- 0:05Speaker 2: Welcome to an NFL draft hosted.
- 0:07Speaker 1: By the writers of Patriots dot com. From now until
- 0:10Speaker 1: you here the New England Patriots Swatch, the countdown is on.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Welcome to the Patriots Draft Countdown, presented by bud Light.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Welcome everybody.
- 0:20Speaker 3: We're coming to you from day four the NFL Scouting
- 0:23Speaker 3: Combine here in Indianapolis. This is Patriots Draft Countdown presented
- 0:26Speaker 3: by bud Light. Bud Light Easy to Drink, Easy to Enjoy,
- 0:29Speaker 3: the official beer sponsor of the New England Patriots. And
- 0:32Speaker 3: the workout started last night. Evan, we're really getting into
- 0:35Speaker 3: the meat of the combine. I think for a lot
- 0:36Speaker 3: of people they think this is when the combine actually starts.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Like I saw a lot of tweets of like, oh,
- 0:40Speaker 3: the Combine's finally starting Thursday, and like we've been here
- 0:42Speaker 3: for like three days already doing interviews.
- 0:44Speaker 2: But this is when it gets interesting.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Certainly, guys perform well, other guys choose not to work
- 0:49Speaker 3: out as well. We actually got a chance finally we
- 0:52Speaker 3: went and sat inside the what is it the RCA Dome,
- 0:55Speaker 3: not anymore?
- 0:55Speaker 2: What do we call it? Now you've been there before.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Now you're putting me on this spot, Lucas. Of course,
- 1:02Speaker 4: I like blanked as soon as you asked me that question.
- 1:04Speaker 3: I blanked as soon as I thought of it. But yeah,
- 1:06Speaker 3: pretty cool experience, you know, getting to see it. We
- 1:08Speaker 3: all watch it on television plenty, and so to see
- 1:10Speaker 3: the drills go through it was pretty pretty interesting. So,
- 1:13Speaker 3: just off the top, what were your takeaways from that
- 1:15Speaker 3: first set of workouts with the defensive linemen and linebackers.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I think obviously when you get into the actual
- 1:20Speaker 4: athletic testing, you don't really need to see that, like
- 1:23Speaker 4: you can just get the number. But it was really
- 1:25Speaker 4: cool to be inside the stadium to watch the drills
- 1:28Speaker 4: on the field.
- 1:29Speaker 2: You just get a different feel for you.
- 1:31Speaker 4: You can hear the pop on the pads and you
- 1:33Speaker 4: can see the footwork a little bit better and that
- 1:36Speaker 4: was cool. And I can understand now if you're a scout,
- 1:40Speaker 4: you have to be there like that, you have to
- 1:42Speaker 4: be able to see it, and there is a difference.
- 1:44Speaker 4: It's almost like a game, right, There is a difference
- 1:46Speaker 4: to being there in person. Now in terms of the workouts,
- 1:49Speaker 4: I think right off the top of the draft, it
- 1:51Speaker 4: was just a little bit disappointing the amount of guys
- 1:54Speaker 4: that didn't work out that are going to be in
- 1:56Speaker 4: the conversation for the Patriots at four. Overall, you know
- 1:59Speaker 4: Abdual Carter, we know about the foot situation, that was
- 2:01Speaker 4: an injury related situation. Mason Graham holding off to his
- 2:05Speaker 4: pro day, Jaylen Walker holding off to his pro day.
- 2:07Speaker 4: MIKEL Williams has a tweak of a hamstring. I believe
- 2:10Speaker 4: it was that caused him to sit out this yesterday.
- 2:14Speaker 4: So all the guys that we were talking about in
- 2:17Speaker 4: terms of that range didn't really participate. The one guy
- 2:21Speaker 4: that maybe we could talk about in that range that
- 2:23Speaker 4: had a great workout was obviously Shamar Stewart from Texas.
- 2:26Speaker 2: A and M.
- 2:27Speaker 4: A lot of people were expecting that to happen. And
- 2:30Speaker 4: there's an old someone told me a scouting term, don't
- 2:34Speaker 4: count it twice. So if you knew that Shamar Stewart
- 2:36Speaker 4: was a great athlete, this doesn't make it any right,
- 2:40Speaker 4: Like we already knew he was a unicorn athlete, So
- 2:43Speaker 4: don't count it twice. But at the same time, you
- 2:46Speaker 4: look at the traits, you look at the production in
- 2:49Speaker 4: terms of the advanced metrics like pressures and disruption and
- 2:52Speaker 4: all that kind of stuff. He didn't have the sacks,
- 2:54Speaker 4: but he had all of that in his favor. So
- 2:58Speaker 4: maybe a little rich at four overall for the Patriots,
- 3:01Speaker 4: but if they do execute a trade down, I think
- 3:04Speaker 4: Shamar Stewart in the conversation.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Yeah, So we've also got an interview coming up with
- 3:08Speaker 3: Dan Brugler, who provided a little bit more.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Insight on Shamar Stewart.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Obviously an outstanding day for him that certainly improved his
- 3:15Speaker 3: status today. We've moved on in the interview portion, at
- 3:17Speaker 3: least with wide receivers and the running backs and the
- 3:20Speaker 3: quarterbacks as well.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Teed McMillan another piece, not going to run.
