
• 3:22
Speaker 4: Like when we were kids, we all watched Oh yeah, yeah,
• 3:24
  Speaker 4: yeah ww.
• 3:29
Speaker 2: Go back to the I'm not a fan, but you
• 3:32
Speaker 2: know I'm an old NWA guy. You know, the Rick
• 3:34
Speaker 2: Flair or Ricky Mortons, and we'll talk through Road Warriors,
• 3:37
Speaker 2: Dusty Roads, Tommy Rich and later when I got into
• 3:39
Speaker 2: the business, I got to know all these people and
• 3:41
Speaker 2: traveled with them and so on and so forth. Mostly
• 3:44
Speaker 2: pretty good guys, Ricky especially, and so he and I
• 3:46
Speaker 2: have remained in touch.
• 3:48
Speaker 4: But you're right said they were the probably some of
• 3:51
Speaker 4: the best athletes in the world.
• 3:53
Speaker 2: People don't get understand that the people say, oh, it's
• 3:56
Speaker 2: this or it's that you go out there. My favorite
• 3:59
Speaker 2: one always my I promise will move on. It's my
• 4:01
Speaker 2: favorite one. Was always, Well, they know how when you
• 4:03
Speaker 2: throw them over the top rope, they know how to land. Well,
• 4:06
Speaker 2: it's still you know stuff. Yeah, it's still it's the
• 4:11
Speaker 2: same floor that you're playing basketball on or whatever there.
• 4:14
Speaker 2: So there's all yeah, there's there's a right way to land.
• 4:16
Speaker 2: You want to hear one sound not to show, but
• 4:19
Speaker 2: those guys, yeah, great athletes, they are fantastic ass.
• 4:22
  Speaker 5: Uh.
• 4:23
Speaker 2: So you are appointed to the board for the first term,
• 4:25
Speaker 2: you want to see back in the May primary. We've
• 4:27
Speaker 2: we've had had you on since and how's it been overall?
• 4:30
Speaker 4: It's been good, you know, a continuation of of where
• 4:34
Speaker 4: we were when I first got on there. And uh
• 4:37
Speaker 4: that comes down to making sure we're doing what's best
• 4:40
Speaker 4: for the for the children in Kanall County and trying
• 4:42
Speaker 4: to manage a budget which has several restraints. And uh,
• 4:49
Speaker 4: I really like our board. I think you know, every
• 4:51
Speaker 4: one of them care about the direction of Kanall County schools.
• 4:55
Speaker 4: I really like our central office staff. I think doctor
• 4:58
Speaker 4: Potter does a good job. I mean you know, and
• 5:00
Speaker 4: she's got good people around her, and I think good
• 5:03
Speaker 4: things are going on in our school system. I think
• 5:06
Speaker 4: I told you last time I was here. You know,
• 5:08
Speaker 4: I've gone out into our schools. I'm taking a look
• 5:10
Speaker 4: at what's going on. Of course, a lot of the
• 5:12
Speaker 4: principles were god when I was a principal, and these
• 5:15
Speaker 4: people are in administration positions that I've worked with. So
• 5:19
Speaker 4: I'm not going in like Big Brothers watching trying to
• 5:22
  Speaker 4: find say.
• 5:22
Speaker 2: Because you've been a former principal, you know that could
• 5:24
Speaker 2: be a little nervous.
• 5:25
Speaker 4: Yeah, but I still want to go in and see
• 5:27
Speaker 4: see their programs and give them an opportunity to tell me, hey, look,
• 5:31
Speaker 4: this is what we're doing here. This is this program,
• 5:33
  Speaker 4: that program.
• 5:34
Speaker 2: And really I really still.
• 5:35
Speaker 4: Feel like I mean, I'm a proponent of public schools,
• 5:38
Speaker 4: and I think that we are preparing our children for
• 5:41
Speaker 4: a life of uncertainty and allowing them to type into
• 5:45
Speaker 4: their own personal resources and their abilities to have a
• 5:52
Speaker 4: happy and fulfillful life.
