- 0:01Speaker 1: We have been inside the Great American State Fair all
- 0:04Speaker 1: week long in DC, and the Make America Healthy Again
- 0:07Speaker 1: movement is a big part of the celebration. On MAHA Monday,
- 0:11Speaker 1: the focus was on President Trump's vision of a healthier,
- 0:15Speaker 1: stronger America. The MAHA agenda includes dietary reforms that cut
- 0:20Speaker 1: back on processed foods and sugar, a food supply overhaul
- 0:24Speaker 1: to get rid of dyes inside of our foods, and
- 0:27Speaker 1: that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program SNAP some restrictions on that
- 0:32Speaker 1: across America to shift spending toward healthier foods.
- 0:36Speaker 2: And there's a big push for agricultural.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Support, putting farmers first. You know, I love this, love
- 0:42Speaker 1: the middle part of the country, having lived in Kansas
- 0:44Speaker 1: City and Minneapolis, a.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Lot of our farm growers there. And Focus.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Now we're Rawlins Agriculture Secretary Secretary Rowlins, welcome and Focus.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Great to have you today.
- 0:54Speaker 1: First of all, let's talk about the farmer's role in.
- 0:58Speaker 2: All of this.
- 1:00Speaker 3: It's a remarkable time, I think, in our country's history,
- 1:03Speaker 3: not just because we're celebrating two hundred and fifty years
- 1:05Speaker 3: of freedom and liberty, obviously that's the pinnacle, but also
- 1:09Speaker 3: because what President Trump has represented is a complete sea
- 1:13Speaker 3: change in the way we think about and approach policy.
- 1:16Speaker 3: And I think one of the very things that is
- 1:18Speaker 3: going to be most remarkable when looking back on his
- 1:20Speaker 3: legacy is this moment in time and making America healthy again.
- 1:24Speaker 3: And Bobby Kennedy and I came from very different backgrounds.
- 1:26Speaker 3: We didn't really know each other very well before we
- 1:29Speaker 3: both got sworn in on the same day, February thirteenth
- 1:31Speaker 3: of last year. But our partnership, I believe has been
- 1:34Speaker 3: a game changer. The concept that three out of four
- 1:37Speaker 3: of our kids are not military ready, that chronic disease
- 1:41Speaker 3: is wiping out large portions of our population, and so
- 1:44Speaker 3: rewriting the dietary guidelines, flipping it upside down, making sure
- 1:48Speaker 3: that we're putting real food back at the center of
- 1:51Speaker 3: policy making in Washington, d c. And here's to your point.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Those farmers in Minnesota where you live, those farmers in
- 1:57Speaker 3: Missouri where you live, they are the key tenant, the
- 2:00Speaker 3: solution to everything. If we have real food, we support
- 2:04Speaker 3: our farmers, we get it back beef, dairy, veggies, et cetera.
- 2:08Speaker 3: We will make America healthy again. And snap is a
- 2:11Speaker 3: big part of that. But really it's for the entire population.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Well, look, my one concern about snap restrictions is that
- 2:18Speaker 1: we have a lot of food deserts in this country
- 2:20Speaker 1: where people can't get those fresh rooms. They live in
- 2:22Speaker 1: urban areas and they just can't get them, and when
- 2:25Speaker 1: they do, they're super expensive. So that's how I see
- 2:27Speaker 1: our farmers making a huge difference. The President has put
- 2:31Speaker 1: a big amount of money subsidizing some of our farmers
- 2:34Speaker 1: to be able to maybe make some.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Of that happen.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Well, very quickly, two hundred and fifty thousand retailers in
- 2:40Speaker 3: America except the EBT the snap car, so two hundred
- 2:44Speaker 3: fifty thousand. So about three months ago we officially changed
- 2:47Speaker 3: the rules. So instead of those two hundred and fifty
- 2:50Speaker 3: thousand only having to carry eleven quote healthy food staple items.
- 2:54Speaker 3: By the way, some of those were jelly for vegetables,
- 2:57Speaker 3: beef jerkey for protein, we got rid of all that.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Now they have to carry twenty eight or more healthy
- 3:03Speaker 3: it's called the stalking standards, what they stalk in their stores.
- 3:06Speaker 3: So you're right, it's a really important point for those
- 3:08Speaker 3: on the outer edges of our socioeconomic ladder of our
- 3:11Speaker 3: communities making sure that they have access to that food.
- 3:14Speaker 3: But also your point is so well taken. The Maha movement,
- 3:18Speaker 3: I believe will be such a massive opportunity to open
- 3:21Speaker 3: the market for agriculture, for new farmers to get into
- 3:24Speaker 3: the market. There's some lettuce farmers in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
- 3:27Speaker 3: They farm two hundred and fifty thousand head of organic
- 3:30Speaker 3: lettuce every year on three acres with six employees, and
- 3:34Speaker 3: all of those heads of lettuce go into the school
- 3:36Speaker 3: system in Albuquerque, New Mexico. That is the way, right,
- 3:40Speaker 3: I mean, that's how we get healthy.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Food to all of our kids.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you for explaining all that and giving such
- 3:46Speaker 1: a great example. And that new wave of people wanting
- 3:49Speaker 1: to get into farming. It used to be such a
- 3:52Speaker 1: great legacy point for families, but they need help, you know,
- 3:55Speaker 1: at a time to get them from we say farm
- 3:58Speaker 1: to table, I'm talking farm to urban and having those
- 4:01Speaker 1: snap and EVTs. That's a great idea to have them encompass.
- 4:05Speaker 2: All of that.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Look, before I let you go, children have been a
- 4:08Speaker 1: huge focus just in general of the Maha movement, and you've.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Got the presidential fitness test back. Just some quick thoughts
- 4:14Speaker 2: on that.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Well, this President again has been very focused and it's
- 4:18Speaker 3: been really cool the presidential fitness test. You think about
- 4:21Speaker 3: President JFK, my friend, Secretary Kennedy's uncle, his dad was
- 4:25Speaker 3: Attorney general. I mean, that was the last time in
- 4:28Speaker 3: our country we really focused on health in terms of
- 4:31Speaker 3: what we eat, physical fitness, getting enough daylight, sunlight every
- 4:35Speaker 3: single day. We are completely changing the game here and
- 4:38Speaker 3: the presidential fitness part is a part of that.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely. Well, look, i've seen you on Capitol Hill.
- 4:45Speaker 1: We both caught up with that faith organization she leads,
- 4:48Speaker 1: and you are really on the go. So thank you
- 4:51Speaker 1: very much for your focus on farmers and I appreciate
- 4:54Speaker 1: your time today talking about our nation's food.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Maha. Thank you much.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Is Monday, Maha.
- 5:00Speaker 3: That's right, going over the Great American State Fair to
- 5:02Speaker 3: talk more about it.
