- 0:18Speaker 1: Casey Smith and Tyler Jones.
- 0:21Speaker 2: With cooler temps across much of the country, many are
- 0:23Speaker 2: seeing deer movement creep towards daylight. For September hunting. It
- 0:27Speaker 2: seems the stoke is pretty high for taking down target
- 0:30Speaker 2: bucks in the next week. This is rutfresh, Let's go.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Welcome to another episode of rutfresh, brought to you by
- 0:46Speaker 2: First Light. We are glad that we have got a
- 0:50Speaker 2: bunch of new First Light to deal with this year, case,
- 0:53Speaker 2: aren't we.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Man, I've been out here sweating it up in New Mexico,
- 0:59Speaker 4: so having to change clothes pretty often. So it's kind
- 1:02Speaker 4: of nice. A lot of different gear, you know, it
- 1:04Speaker 4: is kind of cool.
- 1:05Speaker 5: The h the Marino stuff I wear.
- 1:07Speaker 4: I've been wearing a wick a lot. You can wear
- 1:09Speaker 4: it a couple of days and it ain't no sweat,
- 1:11Speaker 4: you know, as far as like stink or whatever.
- 1:13Speaker 2: So it worked pretty well. Yeah, it's Uh, the marino
- 1:16Speaker 2: in the mountains, especially when you're not able to get
- 1:19Speaker 2: showers and stuff, Man, is just the thing. So and
- 1:23Speaker 2: that's that's the thing that I was drawing the first
- 1:25Speaker 2: slight first for was in twenty sixteen. Man, was that
- 1:28Speaker 2: marino piece. I was told that it was the best twister.
- 1:31Speaker 2: I'm telling you, hey, and I nailed it, dude, I
- 1:34Speaker 2: nailed it.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Sorry to bring a pittion to it.
- 1:36Speaker 2: You do well? Yeah, thanks dude. So we're fixing again
- 1:40Speaker 2: in the white Tail. But real quick, how's the how's
- 1:43Speaker 2: the el kint going? Elk cutting's great?
- 1:45Speaker 5: Man?
- 1:46Speaker 4: Uh, it's there's lulls the mill of day because it's
- 1:49Speaker 4: kind of hot.
- 1:49Speaker 5: But otherwise, I mean.
- 1:50Speaker 4: They were rocking and rolling. We actually had kind of
- 1:53Speaker 4: a slower morning this morning. We tried a new area,
- 1:57Speaker 4: and uh, I kind of have Actually one of the
- 1:59Speaker 4: things that we do with the element whenever we're hunting
- 2:02Speaker 4: out here anywhere for anything, is we do our best
- 2:05Speaker 4: to kind of cross off areas as that's unproductive ground.
- 2:10Speaker 4: And I actually haven't been able to do that too
- 2:11Speaker 4: much here because there's a lot of elk around. So
- 2:16Speaker 4: for the first time this morning I was able to
- 2:17Speaker 4: say you know what, probably not coming back here. Yeah,
- 2:20Speaker 4: so that's probably a pretty optimistic way of looking at that,
- 2:23Speaker 4: but that's what I do.
- 2:25Speaker 6: Bratt.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, you know, another good way to cross ground
- 2:28Speaker 2: off or the opposite right, to find the good spot
- 2:31Speaker 2: is to hang trail cameras. And so that's something that
- 2:34Speaker 2: we've been doing. You guys have been doing some of that.
- 2:38Speaker 2: We are obviously apart right now, but I've been hanging
- 2:40Speaker 2: trail cameras too. I actually just hung a new camera
- 2:46Speaker 2: that is kind of at the back of my property
- 2:49Speaker 2: because I'm not really like looking for the big buck
- 2:53Speaker 2: because I haven't seen a buck on this property all year.
- 2:56Speaker 2: In the year twenty three, I've not seen a buck
- 2:58Speaker 2: on this property. But I do have a lot of
- 3:02Speaker 2: deer around. And what I'm trying to understand is where
- 3:04Speaker 2: these deer are coming into this corner. So that because
- 3:06Speaker 2: i the predominant wind on this property is not a
- 3:09Speaker 2: great wind. It's a really iffy wind, and so I'm
- 3:12Speaker 2: trying to figure out, like when where are they coming
- 3:14Speaker 2: into the corner of this property from. And if I
- 3:17Speaker 2: can better understand that, then I know, I know I
- 3:20Speaker 2: can hunt that. You know, that really shady wind there
- 3:23Speaker 2: that's really uh, they maybe feels just just off or
- 3:28Speaker 2: even like it could be bad if I know that
- 3:30Speaker 2: they're coming in from you know, we've got to southeast.
- 3:33Speaker 2: If I know they're coming in from the west, a
- 3:34Speaker 2: little bit more than what I think they could be.
- 3:36Speaker 2: So I've got that camera set up on a stake
- 3:39Speaker 2: in the in the corner of that corner there and
- 3:42Speaker 2: trying to understand that. So, like, there's there's a lot
- 3:44Speaker 2: of things you can do with trail cameras. Like I said,
- 3:46Speaker 2: we we eliminate a lot of ground, especially like on
- 3:48Speaker 2: Texas Public, where uh, there's a lot of ground to
- 3:51Speaker 2: be eliminated. There's only a couple of good spots, you know,
- 3:54Speaker 2: and uh, every once in a while you run into
- 3:56Speaker 2: something good, you know.
- 3:58Speaker 4: So it's also a good thing to do for human
- 4:02Speaker 4: traffic as well.
- 4:03Speaker 6: You know.
- 4:03Speaker 4: That's that One of the things on Texas Public, at
- 4:05Speaker 4: least whenever we're eliminating ground is you see a dude
- 4:08Speaker 4: in orange walking around on camera and you know, like, hey,
- 4:11Speaker 4: that place is pretty blown up.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I guarantee you it'll it'll just walking through one time.
- 4:16Speaker 2: We've seen it shut down cameras pretty good, you know, yep.
