- 4:59Speaker 2: Yes, ma'am?
- 5:00Speaker 3: About me all right?
- 5:02Speaker 9: And to see tell us a little bit about yourself.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Well, I am Michelle Cobb. I just have just turned
- 5:10Speaker 2: fifty seven. My birthday was just last week August fifteenth,
- 5:14Speaker 2: and I am. I am a Charleston resident by way
- 5:22Speaker 2: of Bronx, New York, the proud mother of two sons,
- 5:27Speaker 2: and a mimi to two beautiful what I call them
- 5:31Speaker 2: my grand divas.
- 5:33Speaker 3: And I.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Lost a son to gun violence back in twenty sixteen,
- 5:41Speaker 2: which is my why, my motivation for the books that
- 5:46Speaker 2: I have written thus far. And I'm a life coach
- 5:51Speaker 2: who has turned who has touched many vives through the
- 5:55Speaker 2: work I have done in the community. Part of that
- 5:59Speaker 2: work includes the three books that I have written, It
- 6:02Speaker 2: Could Easily Happen to You, which is the memoir about
- 6:06Speaker 2: my son and good Grief Coaching, and that's a grief journal.
- 6:12Speaker 2: And then I have my new children's book newly released
- 6:16Speaker 2: in May of this year, The Blue in You Yes,
- 6:24Speaker 2: And I am the owner and CEO of I Am
- 6:32Speaker 2: His Voice, which is in my son's memory. And I
- 6:39Speaker 2: am truly inspired by one of my favorite quotes from
- 6:42Speaker 2: Maya Angelou. My mission in life is not merely to survive,
- 6:48Speaker 2: but to thrive, and to do so with some passion,
- 6:52Speaker 2: some compassion, some humor, and some style. And that is me.
- 6:59Speaker 9: In my I say, you are doing it all right, now,
- 7:02Speaker 9: all of it now, and crazy that your birthday and
- 7:08Speaker 9: my aunt's birthday is on the xact same day. If
- 7:15Speaker 9: you see what she got on here with her purple
- 7:18Speaker 9: and sparkling, you would say the same thing.
- 7:20Speaker 5: My favorite color.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I love purple.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Are you sure? My family remember hitting.
- 7:29Speaker 9: You know somehow, especially in South Carolina.
- 7:37Speaker 3: So we know you're why and that is beautiful?
- 7:42Speaker 2: Yes, who.
- 7:45Speaker 3: We understand it's children's books.
- 7:47Speaker 9: Why do you feel that this was a It was
- 7:50Speaker 9: great to write a children's books that they can relate to,
- 7:54Speaker 9: because I have to admit, I see and you know
- 7:57Speaker 9: where we live at it's like almost.
- 7:59Speaker 3: An every day occurring for somebody to get killed.
- 8:01Speaker 9: And you see the adults, but I really think people
- 8:04Speaker 9: forget that.
- 8:05Speaker 3: You know, these little people have feelings too. Yeah, so
- 8:09Speaker 3: I thank you for writing that book. But how did
- 8:12Speaker 3: you come to the concept of making one just for children?
- 8:17Speaker 5: Well?
- 8:17Speaker 2: I felt like because I feel like I'm since I
- 8:22Speaker 2: wasn't able to save my own child, that I want
- 8:25Speaker 2: to be able to save the lives of others. And
- 8:28Speaker 2: why not start at the young tender ages of you know, nine,
- 8:34Speaker 2: when they're young and still you know, have a you know,
- 8:39Speaker 2: they just have a need and a knack for everything,
- 8:42Speaker 2: to learn everything that they could possibly learn. So I'm like,
- 8:45Speaker 2: you know, no time like the present, so why not
- 8:51Speaker 2: me try to reach out to them, you know, because
- 8:55Speaker 2: my focus is from the it's for all readers, but
- 8:57Speaker 2: my focus of nine year olds, the fort nine, the
- 9:00Speaker 2: fourteen year olds, because you know, they're so impressionable at
- 9:03Speaker 2: that age, and I like, if I could, you know,
- 9:08Speaker 2: just reach one of them with my message, because since
- 9:11Speaker 2: I wasn't able to save my own, start young, Start
- 9:15Speaker 2: young when they're the most impressionable, you know. So that
- 9:19Speaker 2: was really my motivation because my son, he was Brandon,
- 9:22Speaker 2: he was very misunderstood and growing up he always felt
- 9:26Speaker 2: like the black sheep. So that's pretty much the focus
- 9:32Speaker 2: of my book, like children feeling misunderstood and like the
- 9:35Speaker 2: black sheep, feeling excluded from things.
- 9:39Speaker 9: And I love that age group because somewhere we call
- 9:43Speaker 9: it where I work at because I work at a
- 9:45Speaker 9: public library.
