- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update. I'm Zach Power.
- 0:06Speaker 1: The RCMP is investigating an alleged assault at a school
- 0:09Speaker 1: in Bay Roberts. A video circulating on social media appears
- 0:13Speaker 1: to show some young people assaulting another person. Young people
- 0:16Speaker 1: shown in the video have not been identified to the
- 0:18Speaker 1: RCMP and no reports of a similar assault have yet
- 0:22Speaker 1: been made to police. The video was officially reported to
- 0:26Speaker 1: the RCMP by a concerned third party, anyone with information.
- 0:30Speaker 1: asked to contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers. A 75-year-old
- 0:34Speaker 1: man is dead following a single-vehicle crash on the Beer
- 0:37Speaker 1: and Peninsula Highway on Sunday. The RCMP were called to
- 0:41Speaker 1: the crash scene just before noon, and it happened just
- 0:43Speaker 1: south of Terrenceville. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Another occupant was sent to hospital with injuries that are
- 0:50Speaker 1: not believed to be life-threatening. An investigation into the crash
- 0:53Speaker 1: is still ongoing. Ontario's police watchdog says the man suspected
- 0:58Speaker 1: of opening fire at police officers outside his synagogue has died. Belleville,
- 1:03Speaker 1: Ontario police have identified the man as 29-year-old Sean Ward
- 1:06Speaker 1: of Quinty West. A special investigations unit says that the
- 1:10Speaker 1: shootout left the officer seriously injured. The shooting happened at
- 1:14Speaker 1: the start of Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the
- 1:17Speaker 1: Jewish calendar. In other news, U.S. President Donald Trump addressed
- 1:24Speaker 1: the United Nations in New York today on a wide-ranging
- 1:26Speaker 1: speech that went from everything from immigration, climate change, and
- 1:30Speaker 1: international criminal courts. Trump offered a chilling warning to Iran
- 1:35Speaker 1: while claiming that the war in that country will be
- 1:37Speaker 1: resolved soon.
- 1:39Speaker 2: But I have a big decision to make. Will a
- 1:43Speaker 2: deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and
- 1:48Speaker 2: create a far greater country than it ever was before?
- 1:53Speaker 2: Maybe one of the greatest in the Middle East or
- 1:55Speaker 2: even the world. Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic?
- 2:02Speaker 1: You'd have to go back decades to find another year
- 2:04Speaker 1: like the current hurricane season. To date, no hurricanes have
- 2:07Speaker 1: formed in the Atlantic Basin, a phenomenon not seen in
- 2:10Speaker 1: 112 years. That's thanks to a strong El Nino effect.
- 2:15Speaker 1: which is effectively suppressing the formation of major storms in
- 2:18Speaker 1: the Atlantic. There have been six named storms so far
- 2:20Speaker 1: this season, none of which have achieved hurricane status. That
- 2:24Speaker 1: compares to seven this time last year, and two developed
- 2:28Speaker 1: into hurricanes. Environment Canada meteorologist David Neal.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Obviously, 112 years ago, that was before the era of
- 2:37Speaker 3: satellite observations. So that era started in the 1960s, so.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Anything kind of before that period, before we had satellite data,
- 2:46Speaker 3: you kind of had to take with a little bit
- 2:48Speaker 3: of a grain of salt to an extent, just because
- 2:51Speaker 3: there could have been some that wouldn't have detected just
- 2:54Speaker 3: with the lack of ability to use the satellite data.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And that's your news. I'm Zach Power.