- 4:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 4:19Speaker 2: And what's handy about that though, is like, you know
- 4:22Speaker 2: why the why it's shut down if it does, and
- 4:25Speaker 2: if it doesn't, then you're like, Okay, well they didn't
- 4:27Speaker 2: walk through anything important at the time, so yeah, good
- 4:30Speaker 2: to go or whatever. But it's it's just good to
- 4:32Speaker 2: keep that in mind. And we've seen that happen. And
- 4:34Speaker 2: you know, you start seeing a dude in there two
- 4:36Speaker 2: or three times in the month of October, then you know,
- 4:38Speaker 2: probably in November that place is not going to hunt
- 4:41Speaker 2: very well because he's probably going to be back in there.
- 4:43Speaker 2: So yeah.
- 4:44Speaker 4: You know something that the longer a hunt and the
- 4:47Speaker 4: more I messed with with stealth cameras, especially the more
- 4:53Speaker 4: look at cameras more on a year to year traffic
- 4:58Speaker 4: like data wise, as opposed to to the here and now,
- 5:01Speaker 4: you like you'd think that you would be thinking about,
- 5:05Speaker 4: like with cell cams, you know, like the the borderline
- 5:08Speaker 4: fair chase thing is like, oh, he's in there right now,
- 5:10Speaker 4: let's go. But it's actually I drift the other direction
- 5:13Speaker 4: where it's like, Okay, since I have a cell cam
- 5:16Speaker 4: in there, I don't have to return to this place
- 5:18Speaker 4: and I can leave it out all year long. And
- 5:20Speaker 4: it's almost like a sacrificial camera. I may or may
- 5:22Speaker 4: not ever make it back to go pick up, or
- 5:25Speaker 4: it's probably get stolen or messed with or something between
- 5:27Speaker 4: now and then, you know whatever. But I can accrue
- 5:30Speaker 4: like months of data without having to go and fiddle
- 5:34Speaker 4: with the camera. And actually we did that on the
- 5:36Speaker 4: way out here, stopped in a super super secret little
- 5:39Speaker 4: spot on some public ground and put out a camera
- 5:42Speaker 4: on a big creek crossing that I don't expect to
- 5:46Speaker 4: do a lot right now, but as the rut moves on,
- 5:49Speaker 4: you know, as things start to heat up, which is
- 5:53Speaker 4: what rutfresh is about, right bringing the report as to
- 5:56Speaker 4: what's going on in the deer woods. As that starts
- 5:58Speaker 4: to push towards you know, late October, were in November,
- 6:01Speaker 4: I expect that camera to lit up, and really I'm
- 6:03Speaker 4: hoping for some good information that will lead me to
- 6:07Speaker 4: making some interesting decisions for the years to come.
- 6:10Speaker 2: For sure. Man, you know, the cell cams are pretty
- 6:13Speaker 2: handy also in a more immediate sense, not necessarily in
- 6:19Speaker 2: the most immediate, but for us, like I think about
- 6:23Speaker 2: a place that or an area at least wasn't at
- 6:27Speaker 2: this exact place, but an area where you and I
- 6:30Speaker 2: had a camera or I put a camera out a
- 6:32Speaker 2: couple of years ago, and it wasn't super far off
- 6:35Speaker 2: the road and we didn't expect much out of it. It
- 6:37Speaker 2: was a regular camera trail camera, and we went and
- 6:41Speaker 2: checked it, like we pulled the cart on like the
- 6:42Speaker 2: last day of the season, and we were blown away.
- 6:45Speaker 2: It had been there since August, and we were blown
- 6:47Speaker 2: away by what was in there, and we were like,
- 6:50Speaker 2: there's bucks everywhere. It's sitn't even far off the road.
- 6:52Speaker 2: You know what's going on. So it taught us something
- 6:54Speaker 2: for the next year. But at the same time, you know,
- 6:58Speaker 2: you're able to now with a cell camera. It's not
- 7:00Speaker 2: like the bucks in there right now, go get him
- 7:03Speaker 2: because this place is kind of far from us anyway.
- 7:06Speaker 2: But it's more like, hey, there's nobody in there this season,
- 7:11Speaker 2: so let's go in there. And it allows you to
- 7:13Speaker 2: have a good fun hunt on public land instead of yeah,
- 7:17Speaker 2: I know, it's just like the fun ant, you know
- 7:19Speaker 2: what I mean, it's the same same word, but uh,
- 7:23Speaker 2: that's uh, you know, that's for me. It's like, man,
- 7:28Speaker 2: people want to hate on these things, but I mean,
- 7:30Speaker 2: and then they can certainly be used, but in the
- 7:33Speaker 2: wrong way. But so can a vehicle, you know what
- 7:35Speaker 2: I mean? Like can you cross a rifle a bow
- 7:37Speaker 2: and arrow?
- 7:38Speaker 4: You know, bow and arrows were uh not legal for
- 7:41Speaker 4: hunting for a long time because they're silent. You know,
- 7:43Speaker 4: that was the thing in some states because they're quiet,
- 7:45Speaker 4: so people they didn't know. They thought people were poaching
- 7:48Speaker 4: because they could shoot a bone arrows. Like okay, well
- 7:50Speaker 4: just don't you know you can don't do bad things?
- 7:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, dude, people are going to be evil
- 7:56Speaker 2: with things, you know what I mean? So like, uh,
- 7:58Speaker 2: and not to say that, like killing a deer that
- 8:00Speaker 2: you saw in the camera twenty minutes ago is evil.
- 8:02Speaker 2: It's up to you, man, Like you know, if you
- 8:04Speaker 2: don't go over the limit, they're set there for a reason, Right,
- 8:07Speaker 2: shoot your deer and be done or whatever if you want,
- 8:10Speaker 2: if that's what you want out of your hunting experience.
- 8:11Speaker 2: But my whole thought is this, Like when I go
- 8:15Speaker 2: traveling to hunt out of state or even in state,
- 8:19Speaker 2: on public ground somewhere, and I got to get up
- 8:21Speaker 2: at you know, two am to go do that, it
- 8:23Speaker 2: would be awesome if I could go have a hunt
- 8:26Speaker 2: that was fun. And I don't get like worn down
- 8:28Speaker 2: at the end of the year because I'm hunting a
- 8:30Speaker 2: place that I didn't know a guy was in or whatever,
- 8:32Speaker 2: you know. So it's just yep for me. That's that's
- 8:35Speaker 2: the main benefit of cell cameras money.