• 5:54
Speaker 2: You know, it is not an easy time. And you
• 5:57
Speaker 2: and I talked about this before, and other board members
• 5:59
Speaker 2: have said it. Two might to be on the school
• 6:01
Speaker 2: board anywhere, especially gnawh county, school closures, consolidations, population loss,
• 6:05
Speaker 2: revenue loss, trying to do more with less money. Some parents,
• 6:09
Speaker 2: you know, choosing a different path for their kids, which
• 6:13
Speaker 2: is their right. I mean, I cletely understand that, but
• 6:16
Speaker 2: you know, there's a lot of hard decisions that have
• 6:18
Speaker 2: to be made. And we did a story that came
• 6:20
Speaker 2: out of the board meeting Monday night. The riff or
• 6:23
Speaker 2: reduction force numbers for Kanawh County schools a little bit
• 6:26
Speaker 2: different than what maybe we originally thought it was going
• 6:28
Speaker 2: to be. You want to weigh in on that.
• 6:29
  Speaker 1: I can.
• 6:31
Speaker 4: Let's start out by saying that doctor Potter and Melanie
• 6:35
Speaker 4: Meadows are treasurer. They do a great job of balancing
• 6:38
Speaker 4: that budget. And that's part of and you can saw
• 6:41
Speaker 4: it on the news yesterday whether we had a county
• 6:43
Speaker 4: in West Virginia was taken over by a state department
• 6:46
Speaker 4: because they were grossly overstaffed Harrison County.
• 6:50
  Speaker 1: Yes, Well I didn't want.
• 6:50
Speaker 2: To say, but I'll say it. And there are others
• 6:54
Speaker 2: as well that are still understakeingry yes, And I will
• 6:56
Speaker 2: tell you I have you know people that are that
• 6:59
Speaker 2: are a big part of that with the state Department
• 7:02
Speaker 2: that are friends of mine, and they don't want that.
• 7:04
Speaker 4: They don't want to have to come in and take over.
• 7:05
Speaker 4: I mean, that is a daunting task for those people.
• 7:10
Speaker 4: So it's important for us and important for what they
• 7:13
Speaker 4: do in central office to manage those resources and bounce
• 7:17
Speaker 4: the budget. And unfortunately, when you lose children, you lose money.
• 7:22
Speaker 4: So that comes down to you have to cut staff.
• 7:24
Speaker 4: And now you know, and I hear how top heavy
• 7:27
Speaker 4: our board of Education is and that's not the case.
• 7:30
Speaker 4: That's a low percentage of our budget. And I will
• 7:34
Speaker 4: tell you on side note real quick. When I was
• 7:36
Speaker 4: still a principal, we had seven superintendents. We had two elementary,
• 7:40
Speaker 4: one middle school, one high school, a curriculum superintendent, a
• 7:43
Speaker 4: deputy superintendent, then the superintendent. Seven of them and that
• 7:47
Speaker 4: has now been whittled down to three people and it's
• 7:51
Speaker 4: doctor Potter. And then we have a Jene Smith that's
• 7:54
Speaker 4: over top of the high schools and middle schools. They
• 7:57
Speaker 4: consolidated that and the man of Maze is doing the
• 7:59
Speaker 4: elementary goals and you know they had to pick up
• 8:02
Speaker 4: the slack. You know, their work has doubled and tripled.
• 8:05
Speaker 4: But at the same time, it comes down to managing
• 8:08
Speaker 4: the budget and being financially responsible. But you know Paul's
• 8:12
Speaker 4: doing everything she can to protect our employees on that level.
• 8:17
Speaker 4: So here again, we don't want to lose anyone you know,
• 8:20
Speaker 4: that has an economic impact on us on the Kanaw Valley.
• 8:25
Speaker 4: I mean, these people that we have to end up
• 8:28
Speaker 4: you who lose their positions are going to have to
• 8:30
Speaker 4: go somewhere for work. They're not going to be shopping
• 8:33
Speaker 4: in our businesses. They're going to have to possibly move
• 8:36
Speaker 4: to find work and be able to teach or do
• 8:39
Speaker 4: whatever they want to do. But it is a challenging
• 8:42
Speaker 4: time and we don't yes, and I will tell you
• 8:45
Speaker 4: on your comment, the numbers did change. We knew that
• 8:48
Speaker 4: was going to happen through attrition. People retire and then
• 8:54
Speaker 4: people move for other reasons, and then we're able to
• 8:56
Speaker 4: go back and bring these people back. We didn't get
• 8:59
Speaker 4: down to zero. You know, losing one of our employees
• 9:03
Speaker 4: is too many in my opinion.