- 3:24Speaker 3: That was something I was kind of interested to see
- 3:26Speaker 3: and probably not surprising that he chose to delay that
- 3:29Speaker 3: or perhaps put it off entirely. But we did get
- 3:32Speaker 3: a chance to talk to some of these receiver options.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Not a great class this year, and again Dane provide
- 3:36Speaker 3: a little bit more insight on that as well. What'll
- 3:39Speaker 3: your takeaways here from this morning with the wide receivers
- 3:41Speaker 3: and the running backs.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Definitely disappointed and honestly, like small Sea, concerned that Teed
- 3:46Speaker 4: McMillan doesn't want to run here at the combine. That
- 3:49Speaker 4: signals to me that some of the concerns about his
- 3:51Speaker 4: top end speed and explosiveness might be legitimate. If he
- 3:55Speaker 4: goes out, like Dane said, and runs a four or
- 3:57Speaker 4: five five, then that's going to hurt his stock, and
- 3:59Speaker 4: he doesn't want to do that. If he knew he
- 4:01Speaker 4: was gonna run well and kind of take people by
- 4:03Speaker 4: surprise there, then he'd be running. So that's a little
- 4:06Speaker 4: bit of a concern to me. I already had some
- 4:08Speaker 4: concerns with him in terms of that on tape that
- 4:11Speaker 4: he's not exactly the most dynamic mover, and yeah, he's
- 4:15Speaker 4: got great body control and great size, but you worry
- 4:18Speaker 4: about separation, especially second third level separation with Ted McMillan,
- 4:22Speaker 4: that maybe it's a little bit rich, you know, for
- 4:24Speaker 4: four overall for that type of player. The other guys
- 4:28Speaker 4: that I thought were impressive were maybe a little bit
- 4:30Speaker 4: further down the board that we can get to as well,
- 4:33Speaker 4: but just off the top again, like I still don't
- 4:35Speaker 4: really understand what's going on with Luther Burden and why
- 4:38Speaker 4: he seems to be falling out of the first round,
- 4:40Speaker 4: and a lot of mock drafts and things like that.
- 4:43Speaker 4: I still see him as a really talented player, top twenty,
- 4:46Speaker 4: top twenty five talent in this class.
- 4:48Speaker 2: So we'll see what he does.
- 4:50Speaker 4: I believe he is going to test and maybe he
- 4:52Speaker 4: has a great workout on Saturday and that changes everything
- 4:56Speaker 4: for him.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Yeah, so really deep running back class this year. A
- 4:59Speaker 3: lot of people have been talking and about. Of course,
- 5:00Speaker 3: asked in gent from Poise State atop the list. Another
- 5:03Speaker 3: guy that kind of had that Georgia I'm already in
- 5:06Speaker 3: the league vibe as well, would point him out. But
- 5:09Speaker 3: I think that there's some good depth and there's just
- 5:11Speaker 3: it seems to me like this is a great year.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Third round, fourth round, take a flyer on one of
- 5:16Speaker 3: these guys. Patriots obviously have two running backs under contract
- 5:19Speaker 3: as of right now with ramondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Pretty good place to start, but I think it's a
- 5:25Speaker 3: spot that they could still probably use some reinforcements in
- 5:28Speaker 3: some young depth.
- 5:28Speaker 4: One hundred percent, and this definitely feels like a third
- 5:31Speaker 4: or fourth round pick. They have those two third rounders
- 5:34Speaker 4: and then another pick at the top of the fourth
- 5:36Speaker 4: round where you can find at least an RB one
- 5:40Speaker 4: and a half right like a b you know, it's
- 5:42Speaker 4: a Remondre Stevenson being your a back in the committee.
- 5:45Speaker 4: So I don't know if you're necessarily gonna find Ashton
- 5:48Speaker 4: Gentry is kind of like, you know, a lead back
- 5:50Speaker 4: right that's gonna be a cornerstone of your offense. But
- 5:53Speaker 4: in third or fourth round, you can get a really solid,
- 5:57Speaker 4: you know, backup running back to Remandre or even somebody
- 5:59Speaker 4: that can push Formandre if he doesn't fix the fumbling
- 6:02Speaker 4: issues and ball security concerns. A couple of guys that
- 6:05Speaker 4: stand out to me and I'm looking forward to watching
- 6:08Speaker 4: a workout. Quin Shawn Jenkins from Ohio State, I think
- 6:10Speaker 4: is a really fun player, really explosive player, can catch
- 6:14Speaker 4: the ball out of the backfield too and use that
- 6:16Speaker 4: dynamic moving ability all over the field. I dislike those
- 6:19Speaker 4: types of guys at that spot, like they kind of
- 6:21Speaker 4: have a road grader with Hermandre guy that's going to
- 6:23Speaker 4: pick up the tough yards and run the ball between
- 6:25Speaker 4: the tackles. So adding somebody with some juice might might
- 6:28Speaker 4: be something that is appealing. And then Devin Neil from
- 6:31Speaker 4: from Kansas, I think is a guy that if you
- 6:33Speaker 4: want to go more power back raable style but has
- 6:37Speaker 4: some juice to get the edge. And I had a
- 6:38Speaker 4: really great workout at the Senior Bowl or practice week
- 6:41Speaker 4: at the Senior Bowl. So those were a couple guys
- 6:44Speaker 4: that stood out to me at the podiums. And then
- 6:47Speaker 4: you know with Neil down in Mobile a couple of
- 6:49Speaker 4: months ago. So I look at those two guys as
- 6:51Speaker 4: a nice possibility for the Patriots there. Yeah, Patriots quarterback
- 6:55Speaker 4: not a need necessarily, but do have to mention should
- 6:58Speaker 4: Her Sanders cam Ward.