- 8:37Speaker 4: As you bring that up, because last year we were
- 8:39Speaker 4: in the state, Big Buck State, on some public ground
- 8:43Speaker 4: and you had gone into a place to hunt that
- 8:47Speaker 4: we had a cell came on, but you run a
- 8:49Speaker 4: different area of property and you had a bad hunt.
- 8:52Speaker 4: While you're in there, you just barely heard like a
- 8:55Speaker 4: deer snort, wheeze or something.
- 8:56Speaker 5: From what I remember, it.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Didn't see a lot and long the on cell cam
- 9:01Speaker 4: slim gems over there walking around stalking around with an
- 9:04Speaker 4: aeronaux throughout the whole property, you know. And it's like
- 9:08Speaker 4: if you didn't have the camera data, like take sale
- 9:11Speaker 4: cam out of it, just in general, you didn't have
- 9:13Speaker 4: camera data like you got to look at you would
- 9:15Speaker 4: think that maybe your access was wrong.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Or there was no deer on the property or YadA YadA.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Because you have that data, then you know like, oh,
- 9:23Speaker 4: here is the extra factor that was unknown until we
- 9:26Speaker 4: looked at the camera data. So pretty cool thing. And
- 9:28Speaker 4: this is the time of year to get that stuff out.
- 9:31Speaker 4: I know a lot of people like to get cameras out,
- 9:34Speaker 4: get velvet pictures and all that, and they're awesome believing.
- 9:37Speaker 4: One of the cool things about trail cameras is just
- 9:39Speaker 4: the pictures themselves. It doesn't matter, like I literally would
- 9:43Speaker 4: hang a trail camera in a place I wasn't allowed
- 9:45Speaker 4: to hunt just to if it had cool deer on
- 9:47Speaker 4: it to look at the pictures up.
- 9:48Speaker 2: You know.
- 9:49Speaker 4: But this time of year as a hunter, late September
- 9:53Speaker 4: is the time to go get cameras in the woods
- 9:55Speaker 4: because if you have a fairly efficient camera with fairly
- 9:58Speaker 4: efficient settings and good I mean, you can put a
- 10:02Speaker 4: camera out now as long as it's not over like
- 10:04Speaker 4: a bait station, and that thing will run for almost
- 10:07Speaker 4: the whole season probably, Yeah, And so you you can
- 10:11Speaker 4: get all that data and you don't have to go
- 10:13Speaker 4: in there at a more crucial time like say like
- 10:16Speaker 4: an October twenty first or something where a deer is
- 10:19Speaker 4: really starting us to establish his you know, his core
- 10:22Speaker 4: area for the fall. You don't want to go in
- 10:25Speaker 4: there and mess that up real bad.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Sure, And we have We've got a guest today that's
- 10:30Speaker 2: going to talk about the same thing where you know,
- 10:34Speaker 2: as I've spoken with him in the past week, we've
- 10:36Speaker 2: heard that or I've heard that he's looking at and
- 10:39Speaker 2: seeing some of these deer in areas already that generally
- 10:43Speaker 2: are more of a rut area and so a little
- 10:47Speaker 2: less in that's kind of summertime pattern. So you get
- 10:50Speaker 2: that stuff out now, you start to pick those deer
- 10:52Speaker 2: up as they transition into those areas, and it's pretty
- 10:56Speaker 2: low you know, it's it's it's a low risk situation
- 11:01Speaker 2: for you as far as spooking deer and those kind
- 11:03Speaker 2: of things, you know.
- 11:03Speaker 4: So yeah, well, dude, the second best thing you can
- 11:07Speaker 4: do to understand what deer doing is to put your
- 11:11Speaker 4: truck cameras out this time of the year.
- 11:13Speaker 5: But the first, the.
- 11:14Speaker 4: Bestest thing you can do right now is listen to
- 11:18Speaker 4: the Reugh Fresh report from across the country.
- 11:20Speaker 2: So, Tyler, I'm not there because I am out.
- 11:23Speaker 5: Hunting elk in New Mexico. You did all these interviews
- 11:26Speaker 5: this week.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Things for doing that, man, and who did you talk to? Man?
- 11:29Speaker 2: We have a slew of dudes from all over in
- 11:32Speaker 2: different areas of the US. So I'm really excited to
- 11:36Speaker 2: bring forward a couple of these guys. For one, We've
- 11:40Speaker 2: got Grant Forny with the everyday Outdoorsman. He's out in Maryland.
- 11:44Speaker 2: He's had some success and we'll hear from him out
- 11:47Speaker 2: in the Maryland area if you head south. We got
- 11:50Speaker 2: our buddy Justin Henry in Florida. He's going to talk
- 11:53Speaker 2: about Florida a little bit. A place that is so
- 11:56Speaker 2: foreign to a lot of US deer hunters, but they're
- 11:59Speaker 2: you know, so they're may be some of the hardest
- 12:01Speaker 2: deer to hunt if I was taking a guess in
- 12:05Speaker 2: the US. So definitely some things to be learned out
- 12:08Speaker 2: in that area. We've also got Nate Crick who is
- 12:13Speaker 2: with Identical Drawl. They've been out in Kansas a little bit.
- 12:16Speaker 2: He's actually heading out there right now to make sure
- 12:20Speaker 2: everything's in order out there, so they're hunting Kansas. And
- 12:24Speaker 2: we also have Adam Keith from Missouri. Adam has had
- 12:29Speaker 2: some really awesome success. Those guys do a bunch of
- 12:33Speaker 2: management stuff with Landing Legacy and they're just good dudes.
- 12:36Speaker 2: We enjoy hanging out with them. Got to do a
- 12:38Speaker 2: turkey video with those guys or Turkey Hunt that turned
- 12:41Speaker 2: into a really cool video. A couple of years back
- 12:44Speaker 2: in the spring. They've got a cool place up there.
- 12:46Speaker 2: So that's who we're hearing from this week. Man.
- 12:49Speaker 6: Maybe it's a good diverse group from across the country.
- 12:51Speaker 5: You know, seasons are starting to open up in more
- 12:53Speaker 5: and more.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Places, and I kind of say this every week, but
- 12:57Speaker 4: we're getting closer and closer to deer season.