• 9:04
Speaker 5: But here it is.
• 9:06
Speaker 4: You know, we're in this situation and in a predicament
• 9:10
Speaker 4: here again where we have to balance that budget.
• 9:12
Speaker 2: Talking to Mike rby Gas again from the Knawa County
• 9:14
Speaker 2: Bard of Education, Mike, we have a story posted at
• 9:16
Speaker 2: WCHS network dot com this morning, there were some concerns
• 9:19
Speaker 2: with the Garnet Career Center building. Of course, this was
• 9:23
Speaker 2: you know, the pre segregation high school, and then we
• 9:25
Speaker 2: fast forward to twenty twenty two. The school system deeded
• 9:29
Speaker 2: the property to the Garnet Alumni Association and they had
• 9:33
Speaker 2: a lot of plans for the building. But from what
• 9:35
Speaker 2: we've been told, for one reason or another of those
• 9:37
Speaker 2: plans didn't pan out and the building is a state
• 9:39
Speaker 2: in a state of disrepair. Yesterday the growth of the
• 9:42
Speaker 2: building was struck by lightning. So what happens next, Well,
• 9:46
Speaker 2: that's a mess. Not one hundred percent sure where that's
• 9:50
Speaker 2: going end up going. I know that there was talk
• 9:52
  Speaker 2: already to.
• 9:55
Speaker 4: Possibly us having to take that property back over again
• 9:59
Speaker 4: because know that the group that they needed that too,
• 10:01
Speaker 4: and that was before my time, but they weren't able
• 10:04
Speaker 4: to fulfill our obligation to doing that. But I will
• 10:07
Speaker 4: tell you that, like we needed the Herbert Hoover property
• 10:11
Speaker 4: over to the city of Town of Clinton, and and
• 10:14
Speaker 4: the McKinley Middle School of the City of Saint Auban's
• 10:16
Speaker 4: taking over part of that, which.
• 10:18
Speaker 1: I'm all in favor.
• 10:19
Speaker 4: First of all, I never want to close the school,
• 10:22
Speaker 4: but I'm also here again I've said this on the
• 10:24
Speaker 4: campaign trail, I'm going to be financially responsible, and when
• 10:27
Speaker 4: it comes down to it, you.
• 10:28
Speaker 2: Know that we may end up having to do that.
• 10:30
Speaker 4: But my point is it's good for the community and
• 10:33
Speaker 4: community groups and organizations to be able to go in
• 10:36
Speaker 4: and utilize these properties that we're abandoning. So where we
• 10:40
Speaker 4: are with Garnet itself, I'm not a home since sure,
• 10:43
Speaker 4: I know I've been told just out on the street
• 10:45
Speaker 4: that there are people. I mean, it's prime location as
• 10:48
Speaker 4: far as property is concerned, and I know that there
• 10:50
Speaker 4: will be people like to get their hands on that
• 10:52
Speaker 4: property and go in and do some work in there,
• 10:56
Speaker 4: but or possibly take that out and develop that property.
• 11:00
Speaker 4: I'm not sure where it's going to end up. And
• 11:03
Speaker 4: I hate it, you know, that's that's history in our
• 11:07
Speaker 4: in our county and in our state, and you hate
• 11:10
Speaker 4: to see those types of things go by the wayside.
• 11:13
Speaker 4: But and I haven't been in that school since it
• 11:16
Speaker 4: has closed, so I'm not sure where it is, but
• 11:19
Speaker 4: I have we have been informed that it is in disrepair.
• 11:24
Speaker 5: Something's going to have to have for.
• 11:25
Speaker 2: We let you go earlier this week, this I Love
• 11:28
Speaker 2: West Virginia Public Schools campaign was launched. I know Superintendent
• 11:31
Speaker 2: Potters behind it. We had the Mingo County superintendent on
• 11:33
Speaker 2: midday the talk line guys talked to the Jackson County superintendent.