- 6:59Speaker 3: You know, Shoulders look great. They were fantastic. I think
- 7:02Speaker 3: they should go one two right draft. Somebody needs. I
- 7:05Speaker 3: mean the way Shitur Sanders was talking, it was the
- 7:07Speaker 3: confidence of his father.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I mean it was the Dion Sanders. You know.
- 7:11Speaker 3: I heard him say history repeats itself and I've you know,
- 7:14Speaker 3: we're restored two programs and I'll be able to do
- 7:16Speaker 3: that in the NFL as well. He does not lack
- 7:20Speaker 3: confidence at all. I enjoyed listening to him talk. Yeah,
- 7:23Speaker 3: he was fun to listen to.
- 7:24Speaker 4: And I was actually talking to somebody about these two
- 7:26Speaker 4: quarterbacks and we were talking about Josh Allen and how
- 7:29Speaker 4: Josh Allen has broken all of our brains when it
- 7:31Speaker 4: comes to a valleying quarterbacks, And we kind of talked
- 7:33Speaker 4: ourselves into Drake May in the same sense because you
- 7:36Speaker 4: feel like you can fix mechanics a little bit more
- 7:38Speaker 4: now than maybe we felt five ten years ago because
- 7:41Speaker 4: of guys like Josh Allen, and I look at a
- 7:43Speaker 4: player like cam Ward and think there's so much raw
- 7:47Speaker 4: tools there and upside with his arm talent, and maybe
- 7:51Speaker 4: if you get him more refined like a Josh Allen,
- 7:54Speaker 4: like a Drake May, you know he's gonna blossom into
- 7:57Speaker 4: the league into a great quarterback. Whereas with Shador, I
- 8:01Speaker 4: see like a four quarterback, Like I see a guy
- 8:03Speaker 4: that already has all that because he's been coached by
- 8:06Speaker 4: his father his entire life, and Tom Brady a little
- 8:08Speaker 4: bit too, and like he already has all those details
- 8:11Speaker 4: in minutia. So now you worry about Kenny, how much
- 8:14Speaker 4: better is he really going to get at the next level,
- 8:17Speaker 4: because he's kind of tapped out a little bit. But
- 8:19Speaker 4: you will feel really comfortable about him stepping in, handling
- 8:23Speaker 4: the spotlight, handling what the pressure that comes with being
- 8:27Speaker 4: a franchise quarterback and being good enough that if he's
- 8:30Speaker 4: surrounded by enough weapons if he goes to the Giants
- 8:33Speaker 4: and he has Molikue neighbors and they keep stacking talent
- 8:36Speaker 4: on that roster, then you could see him being an
- 8:38Speaker 4: effective point guard of an offense. I'm just not sure
- 8:40Speaker 4: he's an elevator of an offense, but he might be
- 8:43Speaker 4: an elevator of a culture, which is what he tried
- 8:45Speaker 4: to tell us when he said that he fixed two programs.
- 8:48Speaker 4: I'll give him Jackson State, like Colorado. You know, they're
- 8:51Speaker 4: much better than they were. I don't know if he
- 8:53Speaker 4: fixed Colorado, Like we're not in college football playoffs or
- 8:57Speaker 4: anything like that in Boulder, but I can see where
- 8:59Speaker 4: he's coming from.
- 9:00Speaker 3: So we had an opportunity to sit down with Dane
- 9:01Speaker 3: Brugler from The Athletic, who writes the Huge Monster of
- 9:05Speaker 3: the Beast, appropriately named that we all excitedly wait for.
- 9:08Speaker 3: I mean, unfortunately it comes out in like April, so
- 9:09Speaker 3: you feel like you kind of know everything and then
- 9:11Speaker 3: all of a sudden, you just get this huge bible
- 9:13Speaker 3: dropped on you with so much detail, and it's I
- 9:15Speaker 3: think it's a great kind of finishing touch to the draft.
- 9:18Speaker 3: So really cool to get your opportunity to sit down
- 9:21Speaker 3: with Dane here's what he had to say. All right,
- 9:23Speaker 3: we're excited to be joined now by Dan Brugler from
- 9:25Speaker 3: the Athletic the producer and what do you call you like,
- 9:27Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 9:28Speaker 2: It's not just an author.
- 9:29Speaker 3: It's more than that of the Beast, which we all
- 9:32Speaker 3: wait for every year, and you know, we're all so
- 9:34Speaker 3: grateful for all the hard work you put in.
- 9:36Speaker 2: I got to start off with the question I'm sure
- 9:37Speaker 2: you get, just what is.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Your process like over the course of the year putting
- 9:41Speaker 3: that big the Beast together?
- 9:42Speaker 5: Well, it takes the full year, and even more so
- 9:44Speaker 5: than that because inevitably you pick up different tidbits for
- 9:48Speaker 5: the future class.