- 12:59Speaker 7: Man.
- 13:00Speaker 8: It's season in some places right now will be loved
- 13:02Speaker 8: for you and I are chasing white tails.
- 13:05Speaker 4: But for the hont let's talk to these guys right
- 13:08Speaker 4: quick and see what they have to tell us.
- 13:10Speaker 2: All right now on the phone, I've got Grant forty
- 13:13Speaker 2: with the every day outdoorsman. What's going on, Grant?
- 13:17Speaker 9: Not too much, Tyle or just really enjoying the beginning
- 13:20Speaker 9: of hunting season here and uh looking forward to what's
- 13:24Speaker 9: to come.
- 13:24Speaker 2: To Yeah, it seems like it's been pretty good for
- 13:26Speaker 2: you so far. What's it like hunting in Maryland? Man?
- 13:29Speaker 2: Is it big woods or what are you mostly getting
- 13:32Speaker 2: after there?
- 13:33Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 13:34Speaker 9: So in Maryland there's a little bit of everything. What
- 13:36Speaker 9: I've been hunting is more more like rolling hills, you know,
- 13:43Speaker 9: pretty good mixture of wood lots and big fields. Been
- 13:48Speaker 9: hunting one piece of public with a lot of crop
- 13:53Speaker 9: fields on private that brought up to the public.
- 13:56Speaker 5: That's been pretty good. And that corn, yeah, corn and bean.
- 14:02Speaker 9: And then there's also a pretty good amount of oaks
- 14:07Speaker 9: on that public as well, So there's some pretty good
- 14:10Speaker 9: oak flats to hunt hunt deer coming into.
- 14:13Speaker 2: So have you seen that oaks drop?
- 14:16Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 14:16Speaker 9: Yeah, the oaks are dropping, and you know, to be honest,
- 14:21Speaker 9: the hunting I have had a little bit of success.
- 14:24Speaker 5: The hunting has actually been a little tough.
- 14:26Speaker 9: The deer movement has been pretty slow these first two
- 14:28Speaker 9: weekends of the season.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Opening weekend, I didn't even.
- 14:32Speaker 9: Lay eyes on a deer and pre sits and then
- 14:36Speaker 9: this past weekend had a slow sit again. Friday evening,
- 14:39Speaker 9: didn't see anything, and then Saturday I finally saw a
- 14:43Speaker 9: couple of deer and I was able. I was actually
- 14:45Speaker 9: able to connect on two does Saturday, so I was
- 14:49Speaker 9: happy to fill the freezer.
- 14:50Speaker 5: But really, I can't say that the deer movement has
- 14:53Speaker 5: been awesome.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, well that's cool, man. It's good to let
- 14:57Speaker 2: an arrow lace. Man. I still get pumped on a shoot, doze,
- 15:00Speaker 2: know what I mean?
- 15:01Speaker 5: Oh? Yeah, it was fun.
- 15:04Speaker 2: So deer movement's been slow now is that because the
- 15:10Speaker 2: weather's stagnant. I know there's been some hurricanes kind of
- 15:13Speaker 2: heading up the East coast and that kind of thing,
- 15:14Speaker 2: or or is it just something else that you think.
- 15:17Speaker 9: Yeah, So I think opening weekend there, the first few
- 15:21Speaker 9: days of the season that I hunted, it was the
- 15:24Speaker 9: warm weather.
- 15:25Speaker 5: We had really warm temps, probably some.
- 15:28Speaker 9: Of the warmest tempts I've I've ever hunted in, So
- 15:30Speaker 9: I think that really had the movement shut down during daylight,
- 15:34Speaker 9: and so I think that that's what was causing it
- 15:37Speaker 9: to be pretty slow. And then the temps last week
- 15:42Speaker 9: we had a pretty decent temp drop, which had me
- 15:45Speaker 9: really excited for the weekend that I just hunted. And
- 15:51Speaker 9: it seemed like the hunting pressure then is what made
- 15:56Speaker 9: it slow. This happened even though I did connect on
- 16:00Speaker 9: for basically the only two year that I saw. I
- 16:02Speaker 9: think the opening week hunting pressure was having its effect
- 16:07Speaker 9: and that was kind of slowing it down even with
- 16:10Speaker 9: the cooler tempts that came in. So you know, kind
- 16:13Speaker 9: of had kind of had a lot of things working
- 16:15Speaker 9: against me there the first two weekends, but you know, I.
- 16:18Speaker 5: Was happy to still be able to fill the freezer
- 16:20Speaker 5: a little bit.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Yeah. Are you able to run trail cameras out there?
- 16:24Speaker 5: Yeah? Yeah, I do run some cameras down there in Maryland.
- 16:28Speaker 5: The cameras have been they've been okay.
- 16:30Speaker 9: You know, there's there's a little bit of daylight movement
- 16:33Speaker 9: here and there, but nothing crazy. Not a lot for
- 16:35Speaker 9: mature bucks. I'll say that it's been mostly dozen fauns in.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Daylight, gotcha. Okay, So in the next week, our pattern
- 16:45Speaker 2: is going to stay similar based off weather, moon, you
- 16:47Speaker 2: know whatever, or do you expect them to stay similar
- 16:51Speaker 2: or do you expect them to potentially change a little bit.
- 16:55Speaker 9: I think it's gonna be pretty similar next week to
- 17:00Speaker 9: what it is now.
- 17:01Speaker 5: The weather is going to be pretty much the same.
- 17:04Speaker 9: It looks like the temperatures, it looks like maybe this
- 17:09Speaker 9: weekend there's a very slight temperature drop with a little
- 17:12Speaker 9: bit of rain coming in, so that could make it
- 17:14Speaker 9: good right after that. But I think for the most
- 17:17Speaker 9: part it's I would expect the dear movement to be
- 17:19Speaker 9: pretty similar. Hunting pressure is going to pretty much stay
- 17:23Speaker 9: the same here throughout the middle of September, and uh,
- 17:27Speaker 9: you know, at the temperature with us not really getting
- 17:28Speaker 9: a major temp drop, I think I think it's probably
- 17:31Speaker 9: going to be pretty similar movement to what we're seeing
- 17:33Speaker 9: right now.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Okay, So on a scale of one to ten, what
- 17:35Speaker 2: would you rate the buck movement to be like next week?