• 11:37
  Speaker 5: Uh.
• 11:38
Speaker 2: They plan on going to the legislature. Their plan is
• 11:40
Speaker 2: during the sixty day regular session there will be at
• 11:42
Speaker 2: least one county represented every day. There one county school system,
• 11:46
Speaker 2: I mean represented there every day. Where are you on
• 11:48
  Speaker 2: this whole thing?
• 11:49
  Speaker 1: I think it's great.
• 11:50
Speaker 4: You know, it's it's kind of sad that you've got
• 11:52
Speaker 4: to sell your own school system, but I mean maybe
• 11:55
Speaker 4: that's where we are. I still am the firm believer
• 11:59
Speaker 4: the public schools is best for kids on a multitude
• 12:02
Speaker 4: of levels. On for the children themselves. I mean for
• 12:08
Speaker 4: thousands of kids in our state, they that is a
• 12:11
Speaker 4: safe haven for them.
• 12:13
Speaker 5: They know that they.
• 12:13
Speaker 4: Are cared for in our public schools. They are nurtured there,
• 12:17
Speaker 4: they are fed there. And what we want our teachers
• 12:21
Speaker 4: to do a fantastic job. And are all of them perfect?
• 12:24
Speaker 4: Know they're not, And you know, the ones that aren't
• 12:27
Speaker 4: we try to bring along or we end up having
• 12:29
Speaker 4: to get rid of and and don't want to do
• 12:31
Speaker 4: that either. But at the same time, we're offering a
• 12:35
Speaker 4: good service to our children. Here again, I've been into
• 12:39
Speaker 4: schools and I've seen it and and I think parents,
• 12:43
Speaker 4: and I've been part of some parent organizations that are
• 12:46
Speaker 4: pro public school they see the direction that we're going
• 12:52
Speaker 4: and they wanted to stop. They they they're they're still
• 12:55
Speaker 4: believer in public schools. And here again, I've told you
• 12:58
Speaker 4: this before. I'm never going to tell somebody what's best
• 13:00
Speaker 4: for their own children, but I really think that they
• 13:03
Speaker 4: should think twice before they pull their kids out and
• 13:07
Speaker 4: let them sit on an iPad in her house by
• 13:10
Speaker 4: themself and be homeschooled. I really think that the good
• 13:15
Speaker 4: things are going on in public schools, and I think
• 13:17
Speaker 4: this is part of that. That message really needs to
• 13:22
Speaker 4: be put out there. And then people really got to
• 13:24
Speaker 4: quit sitting on their hands with the legislature and asked
• 13:28
Speaker 4: them to go back and take a hard look at
• 13:31
Speaker 4: how they're funding our school system.
• 13:32
Speaker 2: All right, Mike Harber guests, I appreciate you being here

• 19:22
Speaker 5: you know, since my time in wrestling and right now
• 19:26
Speaker 5: it's like being here on earth and traveling to Mars.
• 19:32
  Speaker 5: Everything's different. It's not the same. Uh. I can't say
• 19:37
Speaker 5: nothing bad about my business. I you know, it changed
• 19:40
Speaker 5: for the best. A lot of these young kids are
• 19:43
Speaker 5: getting breaks that they would have never got uh back
• 19:47

• 19:49
Speaker 5: second generation wrestler. My dad, you know, he taught me.
• 19:56
Speaker 5: I mean it was you know, I had an advantage,
• 19:58

Speaker 5: to go through just to be recognized as a small kid.
• 20:10
  Speaker 5: Small kid riseling.
• 20:11
Speaker 2: Well and you were a star. And you know, at
• 20:14
Speaker 2: a time when the business was favoring the big guys.
• 20:17
Speaker 2: You think about the nineteen eighties and you think about
• 20:20
Speaker 2: the Lex Lugers and the Hulk Cogan's and all those guys.
• 20:23
Speaker 2: And you're right, the smaller guys actually are probably looked
• 20:27
Speaker 2: upon more favorably now than what they were when you
• 20:30
Speaker 2: broke in, because if you weren't like six' three and
• 20:34
Speaker 2: and jack to the, ceiling a lot of times you
• 20:35
Speaker 2: didn't get an opportunity back in those.