- 9:46Speaker 3: We called them the in betweeners.
- 9:48Speaker 9: And the reason why we call that because they're not
- 9:51Speaker 9: little babies, but they are not teenagers right, and they
- 9:57Speaker 9: are always lost in the group because they really don't
- 10:01Speaker 9: know where they belong. You doing that age is brilliant,
- 10:07Speaker 9: Like I love it. So tell us a little bit
- 10:11Speaker 9: about the actual story, well.
- 10:14Speaker 2: The story of the Blue in You or the story
- 10:18Speaker 2: some of the book The Blue and Yes, okay, so
- 10:21Speaker 2: the Blue in You is about this character. My main
- 10:26Speaker 2: character name is Blue. I know that's creative, but and
- 10:31Speaker 2: blue doesn't just represent the color blue. Blue represents feeling blue,
- 10:40Speaker 2: feeling less than you know, being at that young, tender,
- 10:45Speaker 2: awkward stage, feeling you know, like you're left out, and
- 10:51Speaker 2: you know you're just trying to find You're just trying
- 10:53Speaker 2: to get to know you and you find your place
- 10:56Speaker 2: where you belong. So I wrote The Blue and You
- 10:59Speaker 2: just to try to touch those and reach those children
- 11:01Speaker 2: that feel misunderstood, they feel they have, you know, anger
- 11:06Speaker 2: issues that at that awkward stage and just feeling excluded,
- 11:11Speaker 2: you know, just to let them know that, embrace your uniqueness,
- 11:17Speaker 2: whatever it is within you that makes you feel awkward
- 11:21Speaker 2: and excluded, embrace that because that's what makes you unique,
- 11:26Speaker 2: and your your awkward and your uniqueness is what makes
- 11:30Speaker 2: you truly special. And embrace that.
- 11:34Speaker 3: I love that.
- 11:35Speaker 9: I just love it a lot about back and brown
- 11:39Speaker 9: kids do not see themselves as that. And I don't
- 11:45Speaker 9: want to say this, but I really feel that sometimes
- 11:48Speaker 9: we as parents, we don't put that life into them.
- 11:52Speaker 9: And you know, we only talk about them when they're
- 11:56Speaker 9: doing bad, but when they're doing.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Good, it's like you're expected.
- 12:01Speaker 9: But even if it's expected, like you expect your food
- 12:04Speaker 9: to taste good, you still sill this taste good, so
- 12:08Speaker 9: you child to do good.
- 12:09Speaker 3: But you also want to say, you know what, you're
- 12:11Speaker 3: doing a great job.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Right, even in the bad things you have to still
- 12:16Speaker 2: like you know what, it doesn't make you any less
- 12:18Speaker 2: of a person. It's just a part something about you
- 12:22Speaker 2: that you know we have to work on. But we
- 12:24Speaker 2: all need to work So just because you have to
- 12:26Speaker 2: work on that, you know there are things as an
- 12:28Speaker 2: adult that I have to work on. So don't think,
- 12:31Speaker 2: because you know we're having this issue today, that this
- 12:34Speaker 2: defines you. And remember, you know what we do does
- 12:40Speaker 2: not define us.
- 12:43Speaker 9: You know what.
- 12:46Speaker 3: You need to come I find it so let me
- 12:51Speaker 3: ask you a question.
- 12:52Speaker 9: Okay, what was more important to you the illustrations of
- 12:57Speaker 9: the book or the actual title book?
- 13:03Speaker 2: The title of the book, because because once, once you
- 13:08Speaker 2: can see that title, then the illustrictions, you know it's
- 13:12Speaker 2: going to come. So it's the title. And for me,
- 13:16Speaker 2: the title actually helped me with the structure of the book,
- 13:21Speaker 2: not just not just the illustrations. I do my title first,
- 13:28Speaker 2: and then that and I feed from that from the title.
- 13:32Speaker 3: That is so cool. So what needs.
- 13:40Speaker 9: Do you see your book for fully.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Well, in my mind, on my mind's heart, I will say,
- 13:55Speaker 2: I feel that I would love for my book to
- 13:59Speaker 2: reach schools, for for like the counselors to be able
- 14:06Speaker 2: to have it. You know, you get those repeated little
- 14:10Speaker 2: trouble kids that get sent to the office often, you know,
- 14:16Speaker 2: for a punishment. Make them read my book The Blue
- 14:21Speaker 2: and Youth, you know, so that they can read it
- 14:26Speaker 2: and and you know, try to find which one of
- 14:28Speaker 2: the characters in the book they can relate to the most.