- 9:48Speaker 6: And so yeah, it's a process.
- 9:51Speaker 5: And you know, at my heart, I'm a draft fan,
- 9:54Speaker 5: so I want to make something that I would want
- 9:56Speaker 5: to read and consume and really enjoy, and so detail
- 10:00Speaker 5: is too small. I'm a big believer in to know
- 10:04Speaker 5: where these guys are headed, you need to know where
- 10:05Speaker 5: they came from and so understand their journey, understand everything
- 10:10Speaker 5: that got them to this point the doorstep of the NFL,
- 10:13Speaker 5: and that helps you understand them as people. And then
- 10:16Speaker 5: of course the analysis part, you know, just making sure
- 10:18Speaker 5: you're studying the tape, talking to scouts, talking to teams,
- 10:20Speaker 5: understanding what they do well it'll translate what won't translate.
- 10:24Speaker 6: So certainly a process.
- 10:26Speaker 5: And yeah, we're down to this last month, which gives
- 10:29Speaker 5: me anxiety to think about. But yeah, excited to share
- 10:32Speaker 5: it with everybody here at early April.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Now we're excited to get it for sure. Just from
- 10:36Speaker 3: a Patriots perspective. Fourth overall, I think we're all kind
- 10:38Speaker 3: of in the same position where we're you know, maybe
- 10:40Speaker 3: Hunter or Carter to fall, probably not. Does will Campbell
- 10:44Speaker 3: make sense? There is there someone else? Is there a
- 10:46Speaker 3: trade down? I mean it's last year was so straightforward
- 10:48Speaker 3: with quarterback at three.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Now it seems a little bit more uncertainty.
- 10:51Speaker 3: What are your thoughts on the Patriots position A fourth overall?
- 10:54Speaker 5: Yeah, and I think I think there's a very good
- 10:57Speaker 5: chance the cam Ward is the number one pick, if
- 11:00Speaker 5: where we are right now, with what we know right now, I.
- 11:02Speaker 6: Think he's the favorite to be that number one pick.
- 11:04Speaker 6: Now to who who? You know?
- 11:05Speaker 5: It could be the Titans, could be the Giants, could
- 11:07Speaker 5: be another team. And then after that it gets interesting.
- 11:11Speaker 5: I think I think the Browns one out of there.
- 11:12Speaker 5: I think they'd love the trade back. Do they have
- 11:14Speaker 5: a trade partner? Who knows? But I would agree with
- 11:17Speaker 5: you that the chances of Abdul Carter or Travis Hunter
- 11:20Speaker 5: falling before are probably not great.
- 11:21Speaker 6: They're not probably not high.
- 11:23Speaker 5: And then, okay, what direction do you pivot and say
- 11:27Speaker 5: you can't trade back, say you're stuck at four. Is
- 11:29Speaker 5: there an offensive lineman you love enough to take a four?
- 11:32Speaker 5: Whether that's Will Campbell from LSU? Could you take armand
- 11:35Speaker 5: Membu from Missouri that early? Which of these offensive linemen
- 11:38Speaker 5: do you like the best? And then besides the offensive line,
- 11:41Speaker 5: is there someone else? Could it be a mc A
- 11:43Speaker 5: team Maac from Arizona, who unfortunately is not gonna be working.
- 11:46Speaker 6: Out here this week.
- 11:48Speaker 5: But could it be another one of those players that
- 11:51Speaker 5: you feel like, all right, we drop him into our
- 11:53Speaker 5: on our team and he's gonna make the biggest impact
- 11:55Speaker 5: for us.
- 11:56Speaker 6: You know, I don't.
- 11:56Speaker 5: We can get caught up too much in need and
- 11:59Speaker 5: you know, yeah, of course need more help a receiver.
- 12:01Speaker 5: Of course, they only need more help on the offensive line.
- 12:03Speaker 5: When you're drafting top five, you can't think like that.
- 12:05Speaker 5: You have to think about for the next four or
- 12:07Speaker 5: five years. Who's going to make the greatest impact. That
- 12:10Speaker 5: could be a pass rusher, that could be somebody else
- 12:13Speaker 5: on the defensive line. So for the Patriots, you just
- 12:17Speaker 5: you got to list your top four players in this
- 12:19Speaker 5: draft who are going to impact your roster for the
- 12:21Speaker 5: next five years. You're guaranteed to get one of those guys,
- 12:23Speaker 5: and yeah, it'll be interesting.
- 12:25Speaker 4: I wanted to ask you about you mentioned t Max
- 12:28Speaker 4: not going to work out. It seems like that's that's
- 12:31Speaker 4: pretty prevalent right now, especially with the top guys in
- 12:34Speaker 4: this draft. You feel like it's more than it's been
- 12:36Speaker 4: in the past. And what are teams saying about the
- 12:39Speaker 4: future of this event in terms of the athletic testing.
- 12:41Speaker 5: Yeah, I was talking with the scout yesterday about this
- 12:44Speaker 5: and he seemed very confident that, you know, because there's
- 12:48Speaker 5: a lot of players that do want to work out.
