Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Tony Johnson: Rugby Commentator previews the All Blacks v England match at Twickenham
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The All Blacks are facing England that took in him
- 0:02Speaker 1: this weekend and the team was named overnight Boden Barrett
- 0:04Speaker 1: back in the number ten Jersey. Largely different squad, completely
- 0:08Speaker 1: changed other than three players basically from the team that
- 0:11Speaker 1: we played against Japan. Tony Johnson's rugby commentators with US
- 0:15Speaker 1: Life this morning, Tony, good morning.
- 0:17Speaker 2: To you morning. Right.
- 0:18Speaker 1: A couple of things to whip through. First of all,
- 0:20Speaker 1: that number ten significant.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it is because mcdamien McKenzie's been giving a fairly
- 0:27Speaker 2: long leash this year. He's just been a bit too erratic,
- 0:31Speaker 2: brilliant at his best, but just tended to be I
- 0:35Speaker 2: think almost part of this the All Blacks sort of
- 0:39Speaker 2: falling off the cliff a little bit in the second
- 0:41Speaker 2: half as they've been doing Barrett. I don't think it
- 0:43Speaker 2: was their original intention to go back to him, but
- 0:47Speaker 2: his experience will be invaluable, perhaps just a little more consistent,
- 0:53Speaker 2: and so they put him together with his brother, so
- 0:57Speaker 2: it's a key thing. The other one, too, is half back.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I think we expected TJ. Peterinader perhaps with his experience,
- 1:03Speaker 2: to be part of the max. It's been quite bold.
- 1:05Speaker 2: They start with Royguard Sorry they start with Atima royguard
- 1:09Speaker 2: off the bench. I think that's a really great move,
- 1:12Speaker 2: and you know there's a couple of other selections there.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I suspect Ethan the group might be injured. Otherwise he
- 1:18Speaker 2: would have been in the front row.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I was going to answer about that. Is that
- 1:22Speaker 1: nothing nefarious off the field?
- 1:25Speaker 2: No, I don't think so. I presume it's some sort
- 1:28Speaker 2: of injury thing. I haven't seen the comments around it.
- 1:31Speaker 2: I've just seen the team yah, Ryan, but I would say,
- 1:35Speaker 2: have to be an injury.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Do you think we Damian McKenzie will ever get back
- 1:38Speaker 1: to go back to number ten or do you think
- 1:39Speaker 1: that's sort of.
- 1:41Speaker 2: I think he will, Yeah, but I think he's just
- 1:45Speaker 2: got to show a bit more consistency. And as I say,
- 1:49Speaker 2: we saw it in the game against Japan where the
- 1:51Speaker 2: all backs in the second quarter were just playing brilliantly
- 1:55Speaker 2: and then it dropped away in the second half, and
- 1:58Speaker 2: you know, for one reason or another, he just seemed
- 2:02Speaker 2: to be symptomatic of that. He's got so much talent.
- 2:06Speaker 2: But I just think in a test match like this,
- 2:08Speaker 2: a very high op game test, I think they've felt
- 2:12Speaker 2: to continue with it might have just been a bit
- 2:13Speaker 2: of a risk, but he'll come off the bench and
- 2:15Speaker 2: I think that what might be where he can provide
- 2:17Speaker 2: some really good.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Value, big game before a big Haucker.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean there's three certainties in life, really, isn't,
- 2:26Speaker 2: you know? Death taxes and a cacophony of complaining in
- 2:30Speaker 2: the British media about the Huker ahead of an all
- 2:33Speaker 2: black England test at Twickenham. I mean you could set
- 2:36Speaker 2: your clock to it, couldn't. It comes up every time.
- 2:39Speaker 2: It's the one part of the world where it comes
- 2:41Speaker 2: up to this degree. And I suspect I think it
- 2:43Speaker 2: portrays some rather deep rooted colonial attitudes at times. But
- 2:48Speaker 2: how seriously should we take it? How seriously should we
- 2:51Speaker 2: take the comments of Stephen Jones, a guy who sort of,
- 2:54Speaker 2: you know, I think seems to have this deep seated
- 2:56Speaker 2: hatred of the all Blacks, which you know, influences the
- 3:00Speaker 2: way he writes. And also the guy who sparked at Marla,
- 3:03Speaker 2: you know, a guy who fired this off on his
- 3:05Speaker 2: way out the door exiting the England camp for whatever reason,
- 3:09Speaker 2: so he's not actually going to front up in the test.
- 3:11Speaker 2: A guy who has once fined twenty thousand pounds in
- 3:14Speaker 2: banned for two games for making an ethnical insult against
- 3:19Speaker 2: one of the Welsh players, called him a gypsy boy
- 3:21Speaker 2: because of the player's background, all the while the crowd
- 3:24Speaker 2: in the background singing a song about slavery. I'm not
- 3:27Speaker 2: sure why we should take it seriously, but we do
- 3:29Speaker 2: delight in taking outrage and these things, and so.
- 3:35Speaker 1: We've taken the bait hotlines singer, haven't we? Tony Johnson,
- 3:38Speaker 1: rugby commentator. For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge,

- 3:47Speaker 2: on iHeartRadio.
