- 0:00All right, Well this is fate because I've been trying to get to my
- 0:04next mess on for a while. Brandon Dowman, the man of the Strangers
- 0:08project, is here with me right now in his own studio at the Oculus.
- 0:13I mean this is an upgrade from Washington Square Park, is it not?
- 0:15Yeah, definitely. I love every space I get to share these,
- 0:18but this one's been really special. So tell me about this project. I
- 0:21just heard it you started in two thousand and nine. Yeah. I started
- 0:23this in two thousand and nine. Is what I thought was going to be
- 0:25a small, little experiment. I set up a sign inviting people to sitting
- 0:29right about their life. Since then, I've collected more than eighty five thousand
- 0:33stories across the country, and I share them with beautiful communities online and then
- 0:38in physical installations like this. And obviously Washington Square Park made an impact on
- 0:42this project, isn't it. Yeah. So I do this in all kinds
- 0:45of different spaces, schools, museums, festivals, but a lot of what
- 0:49I do is just out in public space. And yeah, over the years,
- 0:52Washington Square Park here in New York has been a really special place for
- 0:55the project. You know, since O nine current events has not always been
- 0:58fun. Have you found that to be an increase in these stories based on
- 1:02the news as well? Yes and no. But for the most part,
- 1:04these stories are really introspective, so they're tapping more into just like just journal
- 1:10entries about what you know, people's lives and where they're fitting in their lives
- 1:14in that moment. Stuff certainly does come up, but whenever I'm showing them
- 1:18some of these, they are always from any point in history of the projects.
- 1:21Even the stuff on the walls here, it could be from over ten
- 1:23years ago, it could be from yesterday. Now. Obviously I have a
- 1:25lot of followers, but for those who are not following, where can they
- 1:26follow you? Right now? Just strangersproject dot com you can find everything.
- 1:30But I'm most active on Instagram, Strangers prooj also getting started on TikTok,
- 1:37but just the website has everything as well. What's it mean to slow people
- 1:41down with this? I mean, this is a bustling city, but here
- 1:42we are standing in front of all these different stories, kind of slowing us
- 1:46all down a little bit. Yeah, they're always wereen in person. That's
- 1:49been a really important part for me. You know, you can read them
- 1:51online, but they're only shared pen and paper in person, nothing mail day
- 1:55and nothing sent in online. I really wanted people to have the opportunity to,
- 1:57as you said, slowed down and work with the actual sheet of paper,
- 2:01that physical touch of being right there in the moment. All right,
- 2:06let me ask you this. Have people become not strangers through this project?
- 2:08We have people actually connected through this absolutely both. I've continued to meet a
- 2:14lot of these people, you know, regulars as they come back. And
- 2:15then other people many times have said they've you know, ended up talking to
- 2:19somebody else writing a story, especially like in Washingins Square Park where somebody would
- 2:23see someone else with a clipboard and they'd be like, oh, are you
- 2:24doing the story thing too? And yeah, people are definitely connected. Is
- 2:28diversity as much as New York City? Do you see that university? Through
- 2:30all these notes? Everybody, it's all ages, all walks of life.
- 2:35Yeah, everybody. Now, have you written your own story as well?
- 2:38I've done a few anonymously mixed in among probably about three times over the past
- 2:42fifteen years. Wow. Oh, it's an imprompt of interview, so it's
- 2:45all off the couple of Yeah, so you're able to roll with it.
- 2:47Yeah, for sure, this is the oculus. Obviously people can find you
- 2:52here, but I feel like your impact is felt worldwide. Do you feel
- 2:54that, Oh yeah, definitely. There's as much as I love being able
- 2:58to do this in person, there was also a really beautiful global community of
- 3:00people that read these all over the world, and it's really exciting when those
- 3:04people get to finally see the space in person. You know, every day
- 3:07here, especially somewhere like Yaculous, it's New York, people are visiting I
- 3:10people come in all the time or saying I've been following this for one,
- 3:15five, ten years, and they're so excited. Another question to see are
- 3:17you a New Yorker by blood, by birth? Not originally? I am
- 3:20from Michigan originally, which is where I started this, but I moved to
- 3:23New York in twenty twelve. And what inspired you to put this out there
- 3:27into the New York City world. I you know, I'd been doing it
- 3:30for a few years before that. Before I was doing this full time,
- 3:34I worked with a nonprofit called Active Minds, doing mental health work with college
- 3:37students all around the country, and I actually ran one of their national touring
- 3:40programs, and I got to do this in my free time as I was
- 3:44traveling around the country and one of our events was here in New York City,
- 3:47and I fell in love with it. So i just changed my plane
- 3:51ticket to go to New York instead of back to Michigan. And so I've
- 3:53been here percent any strong emotions after people write these letters, I mean,
- 3:57have you seen crying? Have you seen laughing? Scene? It's a big
- 4:00sight relieve everything you can imagine, So every every type of emotion, you
- 4:04know, people are sharing some really intimate moments of their life. Sometimes we
- 4:08actually have tissue boxes all around the space because there are a lot of tears
- 4:12shed, but in a good way. A lot of people say it's a
- 4:14it's a really good cry for them. Well, you're leaving your marker in
- 4:16the city and I'm so glad to have this time with you today. Yeah,
- 4:19I'm so glad to chat with you. This was Brandon from the Strangers
- 4:21Project and we'll follow up again. Yeah, sounds great.