- 12:50Speaker 5: There's a lot of players that look at this as
- 12:51Speaker 5: an opportunity to just go show out and show what
- 12:54Speaker 5: they can do. Because there's the peak athletes, the top
- 12:58Speaker 5: guys at each position, should I think feel like they
- 13:01Speaker 5: have a little bit of leverage where I can only hurt.
- 13:03Speaker 6: Myself, you know, an ash and Gentee tea Mac.
- 13:06Speaker 5: You know, if T Mac goes out there, it runs
- 13:08Speaker 5: a four or five five, you know, is he hurting
- 13:11Speaker 5: himself at that point? But you know, there's there's different
- 13:14Speaker 5: ways to think about it, because what happens when you
- 13:16Speaker 5: go to your pro day and you have a stomach
- 13:18Speaker 5: bug that morning. You know what happens when maybe just
- 13:21Speaker 5: you don't have your best day, you stumble whatever, like
- 13:23Speaker 5: you're putting all your eggs in that basket.
- 13:26Speaker 6: And this is a fast track here in Indy. So
- 13:28Speaker 6: the chance to go out there and you.
- 13:30Speaker 5: Know, even if it's not the greatest time, hey just
- 13:33Speaker 5: cross it off, check the box, move on. And you know,
- 13:37Speaker 5: for the most part, teams aren't going to adjust their
- 13:40Speaker 5: rankings based off of the littlest changes in your forty
- 13:44Speaker 5: yard dash. If you know, if you like T Mac,
- 13:46Speaker 5: you know you've seen him, so you know he's not
- 13:48Speaker 5: gonna run a four to three.
- 13:49Speaker 6: You know he's probably a four or five two athlete
- 13:51Speaker 6: and that's fine. You know T.
- 13:53Speaker 5: Higgins was a four or five nine athlete in his
- 13:55Speaker 5: forty yard dash, right, So it's more about focusing on
- 13:58Speaker 5: the strengths, what they do well and why you love
- 14:01Speaker 5: teamac as a receiver, it's not necessarily the speed, it's
- 14:04Speaker 5: his ability to be a ball winner. It's the flexibility
- 14:07Speaker 5: and the fluidity that he has in and out of
- 14:09Speaker 5: his breaks at the catch point. Nobody over the last
- 14:12Speaker 5: two years and college football has more catches of twenty
- 14:15Speaker 5: plus yards than te Mac And so he's a guy
- 14:18Speaker 5: that's super talented. The production is there. I think he's
- 14:22Speaker 5: a top ten pick in this class when you just
- 14:24Speaker 5: focus on the players available this year. Would the Patriots
- 14:27Speaker 5: take him as early as four? I think at least
- 14:30Speaker 5: should be in the conversation.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Before we get a little bit deeper.
- 14:33Speaker 4: I did want to ask you about Mason Graham and
- 14:35Speaker 4: yesterday weighs in he's only about two hundred ninety six pounds,
- 14:38Speaker 4: which checks out a little bit better than the three
- 14:40Speaker 4: to twenty I think that they had at Michigan.
- 14:42Speaker 2: But I heard you on the radio in Boston.
- 14:45Speaker 4: I think it was on the Sports Hub in Boston
- 14:48Speaker 4: saying he's not necessarily at Quentin Williams level prospect, but
- 14:52Speaker 4: he's really good. And where do you kind of fall
- 14:54Speaker 4: on Mason Graham? And do you still see him going
- 14:57Speaker 4: as early as four after the weigh ins and stuff.
- 15:00Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the combine is not made for a
- 15:03Speaker 5: guy like Mason Graham, you know, because he doesn't have
- 15:06Speaker 5: the ideal body type. His arms are a little bit shorter.
- 15:10Speaker 5: You know, he's not working out, which I don't I
- 15:12Speaker 5: think he would have been fine. I don't think he
- 15:13Speaker 5: would have blown it up at all. He's a guy
- 15:16Speaker 5: that you watch the tape and you're like, all right,
- 15:17Speaker 5: good football player, you know, but is he a Quinn
- 15:20Speaker 5: Williams ascend a type of guy that's going to make
- 15:23Speaker 5: turn your defensive line from good to great. That's where
- 15:27Speaker 5: you know, I think there's a little bit of a
- 15:28Speaker 5: question mark. And ideally, if you're picking a defensive tackle
- 15:31Speaker 5: top five, that's who you want. But you know what,
- 15:35Speaker 5: you can't force something that's not there. And in this class,
- 15:39Speaker 5: Mason Graham is one of the best, you know, seven
- 15:41Speaker 5: players in the draft. And so even though he might
- 15:44Speaker 5: not be a Quinn Williams type of impact prospect, he's
- 15:48Speaker 5: still a good player. I mean, you watch the film
- 15:50Speaker 5: and I don't think I don't know how he could
- 15:51Speaker 5: come away from watching his film and say, eh, he's okay.
- 15:54Speaker 5: Like he is a he consistently disrupts, and you see
- 15:56Speaker 5: that with the block deconstruction, former wrestling. The leverage. He's
- 16:01Speaker 5: a leverage monster, I mean, the only way to describe him.
- 16:04Speaker 5: So he can win with quickness, win with power. There's
- 16:06Speaker 5: just a lot to like about the way he plays
- 16:08Speaker 5: when he suits up on game.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Day this week, there'll be risers, followers.