- 14:32Speaker 2: So yeah, punish them and make them read The Blue
- 14:34Speaker 2: and Youth. That's that's that's what I feel the need
- 14:38Speaker 2: is like to get it in schools, you know, for
- 14:41Speaker 2: those those the troubled children, and not not to not
- 14:48Speaker 2: to discipline them so much, but you know, to give
- 14:51Speaker 2: them that extra hug and coddle because nine times out
- 14:54Speaker 2: of ten, it's a root cause of why they're acting
- 14:56Speaker 2: out right.
- 14:57Speaker 9: See see I always say that, and people are like, no,
- 15:02Speaker 9: kids just act up because they act up. No, there's
- 15:04Speaker 9: a reason why. There has to be some type of reason.
- 15:10Speaker 9: And I know from my daughter. She she's nine, she's
- 15:16Speaker 9: very outspoken. Well see how she feels in the heartbeat,
- 15:20Speaker 9: but doesn't know how to say it. Like she comes
- 15:23Speaker 9: out and I think my child was born Shaw's thin
- 15:26Speaker 9: case the head doing this And I'm like, girl, keep
- 15:29Speaker 9: your head stuff.
- 15:30Speaker 3: But I had to explain to her.
- 15:32Speaker 9: I said, when you talk to someone, you talk to
- 15:35Speaker 9: them in a normal tone, they'll be able to understand
- 15:38Speaker 9: you more. And she's oh, I said, but if you
- 15:41Speaker 9: come up with their head shaken and this, it's not
- 15:45Speaker 9: gonna work.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Well, mammy, I see you do that. I was like,
- 15:54Speaker 3: see what happened was.
- 15:58Speaker 2: What's her name?
- 16:00Speaker 3: Her name is Anaya?
- 16:02Speaker 2: Tell Anaya that Miss Michelle says that she can get
- 16:07Speaker 2: more bees with honey.
- 16:11Speaker 3: I did tell her that.
- 16:12Speaker 9: You know what she told me, I don't like honey,
- 16:16Speaker 9: this is what I said.
- 16:17Speaker 3: You know what, I give up my son one for
- 16:23Speaker 3: my son is twenty one. He looking like I ain't
- 16:26Speaker 3: got nothing to do with their mom. I said, you
- 16:27Speaker 3: know what, you ain't no hope either.
- 16:30Speaker 2: On that one alone.
- 16:35Speaker 3: So how is marketing your book?
- 16:36Speaker 9: What type of methods are you using to get your
- 16:39Speaker 9: books to readers?
- 16:41Speaker 2: Well, right now relying on social media. It is on Amazon.
- 16:47Speaker 2: All my books are on Amazon. But I'm just trying
- 16:52Speaker 2: to promote, promote, promote.
- 16:54Speaker 9: They you do there you go, which is great, great
- 16:57Speaker 9: you you have a starting point and I love the
- 17:00Speaker 9: did you do that?
- 17:01Speaker 3: So I have a question. I always do this with
- 17:07Speaker 3: my authors.
- 17:08Speaker 9: But we're going to take a break because what we
- 17:11Speaker 9: do on the second half we have our fun questions.
- 17:14Speaker 9: So you guys, we're gonna take a break. We're gonna
- 17:17Speaker 9: come back. We're gonna ask me to see our fun
- 17:20Speaker 9: questions and tell you guys how you can grab your
- 17:23Speaker 9: own book.
- 17:25Speaker 3: Come back, you guys. You there, Yeah, I'm here.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Okay, I lost.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Oh she must be dropped. Okay, Well we will keep
- 17:38Speaker 3: on going. So I find.
- 17:40Speaker 9: Questions are those that we use a little bit of
- 17:43Speaker 9: social media we do a little bit of star search
- 17:46Speaker 9: and everything. Okay, So if you can have your book
- 17:52Speaker 9: narrated by any one, who would it be?
- 17:58Speaker 2: But anyone?
- 18:00Speaker 3: Mean one?
- 18:03Speaker 2: Mmm?
- 18:05Speaker 9: But if you want me to narrow it down, give
- 18:08Speaker 9: me some options. If you had a rap artist and
- 18:12Speaker 9: they can read your book, who would it be?
- 18:15Speaker 2: A rap artist and they can read my book. They're
- 18:21Speaker 2: gonna read my book or wrap my book.
- 18:24Speaker 3: They're gonna read.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Uh uh.
- 18:51Speaker 5: She's coming back.
- 18:52Speaker 4: And she said, if there was a rap artist that
- 18:55Speaker 4: you would like to read your book, m who would
- 18:59Speaker 4: you like the book?
- 19:00Speaker 5: Which frap artist with you?
- 19:04Speaker 2: Okay, thank you?
- 19:05Speaker 5: And wrap the book. Your book could be wrapped.
- 19:13Speaker 7: Hard.