- 17:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll probably give it a four.
- 17:42Speaker 9: You know, probably probably a little bit below average, just
- 17:47Speaker 9: with the heavy hunting pressure in the areas that I'm hunting,
- 17:50Speaker 9: and then you know, those temperatures that are going to
- 17:54Speaker 9: be pretty stagnant.
- 17:55Speaker 5: You know, not only are.
- 17:56Speaker 9: They are they a little bit higher than we prefer,
- 17:59Speaker 9: but it's also of like we're gonna have pretty consistent
- 18:01Speaker 9: temperatures here for several days in a row.
- 18:03Speaker 5: So I don't think that's going to help us. I'll
- 18:06Speaker 5: give it a four.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Okay. Well, I appreciate the update, man, Yeah, yeah, I
- 18:12Speaker 2: hope you guys have a great, great season.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Man.
- 18:14Speaker 2: I hope you guys are able to put down a
- 18:16Speaker 2: few Maryland Bucks and wherever else you end up. And
- 18:18Speaker 2: I'm sure we're going to talk to you again at
- 18:20Speaker 2: some point.
- 18:20Speaker 9: Man.
- 18:20Speaker 2: I appreciate the time.
- 18:22Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, well, I appreciate you having me on, Tyler,
- 18:25Speaker 9: and good luck to you guys this.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Year too, Thanks man, Sea Grant see you later, all right,
- 18:30Speaker 2: I'm talking to Justin Henry right now. He's out in Florida. Justin,
- 18:34Speaker 2: we had you on last year. What's been going on
- 18:35Speaker 2: since then?
- 18:38Speaker 3: Not a whole lot, you know, just as well as
- 18:41Speaker 3: I know, being from Texas.
- 18:42Speaker 5: Heat, heat and more heat.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Yeah, that's been man. I'll tell you what. The last
- 18:47Speaker 2: few days here in the mornings, I've almost had to
- 18:49Speaker 2: put a sweatshirt on. But it's been you know, eighty
- 18:53Speaker 2: late or high eighties to low nineties. The last few
- 18:56Speaker 2: days is high. So it's it's crazy that that feels good,
- 19:00Speaker 2: but it does, you know. So you guys have had
- 19:04Speaker 2: some heat and you've been out hunting a little bit
- 19:06Speaker 2: in Florida, which is a such a weird state for
- 19:09Speaker 2: most of us other people to think about deer hunting,
- 19:11Speaker 2: but you guys, you live in it, and you know
- 19:13Speaker 2: what's going on. What were you hunting as far as
- 19:16Speaker 2: patterns go in the last week or so.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Zone C, which is Central Florida open up this past
- 19:23Speaker 3: weekend and I pretty much was on the food basically
- 19:28Speaker 3: finding those dropping acorns, set up and runn an oak
- 19:32Speaker 3: flat outside of some thick areas pal meadows and stuff, and.
- 19:38Speaker 5: Hoping to catch them.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Yeah, so the the what kind of oaks are they?
- 19:42Speaker 2: Are they big acorns or small ones?
- 19:45Speaker 3: They are small acorns, Yeah, I would equivalent it to
- 19:50Speaker 3: about half the size of what you get out in
- 19:52Speaker 3: the Midwest.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and these are like swampy areas, I guess.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Yes, I mean pretty much you can get into your
- 20:00Speaker 3: er null areas where you're palmetto flats and stuff like that,
- 20:03Speaker 3: your swamps down there by your cypresses and stuff like that,
- 20:08Speaker 3: there's water. We've had a good amount of rain the
- 20:10Speaker 3: past couple of weeks and stayed dried for so long.
- 20:12Speaker 3: But we've had a decent amount of rain. So uh,
- 20:15Speaker 3: a lot of the ditches and the swamp areas are
- 20:18Speaker 3: a little bit higher than expecting.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Gotcha. So the the oaks are I guess in that
- 20:23Speaker 2: drier country they swamp oaks or are they like a
- 20:26Speaker 2: sand post oak that's an upland or what what do you?
- 20:29Speaker 3: You got some scrub scrub oaks so you're yeah, basically
- 20:33Speaker 3: scrub oaks or laurel oaks are starting to drop.
- 20:35Speaker 2: A little bit.
- 20:38Speaker 5: And what I call like a live oak.
- 20:43Speaker 3: M No, I haven't really seen any of acorns on
- 20:46Speaker 3: that really, just the laurels and like you said, like
- 20:48Speaker 3: a swamp oak.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Got okay, So what what's the weather going to be like?
- 20:54Speaker 2: And are you good at guys gonna get I know
- 20:56Speaker 2: that there's been as hurricane season, so things change a lot.
- 20:59Speaker 2: You know. Is is there any cold front in the
- 21:03Speaker 2: future that you see.
- 21:05Speaker 3: I heard a rumor that it might be like sixty
- 21:10Speaker 3: seven Saturday morning. All right, I'm stoked about that. That's
- 21:15Speaker 3: about for the morning time. That's about a ten degree
- 21:17Speaker 3: swing the way it's been lately, So I mean, I
- 21:19Speaker 3: feel like that's enough to induce a little bit movement.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Yeah, so you know you have weird ruts down there?
- 21:26Speaker 2: Is that gonna I mean, I don't know when you're
- 21:30Speaker 2: hunting Central Florida. I don't know when the rut is,
- 21:32Speaker 2: But is that something that could kind of start the rut? Essentially?
- 21:38Speaker 3: Probably not so much with this weather, and given the
- 21:42Speaker 3: time of year Central Florida is usually about mid October
- 21:47Speaker 3: is when it really starts to fire up.
- 21:49Speaker 5: In my neck of the woods.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Now South Florida being zoned A, they are down way
- 21:57Speaker 3: south there.
- 21:58Speaker 5: They've been running down there.
- 22:00Speaker 3: They were they actually are running before the season even
- 22:03Speaker 3: opens down in South Florida. But We're still about about
- 22:06Speaker 3: a month away.
- 22:07Speaker 5: For it to start cracking up.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Got So, in the next week, if you're to go
- 22:12Speaker 2: out hunting, like say that you're gonna go hunt that
- 22:14Speaker 2: that coal front this weekend, are you are you gonna
- 22:17Speaker 2: change what you hunt them on, the patterns that you
- 22:19Speaker 2: hunt them on, or what do you think?