- 16:12Speaker 3: You know, we'll kind of regroup after this as we
- 16:15Speaker 3: get to the Patriots' second round pick down there, do
- 16:17Speaker 3: you feel like, where's the value going to be?
- 16:18Speaker 2: What positions?
- 16:19Speaker 3: Do you have a sense of what might get kind
- 16:20Speaker 3: of pushed down as maybe certain guys come up, certain
- 16:23Speaker 3: guys fall. I know it's hard to say right at
- 16:25Speaker 3: this point, but I think that's what we're looking at
- 16:27Speaker 3: with that in the second pick.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Right, I think defensive line, because it's a deep defensive
- 16:32Speaker 5: line group and not all of them are going to
- 16:34Speaker 5: go in the first round, so there will be plenty
- 16:36Speaker 5: of guys. You know, in Alfred Collins from from Texas
- 16:39Speaker 5: who didn't have a great vertical, but you know once
- 16:42Speaker 5: you watch the film and he's just consistently disruptive. He's
- 16:46Speaker 5: six five, three hundred and thirty five pounds really long,
- 16:49Speaker 5: So a guy like that who maybe doesn't go in
- 16:52Speaker 5: the first but he's gonna be there in the second
- 16:53Speaker 5: I think there's a couple of those defensive linemen that
- 16:55Speaker 5: will be there where you could really bolster your depth
- 16:58Speaker 5: and get a good player in this second round. Receivers tough,
- 17:01Speaker 5: because you know, let's just say the Patriots go defensive
- 17:04Speaker 5: line in the first what receivers are going to be
- 17:07Speaker 5: there for you in the early second round? Usually we're
- 17:10Speaker 5: so we're spoiled with too many receivers every year. This
- 17:13Speaker 5: year is a little bit of the opposite. Say four
- 17:18Speaker 5: receivers go first round. Let's say it's t Mac, It's Golden.
- 17:21Speaker 5: It's like Buca and Travis Hunter, or and Burdon Luther Burton.
- 17:26Speaker 5: Who's is there somebody else that you love in this class?
- 17:29Speaker 5: At Jalen Royals, Jayden Higgins. I love Jalen Noel, But
- 17:35Speaker 5: are any of those guys worth the pick in the
- 17:38Speaker 5: early second round? That's something that I think the Patriots
- 17:42Speaker 5: might struggle with finding a guy that they I mean,
- 17:45Speaker 5: we could say they struggle with it last year at
- 17:47Speaker 5: the top of the second round, finding a guy that
- 17:49Speaker 5: you know you'll point to and say, oh, yeah, this
- 17:51Speaker 5: is this is the guy we need for our offense.
- 17:54Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely look at their receiver position a little bit.
- 17:56Speaker 4: I think we're all kind of expecting trenches from the Patriots.
- 18:01Speaker 4: That's when all of their decision makers have been telling
- 18:04Speaker 4: us for a couple months now. So assuming like let's
- 18:07Speaker 4: say they go offensive line defensive line with their first
- 18:09Speaker 4: two picks. Is there any third fourth round receivers that
- 18:12Speaker 4: you see as fits?
- 18:14Speaker 6: Oh?
- 18:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I think Jack Besh would would fit with he
- 18:17Speaker 5: just think of he seems like a like verbal guy.
- 18:20Speaker 5: The toughness of physicality, the way he plays, the mindset
- 18:24Speaker 5: like Jack Besh would be a really good fit.
- 18:27Speaker 6: I mentioned Jalen Noel. I think he's gonna run really
- 18:29Speaker 6: well here.
- 18:30Speaker 5: He's not the biggest guy, he's you know, five nine
- 18:33Speaker 5: and a half under two hundred pounds, but he can
- 18:36Speaker 5: win vertically. He can win on quick hitters and then
- 18:38Speaker 5: be a threat after the catch. A big fan of
- 18:41Speaker 5: Noel and what he brings, and if he were to
- 18:42Speaker 5: make it to the third round, I would love that fit,
- 18:45Speaker 5: even though again not do's another size, but he can
- 18:48Speaker 5: still get open and make plays.
- 18:51Speaker 6: Elika aoman or from Stanford. He's interesting.
- 18:55Speaker 5: You know, he's still relatively new to football, still learning
- 18:58Speaker 5: in a lot of ways. But he's built well, he
- 19:01Speaker 5: has talent. Eager to see what he runs, because on
- 19:05Speaker 5: tape he looks more like a four or five guy.
- 19:07Speaker 5: But you know what, if he were able to get
- 19:09Speaker 5: into four fours, that might change the thinking with him
- 19:11Speaker 5: about Okay, is he a late third brunder, Maybe take
- 19:13Speaker 5: an early third round.
- 19:15Speaker 6: But he's there.
- 19:16Speaker 5: There's a lot to like with Ao Minor when you
- 19:19Speaker 5: get to after the first two rounds.
- 19:21Speaker 4: Yeah, that great game against Travis Hunter a couple of
- 19:23Speaker 4: years ago, and that that's one of the best wide
- 19:25Speaker 4: receiver tapes I've seen out of any of these guys
- 19:27Speaker 4: in this class.
