- 0:00SPEAKER_00: What an awesome morning it has been.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Would you agree?
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: And this has been awesome for what?
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Children singing,
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: theater with costumes,
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: and a story that has inspired generations for nearly 2,000 years.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: This morning truly has been an all-inducing morning.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: There is some new research.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: It's out from King's College, London.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: And it regards the experience of awe, of amazement.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And they did a study of participants who were viewing art and
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: paintings and those kinds of things in museums.
- 0:58And they recognized that when people were struck with all of
- 1:03these incredible works
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: of art,
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: that the level of stress hormones in their body dropped 22% on average.
- 1:16And the markers of inflammation in their bodies dropped even
- 1:21more deeply.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: And their heart rhythms indicated greater relaxation.
- 1:28So,
- 1:29what they learned was that the experience of all clinically
- 1:36brings peace into our lives.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Now, Joseph...
- 1:43The man that we heard about this morning in our story was in
- 1:48serious need of peace.
- 1:52We just heard the story of how he was so stressed out because
- 1:57he had heard that
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Mary,
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: his engaged wife,
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: well,
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: she was pregnant.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: that he hadn't had anything to do with it,
- 2:08which of course would have created an immense amount of stress
- 2:12and anxiety in his
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: life.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: But after he had considered what he was going to do,
- 2:21Matthew chapter 1 says that an angel of the Lord appeared to
- 2:25him in a dream and
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: said,
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Joseph,
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Well, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Because he will save his people from their sins.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Now, just think.
- 2:57for a moment what Joseph would have experienced waking up after
- 3:04that dream.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: I believe it would have been extreme awe,
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: amazement about what he had just heard and experienced.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And from the study that we just heard about,
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: clinically,
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: that would have reduced his stress and anxiety
- 3:26giving him peace in the situation and providing him with a
- 3:32sense of what I am
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: calling this morning,
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: we-ness.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: That experience of God present with him in a very,
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: very difficult situation transformed his solitary sensibility
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: into an awestruck experience of we-ness.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: God with us.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Emmanuel.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Jesus in that moment.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And he names it, and he names his newborn son.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: That is what happens in the presence of God for Joseph.
- 4:23And that is what can happen when we,
- 4:26too,
- 4:27are all struck in the presence of God.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: We, too, can say, Emmanuel, God is with us.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: We can proclaim a we, a we,
- 4:44And all,
- 4:45we can proclaim that we are no longer alone in our stressful
- 4:51days.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: As we go from this place having been in the presence of God,
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: may we too lead in awe,
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: proclaiming Emmanuel,
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Jesus,
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: God is with us.