- 22:21Speaker 5: No? No, I think I'm gonna stick to the food.
- 22:24Speaker 3: The acorns should still be dropping here, uh for quite
- 22:28Speaker 3: a while, and uh, I think I'm just gonna stick
- 22:30Speaker 3: tight to the food for the time being.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Okay, cool. So with that, with that coming in, uh,
- 22:36Speaker 2: if you had to rate buck movement on a scale
- 22:38Speaker 2: of one to ten for for this next week, especially
- 22:42Speaker 2: considering that coal front coming in, is it gonna jump up?
- 22:44Speaker 2: And what's that number gonna be?
- 22:47Speaker 3: I think I'm still gonna give it about a three
- 22:49Speaker 3: to a four, uh, depending on the area.
- 22:53Speaker 5: I think.
- 22:54Speaker 3: I think it's generally gonna be on the same side,
- 22:57Speaker 3: kind of on the slow side for the time being.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Gotcha. Well, I appreciate the report, justin, and I hope
- 23:02Speaker 2: that you shoot one this weekend. Send us pictures if
- 23:04Speaker 2: you do, and we'll be talking to you soon. Man.
- 23:07Speaker 6: Sounds good.
- 23:08Speaker 3: Thanks Tyler.
- 23:25Speaker 2: All right, I'm here with Nate Crick of Identical Drawl. Nate,
- 23:28Speaker 2: what's been going on? Man?
- 23:30Speaker 6: Hey dude, I mean it's hunting season. Yeah, so can't complain.
- 23:34Speaker 7: Man, September's here and uh, TIMPs have been, uh pretty cool.
- 23:39Speaker 7: Uh we're we're at so it's been. It's been pretty
- 23:42Speaker 7: awesome getting out with the bow in hand and stuff
- 23:44Speaker 7: like that.
- 23:45Speaker 6: Can't complain.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Yeah. So, you know, most guys are hunting elk in September,
- 23:50Speaker 2: Guys like you and I, they spend we spent a
- 23:52Speaker 2: little more time in the deer woods. Especially September can
- 23:55Speaker 2: be really good when you get cooler temps. Uh, you've
- 23:58Speaker 2: been in Kansas and I mean, what was the weather
- 24:03Speaker 2: like when you were hunting? Was it? Was it cooler
- 24:05Speaker 2: or was it warmer?
- 24:07Speaker 6: It was cooler.
- 24:08Speaker 7: My brother and I we were actually discussing, like Opening
- 24:11Speaker 7: Day was probably the most prime opening day we've had
- 24:16Speaker 7: in as many years as we can remember.
- 24:18Speaker 6: We had a I mean there's a big temp drop
- 24:19Speaker 6: at least.
- 24:20Speaker 7: Ten to fifteen degrees from let's see the tenths, like
- 24:23Speaker 7: the ninth and tenths to the eleventh of opening Day,
- 24:27Speaker 7: and there's some precipitation with it too, so whenever you
- 24:29Speaker 7: get the big temps.
- 24:30Speaker 6: Drops in little pre sip, we get pretty excited.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:33Speaker 7: So yeah, we did hunt the opener and we saw
- 24:37Speaker 7: some deer, but it was still still you could still
- 24:41Speaker 7: tell its early season, like you really gotta I don't know,
- 24:44Speaker 7: at least in our neck of the woods, you gotta
- 24:46Speaker 7: kind of get lucky to snack on his open season bucks.
- 24:48Speaker 7: And it's I don't know, our mindset about it is
- 24:51Speaker 7: kind of just like, I mean, less.
- 24:53Speaker 6: Than two weeks ago we were glassing bucks.
- 24:55Speaker 7: In bean fields, so it's like we're gonna, we're gonna
- 24:58Speaker 7: kind of be on until.
- 24:59Speaker 6: It kind of to change.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Yeah, did uh, did you trail cameras do anything different?
- 25:04Speaker 2: Like did you see anything that was surprising with the
- 25:07Speaker 2: cooler temps that changed their patterns or anything.
- 25:11Speaker 6: I didn't really see anything. The weird thing that well,
- 25:16Speaker 6: I guess it's not weird. I feel like in a
- 25:20Speaker 6: lot of like hunting da and things like that.
- 25:23Speaker 7: Here don't hunt the mornings early season, but the bucks
- 25:26Speaker 7: that we've been hunting have been daylighting.
- 25:28Speaker 6: In the morning, so that evening are our hunt wasn't
- 25:31Speaker 6: as good as we wanted. Opening day evening and we
- 25:34Speaker 6: went back that night, but Tuesday morning.
- 25:38Speaker 7: The next morning, one of our bucks that you're chasing daylighted,
- 25:42Speaker 7: and then two days later they daylighted again in the morning.
- 25:45Speaker 6: So we were like, man, we need to be we
- 25:47Speaker 6: need to be.
- 25:48Speaker 7: Switching up our minds set a little bit about this
- 25:50Speaker 7: early season morning stuff, because our that's when our bucks
- 25:53Speaker 7: are moving.
- 25:54Speaker 6: I think I think it's I think it's coolest in
- 25:56Speaker 6: the morning because it's still in the evening it's still
- 25:59Speaker 6: dropping timp and so I think it is the coolest
- 26:01Speaker 6: in the morning.
- 26:01Speaker 7: And then I don't know, I don't know what other
- 26:04Speaker 7: things are changing at We had one of our bucks
- 26:08Speaker 7: was actually still vulve full velvet my opening day and
- 26:12Speaker 7: then two days later he had lost all of it.
- 26:14Speaker 7: So they're definitely they're definitely changing for the season.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Yeah, so what have you just been hunting them on
- 26:21Speaker 2: food or what patterns you've been hunting them on?
- 26:24Speaker 7: Yeah, pretty much hunting them on food. We have half
- 26:28Speaker 7: of our cameras are still kind of in the summer
- 26:29Speaker 7: mode of on some field edges, some food things like that.