- 19:28Speaker 5: And you saw it all in there. You saw speed,
- 19:29Speaker 5: just a physicality. You know he was at the podium,
- 19:33Speaker 5: is actually talking about that.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Oh oh you're getting put on the spot for you.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Thank you. Come back in about ten minutes.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, oh, I've already had something enough.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Thank you. The timing of that was impeccable.
- 19:51Speaker 3: As always, as always as they got us last year live,
- 19:53Speaker 3: we harked him down. But well, we'll keep it just
- 19:55Speaker 3: to the beast at this point. Just any other players
- 19:58Speaker 3: that stand out to your personal favorites, guys that he
- 20:00Speaker 3: just really enjoy kind of watching this offseason.
- 20:03Speaker 5: Well, Carson Schwessinger, the linebacker from UCLA, is one of
- 20:06Speaker 5: my favorites.
- 20:06Speaker 6: It's just speeding instincts.
- 20:08Speaker 5: You know, if that sounds okay for you in a linebacker,
- 20:10Speaker 5: you're gonna like Carson Schwessinger. And maybe just recency bias
- 20:16Speaker 5: because you know, in the stadium last night watching those
- 20:18Speaker 5: guys work out, it was fun to see Schimour Stewart work.
- 20:22Speaker 6: That guy is the freak of all the freaks.
- 20:24Speaker 5: The rumor they're gonna name the combine after him after
- 20:26Speaker 5: what he did yesterday. I made one five eight ten
- 20:29Speaker 5: yard split at that size is ridiculous.
- 20:32Speaker 6: Von Miller's ten yard split was one five nine.
- 20:34Speaker 5: So just a context of how that burst and that
- 20:38Speaker 5: elite get off and you saw that at a senior bowl,
- 20:40Speaker 5: saw that on tape.
- 20:42Speaker 6: All the talk's gonna be about one and a half sacks.
- 20:44Speaker 6: I get it.
- 20:45Speaker 5: But when you watch the tape, you see a more
- 20:46Speaker 5: productive player because he's able to h make the quarterback
- 20:50Speaker 5: move his feet, be disruptive and yeah, do you want
- 20:53Speaker 5: him to get sacks. Of course, But if you're being
- 20:56Speaker 5: disruptive and you're affecting the backfield action, then you're doing
- 20:59Speaker 5: your job as a pass rusher. And so Schmart Stewart
- 21:01Speaker 5: does that consistently. And that's why I think when it's
- 21:03Speaker 5: all said and on, he's going to be somewhere in
- 21:06Speaker 5: the top fifteen picks.
- 21:07Speaker 6: It's just a matter of, you know, how high does
- 21:10Speaker 6: he go.
- 21:10Speaker 2: I want to ask you one last one and then
- 21:11Speaker 2: we'll let you go. Tight end.
- 21:13Speaker 4: I feel like in this class we talked a lot
- 21:15Speaker 4: about wide receiver and how it's not as great of
- 21:17Speaker 4: a class, how much you know one how much are
- 21:20Speaker 4: people talking about, well, maybe we should just take Tyler
- 21:23Speaker 4: Warren instead of you know, drafting a receiver in the
- 21:25Speaker 4: top ten And to who are some of those day
- 21:28Speaker 4: to day three tight ends that you like?
- 21:30Speaker 5: Yeah, you could make a case, you know, say there's
- 21:33Speaker 5: only twelve thirteen first runk grades in this year, this class.
- 21:36Speaker 5: You could make a case that, you know, Warren's one
- 21:38Speaker 5: of them. You make a case Colson Lovelin from Michigan
- 21:40Speaker 5: is one of them. Again, it should come down to
- 21:42Speaker 5: who's going to impact your offense the most. And if
- 21:44Speaker 5: you come away thinking that it could be Tyler Warren,
- 21:47Speaker 5: then hey, you owe it to yourselves to at least
- 21:50Speaker 5: consider that possibility, even though a tight end that early
- 21:54Speaker 5: definitely feels rich. But this is a unique draft class,
- 21:57Speaker 5: very unique, and it's ironic. You know, last year was
- 22:00Speaker 5: so deep and a guy like Brock Bauers, who was
- 22:03Speaker 5: a top five talent in that class, falls.
- 22:04Speaker 6: All the way to thirteen.
- 22:06Speaker 5: But this year, you know, it's just not as deep,
- 22:08Speaker 5: and a guy like Tyler Warren, who in Colston Lovelin,
- 22:10Speaker 5: they're not quite Brock Bowers, but there still can impact
- 22:13Speaker 5: the game. One of the reasons not to take a
- 22:15Speaker 5: tight end early.
- 22:16Speaker 6: Is because it is deep.
- 22:17Speaker 5: Mason Arroyo or Mason Taylor, Elijah Royo, big fan of
- 22:21Speaker 5: Gunner Helm from Texas. I think all those those three
- 22:25Speaker 5: guys are all starters in the NFL. I think Harold
- 22:28Speaker 5: fan and Junior is on his way. Not as immediate
- 22:32Speaker 5: for him, but you know, you don't catch one hundred
- 22:34Speaker 5: and seventeen balls in college football in a single season,
- 22:36Speaker 5: and if you're not a talented receiver. So and then
- 22:39Speaker 5: even in the Day three, Terrence Ferguson from Oregon is
- 22:42Speaker 5: a really good player. It's a position that will stretch.
