Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Sean does give solid advice on the subject we were just talking about.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: The woman who called and said, Hey, my excuse me, my mother-in-law is not the most financially stable person.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Husband had died.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: And now my my husband says, I'll help my mom.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: And I think that's you're gonna want to.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Of course you're doing it.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: But then there's a lot of things.
- 0:19SPEAKER_01: Well we're not talking helping her make sure the lawn's mowed every week.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: No, this is just financial help.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: And and she said something, you know, I don't want to stretch us and our future by helping his mom.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: So where do you draw the line on this?
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: And I think Sean gives some solid advice.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: It doesn't fix everything, but it's a start.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: He says they should talk to the office at the aging.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: That's gonna help with some of the, you know, medical stuff.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: That might help you make a plan.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: And there's other things that they something mom wasn't really good at her entire life or her husband's life.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: And then this one came into our text line saying on that subject of the mother-in-law, I think she should still work at least part-time.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Most elderly people are still working.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, if she's in good health, that's a smart move.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Do something.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: Um, I've said this for years with people that retire.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: You see somebody retire and they're like, Well, I'm not doing anything, and then they're dead in a year.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: You know, it's like, no, keep yourself busy.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Yes, and I know it seems so invasive to start putting a handle on your mother-in-law's finances.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Why, though, when she made no plans and has nothing, exactly.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Except for the social security that's coming in.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: And that's exactly why you have to have your hands in there.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Because if not, you guys are gonna be paying for everything, or she's gonna be homeless.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: That's what I think.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Or you're gonna have to sell her house, and whatever profit comes for that, she's living with you.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: She's living with you.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: And maybe, maybe that's an option down the line, you know, if she gets maybe of not good health.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: But it sounds like this mother-in-law is in pretty decent condition.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: But making not great financial choices.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: And listen, can I also say this?
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: You don't have to go into your late years with millions of dollars, you know, uh set aside for after you go away, like Allie's parents.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Um that's just overly prepared.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: You just need to have uh a little bit of a plan.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: I am watching this unfold right now in my house with Tiffany's mom, who had no plan.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: No plan whatsoever.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Now she passed.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: She's not alive and needing help still.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Right, but then you get the wonderful job of paying bills that, you know, might have been uh an old NISEG bill or a phone bill or whatever.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Things that you aren't expecting to pay either, then I'm sure you're robbing Peter to pay, Paul in your own household.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: Well, and you know, eventually it may end up working itself out where, you know, once they figure out like a retirement or whatever is sitting out there that was never arranged properly, uh, you know, then okay, that that that may come back.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: But you're right.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry, I live in I live in a world where, you know what?
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: I gotta pay NISEG this month and next month and the month after, and I can't wait for six months for that money to come back.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: I gotta, I gotta give a little shout out for something that I just saw, and I'm really interested in this too, is because you had just said that you're kind of going through this with Tiffany's family.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: There's something at the Clemens Center, let me find it.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: It's next month, it's in November, and I know you're dealing with some stuff right now, and so is this listener, but it's called I'm Dead.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Now what?
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: End of life planning QA session.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: You never know really what to do.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, for Tiffany's family, that's not gonna help.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: But uh for everybody else.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: But this woman that just called, and for everyone else, even for me, I mean, not that I make anything, but uh, shouldn't I have some sort of plan so you can you can reap the benefits of my paycheck, Scott?
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: I just was gonna I was gonna complete uh I was gonna commit complete fraud and just basically say you were still alive.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Right, and I'm one of your 28,000 vacations, and I was gonna just say play old clips.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, play old clips.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: I gotta laugh at you somewhere.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: And uh I'll just I'll be like, yeah, keep paying her, but the direct deposit actually goes to my direct deposit.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: She got a new bank account.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: I I just figure, you know, I mean, listen, if all these people can, you know, steal food stamps in bath every single week and I see 'em on the news, then I'm I'm gonna be able to go a good eight months of collecting your paycheck, just saying.