- 26:32Speaker 7: And then actually before we did have an ELK tag
- 26:37Speaker 7: early September, before we did that. We moved some of
- 26:39Speaker 7: our cameras around you some just some more late October
- 26:43Speaker 7: November stuff like drainages, stuff where we're catching pinch points.
- 26:47Speaker 7: And we actually had one of our shooters go hit
- 26:50Speaker 7: one of those cameras and like do a little scrape
- 26:52Speaker 7: action on one of them, and I was like, that's
- 26:55Speaker 7: that's where that's where we need the rest of our cameras.
- 26:57Speaker 6: Because in the last at least in the last five day.
- 27:00Speaker 7: A lot of our food cameras have become a lot
- 27:02Speaker 7: slower just get movement.
- 27:04Speaker 6: So we're like the bucks are still there, but they're
- 27:08Speaker 6: changing and we.
- 27:08Speaker 7: Haven't adjusted to be able to catch them on a
- 27:11Speaker 7: camera or to just just see them more in the tree.
- 27:13Speaker 6: So definitely need to uh to do some of that.
- 27:17Speaker 2: So going forward, are you going to be changing your
- 27:21Speaker 2: hunting setups and your cameras in this next week or
- 27:24Speaker 2: so to kind of match what do you think you're seeing?
- 27:27Speaker 6: Yeah, we we follow the food sources.
- 27:30Speaker 7: We've got some oaks on our ground, so like the
- 27:32Speaker 7: acorns are really starting to drop, so combination.
- 27:35Speaker 6: Of that and also just like hitting those heavy trails
- 27:39Speaker 6: and this is we've hunted this property for a while
- 27:41Speaker 6: so it's.
- 27:42Speaker 7: Not like a new thing that we're going to go
- 27:43Speaker 7: scalp with boots in the ground and try to find
- 27:45Speaker 7: some of that fresh sign.
- 27:46Speaker 6: We know where a lot of that is.
- 27:48Speaker 7: We'll still try to find some of that fresh sign
- 27:50Speaker 7: in the next few weeks, but yeah, that transition really
- 27:53Speaker 7: needs to happen. Until we do that, I can expect
- 27:56Speaker 7: trail cameras to be a little slower.
- 27:58Speaker 6: But yeah, that's kind of how it will go.
- 28:00Speaker 7: And I mean the next few weeks will really, I mean,
- 28:04Speaker 7: it can only get better from here. So let's say
- 28:06Speaker 7: really start start getting consistent again. We're gonna wait for
- 28:09Speaker 7: a pretty good temp drop before we go after those
- 28:11Speaker 7: suckers again.
- 28:12Speaker 2: So yeah, cool. So in the next week, if you
- 28:16Speaker 2: had to think, based off of weather and all these
- 28:18Speaker 2: different factors and then just the change that you're seeing,
- 28:23Speaker 2: what would you rate on a scale of one to
- 28:25Speaker 2: ten your projected buck movement?
- 28:28Speaker 6: Gosh, I would I would say it'll be okay. I
- 28:34Speaker 6: bet it'll be.
- 28:34Speaker 7: Like a seven out of ten, all right, which I
- 28:37Speaker 7: feel like is pretty good for this time of the
- 28:40Speaker 7: year because it could be pretty slow.
- 28:41Speaker 6: But the temps are okay and they're gonna be dipping.
- 28:44Speaker 8: I know.
- 28:44Speaker 6: I saw again later this week they're gonna be dipping.
- 28:47Speaker 7: So honestly, like a week from now, I will I
- 28:50Speaker 7: will expect to have had the bucks were chasing the
- 28:52Speaker 7: least day I once in there, which can't complain for
- 28:55Speaker 7: late September.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Sure, awesome, Dave, Well, thanks for the reporting, Nate, and
- 28:58Speaker 2: I hope you guys have a great season. Get after
- 29:00Speaker 2: them with Kansas Shooters. Yeah, things all right. Now on
- 29:05Speaker 2: the phone, I've got Adam Keith out in Missouri. Adam,
- 29:08Speaker 2: it's been a while since I've seen you, man, but
- 29:10Speaker 2: it's good to talk to you again.
- 29:11Speaker 8: No doubt, Tyler are always a pleasure man.
- 29:13Speaker 2: So you guys are. With Landing Legacy, you have this
- 29:18Speaker 2: company that just does lives and breathes, like you know,
- 29:22Speaker 2: native landscape, right, but you do a lot of just
- 29:25Speaker 2: landscape work and a lot of wildlife work. You guys.
- 29:30Speaker 2: I've been impressed for years, have known you for a
- 29:32Speaker 2: long time now. But with just your knowledge of different
- 29:36Speaker 2: plants and different biology and all the different things, man,
- 29:39Speaker 2: so consequentially you end up killing some pretty good deer
- 29:44Speaker 2: over the years, and you've had success recently, right.
- 29:47Speaker 8: No doubt. Yeah, I'd tell you like, we're habitat restoration
- 29:51Speaker 8: with habitat management for hunting success. So we do a
- 29:54Speaker 8: lot of laying out habitat restoration that involves trying to
- 30:00Speaker 8: put a hunting strategy in place, and so you know,
- 30:03Speaker 8: when you do that, I feel like on your home farm,
- 30:06Speaker 8: that's kind of like you're supposed to be able to
- 30:09Speaker 8: hunt your own farm, but if you're in that business,
- 30:12Speaker 8: you kind of have to be laying it out in
- 30:14Speaker 8: a way that produces success. I mean I would feel
- 30:19Speaker 8: pretty like a big failure if I didn't do it correctly,
- 30:22Speaker 8: and sometimes it falls into place too good if you will.
- 30:26Speaker 8: And that was Saturday night for us, I mean first
- 30:29Speaker 8: night in the set and it came together.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Yeah, so you were what were you hunting that buck?
- 30:35Speaker 2: Like the pattern wise, what were you hunting them on?
- 30:36Speaker 2: What were you looking for him to be doing?