- 22:45Speaker 5: And as much as I like Tyler Warren and Colston Lovelin.
- 22:48Speaker 5: It's kind of the reason, like, hey, well let's get
- 22:51Speaker 5: our offensive tackle now, let's get our defensive lineman now,
- 22:53Speaker 5: and we can wait on tight end because we know
- 22:56Speaker 5: the caliber a player that will be there for us
- 22:58Speaker 5: rounds two, three, and four.
- 22:59Speaker 2: How do you get the birthdays?
- 23:02Speaker 4: That's because that's always you Google how old is somebody?
- 23:06Speaker 4: And it's never right or it's never accurate. Like that's
- 23:09Speaker 4: my number one question about.
- 23:10Speaker 6: Talk to the player.
- 23:11Speaker 5: I talked to the straight goes straight to the horse's
- 23:13Speaker 5: mouth and say, hey, h twenty three in August, right
- 23:17Speaker 5: twenty second?
- 23:18Speaker 6: Yep, okay, perfectly, because that's you know, that's it. Yeah,
- 23:22Speaker 6: you would think it'd be more or easier.
- 23:25Speaker 5: A lot of schools make it easy on you, you know,
- 23:27Speaker 5: because they have them and you can trust those. But yeah,
- 23:30Speaker 5: I've learned over the years, Google is not the most
- 23:33Speaker 5: reliable when it comes to the birth dates for the prospects.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Clarious. Well, Tim, we'll let you get back to the beast.
- 23:39Speaker 2: I'm sure you got work to do. Thanks so much
- 23:40Speaker 2: for sitting down with me.
- 23:41Speaker 6: Sound thanks, guys, appreciate it all.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Right, So enjoy talking to dam and can't wait to
- 23:44Speaker 3: get that Beast, and if you have, if you don't
- 23:46Speaker 3: subscribe to the Athletic, I think the Beast is pretty
- 23:47Speaker 3: much worth it on its own, Like you don't even
- 23:49Speaker 3: need anything else into the about a five hundred page document,
- 23:52Speaker 3: but it's going to do it for us here at
- 23:55Speaker 3: the combine. But Devan's still plenty more going on after
- 23:57Speaker 3: where boots off the ground. The workouts will continue, You'll
- 24:00Speaker 3: continue to do some write ups on that.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Just looking forward here to the weekend.
- 24:04Speaker 3: Of course, Will Campbell's arm link, Baby, that's gonna be
- 24:07Speaker 3: the big one we're all waiting for.
- 24:08Speaker 2: But what else are you looking forward to?
- 24:10Speaker 3: Interested to watch over the next couple of days as
- 24:12Speaker 3: all these guys test out.
- 24:13Speaker 4: Yeah, yesterday or on Thursday. All these days are blending
- 24:17Speaker 4: together at this point. But on Thursday, Travis Hunter did
- 24:19Speaker 4: say that he's going to work out with the dB,
- 24:21Speaker 4: so I am interested to see what he does and
- 24:25Speaker 4: how he tests and all those types of things. So
- 24:27Speaker 4: I'm curious if he then comes back on Saturday and
- 24:29Speaker 4: runs routes. I don't know how they're gonna do that,
- 24:32Speaker 4: so that would be interesting. So I'm definitely looking forward
- 24:35Speaker 4: to him and this tight end class. Like This tight
- 24:37Speaker 4: end class is gonna put on an absolute show. And
- 24:40Speaker 4: we talked to Dan about it. Is there an argument
- 24:43Speaker 4: for Tyler Warren? Is there an argument in a trade
- 24:45Speaker 4: down maybe more realistically for Colston Lovelin that no, you
- 24:49Speaker 4: can't get the Marvin Harrison junior the Malik neighbors in
- 24:52Speaker 4: this class at the wide receiver position, but you can't
- 24:54Speaker 4: get brock Bowers right, Like, you know, is there that
- 24:56Speaker 4: case to be made that that's a more effective route
- 24:59Speaker 4: for the Patriots to find that dictating past catcher number
- 25:02Speaker 4: one receiver?
- 25:04Speaker 2: And I can always say, like we had Gronk, like
- 25:06Speaker 2: you shouldn't.
- 25:06Speaker 4: You shouldn't like look at the number one right yeah,
- 25:08Speaker 4: and say, oh, like you can't build it through a
- 25:10Speaker 4: tight end when we know very well in New England
- 25:13Speaker 4: that you can.
- 25:13Speaker 2: So I'm excited to see those guys as well.
- 25:15Speaker 3: All right, well, that's gonna be a rap from the combine,
- 25:17Speaker 3: But believe me, we are just getting started. I know
- 25:19Speaker 3: this week we'll have a free agency preview video coming out,
- 25:22Speaker 3: Paul Perlo will join us, and I think Evan, your
- 25:24Speaker 3: first mock draft is gonna.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Courr this week. Post combine mock.
- 25:27Speaker 3: There we go, right, so all the movers and follers
- 25:30Speaker 3: and shakers, Evan's got a finger on the pulse of
- 25:32Speaker 3: all of that. So again, the draft is rapidly approaching,
- 25:36Speaker 3: as this free agency. But we've got you covered. Plenty
- 25:38Speaker 3: of content coming your way. Stick with us all spring.
