- 0:00SPEAKER_00: So I had a friend of mine come yesterday and we're working on his annulment.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: And so we're talking about different things.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: And he was telling me about this documentary that he saw,
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: probably the one by James Cameron about the Tal Piat tomb that they found
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: in Jerusalem.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Which is called the Lost Tomb of Jesus.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: And they find this tomb and it has,
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: you know, an ossuary in it or something that says, you know, Jesus, son of Joseph.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And then it has his wife and then it has his son and everything.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: And I was, I listened to him and I'm like, oh, you know, that's nice.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: But it's not what St.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Paul is saying in this first letter to the Corinthians,
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: which is if Christ is not raised from the dead, then our faith is in vain.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And in fact,
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: the whole point of the gospel story and the story around that was that
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: the tomb was empty, right?
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: There were different explanations for why the tomb was empty.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: And the chief priest said, oh, you know, they went and they stole his body and everything.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: But nobody disagreed on the fact that the tomb was empty.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: So there wasn't Jesus' tomb lying out there with his body in it somewhere.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: And then everybody's like, oh, the tomb's empty.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: You know, that's completely absurd and nonsensical and impossible.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: So any of these sorts of You know,
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: post fact,
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: things that we find,
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: we find this tomb and people are just trying to gin up uncertainty and controversy.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: And, you know,
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: like there's,
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: there's this whole list of reasons why that entire proposition is absurd.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: So we don't need to worry about that.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: But the fact is there is something about the resurrection of Christ that makes all
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: of this discussion possible.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: And that's the fact of faith, right?
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Nobody is actually there at Christ's resurrection.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Nobody witnesses Christ's resurrection.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Everybody witnesses the empty tomb and they witness the risen Christ in different ways.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: But even Christ's appearances after the resurrection are also this sort
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: of this strange there but not there.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: And you read every one of those accounts and Christ shows up and people don't know who he is.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Why is that?
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Why does Christ come to people and they don't know who he is?
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: It's because Christ is trying to train people into the new way of being,
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: which is our way of being as Christians and as New Testament people.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: And it's not a way of being of mathematical certainty, right?
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: We don't know that Christ rose from the dead.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: It's sort of like, you know, two plus two equals four.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: You can't not know that when you see that.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: But yet the reality of Christ's resurrection and his appearances,
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: he's trying to lead people into faith.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: And what does faith mean?
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Faith is a radical invitation to us to participate in the mystery of Christ.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Because I'm not free to choose whether two plus two makes four, right?
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: I could be crazy and I could deny that.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: But I'm not free to choose which one of those is true.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: But I'm always free when it comes to belief in Christ or any belief, in fact.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: And we have to live our lives by faith.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: And that's what I'll tell people.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: They're like, well, I have trouble knowing that God loves me.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: But I was like, well, do you know that your mother loves you?
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Or do you know that anything's real?
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's like, well, show me the mathematical certainty for that.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: We don't have mathematical certainty for everything upon which we base our life.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: We live our lives by faith.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: In every area.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: And the ultimate example of that is our faith in God.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: And if you make that leap,
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: if you put your life into God's hands,
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: you experience the reality of faith and you experience that relationship in a way
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: that is absolutely, for anyone who has experienced it, incontrovertible.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: But if you come to someone,
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: some atheist comes to you like, well,
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: prove it to me and say, well, no,
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: I can't show you The mathematical certainty,
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: I can't lay that out for you because it's a relationship and I can't reduce
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: a relationship to,
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: a mathematical equation, but relationships are the most certain things in our life.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: There's nothing more certain than that.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: And so that's what faith is.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Faith is this relationship with God that Christ is inviting us into,
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: in which it's not based on some sort of certainty in
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: which it recognizes our freedom, in which it's not forced on us.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: But it's an invitation that's offered to us that we can choose to believe and
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: that honors us and invites us in and incorporates us by allowing us
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: to be active agents in that,
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: by allowing us to choose to enter into that and enter into that relationship,
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: to open ourselves up, as we talked about this week.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: To that relationship with Christ,
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: not to live that life that's just closed off, stuck inside myself.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: That's a safe life.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: That's also hell.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: But that's a safe life where you're closed off from everyone else.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: You're stuck inside yourself and nobody can get in or touch that.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: And the life that's opened up to God,
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: that's opened up to faith, that's opened up To the broader reality.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: That's true life.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: That is the life that Christ invites us to.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: And that's what his resurrection means.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: His resurrection is an invitation for all of us to enter into that life,
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: to accept him into our lives and with him to rise into God.