- 30:39Speaker 8: For me early season, I'm always trying to press against
- 30:43Speaker 8: betting as close as I can. And whether I'm pressing
- 30:46Speaker 8: against betting that is food sourced close by, that's right
- 30:50Speaker 8: next to the bedded room, or in this case, it's
- 30:54Speaker 8: one of the first scrapes that they use in the
- 30:57Speaker 8: fall where we put a ca on it and in
- 31:01Speaker 8: the fall, it's like, Okay, you see occasional scrape on
- 31:03Speaker 8: a field edge, but like this is the one where
- 31:05Speaker 8: they come in and they're thrashing it and they're working
- 31:07Speaker 8: it up, and it's bare ground and you don't do
- 31:09Speaker 8: anything to make it that way. They do it, and
- 31:12Speaker 8: so it's kind of like a historically good scrape. And
- 31:16Speaker 8: we know that it's very close to this buck's bedding,
- 31:20Speaker 8: and so we just put the time in with the
- 31:22Speaker 8: right wind and lo and behold, he was the first
- 31:24Speaker 8: deer on the field.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Yeah, so the scrape, now, is that something that you
- 31:29Speaker 2: see it it gets opened up because of the diurnal
- 31:32Speaker 2: period or is there a weather uh function there that
- 31:36Speaker 2: happens or why is that? Why does that all of
- 31:38Speaker 2: a sudden become a thing as soon as.
- 31:41Speaker 8: They start shedding velvet. It seems like that scrape starts
- 31:44Speaker 8: starts to heat up.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Okay, And I don't.
- 31:47Speaker 8: Know if it's because you know, there's a lot of
- 31:49Speaker 8: theories with this, but it's on the high one of
- 31:51Speaker 8: the highest elevations on the entire farm, and it's an
- 31:54Speaker 8: open field that's kind of brushy, and it just feels
- 31:59Speaker 8: bucky when you get there in the fall, and I
- 32:02Speaker 8: don't know if because it's so high that when it
- 32:06Speaker 8: gets work so consistently that the scent of that scrape
- 32:09Speaker 8: just drifts down all around and so deer constantly smelling
- 32:13Speaker 8: it and coming.
- 32:13Speaker 2: To check it.
- 32:14Speaker 8: That's kind of been my idea. So it's kind of
- 32:16Speaker 8: like a humongous communication point.
- 32:19Speaker 2: I got you, man, That's that's pretty cool theory. I
- 32:22Speaker 2: love random kind of you know, obscure theories like that
- 32:26Speaker 2: that make a lot of sense still because those are
- 32:28Speaker 2: the you know, you can talk about, you know, betting
- 32:31Speaker 2: and bed to food all day, but everybody talks about that.
- 32:34Speaker 2: It's cool when you can see stuff and be like, oh,
- 32:36Speaker 2: I wonder about this. You know, in case, he's really
- 32:38Speaker 2: good at that stuff. He's a very creative individual.
- 32:41Speaker 8: But yeah, for me, even watching trail cameras, one of
- 32:45Speaker 8: the cool things that you see is like I'll see
- 32:48Speaker 8: a three and a half year old come in and
- 32:49Speaker 8: work that scrape and then he'll walk off and it's
- 32:52Speaker 8: like five minutes later, here comes another buck and he's
- 32:55Speaker 8: checking it, and I'm like, in theory, I'm always like
- 32:58Speaker 8: they're laying around somewhere to where they can either see
- 33:02Speaker 8: a buck going to it or smell it or something.
- 33:06Speaker 8: But it seems like they just almost take a ticket
- 33:09Speaker 8: to go take their turn at the scrape sometimes in
- 33:11Speaker 8: the fall and especially early in the fall, and we've
- 33:14Speaker 8: seen it in the last couple of years, so we
- 33:16Speaker 8: just had to capitalize on it Saturday.
- 33:18Speaker 2: That's awesome, man, congrats on that going forward. If you
- 33:22Speaker 2: were to go hunting next week or this next week,
- 33:24Speaker 2: this coming week, like what would you change anything at
- 33:28Speaker 2: all or would you kind of stay with that same
- 33:31Speaker 2: scrape pattern that's near bedding or would you go would
- 33:34Speaker 2: you move to food or what would you do there?
- 33:36Speaker 8: Well, here in the Ozark Mountains, they're starting to be
- 33:39Speaker 8: more and more acrons dropping, especially white oaks, And for
- 33:42Speaker 8: our farm, we knew it was a ticking time was
- 33:46Speaker 8: ticking where they're going to shift from that scrape being
- 33:49Speaker 8: consistent on it to shifting more into chasing white oak acres.
- 33:53Speaker 8: And so for us moving forward, the strategy would be
- 33:58Speaker 8: still trying to find those acrens that are dropping close
- 34:01Speaker 8: to betting. And so you know, we've got a couple
- 34:04Speaker 8: of cameras right now on some big white oaks field
- 34:09Speaker 8: edge white oaks that are next to a really dense
- 34:12Speaker 8: area on an east slope and there was deer in
- 34:14Speaker 8: there at seven fifteen this morning, mature box. And so
- 34:17Speaker 8: for us, it's like, okay, we still are going to
- 34:21Speaker 8: use the betting as our focal point, but we're still
- 34:24Speaker 8: trying to find those almost enticers to draw them out
- 34:27Speaker 8: in daylight, whether that be a scrape, or whether that
- 34:29Speaker 8: be a per Simon grove, or whether that be a
- 34:31Speaker 8: food plot or in many cases right now it's white
- 34:34Speaker 8: oak acres.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, that makes sense. So if you were to
- 34:38Speaker 2: if you were to rate what you assume buck movement
- 34:40Speaker 2: would be like based off of any variables you can
- 34:43Speaker 2: come up with in the next week, on a scale
- 34:46Speaker 2: of one to ten, what do you think it's going
- 34:48Speaker 2: to be?
- 34:50Speaker 5: Probably a seven.
- 34:51Speaker 8: I feel like it's a pretty good right now.
- 34:52Speaker 5: Looking at the weather forecast.
- 34:54Speaker 8: You know, it's still mid September to light a part
- 34:56Speaker 8: of September, but it's cooler. It's a little bit almost
- 35:02Speaker 8: historically cooler than normal, and over the last couple of
- 35:05Speaker 8: weeks has been really hot, and this week looks pretty cool,
- 35:08Speaker 8: chances of some rain. I mean, if I still had
- 35:11Speaker 8: a tag, I'd be out there.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Awesome, dude, Well, thanks for the report Adam, and I