- 19:16Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 19:22Speaker 5: We got some rappers that.
- 19:24Speaker 2: It's so good. It's some good rappers.
- 19:29Speaker 5: Understanding the game.
- 19:30Speaker 4: But they kept trying to come out to so ain't
- 19:32Speaker 4: no telling them what they may do, you know what
- 19:34Speaker 4: I'm saying, and what they may be trying to do
- 19:36Speaker 4: to reach back.
- 19:37Speaker 5: And then you got some I'll be watching these I'll
- 19:40Speaker 5: be watching Netflix now, y'all to net your fellow hosts.
- 19:48Speaker 4: And we was watching Shant I mean Rock Saying Rock
- 19:52Speaker 4: Saying Chanta the documentary and how she started and all
- 19:57Speaker 4: that I'm talking about she was a rap in school
- 20:00Speaker 4: work and all that.
- 20:02Speaker 5: Yeah, what.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Listen, I might I might start something.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Right, So the crazy thing as.
- 20:13Speaker 5: Listening to y'all in the background.
- 20:15Speaker 4: You know I'm from And then you know, we got
- 20:17Speaker 4: all these posts on here that up in.
- 20:21Speaker 5: New York, so we're representing on both ends. There you
- 20:24Speaker 5: go right here, there you go, don't have fun.
- 20:34Speaker 3: So what happened was I heard Ludacris do this book.
- 20:38Speaker 9: I work at the public library and there's this book
- 20:41Speaker 9: call Lama Lama.
- 20:42Speaker 3: There's a whole series of them, and he was rapping
- 20:45Speaker 3: the book. Yo.
- 20:47Speaker 9: It was awesome, Lama, it was and he never missed
- 20:52Speaker 9: a beat. He's never seen the book before and they
- 20:56Speaker 9: just gave him the book and he was at that
- 20:58Speaker 9: time his daughter was being born, so his wife was
- 21:02Speaker 9: pregnant and it was awesome.
- 21:04Speaker 3: So who would you pick?
- 21:06Speaker 2: You know, you know you said Ludicrous. He's one of
- 21:09Speaker 2: my favorites. I would love for Ludicrous to read or
- 21:13Speaker 2: wrap my what read or wrap my book the Blue
- 21:17Speaker 2: and you I'm sure he would kill it.
- 21:21Speaker 9: I would I think I would choose and I don't
- 21:27Speaker 9: know why, but I love me some d m X lord.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Yes, Lord bless him. Yes, now see holy I would
- 21:42Speaker 2: need him. I would need him to be blue.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Oh my goodness, you did it. So let me ask
- 21:58Speaker 3: you question. My next question is, if you don't have
- 22:02Speaker 3: any child.
- 22:04Speaker 9: Star be the mean character Blue, who would it be
- 22:09Speaker 9: a child star?
- 22:11Speaker 3: Mm hmm.
- 22:14Speaker 2: To be the character Blue? I don't really you mean
- 22:21Speaker 2: like now child stars?
- 22:23Speaker 9: So like he could be anybody, past present, anyone.
- 22:31Speaker 2: I don't know. It's something about it's something about Romeo.
- 22:36Speaker 2: I think I feel like he was a good masterpiece
- 22:41Speaker 2: son Romeo.
- 22:42Speaker 7: You know what.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I could see, yeah he was.
- 22:46Speaker 2: He was always a little cute kid and grew up
- 22:49Speaker 2: to be nice looking man.
- 22:51Speaker 3: So and to me, he was never blued or disrespectful.
- 22:57Speaker 2: I think he would be ideal because he seemed to
- 23:00Speaker 2: have the manners. But then a little rough around the
- 23:03Speaker 2: edges too, so that's yeah, that's bloom.
- 23:07Speaker 9: I don't think I've ever seen him out of pocket.
- 23:10Speaker 9: I really think I have never ever seen him out
- 23:15Speaker 9: of pocket. And I was gonna say, well bowe wow,
- 23:21Speaker 9: But oh.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I like Romeo better. I think I
- 23:26Speaker 2: mean nothing against you, bye wow, nothing if you happen
- 23:28Speaker 2: to see this. But I like Romeo for it because
- 23:33Speaker 2: like I said, he got he's minerable and he's just
- 23:37Speaker 2: rough around the edges. And that's that's my Carricter, that's
- 23:39Speaker 2: Bloom all the way.
- 23:41Speaker 3: You know, who else? I thought?
- 23:42Speaker 5: Who? Who?
- 23:46Speaker 3: Sammy? He did that song?
- 23:47Speaker 9: I like the way you. So is there anything that
- 23:57Speaker 9: you would love to tell us about you, your book
- 24:02Speaker 9: or even where you're planning on going in the future
